Well, if the first CD you fully produced was Liz Callaway's Loesser album, then that's the first one I bought.  And played and played and played.  It's gorgeous.

And I think I own just about every other bk CD, before and since then.

Great notes again today, bk!    :)

I'm going to the theatre tonight. I'm seeing Impressionism. with Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen.

It's the story of an international photojournalist and a New York gallery owner whose unexpected brush with intimacy leads them to realize that there is quite an art to repairing broken lives.

The rest of the cast includes Tony Award® nominee André De Shields, Michael T. Weiss, Aaron Lazar, Margarita Levieva, Hadley Delany, and four-time Academy Award® nominee Marsha Mason as Julia.

I'm very glad Larry enjoyed Blithe Spirit. His feelings mirror mine.

I made a new pot of iced tea last night before snuggling down with a biography of the Barrymores. I'm still in the early years but it's quite a good read. Miss Ethel was the star before either of her brothers.

I also seem to remember hearing this but Winston Churchill was quite taken with Miss Barrymore and pursued her every time she came to London. The problem was he wanted her but he also wanted her to retire from the stage and become a quiet politician's wife. That was not in the cards for Miss Barrymore.

Some notes from today’s notes

I just had to go and listen to the songs that are mentioned in today’s notes.

1)  Joey, Joey, Joey is one of my favorite  tracks from the Liz Callaway album. (My top favorite is My Heart Is So Full Of You).

2) Multitudes of Amy is also one of my tracks from Unsung Sondheim. I think Michael Rupert was a great choice and always wondered why more singers didn’t pick up this song. I’ve heard Sondheim’s demo and it is there and Larry Moore did a wonderful job in the orchestra. Jamie Anderson on the Sondheim Celebration as good singer he is, the arrangement slows down the song and makes it almost a snooze fest. Rupert’s is the best.

3) I like to mention that Toonful was popular overseas, especially in Japan. As well as the other two in the series.

4) If you thought When Time Ran Out was long at 109 minutes trying watching it as The Day the World Ended (It’s original title) at 141 minutes! One critic called the film “When Ideas Ran Out” Terrible film and very studio bound and awful visual effects.

Good morning, all! After I signed off, I watched the TOP CHEF reunion and trned off the tv around 12:57. The alarm went off at 6:30, I nodded for 30 minutes and then decided it was time to move. I have to be out of the house around 9 for my walk down to 54th and 12th to Carroll Studios. I'm going to the Encores!orchestra reading of FINIAN'S RAINBOW and very much looking forward to hearing it.

BK, the notes were a real nostalgia blitz! The only spot where my memory disagrees with you is the end of "Multitudes of Amys," which I figured out because the MD couldn't. What I can't remember about that now is whether you or he told me that BK wanted an extended ending!

I need more coffee.

TOD

If you produced STAGES, then it was the first one. If not.....

It just might be Anastasia Affaire as it was the closest thing to a cast recording of ANYA available at that time.

but for sure it was Unsung Sondheim followed Liz Callaway's album.

I heard about many of the these recordings from the late lamented quarterly SHOW MUSIC. I own every issue there was. From a typed double sided Xerox printed newsletter, to booklet form and finally a glossy magazine.

DR MICHAEL S - I think you asked this question yesterday - I know one of the names Constance Moore, an actress at Paramount for many years.  She replaced Frances Farmer in Preston Sturges' comedy Take a Letter, Darling.  She sang a lot in her movies for Universal and Republic, so my guess is that she did some recording.

Actually I think it was Unsung Irving Berlin which was the only 2CD set that BK recorded in the Unsung Series. There was also a "highlight" version.

And I am anxiously looking forward to more recordings by Billy Waring whose only album this was.

I see my usual 5 minutes in the morning reading BK's notes will not work today.  I'll have to post again when I get home from work.  I'm at Starbucks every Saturday and Sunday morning.  Black coffee only, they  look at me rather amused. I have 3 within walking distance of my new apartment.  Meet BK at LACC, at one of the season plays, the box office simply said " if you like theatre ,talk to that guy over there" and we did. Next came the summer cabaret series at LACC , say every show and then of course "The Brain from Planet X". See you later.

I'm loving the stroll down memory lane, BK.  But with your whole life passing before our eyes, I hope you're not dying or anything.  If not, more tales of yore, please!

I don't recall my first BK-produced album.  I know I had several Bay Cities and Vareses when I began noticing this name Bruce Kimmel on all the CDs.  I then started to seek out Bruce Kimmel-produced CDs, knowing that the name stood for quality and taste.

We actually "met" years before we really met.  You were once in Malcolm and Christine's cramp little bookstore in their old location (with a lovely young companion).  Either Malcolm introduced us or your name was dropped and I introduced myself and mentioned that I was a fan of your CDs.  You graciously accepted the compliment of a fan, went about your purchases and I, mine.

It was, of course, years later, that I was in Malcolm and Christine's at their new location and you were giving a reading of Benjamin Kritzer and the seeds of a friendship were sown.

My first Kimmel-produced recording was CHICAGO on Bay Cities. FORUM followed soon after.

If you want to discount those, then it was definitely UNSUNG SONDHEIM which for many years was my favorite Kimmel produced CD. I loved many of the UNSUNG and LOST albums, but UNSUNG SONDHEIM and its "sequel" SONDHEIM AT THE MOVIES remain two my two favorites and unquestionably the most played.

Yep, WHEN TIME RAN OUT was prophetically named: it was the last nail in the coffin for disaster pictures. They've come back into vogue in the years since CGI came along, but it was the last of its kind for a long time.

I know I had certainly grown tired of them.

My work project today will be the Blu-ray release of PINOCCHIO, and I can't wait to watch it.

I took out my old DVD a month or so ago and watched, and it was a fine transfer for the early years of DVD, but I'm certain the Blu-ray (and the regular DVD which is also included in the Blu-ray case) will constitute a big upgrade in picture and sound quality. The Blu-ray has the restored mono sound and a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 encoding!

I was really unhappy with the selections. I am okay with 4 guys and 4 girls going through (not sure if they did that on purpose). But I thought Group 3 was strong. And they only selected one from that group. They took 4 from group 1 and 3 from group 2. So basically the people from the first group who sucked all got through because of their potential. I am okay with the judges thinking about potential (maybe they just had a bad night and a bad song). But only 1 person from the last group???  And of all the people they chose tatiana. I cannot stand her and was thankful i would never have to see her again. I'm still hoping they don't choose her. But if they choose 2 girls (as i suspect) then one could be her. Uggh!  I really hope they chose megan. And i think a lot of people are suspecting anoop (sp?) will be chosen.

 1st CD  "A Broadway Christmas"-- still a favorite
 2nd CD  "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile"
 "Prime Time Musicals" may have been next or "Best of Cabaret."   At any rate my next CD's were Liz Callaway's and the one by Mary Cleere Haran.  I had bought "Toonful"  for my niece (and she loved it), but I never got a copy for me.
At some point right around there, things really began to gel when I got one of the "Lost in Boston" CD's that had Karen Morrow singing what I still think is the best song from "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom" and Guy Haines singing "Evening Star."

~~~~FEEL BETTER VIBES FOR DR GINNY~~~~~
Thanks for that, DR Vixmom.  My cold has not developed, so I'm thinking it's just allergies.
That is good to hear.  I too am pondering if I am having mild allergies or the slight beginnings of a cold.  Knowing me, I'm going with mild allergies.
I don't know which BK produced CD was the first that I owned.  I have "The Anastasia Affaire" and a couple others from Bay Cities and I think I bought it new.  I also remember when both "Unsung Sondheim" and "Liz Callaway Sings Frank Loesser" were released.  I instantly fell in love with both of those.  I did get many of BK's recordings, but I don't have every single one...many, but not all.
I hate to admit it but it wasn't BK's name that I first noticed on all the CDs that I loved, it was the color of the spine.  The cover art was all very different, but the same color was used on the side of every CD and it was very easy to identify which were from Varèse Sarabande.  It was then that I realized that the producer of all these CDs was the same.  Then I understood. :)
TOD:  I was in Naples, Italy, when I first discovered there was a "Bay Cities" label.  I don't recall whether my first purchase was "Return to Oz" (via Intrada, with which I got some literature on other Bay Cities titles) or whether I saw "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" listed and ordered that one first.  Either way, "A Funny Thing..." was my first BK-produced CD.
I watched the last of my Crown International Pictures goodies last night.
Best Friends with Richard Hatch (Battlestar Galactica) was okay - The Sister In Law with Mr John Savage was very good.  Everything else was typical of CIP.....
Malibu High - high school girl flunking all her classes loses her boyfriend to a rich rival so she does what is expected, becomes a prostitute giving favors to her teachers for good grades, and eventually leaving her first pimp (her grass connection who owns a groovy van) to work for a sleazier pimp with more hair on his back than Robin Williams - and then onto HIT WOMAN.....alas this is not a career trajectory that turns out well for her......in fact it is fatal.  Poor Kim (Jill Lansing) never graduates from Malibu High.....but she doesn't flunk out!
I met with the therapist.  She didn't say a word about last time so I did not bring it up.  However when I checked in at the receptionist desk after writing my name on the "checkin  list" I stood there until teh receptionist acknowledged me.  She said "If you wrote your name you can go st down in the waiting room"  So I said 'Well last week I waited over an hour only to be told that the therapist forgot about me and went to lunch - so I want to be sure that you know I am here"
So she announced me to the therapist right away and I was taken in immediately
Apparently the test is to make sure that the food is going into my stomach not my lungs.  If all turns out OK in the filming then I guess she will give me a list of foods I can start trying to eat.
I was quite pleased that the applesauce tasted good.  I di find it difficult to swallow though so I think I still have some time to go before I can be "can free"
That was my thought as well but apparently there can be some  "minor leakage" which I won't immediately  notice.  I was just surprised by how much work it was to swallow a small amount of applesauce, it was less than a teaspoon and you would have thought I was trying to swallow a whole steak.
When I got in, I immediately watched PINOCCHIO. It's beyond spectacular in terms of color, sharpness, and SUCH detail. I couldn't believe I noticed so many things I had NEVER noticed before.
The DTS-HD MA 7.1 sound is just fine, but after the first part of the film is very noticeably surround, it's like they kind of forgot about it (or maybe they just didn't have sound stems to use) because it collapses into the center channel for much of the film. Once Monstro enters the picture, then the sound really picks up again, and there is low rolling bass that gives that entire sequence real menace.
Last night DR Sam had reminiscences about Jr High and the non-hard-core academic courses like cooking, sewing, wood shop, auto shop, printing, dancing (remember square dancing class?).
Well, in two brief years in Jr High, I had Wood Shop, Electricity Shop, Print shop (which involved hand setting printing presses), Mechanical Drawing, Folk Dancing (square, Polka, Hora, etc) and the ever-valuable JBT (Junior Business Training). IN JBT we learned letter writing, checking account maintenance, menu planning, shopping to a budget (which included evaluating the food store ads in the newspapers) and shopping for life insurance. Ginny will be glad to know we also had a compulsory class in Library Utilization. My only exposure to the “girls” classes came when I was in desperate need to have a button reattached to a jacket – a counselor sent me to the sewing teacher who proceeded to insist I take a seat in the class which was underway while she directed me in how to attach a button (actually, as I learned, there are two different ways, depending on how much play the button requires (shirts none, heavy jackets, a lot).
Then, I started the film again to get the Cine-Explore experience which is the picture-in-picture commentary with lots of windows opening to show storyboards, live action guide footage, stills, clips from the Disney TV show with the various animators talking about their work on the picture.
You get the audio commentary on the regular DVD but these pop-up windows with all this other stuff is exclusive to Blu-ray.
I thought about DR JRand filling his screen when I tried the next bonus feature which is called "Disney View" Instead of black bars on the sides for this 1.33:1 movie, you can pick this and get drawn panels which match the motifs of the various scenes so it extends picture elements to the sides of the widescreen TV.
It works OK as long as the camera is still, but I found it distracting whenever the camera moves and those panels remain stationary. I'd never want to watch the movie using it, but I'm sure others would have no trouble with it.
When the Vixter was in 6th and 7th grade in middle school (or maybeit was 7th and 8th grades) she had mandatory shop class for half the year and what I would term a home ec class the other half of the year.  It was mandatory for boys and girls.
I know they did some sewing, some cooking,  and wood shop stuff.
Back when I was in high school I wanted to take wood shop but I was not allowed as it was open to boys only.  I refused to take the home ec classes on prncipal and ended up filling in my schedule with extra English electives
Back from picking up DVDs (Kevin has already picked up his and Sean's copy) and various errands and whatnot.  I'm really hungry and am just trying to decide if I want to go sit somewhere and proof, or eat here.  I'm thinking go sit somewhere and proof.
What are you proofing?
I hope DR JOSE is listening to some interesting people so we can have a report today.  What are all of these people auditioning for?  I must have missed that post.
THINGS I LEARNED FROM WATCHING 16 MOVIES RELEASED BY CROWN INTERNATIONAL PICTURES:
1. All high school seniors are at least 22 years old.
2. No matter what is happening or how many people are around, if there is a telephone in the shot, it will ring.
3. No one who owns a convertible ever puts up the top.
4. If you put blue cellophane on your sliding glass doors, everyone will think it's night time.
5. If you are a female, you must remove ALL of your clothes to wash your face and/or brush your hair.
6. The girl with the smallest breasts will die first.
7. Men's plaid suits should be double breasted and worn with pastel shirts and BIG KNOTTED ties.
8. Beautiful women shower at least six times a day....especially when they have company or are expecting gentleman callers ANY minute.
9.  There is no such thing as inappropriate music.  All music fits any situation.
10. At least one person appearing in a supporting role will have the same last name as one of the producers, and this person will wear the BEST clothes in the movie.
I can't think of a better way to while away a day than listening to a 30-piece orchestra play the score of FINIAN'S RAINBOW. The fact that Rob Berman makes music on the podium rather than just beating time, as several MDs I know are prone to do, only made the event more glorious. I think the production is going to be good and I can't wait to see it.
Now, where the hell's the check Citibank was supposed to mail me on Monday? I guess tomorrow I need to kick ass at the bank.
Went over to Jery's and sat for ninety minutes - eating a turkey and bacon sandwich and fries, and proofing about thirty-five pages.  I have to say it, this is my favorite of the Hofstetter books, mostly because of its milieu and the fact that aside from best friend Billy, she only interacts with older people in this book.  I haven't looked at this since finishing it, really, and it's holding my interest, I really like the characters, and it's pretty funny and there is a LOT of rain and a LOT of food in this book, all good things.
I'm going to the theatre tonight. I'm seeing Impressionism. with Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen.
It's the story of an international photojournalist and a New York gallery owner whose unexpected brush with intimacy leads them to realize that there is quite an art to repairing broken lives.
The rest of the cast includes Tony Award® nominee André De Shields, Michael T. Weiss, Aaron Lazar, Margarita Levieva, Hadley Delany, and four-time Academy Award® nominee Marsha Mason as Julia.
I'm very glad Larry enjoyed Blithe Spirit. His feelings mirror mine.
Michael T. Weiss is on stage in New York and I am still in Tacoma?
Last night DR Sam had reminiscences about Jr High and the non-hard-core academic courses like cooking, sewing, wood shop, auto shop, printing, dancing (remember square dancing class?).
Well, in two brief years in Jr High, I had Wood Shop, Electricity Shop, Print shop (which involved hand setting printing presses), Mechanical Drawing, Folk Dancing (square, Polka, Hora, etc) and the ever-valuable JBT (Junior Business Training). IN JBT we learned letter writing, checking account maintenance, menu planning, shopping to a budget (which included evaluating the food store ads in the newspapers) and shopping for life insurance. Ginny will be glad to know we also had a compulsory class in Library Utilization. My only exposure to the “girls” classes came when I was in desperate need to have a button reattached to a jacket – a counselor sent me to the sewing teacher who proceeded to insist I take a seat in the class which was underway while she directed me in how to attach a button (actually, as I learned, there are two different ways, depending on how much play the button requires (shirts none, heavy jackets, a lot).
Since this is mostly a theatre group, so that I fit in, this is my short as possible history.  First live performance I remember is the "Four Seasons" at the Coconut Grove ,  Jr. High School graduation  dinner with my friend and her parents.  Then the late 60's/early 70's (rock n roll boyfriend) everyone had a VW bus and 20 or more of us would all go to concerts, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Blue Cheer, "Hair" at the Aquarius Theatre.  Late 70's/early 80's (new boyfriend told me I was really tone deft) season tickets for the Music Center, LA Phil, UCLA, learned not to fall asleep at the ballet or opera.  Mid 80's "Chorus Line" at the Shubert Theatre, Chick Corea,  Santana.  Late 80's/90's/early 2000's, mostly Jazz, takes a year for me to listen to all the cd's, Cinegrill and clubs on the Redondo Beach Pier.  Since 2002 I just buy what I like , mostly world music, (and Kritzerland and anything BK produced) and try to see at least one or more live performance a month.  In LA a lot is still affordable and some even free.  Last month was , Culture Clash, Vomit, Taylor Negron, and About Production's young theatre works. hope spelling and grammar are ok.
DR Sam I'm glad you aren't afraid of all dogs.  People are shocked to learn I was afraid of large dogs as a child.  Odd, since only a small dog ever bit me.  A few too many times my small self ended up between our miniature/toy Poodle & a large dog that intended harm to our little dog.
I eventually grew some & learned how to read dogs.  The combination has made life more relaxing.  I really feel for people who are afraid of dogs & try to watch out for them when we walk down the street with our 107 pound dog.
Day one - 270 auditions - done, and just two more day (another 540 auditions) to go!
Whew!
*But that's a "good" Whew!  The anxiety and stress level seemed really low today among the auditionees, and that made all the difference in the world in regards to how the pacing of the day felt.  In fact, when we broke for lunch at 1:00, I thought it was only Noon.  -And that was a good thing, a very good thing.  And the afternoon session went by "fast" too.  :)
As for the Topic of the Day...
For some reason, I'm thinking Judy Kuhn's "Just In Time" album was my first BK-produced CD I ever bought. -At least it's the first I remember buying.  But it might have been "Unsung Musicals (I)" or "Unsung Irving Berlin".  -Strangely enough, it took a few years to "catch up" on "Unsung Sondheim" - mainly because I already had almost all of those songs in manuscript (sheet music copies) via the Library of Congress.
We had home ec and one quarter of shop, we did square dancing and disco dancing in PE
DR Sam, George is really good at making your photo avatar size. If you PM him, he will probably help. He's a nice guy.
Why, yes I am. ;)
I would be more than happy to help with your avatar, Sam.  Just e-mail the picture to me and I'll do what I can.
I've decided to stop paying the fees for Weight Watchers and start doing it on my own for awhile. I'm getting too busy to leave work early for the meeting I like to go to and it isn't like I don't know how to do it.  So, I'm prepaid until Mid April, then I'm going to be on my own.
The show has an unannounced time over-run of 3-4 minutes - and you really, really, really want to see the last few minutes!
I'm sorry but I just have to say it.
Ewwww!
I loved her on The Cosby Show but everything I've seen her in on stage over the past few years has been affected and phony and dreadful. I cannot imagine her in that role.
I am glad to hear about Story of My Life!
My good friends Mustafa and Capt. Jason Faler were interviewed on NPR recently, telling of Jason and Mustafa's friendship and how his organization helped bring Mustafa and his family to the states.
Here is the link to the interview. I hope you will listen. It is fairly short.
Jason is one in a million for what he is doing to help the interpreters that helped he and his unit while in Iraq, and Mustafa is such a dear, dear person.
I learned double deck at the age of 8, outside of Annapolis at my great aunt and uncle's house.  This continued to our relatives' house in Baltimore.  By the time I was twelve, an Air Force couple had moved into the nike site next to our church and they were double deck players; our families would get together every weekend to play all-nighters.  I was the fill-in for naps, snacks and the like.
So, maybe not snipes, but military-oriented teachers all taught me what I know.
I know that I'm not a big fan of Cut-throat pinochle. . .
Well, my folks in Philly were part of a 6 couple pinochle club that travelled from house to house monthy - all single deck. (It took me years to realize that CC and Ginger was not a game requirement.)
Once I hit the Navy is was all double deck - or three player Auction. Of course once I went to college, it was Bridge all the way.
She had me eat some applesauce while she kpet her hands on my throat while I swallowed.  She kept making me turn my head in different directions while I swallowed.  Then she had me do it while drinking water.
I have to go back tomorrow morning and have a radiation film done while I eat something.
Did she make you talk while you were drinking water? Maybe you could take that act on the road!
