Title: LITTLE WIENERS WRAPPED IN DOUGH
Post by: bk on May 08, 2009, 09:46:10 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wiener-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating their own little wieners wrapped in dough.

As I was trying to say before I found out yesterday's topic was locked...

We boarded the 6:40am flight to Legazpi Airport in Bicol, Philippines - my father's hometown. Ever since we landed it's been one amazing thing after another. Just so many things to process and take in. All good, and some humbling. We stopped by the town cemetery so that my father could pay his respects to his mother and other relatives who have passed... Like I said, a lot.

Well for what was to be a really wonderful weekend for me, 8:00AM breakfast with the fireman, 10:00AM walking tour of NoHo, and 2:00PM hanging out with my friends from the 60's for the rest of day, and then on Sunday 10:00AM Rotary Club arts and crafts faire at the park, is suddenly vanished from reality.

My stubborn 83 year old father who has been asking me to help him with going back to his primary care physician of the last 20 years, decided to drive himself to the hospital with a doctor he said was the devil and needed to be turned into the medical board.

I'm currently having lunch in the Macagang Diner which is part of the Macagang Resort - which is where we'll be staying the next two days. The resort was founded by a Filipino engineer who mad his fortune developing a special antenna that the US Navy and other military outfits use. The Macagang Business Center - which is actually a school - was the first high school in the Philippines to have a computer center. In any case...

I believe my parents are taking a siesta right now, and I may just do the same thing when I get back to the room.

So since I got off work, I had to first hunt him down as to where he was, then throw a fit at the hospital because again they had him sign all paperwork without the consent of a family member, and he again lied about what was going on and made me look like a vulture.  Right now I am so frustrated I refuse to go back to the hospital.

bk - Jose would know the Palace Theatre better than i do, but I think there may be an AA and/or  BB in front of row A, which would make row D the fifth or sixth row.

Which may actually be better for a dance show, come to think of it.

And the worst part is that when I went to his apartment to lock up etc., I called 2 of his friends that have know him for more than 40 years each. And they both knew exactly what I was saying, that they were also getting the same story. Tried to help but gave up in frustration.

The "magic" seemed to just be waiting until after 8 pm for the next day's matinee.  I'd heard at some point that tickets for the next perf are sometimes released when the immediate preceding perf is under way.  is that an old wives' tale?

I'm really excited to see West Side on stage - the only production I've ever seen was a very cheesy one at Frank Sennes' Moulin Rouge, right after the movie came out.  It was a stellar cast, but really cheap sets and costumes - the cast?  Larry Kert, Carla Alberghetti, Tucker Smith, Tony Mordente, David Winters, Chita Rivera and several other movie cast members.

West Side Story: Seattle (1st run)
The Music Man (Seattle 1st run)
Casablanca  (late 1950s in a Seattle (Northgate) revival house.  Didn't like it the first time I saw it, but now it's my all-time favorite movie)
The Court Jester (either first run in Seattle, or in our summer home, Soap Lake WA)
Vertigo  (Seattle, 1st run)
The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad (TV)
Rosemary’s Baby (Seattle on a visit home)

Good Evening!

Well, I just left the par-tay downstairs - which was starting to wind down anyway - since I finally started feeling quite sleepy. It was a very nice gathering.  About 75 people showed up, and my father's sister has arranged all of it: food (a buffet of Filipino favorites), the music (a one-man band, and two singers), and even a program for the evening (dance, talk, dance, sing, dance, eat, dance, play games, dance, talk, dance...).

I met a lot of people, and I at least tried to get and remember the names of the people directly related to my father.  There were about 25 children in attendance, and I think I can only remember two of their names right now.  I also believe the Mayor of the town stopped by - at least that's what I think they said.

Good morning, all! I think I am caught up on three days worth of sleep now. The video's a hoot and it's always good to see Mr Graae as demure and shy as ever. Where is our DR Julie? Will she never return to us?

Today, lots of MOST HAPPY FELLA, and perhaps a break at some point with Mr Rodney Gilfry who is in town for his daughter's senior recital on Monday night at Juilliard, which I shall attend, missing the divine Donna Lynne Champlin's "Finishing the Act."

Yes, DR JRand58, the mail was held by my neighbor and I now have it.

Oh, and I'm up.  There were big, grotesque, loud trucks and men working from two in the morning until now.  It was unbelievably noisy, but I fell asleep and stayed asleep until my wake-up call.  How I slept through the noise, especially when I woke up, is unknown to me.  However, now that I'm up, the trucks are gone and it's absolutely quiet out there.

As for the Topic of the Day....

"West Side Story" - Most likely on Channel 20 in Washington, DC, during one of their "Great Musicals" festivals/marathons. I was probably 10, 11-years old.
"The Music Man" - A hotel room in Midlothian, VA, just outside of Richmond, when we headed down there for a little league baseball tournament that one of my younger brothers was playing in.
"Casablanca" - During the last week of school in Mr. Johnson's Sophomore (high school) English class.
"The Court Jester" - Again, most likely on Channel 20 out of DC.
"Vertigo" - Yep, Channel 20 during one of their Hitchcock festivals.
"The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad" - Channel 20
"Rosemary’s Baby" - Channel 7, when we lived in Gales Ferry, CT. They would show horror movies during the afternoon after-school block.  ??? -That was also the first time I saw "Trilogy of Terror".

DR Jane - As for the "Cheese" - It was a cheese-flavored sponge(?) cake. However, I'm not exactly sure what kind of cheese, probably cheddar.

And the adorable young girl in that picture is my cousin, Sophie.  At least I think she's a real cousin.  The doll she is holding is "Chrissa", which is this year's American Girl Place's "Girl/Doll of the Year". I believe her Uncle Jojo brought it from NYC with him for her. ;)

Good morning!

Going to be a hot one here today with highs in the upper 80s. The coolness of the morning was already going away by 10 a.m., and I had to shut the downstairs up to retain some of the earlier cool. I still have the windows open upstairs with both the attic fan and a floor fan going. They'll be shut off when I leave.

Tonight I'm going to see best friend John in a local production of THE FULL MONTY. He's got the smaller role of Reg in the production. My friend Gregg from Winston-Salem is driving down and we're going to see it together. We're going out to dinner before the show.

Looking forward to seeing the show again. Loved the NYC production. I'll be curious to see how it adapts to the community theater level.

WEST SIDE STORY: It was reissued in 70mm and played at Charlotte's Carolina Theater (the CInerama theater here in the city) around 1967 or so. I was appalled that they added an intermission to it IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RUMBLE!!!

THE MUSIC MAN: original release in 1962. The high school band was asked to play selections from the score outside the theater to drum up business, and then we were allowed to go inside to see the movie for free. Loved it.

ROSEMARY'S BABY: opening weekend in 1968 at the Park Terrace Theater in Charlotte

VERTIGO: the reissue of Hitchcock's prized Universal movies. Was that in the 1980s or 1990s? I can't remember.

The others (CASABLANCA, THE COURT JESTER) were on TV.

West Side Story: TV  whenver they first showed it.

The Music Man- First run and then on a double bill (with "Lawrence of Arabia") at the drive-in about 3 times.
Casablanca  saw it on TV a number of times and then at a few revival houses..  I remember that by the time, "Play It Again, Sam" came out, I already knew "Casablanca" by heart.
The Court Jester =this showed up as the second bill at drive-ins for abuot a decade ("It Happened  to Jane" with Doris Day was another that you could see at the drive-in and go home and watch on TV for about 10 years) and so saw it there a few times and a lot on TV as a kid.
Vertigo  (Art House revival and then on TV, but I wanted to see it on the big screen first)
The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad (Kiddie matinees-- probably at the Palms Theatre or Bethany West)
Rosemary’s Baby-- TV, or maybe even a video-- late 70's

I will be forever grateful to Benson and Hedges for sponsoring several summmers throughout the 70's of classic films on the big screen.  And there even a few big screens back then because it was before all the megaplexes took over.

I believe her Uncle Jojo brought it from NYC with him for her. ;)

I knew that couldn't be a solid hunk of cheese, interesting labeling.  ;D

Did you have a list of relatives to shop for before leaving or did you know ahead of time that sweet Sophie was in need of a doll from you ;)

I know too well what you mean.  I really feel for you.

For years & years my Mother-in-law's doctor drove us up a wall.  She, of the old school, never stood up to him & was happy to do whatever he said.  One day while we for visiting her Keith's aunt asked my brother in-law why he didn't go to the office visits with his mother.  It wasn't until that moment I realized he was just as frustrated as we were.  His response was "I will only yell at the jerk".

Fred,

There are three I can think of.

I know that [title of show] has something of a cult feeling to it (and I admit I'm part of the cult) so I would have been happy with that.

I would have been happy with the overlooked show, The Story of My Life (though that would have been a real long shot and my third choice out of the three)

Or, despite some of the reviews and Jason's very valid points about the show last night I would have given it to 9 to 5.

There are also four actors who should have been considered over Constantine Maroulis, Hunter Bell, Jeff Bowen, Will Chase or Malcolm Gets.

I do think that many Tony voters (despite the denials by some on the morning panel) voted for shows that are still running, not shows that were possibly deserving of nominations.

I don't know why I'm so annoyed but I just don't think you nominate "guilty pleasures" for major theatre awards.

I'm going now to eat my ground glass and then tie myself up on the mountain top so the crows can peck out my eyes  ;)

I also watched Thursday night's SOUTHLAND. I'm really enjoying the show a lot, but I could certainly be a lot happier if they'd just drop Sammy and Tami from the cast. I find them thoroughly unengaging. Everyone else seems interesting and worthy of further explorations of their characters.

I do think that many Tony voters (despite the denials by some on the morning panel) voted for shows that are still running, not shows that were possibly deserving of nominations.

Didn't the article in PLaybill say that the Tony committee disqualified THE STORY OF MY LIFE from any Tony consideration due to the briefness of its run and thus the inability of Tony voters to be able to judge it adequately.

I'll have a report on the show either later tonight or tomorrow.

Back from West Side Story.  I'll have much to say in the notes, but because I don't want to keep anyone in suspense, let's just say that Arthur Laurents not being nominated for a Tony is well deserved.  He needs to never be allowed again to come near any show he wrote - what he and his cohorts have done to this West Side Story is criminal and the fact that it's a hit speaks more to the power of the show itself (which is always criticized as being dated and silly these days) and the low values most of these inane tweens and teens who filled the theater and reacted as if they were watching American Idol.  The use of Spanish is stupid and pointless and robs the show of some of its best laughs.  One or two lines, okay.

Out of curiousity, were there people laughing at the parts in Spanish?  I'm thinking of those who are bilingual and whether their experience may have been different

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And I got up about an hour and a half ago - 5:30am, Bicol time - and took a walk. I was amazed at just how many people and things were already up and moving about.  And, yes, I took pictures.

DR DAW - Someday I, too, will "invest" in a KitchenAid mixer.  They're made in Greeneville, OH, and I understand there's a great outlet store.  It's about an hour's drive from our house.

DR Ginny - I've actually thought of getting another one. And with the various sales at Macy's, Williams-Sonoma, and Amazon, sometimes the "investment" isn't really that much of a $plurge.  I know that the 5-quart models are usually on sale at Macy's for just under $200 every other month.

I must say, my legs haven't been sore from exercise since I began the new jogging routine last July, but boy are they sore from this treadmill.
Is the treadmill on an incline?  That could account for the extra stress on your legs.  (But I don't suggest running backwards to counter the stress.)

Actually, if you're used to running on a flat surface outside, setting the incline on a treadmill to just 1 or 2 degrees is usually advised.  The incline helps to compensate for the lack of true forward motion, since the foot rolls from heel-to-toe and "strikes" differently than it would on the road.

Now, if bk is using the same running shoes since he started jogging last July, those could also be the culprit.

And setting the treadmill on a very low speed and walking backwards is good warm-down

I have no urge to pick a fight, but I haven't seen Mr Gilfry in two years and I've seen you since then. Also, to come to my defense, when DR FJL set the date for last night's event. I had already booked my time for both the DC trip and the McGlinnventory. When Skip called me yesterday morning, I had no idea how long I would be at the law office or how I would feel at the end of my day. I had until 2 pm to respond. Between the dust and the US post office's screwup with my mail, I was in no mood to be social with anyone. I would have loved to see everyone there, but you're not dumping guilt on my parade!

My day was peculiar: I got back from seeing Rodney Gilfry to find a phone invitation from goddaughter Charlotte to see a movie. We saw OBSERVE AND REPORT with Seth Rogen and Charlotte's godmother Celia Weston as his drunken mother. A truly off-kiltre film, I liked it very much. I didn't know where it would go and it reminded me a lot of TAXI DRIVER in its theme of alienation. During the movie, Charlotte's purse was rifled through and her cell phone, iPod, and cash stolen. We spent time with the police after the film, then headed to Verizon to report the theft. Ron and dona joined us at the Verizon store. It was fun.

The video: The man proceeds to remove a ballpoint pen from his pocket... And then a fork.

A Kitchen Aid stand mixer!

Oh man, I'm jealous about that one...congrats!
The KitchenAid der B and I bought shortly after moving to Rehoboth was a reconditioned model - basically, it had a scratch or something and was sent back to the shop because it wasn't perfect.  Believe me, it's perfect as it is, and we got it at a great discount.

We are back from a lovely dinner at the University Club in downtown Cincinnati.  We were just a few blocks from Great American Ballpark and heard the fireworks, which means the Reds scored a home run.

For dinner I had salmon, asparagus, and whipped potatoes, accompanied by a nice salad, rye salt stick, and Pinot Grigio.  The other entree choice was filet mignon, but the ones I saw on others' plates were too rare for me.  Dessert was Aglamesis raspberry sherbet/vanilla ice cream and a heavenly macaroon.  The Queen City Club is right across the street from the UC and, apparently, the two institutions compete for "best macaroon."

If my mixer were that beautiful red I might leave it on the counter, and then I might actually use it.  When I got my dream mixer, years ago, I was very disappointed.  It works great, however it isn't convenient.  It weighs a ton & you have to turn it off & lift the beaters in order to scrape the bowl with a spatula.  Looking at the photo it doesn't appear to have changed much from my model.  Once hand held mixers began to get good I ended up using my big Kitchen Aid for bread dough, mashed potatoes & not much else.

It was fun.

That's horrible!   How did that happen?  Had she set the purse down somewhere?

I always keep my purse on my lap, not out of fear of theft but that I will forget it or something.

VIBES SOMETHING IS FOUND!

I keep mine on my lap because god only knows what ends up on the floor of a movie theater

I cut a big bunch of lilacs off of one of the few bushes I didn't cut down a couple weeks ago. My living room now smells wonderful!
I envy you that, Priscilla.  I love lilacs and wish they grew here.

There are tons of them this year.  I love the scent.  I will say I envy you the sent of orange blossoms.  It was one of my favorite things about living in Phoenix

Why does Ghost Whisperer keep going over? At least here it was not marked in the listings. I had to go to a lot of trouble to catch the end (which i thought of skipping but i'm glad i didn't).

This week's episode was marked as lasting until 9:02 in my cable guide. I saw the entire show but the previews got snipped a tiny bit at the end.

What a warm evening it's been. Thank goodness they had th airconditioner on at the theater. It would have been very miserable without it. It was a sold out house, so it was very close in the theater.

Back from the show and a long night at Joe Allen.  The show, which I will not dwell on in the notes, was fine - the singer got nervous and her timing was off, she forgot a lyric on her opening number and why?  Because she was so busy waving and pointing at people she knew in the audience that the entire point of the number was lost and it all became amateur and silly and more about the audience than the singer.  She was in good voice, but her head was not where it should have been - when she stuck to what we'd done it was fine - when she veered it was painful.  At one point her head was so far not where it should have been that she jumped a number.  She also drank water after every single number - a total crutch - at every run-through we've had she has not taken one drink of water, let alone fourteen.  She dropped many lines, blew laughs, actually stopped in the middle of a very fast and complicated patter song to point out Jason Graae (embarrassing - the pianist literally had to stop till she could figure out how to get back on track), and on and on.  Also, we placed the stool so that she would never have to move it - we lit it and all she had to do was take a step backwards and sit.  So, what did she do - because her head was basically on another planet, she moved the stool - out of the light - into darkness - then she looks at me and says "am I out of the light?  Where should I move the stool?"  I tell her.  She still is half in and half out of the light, which she was for the entire show because she didn't look at her BIG spike mark and kept standing way to the left of it.  Her friends and family loved her and I'm sure she'll come away thinking she was brilliant.  Hopefully, she won't be asking me for my thoughts, because if she does she'll be getting them.  She's a very self-destructive performer - constant shooting herself in the foot.  And all because she can't focus and concentrate and do what we rehearsed.  It's a really cute and good act, and I fear she will never get it right, and after last night, I'm not going to be along for this ride anymore.

Joe Allen was grand fun - I'll talk about THAT in the notes.

THE FULL MONTY has always been a fun show, and this production I saw tonight had many professional things about it and some other things that clearly made it community theater. I certainly couldn't fault the casting of the pricipal males. The show's score is notoriously tricky and high, and I wondered if they could find actors talented enough to negotiate it. No problems in that regard at all.

I was disappointed a bit in the choreography, and some of the sets were ticky-tack. But overall, it was a good community theater production.

Since best friend John was part of the cast and I knew several others in the company, I had some folks back to the house for drinks after the show.

I made a mean batch of margaritas if I do say so myself. We had a good time laughing over the evening's performance, both the good and the not so great.

But it's been a long day, so I need to head downstairs to bed now.

Good night!
