Post by: bk on March 01, 2009, 12:14:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've contemplated both the notes and the navel and also the naval, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently contemplating their cud.

Thanks!   Pam just left for the airport and even though it's only 5:00 AM I'm awake so i don't think I'll try to go back to sleep.  My alarm is set in an hour anyway.   It's been a nice trip, but I'm very ready to go home.

Lovely photos yesterday from DR LAURA and DR derBRUCER.

MR BK's notes remind me of the post on IMDB wherein a reader decried the fact that the DVD version of the original THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL was not released in widescreen, and he hoped that that would be corrected in future releases.

I don't know about a Super Drive, DR JOSE - but the description on Ebay when I bought it read:

CD/DVD R/W drive - which I assume meant read/write.

DR JMK - I received my photo today and will scan later for you later this week.  There is a crease in Frances' face that makes her look very strange, but otherwise she looks great and I am sorry we can't see that performance.

Tonight we have a new TAR. Followed by the premiere of CELEBRITY APPRENTICE.

ABC has a 2 hour BROTHERS & SISTERS (which for some reason was on here also last night but i was not in the mood to most likely be upset). I will try to watch that today. Although i really wanted to try to get my niece to watch ENCHANTED with me. But she only wants to watch Dora!

I have a question for people with widescreen TVs.

When you watch a movie in Academy Format do you watch the movie with black/gray bars on the left and right side of the image or so you watch it "formatted to fit widescreen TVs"?

Good morning, all! I am caught up and informed. I had a note from our DR edisaurus, and I think she could use a lot of vibes right now since there's too much tsuris: angst on the Mercer documentary and too many tragedies in friends' lives. She asked about all of you DRs so send her some vibes!

Today, a concerted effort to finish Act One of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA and turn it in; the Moross scores keep arriving in the post and I have to get to them, as well as the concert work for Ron Raines in Houston in April, are sitting there and waiting for my attention.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes for our DR edisaurus! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most Academy Ratio films I have on DVD fill the screen to begin with, unless I am doing something wrong - which is entirely possible.
You're definitely doing something wrong if Academy ratios fill the widescreen TV viewing area. They should be in the center with bars on the right and left. You must have the picture mode on your TV set to one of the stretch or fill modes.
I always watch Academy ratio pictures with the bars on the left and right whether it be for review purposes or just for my own pleasure (if you stretch them, you're going to be cutting off parts of the image and thus missing them). The only time I stretch an image to fill the screen is when I have a nonanamorphic widescreen picture like the Hammer HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES or WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, and the picture is windowboxed (black bars above, below, right, and left). Then I expand the picture to let the picture make use of the widescreen area.
Today I start work on the four-film Criterion/Eclipse box TRAVELS WITH HIROSHI SHIMIZU. I have never seen any of these four films.
The first film (which I'll watch this afternoon) was made in 1933, but it's a silent movie: JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR.
And I'm looking forward to seeing my first-ever episode of DAMAGES in high definition. I glanced at a couple of minutes of last week's episode the other night after I stumbled onto the HD Showcase channel, and I was blown away by the improvement in the quality from the regular FX broadcast. I don't know about a Super Drive, DR JOSE - but the description on Ebay when I bought it read:
CD/DVD R/W drive - which I assume meant read/write.
DR JRand - The SuperDrive is CD/DVD R/W.  However, most of the older iMacs came with CD-ROM drives that were CD-R/W, DVD-R. -Which is what my previous iBook had... Which sort of confused me since I also had iDVD, so I thought I could write DVDs too.  Nope.  However, what it allowed me to do was to transfer DVD content to my hard-drive, and then convert it and burn it into another file type so that it could be burned as a video file onto a blank CDR.  Or something like that.  So...
-Click on the Apple icon in the top left hand corner of your screen.
-Click on "About This Mac"
-Click on "More Info..." -That should bring up "System Profiler"
-Under the Hardware listing, click on "Disc Burning" -There you will see a listing of the CD and DVD reading and writing capabilities. If you don't see "Disc Burning", click on "ATA". Under the "Model" info it should tell you what kind of disc drive you have.
Singdaw,
For some people the cheap, ready-made readers work fine--it depends largely on your Rx, plus how much you read. Many people have custom reading glasses made because progressives just don't meet all our needs. With a progressive lens you must look through the lowest part your lens to read, which means that your reading material must be virtually in your lap--at least for me.  When I'm on the computer or reading in bed I look through the middle part of my lens, which is intended not for reading, but more "room distance" according to how the progressive is made.  When I had a bifocal it drove me nuts to have to keep jumping over the line. So a progressive plus reading glasses works for me. When I need a new Rx I often get the readers first; if I can't read well with an old progressive it doesn't really bother me. I only buy a new progressive when I need a new distance Rx.
I'm like Matt H. - the only time I'll  use my zoom function on the tv is when the film is not anamorphically encoded.
Disney's HERCULES is another one which has not yet been released in a proper transfer, come to think of it, neither has Disney's BLACK CAULDRON.
I just watched a Bollywood film, from 2006, which was not anamorphically encoded(!) and in the 'scope format, but I couldn't zoom in on it because the subtitles were placed in the bottom black bar. . .JODHAA AKBAR was the movie, and it was lovely to look at, but, with a scope aspect in the center of the screen it was just maddening.
Pam's flight to Omaha via Atlanta was cancelled.  She left for the airport at 4:30 AM and was still there when I left.  They told her she'd have to go tomorrow and she didn't push the issue for awhile. After she finally tried to get another flight, the told her she could have been on a flight through Salt Lake, but it was too late now.  Anyway, she's on standby for a flight through Atlanta that should just be leaving New Orleans. Hope she made it on.  She won't get to Omaha until 9:00 PM.
On the other hand, I left the hotel at 6:45 PM and assuming this last flight is on time, which so far so good, I'll get to Omaha about 1:45 PM.  Vibes she made it on the plane, but in all honesty, I'm glad it wasn't me
The worst part for Pam is they blamed it on the weather, so if she can't get out of New Orleans until tomorrow (there aren't that many flights out of New Orleans and all of them seem to be full) she'll have to pay for her room and everything else.  I think they can give her discounts on hotels, but they didn't do that.  I think I would have tried harder to get out of there on another airline if not on Delta
Jrand, as MattH correctly said, on a widescreen TV Academy ratio films should have black or gray on either side of the image (reverse letterboxing), which should be in the middle of the TV.  Just as film purists always wanted their films letterboxed to the correct ratio (widescreen/scope) in the pre-widescreen TV days, film purists would never watch an Academy film modified to fit their new widescreen TV.  As you know, non film purists always wanted their 4.3 TVs to have a full-screen image, even if it was pan-and-scan.
I wish it weren't so, but I fear that there will soon be no mom-and-pop bookstores left in LA and environs - there are only a few now, less than a handful, I think, and they are all in danger of closing, save for the Iliad in North Hollywood, which is, perhaps, my least favorite bookstore of all time - I loathe the people who run it.
DR elmore3003 - photos of Jayden are welcome any time.     :)
Happy to oblige. I just break out in smiles thinking about him and his sister Riley. She's still too young to have a formed personality as sharp as Jayden's.
Here he is with his beautiful mom yesterday!
I just got back from my walk; it's a very crisp, chilly day, and there's some snow falling very lightly. I wanted to walk in Riverside Park but it's too cold and windy down there but i bet it's quite beautiful.
Good Afternoon!
I'm watching "Le Damnation de Faust" on PBS/WNET/Thirteen/etc., etc., etc.  It's the Robert LePage production that premiered at The Met last Fall. I saw it in person, and, well... I think that once my friend, Patrick Carfizzi, has finished singing, I shall head out for a bit of wintry walk myself.
With bars, always, as the artists intended.
Good Afternoon!
Ah! That was a nice walk. :)
I ended up heading over to Riverbank State Park to take in the great view of the George Washington Bridge, as well as to watch some of the hockey tournament that's going on there this weekend.  I actually had a "WTF?!?" moment when I walked around the ice-skating rink and came across some big piles of snow.  How long has this been hanging around?  Well.. It was the shavings/scrapings from the Zamboni machine.  ;)
It has continued raining all afternoon, not constantly but with only a few breaks. We got almost an inch yesterday and today should be the same or a little more. It's certainly helping to erase the deficit in rainfall we had accumulated since the start of the year.
Next I put in the first movie in the four film box set: JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR. It's the tritest kind of melodrama: two girls in love with the same man, one girl leaves town, the other girl marries him and gets pregnant, then the other girl comes back, and the husband is tempted to stray.
Definitely not a classic though I thoroughly enjoyed the new score for the film by Donald Sosin. It's got several very beautiful themes.
Title: Re: CONTEMPLATING MY NAVEL
Post by: Matt H. on March 01, 2009, 01:17:55 PM
That movie was only 71 minutes, so I immediately put in the second one in the set: MR. THANK YOU, a slight but delightful little road picture. The title character is a bus driver who is so kind and considerate to everyone that he thanks people who are blocking the road as he passes them. It's basically a 20-mile trip while we get to know a little bit about various passengers. As I said, slight but charming. And there are some beautiful panoramas that are filmed as the bus trundles along the mountain road.
This is the longest of the four movies in the set: 76 minutes.
Singdaw,
For some people the cheap, ready-made readers work fine--it depends largely on your Rx, plus how much you read. Many people have custom reading glasses made because progressives just don't meet all our needs. With a progressive lens you must look through the lowest part your lens to read, which means that your reading material must be virtually in your lap--at least for me.  When I'm on the computer or reading in bed I look through the middle part of my lens, which is intended not for reading, but more "room distance" according to how the progressive is made.  When I had a bifocal it drove me nuts to have to keep jumping over the line. So a progressive plus reading glasses works for me. When I need a new Rx I often get the readers first; if I can't read well with an old progressive it doesn't really bother me. I only buy a new progressive when I need a new distance Rx.
What DR Jeanne said, plus some clarifications to put DR DAW at ease:
My new lenses are progressives and are quite satisfactory for everything but long periods of reading.  Since yesterday, I've determined that reading restaurant menus, theater programs, and the church hymnal/prayer book is fine.  I only have difficulties, as does DR Jeanne, at the computer screen, reading the newspaper, and reading while lying down.  Following in my father's footsteps, I have had a separate pair of Rx reading glasses ever since I started wearing bifocals.  Usually I just have the reading Rx put into the frames I'm replacing, but this time those were unusable, so I'm still using my old readers.  I might take advantage of their offer of $100 off a second pair to get new reading glasses.
I have a question for people with widescreen TVs.
When you watch a movie in Academy Format do you watch the movie with black/gray bars on the left and right side of the image or so you watch it "formatted to fit widescreen TVs"?
I prefer the "original aspect ratio," whatever that may be.  If it's Academy or full frame, I have the black or gray bars on the side.  If it's a non-anamorphic widescreen, I zoom in so that it fills my widescreen TV.  But if something is only available in pan-n-scan (like "The Visit" with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn, which was on not too long ago) and it's something that I want to watch, I'll put up with it.
I have attempted to fix the above post multiple times.  I can't seem to post out of the quote box-very odd.???
The last [ /quote ] (without spaces within the brackets) must be before your actual post.
I went way below the last quotation bracket.
Hmm...something else must've been deleted above.  The number of "[quote author =..." and "[ /quote ]" codes have to match.
Regardless, your message is totally readable. :D
It is snowing, and icy, here in Rehoboth.
The store was tres busy today - typical "Soon it's gonna rain" shopping, with everyone buying a lot more than they usually would on a Sunday.  I was scheduled to monitor the self-scan registers, but spent at least a third of my time working a regular register.  Lots of very full carts.
Even when I was on self-scan, we were hopping.  The bill-dispensing mechanism on Register Four was acting up, and there was no time to reboot the contraption, so I was having to dash back and forth, getting customers change from my monitoring station.  That wouldn't have been such a hassle, but there were quite a few customers who wanted extra cash back, something to make their pockets happier.  People, it's gonna snow!  You're not gonna be out and about this evening!  Whaddaya need pocket money for???
And that's what it was like at work.
Beyond that, der Brucer just fell down and went boom while taking out the trash.
Nothing serious - he was pushing the trash can up the driveway, said trash can skidded, so did he, and he landed on one knee.  He was more startled than anything else.
We already parked the car on the upper lawn, to make it easier to drive off if we have to, but he's worried about how icy the road is going to be, and if I get called in to work tomorrow (I'm not scheduled - like that makes a difference) he wants me to think seriously about walking in.
If that's the case, I'm going to insist that he walk with me, just to get the photos!   :D
Just an observation. I went to Circuit City to see what DVD Blu Ray they have left. They are at 70% off. The picking were slim and even at 70% I didn't see anything I wanted.
BUT
There were two movies at the two locations I visited today that CC must have order with anticipation that they would be huge sellers. They must have had a couple of 100 of each title. They were Hancock and I am A Legend. Both film starred Will Smith. I wonder if there was a connection in so much overstock
No.  It just means you sent it to the correct email address and that the next time they open their email it will be there as new mail.  For instance if you sent me an email Friday it would have been received but I wouldn't have known about it until I could get back on the computer today.
"Read" means they actually opened the email.
My how time flies!
Matt has just left the building after a truly educational and fun Songfest.
We worked out the arrangements (and the keys) for the songs for Dad's memorial service since Matt will be available to play at my church that Sunday.
DR JMK, you should know that after playing through "Because He Lives," Matt did heartily agree that the arranger must have been on drugs. . . :)
So we worked those two songs for a while, at least to the point that we know where we're going with them, then went on to the "let's try this" portion of Sunday Night Songfest.
I know we began with "Errol Flynn," various songs from "Hair," "Mira" from CARNIVAL and finally, we tackled "The Nancy LaMott Songbook" skipping only two or three of the songs therein. ("Just In Time For Christmas" and "Listen to My Heart" are two which we've done in cabarets, so we didn't feel the urge to go at them with so many more wonderful arrangements waiting to be sung).
Special shout-out to DR Edisaurus came as we went over Nancy's arrangements (courtesy of Christopher Marlowe) of "Moon River" and "Skylark."
I suppose I should plop a dvd in now, or, I could read some more of Dan Simmons' wonderful new novel DROOD.
What to do? What to do?
I wish it weren't so, but I fear that there will soon be no mom-and-pop bookstores left in LA and environs - there are only a few now, less than a handful, I think, and they are all in danger of closing, save for the Iliad in North Hollywood, which is, perhaps, my least favorite bookstore of all time - I loathe the people who run it.
BK, LA is not the only problem where this is happening.  Several of my independent bookstores in London had disappeared this last trip. A section of Charing Cross Road that was once a block of used bookstores has lost them right and left to Quiznos and Subways and a myriad of designer coffee shops.
I assume our pals, Malcolm and Christine, at Bookfellows in Glendale are still thriving.  I've always gotten along okay with the people at Illiad and have always had pretty good hunting there.   I enjoyed its messy clutterness... as long as they keep it alphabetized...
Is  Bertram Smith's Acres of Books still in Long Beach?  Acres of Book (and the same Bertram Smith) used to be a staple for me in Cincinnati...five floors of books...and was still there long after Bert moved to Long Beach.  Alas, no longer...
I must say I'm finding Room At The Top a bit of a slog, although the acting is very good.  One interesting thing is Donald Wolfit, who is, as always, wonderful.  Mr. Wolfit was the role model for Sir in The Dresser - that film is based on its author's time serving as his valet.
My mother generally liked most everything she watched, but she absolutely detested ROOM AT THE TOP. I don't think I ever remember her condemning any other movie, but she certainly did that one.
I have a question for people with widescreen TVs.
When you watch a movie in Academy Format do you watch the movie with black/gray bars on the left and right side of the image or so you watch it "formatted to fit widescreen TVs"?
I prefer the "original aspect ratio," whatever that may be.  If it's Academy or full frame, I have the black or gray bars on the side.  If it's a non-anamorphic widescreen, I zoom in so that it fills my widescreen TV.  But if something is only available in pan-n-scan (like "The Visit" with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn, which was on not too long ago) and it's something that I want to watch, I'll put up with it.
Unfortunately, there are certain DVDs that were issued only in pan and scan or open matte transfers, and that's all we're likely to get.
I have had a super busy evening of viewing. I began by watching the next Hiroshi Shimizu film: THE MASSEURS AND A WOMAN. Part comedy, part mystery, part romantic triangle, and part drama, this hybrid-like film didn't really work for me though there are some individual moments that were good. This one had the best video quality of the four films in the set. Thankfully, it was the shortest.
I watched half of another motion picture, but will finish that one tomorrow in the late afternoon.  I'm told that tomorrow's two-hour work session will, in fact, be three hours - I cannot imagine what we'll do for three hours, so we shall see.  Maybe an hour of it can be lunch.  I am going to have to arise quite early in order to get the jog in, although after seven days (maybe eight) in a row, I think I'm ready for a one-day break.
I have nothing to say at this time.
Has someone paid for your silence?
Something.  That is all I have to say at this moment.  Should I think of something to say, I will post it. . . post haste.
Easy - folks straggle in 30 minute late; 2 hour work session; folks leave 30 minutes early for other commitments.
Well, two or three hours is better than the twelve hour days of last week.
I finally shaved - hadn't done so since last Wednesday.  I look affable.
Charles Pogue and BK, you need to come to Oregon...we have TONS of used book stores!!!
And in all the years I have lived here I can only think of one used book store that has ever closed...all of the others have been around for years and years.
Sad to say, I buy mostly off the internet now, as I'm just filling holes in my collection these days.  And a great many dealers are going to the internet because it is easier than maintaining the upkeep of a store and shop hours.  Also has I get older, I'm finding the thrill of the hunt is not quite what it was.  And it could be because the independent bookstores are not what they once were and their stock does not make one's heart go pitty-pat when sleuthing the stacks. And a bit of my acquisitiveness has died as well; it's time to read all those books I've been buying over the years.  I'm way behind; buying far faster than I read. Still, next to the backstage smells of a theatre, my favourite smell is a musty old bookstore.  And when I can find those rare stores anymore where there are rooms and floors of hidden delights, it is a wonder to behold.
I look affable.
Or at least less frightening.
Well, I must take a shower watch the last three episodes of "Battlestar Galactica."
Too much Jamie Bamber?
NEVER! ;D Thanks!  I didn't watch any "Battlestar Galactica" episodes.  I went to my sister's to help her for a bit, then went to Home Depot to get an adhesive to hang a hook for my shower caddy.  Now, I'm watching "Brothers and Sisters."
I'm also recording the season premiere of "Celebrity Apprentice," to be watched at a later date. :)
Don't forget - I'm going to let you dear readers have the advance on our next two releases - they'll be first up in tomorrow's posts - but, MUM'S the word on both - I don't really want the news out quite yet.  The official announcement will either be Friday or Monday next.
