Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both fruitful and fruity, and now it is time for you to post until the fruity cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  anything that Fredric Brown wrote.

Otherwise, "The Sword of Shannara" by Terry Brooks.  I loved this book and the next several in the series.  I started reading them in high school, but there got to be too many for me to keep up with, so I stopped.

While the writing is sometimes a bit dorky, the world and rules created by Robert Jordan in The Wheel of Time series is very interesting.

DR George that is terrible that your ABC station is not showing PUSHING DAISIES at any time. I'm glad someone can record it for you.  Right now the only way i have to copy is to VCR. My digital only records to my tv.

I am really looking forward to seeing all the ABC cancelled shows (ELI STONE and DIRTY SEXY MONEY too).  Hopefully they'll give a good recap. Cause i can't really remember where any of the series are.

BK, I didn't bother to see LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, because I am a huge fan of the graphic novel, the premise of which takes several iconic fictional figures from late 19th-early 20th century adventure/fantasy fiction and brings them altogether...figures from the books of Rider Haggard, Sax Rohmer, Conan Doyle, etc.  many of which I have collected and read since I was a boy.  When I heard about changes that were going on I knew the movie would be no good.  But the graphic novel is clever and a great lot of fun.

TOD:  This one's easy.  The Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett.  Essentially comic fantasy, they transcend the genre and are some of the funniest, fall out of bed laughing, smartest satires ever written.  They can also be moving and poignant as well.  During the Bush era,  I used to evoke a quote from Mr. Pratchett's novel THUD:  "You can't call yourselves the good guys and do bad things."

I'm up, I'm up... And I've actually been up since 8:00.  Just stayed in bed listening to NPR's Weekend Edition.  Had to make sure I got out of bed before "Car Talk" began - or I'd never leave my room today. ;)

It looks like I will be going to DC on June 15, but alas, only for the day. We will leave here in the early morning, arrive in time for a noon meeting at our DC location on K Street and leave on the first train after 3pm that we can catch. We will have a meeting with people from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. I doubt that Mr. Gates himself will be there but still, it's pretty cool. I've suddenly become the Presentation Master. In April I had a presentation to our Board of Directors, the next week I made a presentation to people at the Ford Foundation, Thursday I had the Annie E. Casey meeting and a presentation to the Senior Managers at the FC. Now I'm going to DC for the Gates Foundation and if the madness continues I may have to make another presentation to the Henry Luce Foundation on the very next day I'm back from DC.

I don't know how it all happened but it's fun, for a while anyway.

I won't have any time to spend in DC so I can't see my friends or have dinner or go early (on the weekend), since we are already booked up with New York events (including Anthony's birthday on June 10).

Looks like a busy June.

I was out fairly early this morning mowing my front yard. (Not as early as previous attempts. I slept until after 8 a.m. which is rare for me.) I probably could have a wait a few more days, but it's nice to have that done and behind me for awhile. If the rain holds off for a week, I'll be able not to mow again for a couple of weeks.

My work project today will be THE CLEANER. Looks like I'll be spending all day on it since there are a goodly amount of bonus features on each disc and commentaries, too. Reviewing old series usually means looking at just the episodes as the amount of supplementary material is rather meager, but today's shows generally film a bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff with a DVD release in mind.

Saturday morning greetings!  I'm home from a breakfast meeting with my friends in AAUW and we began planning for the upcoming program year.

Last night we thoroughly enjoyed the dance concert at the University of Cincinnati.  Mary Linda was in 2 of the 4 pieces - the first very contemporary (with motion sensors) and the second (my favorite) ragtime selections called "IN Rags OH My."  She has 2 performances today and a matinee tomorrow.

Pogue, after watching the movie I read up on production history of the film - it appears that Connery and the director hated each other, and the authors of the graphic novel were not happy with the film at all.  It appears they changed most of the characters, which could be the problem - for example, adding Tom Sawyer as a gun-toting action hero.

TOD - Richard and I were just talking about the "created world" in the audiobook we're listening to in the car - the first in Jan Karon's Mitford series.  Fictional Mitford, NC, has all these independent businesses that would have a hard time surviving in today's economy, including an independent bookstore.  But I've listened to the entire series before and, by the end, those places and people have become quite real to the listener.

I saw THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN when I was Music Directing a little revue at the coastal town of Seaside.  It was a beautiful summer gig--I would drive down there on Thursday afternoons, do Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows and then drive back after the Saturday show to be home in time for my church gig.  I never had anything to do on Fridays and Saturdays, and saw a lot of movies that summer (LARA CROFT was another one).  It was pretty bad, as I recall.

Book with a fictional world:  SHADOWLAND  (little joke there).

DISCWORLD was one of the most lamentable animated sets I ever had to review.  Pure, unadulterated dreck.

JMK, thanks for the tip about the DISCWORLD animated sets...I've been contemplating buying these because I love the books so much.  But given your review, I think I'll take a pass.

They've done two live 4-hour versions of HOGFATHER and THE COLOUR OF MAGIC (which I think also may include part of the second book in the series; COM was the first).  HOGFATHER is a pretty good and thorough adaptation of the book.  I just ordered the COLOUR OF MAGIC...which I'm a little leery of given the casting of Sean Astin in a part I'm not sure he's right for, but it is by the same team that did HOGFATHER, so we'll see.

But you what...I'd be hard put to think of any situation where the movie is ever better than book.  The book is almost always better.

Pogue, I think I mentioned in my review (it was a long time ago, so I can't totally recall) that it seemed to me the time was ripe for a live-action CGI-fest with DISCWORLD.  The source material is delightful, it's just that the animated versions were horrid.

Does anyone know something about a film called A BRUSH WITH LIFE?  Someone just emailed me off of my PASSION OF THE CHRIST BD review and asked me if I were the filmmaker of BRUSH WITH LIFE.  I've Googled and can't find enough info to even know what they're talking about.  Of course, I'm virtually certain I'm *not* the filmmaker, but I'd like to be absolutely sure before I respond.  ;)

It's my understanding that it was because of this film that Connery retired from acting.  It was such a miserable experience for him.

LOL, I've always taken the Prius to the dealer.  Never wanted a cheap oil change to turn into a major FU by someone who messes with something they shouldn't on the hybrid stuff.

Anyway, I traded my 2005 Prius with close to the most basic package for a 2009 Prius that is the top of the line and my car payment goes up.....$7.00 that's right Seven dollars. There's a zero percent financing thing going on and that makes a ton of difference.   My warranty was getting close to expiration and an out of warranty Prius is major bucks to repair.  So, I'm very pleased.  It has all the bells and whistles.  I used the voice commands and had it call my dad, it was fun to say "Hi, my car just called you".

As much as I keep trying to get rid of things I no longer want to dust.  They keep multiplying everytime I move or move things around.   And I know exactly how many car loads of stuff I've already taken to Out of the Closet, so where is it still coming from.

Moved the computer out of the bedroom (can't stay up till midnight anymore), I need to get a least 7 hours of sleep to function at work.

I remember Lankershim Blvd., from being a teenager and sneaking into the El Portal as a movie theatre.  I don't remember much else other than the 70's and 80's had a real down turn.  Now it has become popular again and the apt's are too expensive for me to move into.  So I ended up in Studio City instead last December.

Better get back to moving things around.

Glorious Saturday vibes for all.

Topic of the Day:  My kid would read like a bottomless pit when she was younger.  It started with the series Goosebumps,  and then reading took on a life of it's own.  We had so many books within a few years that when her elementary school opened the new library, we filled several shelves with donated paperbacks.  She still reads fantasy every chance she gets.

Good Afternoon!

I did make another stop back at Academy this morning, and I came away with another $100+.  -And considering that I only ever bought CDs on sale and/or with a coupon, I'm pretty sure I only lost about half of what I paid for them in the first place.  Not a bad return at all.  :)

*I mentioned to the buyer that I might be down a couple more times with a couple(!) more items. He said that if I had a good amount of CDs, that I could arrange for a "house call": they'd come to the apartment, look over what I have, give me a $$ and then take them away for me.  Hmmm...

And since City Bakery is just across the street from Academy, I went ahead and had lunch there instead of foraging and gathering in the Union Square Greenmarket.  They had a great salad made with sweet potatoes with grilled pineapple.  Total YUM!

*And, for the first time in a long time, I savored a cup of City Bakery's practically world-famous hot chocolate.  Ooohh sooooo goooood!

And then I did end up heading over to the Union Square Greenmarket.  I just browsed and browsed and browsed... for almost three hours. :)

It was sunny enough to keep things bright, and cloudy and breezy enough to keep things on the cool side.  A perfect day for marketing. And for taking pictures too.

And, yes, for sampling some radishes, snap peas, apples, asparagus, yogurt, goat milk, cheeses, cherry juice, rosemary-lemon sorbet...

I don't know what time you were there but we probably just missed you. We had some errands to run and then went to Academy. Yes, that feeling when you walk out with the cash is nice. We haven't taken the store credit usually because we have so many CDs that using the credit to buy more isn't what we need, besides the cash is easier to use at a place like City Bakery. They don't look well on paying for a hot chocolate with a copy of LoveMusik

DR Cillaliz - congratulations on your new car!  Sounds like an offer you just couldn't refuse!

It really was. I planned to see what I could get for my car (I checked the blue book value before I went) and really wanted to look at a 2010 Prius. (they are completely different cars than this model - but weren't in yet) I didn't plan to buy, but when he put the numbers in front of me I just couldn't see a good argument for not buying now. I called my dad and my brother and even ran it past the people at the post office. (two of the employees had very recently taken advantage of similar deals and gotten new cars) Eveyrone agreed that I shouldn't pass this deal up.  I'm now very glad I got it.

DR Cillaliz - Congrats on the new Wheels!  Did you get the same color?

Yup, it's black and from the outside looks exactly like my old car (minus some scratches and a couple dings on the old one)  it has upgraded wheels, but I'm not sure anyone would really notice that. My neighbor couldn't even tell, lol.  The interior color is the same too and the interior looks a lot like the old car.  It isn't until you realize the seats are leather and see all the gadgets that you realize this is definitely a nicer car.

I also paid my respects, as it were, to the Virgin Megastore at Union Square.  The signs say they are going into their last week, and that everything is now 40%-off.  There is a lot of stock left on the shelves - I'm guessing they consolidated a bunch of the stuff from the now-closed Times Square location. Of course, since that's 40% off of the list price, it's basically Amazon pricing. ;) However, since the electronics and accessories are also 40% off, there are some pretty good deals in that department.

I think for longevity that Susan Boyle will have more of a career. Dance groups like Diversity (which I've seen) are good for the moment but I suspect won't be around 5 years from now. Someone will want to strike out on their own and that will be the end of it. While Boyle can have a career singing if she has the right management that won't take advantage of her, I hope see will succeed and be like her idol Elaine Paige

The Times Square location closed about two months ago, and I believe the Union Square and L.A. locations started their official Closing sales at the beginning of this month.

As for what did them in, well... Yes, the internet (legal and illegal downloads) undoubtedly contributed to their demise.  However, I also think that consumers just got smarter in a sense.  There's been some weird "math" in regards to CD prices: as the cost to produce them came down, the retail cost of them went up.

I also know that Virgin, in particular, was affected by the real estate market.  Their stores were in prime locations with ever-increasing rents.  Rumor was the the rent on the NYC locations was going to increase 3 to 5-fold if not more.

Did Barnes and Noble "invest" in the cast recording of West Side Story so they can have an "exclusive" edition with 3 extra tracks?

I am sure it cost extra to pressed x amount of cds with the bonus tracks and the printing of the cd inserts as well has to have a separate press run

A friend of mine just called wondering if something had "happened".  He's down in The Village, and noticed a whole bunch of police cars and other official looking vehicles driving around.  After checking some tweets, it appears that the Obama's are having dinner at Blue Hill before heading up to the Belasco for tonight's performance of Joe Turner's Come and Gone.

Quote

What Do Your Movie Posters Say About You?

Okay, so it’s one of my very favourite movies of all time, so chances are I would have bought the poster even if it just featured Jack Nicholson eating dim sum. But this particular design (by Jim Pearsall) really is, to quote Alan Partridge, “premier league”. I love the weird, dreamy mood, with the smoke from Jake Gittes’ cigarette wafting up and transforming into Evelyn Mulway’s hair; the features of her face looming out of the bleached-out background like a femme-fatale Cheshire cat; the solitary wave breaking against the shadowy P.I., nodding at the water-driven plot that will first bring these two characters together and then destroy them. This is none more film noir and I never get tired of looking at it. For added appreciation, just look at the lousy poster for sequel The Two Jakes, which throws in the same ingredients — Nicholson, cigarette and mysterious lady — yet gets it all wrong.

I wonder why she sang the same song again.  I wonder if her meltdown this week contributed.

I'm curious what others think of Diversity (dance group that won). I saw their semi-finals. And while they were okay. they certainly weren't spectacular to me.

Question:

Did Barnes and Noble "invest" in the cast recording of West Side Story so they can have an "exclusive" edition with 3 extra tracks?

I am sure it cost extra to pressed x amount of cds with the bonus tracks and the printing of the cd inserts as well has to have a separate press run

They did the same with the Patti Lupone GYPSY and the new SOUTH PACIFIC.

Does the GYPSY recording have the, "Stop!  Stop!  Stop!"?

THAT is a stupid show anyhow:

How can they have a Dance Group compete against a singer etc ...

Obviously, Susan Boyle can't do what Diversity does, and Diversity can't sing the way she does.

Not to worry: Ms Boyle is going to get a recording contract; she already has the exposure and brou-ah-ah!.....

I think Susan Boyle could star in Gypsy as Mama Rose!

LATIMES (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-budget30-2009may30,0,3948176.story?page=1)

The latest in CA's budget fiasco:

Quote
Schwarzenegger would save $100 million by suspending laws requiring the state to pay for a variety of local government services, including offering absentee ballots before elections, resolving child custody problems, investigating deaths at mental hospitals, posting safety signs on beaches, collecting DNA samples from bodies, caring for abandoned pets and many more.

Local governments would have to pay for the services or stop providing them.

My prognosis:

The legislature will be unable to agree on a budget.

Interest groups whose ox is about to be gored (and there are many) will be filing suits in Federal court to stop the funding cuts.

Either way, CA will end up in receivership and a Federal judge will attempt to sort out the mess – good luck! No one has proposed a workable solution that would not require a rewrite of the CA constitution (to undo the damage caused by past voter initiatives) and a major overhaul of exiting employee contracts – Admin types at California Universities pulling down $300,000/yr need a major pay cut.

If you charge them interest retroactively at current market rates, you should have enough for a stamp and small profit in about 50 years.

*However, I was tempted to buy one of the many(!) 5-disc CD changers they used for the in-house sound system.  They're going for $30 each.  We shall see...

Has the Virgin in LA bit the dust too?  I was shocked, when in London this January, to see the Virgin Mega Store in Picadilly has closed.  Is the internet just killing them all?  The HMV looked shabbier than I had ever seen it as well.  Dress Circle was holding its own, but not quite what it once was.

There were no bargains at the Virgin Megastores.

I watched seven more episodes of THE CLEANER. It's SO unpleasant watching people shooting up drugs, getting high, and pretty much stringing themselves out in some of these episodes. And the personal lives of the team of interventionists are also very rocky, so though there are success stories, it's a struggle with every single episode to turn things around.

The clients have run the gamut from high school students to FBI agents to bikers to soccer moms so they do mix up the playing fields and turf of their clients.

Most of the episodes don't feature famous guest stars, but there have been a few. Bruce Davison was a race horse owner with a junkie jockey in one episode. Steve Lawrence also guest starred in that episode as a track handicapper.

In the episode I just finished watching, Isaiah Washington played a rival interventionist to Benjamin Bratt. Washington played the same kind of smug prick he played on GREY'S ANATOMY. He's got that down to a science. Kathy Baker was also a guest star in this episode as the mother of a beauty queen addict.

I'm going to write for a little bit and then head back downstairs, this time to bed.

Good night!

It has been a very nice, very warm day. Now I shall relax with a Tamil (Kollywood) film titled ANNIYAN. It is some sort of action film featuring one of my favorite Indian actors, Vikram.

Strangly enough, Vikram's birth name was John Kennedy (b. 1968). He is rather a hottie, IMHO.

Good Evening!

Many, Many Thanks to DR FJL's ever-lovin' Skip for preparing another lovely dinner, and many thanks to DR FJL for inviting me over for tonight's feast.  I had a great time, and met some new people too.  -And since we had some people in common... Pick-a-little, talk-a-little, pick-a-little, talk-a-little...  :)

-And those pics look just so... well... happy!

And since I just checked my email and was reminded that I'm supposed to head out to Jersey City in the morning for a brunch...

Goodnight.

Today was a very long day.  I went to work for a couple of hours, mail a couple of packages to DRs TCB and Elmore (expect them sometime next week!), and then I helped my sister move a van-load of stuff from her current house to her new house.  I helped for three solid hours and boy was it hot today!  I was sweating like a horse...if you've ever seen the movie of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," you know what I mean. :P

Then, I went to see a production of Flight of the Lawnchair Man at the Evergreen State College.  My friend Josh (director and music director of Reefer Madness! The Musical!) was the music director/pianist for Lawnchair Man.  It was wonderful!  Absolutely delightful.  There was so much energy from these kids.  Josh told me that most of them have had no acting experience.  You couldn't tell.  I only knew the show from the CD (excerpts?) on 3HREE (http://www.amazon.com/3hree-Original-Cast-Recordings/dp/B000059LF1/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1243751703&sr=8-1).  This was a full 90 minute show with no intermission.  I had a great time.

Tomorrow, I need to be at my sister's house by 10:00 am.  She's giving one of her TV cabinets to the brother of a friend of hers and I'm going to help him load it into whatever truck he's bringing.  My sister, however, will be directing the professional movers that she's hired in loading her stuff into their moving truck.  Then, I'll help with more moving until I have to go to rehearsal.

I'm very much looking forward to all of these last episodes.  Hopefully, there wasn't any trouble with Matt's recording of tonight's episode. :)

And speaking of great deals...

The new cast recording of West Side Story is released this coming week.  And if you buy from Barnes and Noble (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/West-Side-Story/e/886975308521/?cds2Pid=17318) - sorry, DR td! - you get three exclusive bonus tracks.  $9.99 [or $8.99 if you are a member].

I just bought mine...it's cheaper than Amazon!
