Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Fridayish, and now it is time for you to post until the Friday cows come home.

One of our GUESTS was looking at an old 2004 thread entitled Quiz Kids.  I went back and read those notes and found this amazing quiz.  I repeat it here for your mental delectation, since we have many new folks since then.  Here's the thing - do it carefully - write down everything every step of the way (don't only do it in your head).  I think you'll like the quiz.

I feel it’s time we had a quiz here at haineshisway.com, don’t you, dear readers? So, here is a quiz. Pay very close attention to the questions asked, and answer them exactly and precisely, not necessarily in that order. It is best to attempt this quiz after flossing. All right, you quiz kids, to it.

Pick a number from one to ten. Write it down.

Multiply your chosen number by 9.

Multiply that total by 2.

Add all the numbers in that total together. (example: if your total is 84, you'd add the 8 and the 4 to get 12.)

Subtract that total by 5. You will now have your final total.

Assign a letter to your number that is your total from above. (example: if your total is 1, you'd assign it "a"; if your total is 5, you'd assign it "e", etc. In other words, 1=a, 2=b, 3=c, and so forth).

Now, think of a country that begins with your letter.

Now, using the second letter of your country, think of a mammal.

Wasn't that a fun quiz. Did you all come up with some interesting answers? And isn't it funny, did you have any idea that elephants were indigenous to Denmark?

If you did the quiz correctly you are now scratching your heads in amazement thinking, how did bk know that? If you did the quiz incorrectly, well, you are now scratching your head in amazement and thinking, what kind of quiz is that? Now, go out and amaze and stupefy your friends, you quiz kids.

I am thinking I had caffeineated Diet-Coke too late last night-- hence my being awake now.

TOD:  an Andre Previn Extravaganza==
Two for the Seesaw
Valley of the Dolls
Inside Daisy Clover (yes, I sprung for the newly re-issued 2 CD, and it is well worth it-- that has always been one of my favorite scores of his.)

I may listen to some Freddie Gardner and Matt Alber for a break from Previn's cellos, violas and French horns-- as ubiquitous as Mancini's flute trios but wonderful nonetheless (a three penny word)

I'll do the quiz later.

Good notes, and it was interesting to hear them again.  Tell Guy Haines to quit playing tennis or sitting around like so much fish and get back in thew studio.  I even have heard a song or two that Guy could sing.  Not to mention I  am sure that you and Guy have your own ideas of songs he could do.

Anthony will be returning today.

I also have a presentation at 11:30 for the Board of Directors so I'm sitting at my desk in a shirt and tie. Luckily, I don't have to wear a tie every day but these presentations are special so the school clothes come out.

I'm not listening to anything since I'm reviewing the presentation in my head as well as doing other work that must be done.

Good morning, all! I slept very badly last night: too much angst over the lack of an office manager to take care of office problems and the Institute's inertia in hiring one.

Today, the NYPL at Lincoln Center, and after that, God knows.

BK, re "Disneyland," you omitted the part about the manager of the studio's being a huge lady about 3 times my size and your accusation that she ate the power cable for lunch that day! My other memory of that day is the awful wait - weren't there electricians in at some point to slow things down? - and how frustrated everybody was.

DR singdaw, are you enjoying BITTER SWEET?

Reading bk talking last night and today about his recording of "Sherry!" title song makes me long to break out that album again soon. That is one of my favorite tracks on any of his CDs, and I agree that Jonathan Freeman and Christine Baranski are PERFECTLY cast in those two parts. That track is a wonder! Makes you ponder how a score with a song like that could have been a part of a flop show.

I have that studio cast album of SHERRY, too, and I've never even taken it out of the shrink wrap. That may end up in my car's CD player today.

TOnight I am going with best friend John to the national tour of LEGALLY BLONDE. His wife can't accompany him tonight, so I will go. Having seen the show on MTV (or was it A&E or VH-1) a couple of years ago, there likely won't be many surprises, but naturally it's better to see these shows live on stage. Should be a fun evening.

Since I'll be gone tonight and unable to finish up my work project on the Korda movies then, I must try to get both of the remaining movies in the set watched this afternoon. Since each is slightly over 80 minutes long, I should be able to do it and then get them written up and the review finished and posted before I head out tonight.

At least, that's my plan.

Interesting story about Guy Haines' recording debut. It's great how he appeared at just the right time. I wonder if the other singer is one that BK has ever used before or since.

My fave Guy Haines' song is the one on the Peter Pan album. It is very soothing.

My favorite Guy Haines song is "What Could You Lose?" which he does much better than a different singer (who will go nameless) on another bk-produced album.

I'm going to head down a little earlier than usual now to get cleaned up to go out on my usual Friday outings. I have some packages to mail at the post office (who knows what kind of line there will be), and then the sooner I get back, the sooner I can eat lunch and then get started on those Korda movies for work.

Last night I watched the 1934 pre-code film SEARCH FOR BEAUTY which starred Buster Crabbe, Ida Lupino, and Robert Armstrong.

This film is a good example of why the "code" came into being!!

Lots of flesh -- male and female...including a locker room scene in which several completely bare male behinds were in view....I had to watch the scene several times in order to make sure that what I was seeing was for real

And I must say that the 1930s Ida Lupino is quite the looker...I would not have recognized her. Who knew?

Actually I have no problem with her rendition of the song. I have other versions of the song, with people  who I don't enjoy as much as hers.

Geraldinte Turner and Christopher McDowall. they are nice but IMHO not as good as GH or JK

Just spent forty minutes on the phone with Apple Care dealing with some odd problems that happened out of the blue an hour ago.  For example, suddenly I couldn't launch iTunes, iPhoto, or Address Book - got an error message each time.  Couldn't launch system preferences or software update.  Mail was working fine.  I got a guy from India and told him not to waste my time and to get me to a product specialist in the US.  While I was on hold for that to happen, I restarted the computer - launched Word and the printer, but it took forever with that damned spinning wheel.  Got a product specialist and told him what was going on.  He had me shut off the computer and launch it in "safe" mode, which I did.  He then talked me through several steps and by the end of it we restarted in normal mode and voila, everything was working fine.

Another testimonial to Apple product reliability?

der Brucer - who has not turned off his PC-clone for 4 years and has had no problems.

My quiz results are Delaware and elephant. Yeah, so?

My dad had an Ogden Nash book. I only remember the last line of one poem: "I would not engage the wombat in any mortal form of combat."

Through a terrible twist in fate, Mark and I ended up at the House of Pies a couple nights ago. I ordered the peanut butter pie, even though I didn't think I would like it because there's no chocolate in it. I ordered it anyway just because Bruce likes it and it was quite delicious. But it would be even better with a layer of chocolate in there to create the ultimate Reeses effect. Mark is going to try Alavert just because Bruce likes it, but I'm sure it won't be as delicious as the peanut butter pie. Regardless, he's hoping it stops his periodic all-day sneezing fits. If he just ate a slice of peanut butter pie instead, his lips would swell up to the size of Nadya Suleman's, but I'll bet he'd stop sneezing!!

I'm grooming my first parti-poodle tomorrow. No, a parti-poodle is not a dog wearing pantaloons, pointy party hats, and eating ham chunks. A parti-poodle is a poodle that's part black and part white.

DR Ginny I have begun reading THE HEARTS OF HORSES. :)

DR Jane - hope you like it!  I now want to read Molly Gloss' other novels, but I'm totally engrossed in The Red Leather Diary at the moment.

So far I'm enjoying it.  I have the Diary on my list of books to read. I think I'll call & see if the used book store has a copy.

I was SO mad when I settled in to eat lunch. I was going to watch KROD MANDOON from last night, but for some reason, the DVR recorded a SOUTH PARK episode. Either I set it wrong, or Comedy Central ran the show in a different time period from that listed in the guide. (I recorded an early morning replay rather than the 10 p.m. show.)

Next I put in THE PRIVATE LIFE OF DON JUAN, the one film in the box I had never watched before. This was the final screen performance of Douglas Fairbanks, and even though he's clearaly middle aged with some girth around his middle, thinning hair, and age lines in his face, he still cut a dashing figure in a couple of scenes (one shirtless scene showed he still had a powerful upper body).

His mundane voice, of course, was the anthithesis of his dashing rogue persona, and it's kind of odd with everyone around him speaking with English accents, and he's got that flat American dialect (they're all portraying Spaniards). Still, as a comedy of manners, it was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed it.

And I finished the box set watching REMBRANDT next. Another fabulous performance by Charles Laughton, and Gertrude Lawrence got to chew some scenery, too, as the mistress/housekeeper who's tossed aside when Rembrandt falls for the maid played by Elsa Lanchester.

Beautiful cinematography which was done to mimic the painter's expressive use of light and shadows. It's the best movie in the set.

Yep, my rent for the two year lease went up $85. Blame it on the City Commission that every year goes through a song and dance about how much rents can rise on stabilized apartments. This past year (late 2008) because of the economic crisis/housing crisis the commission decided that rents could rise 4.5% for one year leases or 8.5% for two year leases BUT because of the hard times they gave the landlords/owners the option of either charging the percent increase OR for this one year only, raising the rent a flat $45 for one year leases or $85 for two year leases. The 8.5 percent on most stabilized two-year leases would come out to less than $85 (my rent with th 8.5% increase would have come out to about $20 less than the $85 going up about $61). Guess which option the landlord/owners have chosen?

For years a friend of our has had one of those normal brown spots common with getting older.  She tried various methods of removing it, including laser & excision.  It just kept growing, as they often do.

Yesterday she had a rather large sized melanoma removed from her face.  The only change in the brown spot was a slightly pink tinge around one edge of it.  Shocking is the dermatologist who attempted to cut it out 5 years ago never sent it for a biopsy.

This is scary because multiple doctors did not recognize it as melanoma & she was sent to the current dermatologist for a suspicious mole which turned out to be nothing.  The new dermatologist took one look at her face and knew.  I think the pink tinge was the clincher.

She will eventually need a skin graft.  First the doctors are waiting for the results from the lab to say they got it all, which they are 99% sure they did.

DR Jane - I hope your friend is OK.  My mom had that kind of surgery on her face a couple of months ago and we're going for her recheck next week.

DR Ginny I thought your mother "only" had skin cancer.  Are you saying it was melanoma?  I hope it wasn't as large as my friend's.  How is she doing & did they get it all?

My allergies are bothering me a bit today, but it was SOOO nice to have all the windows open and have the breeze flowing through.  It's supposed to be much cooler and rainy this weekend.

Someone could have just made up a social security number and it happens to be his.  I would be concerned about this and I don't understand why Social Security won't do anything about it.

Counterfeit SS cards are a big business out here. Employers are obligated to check for SS numbers; they are not obligated to be sure said numbers are legit.

I've had a lot of identity theft cases that are someone using someone's SS #. Sometimes they know it's real and sometimes it's just made up as a part of false papers so someone can get a job.

Don't they have to turn the info into the government?  If not they should!

Did you do the tips suggested on the social security website?  How many ways have you found this person using the s.s# or will it be awhile before you know?

This has been a very aggravating evening between the traffic and the buses having no sort of regular schedule. I went up to my storage space and waited 15 minutes for a No. 7 or No 11 bus to take me to 106th Street. Given that two buses run Amsterdam Avenue, it's ridiculous to be waiting long for either bus. After 15 minutes, a No 7 showed up followed by another No 7! I got to the storage space, gathered what I needed and waited for 30 minutes for a No 11 bus going downtown, According to the posted schedule, there should have been three arriving at Columbus and 107th Street between 7:40 and 8:10. A bus finally arrived, followed by another! Are the buses afraid to travel alone? Must they herd?

God, I'm starting to really hate the MTA because they're probably using their claims of having no money to cut the schedules back. If they want to make money, they should start charging the damned free-riding kids who take all the seats and force us paying old folks to stand. Fuckem.

I also dn't understand why, for a two year lease I should pay rent for two years at $9900 a year when for a one-year lease I'd only be paying next year $9300! Shouldn't the damned 2-year lease be the money saver?

It got very warm here today. I wore a long sleeved shirt to the theater tonight and I was worried aI was going to get too warm during the show, especially if there was a full house. Fortunately, they had turned on the air conditioning.

LEGALLY BLONDE was very enjoyable. The cast worked hard (lots of great looking guys), the show is fun, and the second act has a couple of strong production numbers that really give a lift to the second act.

They had a big crowd tonight. I had heard through the grapevine a month ago that the show wasn't selling well, but quite a few big stories in the newspaper over the last two weeks must have convinced folks to give it a try. It also got a very positive opening night review in the local newspaper.

Found out I'm going to be reviewing the X-MEN trilogy set on Blu-ray (it came out already on Tuesday), so I'll be spending the rest of the weekend watching the first two movies again on DVD and watching the bonus features so I can get a head start on the set. I can have the films themselves reviewed and the bonus features watched and written up (ported from the special edition DVDs to the Blu-rays) before I actually get the set. Then I can add the video and audio write-ups and tweak the rest of the review depending on what else might be there.

In other news...

The artistic director took me to Langdon's (http://www.langdonsrestaurant.com/) for my "Thank You Lunch".  And it was quite a nice "Thank You", well, lunch anyway.  The place is basically across the street from the theatre in one of the various strip malls that are all along Route 17.  So, of course, because it's in a strip mall, you can't really tell that it's a very nice restaurant - basically, one of the more upscale places that I've been to in town.  I had the Poached Pear and Arugula Salad, and their Diver Scallop with Asparagus Risotto entree.   Very well-prepared, cooked and tasty.  -Sort of made me wish I had tried out the place earlier during my stay here. ;)

But the main part of the lunch was the "Thank You".  -Which was mutual.  I really have had a wonderful time down here, and I am going to miss it.
