I remember going to see a magic show, when I was a sprig of a twig.  The magician, whose name I forget, had a wonderful Chinese Ailuropodia, which he made appear and disappear at will, first in an elaborate cabinet, then in a trunk, then from behind a curtain that seemed to hover in mid-air, supported by nothing at all.  But, towards the end of the act, when the magician reached into a very large laquered vase, there was obviously something wrong.  The magician stalled for time, stretched the moment as long as he dared with patter, but it eventually became obvious to all of us in the audience - his assistant backstage had gotten his final PANDA CUE LATE.

Workies!

Good morning, all! I have to spend some time this morning on two important emails, one of them to the head of the Institute, about the BABES IN TOYLAND status. After that, a trip down to Toyland to accomplish some work and meet a friend for lunch. Then, back here for some work on THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.

Oh yes... Coldeman. The "d" is silent in America. It's Cole D'Isle au Man, or Cole of the Isle of Man, in France, where Armand's chateau is, Cold-e-man in Greece where Armand's work is, and finally the vulgar Coleman in Florida where Armand's home is, so actually, we don't know where we are until we hear our last name pronounced! I will do no work today until the Fox Blu-rays arrive. Right now, I'm planning to do them in the following order:

BRIDE WARS
THE WRESTLER
X-MEN TRILOGY
NOTORIOUS

There is a method to my madness. I plan to work on the first two in the afternoons and watch an X-MEN film in the early evening. By the third day, that will leave the last X-MEN film to watch. Of the four items, NOTORIOUS is the one I'm least looking forward to viewing.

DR Matt H, would that I could! I was so engrossed in a score I was reading that Imissed thew 28th Street stop, so I ended up at 23rd Street and walked up. I stopped at Whole Foods and bought a 12-pack of bottled water for the office refrigerator, and here I am.

I'm going through various and sundry orchestra scores at the office, and around 1 a director friend will show up for lunch. I wonder if he's in the mood for Chinese food? The restaurant on 28th and Seventh has the most glorious ginger shrimp. On my way back uptown, I will stop at a post office and mail three packages of CDs to friends in Manhattan (HENRY SWEET HENRY), Los Angeles (a John McGlinn recording) and San Francisco (the 1986 premiere of my Cole porter restoration JUBILEE, which the 42nd Street Moon is sort of doing in their next season).

Interesting stats: For the House Of Flowers eBlast, of the close to 1800 people on the Kritzerland list exactly 788 have bothered to actually open the e-mail.  I find that so weird - the people on the list have either asked to be there or have purchased other soundtracks or B'way-related CDs from us, and the header clearly states that the e-mail has info about a new CD release, so it's a little peculiar.  We do get the usual "out of office" or "on vacation" replies, but those aren't very many.

Other than that, I'm basically playing it by ear.  I'll be staying with my friend, David, and he's mentioned a few places he'd like to show me.  It also looks like there will be a mini-Theatre-VCU reunion on Saturday or Sunday.  :)

Have a great trip, DR Jose, and scope out some things Richard and I can put on our "to-do" list for when we're in Chicago in July for ALA!  Your train doesn't go through Fort Wayne, Indiana, does it?  I should be there by 7pm or so!

This just in - confirmed case of Swine Flu in the elementary school in our town.

There was a news report just this morning that a school in the Seattle area is closing until next week because of 6 probable cases of swine flu (http://www.komonews.com/news/local/44055787.html).

That is some of the most reprehensible reportage I've ever read.   What else is new?

Thanks, DR Ginny.  Alas, I don't think the Lake Shore Limited goes through Ft. Wayne, IN, however...

"The Lake Shore Limited travels daily between Chicago and New York City, along some of the country's prettiest shorelines.

You'll travel along the south shore of Lake Michigan, the Mohawk River, and the Erie Canal, following a famous Native American Highway. In New York State, you'll pass through the Finger Lakes region to Albany, capital of the Empire State."

-Of course, most of the trip takes place during the overnight hours. When it's dark, so... ;) But, still, it should be pretty.

My husband will be home from Long Island some time this afternoon. I went to Trader Joe's at lunch to buy some groceries.

I don't know yet what we will have for dinner.

It's supposed to rain tomorrow so I will do the laundry tonight. Isn't that exciting.

Additionally, if someone reads an email on their Blackberry, iPhone, etc., depending how they have their mailboxes set-up, the email may have been read, but not read through their main email client.  I know with my GMail account, if I read something on my computer, it will still show up as "new" on my iPhone. And vice versa.

As far as no-shows go, I cannot tell you how many times people who had set up appointments for job interviews (a governement job, a couple of law offices, a behaviral health company, a retail store) wopuld not show up.  I thought I was dealing with adults.  If someone bothers to call, ask about a job and set  up an appointment to come in for the next day, why wouldn't they show up?  It used to be joke no matter which type of job or which company I was working for that I would schedule 10 people, and I'd be lucky if 1 or 2 would actually show up.   I cannot imagine not showing up for a scheduled appointment.

DR MattH, i don't watch HARPER's ISLAND. But isn't that the show that CBS swore they would show in its entirety. No matter what. There was a big article in the paper. And it said it would go till july something.

Interestingly, the Canadian station that is showing it has it scheduled for tonight. So i think they are going to continue on schedule. IF they do this then the next episodes will be out there, which is sort of weird.

No Fox BDs early in the afternoon, so I began watching stuff on the DVR.

I began with last night's CSI: NY. The best show of the season by a mile. Ed Asner was the guest star of a Holocaust story, and it was mesmerizing from first frame to last. Terrific performance from him and from Gary Sinese. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Asner doesn't garner an Emmy nomination for this, and this should be Sinese's Emmy submission episode as well.

Some of these may have gone into SPAM filters.  I recently discovered that for some odd reason some of the email my mother in law sent me was going  into SPAM

We can't figure the ryhme or reason to it, it doesn't seem to matter whether they had attachments or not and she always sends from the same email address from the same computer

Other than that, I'm basically playing it by ear.  I'll be staying with my friend, David, and he's mentioned a few places he'd like to show me.  It also looks like there will be a mini-Theatre-VCU reunion on Saturday or Sunday.  :)

The gentleman sitting next to me lives in Mexico. He's been stateside visiting his son in Washington, DC for a few weeks. He wanted to see NYC, so he took the train up to Penn Station to see the Big Apple for a few days.

His return trip is as follows: NYC to Chicago; brief layover in Chicago; Chicago to Houston; and then a series of busses from Houston to Mexico City. Whew! -And is a little worried that he might get stranded in Texas if the border situation happens to change due to the swine flu situation.

-And I thought I had a long trip.

I'm done with all my errands and whatnot, and have just listened to the composer tapes for an upcoming Kritzerland soundtrack - I had high hopes for what might be on them, but they were dashed the minute I heard the first track - I don't know why the composer made these or what they were for, but there's an audible and horrible hum throughout all of reel one, along with what my transfer guy calls "bias" noise - crackly, disturbing noise throughout.  I think there are two tracks that can probably be saved, but I haven't figured out if those were included on the original LP release - I'll figure that out and include as bonus tracks if they weren't on the LP.  Some of it sounds completely unmixed and there are severe level shifts - it's just weird.  So, we'll use our own sources (from MGM and others) and we'll be just fine and we'll have a great-sounding CD - I was just hoping there was some extra music (there may or may not be) and that the sound would be so great that we could just use these tapes.  Thankfully, there was no charge from the composer's estate, so other than the transfer cost, it didn't set me back any real dough.

I'm sure some people have received this in an e-mail (which is how I found out about it), but if you haven't, this is a link for the "Most Amazing Rendition of Stand By Me You Have Ever Heard (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/04/30/Stand-By-Me-Around-the-World.aspx)."  It's really cool...and very well done!

Quote
From the award-winning documentary, "Playing For Change: Peace Through Music," comes the first of many "songs around the world" being released independently. This amazing version of “Stand by Me” brought a smile to my face, and I hope it will do the same for you.

Watch it from beginning to end—you won't regret it. This cover of Stand By Me was recorded by completely unknown artists in a street virtual studio all around the world!

It all started with a base track—vocals and guitar—recorded on the streets of Santa Monica, California, by a street musician named Roger Ridley. The base track was then taken to New Orleans, Louisiana, where Grandpa Elliott—a blind singer from the French Quarter—added vocals and harmonica while listening to Ridley's base track on headphones. In the same city, Washboard Chaz's added metal percussions.

From there, it just gets better and better: The producers took the resulting mix all through Europe, Africa, and South America, adding new tracks with multiple instruments and vocals, which were assembled into this final final version -- all done with a simple laptop and some microphones. Amazing!

Call me a troglodyte (you wouldn't be the first), but I had no idea until today that I could convert MIDIs to burnable CD files with ITunes.  That is saving me a ton of time.

Constant Contact allows you to see exactly what's going on - what addresses aren't good, who opens their mail, who's mail is spam-blocked - it's a great program.

And doesn't Constant Contact also allow you to input snail mail information for the people on your list... Which could then be easily exported to a spreadsheet program... Which could then be used to print out mailing labels...

Just had a very disturbing call from the Chair of the Theater Academy at LACC.  In essence, he's been ousted by three other members of the faculty - since this was to be his sixth term as Chair, he needed seventy-five percent of the vote from the faculty IF someone was running against him - the head tech guy, the set designer who runs the tech program, has, I'm sure, had this in his head for some time, and he did this power play and got the woman who runs the costume department and one of the acting teachers to vote for him and effectively that was the end of that.  Needless to say, the MAJORITY of the faculty wanted the current Chair to stay Chair, and they have lodged formal complaints with the Dean and the teacher's union.  How this will all shake out is anyone's guess, but I won't be planning any more LACCTAA events until I know.  This set guy, a real creepball of negative energy, has never been supportive of anything I've tried to do for the Academy - he's never attended ONE of our LACCTAA events - I doubt he even knows what they were or how helpful they were to the, you know, STUDENTS.  Plus, I'm sorry, but a tech guy running a theater academy?  Someone who has no idea what an actor does or how that stuff works?  I hasten to add that the majority of the students in the Academy (like 99%) are ACTORS, not set-builders and costumers.  My response was that it's the beginning of the end for the Academy because this guy will take it right into the toilet very fast - and it was just starting to get OUT of the toilet, thanks to the current Chair, and somewhat thanks to me and LACCTAA.

In the Dining Car, I ended up sitting at a table with a filmmaker from New York. It turned out that he was one of the guys who filmed the closing film montages for the original Broadway production of RENT, as well as for all the Equity tours. He also worked on both Hillary Clinton's and Barack Obama's presidential campaign. In fact, he was one of the lead camera guys and editors for now-President Obama's 30-minute infomercial. Very cool!

*Alas, he's heading up to Syracuse too meet his girlfriend.  ::) ;)

Well, I think I'm going to head back to my seat - I've been hanging out in the café car - and give my eyes a rest. It's only 10:30, but I'm already a bit sleepy. -Must be the "lulling" of the train. I may or may not check back in tonight, which has more to do with whether or not the train is in a good Edge or 3G service area than anything else. So, just in case I don't get to it later...

Goodnight.

Well, I'm leaving also.  Tonight is the Dining Out For Life (http://www.diningoutforlife.com/) night:

Quote
Dining Out For Life® is an annual fundraising event involving the generous participation of volunteers, corporate sponsors and restaurants. In exchange for their financial support, restaurants are listed in a city wide marketing campaign in an effort to increase customer traffic.

In 1991 Dining Out For Life® was created by an ActionAIDS volunteer in Philadelphia. Dining Out is now produced in over 55 cities throughout the United States and Canada. An average five to six cities are added each year.

More than 3,500 restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds from this one special night of dining to the licensed agency in their city. Nearly $4 million dollars a year is raised to support the missions of agencies throughout North America. With the exception of the annual licensing fee of $600, all money raised in these cities stays there.

So, I'm off to dine and help raise money! ;D

You're right: life is tenuous, and sometimes we have that cruelly reminded to us. A writer for the local newspaper I've been reading for a long, long time died on Tuesday. He was 50.

Kind of sobering.

30 ROCK has two of the original cast of COMPANY tonight, John Cunningham and Elaine Stritch.

I was going to mention this later, but I might as well mention it now. John Cunningham had replaced Bert Convy in CABARET when I saw it in NYC in 1968, and when I saw him in that COMPANY album documentary, I was reminded how gorgeous he was as a young man. Now, to have him as Stritch's "boy toy" on 30 ROCK tonight, it was eerie.

I've had a busy, busy night. I began by watching THE WRESTLER, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked MILK and DOUBT both better (the only other non-animated award contenders I've yet seen from 2008), but it's still a very well made film, one that held my attention throughout. I was glad it wasn't any longer than 109 minutes. That was the perfect length for the story it had to tell.

There were only three bonus features on the disc, and I watched all of them. One was a wrestlers' round table with a bunch of pro wrestlers I used to watch back in the 80s wheen they all had the bodies of gods: Lex Lugar, Brutus Beefcake, Dallas Page, Roddy Piper, Greg Valentine, and the moderator asked them interesting and intelligent questions.

Much more enjoyable feature than I thought it was going to be.

So, today before work, I went to the county courthouse to pay my property taxes for the whole year (thank you income tax refund!).  For people who didn't have their paperwork, they had a table in the hall where they would print your statement and you could just drop off the payment in a box or you could go into the office and have the payment applied right then.  I chose to just drop off my payment in the box and leave to go to work.  Then, I went to work and all was right with the world...or so I thought!

;)

I got a call from my mom saying that she just paid the first half of my parents' taxes and did the same thing (got the statement in the hall and just dropped off the payment).  However...she thought that they accidentally printed MY statement (both my dad and I are named George) and that she my paid half of my taxes AGAIN!  She called and the person she spoke to said that no, they didn't make a mistake (of course ::)), but my mom eventually explained and finally they said that there wouldn't be a problem.  But my mom will still have to go back to the courthouse on Monday.  What a hassle...and it's THEIR fault.
