Well, you've read the notes, the notes tied the knot, and now it is time for you to post until the married cows come home.

It's not JUST a Sunday or even a Sundae - it's EASTER SUNDAY.  Let's get out our gaily-colored Easter eggs and do the Bunny Hop.  Let's celebrate Easter as never before and let's celebrate never before as Easter.

Quote
You mean from the Sherman Brothers album I sort of produced?  If so, wouldn't it be nice to hear the other half of the orchestration?  As most know, I did not mix the album, and the ASS who did couldn't find the second pass of the orchestra and therefore left it off the entire album, i.e. half the orchestration.  That and the fact that the ASS used full takes of the singers, usually the first or second take, instead of comping the vocal to make the best take.  The album is a travesty.

That's the one. . .
I'm not as fond of the album as a whole, but most of the vocals are quite good.
I'd love to hear a better mixed, better orchestrated version of the whole.
As always, the songs chosen for each singer are more than appropriate.
The album has always struck me as incomplete.

and on that note,

HAPPY EASTER TO ONE AND ALL!

I listened to the TWO FOR THE TEETER TOTTER last night and it is indeed a sublime and lovely score.  Mr Previn can certainly write music!  I am at a disadvantage because I am NOT familiar with the film, so I cannot match the images to the melodies, but it is lovely.

The main titles start the CD off beautifully.  And the next few tracks take you right along.  But starting from track 5 to the end of the CD, I was very moved and intrigued.

Yes it is a beautiful work and I am glad I bought it, it will be played many times at home and in the car.

And I might even watch the movie - even though a "kooky" Shirley MacLaine gets on my very last nerve.

BK: (Or anyone who has seen BRAINSTORM on DVD)

I am curious about the transfer of BRAINSTORM.

If I remember correctly the film was mainly filmed in 35mm and the BRAINSTORM sequences were film in 70mm. All I actually do remember that the screen size for the two sequences were different.

Now if this is so, on the DVD is there a difference between the two? Or is formatted for widescreen TV and there is no difference.

The original DVD certainly had the differeing ratios, and in the theater, this was VERY effective.

I think bk got the chronology right as well as I remember. Natalie died during the production of the movie, but the director said most of her work was done and what wasn't could be covered with outtakes. I agree that the film seems just a bit lacking, but much of it is very entertaining.

I still have a fair amount of work to do on SIN CITY. I have the 147 minute unrated, expanded edition to watch which I'll do this afternoon. There is also an interactive comic book with this cut that I have no idea what it will be like.

The press release that I have says there are four more featurettes which I didn't find on the disc. They aren't listed on the back of the case in the liner notes either, so I have to believe the press release was written before the discs actually went to the plant. There must not have been room for them.

I really don't understand why a nonmusical film of GREY GARDENS was made. We have the original documentaries with the real people. Now, if they had done the musical version, that would have brought something new to the table.

Of course, they couldn't do the musical of GREY GARDENS with these actresses. I'm not sure either of them can sing. Drew was the only one dubbed in Woody Allen's EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU, and Jessica, of course, used Patsy Cline's original recordings in SWEET DREAMS.

Good morning, all! Yes, BK, you did spy an elmore around 3 am EST because the dog did not stop barking until  then. So, I fell asleep sometime after that. And I am not at all happy about it.

I had a strange dream involving my friend Greg MacKellan, who started San Francisco's 42nd STREET MOON company  several years ago. I had met Greg sround 1988, when he was living in Los Angeles and staged a production of my JUBILEE restoration. In my dream, Greg had lost a bit of weight, which has nothing to do with my dream, but through some project or other, I was working with Greg and reunited with someone I had met through him ages ago, around 1990, and had a huge crush on (I cannot remember the name!). There was a lot of flirting before my realization in the course of the dream that this romance would never work out: I cared too much, always had, and if the other party had really cared at all, ever, we would have been a couple a long time ago before we were too set in our ways. I was very sad when I woke. Of course, in the awake world, I clearly didn't care that much: I can't remember the name!

Today, Ron Raines' concert sketch and a few other odd jobs around the apartment before I get too sleepy.

I think I will have some free time tonight to watch something for fun. I have another James Bond on Blu-ray. I have several other recent acquisitions on Blu-ray like MILK and THE ROAD WARRIOR. I still have one film in the last Alice Faye box that I haven't watched and all but one in the Carmen Miranda box that have gone untouched. I still have two films in the Warner Homefront box that I haven't gotten to as well as two remaining Warner Archive DVDs to check out.

So, lots of choices for my viewing enjoyment tonight. And I might just ditch them all and watch EASTER PARADE in its gorgeous Ultra-Resolution prime on DVD.

Shayne, the new Brainstorm DVD attempts to replicate the shifting ratios - the non-Brainstorm scenes (where someone is hooked into the machine) are 1:85 letterboxed in the middle of your widescreen TV.  The Brainstorm scenes are anamorphic scope.  It works fine.

Well, let's hope that the new HBO film brings the original documentary and the musical version to the attention of those viewers who may have not have previously known of their existence.

I just talked to a friend who went to the screening in NYC last night, and he was very pleasantly surprised.  He did admit that he went in not expecting to like it, but he said the performances of Drew Barrymoore and Jessica Lange were quite good. He also liked the "distance" that the recreation of these ladies' lives provided for the viewer.  He didn't feel like an "uncomfortable voyeur" like he did when he watched the original documentary.  He also appreciated how the filmmaker made sure to tell the story of both Edie's - not making Big Edie a supporting character.

DR Jose, I have Carvel’s chocolate crunchies in the house but no ice cream.

Last night we went to friends for dinner and I was asked to make my sour cream cookies.  I also baked oatmeal cookies with Heath toffee pieces.  They were both a bit hit.  Our neighbor is dating a chef and he made a shrimp & scallop curry.   While I was not at all tempted to taste the shrimp & scallops I must say the dish looked beautiful.  I had a perfectly cooked piece of halibut & my own little dish of curry with julienne snow peas.  The curry was suburb.

Bruce I remember a discussion we had regarding your “contented” state with your marriage, more of an acceptance of what it was than joy in it.  I kept saying that wasn’t right & how could you settle for that.  Now I understand you were making it work for your daughter.

DR Charles Pogue I completely disagree with you that 20 is too young to be married.  Keith now regrets he made me wait until we were that old instead of getting married at 18 or 19.  We know a good number of happily married couples who where young when they married.  It is about marrying someone you passionately love, respect and like.  This person should be your best friend.  If you don’t have all of these things to begin with there is nothing to get you through the difficult times.

Hello! I'm here, I'm here. Never went far.  Thank you, everyone for the warm welcomes yesterday.  Read through the thread without posting so I can get a feel for what all goes on over here.

Had a lovely day yesterday, Saturday yoga always makes me want to sleep all afternoon. Instead of napping I went and got waxed which woke me right up (when going for TMI, go all the way...that's what I always say), finished my taxes (woohoo!), made delicious veggie pizza for dinner, and reorganized my knitting bag.

Re: Today's...column(? blog post? what are they called over here?), I love few things more than a good breakup story.  I was married for a while, too, and it ended sooner but about as well as this one did. We still share an apartment because of the cats. They seem to understand. :)

I am very happy to learn the captain of the highjacked ship has been rescued from the pirates. I am also very very very tired and draggy today.

What have I accomplished today? The following:
  1. I wrote a sketch for one of Ron Raines' numbers in the medley
  2. I mended a tear in a blanket
  3. I wrote some emails concerning John McGlinn's estate
  4. I listened to Handel's MESSIAH
  5. I tidied the apartment

I want a nap!

Jane, exactly.  I was able to be married for fourteen years because it was "nothing."  Not good, but not bad - didn't fight, didn't scream, it just was a bore.  I would have ended it years before I did had we fought or screamed or stuff like that.  But, I don't regret it because it was the right thing to do until my daughter was of a certain age.  Then it was full speed ahead.

I'm still pissed he is no longer here.  Not because he died, but because he was a stubborn Italian that was never going to listen to anyone tell him what to do.  He did life his way, was always right, and that was that.  You would have thought I figured that out in the the 20 years before marriage.  I'm not that bright am I.

Must go, must do laundry for work tomarrow.

Hope everyone has a sunny afternoon.

I watched The Ten Commandments on TV last night.  There's something about the old big budget Hollywood movies that always makes me watch them.  I'm not a fan of Charlton Heston's personal life.

While I ate lunch I watched Friday night's FLASHPOINT. This show usually has me ending up either in tears or close to it. Today was no exception. (COLD CASE used to have this same effect on me.) I like that even with these cops trying their hardest, things don't always work out with a happy ending for all concerned. Makes it seem much more realistic.

Then I watched the extended version of SIN CITY. Honestly, I preferred the theatrical cut. The extended version allows the viewer to place the four segments in whatever order he wants, but I like the way the theaterical version arranged the stories, especially the hit man intro and coda and the splitting of Bruce Willis' story to bookend the other two complete stories since his story takes eight years to complete.

I then watched the one other bonus feature I hadn't gotten to yet, an interactive game based on the graphic novel using the remote like a game controller. After I got killed on the first caper, I stopped playing. I got the gist of what this bonus was all about.

To finish up my afternoon, I put THE SILENCE OF THE  LAMBS on Blu-ray back in the player. I still had about 40 minutes left, and since I needed to get upstairs and complete my review, I only watched about 20 minutes of it. I'll finish it when I go back down this evening.

A couple of years ago, I did the silent BEN-HUR on Easter Sunday and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I think it's going to be EASTER PARADE for me. On DVD, of course.

I have some tidying up of the computer files and then I'm heading down to clean the master bath, put away the already folded alundry, and then back to the viewing room for the rest of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and then EASTER PARADE. I might even have time for something else before tonight's THE TUDORS. We'll see.

Elmore, I did The Sound of Music with Greg in 2003.  He was nice to work with.  I've also seen some of the work he's done at 42nd Street Moon, it's rather hit and miss depending on the show, of course.

I've been trying to nap and failing. I'm thinking about putting the DVD of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT on and laughing for a while; I'm too fried to accomplish much else. I just canceled getting together with my friend Alan to give him a book because I'm to tired to move but not too tired to pass out.

Last week my neighbor called and asked me to come over for Easter dinner.  OK we live 10 feet apart, but he has cancelled 6 out of the last 10 dinners.   So I never know till about 20 minutes before going over there. I know he had brunch with his family this morning, and then went to the salon for whatever clients booked for today (he makes so much money) and then he'll go home have several vodka's and decide if he wants to cook or not.

I agreed to buy the ham (I want to make a huge vegtable soup with the bone) so that was OK.  It's so beautiful outside I'd rather be at the beach than waiting to take the ham out of the refrig at 4:00.

Jane,

I agree with you about the reasons for marrying someone and there are always exceptions to every rule, but generally I find folks in their late teens or early twenties, not yet through college, haven't figured out who the Hell they are yet, let alone a life partner.  Julieanne and I were college sweethearts, but we broke up, and then got back  together several years later after we both had sown our wild oats and made our mistakes.  If we had stayed together in college, despite our passion for each other, we probably would have killed each other and it would have ended badly.  We both needed to settle into ourselves first.

Fashion victim moment o'the day:  I had to rise very early today to get ready to play two mammoth services.  I put on a sort of brownish-golden shirt and I found a very nice Adolfo tie made of sort of Pollock-esque "blotches", which, while mostly bluish and reddish, had one goldenrod one that was the exact color of my shirt, so I thought it would look great.  When I got to church, more fully awake and in better light, I realized the goldenrod blotch was a food stain.  Oh, well.

JR, belated answer from yesterday--FF did Present Laughter much later, that was the one she did with Reginald Gardner probably circa 1960.  She did Private Lives in either 1957 or 1958 (probably 1958, now that I think about it, though)--I have reviews somewhere.

MattH, I watched caught the first episodes of both PARKS AND REC. and SOUTHLAND.

Loved SOUTHLAND....some really good actors in that, particularly Regina King and the guy who plays the rookie. Wasn't expecting the final scene, but that sealed the deal that this will be a show I will watch regularly. It reminds me greatly of ADAM 12, but with more regular characters and it makes a nice replacement for LIFE ON MARS.

PARKS AND REC. shows promise, but it really is a THE OFFICE clone. I will continue to watch it for a while before I make up my mind. I keep remembering that when I rented season 1 of THE OFFICE in order to catch up on the seasons that I missed, and after watching the first several episodes I thought to myself "If I had started out with this show when if first began I would likely have not gotten past the first two episdoes." THE OFFICE really got better in later seasons, I think.

My neighbor above me is indeed in Toronto for Passover. He's coming back tomorrow. The dog continues to bark. Interestingly, the neighbor above the dog is not home so I cannot learn if the barking is also bothering him, nor is the tenant in the apartment next to the dog. The tenant across the hall from the dog, who says he can't hear the barking seems offended that i've complained to the landlord.

I think one of the reasons Julieanne and I got back together (aside from the fact that if there are such things as soul-mates, I suppose we qualify) is that we both knew each other's angels and devils and were probably too tired to train anybody else in how to grapple with them.  We had developed a short-hand.

I'm back from a lovely Easter/Greek Orthodox Palm Sunday/Passover/Sunday gathering.  There were about 25 people who showed up, and we all had a wonderful time.  There was some great food: Turkey, Ham, Green Beans, Creamed Corn, Cheesey Potatoes, Fresh Rolls, Salad, and a whole slew of desserts.  One of the cast members even brought some Matzoh Brei and Gefilte Fish.  The Matzoh Brei was good.  I didn't go near the Gefilte Fish. ;)

In other news...

It seems that Amazon.com has "deranked" a whole slew of titles, as well as pulled them from the search results.  The reason: possibly Adult, offensive content.  Consequently, any texts dealing with GLBT issues have been pulled - unless they are already available in a Kindle edition.  Additionally, works by authors such as James Baldwin to John Barrowman have been "pulled".

I'm sure there will be lots of press in the coming days, but, in the meantime, here's an "open letter" from BookSquare.com which explains some of what happened today.

DR elmore - Do you have and can you sleep with earplugs?  -Have your tired using some "white noise" to mask some of the barking?  -Just turn your TV to a "snow" channel, turn the volume down to a non-distracting level, then throw a blanket over the screen to block the light.

OK... Time for me to get ready to head out to the Easter Lunch/Dinner/Egg Hunt.  -Apparently, the two daughters of the director colored about 100 eggs and hid them all over their house.  I suspect hilarity will ensue.

Laters...

I certainly hope that Jose's hosts carefully counted and recounted the number of eggs the two daughters have hidden.  I would hate to have one missing hard boiled egg remained unaccounted.

DR TCB - All the hard-boiled eggs stayed in the basket on the kitchen tables.  All the ones that the girls hid were the plastic ones which they filled with various goodies.  It was sort of like Halloween all over again!  ;)

The eight-year old daughter of our director established the rules for the Easter Egg Hunt. She explained that there were two "special" eggs which contained a set of directions which had to be followed in order to properly claim the "prize".  Additionally, there were two "silver" eggs - they were wrapped in aluminum foil - which would determine who would be the "Easter King" and "Easter Queen".  Of course, two guys found the Silver eggs.  ;)

*And everyone's "favorite" rule for today's Easter Egg Hunt: You may wrestle for the eggs. -From the mouths of babes. ::)

One of the great things about Philly is all these tree-lined back streets with old, restored single-family homes--a lot of which proudly hoist various flags of countries and universities.

Oh, well.

So... I guess that's why Betsy dresses the kids in the morning for school.

Hi Jose, nice day you had. :)

It really was a nice day.  I got to sleep in. The weather was gorgeous! I refilled the car's windshield wiper fluid reservoir. I figured out how to lock and unlock the car doors without setting off the car alarm. I got to hang out with some great people. I got to eat some great food.  And I had some Carvel Ice Cream Cake! :)

Ate a weird meal at Hugo's - once again they've taken a dish they did really well, the mac and cheese, which used corkscrew pasta and three cheeses and was quite one of the best things they did, and completely changed it - it's now "shells" much heavier cheese, and you can get it with porcini mushrooms and peas, which is what I had today.  It's not nearly as good - and I shan't be having it again.

I had quite a full evening of very different entertainment selections.

I started with EASTER PARADE. I've watched it umpteen times and always enjoy it, but I always wish there had been some multidirectional sound stems available for it so it could have had more than a mono soundtrack on the DVD. I do so enjoy those fabulous orchestrations and vocal arrangements when there's some heft to them in the audio design.

Next, I went dramatic and watched THE DIVORCEE on DVD from the FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD collection Vol. 2. I always enjoy Norma Shearer, and she won the Oscar for this (though I think she did more accomplished acting the next year in A FREE SOUL though she lost the Oscar that year to Marie Dressler in MIN AND BILL.)

I believe my work project tomorrow will be Criterion's IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES. I have both the DVD and Blu-ray versions to review, and I will be starting with the regular DVD.

On THE LAST METRO, I started with the Blu-ray, and I don't think that was quite fair to the standard though I tried to be as objective as I could. It's much harder to adjust one's expectations when he's watched a film at 1080p and then rewatches it at 480p.

So that's my assignment for myself for tomorrow. I've never seen the film (though I've obviously heard much about it down through the decades), so it should be an adventure.

Got caught up on some Netflix movies...TELL ME IN THE SUNSHINE (1965) was very interesting and was written and directed by Steve Cochran, who I like very much. It was quite low budget but I enjoyed it.  The leading lady was Shary Marshall who I remember having a small role in one of my favorite science fiction films, PANIC IN YEAR ZERO. She is sooooo beautiful and qutie a good star. I am suprised she didn't have a bigger career.

The other film was Ozu's GOOD MORNING (1959) which was a cute Japanese comedy. I run hot and cold on Ozu films and this was Ok. However the littlest kid in the film really stole the show and made the movie for me.

Open Letter to Amazon Regarding Recent Policy Changes (http://booksquare.com/open-letter-to-amazon-regarding-recent-policy-changes/)

This is unconscionable!  This is censorship, plain and simple, simple and plain!  I work at a library and we order things from Amazon that we can't get from other places.  If we (anyone) can't find them, how can they be ordered??  This is stupid, Stupid, STUPID!!

And it could end up being a PR nightmare for Amazon. :P
