In my DVD player:  "Zack and Miri Make a Porno: Disc 2: Bonus Material" from Netflix.  I watched the movie a few days ago and thought that it was very funny...but I like that kind of humor. :)

On my DVR:  last night's episode of "Southland."  My friend Margo is interested in seeing it, but she doesn't have cable, so I recorded it for her.

Tonight, I'm going to see a local production of "Loot."  I was going to be in it when it was going to be put on last November, but the whole production fell through.  This production has the same director and theater group, but I didn't even know about the new auditions.  I'm sure it will be very good.  I'll finally find out how it all turns out. :D

TOD:

Videowise:

The blurays of Quantum of Slumdog, Millionaire's Solace, and An American in Paris arrived, and der B got the player's software upgraded, so I've watched the "making of" extra of Quantum and the end credits for Millionaire and haven't had time for anything else.

CDs:

I went through a JRB kick earlier this week, what with his disc with Lauren Kennedy, Parade, and Songs for a New World.  I can run hot and tepid with this guy.

Yesterday, I put on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Caribou back to back (ties in with our concept discussion earlier).  Jamie, who is not that much younger than I, came in during the latter and said "Oh!  Elton John!"  I told him he'd just missed SPLHCB, and he replied "I don't know from the Beatles - they were before my time."

Huh???

Ties in with my rant from a couple of days ago, that people generally only know from their own time, and don't explore stuff that came out earlier.  But were the Beatles all that long ago?  That a guy that is at best a decade younger than I am would think of their stuff as "old" and thus dismissable?

And I'm increasingly believing that his POV is not that uncommon, in fact may be standard.

Which is bizarre, because we are now in an age when we have more access to our past, to the music and films and dammit to the information of what has come before, but at the same time all that information has to be instantaneous, now, twitterized, as if lingering and savoring themselves are notions better filed in a museum (and who goes to museums, that's all old stuff...).

And it ties in, as well, with "trendy."  No, people of the world, these things that are trendy have been around before, they sometimes were conceived a decade or a hundred years ago, the only thing that is trendy is their rediscovery.  That does not make them new!  It just makes them new to you, and if you had the slightest awareness of the world around you, the slightest curiosity about where things come from, why they were created in the first place, what makes them tick, you would know this simple fact.

And that knowledge doesn't close doors, it opens them, it leads to new questions and rediscoveries and connections!

I guess I'm just wierd, to be curious... oh, wait, those are synonyms.  Never mind.  I just explained a lot about myself there.

However, waiting in the wings are FROST/NIXON, LAST CHANCE HARVEY, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, THE READER, IN TREATMENT, THE RICKY GERVAIS SPECIAL and a few others.

Good morning, all! After my successful visit from the electrician and my new kitchen lights, I have a visit from the plumber this morning to repair a leak in my toilet. Heigh-ho the glamorous life!

When the plumber leaves, i must take myself to Toyland for a meeting about getting everything on BABES IN TOYLAND printed out and shipped to California. I printed out the new libretto and my notes yesterday, and I'll go through it this morning and make notes while I'm waiting for the plumber.

After the meeting, it's back here to work on other projects. either the Moross or the Loesser. I also have to draft a asketch for Ron Raines of a medley he's doing in a couple of months with an orchestra somewhere.

I began twisting said arms a few weeks ago, and I think it will happen.  The decision is really CD vs. DVD, but the audio simply isn't good enough to stand on its own without the visuals.  For this show, Vinnie wasn't there doing his own recording, so what we had to work with, while absolutely fine for the DVD is not optimal for sound sans image.

And personally, I'd really prefer seeing and hearing the entire show as opposed to just hearing it. Felt the same way about Elaine Stritch and Bea Arthur's CDs of their acts. Much preferred seeing rather than just hearing them.

GAY ELEPHANT DRAWS POLITICIAN'S FIRE

Quote
Ninio, a male elephant acquired by a Poland's Poznan Zoo, who has demonstrated a total lack of interest in the ladies, is now drawing fire from Michal Grzes, a conservative politician angered over what he sees as a wasted investment. Here are Grzes' statements, from the Telegraph:

"We didn't pay 37 million zlotys (7.6 million pounds) for the largest elephant house in Europe to have a gay elephant live there," said Mr Grzes, who is from the right-wing opposition Law and Justice party.

Shades of the 60s. New School students have taken over the building on the southeast corner of 14th Street and Fifth Avenue. The traffic has become a nightmare. They have been protesting many things over the past months and they took over a different building earlier this year. Most of the protests center around Bob Kerry as the President of New School. These students want him out and want the cuts to stop.

I'm glad I'm not in a cab or a truck trying to get downtown!

DR JoseSPiano - the theatre you'll be working in looks splendiferous!     :)

Next week, they'll be hosting a walk-thru of the historic Dock Street Theatre.  Dock Street is Charleston Stage's home theatre - as well as for Spoleto USA (Piccolo Spoleto).  It's currently in the midst of a three-year renovation, but it should be ready for the 2010-2011 season.  I'm really looking forward to getting a chance to check out such a historic space.

bk, I know it's not Ask bk day, but do you know why it is seemingly so difficult to synch picture and sound?  I've often seen this "dis-synchronicity" on video and even on broadcast television, and if there's even the slightest delay one from the other, it drives me to utter distraction!   :P   [ quiet, DR elmore3003! ;) ]

I've noticed this with some of the latest digital transmissions lately.  "(The) Ellen (Degeneres Show)" constantly seems out-of-sync lately.

TOD:

DVD:  Age of Kings
CD:  Lainie Kazan (Don't remember the album title but it has a version of They Don't Give Medals To Yesterdays Heroes.  The only other version I've ever heard besides Mr. Haines).

elmore, I also watched Krod Mandoon and had a few good laughs.

bk, I remember The Hat.  It's certainly no Langers, but I would frequently stop there when in the neighbourhood of Pasadena.  It was near John Mitchell's mystery book shop...Is he still in business?  He had a lot of good stuff, much often outrageously priced, but sometimes you found some deals.

Daw, out of synch DVDs are sometimes the player's fault rather than the actual DVD - for TV, I don't know why anything should be out of synch, save for scenes that are looped, which sometimes gets dicey, although with today's technology I should think they could get it right.

Back from a lovelier than lovely time at Toyland. We solved lots of problems, brought up a few new ones and I have to writen an email to the office in California asking if and when they will let us have a new office manager. We need one ASAP since we lost ours in the middle of February.

DR MBarnum, KROD MANDOON is funny, perhaps not so funny as it thinks it is, but there were several outrageously silly moments, and some good actors like Roger Allam, whose version of "Stars" on the OLC of LES MIZ has never been bettered, letting their hair down. Sean Maguire has a great physique and you should enjoy his showing it off if the humor is perhaps too subtle for you.

Well we all have several....this one has been on my mind ever since CD labels began issuing expanded editions from studio masters.  Happily, this one is in stereo...and contains both Natalie Wood's AND Jackie Wand's vocals.

I watched two programs while I ate lunch. First was the simply adorably hunky Sean Maguire in KROD MANDOON. Kind of a MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL/Mel Brooks hybrid, I laughed out loud several times. Yes, some of the gags are telegraphed from a mile away, and the stereotypes (swishy gay, nymphet girl friend, inept assistants) are rampant. Still, there was plenty to look at and lust over, and everyone seems to be having a really good time doing it. It was infectious.

I also watched HARPER'S ISLAND, the premiere episode. I didn't find many of the characters at all likable or interesting, and I know who I was rooting for to get killed off. The eventual murdered person was a BIG shock.

The writers threw in a couple of cheap scares unworthy of a class show, but I'll hang around for awhile. Richard Burgi makes anything more interesting though the emphasis is on the dreary young people whom I found singularly vapid.

Next I finished the four remaining short films by Jean Painlevé in the set. The last was a stop action-clay animation of BLUEBEARD with an opera score that ran 13 minutes. Quite original and one of the best things in the set.

I also liked a short in which Painlevé explained time as the fourth dimension making his hypothesis easy to understand.

Then I began disc three in this Criterion set. I thought it was a 2 1/2 hour documentary, but it's actually eight episodes from a 1988 French TV series on the famous scientist/filmmaker. I watched four of them.

He's a very interesting man (he's 86 in the episodes, but he looks at least 10 years younger), but having to sit through some of the same films in excerpt form makes me antsy. I've been fast forwarding through those whenever they come up.

And I am currently posting from the spacious(!) pit of the Sottile Theatre.  This really is a beautiful classic House, and I can tell it was built - and meant(!) - for a totally acoustic experience - no mics or other electronic volume enhancement.  In fact, above the audience section, there is a "star dome" which, in effect, acts like the dome of the Capitol Rotunda - you can hear people whispering who are sitting ten rows from you.

*And, YES, there's WiFi in here too!  :)

Good Friday was successful - at least for those in attendance, those in the past I can't comment on.  But the music was good.  I started to go through the chord progression for "Gethsemane" and was going over the words in my head (as I forgot the music) and just went with an instrumental coupled with a little bit of "Pilate's Dream".  The words for "Gethsemane" are often a bit negative, so I decided against it.

Tomorrow - Orchestra read-through for The King and I and the Easter Vigil, which I look forward to.  For now, some shopping, cookie making and some cheese pizza.

I've called 911 and the firemen have been here and gone. When I took the garbage down to the basement around 20 minutes ago, the elevator smelled like burning wood. I rode to all the floors checking out the air quality and decided there was something burning in either the basement or the elevator shaft. The building is nearly empty: I think I'm the only tenant on the thrd floor tonight, and my super generally works his scond job at night, so, I called 911 and in about two minutes a firetruck and 5-7 firemen showed up. They checked out the building and cleared it and then cleared out. The super, luckily, was home so he was able to open basement doors for them.

While Diana, my first floor neighbor and I were waiting to learn the outcome of the building, a young lady came down the stairs with the dog from 4C! I guess my neighbor is away for Passover, possibly at his parents in Montreal, and she'as walking the dog. It's still barking too much. I feel quite informed.

Did you tell the dog-sitter that the dog barks all night long?

As for the TOD, I think I have found a new favorite John Abraham movie:
NO SMOKING.  Quite a Kafka-esque experience, right down to the lead character being named "K." Plus a wonderful Fosse inspired production number.  Not your typical Bollywood fare.
I've also experienced ENCHANTED and THE MUMMY on Blu-Ray.
I rented the Blu-Ray of THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX, and found it to be leftover RATATOUILLE.
My Doris Day boxed set arrived today, so I'll be checking out some Dodo later.

No, because there was too much going on with the firemen; she sort of sneaked out of the crowd with the dog and I was not going to wait around for her to return.

Yes i loved the gefilte fish (fried!). The weird part though is that my aunt made it but did not want to serve it at the sedar. I could not figure out why she would make something so good and then not serve it.

I wish someone had told me before the sedar because i wanted to eat it!

But i did eat some today. And my niece even liked it. In fact she loved matzah with butter on it!

Well, I've struggled internally with this for long enough - several days now - and it's time to share the bad news with you all:  I've been laid off.

My last day at work will be this coming Wednesday, April 15th.  This is totally due to business volume and not due to my job performance.  I've watched as our company divested from its parent, going from 25,000 employees worldwide to just 125 U.S. employees just a month ago, with a huge layoff within our ranks at that time, which I survived.  And a few days ago, they dropped another 16% - and this time, my luck didn't hold.  I understand the logic:  I'm the only one in my location, reporting into a group and a manager that reside in Dallas, so it was probably just a matter of time.  I will have a period where my salary will continue to be paid, and of course I can collect unemployment.  So it could be worse.  But it was not an outcome I was hoping for, obviously.  Especially since I detest interviewing.  And it turns out to be incredibly bad timing to have just purchased a new car.

This is my first layoff since I entered the workforce 24 years ago, and it will be the first time in all those years that I will wake up in the morning without a place I need to be.  So it will be interesting, certainly.   I will be job seeking, of course, but I also plan to use the time to invest in a major de-cluttering project at home, as well as getting my health and weight in better shape.  So in that sense, this is an opportunity that comes along rarely in one's adult life.

To that end, I may check be checking in here a little less frequently once this all kicks in.  Not that I don't love you all, but knowing myself the way I do, I could easily spend all day on here, procrastinating from doing the hard work that needs to be done.  So I will need to take this time and do this thing for myself.

I know it was purely a financial business decision.  And though I know it's not rational, I can't help feeling embarrassed about losing my job - like I'm a failure.   Indeed, at first I wasn't going to tell anyone at the office - just quietly disappear.  But the word seemed to get out anyway - some people let go were  actually escorted out the door immediately - and I decided it was healthier to deal with the feelings and talk to the people that I will be leaving behind.

You are all wonderfully supportive, and I do NOT want this to turn into a pity party.  Heaven knows, I still have it much better than so many people hurting out there - financially and health-wise.  But I did feel it important that all of you know what is going on with me.  So it is acknowledged, and we can all move right along.

Thanks for listening!

It may not be rational but it is very normal to be embarrassed.  Of course you shouldn’t be & please remember that when interviewing.  I hope you will receive an excellent letter of recommendation.

When he's on the phone late a night, I think with his brothers,  the conversation is about making as much money as he can.   So between sounding pushy with clients, and walking around the building with his shirt unbuttoned to his navel, he gives my the shivers.

When Keith was still in school he worked part time at night & I worked during the days.  Sometimes if I wanted to spend time with him I had to stay up late at night & get up very early in the morning for work.  Sleeping in on weekends was very important to me.  The neighbor next door tended to have parties that went rather late, and the older couple across the hall argued in the mornings.

One Sunday morning I crossed the hall wearing my pajamas, knocked on the door & asked the older couple to please keep their voices down.  They apologized profusely for waking me up (they really were very nice & the proud grandparents of a know actress).  As soon as they shut the door, before I could take the two steps back into our apartment, I heard them yelling at each other how the other one woke me up.  Keith & I just started laughing & I never complained again.

We don't need WiFi.  We can hear your computer whispering in that theater.

Today I went back to my eye doctor for a complete and extensive examination.  First of all, I was not really surprised when the good looking medical assistant that I smiled at last week, ended up being the assistant who called me in for the exam.  There seemed to be a few sparks, but once he got a look at me close-up, I am sure his curiousity was satisfied.

As for the appointment, I got home from the doctor's appointment almost three hours ago; and I still can't wrap my head around the news the doctor gave me.  He was very alarmed when I was there for my glaucoma check last week and wanted me tested completely - sooner rather than later.  He had noticed that my vision with my glasses was drastically off from the last exam.

What he found out after all of his tests is that after wearing glasses for almost all of the last thirty years; my eyesight has totally corrected itself to 20 / 20.  He told me not to bother wearing my glasses any longer and he suggested I head over to the DMV to have my driver's license changed to reflect that I don't need corrective lenses.  He gave me a new prescription for basically a pair of cheaters (due to all newspapers and books shrinking the size of their font).  He said that they would be for bifocals, but that the upper portion would be basically clear glass.  He also suggested that I not waste my money getting a new pair of glasses.

That was me about two or three weeks ago. My vacation lasted six days. Now, I have plenty to keep me busy. In fact, Paramount sent HOTEL FOR DOGS to another person, and because I have so much stacked up, I just told him to do it if he didn't want to take the trouble to fix up a package and go to the post office. Friday media check:

CD - in Richard's car we're listening to an M. C. Beaton murder mystery - don't know the title.

DVD - The Changeling

Is that Beaton book DEATH OF A WITCH?  I am just ready to start reading that book this weekend.

Yes!  That's the title I couldn't remember this morning.  Hope you enjoy it.

Next, I watched the premiere of PARKS & RECREATION. I like the cast, but the show is THE OFFICE-Lite, and I don't need another 30 minutes of viewing when another show does it so much better. I doubt I'll be returning to it.

For the first time in ages, I don't have anything in my review stack,

That was me about two or three weeks ago. My vacation lasted six days. Now, I have plenty to keep me busy. In fact, Paramount sent HOTEL FOR DOGS to another person, and because I have so much stacked up, I just told him to do it if he didn't want to take the trouble to fix up a package and go to the post office. He took me up on my offer.

They're actually doing a "special edition" of this for me that I'm going to surprise the kids with--the BD will have a pic of BeeGee and Blanche on it, plus somehow they're going to be in the film and/or trailer, I'm not quite sure how it works.  The Paramount rep emailed me last week that it's ready, so I guess I'll be getting it next week.

And I concluded my evening of viewing with tonight's GHOST WHISPERER. I was a bit disappointed with the episode. I guess I didn't much care for the woman in distress, and her 180 degree about-face just seemed very manufactured and phony to me. Usually this show leaves me with a lump in my throat and eyes brimming with tears. Not tonight.

And I wanted more about Jim/Sam, too.

Congratulations, Tom!  You can show the cute young assistant the new sexy you without glasses!

That isn't exactly what I wanted to show him.   ::)

I need to get some new specs myself and am overdue for an eye exam. Same for me, too. There's no way my vision has corrected itself over the years. I'm still as blind as a bat in my right eye.

Tonight I was cleaning out my car in the driveway (boy did I need to do that) and my little neighbor across the street, Brianna - around age 4 or 5ish who isn't allowed to cross the street by herself yelled "Hey Priscilla, come over here"  so I did.

She proceeded to dump a box of sidewalk chalk out on the driveway and said "want to help me draw?"  I can't remember the last time someone asked me to draw on the sidewalk, so I said "Sure".  I drew an Easter bunny, an Easter basket, an Easter egg and a hopscotch game for Brianna.  She was thrilled. She wanted me to draw her outline, so I did and she colored in the hair and was drawing in a face.  It was fun.

After I went back to cleaning my car, she was outside with her mom saying "Priscilla drew a bunny and a basket, and an egg" as she pointed them all out.  It was cute.

I haven't seen the girls much all winter. While I was sitting drawing, Brianna grabbed me from the back and leaned over and stared at my face. I said "What are you doing" she said "Looking at you. Your name is Priscilla, isn't it?  You look different."  I told her that's because I've lost weight and she looked different because she is growing up.  She smiled and went to work on her coloring.

I just finished watching the 1994 movie GREEDY with Michael J Fox and Kirk Douglas. It is to Charles Dickens' comic MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT what CLUELESS is to Jane Austen's EMMA, and I found it very funny and very rude. All of the family brouhaha about getting their hands on Douglas' fortune and their fears it would go to Olivia d'Abo was as accurate as the behavior of the Macbeths and their fear my dad was going to leave everything to his girlfriend Lucille. I think tomorrow I shall go over to Holy Trinity Church and say a few prayers for my dad.

Good night, all!

I'm torn between TWINE and Goldeneye.  Generally, I've found the third outing by any Bond actor to be their best outing.  (Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me, TWINE.)

Just finished watching Quantum.  The editing is terrible, too scattered and choppy.  The plot is... uh, plotty.  Waiting for number three.

I think we were all surprised that our first tech went as well as it did tonight.  Even our post-rehearsal production meeting did not run as long as it "should" have.  And since we were able to get some initial spacing work done on "Springtime" at the end of tonight's rehearsal, we should be able to run Act Two tomorrow afternoon, and then a full run-thru tomorrow night.  :)

I've always been one to check out "what came before" - I, too, am "weird" that way - but I also understand how some people just seem to live "in the now".  Especially when it comes to music.  And even moreso when it comes to "musical theatre".

For many young(er) people, their "world" started with either Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Rent, or Wicked.  However, they also seem to know the other shows that came out around that time. A lot of the "current stuff" has been written by people who may have not even had a show on Broadway yet: Scott Alan (http://www.scottalan.net/), Andrew Lippa (http://www.andrewlippa.com/), Joe Iconis (http://www.mrjoeiconis.com/), Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (http://www.pasekandpaul.com/), Kait Kerrigan & Brian Lowdermilk (http://www.kerrigan-lowdermilk.com/), and other writers.  I'm always amazed at just how popular some of their works are among "the youngsters". I have to routinely check into YouTube to see what the newest and hottest "unknown" song is just so that I have the gist of it in my ear if I should ever see the music placed in front of me at an audition.

And then there are the pop/rock, indie rock, hip-hop, rap, house music, etc. devotees.  They seem to know each and every song of each and every band out there.  Do I know all about those artists? No. But they do!

Would it be a good thing if the younger generation explored the music of their parents' and grandparents' generations? Yes. But if they seem to be on top of everything happening now, there's really nothing wrong with that either.  There are millions of hours of music out there to listen to, but only so many hours in a day.

Do you know all of the songs and artists on the current Billboard Top Ten?

*And don't get me started on the whole "musical theatre came from operetta and opera" kerfuffle.

Oh... And the car "adventure" continues...

I drive the "new" car to the theater and park in the lot.  At the first break, the director comes up to and says that she noticed that the rear, passenger side tire was flat.  Hmmm...  Luckily, the shop had an air compressor, and they were able to pump the tire back up.  -So far, it still seems to be "full" - no slow leak.  But that might change come morning.

And then when I drove home, I noticed that the passenger side front headlight is out too. OY!

And there's currently no windshield wiper fluid in the reservoir either.

After tonight's tech, I headed back over to FIG for a nice post-first-tech bite to eat.  I finally tried their White Shrimp and Radicchio Salad - AMAZING! For my "dessert" tonight, I tried the current Cheese Plate - another scrumptious platter, all domestic cheeses.  And to accompany that, I had a snifter of their house-infused Pear Brandy (brandy, bosc pears, vanilla beans, star anise - so smoooooth).

"Michael" was tending bar tonight, and it turns out that he was one of the original founders of FIG - and he's also the one who developed their cocktail and wine list. He's also the one "responsible" for the Pear Brandy, as well as the remnants of a Cherry Brandy that was sitting in a mason jar behind the decanter for the Pear Brandy.  His family is from Teaneck, NJ, but he grew up in Center City, Kentucky as well as a few other places.  He was a History major in college, and then went on to teach English and History at one of the larger high schools in Charleston.  He was also a football and basketball coach at the high school.  He then started doing some bartending during the off season, and he eventually went into mixology full-time.  A truly varied and rich life.

*He also has the uncanny knack of guessing from where people came from based on how they speak.  There was a couple sitting next to me who were visiting from Chapel Hill, however, they were not from Chapel Hill. He was able to tell that the husband was originally from Illinois - northern(!) Illinois - and that his wife was from central Kentucky.

**And he also topped of my brandy gratis tonight too. :)

***And it turned out that his former girlfriend lives just a few blocks from my place in NYC. :-\ ::)

Great news, TCB!!

It's been a couple of years since I've gotten my eyes checked, but I haven't noticed any change in my vision...that I've noticed. :)

I went to a local production of "Loot" tonight and it was quite good. :) It was performed at a store-front theater called The Midnight Sun and there were 42 chairs...I counted.  There were seven people in the cast (including the live actress playing the dead body!), however there were only eight people in the audience...including the director.  Oh, well.  We all enjoyed it.  I may go back and see it again. :D

The original show is like a woman's version of "Oz."

And since we're so close...
