Well, you've read the notes, the notes were high and had definition, and now it is time for you to post until the hi-def cows come home - they're currently watching a Moo-Ray disc.

Re: The blurring

I believe it is an anomaly with LCD, LED & Plasma TVs. Plasma is the best with blur reductions, but on fast moving images such as car chase, horse racing there is a blur effect.

I found this online that explains the situation

One of the biggest challenges for LCD TV manufacturers has been speeding up the pixel response time, which is how fast an individual pixel's color can change without blurring, to ensure that fast-moving objects don't exhibit motion lag or ghosting. Increasing pixel response time is especially critical for larger-screen LCD's where much of the viewing will be DVD movies and/or HDTV.

You might have needed to get a LCD from what I am reading so far.

Some solutions

There may be a function on your TV or Blu-Ray player that is called Blur reduction. This might help. Also Try increasing to 100hz/120hz if your set has it

Here is an article talking about LCD HD-TV offers motion blur removal and film de-judder

http://eetimes.eu/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=197800809 (http://eetimes.eu/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=197800809)

It is a lot of techno bable, but essentials it is a computer module that HD are starting to put into there tvs

a highlight that may really help

The best method of overcoming the motion blur effect of LCD TVs is to double the image rate (from 50/60fps to 100/120fps).

here is an article from Home Theater Magazine about Motion Blur it is the best explaination that I have seen so far. It has diagrams that explain what actually happens

http://hometheatermag.com/gearworks/707gear/ (http://hometheatermag.com/gearworks/707gear/)

selected quotes from the article

let's look at what causes motion blur, why it may or may not be a big deal, and how a 120-Hz refresh rate can help solve the problem for LCDs.

The above article was written in 2007, but it seems things haven't changed much

Thursday morning greetings!  After an evening of heavy thunderstorms, it's a gloriously sunny day here in SE Wisconsin.  I'm very glad for that, because it's Nashotah House commencement day and those graduates would get very wet waiting to ring the campus bell - a graduation tradition.  One of Richard's classmates is graduating today and one of his fellow graduates is here for the festivities.

DRs MBarnum and JRand - I went to three video stores in Market! Market! earlier tonight/today, and none of them had any sort of sizable collection of Filipino movies.  I'd say about 95% of the titles they had in stock were American movies.  We're going to a "Super Mall" tomorrow afternoon, and there's supposed to be a more traditional store.  Maybe I'll find some things there.

As for today's trip to Villa Escudero...

The "worst" part of the day was getting there and getting back.  The traffic here in Manila is some of the worst I've ever experienced - and I was just a passenger.  Additionally, the whole traffic control system here is basically non-existent.  Stop lights are a rarity. You basically drive with your hand on your horn, "beep-beep" when you want to change lanes and/or warn the driver next to you that you're about to run into him.  And as for the lane markings on the road, they might as well not be there at all.  In any case...

Once we arrived at Villa Escudero, we all enjoyed a nice, leisurely paced day taking in Filipino culture.  I'd have to say that Villa Escudero is sort of like Colonial Williamsburg with a bit of the Hearst Castle thrown in.  The Escudero family owns and runs the Villa, and the museum is basically a showcase for all their various collections - everything from collectable spoons to taxidermy to historical clothes and uniforms to religious artifacts.  Truly eclectic.

We did dine by the waterfall with our feet in the water.  It was yet another Filipino food buffet, and even though it was well-prepared, I just didn't have that much of an appetite for yet another round of "traditional dishes".  -Thankfully, there was no balut on the table. ;)

After lunch, we all took a break until the "cultural presentation".  There was a leisure hall where one could play darts, billiards, pool or participate in some "videoke".  Needless to say, my father could not resist picking up the microphone again, and he managed to keep himself occupied for the hour we had to wait.  I just walked around for a bit taking pictures and checking out the rest of the grounds: the swimming pool, the "cultural statuary", the dock area right above the falls.

The "Cultural Presentation" was pretty good, and, surprisingly not tacky.  Well, not that tacky.  The announcer spoke in a combination of game show host, car salesman and National Geographic narrator.  They basically went through the history of the Philippines through its music and dances.  When we lived in Seattle, I played bandurion - a crazily-stringed mandolin - in "Bayanihan", which functions as a sort of a Filipino cultural ambassador.  So, a lot of the songs and dances that were presented today were somewhat familiar to me, and I was surprised at how many of the tunes I recognized.  I was especially glad to see the dances where the men and women balance candles or glasses of water/wine on their head and other parts of their body; and the tinikling always excites me.  The dancers dance in, around and between a set of bamboo poles that are knocked and banged together by two additional performers.  Toes can and have been lost doing the tinikling!  However, even though I know it's a part of Filipino culture, I wasn't exactly sure how to take the "rendition" of cock-fighting that used two real live cocks, roosters.

...And then came the long ride home.

BK:

Here's what you wrote last night:

The Professionals looks absolutely incredible - there does seem to be a bit of blurring on really fast motion shots, sort of a digital thing - the TV comes with a standard setting for the 120hz function - I tried the "smooth" setting, but it didn't seem any different, but maybe I'll test that out with this disc and see if it makes any difference.

I had no idea you were asking for advice or help or I would have offered some.

LCDs are the most subject to motion blur, more than plasmas and certainly more than the rear projection set you've been using for the past six years.

If your TV is reading 1080p @ 24 hz and your Blu-ray player is set up to display Blu-ray in that mode, that is the best mode Blu-ray offers. It matches film projection at 24 fps so it should give the images (if properly transferred) the most film-like appearance. Changing it to 60 hz means your player and TV will be doing interpolations (called 3:2 pulldown) to take 24fps images and display them at 30 hz (or 60 since they're doubled). Theoretically, this shouldn't be as good as 24 hz, but you certainly should try both 24 hz and 60 hz to see if you see any difference or which one you like best. (This is changed in the set-up menu of the Blu-ray player. Simply turn off the 24 hz control from the setup menu.)

Every single review I have read of ANY LCD that has that "smooth motion" feature that increases the scanning to 120 hz has cautioned users to turn it OFF. Every reviewer feels it gives an artificial look to the image making film appear more like video shot on tape (like a live action sports event rather than film).

I believe the blurring is something that is endemic to LCD sets. It has nothing to do with the HDMI cable or the Blu-ray player. It is purely the LCD technology.

BK, when I was looking to upgrade to an LCD or Plasma TV one of the things that was very important to me was a TV that had minimal, if any, of that motion blurring.

The clerk who helped me steared me towards the Toshiba LCD which I now have, and I have not experienced any blurring.

One of the selling points for that particular model at the store was the fact that it had little to no blurring when the camera would pan. And they had set up a little display to show the difference.

DR MattH, when you were asking who was with ben (locke guy). I was also wondering
if you meant who exactly he was. Or if you wanted the same answer DR JMK gave (that
it was the guy we saw talking with jacob at the beginning). Jacob said that guy
needed to find a way to kill him. And so at the end when jacob said, "so you found
a way". IT was clear it was the same guy. But i also have no idea who he is. I

I'm up, and thanks for the blur information.  I have an LED not LCD, but I'm sure they're similar.  Interestingly, as I said, the store player said 1080p at 60hz, my home one says 1080p at 24hz, but I was told that the store player was on its factory settings - since I haven't changed anything on mine, they, too, should be on the factory settings - I think I'll call Samsung.  And yes, the new TVs have that motion blur thing at 120hz for smooth motion.  But there is definitely blur and SOME images - which I did not see in the store at all, but then maybe the test discs they were using didn't show blur as much.  At home here, sometimes it's the entire right side of the screen from top to bottom, and sometimes it's at the top or bottom of the screen all the way across.  Again, it's really sporadic and only lasts a second.  None of the Blu-Rays I've looked at had what I would call film look, no matter how old the film.  They all look like they were shot yesterday with a hi-def camera - it's amazingly sharp, though.  I had one of the settings on "movie" instead of standard, but all that did was make the image darker and more yellow - as you know, I don't cotton to yellow.

MattH, can you talk me through changing the 120hz to whatever you think will make it look more like film - just so I can see the difference.  And also anything else I should be doing, like whether keeping the 24hz or changing to 60hz and how to do that.

For Druxy, I'll be interested to hear what he has to say when he watches a Blu-Ray disc because he has the same TV as me and I'm sure he hasn't futzed with the settings.

"LOST" SPOILERS

You may all thank me later for my correct prediction vis a vis Lost's finale.

I think I'm starting to see through the show's machinations at a higher rate than I used to--I also guessed early into the episode what was in "the box."

So who's that with Ben?

Well we know it's the guy in the prelude, but as to whom exactly that is, I have no clew.  :)[/size]

Well, I can't give high marks to Samsung's customer service - I went up to second tier support to no avail, and now some tech person at the top will be calling back - in twenty-four to forty-eight hours - not what I expect and/or want.  But, we did discover the problem with the Blu-Ray player reading out 24hz rather than 60 - it's broken.  The only way it could be reading out 24hz is if I had selected the option in the menu for 24fps - that setting is OFF (factory preset), therefore the machine should be reading out 60hz automatically.  So, I'm about to take that back to Fry's.  As to the weird motion blur stuff, which isn't really like what I'm reading about online, I'll discuss that with Fry's, too, and perhaps just ask them to swap out the TV with another, to see if that makes any difference.  If not, perhaps I'll just get the LCD model (55-inch) - it's cheaper and I presume they'll give me a credit of some sort.

BK-

The best place to go for advice on your problem and with good starter settings is the AVS Forum. (avsforum.com)

Once there, enter the make and model number of your TV in the search engine, and it will take you to the user forum for your particular model. There people suggest the best settings to put the TV in to get the best picture, troubleshoot, etc. (I have a Samsung but not your model and my settings would not work for you.)

You don't even have to join the forum to read all the posts. If you want to ask questions about your particular problem or to ask questions about anything TV-related, there will be someone there with answers. I've never been there that I couldn't get help or really GOOD information about any equipment I've owned.

I got a 52" Samsung LCD, which is supposed to be the best re: blur control.  Did a lot of research before I chose that model.  As I recall, it cost about $2300.00.

Also got the Samsung Home Theatre (surround sound/Blu-ray player) package...and had the dealer install it.

I've got a Panasonic plasma TV.  Haven't seen any blurring at all.

I have a Panasonic plasma TV and I've noticed some in "Battlestar Galactica" and "Psych." :-\

But it hasn't really bothered me...yet.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And it's raining in Manila.  -It's the first time that I've seen it rain since I've been here, which is a sort of unusual - and lucky? - since rain is a regular part of the forecast here.

I'm currently watching "The Today Show" on Channel 19, a.k.a. Second Avenue... Matt, Meredith, Al and Ann... I'm trying to figure out if I'm watching "today", "yesterday" or "tomorrow"?

And when they break away for the local update during the weather, all I hear is Al Roker sighing and breathing.  ;)

Went back to Fry's and got a replacement Blu-Ray player, which is fine now.  I talked to my sales guy, who's really great, and he talked me through potential workarounds, all of which I've tried, and none of which completely alleviate the problem, and most of which introduce other issues.  Movie mode is the worst - ugly, brown, and dim.  I've run a lot of clips and still nothing looks really film-like - maybe that's just the way it is with Blu-Ray.  I currently have it set for BDWise, which means the player reads the disc and sets everything automatically from what's coming off the disc, including 24fps.  It's really sharp, colorful, and excellent.  I've also shut off BDWise, and watched at 60hz and that's really super sharp but totally hi-def looking, i.e. not film.  I've also shut off BDWise and enabled 24fps, which looked very similar to the BDWise.  So, that's where I'm at.  My sales guy told me the TV can come back immediately if I'm not happy, and we can replace or choose any other model I'd like.  I did look at other sets while I was there.  I think the choice is going to be DLP or LCD or LED or Plasma.  I looked at the equivalent Samsung plasma, which is actually a teeny bit larger than the LED - excellent picture but the whites aren't nearly as white as the LCD/LED, one of which is next to the plasma.  It's all very confusing.  I think I'll go to avsforum.com and see what they have to say.

Saturday I took the Vixter and three of her friends to NYC to celebrate her sixteenth birthday

We started out by lunching at John's pizza which the girls all loved

then we walked up to the New Stages Theatre to see AltarBoyz
Title: Re: HIGH DEFINITION
Post by: vixmom on May 14, 2009, 08:15:00 PM
Lunch and the walk took less time than I had expected so we had about a half hour to spend before we went into the theatre - it turns out that the theatre is right next to that lovely little park where many of us gathered for a visit during the NYMF 2 years ago

the girls amused themselves by singing and playing with a puppy that a nice man  was walking.

Then we went into the show - I had gotten a great deal with a promo code and got $30 seats and they were 4th row center orchestra - the girls were thrilled and then the Altarboyz came out... oh my!  Each one was better looking than the next and the cutest ones had the tightest jeans and there was an abundance of hip wiggling onthat stage --
you were right, Jose - it was a perfect show for four 16 year old gilrs - they LOVED it!

bk,

Do you have a spare set of rabbit ears/antenna sitting around your house? I ask because if you do, you need to hook them up and let your TV's built in digital tuner pull in some high definition television broadcasts. (Unless you changed your dish set-up, you're not currently receiving high def from disc, so you'd need to use an indoor antenna to pull in local HD broadcasts from various LA stations.

You keep blaming this look on Blu-ray, and I think you need to consider that you haven't seen what high def broadcasting looks like on your set. Once you see that and then compare a Blu-ray film to it, you'd be better able to judge if Blu-ray is your problem or if it's merely that you haven't seen enough high definition on a large screen to be used to it yet.

Sunday was Mother's Day - so after church the Vixter and I went to see my mother and bring her some gifts and flowers and pastries.

When we got home we found that Vixdad had given me a great Mother's Day present - he and a local handy man cut down a 40 foot tree that I have hated for the 17 years that have lived here

It was a sumac tree and it dropped  leaves and sticks all over the yard, was shading the pool and the bushes and the two nice maples that I love and was causing them to die.

The Vixter and I spent the rest of the glorioulsy sunny and warm afternoon in the back yard bagging up twigs and leaves  while Vixdad cut the trunk and larger branches  into firewood

Finally as dusk arrived we came in and got cleaned up and then went to the Outback for dinner

I manged a little bit but I really am not good at eating yet still the tenderlon was tender indeed and I did manage a few bites and the crab stuffed shrimp was delicious , I managed to eat one of the four they gave me and the sweet potato was delish loaded with butter and brown sugar

Title: Re: HIGH DEFINITION

Last week the Vixter fell off of her bicycle into the street and scraped and bruised her knee - she iced it and hadn't mentioned it since and I thought no more about it

after all we walked all over the city on Saturday with no complaints -

So I called the cotor and made an appointment and left work early and came home to get her -

I asked her to show me her knee and it was swollen to about twice the size of the other knee

The doctor gave us a prescription for an antibiotic because she said the swelling was hot which indicated an infection and referred us to a othopedic doctor

Title: Re: HIGH DEFINITION
Post by: vixmom on May 14, 2009, 08:42:32 PM
So on Tuesday I left work ealry and took her to the orthopedic doctor who xrayed her knee and found no fractures.  I was not surprised since she 'd been walking fine for the past 5 days despite the swelling - (which she never mentioned!!!)

He prescribed an anti-inflamatory for the swelling and asked us to come back next week for a followup when he will decides if the swelling has gone down enough or if he needs to aspitrate fluid with a needle

Basically, the May 15th deadlines are the special forms for certain companies that use a non-calendar year, returns for private foundations and some other non-profits, and the Texas corporate returns.

Thanks MattH for the avsforums link.  They did indeed have an eighty-four page thread on my TV - I read it for a couple of hours - and someone complained about exactly what I was seeing.  Someone suggested changing the AMP setting to custom, moving the motion blur thing to ten (instead of five) and the jutter control to 0 (instead of 5).  I did that and voila, no more haloing or blurring and more importantly, everything suddenly looked more like film.  Not quite as razor sharp as it looked when it looked like everything had been shot yesterday with a hi-def camera, but a very good image.  So those problems are solved.  Setting the player and TV for BD Wise means the player outputs exactly what it reads from the Blu-Ray disc - i.e. 24fps.  So, I think I'm set.  Of course, I was getting used to the almost 3D look of everything before making these changes - Black Narcissus, while looking more film-like, doesn't have quite the incredible detail it had the other way.  I'll spend another day and see how I feel.  I've read a lot of differing reports on plasma TVs - including that they're on their way out.  I do know that in the store the LCD next to the Samsung plasma was much more pleasing to the eye, but someone said that was because it's so much brighter and that in a dark viewing environment the plasma would be much more pleasing.  It's all very confusing.

I'm too tired to read the posts till tomarrow evening, it's been a 16 hour day for me so far.  I feel too old for this.

I had to drive my dad's car home from the hospital, it had been parked there for 6 days.    I had not driven a stick shift since the early 1980's.  I never made it out of 2ND gear, stalled, and  was very afraid at every stop.  Luckily Burbank is almost all senior citizens and no one seemed to care that I was going really really slow.
