Title: ANGST

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had angst, and now it is time for you to post until the angst-ridden cows come home.

And the word of the day is: ALGEDONIC!

There was no angst.

I love a nice angst-filled pirogie.  It's the third most popular filling after potato and cheese.

Recalls the Passover cry of "Please pass the neurosis and a little whine."

Actual line from the show was:

But don't try a cel-ray tonic

Just thought I should share that

"So Much Butter" from CHEEKILY BLONDE:  The Paula Dean Fable  (or should it be LETHALLY BLONDE?) just keeps getting longer and longer.

All of the food they’ve cooked
Hoping you’d get hooked
On their healthy cuisine
No not a single pat
Of congealing fat
In their healthy cuisine

And they have turned their kitchens inside out trying for a big hit show
Watching the turning tide is making me go whoa!
Oh!

You viewers like a fatter hide
I’ll take you for a triglycer-ride
So what can I bake
I’ll use nothing that’s fake
And my ratings will grow

I need a trademark good as gold
Your fellas won’t mind much more to hold
I’ll use so much butter on my show

Honey they’ve been obsessed
You’ve been watercressed
And their viewership fell
I’m bettin’ a pound or two
Plus a poofy do
Can come off pretty well

Honey, when Ellie Krieger baked a cake on her show last Tuesday night
They insisted she use only Fleischman’s Light
Get this right

We’re gonna use butter by the stick
No phony fat for this here chick
Being real can be hot
Are you ready or what
Time to grow with the flow

I’m gonna buy butter by the tub
These days people love a funny zhlub
And now there’ll be so much butter
Your heart will flutter
It’s OH-OH-OH-OH-OH-Oh-brutter!
I’ll have so much butter on my show!

Blue cheese salad, hold the greens
We’ll show them what eatin’ means
Please don’t hold the mayo, hon
And no, not the low-fat one
Burger on a donut’s great
All the fixin’s, s’il vous plate

Diet always starts with die
So I’ll go on lovin’ my

Butter by the stick
Will be my cool iconic shtick
Hey come on top that chard
With a helping of lard
Heap it on like a pro

Oh-oh

And when our show’s a big fat hit
Those undernourished shows will spit
We’ll have so much butter -

No skimming the top off chicken stock
We’ll put lots of Crisco in our wok
Hey no EVOO
Though our tushies will grow
Crisco gives you a glow

Go-go!

I’ll slather cream on black and whites
And I’ll look cherubic in my tights

And yes, we’ll have so much butter
Your valves will shutter
The AMA’s gonna spit and sputter

I’ll have so much butter
I’ll have so much butter
I’ll have so much butter
On my show!

Thank you, MR BK - I remember you talking about the staging and the time constraints at the time of the show - it's the song I don't like.  I can't get that horrible movie staging out of my mind.  It is Hermes Pan at his absolute "indicating" worst.  Oh well.  It's only one person's opinion.  Too bad we don't have 3DDIFFUSION around to comment as well.

Good morning, all! It turns out that the copyist has not sent me the complete score to the Suite from "The Cardinal," so I've proofed what I can for now. Today, I will work on Mr Moross' Gentlemen, Be Seated, his interesting musical theatre piece based on the American Civil War, which was premiered in 1960(?) by the NY City Opera. I like the score very much and I'm very happy to be doing the vocal score for the show. I googled it, looking for the NY Times review, and I found two letters to the Times by a Robert Stern from 2000 and 2009, saying it was one of the best things he'd ever heard during the great days of City Opera.

I need to do a bit of furniture arranging as well as run a few errands. Tomorrow, I have to prepare for Tuesday morning's trip to DC.

I'm off to walk Sugar while it's cool, check out the the new daily accumulation of junk at my Bumpus neighbors, get ready for church and then, unfortunately attend a funeral for a 21 year old who saw no way out but to blow his brains out a week ago.

At least yesterday was fun spending time with with great Friends and getting ALL the Free Comic Books on Free Comic Book Day.  They got them all-- important to them.  I got a couple of Archies and my beloved chocolate soda at lunch.

DR MATTH thanks for reminding me of the murder sequence in TORN CURTAIN....

As I've said so many times here, I think TORN CURTAIN got a bum rap. I think it's a much better movie than it's ever been given credit for being, and I tend to watch it a couple of times a year.

We have a good many clouds out right now, but I don't think it will rain. As as the day progresses, it's going back into the 80s. Ugh! I'll be inside today for sure.

I was so tired last night that I couldn't face writing up the rest of my X-Men piece on the bonus features for the third movie. I knew it would take a half hour or more to get it all written, so I got up earlier than I wanted to this morning to finish the write-up and get it posted. Glad to have that one behind me, just because it was SO loaded with stuff to talk about.

As I said last night, I'm REALLY looking forward to my day off today. I may even forgo the diet for a day and make a pan of brownies. I haven't had anything really decadent and sweet in quite a while, and I'm kind of hungry for it. We'll see.

I know I have at least three shows and a movie on the DVR: FLASHPOINT (which I'll watch while I eat lunch), SMALLVILLE, and THE OFFICE. GREY GARDENS is the film on there. I'd like to get those watched at some point today.

I want to watch the next Joan Crawford Archive movie I have - DANCE FOOLS DANCE. It was a blind buy. I read about it and decided I want to have it for my Joan collection.

I will watch at least one Blu-ray today for fun. Haven't decided yet what that will be. I've got a stack of them here to pick from. Maybe THE TRANSPORTER, maybe THE ROAD WARRIOR. Maybe one of the PLANET OF THE APES movies.

I like it but the only thing that works against it for me is the obvious use of the Universal Studio backlot and the scene where Paul tells Julie the truth. It goes from outdoors to a studio recreation of the outdoor set.

I know that Hitchcock liked it this way because he can have better control over the shooting rather that relying on the actual location and weather

Interestingly, both scenes were added late in the process, hence the artificial set - both were added to explain things that Hitch or the studio thought needed explaining.

*I shall post some details - and pictures(!) - later, but I have to say that this whole trip to Chicago has turned into quite an unexpected - and, in a sense - needed "happiness" for lack of a better word.  I basically planned this trip on a whim, and over the past 36 hours, I've experienced and "felt" more than I ever expected to experience and feel.  Have I done everything on my "list" (which was more of a mental checklist)? No. Have I been able to meet up with everyone I was hoping to see again? No.  Have I been to all my favorite Chicago eateries? No, not by a long shot.  But in no way do I feel cheated or any sense of "I wish I had more time here".  It really has been a great visit.  And I get one more full day here in Chicago before I board the train back to NYC tomorrow night. Still plenty of time, just the right amount of time.

DR MATTH thanks for reminding me of the murder sequence in TORN CURTAIN....

As I've said so many times here, I think TORN CURTAIN got a bum rap. I think it's a much better movie than it's ever been given credit for being, and I tend to watch it a couple of times a year.

Well, you'd have to dislike every one of his movies for that reason. He did that kind of thing in nearly all of them.

Then I watched DANCE FOOLS DANCE, the next in my stack of Warner Archive productions. Another 1931 movie, this was the first time Joan Crawford and Clark Gable appeared in the same film together. Gable was sixth billed as a racketeer who gets shot by Crawford's brother. Not as good as POSSESSED which I watched last week but still enjoyable. Joan did a variation of her dance from the HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929 in this movie. The same kind of clumsy tap dance that involves more flailing arms than it does snappy tap steps.

So, today is my ex-boyfriend's birthday and last night before going to bed, I sent him a happy birthday e-mail because we're still friends.  Anyway, he called me this morning (too darned early, though) to wish me a happy birthday (in two days), but he didn't see my e-mailed birthday card because he's in San Fransisco on vacation.  He's going to call me when he gets back home (Seattle) and we'll talk about getting together. :) We haven't actually seen each other in a few years, but we e-mail every once in a while.  And that was my wake-up call...literally.

After that, I watched the last three episodes of "Reaper," and now I need to take a shower and get ready for rehearsal. :D

I am looking forward to tonight's TAR. But crazily enough i'm looking forward to CELEBRITY APPRENTICE just as much.

I was at lunch yesterday with a bunch of kids (aged 8, 9, 12, 13). And they all watch AMAZING RACE (who knew?). Anyhow all 4 of them had the same favorite team (brother/sister). i thought that was weird.  But when i told my mom she was wondering if it was because they are all filipino and the brother/sister are asian (she was thinking maybe they related to chinese as being close to them??).

Last night i went to an interesting birthday party. My family was invited to all filipino party for my brother-in-law's mother. I cannot believe how many filipino people she (his mother) knows. There were like 55 there and that is not even half her friends!  The guy who runs the filipino paper was there taking lots of pics. For some strange reason i thought it would be fun to be in the paper. But i don't think he took any pics of me. But he did take a lot of my niece and my sister's niece and nephew. So i'll have to find some way to see if they are in the paper!

It seems I owe our esteemed bk an apology:

not four hours after I took him to task for complaining about the media exagerating the flu situtation than Geraldo Rivera took to Fox News and brayed on and on about the "pandemic" that was raging across our land! And ever since, on all channels, there has been a near unrelenting drumbeat of exageration.

Of course there are now those who maintain that the situation is, in fact, much worse, and that the federal Government is hiding the truth.

Der B - Depends on your point of view.  It's yet another draft of the parody from Lethally Blonde:  The Paula Dean Fable

(yet another draft parody of "So Much Better", since it's such a slow news day anyway)

The healthy food they’d cooked
Hoping you’d get hooked
On their boring cuisine
But now here’s a party gal
Who’s a foodie’s pal
And it’s me, Paula Dean

Food nuts have turned their kitchens inside out looking for their next hit show
But now this zaftig gal stood pat and made some dough!
Whoa!

Since viewers like a fatter hide
Take ‘em for a triglycer-ride
‘Cause now when I bake
I use nothing that’s fake
And my ratings just grow

I’ve got a trademark made of gold
Fellas won’t mind much more to hold
I use so much butter
On my show

Honey they’d been obsessed
You’d been watercressed
‘Til you found ‘em all bland
Now they see a pound or two
Plus a poofy do
Can come off kinda grand

Hon, when Ellie Krieger baked a cake on her show last Tuesday night
They just laughed when she used only Fleischman’s Light
Get this right

Gonna use butter by the stick
No phony fat for this here chick
Be real to be hot
So ready or not
Time to grow with the flow

When I buy butter by the tub
These days people love a funny zhlub
And now there is so much butter
Your heart will flutter
It’s OH-OH-OH-OH-OH-Oh-brutter!
I’ve got so much butter on my show!

(She’s got so much butter on her show!
She’s got so much butter on her show!)

Blue cheese salad, hold the greens
I’ll show them what eatin’ means
Please don’t hold the mayo, hon
And no, not the low-fat one
Burger on a donut’s great
All the fixin’s, s’il vous plate

Diet always starts with die
So I’ll go on lovin’ my

Butter by the stick
That is my cool iconic shtick
Come on, top that chard
With a helping of lard
Heap it on like a pro
Oh-oh

And now my show’s a big fat hit
Those undernourished shmoes just spit
We’ve got so much butter -

No skimming the top off chicken stock
We put lots of Crisco in our wok
No E.V.O.O.
Though our tushies will grow
Crisco gives you a glow
Go! Go!

I slather cream on black and whites
I look cherubic in my tights

And yes, I’ve got so much butter
Your valves will shutter
The A.M.A.’s gonna spit and sputter

I’ve got so much butter
I’ve got so much butter
I’ve got so much butter
On my show!

When I was 16 I was working at the local Piggly Wiggly as a courtesy clerk.  One day I came to work and found they had hired a new checker.  He was one of the most handsome men I had ever met.  He was 6'6" and looked just like Robert Goulet in his prime.  He was witty, charming, and totally delightful.  He was ten years older than me, and another of the courtesy clerks and I immediately dubbed him our Uncle Don.  The other clerk left a few months later, but Don remained my Uncle Don forever.

He taught me so many things during the years.  Probably the most important thing I learned from him was how to be a man and be gay individual without ever compromising one to be the other.  He knew I was gay long before I knew it or admitted it to myself.  He could have easily taken advantage of his older man status, but he never went there.  He was like an uncle, a father confessor, a personal adviser, and a close and very dear friend.  I loved him with all my heart.

This morning I learned that Uncle Don died ten days ago and was buried after private services.  From the care center that is thanked in his obituary, I assume that he was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.

This has been a tough year.

DR Matt H., whenever I don't know what to watch, I pull out THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

What a coincidence!  If every other movie in the world disappeared, I still wouldn't pull out THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

I'll drink to that!
I always figured if DR Elmore was on the news it would be for a much more exciting story.  8)

I always expect to end up on the front page for killing you whenever you come to visit.

Not exactly the balcony scene from ROMEO AND JULIET!

It's Romeo and the Houseguest from Bollywood Hell!

Since it is your balcony, wouldn't that make you Juliet?

It makes me a fool to put up with him!

I would, but I'm not sure I can carry off the outfit that goes with it.

Betty Botter bought some butter,
"But," she said, "the butter's bitter;
If I put it in my batter,
It will make my batter bitter;
But a bit of better butter,
That would make my batter better."

So she bought a bit of butter,
Better than her bitter butter,
And she put it in her batter,
And the batter was not bitter;
So 'twas better Betty Botter
Bought a bit of better butter.

I went to nbc.com and watched the clip. They were definitely in my bodega; there's a shot outside the market at the corner of 82nd and Amsterdam and several interior shots inside.. I did not see myself, though.

Just a clip?

The whole program was actually devoted to the lottery scams. Most of it in California but some footage looked like NYC.

The maybe Elmoore spotting happened right at the end of the program as they were wrapping up the show.

SO MAYBE JUST IN CASE OUR WEST COAST FRIENDS

Can watch the show or tape and see if it is our DR Elmoore caught by the news cameras.

I had a nice evening of viewing. I began with THE TRANSPORTER. I've never seen this movie in its entirety. COmpletely over-the-top action and stunt fighting, but at 90 minutes, it's just the right length. I could have done without the superfluous sex scene in the middle of the film.

The Blu-ray was not a reference quality transfer, but the sound design (DTS-HD MA 5.1) was terrific.

And, of course, Jason Statham is always a pleasure to look at with his shirt off.

For some reason, the DVD player didn't resume at the place where I stopped in THE SOUND OF MUSIC, so I just took it out and put in IT'S A GREAT FEELING. I simply LOVE the bright, bouncy score for this movie. The plot's ridiculous, of course, but the songs are all just great tunes. Can't believe none of them ever became a standard (even though the title song was nominated for an Oscar; it's NOT the best song in the score).

Funny you should mention what you wantch when you don't know what to watch, DR td, because I have two discs that I pull out for that purpose: LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME and BRIGADOON. Tonight I pulled out LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME and watched about a half hour of it. Always love this movie.

Before my evening of prime time started, I watched Thursday night's SMALLVILLE. I liked this episode SO much more than last week's silly adventure with Lois as a superhero. Lois wasn't even there this week, and she wasn't missed.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had some interesting stories. I didn't care for Tom and Lynette's plot at all. Gabby's was interesting though trying to reason with a child of six and giving in to her as they did to try to prove a point seemed a bit much to me.

Nice to see Jackson again with a surprising proposal. The highlight, of course, was Richard Burgi's return to the show. Looks like it will be an extended arc, and that's always good news.

And I enjoyed BROTHERS & SISTERS tonight a lot. The scene between Justin and Rebecca at the end brought tears to my eyes, and it's funny because this time last year, I was violently against them being a couple. Now they seem made for each other.

Some day off.  I don't believe I've stopped since returning from the long jog this morning.  I just had to go to my designer's house again to bring him something I forgot yesterday.  I've addressed all packages save for about fifteen, so that's a big load off.  But I'm trying to get the new release ready for announcement a week from tomorrow (sooner here, of course).

Yup.  At rehearsal tonight (and for the next couple of weeks...and last week, when I wasn't needed), we did "table work" (which I'd never heard of before).  We just sat around a table and read through the scenes and then Chris the director had us read through them again, but paraphrase all the lines.  The idea was to make sure that we really understand what we're saying...what's the context...the "motivation" behind all the Shakespearean language.  It was interesting.  Chris also asked each of us some questions to think about in each of these scenes.
