As promised, anyone who'd like to PRE preorder Illya Darling - here it is.  The official announcement will be next Monday, which is when it will go live on the site.  I suspect this will move pretty fast.  You know the routine - 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (or 6.50 overseas) payable via paypal.com directly to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

HELLO, ILLYA!

Kritzerland is proud to present the first ever CD release of the Original Cast Recording of Illya Darling, with a score by Manos Hadjidakis and Joe Darion.

Illya Darling opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theater on April 11, 1967.  It was based on the wildly popular Greek film Never On Sunday, which made an International star of Melina Mercouri.  The film was written and directed by American Jules Dassin, who also played the male lead.  Illya Darling would have many of the same players, including Miss Mercouri, writer/director Dassin, the film’s costume designer, Theoni V. Aldredge, and film cast members Titos Vandis and Despo.  The film’s composer, the Oscar-winning Manos Hadjidakis (Oscar for Best Song – Never On Sunday), would write the score, with lyrics by Man Of La Mancha’s Joe Darion.

The show had a difficult birth during its out-of-town tryouts, and it opened on Broadway to tepid reviews – but those tepid reviews also were love letters to Miss Mercouri.  The show received six Tony nominations, winning none.  Because of Miss Mercouri’s reviews and star power, the show ran almost a year, and then toured with Cyd Charisse.  The original cast album was issued by United Artists, who had funded the show in full.   That LP put the songs in a completely different order than they were in the show.

For this first-ever CD release, we have put the songs back in show order and have given the proper titles to any that were renamed for the LP.  In going through the session tapes, we made the incredible discovery that two songs were recorded but not used on the LP – the show’s opening number “Po, Po, Po” and a number called “Birthday Song.”  Both songs were transferred and mixed from the four-track session tapes and put where they belong in the show’s song order.  Hearing the show with those two numbers and everything in show order is something of a revelation.

The colorful cast includes an incandescent Melina Mercouri, Orson Bean, Titos Vandis, Nikos Kourkoulos, Rudy Bond, Hal Linden, and Joe E. Marks.  The CD has been mastered from the original album master tapes (and for the two added songs, from the original four-track session tapes).

The CD is a Limited Edition of 1000 copies only.

The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship the second week of May – however, as those who’ve ordered directly from Kritzerland know, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to three weeks ahead of the street date.

I came across it last week while working on the California Endowment.

DR JRAND

Posed this question yesterday

And on 60 Minutes, there was an "inspiring" story about a schizophrenic musician who spends a lot of time in a concert hall in Washington DC (I think) and his struggle with his mental illness.  OH AND GUESS WHAT?  Paramount is releasing a movie about HIS LIFE starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr.....  And they wonder why we have lost respect for television "journalism." How can 60 Minutes let itself be used as a shill for Paramount

Simple answer: Paramount owns CBS as Universal owns NBC and Disney owns ABC and 20th Century-Fox owns Fox

TOD

New Yorkers would know the answer to this

In the late 70's and somewhere into the 80's there was a cable channel that should a program on Friday night (late) and young men and women would sit around naked and people would call the show and speak to them. I think you had to pay for that privilege. I think the hostess was a big busted blond lady who the show was name after.

It was fascinating to watch as in Montreal we didn't have any programs like that

I made it through a whole week of work (well part time days, I only stayed until 2:30) so Saturday we  (drum roll please) took down the Christmas tree.

Yes - the tree has been up all this time - we decided to keep itup until I was better and now I am better!

I have been eating three meals a day - albeit toddler sized portions - but I have not used the cans for 4 days now!!

Good morning, all! I've been up and about since 6:30. This morning I've got about 2 hours of work before I step out to see my barber and pay a visit to Jo Loesser about THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. After lunch with her, I'm back here to continue Mr Raines' concert work.

I just ordered ILYA DARLING, so I'm happy as a clam this morning.

TOD:
Robin Byrd; I stopped watching her show because it got to the point where it was nothing but reruns. Nothing worse than stale porn, and I'm not talking 2 or 3 reruns I'm talking 20 to 30.
There used to be this peculiar "New York" show with a drag queen host that was often informative and always funny in the late 1980s; can't recall the name but I was sorry to see it vanish.

Rosengarten was dropped by FoodTV, about when Scripps took over I think.  He wrote some of the restaurant reviews for Gourmet for a while, has written a few books, and I think has an on-line subscription foodie newsletter to which I don't subscribe.

So, of course, there's a link (http://www.davidrosengarten.com/content.asp?type=site&id=12).

TOD:

By the time we got cable in our neighborhood in about 1978/79, the fare wasn't as daring as other DRs have reported.  Garden State Cable never had any kind of public access programming like other cable outlets had, so there wasn't much in the way of the craziness that NYC had during the 70's.

I'm not recalling a lot of the early stuff, at the mo'.  I remember a fun show on HBO hosted by Dick Cavett that looked back at the early decades of the 20th century.  NOT NECESSARILY THE NEWS was generally a pretty funny show ( I would love to see this on DVD.)  I was also a fan of FRAGGLE ROCK for the first two seasons or so.

I think the best team is pretty clear. There is really only one team who i find strong
enough for me to think they really deserve to win. And that is tammy and victor.
As for who my favorite teams are, well for some reason i have loved those red
heads since the beginning. They are not as strong competitively as my usual
favorites. But i just find them to be hard working, really sweet and generous. And
somehow they are still in it.  I also do like tammy and victor. Although some times
the brother can be slightly irritating.  It was an interesting show last night with
the teams at the bottom only being a minute apart. Although those are my 2 least
favorite teams. So i really did not care either way.  I'm not crazy about the black
sisters (don't remember their names). But it's not like they've done anything for me
to really hate them. They are fine. Just really boring. And not that strong. I'm also
not as fond of the dead kid/mom anymore. At times i find them sweet and
endearing (like when he cried at the poverty). But i also have found him sort of
mean-spirited at times. And i still like them alright. But they are not my favorites.

I saw the UPS truck pull up on the street in front of my house, but I didn't check to see if he brought anything to me or if he was going to my neighbor's house (who gets almosty daily UPS shipments for his in-home business).

Right now, I have nothing to review, but this might change today. If not, I have the day off and I do have two remaining items on the DVR: THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK from last Thursday.

I will want to finish '21' that I started last night.

And one of these days I'm going to get to THE YELLOW ROLLS-ROYCE. It's so funny. You wait years and years to get a release of a favorite film, and then when it comes, it sits in the shrink wrap for weeks and weeks (sometimes years and years).

Same forecast here in Charleston.  I was thinking of heading to one of the beaches, but since the temps run cooler at the beaches by about 10-15 degrees, well...  I also want to complete my the "main street walking tour" of downtown Charleston, so I may just head down to Meeting Street later and do just that.

Whatever happened to Pia Zadora?

One wonders.  She recorded her last album in '95 and she sold Pickfair in aught five.

Which brings me to my college story:

My goofy friend Doug met a girl at a mixer, they hit it off, and made a date for the following week.  For some reason, they didn't meet at her place, and when he drove her home--to her aunt's house where she was living--she guided him up into the Beverly Hills until he realized they were going to a big landed estate at the top.

Doug was suitably impressed when his gf remarked, "I wonder what the Rolls is doing out.  We don't use it very much."

Well, it was of course some time later in the day, after he had met Aunt Mary and chatted to her for a while, that it dawned on him that he was at Pickfair, talking to Mary Pickford, and the little statue on the table he had been fiddling with was Uncle Oscar.

Doug actually became serious enough with the young lady that he went to England with her family for the summer, and they were planning a big Hollywood wedding--"it's obvious that everyone who's anyone is here.  This monumental merger was the wedding of the year."

But they broke up, he eventually married a less jet-setty lady, and they lived since in Tempe AZ, where he is a professor of physics.

:)

I have friends in Richmond who keep their Christmas tree up for as long as "tree-ly" possible.  They say it makes it much easier to take off the decorations when almost all of the needles have fallen off.  ;)

Another friend of mine actually "plants" his Christmas tree in a huge pot in his living room.  He doesn't mulch the tree until after it has gone through its "Easter Egg Tree" phase.

Bruce, I didn't realize (or had forgottten) that you had done the themes for the shows in "The Ratings Game."  They were very funny and eerily accurate.  I think they made me laugh even harder than Marc Shaiman's faux news music from "Broadcast News."

It becoming a running joke with a bunch of us when a big story (like the OJ Simpson trial or John Kennedy Jr.'s plane crash) of  how long it would take for the story to get its own theme for live team coverage  and panelists and "experts."
You could put out a CD of the OJ Murder Theme (honestly there was one).

TOD:  I like the show "Brothers" when it came on (HBO?) in the 90's, I think.  Maybe earlier.  I loved the show "The Boys" about a group of entertainers and "Lords" who belonged to a take-off on the Friar's Club in New York.  Great actors and clever dialogue.  I subscribed to Showtime long after I wanted to just for that show.  It was a summer show, and I think it ended after about 13 shows.

Can someone tell me how to make my avatar show up a bit bigger.  The original was 320 x 240 and it showed up tiny.  I tried resizing the width to 110 like most of the other avatars, which gave me 110 x 83.

It still looks the same.  How can I make it bigger without bugging Mr. Mark Bakalor?

And thanks to DR JOSE for:

The Soloist info

I remember seeing "The Soloist" on display in various bookstores, but never paid any attention to it.  -I went through a phase where I bought almost any music-related book, and, well, I had to stop that "impulse", so...

When I was in LA last year, I attended a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall - the LA Phil playing Hindemith and Mahler.  After the concert, I did some browsing in their gift shop.  "The Soloist" was prominently displayed on the counter alongside an announcement that Steve Lopez would be doing a reading and Q&A session the following week.  Who?  Then I started hearing some ladies at the counter talking about the book.  Hmm...

When I got back to New York City, I ended up downloading the audiobook version of it - I had a free Audible.com credit.  I still remember staying up late at night in order to finish "reading" the book.  And there were a couple of times when I found myself missing my subway stop, as well as finding myself crying during a train ride while listening to the story, the true story.

Again... Read the book. :)

Question:

Yes, it began at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis last year. It was a HUGE success, sold out in hours and extended. It got lukewarm reviews but it's successful enough that they have begun a National Tour. It will kick off at the Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey and move around the country. It is based on the television series and the book I believe and Melissa Gilbert is playing the Mother. Steve Blanchard is playing Michael Landon

No, it was something else, Carsten Something, maybe?

I'm back from my various and sundry errands. I had a wonderful visit with Mrs Jo Sullivan Loesser, who is one of the best, and her colleague and my dear friend Joseph Weis, I think my new haircut looks just like the old one, and now I'm back to Mr Raines' concert charts. I picked up a new book at the big new Barnes and Noble at 46th and Fifth Avenue about Cafe society. Jo wants to read it when I finish it.

Great news, Vixmom!  Congrats!!

I remember watching both of these shows!  I loved them. ;D They are probably the earliest cable shows that I can remember watching.

And I completed my afternoon watching last Thursday's 30 ROCK. One of the best shows it's had lately, much of that due to Jon Hamm's marvelous turn in the last of his three-episode story arc. Sorry to see him go. Hope he makes a return trip at some point as he and Tiny Fey worked well together. And Jack (Alec Baldwin) had a fun storyline this week, too.

Well our tree is artifical so we didn't have to worry about the needles falling off... I was considering keeping it around to hang Easter Eggs on after all teh ornaments were down but Vixdad whisked that tree into it's box and (with the Vixter's help) carried it out to the garage to its summer home in the garage loft

I never heard this story before! Now I'm getting better we have to start "hanging out" again!  I have missed you Billy!

Back from the listening to tapes session and the news is fantastic!  Two years ago, another film music label wanted to do this score.  They got these same nine tapes.  They could only find one side of the album (this was released on LP) in stereo - there were a LOT of mono album masters, none in stereo - the only stereo marked on a box was side two of the album and that was the original three-track recording pre-album master (where some rather ugly reverb, typical for the time) was added.  There was one box among the nine that was confusingly marked and that box was my hope - it was side one, but didn't have stereo marked on it - that was because someone had put a sticker over that part of the box - so, we put up that reel and voila, it was the side one three-track recording.  Hoo and ray, is all I can say.  I was so happy I danced a rather pathetic jig.  So, not only do we get to put out my holy grail soundtrack (and no, Rio was not my all-time holy grail that's never been on CD), it will be remixed directly from the original three-track masters, and I can put a nice, clean reverb on (the recording is, naturally, completely dry and doesn't sound good without some sort of room ambience added), and it should be spectacular.  Oh, boy!  Oh, joy!  It's on the fast track and will be announced two weeks after Illya is officially announced.

Glad I bought it last night.  I'll start reading it tonight after DWS, unfortunately that may mean i don't get my cleaning done tomorrow.  But I am enjoying my days off

Ben, I am curious how the food is at that dinner theater.  Outside of their brunch buffet, the menu doesn't sound terribly exciting.

Anthony thinks the food is great. I've only had the steamed fish and the brunch. Even though technically if you're going to see the show you have to eat in the restaurant they bend the rules for the actors so I haven't had a full meal in the restaurant. They feed the actors between shows so Anthony has had many meals. I had the fish because on Friday (last August when I went to see How to Succeed) they serve a big fish dinner. Anthony gets it and has it between shows. I was coming in on Friday afternoon and one of the other actors doesn't like fish so he got the fish dinner for me and we both had steamed whitefish with vegetables. I will have that again this Friday. I'll have Brunch on Sunday with Anthony and I get to sit at the Actor's Table but that's the only time I'll eat in the restaurant.

My, that was a long answer!

I've been struggling through this French motion picture from France entitled Love Songs with Catherine Deneuve with musique de Michel Legrand - I really want to like it, but the characters are really thinly drawn and really irritating.  We'll see if I tough it out or switch to something else.

Do you call the mind "Mariah"?

She told me she prefers "Ms. Wind".  And she spells it Maria, to everyone's confusion.

 ;D

When we named our cat Maria, after the song, we of course had to spell it the confusing way.

So I imagine that all of her teachers mispronounced her name in school?

Last night from DR Danise:

"Everything is going well with Sheena and I.  I'm just trying my best to hang on and pray that Consumer Affairs will be able to help me."

I'm sure being back with Sheena will help DR Danise's spirits

It did. :)

"I'm feeling so much better now that I have Sheena.

Yes, both of them are loving Sheena.  She kept trying to lick Johns face the first night like she was saying "Thank You!!".  He said she was a suck up (in a joking tone) because she seemed to know it was up to him if we could stay or go.  I think they are really going to miss her when we finely get home.

I'm so proud of her, she is being such a good girl.  She knows how to ask to go out. She hardly barks.

Some more good news. Channel 28 called me again.  I told him about what the guy at 8 said
(he had been nasty to Danise) and I think that kinda helped.  I hope so.  I just really want to go home.

Had an interesting evening filled with enjoyable viewing.

I began with the Blu-ray of MICHAEL CLAYTON. I first saw the film on HBO a few months ago. It was in HD, but HBO had reformatted the 2.35:1 to 1.78:1. I enjoyed the movie so much that I found a really cheap Blu-ray copy on Ebay for about $8 shipped. So I snapped it up.

Really enjoyed seeing it in its original screen format and in HD. The sound was a high bitrate Dolby Digital which was OK, but I would rather it had been Dolby TrueHD.

The SD versions of THE WIZARD OF OZ and GONE WITH THE WIND looked very good with satisfying color. The Blu-ray versions will be taken from the high def masters used for those transfers, so they should look just as good with, of course, much higher resolution and lossless soundtracks.

I wish Warners would offer (like Disney does with some of their catalog titles) a $10 rebate to "trade up" to the Blu-ray versions of films we've already bought. Those two sets are very expensive without some kind of rebate.

I am loving me my new XM Radio.  All last week I was serenaded by tons of Samuel Barber stuff, a lot of which I had never heard, including archival recordings of him singing.  Then tonight I had the Bway station on and they were playing PLAIN AND FANCY all the way through, and I was reminded what a sweet score that is.

BK, you may know already, but Jobim's recordings with Elizete are considered by Brasilian cognoscenti to be the "real" beginnings of the Bossa Nova, years before Orfeu Negro.

Tonight I got a bit of the cleaning bug, but have major plans for tomorrow.

One of the antique captain's chairs that my mom gave me was splitting down the middle of the seat, so I got out the gorilla glue and a clamp and fixed that.  After it dried I decided to wipe the chair with lemon oil (very good for wood) and that led to oiling my kitchen cupboards (made them look like new) and the antique pie safe, and a couple other antique pieces, and the door, and the railing for the stairway.... I finally stopped myself, but man does that stuff make the old wood glow.  It's a little oily to the touch right now, but by morning it will all have soaked in and will still look great.

DR Dakota, they are saying this may exceed the 1997 flood stage of 40.1 feet (you probably know this) Did your apartment building flood back then?

Notes are written.  And now I can do whatever I please, and what I please is to take a nice hot shower.

I am really giving myself peptalks... The river is near 30 feet . Up nearly 5 feet since this morning.

Dakota, do you have an evacuation plan?  Do you know where you can go if you have to?  I hear that the river will probably crest at 40 feet

Yes, I do... I would head up north on 29 or west on 94 and pick up 18 to go north

Several bridges are already closed.

I got no water in 97 but right now I feel somewhat good about that but you never now. EVery flood is different.

You mentioned that Red Cross was ending a vehicle up. I am wondering what detour they will take. Hiway 75 out of Breckenridge is closed as is I29 north of Wahpeton

We did not have water but you never know.. Different variables could come into play..

I do have to say one thing and god bless them. The college students in the three area colleges have really stepped up to the plate in this fight. It is heartwarming to see

I've seen them on the weather channel filling sand bags.  I did that for 2 months in the summer of 93 when we had our terrible floods.
