Title: WHAT'S WHAT
Post by: bk on February 26, 2009, 12:24:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes said what's what, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to figure out what's what.

We heard about our new benefits package yesterday.  There was wailing and gnashing of teeth.  We're going from a strict co-pay based system to one where we have to upfront the complete cost of the office visit or prescription and then submit to get reimbursed.

But, as I keep telling myself, we're lucky to still have jobs!  And insurance at all!      :)

Finally I'm going to bed - it was so frustrating - somehow when I was doing the track titles I got off - had to completely reconfigure about four tracks in the first third of the CD - got those done and then I was somehow one number off and I could NOT figure it out - it turns out I'd put two tracks together on the edit list but NOT on the track title list - once I fixed that everything seemed to line up and match properly.  So, I've sent it off to the mastering guy and hopefully it will all make sense to him.  I'm sooo overtired and cranky right now.

Tonight is parent/teacher conference night at the Vixter's high school.   You only get 5 minutes with each teacher (prescheduled time slots) and have to race around the school from classroom  to classroom.  So by time you get there you really have 3 minutes to talk

(this is the new a system put in place by the new principal)

Last year the way they did it was to have all the science teachers in one place all the history teachers in one place, etc etc and you would go and find your kid's teachers and you could talk as long as you liked as long as there was no one else waiting for that teacher

It was much more convenient and conducive to a real talk.  So of course the new guy had to change it just because he could.

oh well

Today I sent Vixdad to work with a lunch of roasted turkey breast, lettuce, tomato and mayo on whole wheat , seedless red grapes and homemade potato salad.  Yesterday afternoon I made the potato salad. (My first attempt to do so )

I am not a big fan of potato salad myself so I never made it before. Vixdad likes it quite a bit. I usually buy it for him at the deli counter but they were asking $3.00 a lb which seemed ridiculously high to me.  I already had the potatoes and onion in the house  so I figured what the heck let me give it a whirl.

I hope it tastes all right

The Vixter's lunch is deli ham sliced thin and rolled up, dill pickles and Ritz crackers.  She doesn't like sandwiches.  She also got a brownie for dessert.

The potato salad sounds great to me.

For lunch I will have leftover turkey chili and a salad with grape tomatoes, baby carrots and a splash of Eyetalian dressing. I will have a Bosc Pear or an apple (both purchased at the Union Square Greenmarket from Migliorelli Farms (http://migliorelli.com/)) after I eat my main course and salad. I will also drink a glass of

Celestial Seasonings Mandarin Orange Spice® Iced Tea (http://www.celestialseasonings.com/products/category.html/herbal-teas)

Now I'm hungry!

P.S. I changed the tea color from Orange to Maroon because Orange is too hard to read.

DR vixmom - thanks for asking.  I should have my car back in about 3 weeks.  The other guy's insurance is covering everything.  And my insurance is covering my rental in the meantime.  And I do not appear to be injured.  So all is well - very well.  :)

But of course, tonight is when the Publisher's Clearing House van will be pulling up to my front door with balloons and a huge check, so maybe I'll just buy a new car.     ;D

Good morning, all! I have very little to report. Another package of work arrived yesterday so I'm going to be busy for a while. I had a very weird dream about calling 911 while my Dad worked on a house where most of the roof had either blown or burned away; it's too vague now. I've never dreamed about my Mother, that I can recall, in the past fifteen years since a dream about a month after she died.

Today, BABES edits and libretto, Frank Loesser, Jerome Moross, and a Ron Raines concert are all possible options. So I guess I need to tidy up and get to work.

It's funny DR MattH i just read your comments about this week's show. And
i actually liked this episode worse than most of the others.  I will agree that
 the backstory parts with HRG were well done. But i don't like when the show
 does not focus on more characters. There was only one story. And no hiro. No
claire.  I love Peter. But i thought they should have shown some of the other
characters. kklkl;kl;kl;k dfkjldfskljdfskljkljkljkljkjlkljkljkljkljkljkjllk jkljkjlkjlkjlklkljkljkljkjlkljkj

Oh and DR mattH, re: the discussion from last night about renewing shows. I was not talking about the actors at all. I never mentioned any actors on the CW holding out hope. I was talking about the producers of the show and the woman who runs the network saying there was a chance privileged would be renewed.  But truthfully i have no idea if that was bs.

RE: last night's AMERICAN IDOL. It will be interesting to see who gets through.

From watching i would say Adam Lambert will get in for the guys. And i would think allison (red head) or megan (jazz girl) will get in for the girls. The extra i would say maybe norman (crazy guy) just because he was entertaining.

HEROES has far too many characters to get to each one each week, especially when necessary pieces of the puzzle not involving them need to be filled in. DOn't fret about what's NOT there. Enjoy (or not) what IS there.

(LOST didn't get to everybody either. It's the nature of the beast with ensemble shows with huge casts like these shows.)

What are your symptoms?  I was sick the first six weeks of this year with a bug that nested in my bronchial tubes.  Very ugly and "tuna gloppy".

I woke up at 4 am with chills--simply could NOT get warm--plus my heart was racing a bit, which I always find scary. Later that days the chills abated, but I was feverish. I've had all that before, of course--there was just something vague that made it all really awful. Today I have a nasty headache and am weak and feverish off and on--a HUGE improvement, believe me!

Ron, I've had a bronchial thing that comes and goes for longer than I'd like to admit. There's an over-the-counter enzyme supplement that I get through my doctor which helps, but you can't buy it in the stores. Let me if you want more information.

The soonest I get my new glasses is 1-2 weeks. I have the anti-glare coating added, which takes an extra day. But no complaints here. Like Jose, I have a "difficult" prescription. Unlike Jose, I do have astigmatism. I am thrilled when they get it right.

The soonest I get my new glasses is 1-2 weeks. I have the anti-glare coating added, which takes an extra day. But no complaints here. Like Jose, I have a "difficult" prescription. Unlike Jose, I do have astigmatism. I am thrilled when they get it right.

All of the above, for me, plus rolled and polished edges.  Every time the phone rings, I hope it's the optometrist's office.  We have an overcast day here in SW Ohio, which seems extra gloomy to me.

I know you'll find this unbelievable, but, yes, it is snowing in Portland.

Good news:  no leaky, leaky (not even Louis) after moss removal despite heavy rains last night.

Bad news:  I discovered that the chimney workers had managed to completely rip the *metal* (!) faceplate off of my outside plugs when they were yanking their cord (not a euphemism) yesterday.  The owner said he'd pay for a new one.

Bad news for the hygienist department:  I am going to the dentist for the first time in probably 10 years today.  I know, I know.  But I have never had a cavity and always get the same report every time, whether it's 6 months or 10 years:  "Floss more, brush better, no cavities, perfect dental health.  Goodbye."  :)

Good golly!  Were those glasses outsourced to China?  I've never waited more than three days, I don't believe.

I'm guessing that DR DAW's optometrist/eyeglass store sends them off to a lab that handles a bunch of stores and offices, thus the "delay".  When I got my last pairs, I was told that it would take at least five days since they had to order a set of frames, as well as the base lenses.  Well, it turned out that they had a regular shipment that came in the following morning, and since their in-store lab had a light workload at the time, they were able to have them ready by that afternoon.  -A 24-hour turnaround! :)

But I do remember having to wait anywhere from a week to ten days for glasses in the past since the lab was in Tennessee - and the store was in Virginia.

Jose, re:  Kurzweils.  I actually have my very own which is in our downstairs studio/rec room.  It's ancient, but it still works wonderfully.

The grand that the church bought me is the latest model (can't recall which "Mark" it is, but it was new last year).  The "pop" was definitely electrical sounding and it scared the holy you know what out of me.

Well, I will speak up for Tomovoz and myself and add Lani Hall (at least her B66 years) to the list.  Those B66 ballads put her on a par with Streisand and Garland, easily.  Listen to "So Many Stars" and just marvel at how easily she handles huge leaps, and her control and elegant use of minimal vibrato was amazing.

If any of you Los Angeles folk are going to be in West Hollywood tomorrow (27) night at 7:30, please stop in at the A Different Light Bookstore (8853 Santa Monica Blvd.) and say "Hello".  I'm going to be doing my final Los Angeles signing there.

On Sunday (1), we're off to Austin again for 4-5 days, then on/around March 15th, we're driving our animals back to Austin and I'm out of Los Angeles for good.

I figure that 45+ years in one city is enough.

I don't think that LOST or HEROES need to show EVERY character every week. It's funny but this week LOST focused on one story and i found it brilliant. But HEROES much less so. I didn't need every character this week. But the one story was not enough for ME (my opinion).

cool that some of the other people on the plane survived. How cool that locke
came back from the dead. How completely crazy that ben was the one who

I don't want to go back and change my post cause it might be confusing for those who have already read it. But I got confused between 2 people. The Matt (who i was afraid might have gotten in to top 12 and who got tons of publicity is Matt  Breitzke). He is the bearded bald guy. The matt who actually might have the 3rd most votes is actually the other Matt, Matt Giraud. He got no publicity. So that would be pretty amazing if he got through.

Are you saying YOU have to submit the bills to your insurance company?  Usually the doctor's office does & then bills you for the difference.

MBArnum, did you see this in Sunday's  PARADE (http://www.parade.com/news/2009/02/where-can-iraqis-go.html)

(http://www.parade.com/export/sites/default/images/-v2/hot-topics/2009/0222/iraq-refugees.jpg)
Iraqis who've left home don't know when—or if—they'll return.

Quote
Where Can Iraqis Go?

IN THE PAST FEW YEARS, insurgent militias in Iraq have targeted specific citizens because of their religion or ethnicity—or because of their association with Americans. One such threatened Iraqi was Rafi, 27, a Baghdad engineer who had assisted the U.S. military with setting up phone networks.

"As a Christian who helped the U.S., I was dead," he says. "They told my father, 'Give us your son, or we're going to burn all of you.'" In early 2007, after one of his neighbors was kidnapped and killed and he was threatened with the same fate, Rafi and his family left for Syria in the middle of the night.

They joined more than 4 million other Iraqis—about one in six of the country's pre-war population—who have fled, creating the biggest refugee crisis of the past decade. More than half of the refugees moved to safer areas within Iraq;  a small number of those people live in makeshift camps. Two million Iraqis have left the country entirely. About 1.2 million are in Syria, half a million are in Jordan, and tens of thousands have ended up in Iran, Lebanon, Egypt, and Turkey, according to the most recent numbers from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
...
Some families fear that Iraq may never be safe enough, so the UNHCR is recommending that they resettle in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States. In 2008, the U.S. admitted some 13,000 Iraqis through its official refugee program. This year, the U.S. has pledged to accept 17,000. But advocates say that number is far too small—by comparison, in an eight-month period in 1975, the U.S. took in 131,000 Vietnamese. "We're only scratching the surface of all of the Iraqis still living there in danger because of their American associations," says the IRC's Carey.

It does seem that we are not doing our part.

I had not seen that Der Brucer, thanks for posting it. There are a lot of Iraqi's who have left and are living in tent camps waiting for a place to allow them to settle. Most of those who have or need to leave are the educated, which is leaving Iraq in quite a mess as a country trying to regroup.

Which is a major concern - experience should have taught us that refugee camps rapidly become incubators for extremists. If these refugees recognize there is little hope of their returning and that their future lies in assimilating into a new society, the path to resettlement would be eased.

More to the point is the Pottery Barn Rule: We broke it - we own it!
Any Iraqi who emigrated because his safety was in jeopardy because of his support of the US Military should have an instant claim of US Asylum.

Picking-up 100,000 refugees willing and ready to become self-sufficient should be a relatively uncomplicated task - it just takes the will.

And then I watched "The Silver Chalice" -- really one of the most unusual films, with some actors just fine and others hamming it up bigtime (the guy who plays Kester is a must-watch for his preachy, magisterial style of acting and speech-making).   The sets are astonishing and the music is wonderful.

While I was waiting for my lunch ride to pick me up, I watched the rest of last night's IDOL competition. I don't know their names so I'll have to use other means of describing them.

The last guy (with the "Cher" look) had an amazing vocal range. I found his Mick Jagger tune too frenzied, but since it IS the semifinals and you're trying to get noticed and make a name for yourself, I completely understood the over-vocalizing. He was unquestionably THE most talented singer of the night.

The 16-year old rock girl (orange/red hair) had no vocal control, and I can see her blowing out her voice within a few weeks of constant singing on the show, but she was far and away the most talented of the girls.

The guy who did "And I Am Telling You" in his "drag" persona actually has a better voice than the judges gave him credit for having, but he really should try to sing one without the "act." I'd be curious to see if he can sustain a song without the shtick.

The guy who did "And I Am Telling You" in his "drag" persona actually has a better voice than the judges gave him credit for having, but he really should try to sing one without the "act." I'd be curious to see if he can sustain a song without the shtick.

A. That was Adam Lambert - a Wicked cast member. His Jagger song last night was an attempt to break his "too-Broadway" label - and it did work!

B. Campy Norman Gentle has a normal persona, Nick Mitchell. who sang a few straight-up numbers in earlier rounds, and was quite good, vocally.

I will be singing a service on March 29th.  It is scheduled to be a memorial service for dad.  I'll be singing two of his favorites, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and "Because He Lives."

If anyone has the latter in the key of F major, let me know. . .

Tony, check your email in a few minutes.  :)  (It's kind of a funky arrangement, courtesy of our friends at CCLI, with key changes through the verses, so I'm only sending the verse in F, which your accompanist can just keep playing over and over and over and over).

DR MattH, re: your idol comments.

I think DR Der BRucer named 2 of your 3.

The last guy is Adam Lambert. I really like him. And since they showed him a ton in the hollywood rounds i think he has a good following and will go far.

The red head 16 year old is allison.

The crazy guy is Nick Mitchell (norman). They have shown him a lot. It's weird but every other time they've said he had a very good voice and the comedy. But this time they did not like his singing as much.

Packaged up a few of the big orders and those are ready to go.  And now I shall be on my way to the Falcon Theater - boy do I wish I hadn't said I'd go - I really just want to relax.  I also wish I hadn't agreed to a small work session with Kevin Spirtas tomorrow, but I'm absolutely holding it to one hour.  I have a few errands to do, but that's it.

I wonder if there is a local TV station in Danise's town who would like check into this creep who bilked Danise?

In Seattle on King 5 News, Jesse Jones (http://www.king5.com/about/bios/stories/K5bios-Jones.500284d8.html) helps consumers with problems like Danise's.  GET JESSE (http://www.king5.com/localnews/getjesse/index.html) is his page on the King 5 News website.  Hopefully, Danise can find someone like Jesse to help!

Michael S.

As much as I like them, I am not sure if Sammy Davis Jr. or Bobby Darrin, being dead and all, could be considered favorite current day singers.

True True

But I listen to them more than some of the living. They were great entertainers

Cool!  Thanks!  I would also think that Danise would have a better chance to get something done with someone on TV than with someone in a newspaper.  More exposure on TV than in print.

Had a completely varied evening of viewing entertainment.

I began by watching five more SOUTH PARK episodes. Two of them I had seen in the CULT OF CARTMAN set, but they were both hilarious so I enjoyed seeing them again. I also listened to all of the audio commentaries for these five shows. (The two creators only speak about five minutes in each one.)

Next, I watched a couple of bonus features on the discs. The second one is an 82-minute documnetary tracing a week in the life of the show (6 days) in which time the entire thing is put together, animated, voiced, scored, and aired. Amazing what they can get time in such a short amount of time.

Next I skimmed through the IDOLS results show. One of the guys and the gal were certainly whom I predicted and felt were the night's best singers. As for the other guy, well, he's one of their boy band contestants this season. They manage to find one or two of them for the finals every year. He wasn't awful, but certainly unspectacular.

Last night's LIFE came next. Good episode, but I was FURIOUS with Ted being manipulated by that woman showing up in his class. I guess some men are that stupid and weak. Her actions would have (1) been a total turn off to me and (2) sent up so many red flags that I would not have given her the time of day.

I did love Charlie getting the surprise drop on the hitwoman and then the final twist on the roof was also very satisfying.

I finally received an email from DR Danise.  The house situation is not good and the contractor did not turn out to be a good guy, just another charmer with loads of promises.  Sheena is still at the kennel & Danise at her friend's house.

She didn't ask, however if anyone has any suggestions for her please send them to me & I'll forward them to her.

Oh, no! This is terrible.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes for DR Danise! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I know what she is going through. The same thing happened to my mother's condo. The contractor started but never finished it. She finally fired him. Kept his tools in lieu of getting money back. And then started over.
We thought of suing, small claims court. But it would cost more money and time. So we cut our loses and moved on
Unfortunatly there are people out there in workforce. But word of mouth will cut their business short. I don't think the contractor who we fired is working this area any more. He was a real flake on top of it all.
Yes, a four day week until the end of June, then we will see what the budget looks like. We may have lay offs at that point. We will still be open 5 days, but each and every employee must take one day off each week, unpaid.
But even "commonplace" events make the news.  All of those "On Your Side" programs are there to help "unsuspecting" and "suspecting" men and women with some "commonplace" consumer problems.  DR Danise should at least know that she might have the option to consult with them.
Thankfully, DR Danise is not able to read your post right now - that's most definitely the last thing she would want to hear right now.
I remember seeing a special about how they made the show and how topical it can be because they're able to make and broadcast episodes so quickly.  I'd also heard (on some other show) that it could take as much as nine months to make each episode of "The Simpsons" because it's all hand-drawn and they have to score it, etc.
