An interesting excerpt from The Real A's column of December 22, 1997:

The Real A Discovers eBay

Hello. My name is The Real A and I'm a collect-aholic (Hello, Real A). I love to collect. Movie posters, CDs, laserdiscs, first editions (my true passion), sheet music, things I used to have when I was a child, anything and everything. There is simply no stopping me. I get worse and worse.

So, what I did not need was to discover the on-line auction site called eBay. More addicting than chat rooms (yes, even The Hot Tub room pales in comparison to eBay). At this site, there are daily auctions for books, toys, magazines, posters, art, you name it, there's an auction. They will auction anything at the drop of a hat. In fact, they will auction the hat. So, now every night when I get home, I go visit eBay and bid on totally useless things. Usually there are bargains to be found, and I have won some totally useless things at really good prices! Like a cap pistol from the 50s TV program Tightrope, which starred Michael "Touch" Connors (of Mannix fame). Did I need this cap pistol? Sure, like I need a hernia. But the thrill of winning is always exhilarating. I also won a 1950 Viewmaster (with reels). What I will do with a 1950 Viewmaster (with reels) is another story. I also won a set of Pez machines, which are apparently hard to find (these are five machines with M-G-M cartoon heads). I don't really collect Pez machines (I'm amused by them, but I don't have to have them), but, there they were, I bid on them, and I won. You'd be surprised how many people bid on Pez machines. There is a whole Pez machine subculture, which is way more than I need to know. Can you imagine being a Pez-aholic? I can't, and yet here I am with five hard to find Pez machines. Perhaps I'll auction them. I can't tell you what else I've won yet, as the other things I've bid on have not closed yet. But I can assure you that they are just as stupid and useless as the items that I have won. If you'd like to sample eBay, you may go directly to their website (after finishing this column, of course). Please keep me apprised if you win anything. And never bid on anything I'm bidding on. Their URL is: www.ebay.com.

Obviously by July 26, 2000 I'd long since found my column voice:

Well, dear readers, I am making up for lost time with another brand spanking new handy-dandy column. Have you ever made up for lost time? I, for example, am making up for lost time, using a nice blue eye shadow and some subtle lip-gloss, with just a hint of rouge. Why I feel I should make up for lost time when lost time just shows up without any makeup whatsoever, not even eyeliner, is beyond me. And yet, here I am, making up for lost time. I look quite lovely, though, so there you are. I have returned from yet another trip to New York, New York and I have seen yet more plays and musicals which I will discuss ad nauseum later in the column. But for now, let us light our fireworks and sing patriotic songs like Yes, We Have No Bananas because it is the fourth of July weekend. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it is the weekend of July 4th, even though July 4th appears nowhere in this weekend. This July 4th weekend is just a bit of poetic license, isn't it? My driver's license is also poetic - and to prove it here's a copy of it:

The Real A
Will drive today
Don't get in the way
Or there'll be hell to pay.

Wasn't that a poetic license? What the hell am I talking about? Oh, yes, the 4th of July weekend which has no July 4th. Being the 4th of July weekend, I hope all of you will be celebrating. I hope we will light our sparklers, shoot off our fireworks, roast our weenies, and frolic. Above all, frolic (cilorf, spelled backwards). One can never frolic enough. However, if one grows tired of frolicking one can always cavort, for a change of pace. I have been feeling very stressed lately (so much to do, so little time, especially for frolicking or cavorting). What I like to do if I'm feeling stressed is eat many and varied desserts. Yes, desserts, dear readers, they are the antidote to being stressed. After all, what is "stressed" but "desserts" spelled backwards? Speaking of desserts and the 4th of July weekend, there's one more celebration that I haven't mentioned yet. What is that celebration you might ask and I might tell you because frankly I don't want you being stressed so that you have to eat many and varied desserts and then put on weight which will just make you more stressed and whoa Nellie if this hasn't turned into one of those ungainly run-on sentences where the words just tumble one after another willy-nilly and also nilly-willy with no end in sight and if I can't find a way to stop this whole column could turn into one long run-on sentence and then where would we be that's what I'd like to know and actually I do know because I am an expert on run-on sentences and there is only one way to stop them and that's by putting on the run-on sentence brakes which I fully intend to do right about now. Whew. Do you know what, dear readers? My brilliant handy-dandy computer just told me I wrote a run-on sentence. What the hell was I talking about? Oh, yes, the 4th of July weekend and the other event that was cause for celebration. And that event, dear readers, was the actual birthday of the actual Mr. Mark Bakalor. Yes, Mr. Mark Bakalor is no longer the sprig of a twig of a youth that he was. He is now an adult. Being an adult, he is also now living in his very own home, sans parents. He can now do impulsive things like throwing strawberries at the wall without fear of parental reprisal. Or is it reprisal parental? No matter, fling those strawberries against the wall he can and there is no one to say "boo" to him about it, unless someone just happens to show up at his door saying "boo" which would be a hell of a coincidence, flinging strawberry-wise. You know, there is a word we haven't used in quite awhile, but I feel we should use it now because it so encapsulates and captures the entire paragraph that I've just written. And that word is drivel, dear readers. Drivel, pure and simple. Every word, every sentence, drivel personified. In any case, perhaps the next paragraph will be better - perhaps the next paragraph will provide us with some intellectual stimuli or stimulus or whatever the hell stim it is.

Aha - the first use of "Well, dear readers" as the opener to the column happened on February 23, 1998.  I did not repeat it the following week, but did the week after.  Interestingly, I used it on and off for quite a while.  A few weeks after the introduction of that phrase, was the first use of "fershluganah" by The Real A.

Good morning, all! It's not as chilly in the apartment as I thought it would be this morning, but I do need to put on a pair of socks.

Today, I've got everything I did not get to yesterday still waiting for me, and this afternoon I need to go over a vocal arrangement with a conductor friend who needs a tutoral on part writing. I'm currently eating my oatmeal and listening to the incidental music to RASHOMON.

My first internet connection was through Prodigy (about '94 or '95) and there was a theatre bulletin/message board kind of thing going on there that I would post on.  I don't remember ever really getting to know anyone else on there.  I quickly began to realize that it was mostly kids who wanted to talk about nothing else but LES MIZ or PHANTOM.  I kept wondering--where were the adults?

Eventually, I found my way over to the newsgroups on UserNet and rec.arts.theatre.musicals.  For the first four or five years it was a wonderful place with a wide variety of contributors with discussions on old and new shows that ranged from the academic to the silly.  I think during this time I first met DRs Ron Pullium, td and Dan-In-Toronto.

DR MattH, I don't think The Bachelor After The Rose 2 is just a recap of the season. Apparently after the turn of events last night they need to do another update.

And btw2, I am surprised that some DRs were surprised by the turn of events since they were leaked last week.

I think there are some people here who watch this show, but ABC has apparently cancelled LIFE ON MARS. Alathough also apparently they will continue with this season and show the finale.

I am personally really sick of ABC. It's bad enough that they cancel good shows. But for the most part they don't even show the finales (ELI STONE, PUSHING DAISIES, DIRTY SEXY MONEY). Unless one of their new shows really appeals to me I"m not going to watch them.

DR Jennifer - Not all DRs read the "leaks".  And even if we did know what was going to happen in advance, the "execution" of the surprise(s) could not have been properly portrayed in the leaks and spoilers. Cringe, Cringe, Cringe, Cringe.

Apparently part of the reason for the cancellation of the series - and, actually, I believe it's still not an official cancellation - is due to the cost of filming the series in New York City.  I've read a couple of articles over the past few days that production companies - television and movies - are no longer getting the tax breaks they used to get when filming in NYC, thus driving the cost of the filming up.  Some talk shows are even considering on "moving" up to Connecticut.

CORRECTION: I just followed up on the cancellation, and it is indeed cancelled, "won't return for a second season".  However, as DR Jennifer noted, they will "complete" the series.

*There was one funny comment/reason for the cancellation of the series: Whoopi "Kiss of Death" Goldberg.  ;)

They also just need to fill in another slot of programming.  Of course, once "Dancing with the Stars" starts up next week, well, they'll be "full" again.

I had a VERY similar experience when I was on Prodigy. I'd go on these theater boards to talk about FOLLIES or ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY or MAME, and I was looked on as a freak. ALL these folks knew were LES MIZ and PHANTOM, and the Michael Crawford worshippers were so thick that it was sickening. And, of course, since I was not a fan of PHANTOM, I was eprsona non gratia there. I quickly saw the writing on the wall and left.

I believe I first got online back in 1997 or 1998, and I think I was also on Prodigy like many other DRs. Once AOL came along, I did follow the musical theatre group there for a little while. I also subscribed - and still subscribe - to the Sondheim listserv - which is not as active as it used to be.  -But I think that's just due to the fact that we haven't had a brand new Sondheim show every two to three years.

Well, I'm sorry about LIFE ON MARS, but I have to admit I'm not at all surprised. The ratings weren't great when it was on after GREY'S ANATOMY, and they only went down after moving to WEdnesday night. A real shame.

I have to say that ABC has had quite a few promising procedurals in the last few years that they've let slip through their fingers: IN JUSTICE, THE EVIDENCE, EYES, WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB, and now LIFE ON MARS. Unlike CBS which seems to be able to launch procedurals with the blink of the CBS eye, ABC can't seem to get even one to do well for them. Serialized dramas seem to be their forte.

DR Michael Shayne is absolutely correct that the first foray for me into the world of cyberspace was on Fidonet where bulletin boards like GREASEPAINT (where I first met him) and FILM (which I moderated for a while) were the popular means of communication.

I was using my Atari 800XL with a 1200 baud modem then (I had upgraded from a 300 baud modem). My lord, how far we've progressed since those days!

Tuesday morning greetings from the Miami Township branch of Dayton Metro Library!  I'm on my way to 2 meetings with the grant writers and had to return some items and pick up some others.  It's too early to go to the meeting site, so here I am.  On my way here, I had a very interesting session with Debbie the optician, who agreed that the reading portion of my new lenses is pretty skimpy.  They're remaking the lenses and I should have them in a week or so.

Speaking of eBay--I hate, hate, hate the "new search experience" and other "improvements" over the past year.  I will never sell again on eBay, that's for damned sure, and I really don't even buy that much anymore (of course some would say that's because there's nothing left after my first several years there ;)  ).

Speaking of relatives--I'm very, very, very disappointed that this shlub from whom I won two (count 'em) things on eBay who is probably the guy Keith L. tracked down for me who might be my second cousin and might be able to provide info on my father's family can't even take the time to respond to my stalking emails.   (Was that a runon sentence?  Do I care?).  ;)

Unlike CBS which seems to be able to launch procedurals with the blink of the CBS eye, ABC can't seem to get even one to do well for them. Serialized dramas seem to be their forte.

Maybe too many folks are tired of "investing" in new ABC shows just to have the plug pulled, again.

Here's Howard Kissel's take on it. Sometimes all you need to do is simply stage the piece to show you know what to do with it. I loved Zimmerman's METAMORPHOSES but that doesn't mean she's the rght person to be asked back after screwing up LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR last year for the Met.

Do you really use vinegar in your laundry?     :)

I have in the past, but not presently.

However, for how vinegar can added to your personal laundering experience, CLICK HERE (http://home.howstuffworks.com/uses-for-vinegar-doing-laundry-ga.htm).

I really like the breakdown of types of clorthing:

This one might be tres important to our DR DAW:

Delicates: If you're washing delicate items by hand, follow the garment's care instructions, and add 1 or 2 tablespoons of vinegar to the last rinse to help remove soap residue.

A few here might appreciate:

Leather: Clean leather with a mixture of 1 cup boiled linseed oil and 1 cup vinegar. Carefully apply to any spots with a soft cloth. Let dry.

And MBarnum should take note of this one:

Silk: Dip silks (do not soak) in a mixture of 1/2 cup mild detergent, 2 tablespoons vinegar, and 2 quarts cold water. Rinse well, then roll in a heavy towel to soak up the excess moisture. Iron while still damp.

So the relative that is visiting from Minnesota is the wife of my DH's younger brother.  If she were my DH's sister, I would call her my sister-in-law.  But since she is related to his family by marriage, what is her relationship to me, exactly?

Do we need to watch tonight's IDOL?  I can't see there being any other top 2 other than:
Scott McIntyre (blind guy)
Lil Rounds (black mother)

If you don't watch, you'll not see the performance by the other top-three winner. (Remember, you're the one who complains about inadequate exposure.) And without watching, how can you make a personal evaluation on whether or not Scott McIntyre or Lil Rounds earned a top spot?

der Brucer

I didn't say i wouldn't watch. I will.

And yes i have commented about inadequate exposure. That was my point here. the two i mentioned will 90% sure get through to the F12 because of their exposure before they even sing tonight.

It took der B quite a while before he got us Internet access.  He hemmed and hawed, saying it was sure to be this fad and not worth our attention.  It was only after a friend of ours showed him what it was like that he finally buckled under and let it happen in our house, on our computer.

Within an hour of sitting down and playing on the Internet for the first time, I'd already posted over at that Sondheim site our esteemed BK mentioned.  Der B just shook his head and muttered, "It figures."

PINOCCHIO I will tackle when I finish with the BATMAN anthology. The others don't come out until March 24th, so they'll be shuffled in with the three Criterion discs I have waiting.

Then, I watched BATMAN RETURNS. I've never liked this movie very much. It's kind of gross and unsettling, and the Gothic texture of the first one is refined a bit: it's still dark but it's more garishly colorful than the first.

The Blu-ray looks like I had hoped the first one would look: much better than the regular DVD version with true high resolution images and lots of detail. The first one was a bit of the letdown in that regard.

Listening to Rio with its bonus tracks - what a great and wonderful score.  For those who are doing the usual "it's a soundtrack I don't care" thing - this is so delightful you should take a chance - it has a few songs, bossa nova cues, action cues, romantic cues, and Mr. Delerue, who gave the world many incredible scores (Day Of The Dolphin, Shoot The Piano Player, A Little Romance, and hundreds of others) is one of the greats.  Don't miss out on it, it's something else.

West Side Glory: Musical Is A Hit Before Opening

The revival of the famed 1957 musical “West Side Story” is already a hit. Last week its box office take was so good that it finished second only to “Wicked” — even though it doesn’t open officially until March 19th — grossing an astounding $1,042,713 for its first seven shows. I’m told the producers have $10 million cash in the bank, and are aiming — fingers crossed — for a three year run on Broadway.

I took advantage of a snowy Monday and popped into last night’s preview for an early look. Arthur Laurents, the 90 year old writer of “WSS,” is directing the show. He happened to be sitting in front of me. Talk about spry! Just as the show ended, he sprinted up the aisle to give notes to the cast. Last year, Laurents directed Patti Lupone in a revival of another of his shows, “Gypsy.”

I can’t tell you too much about “WSS” just yet except that the theater was full and the audience loved the show. There are no “names” except Matt Cavenaugh, who plays Tony and has appeared in a couple of earlier musicals. He’s a break out star from this, but so is 21 year old Josefina Scaglione. She’s been imported directly from Buenos Aires, looks more Irish than Latina, and is drop dead gorgeous. She’s also a trained opera singer with a stunning voice. The story is that friends of Laurents saw her perform in Buenos Aires. She subsequently put an audition on You Tube, the famed director loved it, and sent for her. Talk about overnight sensation!

Broadway aficionados may rest assured that Jerome Robbins’ extraordinary choreography has been meticulously reproduced by Joey McKneely. The dancing in “WSS” remains not only of the highest standard, but something that truly can be described as “awesome.”

It’s kind of crazy to see “West Side Story” the night after “Guys and Dolls.” It makes you wonder why no one writes real songs anymore. It’s a lost art.

Seems like spring 2009 is going to be all about nostalgia on Broadway, which is fine. But it won’t be so much fun if traffic is all snarled up from turning the Great White Way into a mall. Last night even the people who work at the Palace Theater were wondering aloud about this cockamamie idea.

OK Big Apple residents: what's this "Broadway Mall" bit all about?

$10 Million cash  in the bank - BK will believe after he counts it!

I had a frustrating day.  That's all I'm going to say about it

Well let me tell you about mine and maybe you will feel better:

1.  Today is my "senior choir" day, and we had gotten a request to perform in Vancouver, WA.  I had had a devil of a time getting decent directions on how to get to this retirement home and had ultimately asked for the Administrator, who seemed to know what he was talking about.  We discovered in driving up there today he didn't.  I managed to get there but one of the other carpools got hopelessly lost, creating a lot of stress.

2.  I got home to discover some of the most surly of the workmen who have been doing the development next door were back--the pavers.  They, once again, had completely blocked my driveway and were using the front area of my yard (in front of my fence, but still my property) as a staging area.  Because I had the roofers coming and going, I went out and told them they needed to move, at which point their supervisor started calling me every name in the book, as if I'm doing something wrong to tell them to stop blocking my driveway!  They went on to harass the dogs, who are completely fenced.  I then had the enormous "pleasure" of having my home be in Sensurround for three hours as they tamped down the ground and did the second round of asphalt.

3.  I just came home after swim team with Gabe to a very curt message from an addle-pated woman who had booked my Senior Choir last session, but had then forgotten about it, so when we showed up at her facility, we discovered we couldn't perform.  Anyhoo, she re-booked us, and I called to confirm we were actually on today, and she left a blistering message that of course we were booked, she had put in writing.  She hadn't.

One good thing happened today, and it was quite funny--the owner/developer of the McMansions next door showed up, and, because he's a Fat Cat Republican (you can't convince me otherwise), he parked his Cadillac Escalade pretty much in the middle of the street, literally right under a No Parking sign.  Now I have never seen anything like this in our neighborhood before, but about 30 seconds after he walked down to the development, a Parking Patrol "golf cart" (for wont of a better term) pulled up behind him AND GAVE HIM A TICKET!!!  It was so surreal and funny.

Feel better now, Cilla?

I remember when TJ Edwards would post there under another name whose name escape at the moment/

I think he just might feel welcome here.

I really have no idea, but I kind of doubt it since the board was drying up during my last months there. We would sometimes go for days without a post.

When I went back down, I finished up the bonus features on BATMAN RETURNS. There really weren't too many more featurettes to go. The trailer and the music video went by very quickly, too.

Then I watched BATMAN FOREVER. It wasn't as I remembered it, and I found both villains so over-the-top, trying so desperately to outdo what Nicholson did in the first one that they wore me out long before the movie was over. (Say what you will about BATMAN RETURNS, but at least DeVito and Pfeiffer weren't playing to the camera at every single second of the shoot. They played their characters without resorting to that over-affected shtick and making faces at the camera that Carrey and Jones did in the third one.)

For me, Chris O'Donnell was the real deal in BATMAN FOREVER. He's the one whose performance holds up now 15 years later.

I also had time to listen to about 15 minutes of commentary on BATMAN FOREVER (much of it sounded familiar; I think I must have listened to this one on the DVD) and watch the first three featurettes.

Then I watched AMERICAN IDOL. They back-loaded the show tonight. Except for the wonderful Von, all the best singers seemed to be in the last half: Scott, Lil Rounds, the Puerto Rican guy whose name I can't remember, the woman brought back at the last minute, and the Kelli Pickler clone. They were all very entertaining.

Funny with all the talk earlier today about watching or not watching tonight. I think it was the best of the three rounds overall.

I finished my evening by skimming through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No boys and they weren't in the previews either.

I just order ANYA.

I think it will be a nice companion recording to Anastasia Affaire aka Anastasia: The Musical which was a revised version of ANYA

A. It was a shame Von Smith went first - it was overwhealmed by the poor performances that followed.

B. The Puerto Rican guy was Jorge Nuñez - whom, I suspect. will get third.

C. Woman brought back at the last minute was Felicia Barten, and the country gal was Kendall Beard. Together with Von, they may get wild card pick-ups.

D. The rest were remarkably forgettable.

You should be gaining some affection for the 2nd Amendment.

Finished with my viewing for the evening and am listening to the London cast album of Irma La Douce - released by a London company that specializes in public domain releases - it's mastered from LP and it's okay - not nearly as good as my mastering guy is, but it's interesting hearing the differences between this and the B'way cast album which had slightly different orchestrations (augmented by Robert Ginzler).

I ate something called kettle corn - I thought I was buying regular low-fat popcorn, but this crap was GROSS - sweet and yuckilicious.

Oooh.. I love Kettle Corn - salty and sweet! However...

Since most commercially sold popcorn is now air-popped - at least the stuff I see on the shelves - it's all basically "low-fat".  Now, if it cheddar-flavored, that might be a different story.  But, "low-fat popcorn" is just as special as "low-fat vegetables" - and I have seen pre-packs of carrots and celery sticks marked "low-fat, no cholesterol" - well, DUH!

Yikes, since the tax office is at 36th & 7th, that closing might make traffic bad for me over on 7th.

I think the traffic down at 36th & 7th should be "normal".  They already have the "Broadway Mall" set up from Times Square to Herald Square - the added bike lane and the "green space" with the café tables - which has already taken away a lane of traffic there.  And most of the traffic coming from the north has already been diverted onto 7th Ave. between 46th & 44th - "The Times Square Shuffle".

Was it pre-popped or a micro-wave version?

(The Microwave versions contain a sugar-substitute rather than real sugar).
