Well, you've read the notes, the notes seesawed, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently listening to the soundtrack for MOO For The Seesaw.

Anyway....DR DAW I would call it a hidden talent, since I don't use it much - and in fact after a bit of a psychological blocking some years ago, facing the keyboard is not my favorite thing to do - it was interesting to sight read again.  AND I used our new synthesizer, which we got along with a new electric piano.....both very nice instruments with lots of stuff.  And they both have computer interface which will be nice sooner or later!

TOD:

I have always liked the score to GONE WITH THE WIND....and I certainly enjoyed THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH - especially after reading Doris' comment after recording "Que Sera Sera" - "Well that's the last time you'll hear THAT song!"

But as for music that made me sit up and take notice.....it was probably KING KONG by Mr Max Steiner or another Max Steiner score.....A SUMMER PLACE.

I am looking forward to receiving ILLYA DARLING.

Our piano player will return this evening - in the rain and snow, so I will be back to turning pages, which is fine with me.

I have also ordered TWO FOR THE SEESAW.....just to see.

Well DR MATTH - I am still with you.  I found Mr Bolger irritating in APRIL IN PARIS, and the French guy Claude Daupin pretty much of a flop as well.  The idea that Day and the beautiful Eve Miller would be FIGHTING over the affections of Ray Bolger was just too incredible!  I did enjoy "Ring the Bell Tonight" - it's always been my favorite song in the movie - and I watched Doris' face during her dancing with Bolger and she seemed to be having a good time...but then she is a great actress, and she wrote in her bio that Bolger and director David Butler were at each other's throats during filming, so everyone was pretty unhappy.

Robert Osborne also said that Warners had Bolger for three films including the film version of WHERE'S CHARLEY, and this film finished up that commitment.  So I think Doris was just stuck with him.  I wish Gene Nelson had done the part.  I love to watch them dance in TEA FOR TWO and LULLABY OF BROADWAY.

Gene Nelson, Donald O'Connor, George Murphy--anyone would have been better than Ray Bolger!  They might as well have had Margaret Hamilton star in YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER...

This film also goes down in my book as having the most annoying French cabaret number ever!

TOD:

I grew up with some of my parents' soundtracks--DR ZHIVAGO was one that I remember getting a lot of play--but the first one that I went out and actively bought for myself was Bill Conti's AN UNMARRIED WOMAN.  Although almost all of the tracks are just variations of the jaunty main theme, I loved it and played it incessantly.  It's never been released on CD--I've had to rip my own MP3's out of it.  I play it when I need a little musical pick-me-up.

Good morning, all!  It's a rainy day in NYC and I'm happy that my intenerary takes me no further than the bank across Broadway today.  So, it's back to the Iroquois Theatre disaster this morning.

DR George, I am so sorry! I know how absolutely horrible that can be. I'm sorry you and your sister didn't begin the ticket search two or three days ago. When I was a child, there was on one of the Cincinnati tv stations a noontime show run by a personality, Ruth Lyons. The audience would have a fantastic lunch before the show and then move to chairs to watch and participate in the show's broadcast. Tickets were free, but the show was in such demand that, when and if you could get the tickets, it was always for a year or more in advance. So, in short, my aunt Dorothy requested and got tickets for her four sisters and all their children. We all took off from school, and the plan was that everyone would ride the train from my hometown to Cincinnati and make a festive day of the shebang.

Except, when we got to the train station, my mother had forgotten all of our tickets, We had to watch everyone climb onto a train, listen to my mother get several lectures - which she really deserved since organization was never her strong point - and head off to Cincinnati without us. My story ends more happily than WICKED: my dad too gave her crap about her organizational skills, drove us home, picked up the tickets and drove us to Cincinnati: we arrived at the station about 5-10 minutes before the train pulled in. I ended up being one of the audience members she interviewed! I'd like to say that my mother after that was organized but I have too many memories of no breakfasts before school, no toilet tissue, no lightbulbs, etc. because she "forgot."  This elephant never forgets and, as a result, I'm usually ready a day or two earlier.

TOD: GONE WITH THE WIND. Can't rememebr the next, but the big one in 1965 was GOLDFINGER.

I lost tickets one, too. It was at Phoenix Theater's production of "Joseph...Dreamcoat." I remembered exactly where the seats were and that one seat was a child's seat, which they were able to confirm on their seating chart. I had to bring my mastercard statement that proved I paid for tickets, then wait until the house was filled -- except for those seats. Then the usher seated us. DRs Sandra and Megan will remember this.

I made a "ticket box" after that, where ALL the tickets go as soon as they are purchased. Now I know where they are.

My folks had the boxed set soundtracks of OKLAHOMA!. CAROUSEL and THE KING AND I, so I grew up with those.
The first soundtrack I bought with my allowance was the OST from THAT DARN CAT! because I really liked the music in the movie.  I remember that there was a bit of urging on my folks' part for me to buy something with more songs on it, but I was bullheaded even then.
I had the HOW THE WEST WAS WON soundtrack as well, but wasn't completely happy with it until Rhino issued the fabulous 2-cd soundtrack.
I owned DOCTOR ZHIVAGO on 4-track and 8-track.  I didn't get the lp until well into my college days when there was a used record store on campus.
I'd guess that Alex North's score to WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLF? is the one that made me sit up and take notice, and made me a North fan.

So sorry about Wicked, DR George.

I always have a terrible fear that I will lose tickets.  I have a magnet clip on my refrigerator and I clip all tickets in their envelopes there. Then a couple days before (if I remember) I take the tickets and put them in my billfold which I will check 3 or 4 times to make sure they are there.  I'm a little obsessive about it, not sure why, maybe just growing up my mother would ask over and over "Do you have the tickets?" until it drove my dad nuts.  I HATE to have someone else in charge of the tickets - it makes me too nervous that they will forget.

Since I had to have been about 4 years old when we went to see it at the drive-in movie theater (which for some reason I remember very clearly) I'm assuming that it's because my dad absolutely loved the music and played the soundtrack at home.  I think I'll see if Netflix has Dr. Z. I really don't remember much except Laura's theme and the house in the snow.

Since I'm not well versed in film soundtracks, I think the only ones i have in my library is "Titanic" and  "Lawrence of Arabia" - and that was a gift, I will share two ticket incidents.

Twice now, I've ordered tickets online for an evening performance of a show that had a matinee/evening schedule on the same day.  I always try and do will call as that usually will keep the cost down.  Well, both times, I went to the box office to pick up my tickets and found that the tickets I had ordered were for the afternoon show.  Both incidences have happy endings as they were able to seat us in BETTER seats than the ones I had thought I purchased.  I guess it helps when both times it was for shows that didn't sell well to begin with. (the LAST equity tour of Les Miserables and the not-so-great tour of Whistle Down the Wind

So now, I'm very cautious when ordering online.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I think the first film score I truly noticed - and it was one hard not to notice - would have had to been John Williams' score for "Star Wars (Part IV)" - otherwise known as the "First Star Wars Movie". ;)

Then I'd have to say the next one to stick with me would have been Dave Grusin's "On Golden Pond".

And the first film score that made me cry - and still does - would have to be Ennio Morricone's "Cinema Paradiso".

So...

I found myself wide awake around 4:30 this morning.  I had toyed with the idea of just staying up - and maybe even heading into the office at that time to get some work done - but decided to head back to bed, to sleep.  When the clock radio went off at 7:00, I heard the first minute of the NPR news, and then the EBS.  At first I thought it was a test, but then the announcer came on: there was a tornado warning in effect for the next two hours. And it was pouring rain outside too. So, I stayed in bed until around 8:30, listening to the news and further storm and weather updates. Once the all-clear was announced, I got out of bed and started my day then.

Now, when it comes to "Wow" moments, listening to a film's soundtrack, the one that sticks with me is John Williams' score for The Towering Inferno, specifically the opening credits.  This was during my college days, and the guy teaching a screenwriting class kept going on and on about the fantastic opening credits, how the helicopter keeps zooming across the screen.  He had it all wrong, of course.  Watch and listen to those opening credits, and you'll see that the helicopter is pretty much static on-screen, that the background is doing all that zooming.  I got the prof to go back, and watch and listen again.  He was surprised, to say the least.  He also didn't like to be contradicted.  C'est la vie.

I did make it to the Hominy Grill this morning for breakfast.  I ended up sitting outside under the awning - the rain had stopped, and since it was packed inside, it was also a bit noisy.  I had a very basic Southern breakfast: two eggs, sausage, hominy grits, a "Mile High" biscuit, mixed berry jam (raspberry, blackberry and blueberry), and some coffee.  It was a good breakfast, but it did remind that I was not eating a NYC diner breakfast: it was a very sensible portion. ;) -Although, I would have liked two patties of their homemade sausage instead of one.

DR George - Is Wicked still in town this week/end?  If so, you might be able to ask for "post-dated" seating. Some of the Broadway houses have started doing this in order to make sure that the seats are filled - and that the audiences members are kept happy.  Since most of the houses use computerized box office systems, they are able to tell when tickets have been bought, but not used.  So, if someone happened to miss a show due to a travel issue or sickness, they will, depending on availability, allow people to use their "old" tickets to get into another performance.  They may not get the same "quality" of seats, but at least they still get to see the show.  So, if Wicked is still in your neck of the woods this week, and you happen to find the tickets, it might be worth calling the box office directly to see if there is anyway they can accommodate you and your family.

DR George, I'm very sorry you and company did not get to see Wicked yesterday.   I'm sorry you didn't try calling the box office, since you at least knew the seat locations, to see if some arrangement could be made.  I've read of people working with the house manager in some New York theatres under similar circumstances.

We (eventually) thought about that, but we didn't buy the tickets and how would the theater know that we're legitimate.  AND my sister couldn't find the phone number of her co-worker who did buy the tickets.

Good Morning!

TOD:  The music from almost every movie I saw from the time of my birth until i was about 14 made me sit up and take notice.  It all represented another place, another dimension, another dream.  The two scores that really haunted me were Max Steiner's (mostly) lovely score for "A Summer Place" and whoever did the orchestrations (I will go back and look) for Harold Rome's music for "Fanny" -- especially the title song.  Another I definitely took notice of was "Lawrence of Arabia."  By the time I was 12 or 13, I knew Andre Previn from Alex North from Johnny Williams from Franz Waxman from Henry Mancini.

Yes.  ILLYA DARLING is my new favorite KRITZERLAND release of the year!

And as MR BK says, hearing the songs in "show order" makes the album a completely different kind of listen.  My favorite songs are all there....and the addition of PO PO PO and THE BIRTHDAY SONG are great....particularly PO PO PO with it's dialog and exposition.

The music is glorious...remember this is my first time hearing in in S T E R E O!!

Congrats to KRITZERLAND and MR BK on this wonderful release.  Hopefully the score - if not the show - will be rediscovered.  The arrangements are lovely to hear.  And since that cock-eyed Greek prostitute is the whole show - hearing her "vocals" in stereo is also very nice!!

Hurray!

But I still can't make out the lyric in GOLDEN LAND that follows the line:

"....seek the Achilles heel....?????????????????????....far away"

There was a short-lived sitcom with Georgia Engel as a midwesterner who moved to Los Angeles, and she had one of the greatest lines delivered in her inimitable style.  She was going to make an authentic Mexican dinner to celebrate and came out of the kitchen saying, "We were all out of chorizo, so I used Jimmy Dean sausage instead."

Apparently the filmmakers do interview and show clips of some of the original participants, including excerpts from the legendary original audiotapes of the "sessions" that led to the creation of the show.

I shall shortly be on my way to Day Two of Auditions.  I am hoping we have lots of fun people and especially some good men for all of the parts.

We have some possibilities for most roles....but I hate to take people with LOTS of conflicts....such as....not available until May 15!  Then why audition for the show....and ask for a leading role only?

Not only are they indicating the incorrect label [the label that was supposed to be releasing this some time back], but also an old release date, and indicating that it was going to be two discs.

DR George, I'm very sorry you and company did not get to see Wicked yesterday.   I'm sorry you didn't try calling the box office, since you at least knew the seat locations, to see if some arrangement could be made.  I've read of people working with the house manager in some New York theatres under similar circumstances.

We (eventually) thought about that, but we didn't buy the tickets and how would the theater know that we're legitimate.  AND my sister couldn't find the phone number of her co-worker who did buy the tickets.

Well, if she's her co-worker, can't someone at work give her a number? Won't she see her at work?

Too late.  It all happened yesterday (Sunday) morning at 8:30 am.  No one at my sister's work works on a Sunday...state workers, you know. ;)

Also, the documentary about the casting and creation of the recently closed [but touring] revival of A Chorus Line opens in theatres 17-April.

Is this something that we need?  A documentary following the creation and casting of the original seems far more interesting.

Well... That was part of the original plan when it was going to be a multi-part documentary for HBO, which was supposed to premiere (on HBO) right after the revival opened on Broadway. From what I understand, they were going to follow-up with members of the original cast in conjunction with the casting of their revival-cast counterparts.  Somewhere along the line, the plans changed multiple times.  I believe the whole issue of compensation for members of the original cast - which has since been quietly resolved - was part of the change of plans.  -Which is also why no one is identified in the audio clips presented in the current documentary. At least that's my take on the situation.  *Remember, I was only one of the pianists.

I walked over to the local post office and of course there's only one automatewd postage machine but there were were too many waiting on it. Since I was going to take my walk after the post office trip, I decided to walk down to the 68th Street branch where there are three machines and take care of the walk first. So, I had a brisk walk in the rain!

I love to walk in the rain
Look for me when it's stormy down some leafy lane
And I'll be there
I love to walk in the rain
The lightning may be fright'ning but I love the rain
So I don't care
Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
How about a week with every day a pittper-patter day?
I wouldn't complain.

When I got back, I started on THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, Volume 3 of the Disney Shorts Collection. I'm not sure I have ever seen this 25 minute version of the story. It was made in 1990 and features all of the recast voices for the characters. It was OK but truly nothing very special, and having characters like Donald in the story only to lose his temper two times and that was his only contribution seemed kind of weak. Some missed opportunities, I thought.

Next came "The PIED PIPER" from 1933, one of the Silly Symphonies. The operetta kind of score that all of those films had back then doesn't wear so well today, but it's a reasonably faithful version of the old tale. I thought about DR Elmore when the tune "Joyland" was played, very similar to Victor Herbert's "Toyland."

Next was "Old King COle" with various nursery rhyme characters heading to King COle's castle for a party. The same kind of operetta score as in the other Silly SYmphonies.

And the set had a fifth short - the 1946 Goofy cartoon "A Knight for a Day." Here Goofy must face champion knight Sir Cumference for the hand of Princess Esmeralda.

The Goofy "How to" cartoons are some of my all-time favorites, but this was pretty weak.

I really wasn't bowled over by the collection. I didn't really understand the rationale behind these particular shorts being grouped together. They're not all about knights. I guess they ARE all set in the middle ages, but that's about it. They're not from the same year or all in color or all starring Mickey or any other feasible reasons for their grouping.

Jason and his Argonauts, for all their troubles in securing the mythical treasure, had nothing on cast recording collectors who've endured 40 years of waiting and false alarms for the release of ILLYA DARLING on CD. But that day has arrived and the gorgeous labor of love from Kritzerland is worth every drachma. It's great to finally hear the opening sequence, PO PO PO, which establishes Homer Thrace's character and contains delightful underscoring. as well as the short THE BIRTHDAY SONG, with its masculine chorus.

Having only recently learned that the ENTR'ACTE was the actual OVERTURE in performance, it still takes a bit of adjustment on my part not to hear the TAVERNA DANCE (the former BOUZOUKI NIGHTS) kick off the album but it does make me wish I could have heard it live in the theater with those bouzoukis wafting up from the pit. And how nice to hear the orchestrations with greater clarity in what must have been a tough assignment, given the original recording's overly resonant ambience.

So let's fry up some saganaki, crack open a big bottle of Metaxa and toast Mr. Kimmel, with our thanks.

Another interesting side light of Illya Darling

One of the members of the ensemble went on to greater fame by appearing in a ground breaking play and its movie adaptation.

Robert La Tourneaux (Timid Sailor) who one year and three days later would appear in Mart Crowley's The Boys In the Band. He played the role of  Cowboy (Harold's birthday present)

From a photo session where he also posed nude for After Dark a "gay but not gay" entertainment magazine (1968-1982)

For La Tourneaux it would be more of a curse than a stepping. La Tourneaux was openly gay and that was very bold in the early 70's. He would appear in three other films in small roles and one more play on Broadway.

He would later go on to do a cabaret act at gay adult movie theater. in 1983 he was convicted of assault and went to Rikers.

He contacted HIV and the full blown AIDS during his stay.

He made headlines when he sued his landlord who wanted to evict him from his apartment because he had AIDS.  He won his case and he died in1986.

Pioneer Drama Service was my least favorite inventory at Drama Book Shop: it is the Edsel of play publishers. I do know there are too may BABES IN TOYLAND versions out there, most sugar-coated, keeping some characters, sometimes remnants of the original plot, and usually cutting a 3-hour show down to an hour or less for kiddies. I may have looked at the Francoeur score when I was still at the book shop. I check out the Wikipedia site regularly on BABES and keep the information on the original production correct.

I knew Robert La Tourneaux; I met him when he was acting in an Ayckbourn play and WHAT THE BUTLER SAW in Columbus, OH around 1977. He wasn't a very good actor but a friendly guy. During the 1980s before his death he was working as an escort. When I worked with the Gay Men's Chorus in the 1980s, I saw him at many celebrity parties with other famous escorts like Casey Donovan.

Jose, a tornado warning means take shelter...  A watch means watch the weather it could happen.
I'm glad one didn't hit, generally staying in bed isn't a safe place to be

DR George, I'm very sorry you and company did not get to see Wicked yesterday.   I'm sorry you didn't try calling the box office, since you at least knew the seat locations, to see if some arrangement could be made.  I've read of people working with the house manager in some New York theatres under similar circumstances.

No one at my sister's work works on a Sunday...state workers, you know. ;)

Watch it, George!

Hmm... How did he know my name?

When Andrew gave me my bill, I asked him how the waiter knew my name.  It turns out that instead of putting my table/seat position on the kitchen order tickets, he actually put my name.  Even my bill had my name on it.

I guess that officially makes me a regular at FIG.  :)

I had a very entertaining evening of film and TV choices.

I began with the Blu-ray of GIGI. Compared to the ancient DVD I had, the Blu-ray is a revelation. That old Metrocolor is obviously hard to control since it sometimes blooms even in high definition, but for the most part, apart from occasionally ruddy skintones, I thought it looked quite splendid.

And the Dolby TrueHD audio track was quite wonderful full without overpowering the singers.

Oh... I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet here in HHW, but...

Patelson Music House in NYC will be closing their doors on April 18. They are currently running a "25%-Off Spring Inventory Sale", and I'm wondering if any other discounts will be introduced over the next week and a half.

I was in there recently and it was so bare, I asked if they were going out of business. They assured me they were not. Too bad. I loved that store, and the Patelsons were lovely folk.

Patelson's was always somewhat of a mixed-bag for me, and eventually became, more or less, a "necessary evil".  The first time I went in there about 20 years ago, I was truly awed by the store - especially the bins of used music.  I still remember finding some gently used copies of some Britten song cycles.

However, even back then, I found the quality and knowledge of some of the staff quite appalling at times.  There were more than a few times when I found myself helping out other customers, and basically correcting some of the sales staff in the process.  If one of the clerks did not see something immediately on the shelves in the back, they would automatically tell the customers that it was either no longer in print or never existed in print.  Did you check in this collection? I would even end up referring some people to the music store in Virginia I was working at at the time.  Well, I know I just ordered two copies of that for the store...

In any case, sheet music stores are a true scarcity nowadays, and Patelson's will be missed.  It really is a piece of New York City's musical history.  At least Frank Music on 54th still seems to be hanging in there.

After I finished GIGI, I watched the making of documentary. At one point, Caron admitted being shocked that she had been dubbed by Betty Wand in the movie; she thought they were going to use her own singing voice. Then, they played a bit of "Say a Prayer for Me Tonight" with Leslie's vocal, and it's SO terrible. Can't believe she thought that it would be acceptable singing.

The Rhino soundtrack which has all of Leslie's vocals is very revealing. Her work is as bad as most of Rosalind Russell's attempts at singing Rose's songs in GYPSY.

At an early moment in tonight's CHUCK I got VERY irritated and almost turned it off forever. I was so tired of his handlers not listening or believing in him. But then the plot took some really interesting turns and I just loved the episode.

Yes.  Or at least tie that one:

Customer: I'm looking for a copy of the piano version "Flight of the Bumble Bee" by Rimsky-Korsakov.
Clerk: OK. Hold on, let me check in the back.
(time passes)
Clerk: I'm sorry, I don't see anything on the shelves by that composer.
Customer: Really? I know I bought a copy of that here before.
Clerk: Well, maybe Korsakov is spelled with a "C"...

-That's when I spoke up...
