Dora the Explorer dolls get controversial new look
Dora the Explorer is getting a makeover.

The cutsie cartoon character is ditching her shorts and the neat little backpack for what her creators are calling a "new
fashionable look."

Although the new Dora will not be officially unveiled until fall, Nickelodeon and Mattel released a silhouette of the revamped figure that shows her with long locks, a short skirt and pointed ballet pumps.

Creators of Dora the Explorer, a favorite character among preschoolers that teaches kids English and Spanish, say they are just making her move with the times.

The tweenage Dora will live in the big city, attend middle school and have a new wardrobe and accessories.

Well, if she's to have no back-pack, she needs a purse.

Our modern girls needs something to hold her condoms.

1:30 seems to be my weekend time to quit doing things for the day.  The new U2 cd is really good,  after which l had to listen to Jeff Beck's  Guero  cd, also really good.   Then to really confuse my neighbors I put on BK's Prime Time Musicals.  Absolutely wish Guy Haines has a new cd in his future.

One night when I was driving through Forrest Hills up by Sacramento, a deer was in the middle of the road looking straight into the headlights.  The day before when we arrived at our friends house, he told us what to do because the area is filled with deer.  To just turn off our headlights, stop the car, and wait.  I was by myself and really unsure of what happens.  When I turned the lights back on, it was gone, never drove at night again.

small memory from living in Arizona.  Maybe 1961, we lived in one of 4 houses that were next to a radio station.  I never saw anyone going in or out of the building, there were no alarms, or security patrols, or dead bolts on doors in those days.  But I do remember looking in the windows and seeing 100's and 100's of records, stacks and stacks just collecting dust.  The station had closed,  they locked the doors, and just left everything inside.

The deer couldn't have cared less about all the filliBuster.  He (or was it a she?) just stood and stared for a long time, and then turned and sauntered off.  Very unusual, since there are typically a group of deer together, and this one was going it alone.

I spent most of yesterday off-line.  I was waiting to get called in to work, but of course the lass who was supposed to be calling out didn't.

Not that the time was wasted.  I decided it was time to get a database going on all the cookbooks I've got in my library.  I spent the day hauling stacks from my room to the den, did the data entry, then hauled back and got another stack.  331 titles so far, and I've still got several shelves to go.

Oh, and I am already at the Birmingham airport - which, apparently, is the largest airport in Alabama.  Hmmm..  -At least according to the airport's website.
Title: Re: AND THIS IS MY BELOVED
Post by: JoseSPiano on March 08, 2009, 05:17:46 AM
Of course, since I went ahead and decided to get to the airport a little earlier than usual, the US Airways check-in desk was (still) closed.  It turned out their computer system was down - at least the one here in BHM.  After standing in line for about 20 minutes, they finally opened up... And the USAirways staff started writing(!) out the tickets and boarding passes, and checking everyone in via the flight manifests.  Very old school. ;) And slow. :-\  *And the line was about 30 deep by the time I had my boarding passes.

In any case, I still made it to my gate in plenty of time for my flight's 8:04am departure.  This may be Alabama's largest airport, but I think the walk from the tickets desks to the gates is only about 600 feet.

OMG i am so so so tired. It does not feel like 9 o'clock.

My niece decided to sleep in my waterbed with me (she often does). And for some reason she kept flipping over on me during the night! And she decided to get up at 6am (now 7am). So i am tired.

re: the new Dora. I will wait to see her till I decide. They updated Strawberry Shortcake too. And it took a while to get used to her.  My niece is in love with Dora still (she is watching a Dora movie too). Hopefully the new Dora will still have similar content even if she lives in the city and goes to school.

I dragged out a wireless keyboard that I was given for Christmas several years ago, and it's taking some adjustments to get used to the touch of it again. I just thought it'd be fun to switch up the keyboards for a bit, but I hope my fingers do a quick adjustment. The touch is SO much different from the keyboard I've been using for the last year or so.

Even though it's grey and cloudy the temperatures are pleasant. I was out earlier. I ran the virus scan (now that I have Service Pack 2 and 3 on XP my computer changes itself) and went out while it did it's thing. I changed the old fashioned tick tock clocks last night and I changed the microwave and I changed the VCR clock. It's an older VCR and the DST function is set for the old switch dates so I turned it off and manually change the clocks. Everything is up to date. I assume my computer at the office will switch over. Anthony has the laptop and it's SP2 and 3'd so it will change over as well. 19 days and counting until my trip to Wisconsin.

Circuit City on 14th and 4th Avenue will be closing today. It's 11am so they should be open now. I walked by at around 10am and there was a large crowd waiting and they were not happy when a soon to be ex-employee came out and said they would not be opening until 11am. I was in the store last week and there is almost nothing there to buy, it's just a bunch of picked over junk. Now on the last day they have things advertised as 60-90 percent off (original) price but TVs are still only 15 percent off (original) price.

Re: The Order of the Songs

That I believe was usually the norm in LP days. trying to get as many songs per side as possible even if it meant shifting things around.

Also according to IBDB the Sondheim song is listed in the song list for Illya Darling; as well as several reprises.

People, like DR Cillaliz and I, who like Van Morrison and his music, should have no complaints about Pierce Brosnan's singing in MAMMA MIA!

Actually, I didn't complain about Pierce Brosnan's singing.  I'm of the opinon that some characters, like real people, don't have to have wonderful singing voices.

So to avoid tax returns, i've been developing the "I'm Still Queer" song.  Normally, i just know inherently when something is parody of the actual song I'm parodying - but here, I'm wondering if I'm actually parodying "I'm Still Here" or just riffing on it such that I'd have to get permission to ever use it.

Football and hockey
I've played them all and my dear
I'm still queer
Rooted for Rocky
Clutching a burger and beer
But I'm queer

I've let my eyebrows
Go unchecked
Snoozed when the highbrows
Spoke of Brecht
Missed Lincoln Center's King Lear
But I'm queer

I sat through Shogun
Stood up and clapped at the end
But I’m queer
I like Seth Rogen
Though I mean just as a friend
But I’m queer

Read books by Bantam
Many times
I cheered at Phantom
Loved the rhymes
I couldn’t cotton to Peter Grimes or The Weir
And I walked out on Steel Pier
But I’m queer

Can’t talk about Audrey or Katharine Hepburn
Please, no one ask me again
When you can't talk Audrey or Katharine Hepburn
No one believes you love men

Never missed Dino
Never saw Beverly Sills
But I’m queer
I need a Beano
When the kids praise Peter Mills
But I’m queer

Some folk prefer a gay cliche
I can’t defer, that’s not my way
I don’t get Logo or Here
But I’m quee-eer

Lord knows, I loved Martin Guerre
And I’m queer
Look who’s queer
I’m still queer

Had a lovely day yesterday with my sister. We visited cousin Molly, hit some thrift shops, then headed to Tigard to Benny's 4th birthday party. Lots of rugrats.

Now to finish the absolutely wonderful Bollywood movie I started last night...APRADHI KAUN? (1957) starring my new favorite yesteryear actor Abhi Battacharya and a very young looking Mala Sinha.

It is a nifty old dark house murder mystery. My favorite kind of movie. And this one is very well done with lots of interesting characters. Of course Lily, the nightclub entertainer, is my favorite.

In any case...

Our flight left Birmingham about 25 minutes late, and was at the gate in Charlotte about 15 minutes past the scheduled time.  Of course, almost everyone on the plane had connecting flights to catch, so everyone tried to run off the plane as soon as we landed.  Of course, since we had to gate-check our "larger" carry-ons, most of them ended up waiting in the breezeway for their carry-ons to be loaded off the plane.  One of those people included the woman who sat next to me.

When I boarded in Birmingham, I noticed that she had placed her large backpack, her bag of food, and another bag of assorted stuff in the overhead bin.  She didn't place anything under the seat in front of her.  Of course, since I wanted to place my laptop bag up there too...

"I'm going to place my laptop bag up here."
-You can't do that since I have my stuff up here.
"The overhead bins are for everyone, not just for you."

-Then I placed my laptop bag in the overhead bin... and she didn't have to adjust the place of her bags.

And when we landed in Charlotte, she was the first one up and out of her seat.  Of course, to do that, she had to climb over me in order to get into the aisle - she had the window seat. And, of course, since everyone else in the plane wanted to do the same thing, she ended up trapped in the aisle for a while... And then she had to wait in the breezeway again for her checked carry-on...

My carry-on was the second bag placed on the deck.  I have no idea when her bag was unloaded.  ;)

I did make an initial attempt to reclaim the coat that I had left on the plane on my trip down, but just didn't feel it was worth the hassle and frustration of dealing with the ornery and apathetic airport personnel.  Actually, the personnel in Charlotte were friendly.  Alas, after making a call down to their Lost and Found, they said that nothing had been turned in.  -And that there may have been a chance that it may have already been sent to their main Lost and Found unit.  In Pittsburgh.

But they did say that there was a chance that it could have ended up back in NYC since that aircraft flew right back to NYC.  Well... After simply asking, "Where is the Lost and Found unit?" to two LGA personnel, well... I was just really glad that the temps here in NYC this afternoon, were not the previously forecasted low 40s.

I then watched four more JAG episodes. Two of those four were the round-about pilot for NCIS. Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherley, Pauley Perette, and David McCallum were already in place when the show began its run that September. Lots of fun seeing the genesis of what has become one of the most popular shows on television.

And that two-part pilot also got rid of the character of Loren Singer (played by star David James Elliott's real-life wife) since she was the murdered Navy officer NCIS was investigation. Naturally, Elliott became their leading suspect, and things did indeed look dark for him until a reversal late in the show's second hour.

I am off to Sunday Brunch at the Red Wind Casino!  Maybe I will see DR George and his folks there.

Sadly, no.  I'm still at home.  I hope you enjoyed it.  This evening, my sister, her boyfriend and I are all going up to Seattle to Jazz Alley to see The Manhattan Transfer (http://www.jazzalley.com/artist.asp?artistid=686) live!  I saw them there about a year and a half ago and they were fantastic (as usual)!  It'll be great!  If I'd had the money (and the foresight), I would've gotten another ticket and stayed for both shows tonight.  Tonight is the last night of their four-night run.  They did two shows a night and that's what they did the last time.  But what was cool (when I stayed for both shows last time), was that they were practically two different sets!  I recall only two songs repeated between the shows.  But I'm not going alone tonight and I'm not driving.  But I'll get to see them and have dinner. :)

Re: The Order of the Songs

That I believe was usually the norm in LP days. trying to get as many songs per side as possible even if it meant shifting things around.

Also according to IBDB the Sondheim song is listed in the song list for Illya Darling; as well as several reprises.

I'd read that another reason songs/tracks were put in the wrong show order on vinyl albums was that different places on the album can affect the sound.

I was errant and truant, yesterday.  I went to work, then had a late lunch at Taco Del Mar (I had a filled punch card, so I got $5 off my order!).  I then went to Border's to see if there was anything that I wanted to get with my 30% off coupon (there wasn't...at least, nothing that I couldn't get cheaper anywhere else even without the coupon :-\), then I went to my sister's house.  Our parents came over and we just visited for a couple of hours.

I came home, watched some TV and then tried something that I hadn't done before.  I hooked the cable directly to my hi-def TV, by-passing the cable box.  I then had it scan the channels and what a difference!  I think that all the channels that are available directly through the cable using the TV digital tuner are available through the cable box, but in very different places.  I'd never known about channel 4 and channel 4-1...channel 90-332, 90-333, 90-334, etc.  And the standard broadcast version of ABC is on three different channels!  What's that all about?
Title: Re: AND THIS IS MY BELOVED
Post by: George on March 08, 2009, 03:05:19 PM
Anyway, when I first got the TV, I had to split the cable to go to the TV and to my computer.  I originally wanted to split the TV cable again to go to the DVR cable box and my DVD burner.  But the split weakened the signal too much.  Watching through the cable box, some of the local channels were pixilated and most of the digital music channels couldn't even come in.  When I only split the cable to my computer and the DVR cable box, everything was okay.  So last night, I put all back the way it was because I need to record shows when I'm in Seattle. :)

That is very interesting. I never heard about that before.

I remember when Dreamgirls was first issued on LP they only recorded a portion of the score and each side was going to have x amount of minutes for optimum sound.

So I guess there is something to that.

Thanks for the input.

Ate a sandwich, and am now about to give up on a Lelouch movie called Smic, Smac, Smoc - the first bad Lelouch I've ever seen - almost completely improvised for ninety minutes, with scenes just going on beyond human endurance  - a slice of life but not interesting.

Sunday evening greetings!  We are back home after our visit to the Anglican church in Lima, OH, where they have a lovely building and more worshipers than we have in Cincinnati, but no full-time clergy.  They really, really want Richard, so we're going to try going there on Sundays.  It's a bit longer drive, but won't eat up our Sundays any more than going to Cincinnati.  In fact, today we were home from Lima before we'd have been home from Cincinnati, because the Lima service starts 90 minutes earlier.  We've made it clear to them that now is not the time for us to move away from SW Ohio.

Good morning everyone!!!!...I think...

On a better note, I'm sure you've all heard from Mom already. She can talk again!!!!!! 8D
Yesterday, I heard that she actully ate some toast, and I saw her eating ice-cream, so I'm very happy that the worst of this all is almost over.

I hope I get to see you all soon!!!!! I miss you all so much!!!!! And good luck to you Jose!!!! Have a safe trip!!!!!!

NY DAILY NEWS (http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2009/03/06/2009-03-06_dora_the_explorer_dolls_get_controversia.html)

Quote
Dora the Explorer dolls get controversial new look

...The tweenage Dora will live in the big city, attend middle school and have a new wardrobe and accessories.

Well, if she's to have no back-pack, she needs a purse.

Our modern girls needs something to hold her condoms.

PS And I hear Barbie is getting tatoos!

...Oh great. Just when I thought I couldn't hate that show more. So, I guess Boots and Swiper are getting cut from the cast then.

                                                                   The Vixter

No, Boots is going to be her pimp daddy, and Swiper their dealer.  They're both getting makeovers, too, with lots of bling.  And Swiper is going to sport a Barbie tattoo on his left arm.

...I'm sad to say I can see that happening... AH!!!!! THE MENTAL IMAGES BURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's next, Dora and Deigo go through step-by-step how babies are made while they're alone in Dora's apartment with visual aid, or somthing?!?!?!?!? Nickalodeon's going nuts!!!!! And the sad thing is last year, the girl who does Dora's voice was at my school. She has got to be not likeing these changes to Dora.

After watching The Far Pavilions this weekend, I realized that I need to re-read teh book again. I have only read it three times since 1984. I can see why teh critics called it the Indian Gone with the Wind.

It is a good story.

Michael have you seen it?

The only issue I have with it is the audio volume level is not consistent and in a few spots I found myself turning up and turning it down. I rented the DVD from the library. I am seriously considering getting a copy. Any word if a digital copy of this will be released? the DVD is in analog form and the older ratio.

So to avoid tax returns, i've been developing the "I'm Still Queer" song.  Normally, i just know inherently when something is parody of the actual song I'm parodying - but here, I'm wondering if I'm actually parodying "I'm Still Here" or just riffing on it such that I'd have to get permission to ever use it....

Not bad, but it would work even better as parody if you could work in Sondheim's original timeline perspective.  That's the part that everyone seems to miss in the parodies, but it's the part that made the original song so great.

Just IMO, of course.

I wasn't the one having "one of those days" at work today.  That fell to Jamie, our General Merchandise manager.

What with the 50th anniversary of Barbie, Mattel has issued a 50th Anniversary Barbie, sort of the modern Barbie wearing a skimpy bathing suit very similar to the original, and with the original's hooker make-up painted on her face.

We received a very limited number of the dolls, somthing like two dozen, three dozen at the most.  And Corporate had decided to sell the dolls at the original price of three dollars.  Limit one per customer.

There was only one way to prevent someone insisting on buying all the dolls, and that was to keep them all in the back.  The customer would have to go to the Customer Service Desk, and ask for one of the dolls.  Ed, our CS rep today, would pick up the phone and page Jamie, saying the simple code "Jamie, One!"  Jamie would get one of the dolls, and bring it to the customer.

First come, first served.  Right?

Well, Jamie was flooded with phone calls all day.  No, we can't hold one at the desk for you, it's first come, first served.  Yes, ma'am, I understand you have three granddaughters, but our limit is one per customer.

I suggested he tell those grandmothers that they'd just have to decide which granddaughter they loved most, but that the limit was still one per customer.  The way he rolled his eyes clearly said "Oh, if I only could get away with that!"

The good news was that we were sold out by noon.  All gone, too bad, buh-bye.  And our sister stores in Long Neck and Millsborough were sold out, too.

"They've got the dolls at WalMart and K-Mart.  They're selling them for $12 each."  Boy, did that comment get some dirty looks.

Like I said, Jamie was having one of those "one of those days" days.  He was so glad when his shift ended.

Simon wouldn't have as he's British.  Totally cool guy, got in trouble at St. James for having the audacity to preach against the Iraq war.  It was downhill from there (this was back in the ra-ra-Bushie era).

I'm not sure about Raggs.  I know she was one of the first women ordained to be a priest and has a certain reputation due to that.  In the small world department she had been the Chaplain at the Episcopalian parochial school I attended in Salt Lake City before she came up to Portland (obviously years after I attended).

Speaking of snow, the weirdest damn thing happened today.  I had to drive out to the theater where we'll be doing The Producers, for a final round of auditions.  My neighborhood was wet, as in rain.  As soon as I drove next to Lewis & Clark Law School, suddenly there was about six inches of snow on the ground!  And it was just in this one 2 mile or so corridor next to Tryon Creek State Park.  As soon as I got to Lake Oswego it was gone again.  I've never seen "micro-weather" like that before.  Absolutely no snow one second, turn a corner and there's six inches of it!

I have seen it in the summer where it is pouring in on spot and less than a mile away the sun is shining..

One thing I have noted about older films and dvds is that they may not be closed captioned and I noticed that about The Far Pavilions

Well that's any day here in Portland.  :)  What was weird here was the *amount* of snow--one place, nada.  The next spot over half a foot.

The closed captioning did show up for a hwile and then just quit.

oddly the converter box on the OLD TELLY and I mean old, is giving that one closed caption capability.

I spent the last 2.5 hours watching the 2nd half of the BBC 1983 production of Dickens' DOMBEY AND SON. I watched the first half last night and i enjoyed it very much. Lord, those Victorians were a mess and this one's about a man so obsessed with his young son as an heir to his fortune that he ignores his daughter who craves his affection. Excellent cast, most of whom I'd never seen before, with lots of travails, a great sense of the plight of women pimped by their mothers as trade, a good cry, and some eccentric characters before Dickens wraps it up.

I have always enjoyed the BBC victorian dramas. They are amazingly done. I love Cranford.

Watched another wonderful Bollywood movie! Now on my list of all time favorites...APRADHI KUAN?.

The film introduced Lillian to Hindi audiences. She couldn't act worth beans, but she has very big boobs, which I image is how she managed to get this role.

..and I think she is wearing one of Barbie's 1959 fasions.

I did get the last three episodes of JAG watched. Of course, the season ended on a cliffhanger, and the star had to quit the Navy to go rescue his lady (even though they've stubbornly resisted the attraction they obviously feel for one another).

Next, I watched the last episode on disc 3 of MOONLIGHT. This is the episode that ended the Corraline story arc. I was glad to see her go, but it did end with Mick finally eating food after 50 years, and even when I saw that the first time, I could almost taste all those wonderful looking things he was eating and enjoying so much.

Makes me a little sad, though, since there is only one disc left in the set, and then no more episodes of MOONLIGHT. Oh, if CBS had ONLY had more faith in the show catching on. One year away from the vampire rage of TWILIGHT and TRUE BLOOD.

Next, I took out the Blu-ray of THE UNIVERSE and watched the first episode. It was on the Sun, and was quite fascinating. I've always loved astronomy, but haven't kept up on reading about it for many years, so this offered so many facts about the Sun I either had forgotten or didn't know about at all.

Only disappointment was that the Blu-rays are presented in 1080i rather than 1080p. A small quibble and might not have made any difference in video quality, but why do this?

Next, I watched DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Some OK plots (a couple of surprises), but I wanted to slap Lynette and Tom silly for acting like five year olds.

Good Evening!

So... I believe I am officially brain dead right now.  Well, at the point where my brain has shut down - or should shut down.  I just came from a "brief" recording session which ended up lasting about four and a half hours. I was thinking, hoping that it would last only and hour.  Ah, well... And then it turned out we were doing two songs. And I also had to teach the backing vocals for both of them.  Oh, and I had to play too.  OY!  I was cringing during the playbacks listening to my feeble attempts at trying to sound "groovy" and "funky".  Thankfully, I think - and hope - that the tracks I recorded were mainly used as a "scratch track" for the vocals.  The recording engineer did "help me out" in a few places, and I do know that the composer/mix-downer will also be sweetening the track too.  In any case...

Whew!

DR JoseSPiano - you had more patience with that rude, selfish woman than I would have had.  Sorry about your jacket.

Thanks, DR DAW.  I'm just glad that I took my wallet, keys and ID out of my jacket pockets before I placed it in in the overheard bin.  However, I also "lost" a pair of 180s - those wrap-around earmuffs.  Thankfully, it does seem that Spring is most definitely in the air, and since I'm heading to Charleston, SC, on Wednesday for six weeks...

...Yes, I will be heading down to Charleston, SC, on Wednesday for about six weeks.  -Yes, six weeks.  I will be music directing and conducting a production of The Producers for Charleston Stage.  I am looking forward to working down there, but I'm not looking forward to all the STUFF I have to get done over the next two days.  Lots and lots of stuff!

*And after looking at the projected forecast and temps for Charleston over the next couple of weeks, I will definitely not need a heavy jacket.

I just read that the ratings for the season finale of BURN NOTICE on Thursday night broke its own record and will rank as the highest rated series on cable for the week.

As I said, if NBC had a brain in its head, it would make plans to run the series on the network next season and not on USA. Even on USA, it garnered those record ratings while airing a show opposite NEW episodes of ELEVENTH HOUR and ER on CBS and NBC.

TOmorrow I'll be workingf on the next Criterion Blu-ray release: THE 400 BLOWS. I love this movie, but I haven't seen it in quite a long time. I think there is a fair amount of bonus material, too, so I don't know how much prime time TV I'll get to watch tomorrow night, apart from '24,' that is, which is a must-see Monday night event.

Circuit City: I always saw their prices as higher than most of the other stores around here.  For Dora the Explorer: just out of interest I asked a mother and daughter what they thought, and both said they will switch to another show.  And both said Diego was much cooler anyway.

Dear Cillaliz,  Van Morrison brings back great memories of driving Pacific Coast Hwy during the summer vacations of high school.  Really good memories.  I will probably always like his music from those years.
And still do listed to his cd, Still on Top-The Greatest Hits.

Now, I must take a shower and get dressed (oh, I also did laundry last night :)) so that I can go to my sister's house.  We're all meeting there before we head up to Seattle and The Manhattan Transfer!

Have a good day, all! ;D

I got back from the concert and watched tonight's episode of "Brothers and Sisters."  Their plot really doth thicken!

Anyway, the concert was great!  They did about one hour and that was it.  It may not seem like a lot but they were very good.  For dinner, I had a Caesar salad with marinated organic chicken (sorry, no picture) and it was pretty good.  And the best part was that my sister said that it was my birthday present!  I don't have to pay her back.  Of course, my birthday isn't until May, so it was a very early present.  Fine with me. :D
