It's forty minutes later, and it still seems too early to be up.  :)

Lots of tax-office stuff, as usual on a tax-season Saturday, but I am determined to get to see FINIAN'S RAINBOW tonight as scheduled.  If it weren't a limited run, I'd just wait until after tax season, but it's this weekend or never for seeing that.

Good TOD

Something i will have to go back and look it over but I think and a lot of people will agree (Even though I wasn't there) that 1939 was a very good year

I have seen the following over the years

Gone With The Wind
The Wizard of Oz
Goodbye Mr. Chips
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
Wuthering Heights
Ninotchka
Stagecoach
Dark Victory
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Young Mr. Lincoln
The Hound of the Baskervilles
The Women
Destry Rides Again

and others that I know are good but I have never seen
Intermezzo: A Love Story
Of Mice and Men
Only Angels Have Wings
The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex

But I think I will have to go with 1964. This was the first year that I was taken to a movie theater to see a movie which was Mary Poppins and over the years I have seen many of the other films that came out in 1964

Mary Poppins
My Fair Lady
The Pink Panther
The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao
Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte
Zorba the Greek
Becket
Night of the Inguana
Topkapi
The Unsinkable Molly Brown
Dr. Strangelove
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger (I think this came out the same year)
Fail Safe

and
The Pumpkin Eater (I have never seen this)
Seance on a Wet Afternoon (I think I have seen this)

Good morning, DRs.

I have dropped off Zach for his quarterly grooming.  That undercoat gets so thick, and he starts to look very shaggy by the time his next appointment rolls around.

Tonight, the synagogue where my DH plays is hosting a cabaret night featuring Jonathan Schwartz, who still carries the banner for American Standards with his weekend radio shows on WNYC and XM Satellite.  He is also the son of composer Arthur Schwartz.  The Steinway piano for this evening's festivities is from our very own living room - it was picked up yesterday morning and shall be returned to us next week.

Saturday morning greetings!  I am waiting for a call from AppleCare, which I scheduled last night, for help transferring my iTunes library to my new computer.  Last night I thought I also needed help moving my Safari bookmarks and my email address book, but figured that out myself using a flash drive.

God morning, all! I slept 11 hours last night, and I'm feeling ready to kick ass. At noon, I'm meeting a bunch from the Castrecl for lunch on 50th and Broadway (I think that's right; I'll check before I walk down) and then tonight I'm seeing Encores! production of FINIAN'S RAINBOW which I look forward to enormously; the reviews this morning were glowing, and I sat in tears through the orchestra reading because the score is so glorious.

Beyond that, I'm tidying the mess left from 6 days of total work and no housekeeping, and tomorrow morning I'll mop and do laundry. I think after luncheon, I'll run down to Toyland for some vocal score edits. Tomorrow, besides th laundry, I've got a lot of rewrites on my main report to accomplish.

BK, not all the VICKI CRISTINA BARCELONA reviews were raves; the NEW YORK magazine review disliked the movie and had your complaint: twenty-somethings talking like 70 year-old men. I can still remember the early 1980s when actors in the Drama Book Shop spoke reverentially about auditions for "Woody's new project." Oy!

And I just booked the Hotel Rouge for my 3-day trek to the Orchestration Symposium in DC at the Library of Congress. Hooray! I may possibly be on a panel but nothing's settled yet.

Jrand, I thought Penelope Cruz was okay, but I think I saw performances that I liked better, although I can't remember what they were.  And I really did not like the actor who played the husband of Rebecca Hall - I liked her okay and Scarlett's character was just too annoying for me to like her much.

I was supposed to get VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA to review on Blu-ray. It was assigned to me, but Lionsgate never sent it, so I haven't seen it. After reading the mostly good reviews, I was looking forward to it, but it didn't come, and now I'll just wait for it to show up on paycable.

My work project today will be KING BABY, a stand-up comedy act from Jim Gaffigan that's premiering on Comedy Central tomorrow night and the DVD to be released on Tuesday. He's usually pretty funny (and a fine actor when he does roles on various TV shows, not always comedies), so this should be a pleasant way to spend an hour this evening.

Quite a disappointing showing from our young female figure skaters at the world championships, and it's not looking promising for us to have three women represent the US at the Olympics next year. After the short program, our ladies ranked 7th and 14th, so neither will be skating in the final tier of skaters. We have to hope they both do very well and that some of the top ladies have meltdowns that will allow our girls to pull up enough to qualify us for three placements on the Olympic team.

bk certainly made a grand case for 1962 as a wonderful film year (let's not forget THE MUSIC MAN and GYPSY were part of that year), and no one can argue that 1939 and 1964 were filled with wonderful films.

I also love 1948:

THE SEARCH
TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE
HAMLET
THE SNAKE PIT
JOHNNY BELINDA
JOAN OF ARC
THE RED SHOES
I REMEMBER MAMA
SITTING PRETTY
SORRY WRONG NUMBER
KEY LARGO
RED RIVER
THE NAKED CITY
A FOREIGN AFFAIR
THE PALEFACE
ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS
EASTER PARADE
THE PIRATE
PORTRAIT OF JENNIE
ALL MY SONS
CALL NORTHSIDE 777
COMMAND DECISION
MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE
THAT LADY IN ERMINE
FORT APACHE
RACHEL AND THE STRANGER
WHEN MY BABY SMILES AT ME
THE EMPEROR WALTZ

EARTH VS THE SPIDER

ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE

HOT CAR GIRL

ATTACK OF THE 50 FT WOMAN

HONG KONG CONFIDENTIAL

WOLF DOG

THE RESTLESS YEARS

NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST

QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE

HIGH SCHOOL HELL CATS

ZIMBO

and so many more...the only year that comes close in such goodness is 1957.

I think he's bringing an accompanist and singing.  And maybe discoursing.

Well, I'm doing my bit to stimulate the economy, too.  I've bought a new car.  The dealership is trying to acquire new-ish cars to resell, so they made me an offer I couldn't refuse.  I'm replacing my 3 year old Toyota Camry [50,000+ miles] with a brand new Camry.  And keeping the same payment.

DR Ginny - I hope AppleCare is able to walk you through the transfer of your iTunes library.  I would have chimed in yesterday, but I got sidelined by my 4-hour malady.  -It is sort of a simple procedure, but it's also one of those things that if you don't check all the right boxes and keep track of where is and will be going, it can get a little convoluted.  -Do you have an iPod? That makes things much easier.  Otherwise, too many cables and/or CDs can be involved.

If you join the Playbill.com club (for free), you can click HERE (http://www.playbill.com/celebritybuzz/article/65190.html) for an article about the whole concert.  It's from 1996, so that's probably why you have to join their "club"...to get archived articles.  I made a complete 2-disc recording, also!

At one point in the concert, there are three songs that the article says are in a specific order, but one of the CDs (I forget which) has them in reverse order.  I left them in that reversed order so I didn't have muck around with that and they were otherwise all together anyway.

See below. :)

Congrats on the new car, DAW!  In June, my car will be 11 years old! :o

Or...I could just post the order that I had saved!

ACT ONE (order according to the booklet essay):

1. Overture (1)
2. We're in the Money / Pennies from Heaven (2)
3. If You Were the Only Boy (in the World) (3)

4. Broadway Baby [1]
5. No One Is Alone [2]
6. Sooner or Later [3]

7. Unexpected Song (4)
8. I Never Thought I'd Break (7)
9. Other Lady (6)
10. The Hills of Shiloh / Faithless Love (5)

11. Making Love Alone [4]
12. Time Heals Everything [5]
13. Raining in My Heart [6]
14. Some People [7]

ACT TWO:

1. (They Asked Me Why) I Believe in You (8)
2. Johanna [8]
3. Happiness [9]
4. Hello Little Girl / Any Moment [10]
5. There Won't Be Trumpets [11]

6. Later (9)
7. You Could Drive a Person Crazy [12]
8. Not a Day Goes By [13]

9. With So Little To Be Sure Of (10)
10. Children Will Listen (11)

11. Being Alive [14]
12. Move On [15]

13. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (12)

The songs in italics are from the first CD and the songs in BOLD are from the 2nd CD.  The numbers in the brackets or parentheses are the track numbers from the respective CDs.  As you can see on the first disc, starting after "Unexpected Song," the CD reversed the song order as they were listed in the article.  I don't know if the article listed them in the wrong order or if they really switched the order for the CD.  Either way, I kept those songs in the CD order for my complete version:

7. Unexpected Song (4)
8. The Hills of Shiloh / Faithless Love (5)
9. Other Lady (6)
10. I Never Thought I'd Break (7)

GWTW a stinker? Darlin, the only stinker when we were at the malt shop in 1939 was that attack of gas you had after too many onion rings!

Here's an interesting question.

[I don't believe it has been asked before.  Or, if it was, I'm not aware of it.]

Did Frank Sinatra really win an Academy Award for FROM HERE TO ETERNITY?

 ???

I'm asking because I just watched a clip on YouTube (see below) of Mercedes McCambridge announcing him as the winner, and she never looks in the envelope.

That's just as I remembered it when I watched it on TV over 50 years ago.

Anyway, take a look for yourself:

DR Ginny - I hope AppleCare is able to walk you through the transfer of your iTunes library.  I would have chimed in yesterday, but I got sidelined by my 4-hour malady.  -It is sort of a simple procedure, but it's also one of those things that if you don't check all the right boxes and keep track of where is and will be going, it can get a little convoluted.  -Do you have an iPod? That makes things much easier.  Otherwise, too many cables and/or CDs can be involved.

DR Jose - yes, it took 3 phone calls (2 Brads and 1 Nicole), but my iTunes library is now installed on my MacBook.  We did use my iPod as an external hard drive and it's fully restored, too.

I am very impressed with AppleCare.  For the final steps, I went online, stated my problem, and my phone rang almost immediately (it was Nicole).

Hope you're feeling better!

Listening to Diana Krall's just about to be released new CD, Quiet Nights.  Beautiful charts by Claus Ogerman and production by Tommy LiPuma, but this woman puts me to sleep.  She just thinks that this breathy thing is so sexy and it's so boring after one song - she flatlines every song - no variety, no nuance, no color, just breath and trying to do what far lesser singers did so effortlessly - singers like Astrud Gilberto and her ilk.  Her phrasing is so weird - just not a fan.  How these people cross over and sell albums is really a mystery to me and always has been.  It's a real 60s album without any of the soul - strictly paint by numbers instead of an original painting.

If I want "breathy", Peggy Lee did it better, and she knew about phrasing!

Miss Krall should stick to piano playing!

BK, have you heard recent CDs of either Janis Siegel or Cheryl Bentyne?  They're the two women of The Manhattan Transfer and they have talent and skill as musicians...they're not just singers.  I highly recommend checking both of them out. :D

Of course, I'm biased. ;) I've been a fan of TMT since I was in high school and have seen them in concert many times, the last time was just a couple of weeks ago!

If I  had to chose a Peters, it would be Roberta! ;)

But then, nobody's asking me! :)

Didn't Roberta Peters appear on an episode of "Columbo" - or some other detective series - during the 1970's?  I seem to remember her singing "Sempre Libera" in a recital setting (with a pianist).

I don't believe that Roberta Peters ever had a pianis.

Was it DR DtM who asked about the violin fingering double for John Garfield in HUMORESQUE.

Anyway, Cary Grant's harp playing in The Bishop's Wife was a double exposure/process screen shot, I think.

Oscar Levant wrote in one of his books, that when filming on HUMERESQUE - The difficult violin technique was done in a tight shot, with one violinist handling the bow and another the fingering - their arms thrust through a specially built tuxedo....and he played a dummy piano while a famous female pianist played the notes offscreen so that he could keep time....  After a couple of shots, Levant stood up and announced:  "Jesus Christ, we sound great.  The five of us ought to go out on a concert tour!"

What an interesting evening I've had tonight.

I began by watching an episode of NCIS from the second season box set. NCIS stumbles on a Mafia body dump filled with corpses. Not much mystery but a fun episode.

Next I watched KING BABY, the Jim Gaffigan comedy special that premieres tomorrow night on Comedy Central before the DVD (with extended footage) comes out on Tuesday.

It was very funny. I like his reserved, quiet kind of clean stand-up. He doesn't eat the audience or go for the jugular like some other comics do.

He does five or six minutes on just the topic of bacon, and it's hysterical. I thoroughly enjoyed the set.
Title: Re: NOTES FOR A LOVELY SATURDAY
Post by: Matt H. on March 28, 2009, 08:28:45 PM
Then I watched the bonus features on the disc. This included three episodes from his animated web series and four episodes of his faux-nature series.

There were several interviews (one was a half hour with an XM-Sirius radio/video DJ), and a series of comic promos for his last two stand-up tours sponsored by Comedy CEntral.

Much of this stuff was very entertaining to watch.

When I went back down, I had time to watch one more NCIS episode, this one concerning attempts on the life of a female marine and her family. I figured out the murderer (well, the surprise one) before the identity was revealed. Good show for the regulars, especially Tony (Michael Weatherly).

Then I watched the finals of the ladies' figure skating world championship. Rachel Flatt was able to skate her way into fifth place thanks to a good performance from her and mediocre to poor performances from two of the ladies in the top tier. The lovely South Korean skater blew the rest of the group away, however, making it not much of a contest. Still I enjoyed it.

I was FURIOUS with NBC for not showing Alissa Cizny's free skate, especially since they commented that she had done so well. (She came up from 14th to 11th place.) And, the show had 10 minutes to spare at the end where Dick Button and Michelle Kwan had to improvise comments just to fill in time. Alissa's performance could have been shown then.

I was thinking of you not once, but twice, today, Mike.  I'm reviewing the BD of The Story of India, the recent PBS doc with Michael Wood.  Lots of Bollywood film clips, used ironically at times.  But I also got the BD of Saawariya as my first freebie from Sony Rewards.  I had reviewed the SD-DVD ages ago but had gotten rid of it in the meantime.  The BD looks fabulous, but it has a really funny English soundtrack--instead of a dubbed version, it's people reading the subtitles while the original Hindi soundtrack still plays in the background.  IIRC, the DVD only had the original soundtrack.

Or...I could just post the order that I had saved!

ACT ONE (order according to the booklet essay):

1. Overture (1)
2. We're in the Money / Pennies from Heaven (2)
3. If You Were the Only Boy (in the World) (3)

4. Broadway Baby [1]
5. No One Is Alone [2]
6. Sooner or Later [3]

7. Unexpected Song (4)
8. I Never Thought I'd Break (7)
9. Other Lady (6)
10. The Hills of Shiloh / Faithless Love (5)

11. Making Love Alone [4]
12. Time Heals Everything [5]
13. Raining in My Heart [6]
14. Some People [7]

ACT TWO:

1. (They Asked Me Why) I Believe in You (8)
2. Johanna [8]
3. Happiness [9]
4. Hello Little Girl / Any Moment [10]
5. There Won't Be Trumpets [11]

6. Later (9)
7. You Could Drive a Person Crazy [12]
8. Not a Day Goes By [13]

9. With So Little To Be Sure Of (10)
10. Children Will Listen (11)

11. Being Alive [14]
12. Move On [15]

13. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (12)

The songs in italics are from the first CD and the songs in BOLD are from the 2nd CD.  The numbers in the brackets or parentheses are the track numbers from the respective CDs.  As you can see on the first disc, starting after "Unexpected Song," the CD reversed the song order as they were listed in the article.  I don't know if the article listed them in the wrong order or if they really switched the order for the CD.  Either way, I kept those songs in the CD order for my complete version:

7. Unexpected Song (4)
8. The Hills of Shiloh / Faithless Love (5)
9. Other Lady (6)
10. I Never Thought I'd Break (7)

Thank you for taking the time to post this. Very kind of you.

Our Borders is also cutting our cd and dvd stock dramatically.  I believe we'll be one of the stores carrying basically the top twenty-five.  :(

PITTSBURGH, the mockumentary is, as far as THE MUSIC MAN is concerned, a documentary; the rest is dreadfully unfunny, but, as a Pittsburgher, the on location shooting is fabulous.

FINIAN'S RAINBOW in a word: spectacular.

What a brilliant piece of whimsy and social commentary. The idiot poster on AllThatChat who complained the book was "creaky" once again showed what small minds adolescent know-it-alls reared on too much of the new school of musicals possess. I'd kill to see a new show with the wit, bite, commentary and fantastic score of FINIAN's RAINBOW. The only drawback was the usually wonderful Mr Philip Bosco who failed rather spectacularly as the bigoted senator who must become a black man to find his humanity. Surely they saw better character actors for the Huey Long role? I think Walter Bobbie might have been fantastic casting. He's funny.

Otherwise, a great cast and topnotch direction from Warren Carlyle, who is - I think - the real thing at Encores! and not a fraud like Susan Shulman or Kathleen Marshall.

I got some nice things in the mail today all the way from India. As some of you know I am a big fan of Bollywood (!) and I have even begun collecting Bollywood movie memorabilia. It is quite difficult to find posters and such that are in good condition as the humidity and heat tends to turn old paper products to dust after so many years....but I have lucked onto a couple of people in India who have scoured the countryside (and their basements) for some nice items for me.

And here are a few of them that just arrived...

From the 1920s and 1930s...

They could easily have done without several of the ladies' skates.  They did, however, show Lysacek's gold medal men's performance in its entirety in the show's final five minutes.

Or...I could just post the order that I had saved!

ACT ONE (order according to the booklet essay):

1. Overture (1)
2. We're in the Money / Pennies from Heaven (2)
3. If You Were the Only Boy (in the World) (3)

4. Broadway Baby [1]
5. No One Is Alone [2]
6. Sooner or Later [3]

7. Unexpected Song (4)
8. I Never Thought I'd Break (7)
9. Other Lady (6)
10. The Hills of Shiloh / Faithless Love (5)

11. Making Love Alone [4]
12. Time Heals Everything [5]
13. Raining in My Heart [6]
14. Some People [7]

ACT TWO:

1. (They Asked Me Why) I Believe in You (8)
2. Johanna [8]
3. Happiness [9]
4. Hello Little Girl / Any Moment [10]
5. There Won't Be Trumpets [11]

6. Later (9)
7. You Could Drive a Person Crazy [12]
8. Not a Day Goes By [13]

9. With So Little To Be Sure Of (10)
10. Children Will Listen (11)

11. Being Alive [14]
12. Move On [15]

13. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (12)

The songs in italics are from the first CD and the songs in BOLD are from the 2nd CD.  The numbers in the brackets or parentheses are the track numbers from the respective CDs.  As you can see on the first disc, starting after "Unexpected Song," the CD reversed the song order as they were listed in the article.  I don't know if the article listed them in the wrong order or if they really switched the order for the CD.  Either way, I kept those songs in the CD order for my complete version:

7. Unexpected Song (4)
8. The Hills of Shiloh / Faithless Love (5)
9. Other Lady (6)
10. I Never Thought I'd Break (7)

Thank you for taking the time to post this. Very kind of you.

You're welcome...but it took no time at all.  I made my own complete CD with a booklet right after the second CD was released, and saved the original Word document and Playbill article link.  I just went right to it, copied it all and posted. :)

Good evening. I just returned from a lovely soiree. Other guests in attendance include a count, an astronaut, and a few generals.

The Count, The Astronaut, and A Few Generals - that's the title of my next novel.

So...earlier tonight, I ushered for a touring production of Gilligan's Karaoke Island - The Musical. ::) Well...the actors were pretty good.  Their voices were for the most part, very good (Ginger was probably the weak link, vocally, but she wasn't bad at all).  Otherwise, everyone had great energy (especially Gilligan).  The Professor was VERY good looking without being too distracting. ;)

Before the show, I talked with the house manager and she said that their original contract was to have two live musicians and the rest of the "band" be canned.  She said that at some point within the last couple of months, they (the tour producers) said that there would be no live musicians!  Judy (the aforementioned house manager) said that the general manager of the Washington Center got in on it and the two live musicians were in the pit.  I must say that it probably didn't help much.  The "orchestrations" were very simple and not very interesting, at all.  With canned music, you'd think that it would sound fuller...more exciting...better...but no.  An evening of not-so-good karaoke on a shoestring budget does not a good show make.

Otherwise, the songs and script...what can I say about the songs and script...amateurish.  I guess it fit with the intellectual level of the original TV show, but I really wish that it was much better than the TV show.  There was not a lot of reaction from the audience during the first act other than polite applause, although there were a couple of funny moments (not more than a few out-loud laughs).  At the beginning of the intermission, the audience in the lobby was somewhat quiet which indicated to me that "if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything."  I'm sure some people left and didn't come back.  But during the second act and the curtain call, there seemed to be more applause/laughs...but it just didn't "feel" right.  To me, it really seemed like they brought in their backstage crew to help the rest of the audience laugh.  It just didn't feel natural. :-\

Those are just my observations.  One person's opinions.  No one else's.  Just my 2¢.

And don't get me started on the alien.  No kidding...there's a green alien from another planet in the show...it's literally a no-brainer. :P
