I did forget to mention one thing about doing Forget-Me-Not Lane - it took place during WWII and at one point we were doing some kind of "show" - there was a girl on roller skates (Jill Cook) and we were singing There'll Always Be An England and it was all very busy.  In this sequence, I had to draw a picture of Churchill.  I cannot draw at all, of course, and I thought - good one, never happen.  But they had a pre-sketched paper with a very light outline that I was to follow with a heavy crayon (I actually think it was a Marksalot made to look like a crayon or something).  I had a VERY short time to do this drawing.  The first few times I tried I came nowhere near doing it in time.  It was really hard - a lot of lines.  Over the course of a day or two, I tried different starting places and I finally found the best place to start that would give me the best flow - I figured out the exact route to take, line-wise.  I finally got it down to where I finished just in time, but it was a real race.  By the time we opened I was finishing with time to spare and I never once missed and by opening night not only was I finishing ahead of time, I even had time to sign the drawing "Ivor."

I couldn't believe it when I got my copy of the DVD - first I couldn't believe they put it out at all, and second that they put a photo on the cover in which I appeared.

And the word of the day is: FECKLESS!
Annabelle was thrilled to be cast in the new play, even though it was a smallish part.  She thought the others in the cast were fascinating people, and the story, about a housefull of people who band together to combat the apathy and aimless world around them, struck a nerve with her.  She even loved the title - FECKLESS-Me-Not Lane!

(Sorry, BK, but I couldn't resist.   ::)   ;D   :-*)

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm about to meet the whole company for the first time.  Well, at least the entire ensemble.  It promises to be an interesting and entertaining morning.

*And since there is so much unison singing for the ensemble (throughout the show in general), it should be a fast morning too.

Tomorrow morning I do not have rehearsal, nor do I have anything else scheduled for the morning.  Alas, the rain is finally supposed to move in tonight, so it won't be a good day for sight-seeing.  However, it should be a good morning for sleeping in a bit, listening to NPR, and doing some reading.

(Second try - AOL kicked me off the first time, and I couldn't save what I wrote)

TOD:

Edmund White's States of Desire.

Not quite thirty years ago, after I'd returned to Los Angeles with my physical wounds healed from that queer-bashing incident, I was reading White's (no relation) travelogue, and came to the section on Florida.  White talked about a survey that was taken shortly after Anita Bryant's Save the Children campaign toppled the pro-gay legislation in Dade County.  What the surveyers had found was that the vast majority of voters who had voted for the repeal could not identify anyone they knew as gay.  Those few who could play spot-a-homo and win could only do so by pointing out their hairdresser, and maybe a florist.  No one knew about Catholic priests, apparently.

And it occured to me, we're invisible.  "They" can't spot us.  They don't have a clue as to who we are.  Oh, they can still arrest us.  They can fire us.  They can deny us an apartment.  They can blast at us from their pulpits.  They can even beat us to a pulp, break our bodies.  But they can't spot us, because we're invisible.

Our very invisibility was part of the problem.  How could they ever know who we are, as people, if we don't let them know?

And then I looked at myself.  I certainly couldn't rely on anyone else to do the job.  Everyone else I knew was as invisible as I was.  We were cowering in the supposed safety of our invisibility, and it wasn't working.  Hadn't I just spent months with my shoulder in a cast, because of that damned faulty invisibility?

No one else was going to represent me.  I had to be that person others could point to and say, "Yes, I know that guy."

Shortly after this revelation, the opportunity struck.  The office I worked at, it was announced, was being merged with another office, for efficiency and for larger digs, and the two offices would now be under one roof, and that roof was going to be in... Orange County.

*gulp*

I came out of the closet before we made the move.  I've never regretted that decision.  And yes, I became "that guy," the one people could come up to and say "Uh, do you mind if I ask you a personal question?"  And that personal question would never have anything to do with me, personally.  It always had something to do with being gay.  They now knew someone, who wasn't a hairdresser or florist.  They knew my name.

Edmund White did that, changed my life, purely by power of suggestion, by writing something and letting me think.

Good morning, all! I'm a bit weepy at the moment, caught up in the 70s music I'm listening to and BK's very nostalgic and wonderful notes.  These two experiences prompt me to two thoughts: BK, it's time to write a bona fide autobiography of some sort and a lot of the morons writing popular song today have neither the gift for imagery nor melody the pop writers did 30 yeas ago.

I slept quite late this morning: I had the hardest time putting down the Suskin book. I didn't turn out the lights until I had finished reading the biographical sections on the 12 major orchestrators. Other names of ghosts used by Russell Bennett ring a loud bell: Rbert Noeltner's name appears inside a ton of published vocal scores as the man who made the piano reductions for publications from the orchestrator's full scores for a show and Joe Glover, who shared orchestartion credit with Bennett on A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, was the writer of one of my beginning piano methods.

Today, mostly Loesser: finish the last two parts and begin the two days of writing up all of my notes. I'd like to deliver the score on Monday morning.

TOD: too many books have shaped or added to my dementia. I wouldn't know which one to credit - or blame - for the person I am today emotionally and intellectually. Let me mention the few I can think of that might have been the most influential:
  ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN
  CATCH-22
  PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
  THE THREE MUSKETEERS
  CHARLEY WEAVER'S LETTERS TO MOMMA
  THE ILIAD
  THE ODYSSEY
  CHARLOTTE'S WEB

I had the same problem with the copy I rented from Netflix. Sent it back, second copy had the same problem. DR MATTH and I had numerous emails about it and concluded it was a compatibility problem with my DVD player.  A friend made a copy for me that's better, but still not perfect. A shame, too, because it's such a lovely performance from BK.

I've decided to take the day off. I have a DVR full of shows, a dreary day outside which means I'll be inside for all of it, and so I'd like to get some of those shows watched and erased. Tonight I plan to watch DVDs and Blu-rays and just enjoy the day, the first day I've been able to do that in weeks.

I have three Criterion discs waiting to be reviewed, but two of them don't come out until March 31st, so I have the time. And unlike the last couple of weeks, I'm not expecting any major Disney release on Blu-ray this week either, so the week should be relatively easy.

I went to Carnegie Tech(Carnegie Mellon) with Joyce Womack who married Michael Ebert and became Joyce Ebert. She later married Arvin Brown.

Ah, great minds, Larry and I had the same thought reading BK's wonderful notes today:  Time for the autobiography.  I too have the DVD of Forget-Me-Not Lane and it's wonderful!  And BK's wonderful in it!

Life-changing books?  Probably far-too many that I would say were influential in my life and career.

THE RETURN OF TARZAN...the first Tarzan book I ever read and the book that probably started my book-collecting mania.  There are now over five thousand books in the collection.

SHE...by H. Rider Haggard.  My favourite book of all time.  I have over thirty variant editions including two firsts.  Haggard stirs deep waters and spills his sub-conscious all over the page.

GOODNIGHT, SWEET PRINCE...Gene Fowler's bio of John Barrymore

CYRANO DE BERGERAC

RICHARD III...Paul Murray Kendall's bio of the much-maligned king.

A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN THEATRE...probably stoked my imagination more about the theatre than anything.

THE GREEN MAN...by Henry Treece...dark, bleak interpetation of the Amleth or Hamlet myth with unique characterizations of Arthur and Beowulf.

Just a few...

I can't think of any book that "changed my life," but there was a movie that definitely did.

FIELD OF DREAMS

I was seriously thinking about quitting "the business" at the time, but then I heard the Burt Lancaster character talk about putting your dreams aside to do something else, figuring you'll come back to them...but you never do.

I decided not to quit, and soon after that, I made my first screenplay sale.

I guess the 1980s was a rough time for everybody.

And we're off and running!

After about an hour or so of paperwork and meeting and greeting, I started my first vocal rehearsal.  And about an hour later, I had gone through the first two numbers.  Almost.  I have a few harmony passages to teach after the lunch break, and then we put the numbers on their feet.

Gottfried was a really peculiar man and I admired his books and criticism so much I made an effort to like the egocentric sonofabitch as well. Didn't work.

In my teen years, Rand and Nietzsche changed my life, I guess.

When I was older the debunked book by the lying author about Frances Farmer set me out on a course of action which changed my life.

I watched GHOST WHISPERER while I ate lunch (the SD version since it was delayed by ACC basketball.) I was really enjoying the way the Melinda-Sam relationship was going, but with the breakdown of that last week, I understand why the writers felt they had to do something rather drastic. I did find it very emotional; I just wish I could have seen it in HD.

Next I watched Thursday night's SUPERNATURAL (again in SD since the local CW channel was carrying an NBA basketball game.) Very good episode, quite chilling what's going on with Sam on the show. And Jensen Ackles (Dean) had some more showcase moments for his character that he handled very well.

I also watched Thursday night's THE OFFICE, and I had some good laughs. Not the best the show has ever been, but I enjoyed it more than last week's episode.

Tonight I'm going to watch ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST on Blu-ray. I haven't seen the movie in decades, and gave away my SD version of the movie when I started rewatching it a few months ago and realized it wasn't an anamorphic transfer.

Haven't decided yet what else I'll watch.

And later tonight, I'm going to see a local production of "Lysistrata (http://www.buyolympia.com/events/?details=386)."  It's a new adaptation by a woman who lives here in Olympia.  It should be quite interesting. ;)

Having gotten up earlier than I have any day since Dec. 19, I had to take a nap when I got home.  Tomorrow will be an even earlier call, because Richard and I need to be on the road to Lima by 7am for him to conduct morning prayer at 10.

I believe the topic of the day is a favorite book..   I just have a story.

I was never much of a reader, when I came to this country I did not speak a word of English.  In those days when you went to school there was no bilingual education. I failed English every year till the 5th grade (and kids can be quite mean, so I just kept to myself). Even though I lived with my sister and her GI husband, I was still a German.

Then I moved to California, and no one even asked where I was from.  I become like everyone else.
Blended and generic.

Along comes my then boyfriend's older brother and his college friends, (one of which I would marry 20 years later) and at a party one night they asked what do you read, I said I don't.   Before I left that night to go home, I had a armfull of paperback books, and was told I could not come back till I read them all.
I did read them all, and still keep in contact with most of the guys and their families.

Went to see my hairdresser this morning (also my neighbor), he always seems to schedule as many people as he possibly can into the same few hours.  Some of his clients have been going to him for 40 years.  He was with Rene Russo when she was discovered as a model, walking in Hollywood (true story).
And Mr. Blackwell listed him as one of the hairdressers to the stars.  It's always great fun to be there.

I don't quite seem to fit in, he just took me under his wings.

My father read ARROWSMITH & decided to be a physician.  That was truly a life changing book.

For me countless books have exposed me to new ideas or changed me in subtle ways.

I suppose if I must name a single book it would be LE MISERABLE.  I was 14 when first I learned Jean Valjean was thrown into prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family.  From that moment on I barely put the book down until I had finished reading it.  I'm sure prior to this I had been aware of injustices in the world, after all I knew people who had been in concentration camps.  Granted I had not yet discovered Dickens, however I wasn't reading children's books either.   Suddenly I developed a new depth of understanding & awareness of suffering outside of my own world.

Dear Jane,   I came here with my father( who was in his 20's and had plans other than taking care of a 5 year old), who dropped me off at my sisters (same mother different father) in St. Louis. I still don't know exactly why I ended up in America, other than I was sponsored by someone I did not meet till I came to California in 1965.  In 1965 my father picked me up at my sisters, then picked up my mother at the airport (who I had not seen in all those years) and the 3 of us came to LA.  She stayed 2 weeks and went back to Berlin.

I know every family has issues they do not talk about, my family does not tell the truth about anything, quit asking a long time ago.

DR Sam which was more difficult, being dropped off at your sister's or taken away from her?

My family was filled with secrets, mostly to hide the fact my mother was an alcoholic.  There were other secrets our parents told us separately, most of which we would have preferred not to know.  Gradually my brother & I discovered we had been keeping many of the same secrets-lol.  We opened up to them after our father & sister passed away.  I tell you it was a big relief even though some of them were painful.

Good Evening!

Well... Since the rain continued to hold off, I went ahead and decided to head back to downtown Charleston to some more exploring.  I managed to find a place to park on King Street, and then I walked... And walked... And walked... -And that's how I found out that downtown Charleston's "grid" is not a true grid, not square.  I didn't get lost or lost track of where I was, I just didn't expect some of the blocks to "get" so long once you depending upon which part of town you were in.  But I had a nice walk.

I did stop into the Charleston Candy Kitchen, which, alas, wasn't anything too special.  It's part of line of "Candy Kitchens".  However, they do - and were - making taffy, fudge and pralines on the premises.  That part was OK.  It was the giant barrels filled with Dubble-Bubble, Hershey Kisses and Jolly Ranchers that lent an air on inauthenticity to the place.

I also came a cross a neat little gelato place.  Well, I original saw three sailors in their dress whites sitting in the place... Then I realized it was a gelateria. ;)  That was near the campus of the College of Charleston which is centered around a great old Georgian style building.  I'll definitely have to head back there on a sunny day to take lots and lots of pictures.

*It's just too bad "The Reader" has already been taken as a title.  ;)

Time for to eat some dinner...bought me some fried chicken at Wal-mart.

Does your Wal-Mart have the Deep-Fried Corn on the Cob?  I remember seeing that a couple of years ago at the Wal-Mart in Winchester, VA.

And, yes, I tried it.

And, yes, it was good.

Okay, before I get to the sad tale of woe, may I just say I am rather shocked that at seven-fifteen we are on page five?  I don't know what universe people are currently residing in but it's not one I care for and I really would recommend a frenzy or five before everyone WUSSBURGERS or I'm not going to be happy and I'm already not happy and haven't BEEN happy in certain ways since one-twenty this afternoon.  I mean, if no one is around anyway, then the problem I've been having is inconsequential and I shouldn't worry about it and maybe I'll just shut the topic and we'll open it up in the morning, which is, perhaps, when I'll actually be able to get online from home.  Right now, I'm at Panera.  Here's why:

After doing the long jog I went directly to the editing room.  I did the handful of fixes, built the main and end titles, and the came home.  I got home at one-twenty.  I was about to go to this here site when I noticed that the cable modem lights were not blinking correctly and I knew that Time Warner was once again down.  I thought for a moment that maybe it had just lost signal, so I did what they always suggest (even thought the Airport/Time Machine was a solid green) - I unplugged the modem's power, waited a minute, then plugged it back in.  It was immediately clear that Time Warner was down, because now not only were the lights blinking erratically, but the Airport/Time Machine was now blinking amber, which means it wasn't getting any signal.

And speaking of deep-fried...

For one of my side dishes earlier at Melvin's BBQ, I had one(!) of their Golden Onion Rings.  -A full order of five onion rings runs $5.00, but you could get one as a side dish if you ordered a platter.  Well... It turns out one was enough - practically, more than enough.

I had read some reviews, and some people said that the onion rings at Melvin's could almost be dessert. -But then there was no further description of just why an onion ring could possibly qualify as a dessert.  As it turns out, the onion ring was more like an onion fritter, or an onion donut.  One ring of onion is batter(!) coated(!!!!) and then fried.  It really did look like a donut.  In fact, I saw some people using a knife and fork to eat them, and then when I tried to eat mine, I realized that a knife and work was a practical way to eat them.

I truly don't think I could ever eat a full order of five of those things.  And, frankly, the one was OK, but it's definitely not something I'd immediately think of ordering the next time I end up there.  Oh, and the cornbread was also dessert-like too.  They use fine-ground cornmeal, and it's "seasoned" with a generous dash or two or three of sugar.  It was almost sweeter than their sweet tea!  They could have frosted it and served it as a piece of cake.  I know that "sweet" corn bread is a "tradition", but I prefer the more savory version of that tradition.

*But the pulled pork along with their "Golden Mustard" and their "Red" sauces was very, very good.  And since I was at 'Q place, that's all that mattered.

I called Time Warner - usually if there's a problem in the neighborhood there's a recording on the machine saying so.  But there wasn't - I got a person on the phone and she checked and yes, ten minutes before I got home the whole Studio City area went down.  A technician was on his way to see what it was about.  I went off to Nate 'n' Al's to have lunch.  When I returned two hours later it still wasn't working.  I called again.  This time I was told that it looked like just before they were about to reboot the system they'd found a cut in the fibre optic line - I have no idea what that means.  He thought it might be another ninety minutes.  I turned on a movie and watched ninety minutes.  Still not working.  Called back.  This time I was told the crew had arrived at the problem area at 5:45 and were working with no ETA.  How this problem could have been a problem from 1:10 and nothing done about it until 5:45 is, well, it's Time Warner isn't it?  Even the guy I was speaking to said it was unacceptable, but there was nothing else he could tell me.  Given that we've been without service for six hours, I'm not confident that these complete incompetent idiots will have this up and running before midnight, if then.  I do hope everyone affected calls and makes them credit us for the time down - I know I will be doing so.  It's so annoying, and they just don't care - they don't care enough to let almost four hours go by without dispatching a crew.  And now it is dark out - will they work through the night?  Especially if it starts raining.  Doubtful.  And so I'm going to post some emergency notes right now - very short - and then should Time Warner get their act together before midnight, THEN I'll go in and replace them with proper notes.  So, let's just say that right now I was really not in the mood to log on and find five pages of posts.

I'm SO annoyed right now.  I did have a good pastrami sandwich.  I really find it hard to write and post on the laptop these days - because, yes, I now have the new 24inch iMac, which I'm totally in love with.  Let's just say I pulled a few strings and after said pulling of strings the new iMac was mine.

I had a great evening of movie and video entertainment.

I began with ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST on Blu-ray. I have never thought the film looked very good on home video so I was rather surprised and delighted the Blu-ray was as sharp and mostly pristine as it was. It didn't have a lossless audio track. Warners gave it a high bitrate Dolby Digital instead which was OK since it's not exactly a dynamic sound mix anyway.

Since I was so familiar with the story, I kept my eye on the various supporting actors in the cast to see what they were doing while Jack was "emoting." Nice work all around from those guys.

Next I watched the next episode on THE UNIVERSE Blu-ray set. This one was "The Moon," and it was quite fascinating with various speculations about the origins of our moon.

Did you folks know the moon is moving away from us every year? It moves away about an inch and a half every year.

As I was watching "The Moon" and thinking what I wanted to watch next, I remembered that I hadn't watched a laserdisc in a long, long time. So, I glanced through the shelves of discs and settled on A TIME TO KILL.

Yep, I have never replaced this movie with the DVD version. I didn't remember it being so long, but I did enjoy it after not having seen it for quite a long time.

Books that influenced me to read.

When I was young I loved to read The Wizard of Oz and Alice In Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Actually The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland taught me to read. We had recordings of both books. I do not remember who read the Wizard Of Oz, but Cyril Ritchard narrated the Alice books. It was seven albums or so and each cover had an copy of Tenniel, the original illustrator, art work. I would listen to the books over and over again and follow them in the printed versions.

I also enjoyed Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn but my mother had to explain to me about the treatment of the blacks in the books.

The author of the very long musical sent me an e-mail - I'd told him that I hadn't been able to respond to an earlier e-mail from Time Warner - he said he has the number of the assistant to the top guy there, and he suggested I call and lodge a major complaint - three times in one month is three times too many - and the low-level fools' idea of compensation for the lost time is to credit you $1.50 off your bill.  Apparently when the author called the assistant, he got two free months of Internet service.  I'm up for that, frankly.
