Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with coincidences, and now it is time for you to post until the coincidental cows come home.

Last night, I watched "Lost" and did not see that last scene coming! :o

I don't usually try to anticipate what might happen in a show or movie, so I was totally surprised.

Good morning, all! I was wide awake at 2 AM and, after tossing around for an hour, I decided around 3 to get up, bathe, and continue the concert work. So I'll work most of the day on Ron's charts, nap when I need to, and see if I can finish the megillah today. I'd like to get everything into Fed Ex by Friday night at 8 for a Monday delivery to Houston.

Whatever happened to Leland Palmer?

Topic of the Day:  the only actual two-person shows that I can think of that I've seen are a local production of The Last Five Years a couple of years ago and the video of I Do! I Do! with Lee Remick and Hal Linden.

I suppose that a one-man version of "Hamlet" doesn't count.  Or Romance/Romance, which is two one-act plays where the first act is basically two people and the second act is mainly two people.

BK:

The comedian Muledeer is Gary Muledear.

and I found out this about Debra Winger

She worked part-time in the local amusement park when she got thrown from a truck and suffered serious injuries and went temporarily blind for several months.

Good morning, all!  Just to prove I read the Notes, here is a bit of Wiki on Winger:

Quote
...she was involved in an automobile accident and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage as a result. She was left partially paralyzed and blind for ten months, although she was initially told that she would never see again. With time on her hands to think about her life, she decided that, if she recovered, she would move to California and become an actress.

While pursuing that ambition, she shared a brief romantic kiss with Bruce Kimmel.

Yes, I added that last paragraph.  Six days early.

The Topic of the Day is a tough one.  Of course, there is I Do! I Do!, as well as its progenitor The Fourposter, which I saw on TV in the early sixties with Jackie Cooper and Grimey Tamms.  I swear I saw it, but the IMDB doesn't list it.  They only list a 1964 TV version with Anne Haddy and Alistair Duncan and a Spanish miniseries.  But I know I saw Jackie and Tammy do it.  Hmmph!

Wiki mentions that it was done in 1955 on "Producer's Showcase", but the IMDB says in its episodes list that that was with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.  btw, an impressive list of plays were done on that show, including The Skin of Our Teeth, The Petrified Forest, Darkness at Noon, Peter Pan (original Mary Martin version), The Women, Cyrano de Bergerac, Bloomer Girl...  Ah, to run the the Museum of TV and Radio, or whatever it is called and spend a week sequestered there.  And I'd catch Evening Primrose while I was at it.

Has anyone seen Gurney's Love Letters?  It played on Broadway with a constantly rotating cast of famous actors.  And as a totally irrelevant footnote, the former chairman of our math department's son is married to Gurney's daughter.

There is always Krapps Last Tape, actually one character and his younger self on tape.

In my Alphabetical Musicals Project I have finished A Class Act.  Hearing it and A Chorus Line in the same week brought back a flood of '70s memories.  Like walking through Shubert Alley at just the right time to hear the "One" finale through the thin walls of the Shubert.  Or seeing Don Percassi with his dance bag on his way to the theatre and being too shy to stop him and tell him how much I loved the show--and maybe hit on him.  Like hearing Ed Kleban play "Mona" (now in A Class Act) in workshop and the ho-hum reaction it received...

On the way to work it was Coco, and next up is Colette Collage.  A happy alphabetic coincidence indeed.

re: high school musical 3 being a feature film.

It's not weird since the franchise is so successful. But i guess it was interesting to me because the movies seem wonderful for tv, yet slightly less so for shelling out money at the theatre.

I guess maybe their target audience of 5-15 doesn't care if their parents shell out money.

I did enjoy the movie because of the choreography and interesting musical numbers.  It just didn't seem enough to me though for the theatres.

To me there was one person who was a complete star, and that is my favorite, Adam.  But wow, i do not think i would have recognized him!!!!

Interesting that they said less positive things about their two former favorites, Lil Rounds and Danny Gokey. And now they are huge champions of Matt Giraud.

I hope michael sarver goes (just never cared for him). But the judges were really hard on another of their past favorites, megan. I hope it's michael that goes over megan or scott.

The judges were also wild about alison again!

WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF is often listed as a movie in which the entire cast was nominated, but that's a mistake. The roadhouse manager where they stop and dance was not nominated, so VIRGINIA WOOLF doesn't qualify.

My little experiment with the wireless keyboard has come to an end. I don't know if the level where I had the keyboard was causing it to malfunction or if I just couldn't strike the keys with firmness, but I kept having typing errors that weren't my fault. (I admit readily that I'm a miserable typist, but I don't often make mistakes with spaces between words, and the space bar was consistently not registering when I struck it.) I thought maybe the batteries were weak, but switching them out last night had no effect on the keyboard's accuracy, so I put it away and went back to a corded keyboard. I like the strike feel and "clicky" quality of this keyboard much better anyway.

I will watch the rest of ON THE OTHER HAND DEATH (which I'm watching for the second time)

I will watch another NCIS episode.

I'd like to watch another gay-themed movie, perhaps SHELTER from last year.

With UGLY BETTY gone for awhile and no BONES tonight, this frees up a little time to watch other things. I have three shows from last night on the DVR, and I'll still have to watch GREY'S ANATOMY "live" since there are shows on two other networks at 9 which will need to be recorded. Then, at 10, I get my own time back and can watch something already recorded either from last night or earlier this evening.

DR Jose - I got a white MacBook that looks just like Richard's on the outside.  It's a little fancier on the inside, mostly because it's almost 3 years newer.  I looked at the new aluminum machines, but they're more expensive and I wanted to add some goodies, like more memory, iWork, MobileMe, and AppleCare.  I could do that with the lower-priced base and only exceed my price-range by a couple hundred dollars.  This morning I've installed iWork and configured my email.  Next up - installing the printer and figuring out how much I want to transfer from my old computer to this new one.

As for the Topic of the Day:

Plays:
The Mysterty of Irma Vep
'Night Mother
Greater Tuna
A Tuna Christmas
Barrymore
- Which is more like a one and a half-character play ;)
Three Hotels
Frankie and Johnnie in the Clair de Lune
Talley's Folly
Oleanna
Old Wicked Songs
Mass Appeal
K2
Danny and the Deep Blue Sea
Visiting Mr. Green
The Blue Room
Hughie
The Dumb Waiter
The Zoo Story
Jack and Jill
The Fourposter
Some Things You Need To Know Before the World Ends (A Final Evening with the Illuminati)

Musicals:
Marry Me A Little
I Do! I Do!
Goblin Market

Very good list!  I had forgotton about so many of these.  TALLEY'S FOLLY especially.

I was always sorry I never got to see THE BLUE ROOM (for obvious reasons.)

Actually, I haven't seen that many 2-person plays "on-stage".

HUGHIE w/Jason Robards
THE BOYS OF SUMMER w/George C. Scott & John Cullum
I DO!  I DO! (2 productions - Mary Martin & Robert Preston, Jane Powell & Howard Keel)

I forgot.

I also saw LOVE LETTERS w/Leonard Nimoy & his wife

And, speaking of Tennessee Williams' THE TWO-PERSON PLAY, I handled the publicity for the 99-seat production that was done in Los Angeles during the 1970s.  It starred Scott Wilson & Dorothy Tristan, directed by her husband, John Hancock.  Fred Karlin did the music.

Williams came into down to supervise the production.

The stories I could tell....

end was very predictable. I'm not sure how long they will stay in the 70s or if the

I have my plane reservation here at the office and at 1:30 I will check in on-line for tomorrow's flight. Since Anthony is not around I will go to the airport early tomorrow (Newark Air Train) and sit and read my book until the flight leaves. It's supposed to be a beautiful day and I'll spend it sitting in an airport (my choice, though).

Why not go for a morning walk first, before you spend the rest of the day sitting.  Have a great trip & be sure to take photos.  Hi to Ant.

Perhaps I will take a stroll before getting on the Air Train.

Pictures will be taken I'm sure but they won't be posted until early May when Anthony returns.

I went home for lunch a bit earlier than usual. As I was eating my egg salad sandwich I turned on The View and who should be the guest but the amazing Angela Lansbury. It was a short interview but funny and sweet and charming. She was promoting Blithe Spirit and she did a bit of the little conjuring dance she does in the show. They also showed a clip from Manchurian Candidate.

It was a good lunch.

Naturally, the London Promises was the first thing I went after - MGM doesn't have the rights to license it and they don't know who does because all this stuff is sometimes very convoluted - I explained that UA was a major investor, and that UA paid for the album and that MGM actually has the album masters in hand here in the States, but if they don't have the paperwork that tell them they have the licensing rights they can't license - frustrating, but that's the story.  I've tried twice in the last two months, but the Promises door is shut.

Last night I watched the official DVD release of SIMON KING OF THE WITCHES starring Mr Andrew Prine and Ms Brenda Scott (both late of The Monroes tv series).  Mr Prine and Mr Bruce Kessler the director were interviewed for separate features.

Mr Prine said that he enjoyed working on the film and had a few stories as did Kessler.  Both wondered what happened to blond co-star George Paulsin who they were fond of.  Paulsin is a funny looking kid who had an sweet quality they said....

Well they need to get onto the internet.  Mr Paulsin is the younger brother of High Republican Fund Raiser Georgette Mossbacher.  The few recent photos of him show that he looks much the same, only several pounds heavier.....

Here is a clip of SIMON.....Mr Paulsin shows up at around the 3 minute mark.

The only 2 person show I can think of I cannot remmerb the title of... it was a movie with Alan Alda - it's a man and a woman , who are married to other people, who meet every year for 20 years or more and spend a  weekend together

Same Time Next Year.  It was done on Broadway with a constantly rotating cast.

The show that my late Uncle invested in heavily, expecting a nice tax write-off, only to be dismayed when it was one of the biggest hits of the year.  (Bernie Slade was an old friend).  Kind of a reverse Producers thing.

Andrew Prine married an obnoxious young lady from Oxford, OH, who did summer theatre with me in 1968; she played Kim in the rock-bottom, all-time nadir version of BYE BYE BIRDIE. She was a Talawanda high school girl who thought she was sexy and an actress. I've always wondered how she cornered Andrew.

DR Ben, have a safe trip and a wonderful time!

I love GREATER TUNA and TUNA CHRISTMAS; Joe and Jayston are fantastic guys.

JRAnd, glad you enjoyed LIFE ON MARS. Now you must ketchup with the episodes that you have missed.

That may be a lost cause.

season 1 is already schedule for DVD release!

You mean, the complete series (http://www.amazon.com/Life-Mars-Complete/dp/B001XRLWLU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1238094835&sr=1-1).

Unless you mean the original British first season (http://www.amazon.com/Life-Mars-U-K-John-Simm/dp/B001V7YZHU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1238094892&sr=1-2).

Good Afternoon!

I had a most enjoyable lunch at Five Loaves Cafe (http://www.fiveloavescafe.com).  I ordered a soup and sandwich combo.  For my soup: Tuscan Red Pepper, Chickpea and Olive.  For my sandwich: The Parker.  All very yummy!  And somewhat of a bargain at $7.75.

However, what made the lunch truly "most enjoyable" was the company.  I ended up heading over there with our stage manager and two cast members.  Lots of dish, dish, Dish!

Well, I hit the mother lode as far as mail deliveries. No, no review discs at all, but I got the Blu-ray Bonds (and will probably watch QUANTUM OF SOLACE tonight) and all five of the Warner Archive selections I ordered on Sunday. The widescreen movies that I chose are marked as being anamorphic so that's a great relief making them better than I could have burned for myself with my own DVD burner off TCM.

If I have time tonight, I may put one in just to look at the transfer quality and to make sure it plays in my DVD players.

When I got in from lunch, I watched the last two episodes on the first disc in the second season set of NCIS. Both good episodes, but the killer was very obvious in the second episode, and there was a lot of slapstick bumbling with Tony which I wasn't in the mood for.

The first was the better of the two episodes about a family feud in West Virginia that dragged a Marine helicopter pilot into it. Not much mystery but a more exciting episode.

Then, I watched today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke, Noah, and Luke's real father were in the spotlight today. Interesting new story arc. You know that he's up to no good, but I'm thinking he needs that foundation money and is somehow going to trick Luke to give it to him.

I think "Love Letters" is great if nothing else for its sheer wisdom.  A two character play (actually a reading); pay good many to bring in names; no sets, no costumes; no actual memorization needed as the lines are being read.  Make money.  Go to bank.

Well......

Margaret Shelby an erstwhile minor Hollywood actress with her career mostly behind her, had at age 27 been courted and married a relative of yours, Hugh Fillmore (grandson of Millard C. Fillmore) in 1926.

They were divorced a year later.

Margaret's sister and mother Charlotte were suspects/victims in a sensational case when they were revealed to have both been intimately involved with murdered director William Desmond Taylor.

Margaret's sister was the lovely Mary Miles Minter and her mother Charlotte Shelby - who many people believe to have been the perp in the case.

Very interesting association here, but I have to ask if there is an inspiration for a "Chinatown" plot device here.  Was Charlotte REALLY Margaret's "sister and mother"?  (i.e,. "My sister, my daughter, my sister, my daughter")

I'm assuming Fred has no issues with it being public knowledge, since he posted about it, but his family is evidently helping Kritzerland release some of these great reissues.

That's pretty cool! ;D

JRand, did you buy BOLLYWOOD HORROR COLLECTION vol. 1 when it came out a few years back?

Volumes 2 and 3 are out next week and in May, respectively. I loved volume 1 and although I have seen 3 of the 4 films in the next two volumes (viewed on VCDs with no subtitles) I eagerly await them as they are great, campy fun (and one of the films actually scare the bejeebers out of me a couple of times).

I totally forgot about the wonderful Judy Kaye who played Florence Foster Jenkins in the two hander Souvenier and the other character was Cosmo her pianist and teller of the story.

That was a wonderful show with great performances too.  Funny that I didn't think of it before.

From a number of books I read on this, it sure pointed to Charlotte Selby after all these decades.

Margaret's sister was the lovely Mary Miles Minter and her mother Charlotte Shelby - who many people believe to have been the perp in the case.

One of the sad stories of my life:

Back in the 1970s, I was doing research for a book on the Taylor murder.  Among the people that I interviewed were Mary Miles Minter, Adela Rogers St. Johns and King Vidor.

I met Mr. Vidor at his home office, and he suggested that we collaborate on the book, since he had also been researching the case and had, in fact, been give access to the police files.  [After all, he was a famous director.]

I spoke to Adela Rogers St. Johns about this and she said, "What do you need him for?"

Being young, foolish and with an enlarged ego, I listened to her and turned Vidor down.

A few years later, a writer names James Kirkpatrick did strike a deal with Vidor, and the result was the best-selling A CAST OF KILLERS, probably the definitive book on the Taylor murder.

My book was gone with the wind.

I've just cancelled my order for the Blu-ray "South Pacific".  Have learned they only processed Disc 1, the theatrical version (i.e., the chop job they did on the original roadshow version).  Disc 2, except for an upgraded "extra" or two, is identical to the splendid SD DVD I bought (and raved about) last fall.

I have no interest in ever watching the "butchered" version of this film again.

I've had a very full evening of filmed and televised entertainment.

I began with QUANTUM OF SOLACE. This is the James Bond film made for a generation of ADHD chilren. A series of action set pieces one after another with a plot between that was rather poorly written. The stunt work is excellent, and it's less than two hours so a much easier film to sit through quickly than CASINO ROYALE. This is Bond stripped down to the basics in every way possible: there was one quip, a tiny bit of lovemaking, and lots and lots of action scenes.

Oh, yes, and one of the guys Bond is hunting is named Guy Haines.

I'll have to watch this again in about a week to see if my opinion changes. I did like CASINO ROYALE more the second time I watched it.

The Blu-ray had magnificent video quality, really reference level quality, I thought. The DTS-HD MA sound seemed a little underpumped for such an action-filled spectacle.

Next I put in one of the Warner Archive discs I got today: THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS with Joan Crawford, David Brian, and Dennis Morgan. The picture quality was very good; the sound was a bit hissy and crackly. Still, it is better quality than I would have gotten by recording it off TCM without the TCM corner "bug" and there's a trailer on there, too.

I got about 40 minutes of it watched before stopping it. I'll finish it tomorrow.

I was horrified that Megan was not one of the bottom three. I guess folks are giving her the benefit of the doubt since it was obvious she was still under the effects of the flu, but she was really bad.

I shed no tears for the person send home; he wasn't going to win anyway and wasn't a really strong singer. He was not a wild card person, though, so the public's non-support was a bit of a surprise.

I will don my curmudgeon's cloak for a moment and say that 102 mph on Oregon's 101 is INSANE!!  It is a tiny, two-lane highway for most of its length, with sheer cliffs on one side.  Your friend needs to think about the other drivers on the road.
