I must shave, shower and eat breakfast as I prepare to go to Newark airport for my flight to Madison.

I won't be listening to anything today. I don't have an I-pod or MP3 player. I will read the New York Times, a book and a magazine or two while at the airport and on the plane.

I'm all checked in and everything is ready to go.

Later, gaters.

Uh... Grier.

TOD:  In my car, I am listening to the BK-produced, Larry-Moore-orchestrated Colette Collage.  I couldn't really get into it until "Love Is Not a Sentiment Worthy of Respect"--which I adore--and it all seemed to pick up after that.  Maybe I'll listen to it again from the top on the way home.

And here I am almost through the C's and no Carrie.  I should have BK's marvelous studio cast, but I don't think it's out yet.  Still waiting.

Yes DR TCB I did read Collision Course - probably when I was about 10....the neighbor down the street had a paperback copy that she loaned me.  I had never heard of the Andrea Doria and it was most fascinating.  I borrowed the book so many times, she eventually gave it to me.

DR DRUXY - I got the information about Mr Fillmore from A CAST OF KILLERS which was the best book on the subject.  Did you say you interviewed MMM?  What was that like?

I spent the morning finishing THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS. Joan Crawford hated this movie, and it isn't one of her best ones, it's true, but I've always liked it. I think this is the film where she really started showing her age. Maybe that's why she didn't much care for it.

Earlier in the week I watched HUMORESQUE for the first time.  Very strange movie--Crawford is incredible in some scenes but in others it's as if the director is just indulging her patented schtick.

And I wonder if they hired the same contortionist musician to play violin for John Garfield in this picture as they did for Cary Grant playing the harp in THE BISHOP'S WIFE?

Maybe I should have saved
Those leftover dreams
Funny
But here's that rainy day
Here's that rainy day
They told me about
And I laughed at the thought
That it might turn out this way
Where is that worn out wish
That I threw aside
After it brought my love so near
Funny how love becomes
A cold rainy day
Funny
That rainy day is here
It's funny
How love becomes
A cold rainy day
Funny

Just got a really nice e-mail from someone - a guy who works for AMC.  FJL knows him, because they allowed him to use some music from Starfighter in some episode or program.  So, this guy sometimes does themed screenings for audiences somewhere, comprised of clips.  They did one recently for Sci-Fi musicals.  Here's what he had to say about it:

Besides doing the web-show for AMC I host a monthly screening arranged around a theme.  In December I hosted Sci-Fi Musicals -- featuring numbers from Forbidden Zone, The Apple, even the Carpenters TV Special "Space Encounters".   But hands-down the audience favorite was "I Want to Eat Your Face".  It killed.  I grew up watching the movie on VHS so I never had the pleasure of seeing it with a crowd.  When the clip ended (after Dr. Stark says "What were you expecting Rogers & Hart?!") someone in the audience said "Where can I buy that movie?"

After the show, a writer from The Daily Show came up to me and said that he was amazed by your song.  "It was supposed to be funny. And it was funnny."  (As opposed to all the unintentionally funny clips we saw, or the ones that tried to be funny, but weren't.)

I will don my curmudgeon's cloak for a moment and say that 102 mph on Oregon's 101 is INSANE!!  It is a tiny, two-lane highway for most of its length, with sheer cliffs on one side.  Your friend needs to think about the other drivers on the road.

While most of the articles I've read keep raising the expected crest of the river, I just read one that said it is slowing & might not go as high.  I can't find anything else confirming this.  I think breaking the record is enough, it can stop rising now.

TOD:

Lots of Cheyenne episodes on the DVR as well as a 1952 movie titled THE PACE THAT THRILLS.

On DVD I have more ROOM 222 and THAT GIRL...a great combo!

All you need are some episodes of THE FLYING NUN and BEWITCHED and it's 1969 all over again!

Oooh!!!

I believe the Brooklyn Museum of Art will be one of my first stops when I get back to New York City...

The Reluctant Impressionist - "Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings From Paris to the Sea" (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/27/arts/design/27cail.html)

If I saw someone doing that to my hardwood floors, I would go to my bedroom closet to get my shot gun.

If I didn't own a shot gun, I would promptly go out and purchase one.

I think I might even join the NRA.

Well, then, the artist should have painted the floor that way!  Why did he paint a perfectly good looking hardwood floor getting scrapped up?  And for that matter, why are these guys scraping up stripes?  If they are going to re-do the floor, why aren't they scraping up all of the finish?

Well, in any case, if the painter's intent was to invoke feelings of rage and violence, he succeeded.

I think a better title would have been "The Last Site I Recall Seeing Before I Blanked Out and Came To at the Sink Washing the Blood Off My Hands".

They're upset that the release does not have its own thread where they can check for a release date--they're unwilling to "dig and dig" (I'm quoting one of the confused) through our piquant commentaries to find relevant information.  I had been telling them to come here since you always pre-announce things here, and at least some of your previous releases sold out quickly (though if I'm reading your email from last night correctly, you don't expect that to happen on this one).  So personally I hope some obsessed dealer buys 999 copies (leaving 1 for me) and they're all out in the cold, due to relying on the person who claims he's the sole source of information on the release.

That's pretty darned cool!

That's exactly right, but this particular release has a special tangential connection to another group that I (used to, anyway) post to quite regularly and BK had mentioned that they might want to know about it in advance as well.  As I just posted over there, no good deed goes unpunished.  One of them just called BK a "fool" for "letting things sell out", BTW.  Not very nice and making me unwilling to really waste my time there anymore.
Title: Re: THE SHOW THAT GOT AWAY
Post by: bk on March 27, 2009, 01:03:14 PM
Please pass this on to whoever called me a "fool":

Dear Foolcaller:

When we do limited editions it is because that is what the licensing contract calls for and that is the number we're comfortable doing - I know it's a radical thought, but Kritzerland does occasionally like to make some money and these limited editions have almost ALL sold out at 1000 units, making us a nice profit - the point being they would NOT sell out at 1500 or 2000 units - that's been proven time and again for small niche labels like us.  Whether the Baja reissue is limited or not I have not decided, as that album is a whole other ball of wax.  I'm excited about putting the Baja New Deal album out with quite a few interesting bonus tracks, but I have to tell you that the interest of this Krayola (sic - it's Crayola) pusher wanes with each and every "fool" comment that's passed along.  This project is special to me and I'm not rushing it - the source material on the bonus tracks requires TLC (tender loving care, for those who don't know), and I'm having David Wechter and Cissy Wechter each write things for the booklet.  Right now, of course, we've been issuing titles that actually sell well, and while I hope and pray that putting out New Deal is successful for us, I have go guarantees that it will even make its money back - as you might imagine, these releases are not free.

Sincerely,
The Fool

Next, I watched the men's figure skating final recorded off Oxygen last night. Evan Lysechek had the cleanest skate, unquestionably but Patrick Chan's style is so smooth and effortless that next year's Olympic gold medal is going to be a real shootout between those two, Brian Joubert from France and Johnny Weir if he's healthy and his head is screwed on straight. (Weir actually is the only one of this group who can compete with Patrick style-wise, but his moods are so erratic that his skating can br effortless or disastrous.)

Next I rewatched Adam Lambert's sensational rendition of "Tracks of My Tears" from Wednesday night's IDOL. Every year, one performance during the season seems to come out of nowhere and define the season. I'd be very surprised if this one isn't the standout song from this season. We have a long way to go, of course, but it was so pure and so unique, I think it might be unmatchable. Doesn't mean he's going to win, but it is still the year's best performance thus far.

Are we supposed to know what you're referring to?  Did I miss it?

The "fool" fool, i.e. the clown who called BK a fool for allowing product to "sell out."

Topic of the Day:  right now, I'm listening to the official original Broadway cast recording of Shrek

Tonight, I'm going to see a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar.  I have a season ticket for next Wednesday, but a friend of mine and her husband don't want to see this (they saw another production just last year and are too busy this month) so they gave me their tickets. ;D

Well, then, the artist should have painted the floor that way!  Why did he paint a perfectly good looking hardwood floor getting scrapped up?  And for that matter, why are these guys scraping up stripes?  If they are going to re-do the floor, why aren't they scraping up all of the finish?

The artist was obviously trying to evoke symbolically the "prison" of the paradox of modern life.

That painting was turned into a movie in 2007 by Claude Lelouch and is entitled ... TRACKS! ;)

I really have to laugh at the other site--their busy beaver Mods first insist they're the only source of information about things, and then when things devolve to a point where they can't maintain their egotistical b.s., they just as hurriedly delete all the posts about it.   It's news control at its finest.  ;)

Last night I watched a movie on dvd.  I was very surprised to find that Guy Haines was mentioned in the movie.  I watched Daniel Craig in QUANTUM OF SOLACE, which I sorta enjoyed.  The new Bond franchise is still finding its footing, but, I think things will improve dramatically with the next film.

And thanks to the catering operation next door to the rehearsal studios, I just had a wonderful dinner comprised of Potato & Herb Encrusted Tilapia and Green Beans.  They just started a home-delivery and pick-up service called Thyme Savors (http://www.thymesavors.com).  They dropped off some "promotional meals" at the office.  The only thing better than Tasty food is Free andTasty food.  -And quite healthy too.  -Which is a nice and proper "change" from the junk food binge I went on yesterday.

We were all set to depart tomorrow (Saturday), funding was supposed to be done yesterday, then around 10:30 am yesterday, we got a call that there was a minor snag.

I can't begin to tell you how stressful yesterday and much of today has been, but now it looks like funding will take place on Monday or Tuesday, so we're figuring on leaving Thursday.

If any of you know the "funding angel, " please put in a good word for us.

I was feeling pretty good this morning, but by afternoon my stomach was bugging me again.  I went to Da Kao and had some Vietnamese chicken noodle soup. They put ginger in the broth and that seemed to help, but I really didn't feel up to par, so after a visit to a couple clients in jail and a trip to Sam's Club (it's fairly close to the jail) I came home.   I'm feeling better again.  Don't know what's up with my stomach. I NEED TO BE IN LOVE

Richard Carpenter & John Bettis & Albert Hammond

The hardest thing I've ever done is keep believing
There's someone in this crazy world for me
The way that people come and go through temporary lives
My chance could come and I might never know

I used to say "No promises, let's keep it simple"
But freedom only helps you say goodbye
It took a while for me to learn that nothing comes for free
The price I paid is high enough for me

*  I know I need to be in love
I know I've wasted too much time
I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's what I'll find

+  So here I am with pockets full of good intentions
But none of them will comfort me tonight
I'm wide awake at 4 a.m. without a friend in sight
I'm hanging on a hope but I'm all right

 repeat *
 repeat +
 repeat *

We don't have a Costco.  I actually got it at Sam's Club.  If I had just bought the toner or the ink it wouldn't have seemed so bad, but I got 2 of those value packs that each have 5 ink cartridges  and a 12A toner cartridge for my laser printer. So, it was the combo that really floored me.

I am an emotional puddle right now and an extremely happy boy - I just heard the Two For The Seesaw master - it's incredible-sounding, and the clarity of it is just breathtaking - I mean, this thing was recorded in 1962 and sounds better than any recording they make today.  And the score - I just am addicted to it and cannot get enough of it - it's so beautifully written and orchestrated, and even though the three soloists, trumpet, sax, and trombone are spectacular, its those darned Previn French horns that get me every time.  No one writes French horns like Previn - they're as much a Previn trademark as his jazz stuff.  In fact, the first instruments you hear are French horns.  If you're on the fence about this one, don't be - for me, it's the soundtrack release of the year, and NOT because I'M putting it out.  It's now on the fast track to completion - master is being sent to the plant tomorrow, and I shall now finish the liner notes by Sunday - the credits and track titles are done, and I'm getting the designer most of what he needs tonight.

I don't normally buy soundtrack albums but I will take the plunge with this one and I will put my order in for Illya Darkung today.

How much is it again with shipping?

On a somewhat related tangent, I must report that the new Cherry-OLA twofer which contains Baden Powell's incredible Afro-Sambas has the same dropouts that plagued the previous Elenco/Forma release.  I know that will disappoint many of you.  ;)

We had spaghetti three times at our house last week.

I just have to share this:

If you are a FOLLIES fan. Here is rare footage of Gene Nelson singing and dancing The Right Girl. It also gives you a look at Michael Bennett's choreography. I just wish the film quality was better. it looks many generations duped down

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFxygAHcNGM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFxygAHcNGM)

And Alexis Smith doing the Story of Lucy and Jessie. The music isn't completely synch correctly as there is a jump in the footage. But you still get the idea.

Good Evening!

Rehearsal went well.  It was mainly a blocking and choreography rehearsal.  And tomorrow's all-day rehearsal will also concentrate on choreography.  -I get my "vocal clean up" rehearsals next week.

In any case...

I watched this last night and mentioned both Guy Haines and the film's rather dour tone not sitting well with me. The action stuff was all impressive but too much of it and not enough development in other areas like characterization and even lightness on occasion. Too much vengeance with no letup can get rather oppressive.

My plans for the evening were to watch the Blu-ray of GOLDFINGER and then settle in with the women's short program at the world championships followed by DOLLHOUSE.

About 20 minutes into GOLDFINGER, there's a knock at the front door, and the UPS man is bringing me my first review discs in three weeks: the Blu-rays of BEDTIME STORIES, DOUBT, and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (a new special edition).

So, since I had started GOLDFINGER, I finished watching it. The Blu-ray looks splendid with gorgeous color and sharpness. The repurposed DTS-HD MA sound is about as good as it can be being taken from the original mono tracks.

Forever and always my favorite James Bond movie.

Then, I put in BEDTIME STORIES. It's a cute family film. Yes, it has a bit of the usual Adam Sandler crudeness (snot, fart, and ass jokes), but they're kept to a minimum, and some of the fantasies were really fun, especially when aspects of them start to come true in his real life. Always a nice little twist on how those outrageous fanasies can have a real-life component.

What surprised me, though, was the skimpy set of extras with the movie. Of course, because the bonus features were so slim, I was able to do the entire film in only part of the evening tonight, but I was really expecting a more feature-rich package.

Went to my designer's and we did the Seesaw cover, which is basically the LP cover spruced up just a wee bit.  Since I have the conductor scores, we copied a few of them for use in the booklet, which I think will be fun.  He'll leave room for some photos (I have a lobby card set on its way) and he'll put the film's original poster art on the back somewhere - it's more colorful than the simple LP cover, but I wanted to be accurate to the LP release on the cover.

Made big bucks here!!
