Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a cabaret unto themselves, and now it is time for you to post until the cabaret cows come home. They used to have a girlfriend known as Elsie (the cow).

And the word of the day is: TETCHY!
-
And a happy haineshisway.com birthday to SteveO.

If life is a cabaret, then Professor BK should be your life coach.
This was quite obvious after two hours in the presence of said prof, who last night at Los Angeles City College imparted wise words for performers dreaming of one day staging their own nightery act.
Here, in no particular order, are six cabaret sins:
--Don’t be smarmy, slick or oily. Professor BK, and the audience, will hate you.
--Don’t take a drink of water between the set-up of a joke and your punchline.
--Don’t bring up your affliction. “The audience,” Professor BK warns, “does not want to know about your polio.”
--Do not attempt to wow the crowd with trivia like, “This song was arranged by Peter Matz.” Instead, draw the audience in by telling them what the song means to you.
--For god’s sake, don’t point. Professor BK just might cut off the offending finger.
--Do not, under any circumstances, hire a musical director who smells.
-
bk, congratulations on a successful presentation!
I am also very pleased about your ambitious plans for Kritzerland! :)

The only one in recent memory would be Gordon Joseph Weiss going on for Bronson Pinchot in the revival of Sly Fox. I was disappointed but GJW was very good in it and at the end of evening it was Bronson Who?
Not really but I was trying to imagine him in the role and found it difficult to do so.
Mr. Weiss was nominated for a Tony Award for an earlier performance in Ghetto.

Happy Birthday DR ANN.

Most distressed to hear about the quality of these Warner Bros DVD's. I hadn't ordered any yet, but was thinking about it. I guess it's a way for them to get 19.99 a title, and not have to worry about doing any clean up on them.
-
Looking forward to photos from the Cabaret workshop of course. And such good news about Kritzerland. Yes, when I order on the inner web, I very rarely travel to a site and get just the ONE thing I wanted, I usually look around and find something else, too.
-
Happy Happy Birthday, DR Ann!
I KNOW you'll have cake! And we want photos of it!

TOD:
Many times for touring companies I have seen the standby or understudy go on - and I am sure they are fine. I don't notice anything, although I watch those characters to see how excited the new guy is.....it could be his FIRST time!!
Several years ago.....my friend Kurt asked me to go see AIDA - the Tim Rice/Elton John/David Henry Hwang version. I said okay.....he had an extra ticket and it only cost me $20. We had a nice lunch and went to the matinee at the Murat.
A big sign and a paper in the program told us that understudy Felicia Boswell would be playing the title role instead of Paulette Ivory. Okay.
Well....I really liked the show....the costumes were beautiful, the lighting was spectacular, and the story was interesting. AND Mickey Dolenz played the father of Radames....sort of. I just really liked it more than I ever thought I would. And Boswell was wonderful. All of the leads were. They included Jeremy (RENT) Kushnier and Lisa Brescia.
After the show we went to a bar and had some drinks and talked about the show....a couple of hours later, we were walking back to the car. We stopped on this traffic island in the middle of the street near the theatre and were still talking about the show. Kurt asked this older couple who were also standing there if they were going to see the show and they said yes. We both told them it was great and they would love it....we couldn't say enough about it.
Turns out they had two GREAT mezzanine seats that were going to waste and they handed them over if we wanted to see the show again. So of course we DID!!!
That night we saw Paulette Ivory. She had some kind of Caribbean accent and AIDA had lost all of the charm that Felicia Boswell brought to the show. Ivory landed NONE of the jokes that Boswell had brought the house down with, and her singing was a kind of crazy American Idol/Minnie Ripperton/Mariah Carey wail and howl that made the songs unintelligible. The audience response that night was tepid even for the curtain call....and the afternoon show with Boswell had been a standing ovation!
What a difference. I hope Felicia Boswell gets to Broadway....if she hasn't already. She is the real deal.

! ! ! ! ! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR ANN OF THE BEGUILING EYES ! ! ! ! !
-
Good morning, all! I am still recovering from last week's ordeal and I'm veery tired. I slept in for an extra hour but I still am quite groggy.
Today, BABES IN TOYLAND continues. I also want to drag out my vocal score to Kurt Weill's KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY and follow the score with a recording of a peformance from February 2009 at Toronto Operetta Theatre. Wish I had known about it so I could have made the trip to Toronto. The libretto is wonderful and, it seems to me, very timely: at this moment in the recording, governor Peter Stuyvesant has just told our leading man "the government can do no wrong" as his new order appropriates all rights of the New Amsterdam councillors, a corrupt and stupid group guilty of at least three crimes: selling whiskey and firearms to the Indians and copulation with the same Native American group. If the governor or the councillors succeed in hanging the rebelious leading man, how can he become the First American and marry Tina Tienhoven, who's engaged to Stuyvesant. We haven't even got to the Act Two Indian attack from "The Algonquins from Harlem" (that's the name of the number!).
-
!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to Our DR Ann !!!!!!!!!!!!
-
TOD: When I saw the 25th revival of West Side Story, both Riff and Tony were out that night, and I saw the understudies, who I thought were fabulous. I didn't realize until I was going through my Playbills a few years ago that the Tony I saw was Brent Barrett, also known hereabouts as the Sexiest Man Alive, and the Riff was Jerry Kolker, also known hereabouts as What ever happened to Jerry Kolker?
So you see, some of us do read the notes, BK, so you needn't get all tetchy.
-
Happy Birthday to DR Ann!
Hope you have a wonderful day!
-
TOD:
Hmmm... The only understudy/standby I can recall at the mo' would be Donna Murphy going on for Betty Buckley in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. I took a liking to her immediately and much preferred her stronger and shaded performance over Buckley's (I had seen the show right after it opened--ah, the days when I would go see a show twice...)
-
This is one of the reasons I save my Playbills, etc. I would have never remembered Felicia Boswell's name......
-
I also want to drag out my vocal score to Kurt Weill's KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY and follow the score with a recording of a peformance from February 2009 at Toronto Operetta Theatre. .
Am I the only one who remembers the series of readings of musicals done at Town Hall in the 1970s? It was something like a precursor to Encores, but as I recall very sparsely attended. I remember seeing Madeleine Khan as Amalia and Rita Moreno as Ilona in a reading of She Love Me and, yes, I was coming to that, Richard Kiley as Stuyvesant in Knickerbocker Holiday.
-
Happy Birthday to Mother of Toby, our own Dear Ann (greetings all the way from Wisconsin).
I leave for Newark tonight at 6:15pm.

I wasn't in New York in the 70s, although I would love to have been.

I also remember being blown away by Lenora Nemetz as Velma in the original CHICAGO, but I'm not sure right now if she was on as an understudy or as a replacement.

Why ask, when there is Google?
From http://listserv.bccls.org/cgi-bin/wa?A2=OPERA-L;sxAFFg;19950828225033-0400E
During the mid-late 70s, there was a series of musicals in concert
at Town Hall in NYC. This was a venture ahead of its time, preceding
the Bill Tynes/New Amsterdam series, or John McGlinn's Carnegie/Weill
Hall concerts. The first was SHE LOVES ME, with Madeline Kahn,
Barry Bostwick, Rita Moreno, Laurence Guittard, George Rose. It
was a semi-staged concert performance and ran three weeks. The
producers of the series over-estimated the audience for these
presentations, which in later years would run one to six performances
at the most.
Next was KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY, which closed early, after only
two weeks. Richard Kiley was Peter Stuyvesant, singing "September Song"
brilliantly.
The series was to have a third presentation: THE GOLDEN APPLE.
Appararently the middling success (box-office-wise, not artistically)
caused the cancellation of this project and even though posters
were already up, GOLDEN APPLE never came on.
-
Tuesday morning greetings! Another trip to the optician's today for my aunt...
TOD - When many of us gathered in NYC for Jewish Thighs on Broadway, my niece Laura and I went to the Saturday matinee of La Cage aux Folles and saw Bryan Batt go on in Gary Beach's place. He was fine, but I was disappointed not to see Beach and was looking forward to seeing him as Threnardier when Richard and I saw Les Miz in 2007. Alas, Chip Zien went on that night and I guess I am just not destined to see Gary Beach on Broadway.
Also, for Christmas 2005, DR Jose helped me procure tickets for the touring Wicked as a gift for our niece Lauren. At the performance we attended, Maria Eberline took Julia Murney's place as Elphaba and, at the end of "The Wizard and I" Lauren looked at me and said, "She's the SUB?"

That definitely rings more than a bell. I can recall a NY Times article with pictures of Kahn and Moreno and Kiley. And I remember being very excited about these concert musicals because I thought they were mini-tryouts for upcoming full productions. (I don't remember being disappointed that they didn't but maybe that's for the good...)

DR Ben - enjoy your last day in Wisconsin and say HI to Anthony for us!

By some coincidence, the friend who gave me the Toronto performance also gave me a complete SHE LOVES ME from Town Hall dated 3/29/77! I have two friends in the cast, Michael Hayward Jones as Keller and George Connolly as Arpad.

Where do you find these things? And if you check out the related videos, there is a "The Making Of". This is the way Penn Station should be. Oh, yes! 200 dancers, according to the documentary.
Actually I was at the Antwerp Station, which is right next to the Zoo, curiously, in 1976. [I was teaching math courses in Esperanto during the summer session of the Free University of Antwerp.]
I don't recall this happening.

I think I reported at length on Hairspray, when we saw it a few years ago. The standby, Leslie Kritzer--she of the famous name--went on and completely blew us away as Tracy. Only she wasn't fat. And Bruce Vilanche gave her flowers and an extra bow at the end.

Unless something more presing arrives in the mail today, I'll be working on the standard DVD of BEDTIME STORIES this afternoon. Since I've viewed all of the bonuses already, it's just a matter of watching the film again to ascertain the video and audio quality of the regular DVD.
-
DR JOSE that video you posted yesterday - and referenced above by DR WFO - was most enjoyable!
-
With a light workload, I should be able to get to something fun to watch later. I'll likely watch another Warner Archive selection: THE SERGEANT. Not that it's a fun movie, but I'm anxious to see it again after many years. Fingers crossed about its quality. The only one of the five I bought initially that I've had time to watch had very good video quality, so I'll keep optimism high until I've actually viewed it.
-
The most recent standby I've seen in a show was at SPAMALOT when both Tim Curry and Sara Ramirez were out. John Bolton was a fabulous Arthur; I really don't see how Curry could have been any better. Rosena Hill was the Lady of the Lake and she had a very strong and effective voice for the role.
I've mentioned this before but when I saw CABARET in 1968, Jill Haworth was still with the show, but we saw Anita Gilette as Sally at a Saturday matinee, and I'm assuming Gilette played the matinees and Haworth the evening shows, so I guess that really doesn't count as a standby.
-
I hope I can find some time today to watch last night's CASTLE at abc.com

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm still wondering why "The View" has such cheap and cheesy looking opening graphics. ::)

DR JRand - OH! I didn't realize you saw Aida twice in the same day! And I didn't realize that Felicia had been promoted to an understudy by then.

I ended up liking the show a lot.....went to Sam Goody's on the following Monday to get the CD, which they didn't have....so I bought it online. Much easier. I liked the framing device they used to open and close the show very much....and of course Jeremy was excellent!

I'm so envious! His sense of humor and sense of fun was SO on display. I'm sure he'd be a complete delight to know as a person.

I have been watching a few more of the early 1950's Hammer Noirs. Last night I watched BAD BLONDE with Barbara Payton and Tony Wright....sort of a low rent Postman Always Rings Twice....promoter's wife falls for young boxer....murder follows. Didn't make it through Man Bait with George Brent and Diana Dors. Then I watched Stolen Face....Dr George Brent all tired out takes a vacation meets concert pianist Lizabeth Scott....falls in love with her. She leaves him without explanation (she is engaged to someone else) - he does his usual woman's prison charity plastic surgery work. AND he gives one unfortunate shoplifter with a scarred face....Lizabeth's face! And marries her. She causes him endless trouble, and then of course Lizabeth comes back because she loves him and has broken off her engagement. The girl with the stolen face has the grace to fall from a moving train, so a happy ending happens.
THIS COULD BE A MUSICAL!!!! For sure!

I guess I'll head down now to see if either the USPS or the UPS fellows left me anything today. Then, it's into the kitchen to begin lunch preparation.

I saw a Saturday matinee of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE at the then Uris Theater.
The show did not start on time, and the only announcements being made were that the show would begin shortly.
There was a lot of fussing around in the orchestra pit for about twenty minutes.
The show began at 2:30pm with an announcement that Rex Smith would NOT be appearing as Frederick, nor would his understudy, but would be played by a certain young man whose name I cannot recall.
This Frederick was phenomenal! Seriously, he kept up with Kevin Kline, Estelle Parsons, Karla DeVito and George Rose more than adequately.
When the curtains calls were done, George Rose came to the footlights and demanded another round of applause for this Frederick, the audience responded with a well-deserved standing ovation when Rose told the story of how this Frederick came to be on the stage that day.
Rose related that no one could find Mr. Smith - yep, George Rose actually dissed his co-star from the stage - and that Smith's understudy was on in another show that afternoon, or was otherwise unavailable and that the young man who we saw playing Frederick was actually a member of the orchestra, making his Broadway stage debut with that particular performance. Rose's speech brought down the house.

One evening I went to the theatre intent on seeing Margo Channing. There was an audible sigh from the audience when it was announced that Miss Channing was unfortunately stuck in a snowstorm in Connecticut, and her role would be played by someone named Eve Harrington.
Well! Were we ever happy to see this charming newcomer! For one thing, she was the proper age for the role, which Margo, much as I lover her, certainly is not. The next day, Addison DeWitt wrote a glowing review. I always wondered how he knew to return to the show that particular evening.

My Alphabetical Musicals Project is out of

I've already had my first criticism of Illya Darling based on the CLIPS from the site - an castrecl member wrote to ask WHY I didn't remix the whole thing from the three-track session masters, because the opening number, which wasn't on the original LP and which I did mix, sounds so much better. I had to explain to him the following things, all covered in the booklet - a) on a 1000 unit title the profit margin is very small, hence it would have been cost-prohibitive to remix from scratch, b) I would never presume to remix the original producer's work, c) even if I WOULD presume to do so, there were multiple takes done, not always clearly marked as to which were used, plus pickups, inserts, and overdubs, none of which are clearly marked as to which went with what, and I wasn't about to "guess" at that, and d) if I HAD remixed from scratch you can bet your ASS there would be an equal number of people bellyaching how I'd CHANGED THE ORIGINAL SOUND OF THE LP AND HOW DARE I. In other words, e) you can't win.
-
And for the the title of the day

I'm an equal opportunity box o' hair. :)

I had a pleasant afternoon of viewing. I began with last night's HEROES, a very good episode with some neat surprises.
I know some folks don't like him, but I think Sylar is a great villain. He makes the show for me.
I also loved both Peter and Nathan's participation in last night's episode.
-
Next, I watched BEDTIME STORIES on regular DVD. Still a slight, sweet little family comedy. No great shakes, but for Adam Sandler to turn out a movie that doesn't find me grabbing for the remote within a few minutes is pretty special.
-
I just had an unpleasant blast from the past: a call from LA from a person who was once a rather good friend looking for a phone number.
-
I swear, there is on castrecl a "music critic" who is dumber than a box of hair; he seems incapable of doing any research, asks entirely moronic questions, and knows nothing. Oy!

Yes, but are you dumber than one?
-
There was one special feature that was not on the Blu-ray. It was Dylan and Cole Sprouse from the Disney Channel espousing the Blu-ray format. Otherwise, the same bonus features were on both the DVD and the Blu-ray.
-
Next, I watched another episode from the NCIS second season box set. This was a story featuring Charles Durning as a Medal of Honor winner who comes to NCIS to turn himself in for murdering his buddy during Iwo Jima. A pretty predictable story, but Durning certainly had some touching moments with various members of the team.
-
And I concluded my afternoon by skimming through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke and Noah were there arguing about Luke's father's motives and giving him the benefit of the doubt. "Pollyanna" Noah, as usual, took the high ground, but I think he's going to end up with egg on his face with this stand.

I'm more fascinated by the idiocy of the surrogate pregnancy plot. Do these characters remotely act like real human beings?

DR Elmore - isn't there a Rodgers & Hart song with a line that goes something like, "Everyone loves you when you sleep"? I'd like to recommend it to someone, but want to reference it correctly.

Ginny, that's a lovely song. I think it came from the same musical as "the Gentleman is a Dope," but right now, I'm not so sure. I'll leave it to the experts.
-
Shame on you, DR Kerry! "The Gentleman Is a Dope" is from Allegro, by Rogers and Hammerstein.

EV'RYBODY LOVES YOU
From I'd Rather Be Right
Lyrics by Lorenz Hart, music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics published on The Complete Lyrics of Lorenz Hart
Published September 1937.
Dropped before the New York opening. Not listed in pre-Broadway tryout programs.
VERSE
I wonder what you're dreaming while you're sleeping.
I'll never know.
You'll never know.
Now at last the world cannot come peeping
Into the thoughts you call your own.
You close your eyes and you're alone.
You're in a world that' s bright and new
And there is no one in it but you.
REFRAIN
Comfy and cozy,
All the world is rosy.
Ev'rybody loves you when you're asleep.
Too late to start now
Taking things apart now.
Ev'rybody loves you when you're asleep.
You forget
Your alphabet
When you've been counting sheep
Does my dreamer know troubles will keep? .
Comfy and cozy
All the world is rosy.
Ev'rybody loves you
When you're asleep.

"Everybody Loves You" was cut from I'D RATHER BE RIGHT. It's one of my favorite Rodgers & Hart songs.

I am watching a very strange, yet wonderful, 1963 Bollywood film titled SUNHERI NAGIN (which translates: THE GOLDEN SNAKE WOMAN).
The movie is in black and white, except the musical numbers which are in color. There are flying snakes which turn into swords, ape men which terrorize people in a cave, flying snake men, and a snake with the head of a woman.
Mahipal and Helen are the stars, there are no subtitles, and a couple of reels seem to be out of order, but I have been totally entertained for the last hour and 1/2.

I read the other day that The Guiding Light is on its last legs. That show may be gone by September. Ratings have plunged. It would be a shame its be around in one form or another for over 60 years.
And I know DR Elmoore's pal Ron Raines is in the show.

First of all, Brent Barrett is known as the "World's Sexiest Man Alive" ;) and secondly, could your Jerry Kolker be the same Jerry Colker who co-wrote the musical, Three Guys Naked From The Waist Down (http://www.amazon.com/Three-Naked-Waist-Original-Off-Broadway/dp/B000005BGQ/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1238533198&sr=8-1), with the lovely Michael Rupert?

Tomorrow I need to hit the NYPL Theatre Collection to look for a photo of the gospel quartet in the 1947 FINIAN'S RAINBOW; the "music critic" on Castrecl insists ithe senator's change to a black man was offensive blackface and I'm curious to know what they did originally. Whatever it was had to be fast because the transformation time is about as long as Ella's transformation to Passionella in THE APPLE TREE and that's very fast!!!. Wouldn't it be fascinating if nothing were done and it was just assumed it had happened?

I am inundated with new CDs all of a sudden.
The good: the new Burt Bacharach, which I am loving. He's really working that minor 9 territory he likes so much on this one.
The bad: an incredibly bad Mancini Latin album I got on a whim. I am amazed that Henry could have done something this stink-worthy. The worst use of "basketball arena" organ I have ever heard. Percussion arrangements are great but, oh, man, that organ is horrible!

DR Elmore, I could swear I've seen a picture of the transformed senator in the original production and that he was in blackface but not of the minstrel show type. If I can remember where I saw the pic in a book I'll post it tonight. I have the feeling it might have been in a Tams Witmark catalog, in which case I more than likely threw it out.

As for the Passionella change, one of the tidbits I learned during my high school drama club's trip to NYC: Using water-based makeup on top of oil-based makeup contributed to the speed of her transformation. They had one person wipe her face with a damp rag, while someone - or someones - else took care of the costume change.
As for Finian's Rainbow... I know I've seen pictures of the senator in blackface, or at least black makeup.

IDOL goes over till 9:20pm.
After there is this new Osbourne variety show on Fox after. They were showing a clip this morning.
They showed the weirdest thing. I guess they will do pranks on their audience. Anyhow they take this 20something cute guy and 20something cute girl and ask them if they will kiss for money.
When they agree (not sure how much it was fore), they blindfold them and tell them to win the $$ they must kiss/make-out for 20 seconds.
The catch is that after they are blindfolded they switch the 20 something cute girl for an 80 year old woman. So the young guy starts to make-out with her. It was so awkward looking (the clip ended). I doubt i'll watch this. But i'm curious what happens when he takes off his blindfold!

DR MattH i also like Sylar on HEROES!

*Be sure to keep watching for the remix section!
Back in 1973, I was managing a shoe store in the Tacoma Mall. One rather slow weekday, I came up with this great idea to do basically the same thing as that video, only using the Quintet from WEST SIDE STORY. I was going to do it on a Saturday with all the people dressed as regular shoppers. Sadly, in those days, Mall managements did have much of a sense of humor, so the idea died.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
TO DD AND DR ANN!
-
I saw a Saturday matinee of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE at the then Uris Theater.
Hmmmm, perhaps Mr. Rose had tutored the young man!
-
I never commented on last night's DWTS.
To me there are 2 performers that are way above the others: Melissa (the Bachelor) and Gilles (sex & the city movie). They are really really good. Interesting since they are probably the least celebrity of the group.
I also thought shawn was very good last night and deserved more than the marks they gave her.
And i thought they were very mean to Steven Wozniak. He is doing the best he can with his limitations. And they are acting like he is going on stage and doing nothing. I get why the fans are voting for him. Although i suspect either he or steve o (i enjoy them both) will go. And probably holly. Never warmed up to her.
I still don't have a favorite. If chuck did a bit better i'd probably cheer for him since julianne is my
favorite pro. Ty did great at the lifts. I enjoyed that!

Toby is, by the way, already showing his musical tastes. This last weekend I had his chair next to the piano and I was playing and singing to him, to celebrate our newly tuned piano :) Toby smiled and cooed for selections from Godspell, Les Miserables, Into The Woods, Company, Songs Fot A New World, and Avenue Q. Attempts to sing Phantom of The Opera and Cats were met with howls of protest. I'm such a proud mommy :D

MR BK - it's like the email I got last night that read:
I recently saw the ad in the paper for auditions for the first show of the year. I noticed that the ad did not mention that any children would cast for parts even in the ensemble. I then went to the playhouse website and noticed that none of the shows have any children's parts. Is there a reason that they have been excluded this year? Or am I just reading it all wrong?
Typically the youth workshop does not include younger children, just the older ones. What do I tell my son who has come to LOVE being in the shows at the playhouse? Help me explain it to him.
Thank you,
B**** H****
I asked the president to respond. We DO have a children's workshop that last for two weeks that would INCLUDE her untalented son - if she paid attention to it, she would know that. Also, we usually plan to do a show that has many roles for kids in the ensemble every OTHER year. It just so happens that she was around when we did such a show two seasons in a row. She's really ahead of herself.

Good Evening!
I had a good rehearsal tonight. I think.

I read about Andy Hallett's passing this afternoon. Only 33! And so handsome out of that makeup, too.

You non parents can skip this post as it will no doubt fall under your TMI aegis.
You parents may get some hilarity out of knowing that DS Gabe managed to clog our downstairs toilet so thoroughly that even after 3 hours of plunging and pouring various caustic liquids down it, it's barely running again. The rain just started back up here in Charleston. It's not supposed to stop until Friday. :-\
-
Had a busy evening of viewing.
I began with THE SERGEANT, the next in the Warner Archive collection that I bought. Again, there are age-related specks and the reel markers are still there, but otherwise, it looked as I remembered it looking, and the color was mostly quite strong. Yes, there was some interlaced shimmer, but only a tiny bit. For the most part, I was very pleased with the disc.
-
I loved, loved, loved this weeks episode of CASTLE. That Nathan Fillion was certainly underused when he was on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, he is really a fine actor, and so funny.
I went to ABC.com and tried to watch it on-line. The site said I needed a flash player. I thought I had a flash player. It sent me to the Adobe site to upload a free version. I uploaded it. I tried to play the show. It STILL said I needed a flash player. So, the site and my computer are just not communicating.
-
Next, I put in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT on Blu-ray because I wanted to watch the AMERICAN IN PARIS excerpts with Dolby True HD sound. It made ALL the difference in the world compared to the Dolby DIgital 1.0 that's on the new Blu-ray of the movie.
True, the visuals are better on the new disc; THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT used an older transfer of the film, and then for part of the excerpt, the telecine operator zooms in to fill the screen so resolution is definitely lost there. But the sound is so much fuller on TE than it is on the new Blu-ray. The difference in sound between the two is heartbreaking for me.
-
Next, I watched tonight's NCIS. Once we had the suspects, I easily guessed the guilty party. But it was still a fun episode. Loved Ziva's solo handling of the two intruders.
-
I loved tonight's THE MENTALIST. I was completely fooled, and the climax was kind of heartstopping.

Then I watched tonight's AMERICAN IDOL.
With the first two singers being bad and THE WORST OF THE SEASON (that's Anoop and Megan), the rest of them sang anywhere from OK to great. But I was ready to turn the show off forever after those two terrible opening songs.
The best four of the night for me: Danny (who had coasted the last two weeks but really did well tonight), Allison, Scott, and Adam. Lil hollered her entire song and I thought Kris was pleasant but overrated by the judges.
I will be shocked if the bottom three aren't Anoop, Megan, and Matt with Megan leaving.

The news broke yesterday, but just in case...
Salmonella in Pistachios Spurs Recall (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/31/business/31nuts.html?ref=dining)
"Barely two months after a huge recall of peanut-related products, federal officials said late Monday that a California processor would recall about one million pounds of pistachio products because of concerns about salmonella contamination.
The company, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, based in Terra Bella, Calif., decided to recall its 2008 crop after one of its customers, Kraft Foods, found several types of salmonella during routine analysis of the product. Kraft Foods alerted the Food and Drug Administration of its findings on March 24."
One million pounds?

I got Season Six of HAWAII FIVE-O in the mail for review purposes. Tomorrow, however, I'll be working on the new Collector's Blu-ray edition of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. It's two discs, and I'll be comparing last year's one disc Blu-ray release with this new one. I'd be shocked if they did a new transfer (I'm sure they didn't) though the sound on the new one is DTS-HD MA while the original Blu-ray had an uncompressed PCM track. Again, I doubt there will be any difference to the sound.
Luckily, I have two Blu-ray players hooked up to my TV so doing A/B/ comparison between these two Blu-rays won't be hard.

Matt, that happened to me a long time ago, too, and I discovered it worked after a reboot.
Maybe you should try rebooting the downstairs toilet! ;)

Good Night, Friends!

Oh shoot. I should have asked you if you wanted me to burn the episode to disc, but I already deleted it from my dvr. Sorry about that MattH. Hopefully you can get the ABC site to cooporate with you computer.

The rain just started back up here in Charleston. It's not supposed to stop until Friday. :-\
I would have put a smiley face if I had posted about rain in Phoenix. Location, location, location.
-
Coming up next The H-Man - the movie that had a very scary television ad campaign back in 1959....but I didn't get to see it on the BIG SCREEN.
Oooh, I love THE H MAN! I believe it is coming to DVD in a few weeks or so!

And on a related note...
Any further word from DR Dakota Celt?

Hmm... For the past hour or so, I've been trying to figure out if I feel like I have an allergy attack coming on, or if I'm just sleepy and should just go to bed. I really hope it's the latter.
Goodnight.

Yes. She is still at her mother's. She said if anyone wants to know if there is anything they can do, the Humane Society is in need at the present time. I suppose left-behind animals, maybe?

Good evening! I just got home from my first rehearsal for GUYS AND DOLLS. Everything went smoothly on the drive up and at rehearsal, but suddenly as I was driving home, it hit me like a ton of bricks...
I'M DOING A SHOW IN SEATTLE!!!!!!!!!!!
It has been over ten years since I last worked in Seattle. And I guess I am a little more pumped than I realized.

Here's my advice to TCB - start doing a "journal in posts" of your entire experience - I know everyone here would be very interested to read.

Well, according to the clock on my computer, it's after midnight. I wonder if my computer will crash!
