My favorite childhood TV shows were THE LONE RANGER, SUPERMAN, CHEYENNE & HIGHWAY PATROL, which was produced by my cousin, Fred Ziv.

Unfortunately, by the time that I was ready to journey to Los Angeles (from Seattle), he had retired, so I no longer had a show business "in".

Does THE MAGIC GARDEN count for the topic of the day?  I didn't watch the show that often, but I loved loved loved the theme song.

Locally produced shows that I remember were

Magistrate's Court
Family Court

These were scripted shows as opposed to shows like Judge Judy

People in Conflict (A group of people sitting around a table with a moderator trying to work out problems)

Also scripted show years ahead of shows like Intervention.

They were fun to watch because you would see people that you would know. I auditioned for Family Court. They promised me a run of 5 shows but the story was never produced. However my Mother was hired playing a mother of a girl who was caught shop lifting. "I can't believe Sissy would do such a thing" was one of her lines. Don't know why I am remember that!

DR DRUXY's cousin was Fred Ziv?  Oh my, Ms Allison Hayes made guest appearances on several ZIV production during the 1950's.

I liked the local movie programs especially Frances Farmer Presents and Sammy Terry (the Saturday night horror movie) and Selwyn who dressed up in safari attire and introduced Tarzan and Bomba movies.

Good morning, all! I had a quiet day puttering about the apartment ysterday after the recital. I believe the only thing I watched of note was the current episode of Masterpiece Theatre LITTLE DORRIT, which was very moving last night with the reappearance of John Chivery, the jailer's son who loves Amy Dorrit, and Mr Dorrit's approaching dementia. I do love the Circumlocution Office and its governmental ineptitude.

This morning, I have a date with Jim Morgan of the York Theatre to discuss a project, and after that, more work on THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.

TOD: Outside of Ruth Lyons' 50-50 CLUB at noon daily, I have little memory of  local programming in Cincinnati. I rememebr sone country-western Grand Ole Opry ripoff on Saturday nights, but that's about it. DR Charles Pogue will remember programs I've totally forgotten!

I, too, BK, miss the local programming.  The last two years of high school I probably did on five hours asleep at night, because I was up watching the late show movie that usually ran till one or one-thirty.  But then I had to stay up for the sign-off and the  HIGH FLIGHT poem.

My favourite local character (and Ginny and elmore might also remember him) was Bob Shreve, who hosted on the weekends, Schoenling All-Nite Theatre...Schoenling was a beer company.  He was kind of a  Soupy Sales character with a raft of silly characters and catch-phrases.  The movies were always kind of tatty, so you waited for the commercial breaks where Bob would cut up and do his schtick.  I think there is a website devoted to him.  A legend in Cincy.

We also had a local talent show on either Saturday or Sunday afternoon hosted by Len Goorian who had started as a ballroom dancer, I believe, before he went into broadcasting.  He still has a radio show on WMKV where he plays Latin music (apparently he worked a lot of cruise ships down South American way and has a collection of Latin Music).

Cincinnati was the home of Taft Broadcasting and a lot of local television was produced that also went out regionally.  An icon was Ruth Lyons...who hosted a midday talk and variety show with a live band (my guitar teacher at Wurlitzer music used to occasionally play on her show), with a funny band director, and several singers (Bob Braun was one...who later had his own talk show...he may have taken over hers after she died...and had a record that once got him on American Bandstand).  There is a book out now on Ruth called BEFORE OPRAH...and it's kind of true, she doing Oprah before Oprah.  Tickets for the studio audience sold out months in advance and it was broadcast all over Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

We also had a horror movie host, The Cool Ghoul.

elmore, I see we both remember Ruth Lyons' 50-50 club!  Why was it called that anyway?  I remember she used to always have the manager of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team on and give him advice on how to run the club.

The Grand Ole Opry rip-off was also a WLW, Taft show...Midwestern Hayride with Bonnie Lou, sort of Dolly Parton without the boobs,  if memory serves.  Kenny Price was a local fixture on it who later appeared on Hee-Haw as a regular.

TOD:

I'm mot sure if local Philadelphia station KYW was the home or the original EVENING MAGAZINE or not, but I did the show when it first began.  The stories were strictly local to the Philly region.  And they twice covered theatre productions done at my college, Rutgers/Camden.  Eventually, as the show began being produced in other markets, someone decided that it would be cheaper to homoginize the features across the board, so the show slowly lost its local flavor.

You know what I miss?  I miss New York channel 9 WOR.  Even in the days before cable, channel 9's broadcast signal would sometimes reach South Jersey and I felt like it was a magic window to the goings-on in NYC.  When we finally got cable, Channel 9 was part of the package (we also got NY Channel 11, but WOR always felt much more part of the street action of NYC.)   Eventually, Channel 9 WOR became SuperStation 9 or something like that and lost a lot of its flavor, and has long since been dropped altogether from Comcast.  It's too bad--I miss the annual KING KONG broadcast every Thanksgiving...

So I psyched myself up and suited myself up, and got myself down to the local school track to begin... a JOGGING program.    :D

And once I got there, discovered that there is no "trespassing" allowed on school property from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.   Duh!  I should have known that.

I know that I can probably jog anywhere, but I figured the softer track would be good [and more forgiving] for a beginner.  So now I just have to maintain my willpower for another few hours, and try again.

Favorite syndicated shows:

THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN unquestionably my favorite. I also remember HIGHWAY PATROL and BOSTON BLACKIE and THE LONE RANGER.

Locally, there were kiddie shows in the afternoons on both local stations. One showed "The Little Rascals" while the other showed cartoons.

There was a Friday night horror show that ran for years. When it eventually went off the air, it was replaced by the station playing old serials like FLASH GORDON and CAPTAIN AMERICA. After those were played out, they used to program old black and white series. In a typical evening we'd have, say, BURNS AND ALLEN, OUR MISS BROOKS, and PRIVATE SECRETARY.

Sunday afternoons there was JUNGLE THEATER which would show the TARZAN movies. When those were repeated over and over, they switched to JUNGLE JIM and then BOMBA. This is how I saw all of the Weismeuller and Lex Barker Tarzan movies.

After the TARZAN and other safari movies had run for years, they were replaced by DETECTIVE THEATER which is where I saw all of the Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes movies.

DR DAW - I remember driving around Richmond a few times trying to find an open running track during the day.  Eventually, I found that the tracks at the University of Richmond were accessible.  -At least when their track team was not training.  However, when they were training, I would just watch. ;)

I did try to some of the high school tracks, but they were usually in use during the day for gym class.  *You may want to see if they restrict use of the track if school activities are going on.  In the meantime, see if you can find a park in your area that has a fitness track - one of those routes with the various "stations" (pull-ups, sit-ups, stretching, etc.).  You don't have to do the stops, but those tracks are usually one mile or one-and-a-half miles long.  Makes it much easier to keep track of your distance.

Unless something more pressing arrives today, my work project for the day will be the horror thriller THE UNINVITED which was released earlier in the year. I know nothing about this other than it didn't do very well at the box-office.

I'm hoping it's more thrills and not a lot of gore.

TOD - Having grown up in Detroit, my memories are of Soupy Sales, the George Pierrot travel programs, and a local weatherman named Sonny Elliott.

DR Charles Pogue - that new book about Ruth Lyons is getting major coverage here in the Cincinnati area.  I'm hoping to go next week to Joseph-Beth Booksellers to see Shelley Bamberger do her portrayal of Ruth at a book event.  My friend Becky and I used to see Shelley in musicals on the Showboat Majestic.

Even though we didn't get broadcasts of Ruth Lyons' show in Detroit, I knew about her from my grandmother and aunt, who lived in Indianapolis and were great fans.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The only shows that comes to mind are a series of various programs and briefs spots that featured Dick Dyszel, otherwise known as "Captain 20". They ran on Channel 20, WDCA in Washington, DC.  It was sort of like a version of Bozo the Clown but for a slightly older audience.  Captain 20 would host the afternoon block of programming which was "dominated" by "Star Blazerrs" (http://www.starblazers.com/home.php) for the longest time.

There was also the "Captain 20 Show" which had an in-studio office.  -My friend, Chris, actually appeared on the show once, and ended up pissing off "Captain 20" since he knew the answer to a "Star Trek" trivia question - thus ruining the set-up to a particular segment.  He didn't like being upstage by a nine-year old. ;)

OH! Lo and behold, he even has a website: Captain 20 (http://captain20.com/)

Ruth Lyons was very bossy; she gave advice to the weather man! I never knew why it was called the 50-50 club, perhaps because it was at noon?  Tickets were sold out years in advance; when my mother and her sisters were on the show, it's my memory that they waited 2-3 years before the tickets arrived.

Her band leader was a very gay man named Cliff Lash, and I used to hear bits of gossip about him in the 1970s. There was a gay weather man on one of the Dayton stations who got mugged cruising the levee and he wasn't waiting for the Robert E Lee. People I worked with in a dinner theatre outside Dayton called him the Weather Witch.

For the life of me I have no memory of Bob Shreve at all, or the Cool Ghoul.

Midwestern Hayride! I hated that show and I vaguely remember Bonnie Lou. I also remember something dreadful called "Pantomime Hit Parade," in which people lipsynched to current Top 40 numbers. Oy! Scraping the bottom of the barrel to entertain. It was like a bad drag act without the drag or intentional humor.

In the first instance, are you referring to WLOS' "Shock Theater"?  Many a Friday night I would be allowed to stay up to watch "Shock Theater" with the understanding that I'd still get up at my regular time and any nightmares I might have because of the movies I watched would be my personal responsibility.

WFBC had afternoon show called "Monty's Rascals" with host Monty Dupuy and his sidekick Mr. Doohickey, played by Stowe Hoyle.  Dupuy was the station's meteorologist and Hoyle was also a weather man.  This show gave me my "Little Rascals" fix during my teenage years.

No, DR Ron, we didn't get WLOS when I was a kid (only later with a rotor antenna in the mid-60s). Our Shock Theater came on Channel 3 (WBTV). There was a semi-campy ghoul host for awhile, but I don't recall him lasting all that long. The station usually just ran the movies at 11:30. I was always planning to stay up to see them, but most of the time, I'd fall asleep before 11:30 arrived. Or if I made it, I'd fall asleep during the movie.

This all reminds me of a local urban rumor story that very strongly made the rounds in Philly during the late 80s about then-local KWY weatherman Jerry Penacoli (the guy who is currently working on Extra.)  It was the same story that was attached to Richerd Gere, but in this case it was a gerbil.  Of course, everyone knew a nurse that was actually in the emergency room the night Jerry was brought in.  To KYW's credit, they rode out the storm with him and he stayed with them for quite a few years after the whole thing blew over.

We are currently watching season 1, disc 3 of CHEYENNE.  I'm really enjoying Clint Walker.  He is beautiful to listen to and watch.

Unless something more pressing arrives today, my work project for the day will be the horror thriller THE UNINVITED which was released earlier in the year. I know nothing about this other than it didn't do very well at the box-office.

I'm hoping it's more thrills and not a lot of gore.

I read a few good reviews and am looking forward to reading your opinion.

DR Jeane we didn’t go to Farmer’s Market very often unless we had out of town company.  We usually had DuPars boysenberry syrup in the house.  It is still my favorite, unfortunately they don’t bottle it anymore.  My brother said he has eaten at Talpa a few times.  There are other Mexican restaurants he prefers.   Keith & my favorite is El Cholo’s.

There is a pretty good Falafel place in Westwood.  We go there on nice evenings (you don’ want to eat inside) & sit outside.  Since the outside eating area isn’t enclosed Sherlock can sit with us.

MGM/UA wouldn't have rights to "Up the Down Staircase", would they?  That's a Warner Brothers title.

Well my soundtrack LP is on UA.

Oh, yes, AMOS AND ANDY. Long before political correctness, AMOS AND ANDY was a great favorite at our house.

I've said this before, it was a great show & it should be politically correct to watch it.  After watching a special on the show a few years back, which included most of the episodes.  While many of the characters were lacking in a certain amount of intelligence (sound like many shows today), Amos was rather the opposite.  There were blacks represented in numerous fields as lawyers, nurses & I believe doctors.

Speaking of pantomime, or at least mime, we are preparing for Betsy's cousin Daniel Stein coming to PDX to do his off Broadway hit "Timepiece," and then stay for a Master Class, like the ones he teaches at Juilliard.

Look what I found on NetFlix :)

The Amos 'n Andy Show  (9-Disc Series) (1952)

"Adapted from a popular radio minstrel comedy serial, this influential sitcom centers on Amos Jones (Alvin Childress) and Andy Brown (Spencer Williams), two ex-farmhands trying to make their way in the hustle and bustle of big-city Chicago. One of the earliest television shows to feature African-American actors, this landmark comedy series sparked a wave of controversy due to what many saw as its unflattering depiction of black characters."

I was taken entirely uanawares - I went to bed- quite late as matter of fact on Tuesday feeling fine.  Actually it was technically Wednesday morning when I went to bed as TCM was showing Gone With The Wind and I stayed up and watched the whole thing

When it ended at Midnight I saw the Singing in the Rain was coming on next and stayed up long enough to wacth Donald O'Connor's Make 'Em Laugh number so it was probably clsoe to 1 AM before I snuggled down in bed feeling fine

I awoke at 2 AM feeling as if I was being stabbed in the stomach and with an immediate need to void the contents of that organ

This continued until 6 AM  when the Vixter got up for breakfast and to ready herself for school

Vixdad was awakened and informed he would be doing the school driving duties and when he saw me he decided he would be stayinng home to take care of me

(GOOD DECISION VIXDAD!)

I was adamant that I was not to be brought to the ER because it was proabably just the bits of burritto I had stolen from Vixdad's Tax Bell order ( I had a couple of forkfuls of the filling) and assumed food poisoning    Te local ER is famous for leaving you on hard plastic seats in the waiting room for hours and I was sure that once my stomach was completely voided things would get better

Around midday I conceded that things were defintily going from bad to worse and that Action Must Be Taken

We called the GP who to her credit immediately came to the phone and suggested it could be related to an infection in my feeding tube and suggested rather than wasting time with her that I should go right the GI Dr -

The GI DR , to his credit, said come right down, whisked me past a full waiting room and saw me immediately and said "The feeding tube is fine but you need an immediate CAT Scan, its either gallstones or a perforation"

My money wason tehperforation since I had never had gallstone issues before andit came on so suddenly.

The ER happens to be right across the street for the GI Dr, he called and told them to expect me and Vixdad dropped me off at the door and went to park the car .

There were two ladies ahead on me in line, both there to see patients and they were chatting away with each other and the receptionist until I though t I would faint and I finally said Excuse me I am going to fall down -  I don;t know what I looked like suddenly out a nowhere a wheelchair was under me and they  started asking me questions like "Can you hear me?" "Do you know where you are?" and then Vixdad was there and I was taken immediatley into the inner santum where my blood pressure and temp were taken I don't know what they were but I was moved into the inner inner sanctum wjhere the doctors are and within a half hour I was being taken for a CAT Scan and immediiately after that for a Sonogram

The next several hours is hazy  I know they gave me morphine and it didn't stop the pain so they gave me somthing else that deadend it somewhat until someone came along and touched my abdoment at which point I would scream like a stuck pig.

Now you must understand I am not a screamer.  I may moan quietly during some real bad things such as labor and some bits of chemo but for me to issue a full throated scream is unheard of so poor Vixdad was frightened to death... I am SO glad that the Vixter was not there

They announced to my surprise that I had an acute inflamed and infected gallbladder and it needed to come out immediately.  At that point I would have forfeited a limb to make the pain stop so to lose an organ I never see nor think was an easy decsion

They were trying to get me in to an OR that night but since they were concerned that teh feeding tube might cause a complication and force a full entry rather than lathroscopic (sp?) they wanted to have two surgeons on hand and couldn't manage that until around  one the next day.

(Thankfully they were able to do the less invasive procedure)

Somebody put something wonderful in my IV they put me a hospital room and I blessedly fell asleep

There's a Seattle version of "Evening Magazine."  I had no idea that it wasn't original to Seattle.

I did get my work project finished. I watched THE UNINVITED, a horror thriller from earlier in the year.

No wonder it wasn't more successful; it's a derivative of about every horror thriller for the last 30 years but especially Tom Tryon's THE OTHER. I understand it was actually something of an Americanized remake of a Korean film but with a fair amount of rewriting to smooth over patches in the Korean movie that the producers, directors, and screenwriter didn't feel worked right. They needed to keep writing. Parts of it still cheated with the story and were irritating. Other parts were just dull. It was only 87 minutes long, but it felt longer than that to me.

I loved "Star Blazers!"  I used to watch this in the morning before I went to middle school.  A few years ago, I bought the complete imported DVD sets.  They included the original Japanese audio tracks and no English tracks at all, but they did include English subtitles.  It's very interesting to see how the broadcast English language version was edited.  The original Japanese version was much racier. ;) Here's picture of the version that I got:

TOD

No TV then folks, radio!

Favorite local show was the Magic Lady Supper Club - whose frequent guest singer was a local Jewish boy named Eddie Fisher.

When local TV finally make its debut, one channel did stay on past the 11 o'clock news to show a late night movie; to pay the bills they had a young man hawking dinnerware - his name was Dick Ckark. That local channel also hosted an Afternoon show called "Bandstand".

To help us all keep track of TV shows, the local paper (The Philadelphia Inquirer) put out a local Sunday supplement called TV GUIDE.

I think the plots for the boys stopped making sense the last time Col. Mayer was on, and their plots have never really recovered.

Here are the new releases from the Warner Archive series:

QUALITY STREET (1937, d. George Stevens) - A woman can change a lot in 10 years. Or, in the case of Phoebe, change even more in a day. After her beau Dr. Gray returns home from a decade in the Napoleonic Wars, he’s disappointed that faithful Phoebe appears worn and unattractive. So Phoebe transforms her looks and poses as carefree, younger Livvy. Dr. Gray, unaware of the ruse, is smitten. And about to discover that the person he truly loves is Phoebe. Katharine Hepburn, her voice a youthful flutter and her hair a mass of ringlets, teams with her Alice Adams director George Stevens for this droll screen version of James M. Barrie’s play. Also among the denizens of Quality Street: Franchot Tone, Fay Bainter, Eric Blore and unbilled Joan Fontaine.

SPITFIRE (1934, d. John Cromwell) - Katharine Hepburn portrayed everything from queens to a Chinese peasant in her splendid career, but her most unusual role may just be Trigger Hicks in Spitfire. The elegant, cultured Hepburn plays an ornery, rock-chuckin’ mountain gal who finds God – and a knack for faith healing – in a pack of stolen Bible cards. But when she exercises her self-declared miraculous powers on a sick baby, the local folks figure Trigger is a force of supernatural evil. Two fine leading men, Robert Young and Ralph Bellamy, lend skilled support in a picture that’s Hepburn’s all the way: “After the story of Spitfire is forgotten, memories of Miss Hepburn’s performance will remain” (The Times (London)).

CHRISTOPHER STRONG (1933, d. Dorothy Arzner) - Katharine Hepburn made her stunning screen debut as John Barrymore’s daughter in 1932’s A Bill of Divorcement. In Christopher Strong, Hepburn’s second film and first star vehicle, the intelligent, liberated and unconventionally beautiful actress chose to play an intelligent, liberated and unconventionally beautiful aviatrix who soars into a torrid affair (with Colin Clive as a fellow aristocrat)…and crashes into unendurable heartbreak. The melodramatic story is as much keen-edged steel as tears, thanks to Hepburn’s gutsy performance and to the taut direction of Dorothy Arzner, classic Hollywood’s only major female director. Among the film’s highlights: Hepburn simply astonishing in silvery lamé heading to a costume ball as the world’s most glamorous moth.

BREAK OF HEARTS (1935, d. Philip Moeller) - Aspiring composer Constance Dane never imagined she would someday meet celebrated New York conductor Franz Roberti. Yet a love of music brings them together, and romantic love soon follows. So, too, do jealousies, human misunderstandings and artistic flareups that will test their devotion. Break of Hearts is a triple-hankie romance to swoon by, swelling with music by Bach, Brahms and other immortals and featuring two box-office legends at their most luminous. Charles Boyer essays the man-of-the-world role of Franz. And Katharine Hepburn, the camera framing and adoring her as only classic Hollywood can, offers a much-acclaimed performance that captures Constance’s freshness and fire.

A WOMAN REBELS (1936, d. Mark Sandrich) - As women, the first thing of importance is to be content to be inferior to men. Rubbish, young Pamela Thistlewaite (Katharine Hepburn) thinks, embarking on an independent life no proper Victorian would approve of, a life that includes love affairs, a child born out of wedlock, a career and national fame. An enthralling personal drama and a forceful plea for women’s rights, A Woman Rebels showcases a Hepburn radiant with beauty and youth, as natural with battle-of-the-sexes banter as with courage in the face of heartbreak.

THE LITTLE MINISTER (1934, d. Richard Wallace) - In 1840, young Gavin Dishart (John Beal) is welcomed to a Scottish village as the new minister. Eager to be a proper shepherd to his flock, Gavin cuts a stern, stiff-necked figure. Then he meets Babbie (Katharine Hepburn), a gypsy girl who champions the poor. Soon Gavin is hopelessly in love with the headstrong, flirtatious lass who, unknown to him, is really a grand lady betrothed to an aristocrat she does not love. Based on a novel and play by James M. Barrie (Peter Pan), this endearing film showcases Hepburn’s irresistible femininity as she conquers the heart of the little minister. “Can a man like a woman against his will?” he asks. “Of course he can,” Babbie replies. “That’s the very nicest way to be liked.”

TRAIL STREET (1947, d. Ray Enright) - Billy Burns (George “Gabby” Hayes) is prone to tall tales. He can tell you about the sprawling ranch of Brandyhead Jones. Or about grasshoppers so big and tough they pick their teeth with barbed wire. But one thing Billy can never overstate is his friendship with Bat Masterson – and how he’s sure Bat will honor his request to come to Liberal, Kansas, and stop the festering range war between wheat farmers and cattlemen.

RETURN OF THE BAD MEN (1948, d. Ray Enright) - The Oklahoma Land Rush means free land – and a cadre of outlaws amassed to prey on the newly prosperous territory. Perhaps the vilest of these lurking bad men is the shoot-first Sundance Kid (Robert Ryan). Vance knows there’s no room in the wide-open spaces for cold-blooded killers like the Kid, and he’ll shoot holes in any contrary notion. He’ll bring peace and justice to the prairie.

CARSON CITY (1952, d. Andre De Toth) - Randolph Scott is a man with a mission in this classic tale, as he endeavors to build a railroad through the lawless land between Carson City and Virginia City, Nevada. It won’t be easy. It might be deadly. Citizens are riled over this new era of steel-and-steam progress. And the man goading the populace just happens to be a furtive thief who knows stagecoach lines are easy targets. Andre Detoth ("House of Wax") directs.

THE MAD MISS MANTON (1938, d. Leigh Jason) - Dizzy heiress Melsa Manton and her manicured band of Park Avenue pranksters think Manhattan is an amusement park built just for them. So when Melsa stumbles across a murder victim, the pranksters decide to play detective. The only trouble is that the murderer is playing too – for keeps.

JOY OF LIVING (1938, d. Tay Garnett) - Broadway star Maggie Garret sings for her supper. And for everybody else’s. She’s the meal ticket for relatives who sap her of money and time, rob her of the joy of living. But Maggie’s workaday world changes when she meets a carefree millionaire who thinks Maggie is a peach. And her family is the pits.

HAVING WONDERFUL TIME (1938, Alfred Santell) - Ginger Rogers also stars alongside Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in this screen adaptation of the Broadway play about young Romeos and Juliets who escape the grit and grind of Depression-era New York City for the canoeing and canoodling of Camp Kare-Free. The stars shine brightly at the resort: Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, Grady Sutton and Jack Carson among them. And Red Skelton makes his film debut, dunking donuts and pratfalling down stairs as the camp social director.

LUXURY LINER (1948, d. Richard Whorf) - Perky Jane Powell (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) plays the golden-voiced teen daughter of an ocean liner captain (George Brent) who stows away on dad’s ship in hopes of showcasing her singing skills to a voyaging opera star (played by real-life Wagnerian Lauritz Melchior). Many more musical talents set sail too: Xavier Cugat swings with Con Maracas, the Pied Pipers add silken harmonies and operatic soprano Marina Koshetz trills and spoofs the Cole Porter standard I’ve Got You Under My Skin. Bon voyage!

MEET THE PEOPLE (1944, d. Charles Reisner) - Julie Hampton (Lucille Ball) can tote a lunch pail and carry a tune. She’s a Broadway star who’s joined the Rosie the Riveters at Morgan Shipyards. Working with her is aspiring playwright “Swanee” Swanson, who insists Julie toil among the yard workers before she stars in the play he’s written about them.

THOUSANDS CHEER (1943, d. George Sidney) - The story concerns aerialist-turned-G.I. Gene Kelly (mopping up the dance floor with a mop for a partner) romancing colonel’s daughter Kathryn Grayson. But the real story is the most spectacular camp show in military history, featuring skits and songs with Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball, Lena Horne, Eleanor Powell, José Iturbi and just about everybody else in Hollywood. Start cheering!!

DR vixmom, we love you and you have to stop all these attention-getting tactics. You will hurt yourself.

I am so happy to see you online today.

As I told my brothers  - I had to do SOMETHING, Dad was grabbing all the attentionand sympathy with his darn leg!

Update on that - we have not heard any biopsy results - but my Dad of course doesn't want to inconvenience anyone by calling to see if they have come in, he is content to wait until his appointment this Friday to get his staples out

(Although I am annoyed we do not have a definitive answer, I am somewhat relieved that we have heard nothing - I had my biopsy late on a Friday afternoon and by Tuesday I was getting the Bad News - I suspect if the news were bad we would have heard immediately)

DR Vixmom, what a story, thank you for sharing.  I'm sorry you had to go through all of this.  I'm extremely impressed with the quick care you received from the doctors.

Rest well during then next couple of weeks while you recover.  What are you permitted to eat?  Are you back on the cans?

It seems that to get Fast Tracked it helps to collapse at the reception desk and have your spouse mention possible perforation of the stomach due to the feeding tube put in for recent chemo/radiation treatments.

Also, apparently my GI,  who is well known in the hospital was actually on the phone with one of the ER nurses or nurse assistants or whatever they are, as I was busy fainting in the corrider,  saying he had just sent over a patient for an immediate emergency CAT scan\

I am afraid I have been backon the cans as I was unable to eat again due the tubes hurting tehinside of my throat during the operation.  Also for some reason everything tastes terribly bitter - I have to make an effort to eat by mouth though this is getting ridiculous

One thing that does annoy me about the hospitals today is that you cannot tell who anyone is by how they dress.  When I was 10 and had my appendix out, Doctor's wore white coats, nurses had white dresses and caps, janitors dreeses in overalls...

Now everyone wears the same scrubs - you cannot tell a nurse from a  doctor from a Physicain assistant from a receptionist, from a nurse practioner rom teh cleaning lady they all wear the same scrubs.

I am sure they are all more comfortable but I would be much happier if they had their title emblazoned on their uniform so the average person would know to whom they are speaking

I agree, it is annoying when you can't tell who/what anyone at the hospital is.  DR Vixmom you really must stop leaving bits of you all over, time to keep what belongs to you.;)

DAW, do you have any colleges or community colleges near by?  I doubt they would have the same "no trespassing" rules as the public schools.

I had about six minutes left in the afternoon and started AS THE WORLD TURNS thinking I'd just skim through it to the previews, but there were the boys, so I had to stop it and will pick it up when I go back down later.

It gets more and more idiotic; the incestuous twins were so demented before their crime spree that "the boys" must be complete retards, and where the hell are all their other friends? Like the "huge" crowd that came to the Big Gay Rally? To what common low level of audience IQ do these writers aim? Or stoop?

I think the plots for the boys stopped making sense the last time Col. Mayer was on, and their plots have never really recovered.

I read that THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS is adding a gay male character to its show soon. I may switch to it once he's in place.

It seems like it would be a pretty boring story line with only one gay character on the show.  Unless he is going to start seducing the "straight" characters.

I did end up heading out the Tanger Outlet Mall earlier.  It was a total Meh excursion.  I knew I was in "trouble" when I looked at the store directory and didn't see a New Balance store listed.  And then I really I knew I was in for a truly underwhelming experience when I peeked into their Food Court, and saw that there were only three options: a Chinese place, Sbarro and Subway.

I did check out a few stores, but I just wasn't in a shopping mode.  When I stopped into the Banana Republic Factory Store, I ran into one of the members of the cast of The Producers. -He works there as a sales associate.  Well... Even with him offering to extend his discount to me, I still didn't find anything I wanted to buy.  And so I left the outlet mall.

-And that's when the skies darkened and the rain started pouring down.

A coincidence?

I just bought myself a new video camcorder and I was looking at it and reading the instructions this weekend.  I bought my first video cam fifteen years ago and the thing was about the same size as the old TV station cameras (and probably just as heavy).  I remember on my first vacation to Mexico that I almost passed out from heat exhaustion from carrying the damn thing around with me.

My new one fits in the palm of my hand.  How amazing is that?  And this one allows me to download the videos directly to my computer.

After leaving the outlet mall, I just decided to drive around a bit since the rain was already starting to stop after just a couple of minutes.  I drove here, I drove there.

I finally found where The Citadel is located, along with the neighboring Hampton Park. -And, no, I was not looking for some "Lords of Discipline". ;) I checked out the City Marina - where, apparently, there's a great dive-y place for breakfast, which I believe I'll be trying out later this week. I also serendipitously ended up on the far end of East Bay, and was able to take a nice drive along Charleston Harbor from the residential area into the already familiar (to me) business and restaurant district.

My favorite childhood TV shows were THE LONE RANGER, SUPERMAN, CHEYENNE & HIGHWAY PATROL, which was produced by my cousin, Fred Ziv.

We are currently watching season 1, disc 3 of CHEYENNE.  I'm really enjoying Clint Walker.  He is beautiful to listen to and watch.

DR MBarnum, what have you done to the Lassners?

;D He didn't do it to us, we have watched a number of the old shows.  C. Pogue is lucky to get all the episodes of Cheyenne. NetfFlix only has the first season.

Tonight's Cheyenne featured Cheyenne, Bronco Lane, and Sugarfoot all in one episode!

I miss the days when the storylines were well written... Character development on some of the shows is miserable at best

We are back from our errand to the Indianapolis airport.  Janice's flight was a little early and we met up as planned at baggage claim.  Her bathed and jammied granddaughters were thrilled to see her (and so was her husband, who's been "bachelor grandfather" all week).

I was so pleased to read DR Vixmom's posts and DR Jose's report from his roommate.

Welcome home, DR Vixmom!!!

DR Ginny do the grandchildren live with their grandparents?

Yes, DR Jane, as of March 8.  It's a long, sad story, but they are thriving now that they're in a more stable environment.  Whenever I think I have a lot on my plate, I think of those grandparents.

Tomorrow will be very warm again.  I should be happy it will be warm except the sun & heat on my arms really hurt today. :(

It has cooled off now & I'm feeling better.  If only I didn't have 2 loads left to dry.  Every  time I stick my arms in the dryer I can feel the heat on the.  I used some ice earlier & that helped ease the discomfort & reduce the swelling.

Whine over  :)

DR MattH, i watch the Young & The Restless. No gay characters yet. Although there are a lot of gay actors on the show, with Cybil Shepherd's daughter (who is gay in real life) just joining. Some people have been speculating that maybe her character could turn up gay. Although i doubt it.

LOST IN AUSTEN evidently has a very rabid fanbase and they are not happy about the changes made in this DVD version I reviewed a few weeks ago.  Oy.  Like somehow it's my fault.

I have the Region-2 DvD; how could they redo what was already set for the Region-1?

They replaced the P&P Theme that's Amanda's ringtone with a generic one, and they also removed the "Downtown" gag.

I sure missed the cell phone ring but the "Downtown" moment is priceless!

The Blu-Ray edition of the wonderful Colin Firth version, which is the real raison d'etre for LOST IN AUSTEN, is coming out very soon.

I think the BD is out, Larry--I reviewed it a good two months ago.

Just to clarify, does your R2 release actually have Amanda singing "Downtown"?  In the R1 version it just cuts right to Bingley's priceless reaction, which, to me anyway, worked just as well.

DR Matt H, thank you for the review.  Unfortunately, for me, Keith still wants to watch The Uninvited.  It could be worse, at least it isn't a remake of the Ray Milland film.

It's not a dreadful movie, just a thoroughly mediocre one.

Yes, the baby is doing well.  That was another thing about her injuries - the baby was always fine. Of course, if her condition had worsened, then the baby's health would have been in jeopardy, but, apparently, the baby was not hurt at all during the accident.  I also saw some pics of her car today too.  The side of the car that got swiped by the hit-and-run driver looks like it's about to fall off, while the other side was unscathed.

What a full evening of viewing I've had. I had hoped I'd have time for another NCIS episode from the DVD, but no such luck. I was too busy watching stuff on the DVR so I could clear it off. I got it down to 38% full before tonight's recordings started kicking in.

I began by watching/skimming AS THE WORLD TURNS. It was, as Larry explained earlier, such a stupid episode. These people have to be BRAIN DEAD before they realize something is off. Of course, we knew it was off the SECOND the Z-twins (lovers) popped onto the scene. Everyone admitted they were weird, but they continued to allow them to hang out with them. And now no one has noticed that Zach hasn't been seen in days?

I ought to drop this show and just read the recaps on-line. Sure would save me time and my poor DVR from the daily recording/erasing.

Sort of sounds like the role Angela Lansbury did  on Law and Order: SVU & Trial By Jury but her son was a rapist played by Alfred Molina. Ms Lansbury received her 18th Emmy Nod for this role
