Time Warner is doing work - at MIDNIGHT to six in the morning - so it just took me twenty minutes to close the other topic and post the word of the day. Sickening. But they've credited me 1.53.

About a half hour ago, I was watching TV and noticed that Comcast had sent out a message (usually advertising some wrestling or boxing pay-per-view "event"), but this time it was saying something about a new channel becoming full time HD. Anyway, I went to check out the channel and came across "Valmont" with Colin Firth, Annette Benning and Meg Tilly (it's another version of "Dangerous Liaisons") on another channel. I noticed that the next movie after "Valmont" was "The Night They Raided Minsky's." Since I'd never seen this movie (and there's the new musical about Minsky heading to Broadway), I set my DVR to record it (even though it's pan and scan). I decided to check other shows on this channel and guess what...at 8:40 am, they're showing "The Winslow Boy," a 1999 movie version of one of the two possible plays that BK was told to read by the radio DJ. What a coinkydink! I set my DVR to record that also. ;D

Good morning, all! The alarm went off around 5 am, and I'm bathed and ready to see the doctor. I figure around 6:45 I'll look for a taxi to East 95th Street and get this shebang going. Mr Skip Kennon, talented composer and chef par excellence will pick me up around 9 am, and I should be home by 9:30 or 10 at the latest. I'm thinking about taking a peanut butter sandwich with me so as soon as I'm out of my coma I can eat something. I am starving!

Also thanks to DR JRand for the "I Think She Needs Me" song. It did skip, but I just had to slam my hand against the PC a couple of times to get it to stop.
I also checked my copy of ILYA DARLING and it is identical to DR JRand's. What surprised me was the stark cover art--I remembered it as being something more busy with a sketch of a Greek shoreline in the background behind Melina. The memory does play tricks, don't it?

The wet sand monster waited patiently underneath the clammy, damp surface, and sure enough, this pretty lady came dancing by and stuck her toe right in his mouth. All he had to do was slurp her down like so much spaghetti. Yummers!
Of course, the fabric she was wearing wasn't quite so tasty, so he spat it back out again, evidence that something had happened on the beach, but exactly what no one ever knew.

Last night's DWTS was interesting. Although i did not realize the 2 replacements were supposed to be surprises.
I'm not sure who my favorite is. But i was very impressed with the guy from the Sex & The City movie. He was very good. Although cheryl is not my fav.
I was also very impressed with Steve W. Wow. I think because he can be so smart he memorizes the steps very well. He was much better than i thought he would be.
Melissa was very good. I think she will be a standout for sure. I liked steve o and lacey. And chuck and julianne. Should be interesting! I was quite disappointed in the first 3!

I'm back! It all went very quickly and I was ready to go home by 8:30. I liked Dr Finkelstein and his crew very much. I then ate my peanut butter sandwich and waited for my escort home. My dear friend Skip arrived about 9, got be safely back here, and I've sent him on his way with the Christmas gift I've been holding for him and DR FJL.
I think it's time for a bit of food.

As I mentioned last night, my work project today is the CEntennial Collection edition of TO CATCH A THIEF. I'm not quite sure why Paramount is mastering these releases in high definition but only releasing them (for now) in standard DVD. WHy they don't take a chance and release one, say, SUNSET BOULEVARD on Blu-ray, I'm not quite sure.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to spending the afternoon with Cary, Grace, and Mr. Hitchcock. (Dr. Drew Casper will also be along for the ride!)

I remember when I began producing theater music on CD in 1993 - there was virtually almost nothing coming out from anyone - not from the majors, not from the minors, and almost nothing from singers themselves. Within two years, after seeing what we were doing and watching our sales, virtually everyone, majors and minors, were back into it and, as they always do, not only back into it but trying to BEAT everyone in terms of volume. And then every singer got into it, doing their own releases or releases through smaller labels. It was really interesting to watch. And then after we created a really interesting business model with my former label, and that model was really successful, two labels sprouted up using the exact same model. And the more the merrier say I.

Almost time to shower and be on my way. It's hard to know how much time to allow - don't want to be late, need to park, and traffic could be awful or could be light.

When I was in 8th or 9th grade I wrote to Albert Glasser, film composer for ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE and so many other B films of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I told him how much I loved his music and he kindly gifted me with recordings of several of his scores....I was in heaven. We kept up a correspondence for a few years after. What a great guy.
A few years ago I bumped into a lady who just happened to be Albert Glasser's niece. It turns out she has his recordings now that he has passed on. I was hoping that BK could do something with them, but alas it was not to be due to some rights issues, evidently........although, BK, if you were to check into his earlier film scores for PRC and Monogram films ( I think MONSTER MAKER was one of his)...well, most of that stuff is in public domain now.

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm almost done packing for my trip to Charleston. After sleeping in - well, getting a full eight hours of sleep - I went ahead and started pulling clothes from my closet and dresser. They are all laid out on my bed, and in a little while I shall place them in my luggage - with some "editing" along the way. However, it feels like I under-packed - which means that I've packed "just right".

But in college, I wrote to Ned Rorem, Lucas Foss, and Stephen Sondheim, and received cordial replies from all three.

Ned Rorem was composer in resident at the University of Utah when I was a kid.

Rorem also dedicated one of his pieces to this completely weird guy I met years later in Portland when I was on a temporary assignment. The guy was a follower of Urantia and had a big commune-type house in Alameda, a rather tony neighborhood in PDX, full of kids he had adopted. He had taken some sort of "Urantian" name like Jamil or Jaleem or something like that.

As JR knows, I managed to track down Frances Farmer's sister Edith, who had actually lived most of her adult life in Portland, but had moved to the tiny town of Sequim, WA by the time I found her. We exchanged a series of interesting letters and phone calls that set me out on my obsessive compulsive journey to figure out what really happened to her famous sister.

Because of my father's prominence, I was also able to get personally signed letters and photos of a number of famous politicians and soldiers, including Richard Nixon, former WA senator Henry Jackson, former WA governor Daniel Evans, Gen. Westmoreland, and, via Westmoreland, Bob and Dolores Hope (I have a picture of me holding lemons from the Hopes' lemon tree, underneath which I inscribed a bit of the Trini Lopez tune, LOL).

I was shallow. I wrote to Donny Osmond when I was 12. I got a reply from his fan club inviting me to send money to join.
I've written two performers:
In 1963, I wrote Philip Alford a fan letter and told him how much I enjoyed "To Kill A Mockingbird." I received, in reply, a school photo he autographed.
A year later, I wrote to Peter O'Toole and told him I thought he was the best actor I'd ever seen. I asked for nothing but got back a signed photo of him (3 X 4) as T. E. Lawrence in uniform.
I wish I had written to more people back then, especially film composers (why I never wrote any of them is a HUGE mystery to me now). I was a bit on the shy side back then (No! Don't argue! Truly, I was!) and didn't figure anything I had to say about them would be any more remarkable than anything anyone else had probably already said..

At least my clothes have been placed in my luggage. I will probably edit a few of them items over the next 24 hours, but the major part of the work is done. Since I'll be in Charleston for six weeks, I'll just buy my toiletries when I get down there. Now all I have to do is pack my carry-on, and sort through some of the mail and papers on my desk to make sure that I don't leave anything important behind.
*And since it's a relatively "slow" TV night for me, I should have plenty of time to take care of some cleaning and organizing tonight too. -At least that's the plan for now. ;)

Unless I'm taking the entire suit, I wear it. And if I am taking the entire suit, depending on the situation of arrival, event, etc. I may wear the suit (not my favorite thing to do on a plane).

Alas, a garment bag would count as one of my carry-on's, so...
I also have to take my tux with me, so... I tried the "inside-out, tuck the shoulder in the other shoulder" folding method, but it didn't seem to work. My large bag does have a "suiter" in it, so I used that. And once I get to Charleston, I can just use one of the steamers in the costume shop to take care of any wrinkles, or just hang it in the bathroom while I take a shower and let the steam do it's magic.

Back from LACC. I spoke to the beginning semester students, a really nice group of folks, several of whom really want to do musicals. I had a great time - they were smart, asked good questions, and it was fun. I heard back from Mr. Sondheim who told me he only has lyric sketches, no music. I've asked him to elaborate on whether the song was actually used in the show and if he'd give me a little history. We'll see if he does.

I, like Bruce, have many kindness of strangers stories. People without whom one's career might have gone in an entirely different direction or not happened at all. In 1980, I went to an open call at the Ahmanson Theatre for a play called THE CRUCIFER OF BLOOD that was to be directed by its author, Paul Giovanni. It was a Sherlock Holmes play, with Charlton Heston playing Holmes and Jeremy Brett,Watson.
I was called back several times. Mr. Giovanni took me out in the hall at one point and said to me, "Of the three hundred people you see at an open call, only about 70-80 have any talent and only a handful stand out. But what none of those folks who come out here with their battered suitcases full of dreams understand is, nobody cares. You have to make them care. I just want you to know you're one of those who stand out and I care. I'm going to do my damnest to get you in this show." Now part of that decision was Mr. Heston's, who was more than willing to work with young talent. True to his word, Mr. Giovanni got me in the show. I and one other actor were told we were the first actors to break the open call at the Ahmanson and ever get cast from it. All during the run, Jeremy Brett was kind and encouraging to me and we spoke often after the show closed and even met in London for dinner when our own respective Sherlock Holmes films were competing with each other.
There are many, many others...often teachers or professors or behind-the-scenes people who kept you going, inspired you, and steered you in the right direction when you needed it. These are the people who should be thanked at Awards Shows.

DR Elmore - if resting is what you feel like doing, that's what you should do. I'm glad your procedure went so well, but I think the medical folks are too glib about how great you're supposed to feel once it's over. Most of them are too young to have been through it themselves.

Great news, DR Vixmom! The best advice I ever received about going back to work part-time after medical leave was to go in for the second half of the day. That way, you're not tempted to stay all day before you're really up to it.

I watched CASTLE while I ate lunch. I was a bit turned off by the overdone character set-ups for Castle showing him to be the overage frat boy whose daughter is more mature than he is. I caught on very quickly and didn't need such an over elaborate build-up. Once the case got going, it was a fun crime investigation. I don't think Castle is quite as interesting a character as Jane on THE MENTALIST (the tones of the shows are very similar), but overall I enjoyed the episode and will continue watching.

Next I watched TO CATCH A THIEF. Always an enjoyable film, very frothy and light despite its darker underbelly. The transfer is gorgeous, Technicolor looking very lush and sharpness terrific for DVD. And the image is certainly the cleanest I've ever seen the film look, too.
All those striped shirts and sweaters that Cary and Brigitte wear in the first half of the movie used to play havoc with my TV, but except for just a little moiré, they're very solid now. On Blu-ray, there likely wouldn't be the least bit of pattern artifacts.

This new release of TO CATCH A THIEF is one that bk would best stay far away from. Dr. Drew Casper not only contributes the gushing audio commentary, but the first bonus feature I watched was a Q&A session he moderated in November 2008 with Hitchcock's daughter and one of his granddaughters answering questions from the audience about him.

I didn't have time yet to watch today's AS THE WORLD TURNS, but I forgot to mention last night that I did watch yesterday's, and the boys weren't there nor were they in the previews for today. So I'm guessing later today I'll be zooming through today's show.

The Blu-ray of BOLT arrived around 3 p.m. this afternoon (I was already listening to Dr. Drew Casper when it arrived), so that will be my work project for tomorrow. It comes out a week from today whereas TO CATCH A THIEF doesn't come out until March 24th, but since I had already started it, I'll finish it.

I watched CASTLE while I ate lunch. I was a bit turned off by the overdone character set-ups for Castle showing him to be the overage frat boy whose daughter is more mature than he is. I caught on very quickly and didn't need such an over elaborate build-up. Once the case got going, it was a fun crime investigation. I don't think Castle is quite as interesting a character as Jane on THE MENTALIST (the tones of the shows are very similar), but overall I enjoyed the episode and will continue watching.
We watched last night, and now der B is watching it again!
The two leads are interesting, his family has potential. The weak points as far as characters right now are her two partners and her boss - not much character built in there yet. The medical examiner sparked in her two scenes, though.
Did you catch who the other poker players were? Talk about good cameo placement!

I'm glad to hear the color is better, because that one had a horrid and really overdone green tint in many scenes - the outcry about it was heard, however, and I believe it's been corrected for this release. That said, the original DVD, while not very good, had excellent color, and I'm hoping this is at least as good as that.

No, I didn't buy the last special edition (it came out before I was named the Paramount reviewer, so I didn't get to do it.) I like TO CATCH A THIEF, but it's not a Hitchcock I return to nearly as often as, say, VERTIGO, REAR WINDOW, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, or even STAGE FRIGHT. So I was content with the original release.
The green is still pretty present in those scenes in the new transfer.

Re A Time For Singing - it's been virtually impossible for anyone to get into that catalog save for one person. However, today I did that person a huge favor and he just walked me in there, and I have formally put in a request for that title - it will take about six weeks for them to figure out all the legalities (they move slowly and need to ascertain that they have all the rights in the recording and have the right to license - I think they'll find that they do) - so that is now a real possibility. Hoping others pipe in on House of Flowers.

The 1968 Revival that UA recorded is not the same show as the Broadway version.

There is a musical I know nothing about except for that it was based on How Green Was My Valley and there are several names (at least to me) that are notablein the cast: Tessie O'Shea, Shani Wallis, Laurence Naismith, Elizabeth Hubbard and GEORGE HEARN!!
As far as I know, none of the songs were ever recorded other than the cast album.
It was released by Warner Bros.

I've never heard the 1968 revival, but I sure do love the OBC! it seems to me the problem, BK is in advertising the Kritzerland catalog. It's sad there are no longer magazines like THEATRE WEEK or SHOW MUSIC, and I would think Peter Filichia and Steve Suskin need to get review copies to write them up on their sites. I don't even know if Max Preeo, or whoever does the Upcoming Releases for TalkinBroadway.com, has ever listed any Kritzerland titles there. I find a lot of books and things there that interest me and I order them as soon as they're announced.

It was Off-Broadway. I used to see the actress who played the Diahan Carroll role in the Drama Book Shop. Her name as Yolanda Bavan(?). I had a copy of the vocal selections from that production.

and I'm back. The Vixter asked me to help her run a few errands after school so I took her out to the stores. Tomorrow is her best friends's birthday so she had stopped at the supermarket bakery on her way home yesterday and ordered a birthday cake which she will pick up tomorrow monring bring in to school. She and her best friend and another girl who is part of their group all have the same homeroom and first period class - chorus. So she got a nice big cake so everyone could have a small piece.
This afternoon we went to the dollar store to buy paperplates and plastic forks and candles and a cheap cake server (in case in doesn't come home - I didn't want to give her mine!)

Then we went up to Kohl's to buy her a new white blouse. She was selected to be in the All County Chorus this coming weeked and we just realized that she outgrew her white turtleneck. Her black dress slacks are still fine thank goodness. I was lucky we were able to find a blouse on the discount rack for 50% off the price so it was $15 and then when we checked out they were running a promotion where they let you pick a scratch off card for additional savings - I got another 20% off so we picked up a $30 dress blouse for $12.

Ginny - that sounds like a good idea going in for the second half of the day but I already committed to going in from 9 am until 1 PM. If I feel up to it I will stay until 2 .
That time of the afternoon there will be very little traffic and I will probably be home in less than 20 minutes.
I will be getting home around the same time as the Vixter so that will nice and I will have time for a nap before dinner if I need one.

Back from the audio place. The good news is that both Po, Po, Po and Birthday Song are on the tapes and the tapes are in GREAT shape. So, as long as I get permission from MGM to include them (hoping that's not a prob, but you never know with these big corps), I shall. Po, Po, Po is terrific AND it's the bloody opening number of the show! That's a major plus. Birthday Song is an amusing one-minute throw-away number, but fun. There are also two reels of "outtakes" - but the splices were falling apart so I'm not sure what those are and I'm not spending the money to find out (not only the transfer cost, but the repairing the splices cost) - what I "think" they are are sections of number included on the LP that were edited out for time reasons, although, that said, how there could be forty-something minutes of edits is anyone's guess. Even if I wanted to transfer and find out, then there's the question of where they go - I don't know this score well at all and I would hate to try and guess where this edited stuff went - it would also require a two CD set, which I'm not willing to do. If money were no expense, I'd remix the entire album from scratch - the sound on the LP is very washy, maybe one of the most heavily reverbed albums I've ever heard, very much like Mitch Miller's Columbia stuff. Interestingly, the four-track session masters have reverb recorded ON them, but it's not so washy - for the LP it sounds like they added reverb to the recorded reverb (normally you would never record reverb - it's added in the mix). So, the four-tracks remixed would sound amazing, but given the sales of Anya, I'm not going down that road.

Interestingly, the audio place is right across the hall from the office of Film Score Monthly's Lukas Kendall, and I got a sneak peek at all their new titles - one of them, which is at the pressing plant, will blow readers of this site right off the face of the planet - I cannot tell you how excited I am - probably my biggest holy grail, soundtrack-wise, and it's a two CD set.

I like Kohls. It is one of few places that I can find pants with long inseams.
They do have good sales and clearance racks. I have had spotty luck with Herbergers and a couple of other chains. I stay out of Macy's. Too expensive for my budget. I also like Target.

I guess my stories of stranger kindness are many an varied but some of the ones that have been most wonderful have been from teh many international students There have been several that have become friends and have allowed me to ask questions and some of them quite stupid perhaps from their perspective but not to me. They gave me the opportunity to learn about their culture and perhaps come to some understanding. Through these freindships, I have learned a lot about India, Sri Lanka and the Middle East. Several of the students I have crossed paths with have become very dear freinds.
Another stranger encounter was a one time response I recieved on a query I posted on a genealogy board concerning German research. Amazingly one day about three years after I posted a request, I received an email filed with information from a book a person had of two lines that were dead ends. The information opened up a lot of new opportunities for research and learning.

I watched CASTLE while I ate lunch. I was a bit turned off by the overdone character set-ups for Castle showing him to be the overage frat boy whose daughter is more mature than he is. I caught on very quickly and didn't need such an over elaborate build-up. Once the case got going, it was a fun crime investigation. I don't think Castle is quite as interesting a character as Jane on THE MENTALIST (the tones of the shows are very similar), but overall I enjoyed the episode and will continue watching.
Mr. Fillion could sit in a chair doing nothing for an hour, and I would still watch him on TV.
Preferably in his underwear............. or not!

Watched CASTLE and enjoyed it very much. Nathan Fillion is just such a charming actor and I loved Susan Sullivan as his mom and also the girl who plays his daughter. I will tune in again.

DR Jose, i only got to the first 3 singers on Idol so far.
But usually people say that it is best to be last (those people seem to get a lot of votes). But the first 3 singers tonight (to me) are 3 of the 4 strongest (lil, danny, scott).
Btw, there is supposed to be a huge announcement/twist revealed tonight or tomorrow. It wasn't the lame thing simon said in the first minute was it?

I liked it: very bleak - what a sad plot! - and very theatrical with an excellent cast, especially Bob Peck, Alan Bates, and Richard E Grant. Dilys Lay, who plays the housekeeper Mrs Sparsit, was the original Dulcie of "It's Never Too Late to Fall In Love" in the OBC of THE BOY FRIEND with Julie Andrews. Se died recently. I've not seen the 1977 version and now I want to. I guess MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT will be the next Dickens I watch.

It's a glorious Spring evening with so many trees and flowers blooming all illuminated by an almost full moon.
Grapefruit blossoms smell differnt from lemon blossoms.
Lemon blossoms smell different from orange blossoms.
Lime blossoms smell different from orange bloosoms.
They are all slightly different and wondrous in their own ways. Most people never bother to notice.
And schnozberries smell like schnozberries.

Nursie, if you read all the comments in the IMDB reviews, you'd see that some really liked the Alan Bates adaptation. It's only 2 hrs long, as oppoed to the 1977 version, so it's much abridged, but i found it quite good. Rent it. Or rent the DOMBEY AND SON, which was quite good.

Susan sure can't sing nor can she keep time to the music (or at least her character couldn't.) She was always a few measures behind the pianist singing "I Can't Say No."
I want to reiterate that I enjoyed CASTLE; I just found the first segment establishing his character a bit too overblown.

I watched the remaining bonus features on TO CATCH A THIEF. Some were ports from previous releases and some were new. None were particularly long, however, so it didn't take too long to get through them.

Next, I watched the gay espionage film KISS ME DEADLY. Not as entertaining as the Donald Stratchey mystery series, it was still fine for a low budget spy flick. In order to compete with the BOURNE movies et al, it'd need a lot more action, but I wouldn't be against a series of these spy films if here! wants to finance them.

Then I watched IDOL, skimming though all the filler and just watching the performances. They certainly front-loaded the show. The first four vocalists were (along with Adam) the best in the competition.
I found all four of the wild card pics the weakest performers this week. I can't see any of them hanging around for very long.

The kindness of strangers?
When I first came to Los Angeles back in the early 1960s, and was trying to figure out how to break into show biz, I took a stroll up the Sunset Strip and, for a reason that I cannot for my life remember, walked into an agent's office.
His was a real old timer named Leon Lance. He invited me in and, for about 15 minutes, talked to me about the realities of Hollywood. I never saw the man again, but I've never forgotten that kindness.

I meant to mention earlier that CASTLE finished 2nd in the 10 p.m. timeslot last night after CSI: MIAMI and ahead of MEDIUM.
However, CASTLE had the advantage of a HUGE audience lead-in from DANCING WITH THE STARS while MEDIUM had HEROES for a lead-in (which finished fourth at 9 p.m.) While scoring 11 million viewers, CASTLE lost about 50% of the DANCING WITH THE STARS audience. It needs to have a better retention than that if it's to survive.
Funny, but MEDIUM is now NBC's highest rated show on Monday night.

Dear Kerry, I always stop to notice the scents of nature. Anything you buy in a flower shop or even most nursery's have no scent at all. (Well here in the city anyway) Sometimes I wonder if the new generations of humans will get a chance to remember what nature used to be. Everyone seems to want their world to be allergy free, germ free, gluten free, etc.etc.etc. Just my opinion.

The kindness of strangers: during high school the school bus dropped us off at my current boyfriends house at 3:30, his father would be waiting for us, take both of us to his place business. I worked in the showroom on La Cienega, it was wholesale to the trade only imports from Italy, Spain, England. I wrote all the orders from the showroom floor. I got the chance to have conversations on a causal basis with wonderful people like, William Holden, Gene Roddenbury, (after all this time it's hard for me to remember the spelling of names without looking them up) sports figures , singers. And not one of them ever treated me like I was just 17 and 18 years old, they always treated me with the same respect to anyone of their own generation. Now I always remember that at work.

I concur. Fillion is very charming...and he makes Thomas Jane in "The Mentalist" seem overwritten and less-than-realistic to me. I really liked this show. It was smart, sassy, had a lot of zip, wasted NO time and left me wanting more. It was one of the fastest "hours" I've spent in a long time.
Love the chemistry of the two stars.
