Although we are not in danger of closing my office has released a memo detailing our financial suffering. They have made some decisions about cost cutting including no more magazines. When the subscription runs out they won't renew. They have stopped having flowers at the front desk. No more refreshments for any meeting including those with outside clients. No travel unless it's absolutely necessary. No hardware upgrades (as my computer begins to die). The possibility of not printing some of our long standing publications and turning them into downloadable PDF files. They have furloughed our temps. We have a group of long term temp employees, some have been here for 12 or 13 years and they all must take 2 months off without pay. This won't be happening to full time permanent employees but it's still scary.

There is a Q & A session this afternoon which I assume will be fully attended.

Good morning, all! I slept late because I was up too late reading my friend Lewis Stadlen's new bio. I'm up to the beginning of rehearsals for MINNIE'S BOYS and Shelley Winters' craziness. I'd heard a lot of stories on the show from Lewis, and sometimes from Lewis with the late great Julie Kurnitz, and he's got a few here I'd never heard before.

Today, the laundry is in the washers, and I have vacuuming and mopping. After that, concert work. My ANYA CD didn't arrive yesterday; perhaps today.

I'd have to echo elmore:  The Garry Moore Show, Ed Sullivan, and the Bell Telephone Hour as well as The Hollywood Palace.  Actually, I wasn't allowed to stay up for the Garry Moore Show very much, but my parents watched it religiously and I used to listen to it from my bedroom.  It was like radio...I remember particularly "That wonderful, wonderful year!"

BK, I remember The Golden Mall and that theatre well.  I used to work at the Book City in the Golden Mall.  I think I also remember Udana Power.  Was she Texan by any chance?  I think I met her once at a party of old Dallasites a friend gave.  I probably still have a business card of hers tucked in an old phone book someplace.  She seemed, at the time, sort of New Age-ish.  You may have also re-introduced her to me at the Schmidt/Jones night at the Pasadena Playhouse.  Is that possible?

I will be bitterly disappointed if the Blu-ray of THE ROBE doesn't arrive today. I cannot watch that old DVD version of the movie. As BK said, it's wretched with lots of speckles, spots, dirt, pretty awful color, and a partially cropped picture.

DR MattH, since I deduct every CD from my taxes, I print out a receipt for everthing I buy on Paypal. I would think you should be able to deduct a lot of your CD purchases as a reviewer. My Paypal receipt is dated 3/04, if that's any help at all, and I think the site went up about a week later.

I guess LIFE ON MARS, since it's sadly departing in two weeks, is working up a big send off fro the series, I sure hope it comes out on DVD.

Good morning!

"The Robe" had me blown away last night.  I've never seen it like this.  The richness in detail is exhilarating.  The score sounds incredible, especially on Audio Channel 6 (isolated).  It's long been one of my top 5 favorite scores and Fox Home Entertainment served the film and the soundtrack very well with this massive restoration.

I noted for the first time in all my many viewings of the film that the photography is quite special -- master cinematographer Leon Shamroy did some incredible work during his career, but most folks know him as the man behind those special filters for "South Pacific".  His work on many films, including "Cleopatra", is exquisite.  Here, working with a brand new medium, you can see the extraordinary efforts Shamroy went to in order to "properly light" his shots, especially those where the only light sources were oil lamps or torches.  When Marcellus bursts into the room in Cana where he learns Demetrius is staying, the light streaming in through the window -- the light by which Demetrius was reading -- is absolutely poetic.

"The Robe" is seldom, if ever, cited for the absolutely clever and innovative composition of images in shots through the film, but director Henry Koster FILLED his screen with highly dramatic placements of people.  Some of the shots are staggeringly beautiful.  The "Palm Sunday" sequence as Marcellus rides toward Jerusalem is stunning.  As the procession passes Demetrius, there is this TRUE sense that Jesus is off camera and "behind us" as we look at Demetrius watching him pass.  Add to that the wonderful scoring and it's an extraordinary cinematic moment.  And this film is FILLED with extraordinary moments -- Marcellus' entry into the slave market, Diana's farewell to Marcellus at the docks in Ostia, the sequence where Demetrius seeks out Jesus in order to warn him of what the Romans are doing and his conversation with Judas (an unbilled Michael Ansara), the entire Crucifixion sequence (and it's extremely moving), Marcellus' madness, the arrival at Capri (stunning shot), the rescue of Demetrius, the chase and the final confrontation with Caligula in the palace are all extremely memorable and satisfying.  I can think of NO CinemaScope film that used the process more dramatically or more satisfyingly (contrast it with MGM's "It's Always Fair Weather" where folks often seem lost in cavernous spaces).

Performances in this film are NOT -- repeat NOT -- under the radar, despite the common pap you read time and time again.  Burton is wonderful as Marcellus, Jean Simmons is exquisite as Diana, and Victor Mature is a revelation as Demetrius.   In fact, Mature probably turns in the best performance of his career in one of the better performances in this film.  Not to be left out is Jay Robinson whose Caligula is one of the finest screen creations I've seen.

I have no idea what the Standard DVD of this film looks like, but I can tell you that in Blu-ray, it's heartbreakingly beautiful.

I was disappointed, however, in the special features section of publicity materials.  I was hoping to see press materials, posters, lobby cards and stills unknown to me.   Instead, I see a rather beat-up copy of the souvenir program (I have two in my collection in far better condition), a few lobby cards from the 1963 reissue set (I have that set, plus 80% of the original lobby set), NO stills from the color front-of-the-house (8 X 10) variety (I have a mint set of these) and nothing but a few black and white samples from the campaign/pressbook (I have a complete pressbook with color stills throughout).  I did see one poster I'd never seen, but I have tons more stuff in my meager collection than was offered.   There were, in one section, some wonderful color portraits I've never seen, including one of Caligula and some posed shots of other actors in the cast.

I have to say that on the basis of the smiley-boxed "How the West Was Won" and this issue of "The Robe", my investment in Blu-ray has been MORE than worth it!

In other news...

I talked to my father this morning about the upcoming trip to the Philippines.  It turns out that the reason they've planned this trip so relatively fast, soon, is because my Dad's brother is ill.  Alas, due to flight availability and my own work schedule, it doesn't look like I'll be able to make the trip with them this time.  Apparently, the only available flight the week of April 27 is on April 27 - which is my closing day.  There is a possibility that I could fly out there on May 4, but I'm just not sure I could afford to juggle some of the gigs I already have lined up - and forfeit those pay checks either.

I'm off today, and as I walk around downtown Charleston this afternoon, I'll give it some more thought...

BK,

Re ANYA:

I ordered the morning the item went live on your Kritzerland site. (Was that a Monday?). My mail server deletes mail after three days unless it's saved, so I can't forward you the invoice, but I definitely got one from Paypal. Remember that the invoice will be under my given name (ugh) Francis.

I've read that ABC is planning a DVD even as we speak about it!

I have the new regular THE ROBE dvd which I enjoy very much.  I like the movie, I had even bought a video of it several years ago....I also got DEMETRIUS AND THE GLADIATORS, both were shown on NBC'S SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES, probably during the first season.

"Demetrius" was shown, but not "The Robe."  As Saturday Night at the Movies was in the second half of its second season (1962-63), "The Robe" was having its first theatrical re-release (1963).

ABC bought the rights from Fox to do annual Easter airings of "The Robe" starting in 1968.  They paid quite a tidy sum for it, too.  After a few years, Fox sold the rights for TV packages of "The Robe" and ABC switched its Easter offering  to "The Ten Commandments" which continues to this day.

Happily enough, the very first movie shown on Saturday Night at the Movies was the very first movie COMPLETED in CinemaScope (albeit the second one to be released to theaters):  "How to Marry A Millionaire".

Thank you, Mikey!

I just checked; you can sign up to be notified when it's available, but I didn't see any pre-order link. I can't believe such a good series is being cancelled. What a moronic network!

I am disheartened by the show's lack of success as anyone, but the network can't really be blamed. They gave it every possible chance to catch on, placing it behind two of their biggest hits: GREY'S ANATOMY and LOST, and the public just didn't take to it after watching its pilot (it did have 12 million people watch its premiere episode.)

So, blame the moronic public for not supporting a well made show. They're the reason it's being taken off.

JMK, no nothing got mis-addressed - I have NO control over the USPS.  Some got their discs on Tuesday morning (I shipped end of day Monday) and some still haven't gotten them.  It makes no sense, and I don't do delivery confirmation anymore as I'd have to raise the shipping prices, which I'll probably have to do anyway once they raise their rates in May.

Speaking of the USPS - it does seem they keep raising their rates and that every time they do so, their service gets WORSE.  It's disgusting.  I'm waiting on two important checks for Kritzerland - both sent over the weekend.  There is NO excuse for them taking this long and it's going to be VERY problematic if it takes much longer, as I have several invoices that just arrived and I do like to pay on time.

BK, even without delivery confirmation, it just seems like it would be a whale of a lot easier to use PayPal's multi-shipping order function and import all your orders and let them print out automatically.  You don't need to use delivery confirmation and it's all automatic.  You just select method of mailing and weight (so you'd have to separate the dual from single orders) and the rest is done at the push of a button.  I can't believe you hand address all those packages.

I've never skied in my life and after this latest accident I have negative desire to do so. Sonny Bono, Michael Kennedy, my sister (she didn't die but the first time she was on skis she fell and broke her leg).

I grew up skiing.  I've cut my head open with the tip of my ski and had a t-bar smack me in the mouth and cut my lip open, but considering the amount of time I spent on skis as a kid, that wasn't too bad.   It's been years since I downhilled.  I would go again.  I also have my cross country skies which I think are harder to control

Just heard the Illya master with all my fixes and it's really good - couldn't do anything about the washy reverb, but with the EQ we came up with, it certainly minimizes it and there is finally some low end to the recording - it sounds alive and vibrant and having the two additional numbers and everything in show order makes all the difference in the world.

Back from some Pasta Papa at Hugo's.  I had a new Anya order waiting - for five copies - ordered by - drum roll - John Gavin, husband to Constance Towers.

Swoon!

Who knew Mr. Gavin was a of musical theater.

DR MBarnum:

MrGavin, as mentioned by DRTCB has appeared in musicals on stage, besides, he's bubby to Constance Towers (Since 1974!) who sings on the cast recording of ANYA!
I guess the extra cd he's buying is for ME!! LOL!

Welcome, DR (Dear Reader) SweetIrma!  We are glad you have joined us.

Well, it is probably better if I don't talk about the offer.  However, let me just say that I will be playing Brother Arvide in GUYS AND DOLLS opening May 4 at the Seattle Musical Theatre.

DR Elmore, LIFE ON MARS is already available for pre-order on Amazon.com

As a member of the moronic public, let me just say that I didn't like the show.  Sorry that I am so stupid.

                    It's your fault? You moron!

By the time I got back down into the den to watch '21,' I didn't have enough time left to do so since I was going to have to watch UGLY BETTY "live."

Therefore, I began by watching another MOONLIGHT episode, the one with Mick acting as a personal bodyguard to the Brittney-like star and being stalked by a photographer who saw him get hit by a car and get up and walk away.

DR Elmore, I'll have to differ with you about ABC's decision to put UGLY BETTY on hiatus, too. I love the show, but it's been steadily losing audience all season, so I can't blame ABC to try to stop the bleeding by trying something else in the slot. If they flop quickly, ABC will bring BETTY right back. But if they hit, then ABC will look for someplace else to place BETTY. Wednesday at 8 seems like a prime spot to try it since SCRUBS and BETTER OFF TED finished in third place there last night. BETTY might end up there next season if the new comedies make an impact on Thursday next week.

I'm just grateful they haven't canceled BETTY.

Jack Lawrence, a songwriter who wrote the lyrics for hits such as "All or Nothing at All," "Tenderly" and "Beyond the Sea," has died. He was 96.

Lawrence, who fractured his pelvic bone in a fall in his Redding, Conn., home Friday, died of complications Sunday at Danbury Hospital, said Richard D. Lawrence, Lawrence's longtime partner whom he adopted.

In a songwriting career that began in the early 1930s, Lawrence had his songs recorded by artists such as Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, the Andrews Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Tony Bennett.

Among his songs, written in collaboration, are "Sunrise Serenade," which was recorded by Glenn Miller; and "Yes, My Darling Daughter," a hit for Dinah Shore.

Singer-pianist Michael Feinstein, a friend, said Lawrence had lots of hits through the years but comparatively few became standards.

"A standard is a song that lives through the ages," Feinstein told The Times on Tuesday. "Like many songwriters, a lot of his hits at the time have not endured past the era in which they were popular."

But, Feinstein said, "various other songs were ones that became a veritable theme song" for the performer, and their status as standards was assured.

"Tenderly," he said, became Rosemary Clooney's theme song.

"All or Nothing at All," he said, "was one of Frank Sinatra's early hits that survived because of Sinatra's love of the song and his revising of it and re-recording it through the years."

And "Beyond the Sea" will always be connected with Bobby Darin.

"It was a French song for which an English lyric was created with no success," Feinstein said. "Then Jack wrote a new English lyric, which was successful with an anthemic sort of lyric that matched the majesty of the tune.

"But when Bobby Darin found the song and swung it, it became an instant classic, and people only perform it a la Bobby Darin."

Although Lawrence was primarily a lyricist, he also had great success writing music and lyrics, said Feinstein, who wrote the foreword to Lawrence's 2004 memoir, "They All Sang My Songs."

Lawrence's song "Linda," which he wrote for his lawyer's young daughter, Linda Eastman -- she later married Paul McCartney -- was a big hit for Buddy Clark. And "If I Didn't Care" established the success of the Ink Spots.

The son of Russian immigrants, Lawrence was born in Brooklyn on April 7, 1912. He was a self-taught pianist and began writing songs at age 10.

But after he graduated from high school, his parents urged him to enroll in the First Institute of Podiatry.

He did and graduated in 1933, about the same time his first song, the hit "Play Fiddle Play," written with Arthur Altman and Emery Deutsch, was published.

Lawrence, who served in the Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine during World War II, continued writing songs throughout the war.

His songwriting took him to Hollywood -- he shared a best song Oscar nomination with Richard Myers for "Hold My Hand" in the 1954 comedy "Susan Slept Here" -- and Broadway, for which he wrote music and lyrics for a number of productions, including the 1964-65 musical comedy "I Had a Ball."

In the '80s, Lawrence was both a Broadway producer and owner of the Jack Lawrence and the Audrey Wood theaters.

He was co-producer of off-Broadway's long-running "Other People's Money" and on Broadway with "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" and "Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean."

Lawrence was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975.

"He was very secure in his place in the songwriting order," Feinstein said. "He knew that he was not the best-known, but he also had the confidence of having had great success through the decades."

Richard Lawrence is his sole survivor.

And BONES had an entertaining episode, too, even though I guessed the murderer's identity correctly. I enjoyed the new intern.

In tribute to Mr Lawrence and Rosy!

The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly
The trembling trees embraced the breeze tenderly
Then you and I came wandering by
And lost in a sigh were we
The shore was kissed by sea and mist tenderly
I can't forget how two hearts met breathlessly
Your arms opened wide and closed me inside
You took my lips, you took my love so tenderly

So...

I had a wonderful time walking around historic, beautiful, downtown Charleston earlier today.  The weather was gorgeous.  The food was delicious.  And the people were friendly.  I ended up spending almost six hours just wandering around - with two "food breaks". ;)

I spent most of my time on Market Street and East Bay Street.  The open-air Market Street Market was open, so I checked that out for a bit.  The usual assortment of vendors: jewelers, foodstuffs, and souvenirs - all with a Charleston twist. I was particularly fascinated with the "Sweetgrass Baskets" which are all made right at the market by various craftsmen and craftswomen.  I briefly chatted with "Brenda" who said she comes from a long line of basket-weavers: "I've done other types of work, but I always end up coming back to the baskets."

After walking up and down Market Street four times - I made sure to check out the vendors inside and outside the market, and on both sides of the street - I had worked up an appetite, so...

I settled into lunch at Magnolias (http://www.magnolias-blossom-cypress.com).  The theatre's caterer had tipped me off to this place, and said that I had to try their chicken livers.  So... I did. :)

I started off my meal at Magnolia's with a cup of their Blue Crab Bisque which was accompanied by a fresh-from-the-oven boule of sourdough bread which was served with a butter-cream-cheese-and-chive spread.  Needless to say, I was smiling.  A lot.

I just sat at the bar since I was dining solo, but the bartender, Chris, chatted me up - and gave me suggestions for my next visit.  -He mentioned something about a "Warm Cream Cheese Pecan Brownie"...

*I also spoke with one of their managers, Brenda.  She informed me that while she was growing up, she was "scarred and scared" of eating chicken livers.  However, once she started working at Magnolias, she got over that fear. :)

Since I did not have dessert at Magnolias, I worked my way a little further down East Bay Street to Baked (http://www.bakednyc.com).  I had passed by Baked over the weekend, and thought my eyes were deceiving me since the Baked I know is in Brooklyn.  Well, it turns out there is a Baked in Charleston, and it's run by the father of one of the founders/owners of the original Brooklyn location.

I eventually ended up at White Point Garden which not only offers great views of Charleston Harbor, but there are also various Civil War memorials and memorabilia set up throughout the park.  It's also an "Off Leash" park for dogs and other animals... ;)

Yes, I have and I like Mr Lelouch movies very much! His previous one was not "too good" I am afraid, (It was reissued a few weeks later, with a new "montage" but people were not interested anymore)but his last "Roman De Gare" was quite moving with a new actress (Then!) Audrey Dana that is engaging!

(Let's say that the intellectuals never like Mr Lelouch with the movie goers know better ... as always!)

Miss Dana is in a new French movie (Welcome. Yes, It's the title in French. Welcome) and she's quite good there too!

The fascinating Vincent Lindon plays opposite her.

I said "moronic network." And I do mean moronic network: they're taking "Ugly Betty" off the air to run "Motherhood" and Christina Applegate's Samantha series, and I don't believe LOST was a good lead in to LIFE ON MARS at all.

I am sorry that I ever commented on Matt's post.  I just don't understand how not liking a TV show makes me a moron.  I also never liked MY SO CALLED LIFE no matter how many times the critics and the entertainment magazines insisted that I had to like that show.

Well, I don't watch LOST and never want to, so there!

That's your severe, and completely deserved, misfortune.

You all must realize that "the moronic public" being discussed this evening is really only those members of the public with Nielsen boxes in their homes.

You do realize that,  right?

It's "that" moronic public that didn't tune in to "Life on Mars."

They preferred a CBS procedural they got hooked on before "Life on Mars" was ever considered.

New shows SELDOM survive when placed opposite top 10 fare.

I've never watched a single episode of Lost either - nor most of the other shows on in the last twenty years.  I don't feel any worse for it.  Someday, I may pick up the DVD sets - that's how I discovered Alias, which I enjoyed for two seasons and then which completely went down the toilet.
