Today is the annual Open House at the Putnam County Playhouse where some of the numbers from KISS ME KATE will be foisted on an unsuspecting public that is more interested in free cookies and punch.
This will be followed by the monthly board meeting in which I expect a fight to break out over next season's program, the technical director to request an increase in his budget, and questions for me over why the website does not contain any pictures of this or that particular person.
Just another Sunday......

I may take some photos which will not be as entertaining as those posted by DR TCB yesterday, but may be of some interest.

Good morning, all! An emergency trek to Toyland has just been averted and I am delighted. I hope to get as close to completion of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA Act Two as I can. I want to spend tomorrow typing up my notes and delivering it on Tuesday.
My first priority this morning is to answer for the copyists a list of questions on the opening number of LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40, the project currently occupying my time with Loesser and Babes in Toyland.
Yes, DR JRand1958, please post the photos!

DR ARNOLD BROCKMAN
Thank you for singer from The Happy End.
I am not interested in seeing the film, but I am in what seems my never ending search to find recordings of Academy Award nominees & winners for Best Song and sung by the artist who did it in the film
I did my usually google searches but nothing came up, but when I plugged in Michael Dees name: VOILA!!
I even found a recording I was able to download
One more down, a lot more to go.

Good morning!
Looks to be a beautiful albeit hot day here today with more temps in the upper 80s and summer clearly on the way. I haven't had to resort to turning on the central air yet. Floor fans and the attic fan have kept things very comfortable, but once the evenings start to stay in the 70s, the central air will have to come on.
-
I will be spending almost the entire afternoon with THE CLEANER's final four episodes and bonus features. I'm hoping I can squeeze all four in this afternoon and get the review up (it's basically written except for writing up the bonus features on disc four which I haven't seen yet). Glancing at the plots for the last four episodes makes them sound really interesting, so I'm looking forward to them.
-
Tomorrow it will be back to Blu-ray for a day with the upcoming release of FATAL ATTRACTION. I haven't seen this film in years, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it.
Then I'll have the PERRY MASON fourth season, volume one set to dive into followed by Criterion's June releases which I now have all in hand.
And I'm expecting seasons one and two of LOST on Blu-ray to arrive this week. Should be fun going back all those seasons and rewatching the story from the very beginning in the absolute best quality possible. Seasons 3 & 4 on Blu-ray were jaw-dropping in their video splendor.
-
Good morning! It is a beautiful day in the Northwest. It is supposed to be in the 80s again today, which means the street in front of my house will be a virtual parking lot from 11:00 a.m. forward. Oh well, the price for living in one of the most beautiful areas of the city.
I am off to an early brunch (to beat the crowds of heathens). I will probably leave in the next half hour or so.

DR George,
I haven't checked the recording of PUSHING DAISIES from last night, but I will at some point today. I won't watch it while I eat lunch because I want to edit out commercials for your copy as I watch it, and I don't want to have to balance a fork with a remote! :)
-
I saw the movie bk wrote about in the notes (Connery-Snipes; the name escapes me at the moment) at the theater when it was first released, and I have the DVD, too (I think I bought it used for a few dollars). I remember the big reveal of the bad guy wasn't that much of a surprise, but that it still had genuine moments of excitement, and I rather liked it. Don't think I'll upgrade to Blu-ray though. If I can't even remember the movie's name, it must not be high on my list of priorities.

Busy day today--with Betsy still visiting family back in Wisconsin, I am multi-tasking. Kids must come with me to my church gig this morning, then, depending on which child is moody by then ;), either one or both of them will be dropped off at a friend's house, who will take them to the final Shabbaton at their Sunday School. Then I have to head off to a big retirement community where I'm directing the Pacific Pops in a performance.

Last night, when I packed up the Loesser for the night, I watched the season finale for THE TUDORS. Much as I like a lot of this series, and much as I was happy to hear it wll continue next season, I think very much that it's time the idiot producers stop trying to recreate softcore Cinemax At Night and start ageing the characters.
At some point Henry has to gain the avoirdupois which began with his leg keeping him from being so athletic. I really doubt the latest wife-to-be and he were cavorting so much in the nude for two reasons: he was becoming a fat pig and she was a teen-age idiot with a large libido who was too busy playing around with boys her own age, much as the men around her were setting her up to be queen.
And, I wonder, why is Ane of Cleves so pretty? Supposedly the Holbein made her look better than she was, so she must have been a dog who smelled really badly because Henry reported she smelled terrible and was so awful he couldn't consummate the marriage. We're talking about a historic period where no one washed for years! I doubt the word hygiene, the lack of which is why so may died in childbirth, was even a real word at that time. If Anne of Cleves stank and looked bad, you'd never know it from the series.

My criticisms of this season mirror yours preceisely, DR Elmore. Very entertaining but now it seems a few facts are about all that's accurate about the depiction of the latter part of the king's reign.

Moving on...
I, thankfully, had a "reprieve" this morning when my friend, Jerry, called me this morning at 8:30 to inform me that his kid woke up running a fever. In other words, brunch cancelled. Which is OK. And I got to grab an extra hour or two of some much needed sleep. :)
-
Once again, many thanks to Fred and Skip for a wonderful evening last night.
-
And now I think I'm going to head out for brunch on my own... Although, I think I may just stay put here for a bit longer since I think I may head out to Queens this afternoon for the Marriage Equality New York rally... We shall see...
*Oh, I did buy some fresh yogurt at the farmer's market yesterday, and I believe I shall have some of that. Now. :)

I am loving my Wii. Last night I used it for 3 hours (OMG) this morning I did 30 minutes of yoga and 30 minutes of cardio/strength training. I think i finally found a workout I can stick to. It's right here any time i want to use it

Time to eat breakfast and start my day,. I need to do some yard work and prep for some hearings for tomorrow.

OK.. I need to get out of here.

They wish they had a property that size. No, they're building on a tiny lot, which means they have to build sideways or they're going to have a very thin front. Don't know about the long jog today - it's chilly out and even a little drizzly. Of course, I hope the rain waits just one more day if it's coming, as no one is working today next door.

The new Sherlock Holmes -- action hero? Comic bumbler?
Two new films based on the detective are in the works. One pairs Robert Downey Jr. with Jude Law as Watson, the other pairs Sacha Baron and Will Ferrell.
By Scott Timberg
May 31, 2009
He's probably the most adapted literary character in history -- and perhaps the only nonexistent person with an honorary degree from the Royal Society of Chemistry. Upward of 70 actors have portrayed him in more than 200 films, since the early days of silent movies.
But there's not been a major cinematic adaptation of Sherlock Holmes in decades. The classic films of the '30s and '40s, starring Basil Rathbone as Arthur Conan Doyle's immortal detective, shut down the production of Holmes films for years, and the Jeremy Brett-starring series on Britain's Granada Television, broadcast in the '80s and early '90s, has likely intimidated would-be filmmakers as well.
But heading our way are two very different films starring the Victorian detective.
The first, "Sherlock Holmes," stars Robert Downey Jr. as sleuth with Jude Law as sidekick John Watson. Though these are two respected actors, the Warner Bros. film will not be a thesp-fest but an action movie based on a graphic novel by Hollywood executive Lionel Wigram, who spent years trying to get the project taken seriously.
The film has finished shooting -- with most of the exteriors in London, Manchester and Liverpool -- and is scheduled to open Christmas Day. "I didn't want deerstalkers and pipes," Guy Ritchie, the film's director, said of the sleuth's famous hat and favorite hobby. "They're typical iconic images of Holmes, but we're starting from scratch."
The second, still untitled and in preproduction, will go for a comic tone, with "Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen as detective and Will Ferrell as associate. (Etan Cohen, who co-wrote "Tropic Thunder," will write the screenplay, with lad-film demigod Judd Apatow as executive producer.)
...
Holmes without his hat and pipe - that's like Mary Poppins without an umbrella!

I'm back from a loverly walk through Riverside Park down to 72nd Street, then up to 75th on West End, to the Broadway Market at 77th and Broadway, and home. Very delightful. The park is jumping today, and it was a nice way to get out and stretch my legs. I think tomorrow I will walk up Riverside to 102 or so and then down Broadway.
And so, to Frank Loesser for a bit of work.
-
I am enjoying doing nothing but being lazy. I've been listening to music, but will now go to Gelson's, get some food (or maybe Subway) and then begin watching motion pictures.
-
It is a beautiful day outside but very warm for May (a Jerome Kern reference).
-
I spent almost all of my afternoon finishing up THE CLEANER (no, the series is not about my daily cleaning rituals). I had four episodes to go, and I did get all four watched. They involved four very different people battling addictions: a piano prodigy, an actress, a sorority sister, and a husband and wife working from home drinking all day long.
And, of course, the season ending episode set up a cliffhanger of sorts for Benjamin Bratt's character and his rocky marriage.
-
I also watched all of the bonus features. There were some deleted scenes (4), a gag reel, a 14-minute behind the scenes tour of sets, make-up trailer, dubbing stage, and backlot where the actor in question was learning to ride a motorcycle in order to play a biker on the show.
-
I had a little time left over, so I started watching THE FASHION SHOW. I finally recorded the correct episode! In the mini challenge to start the competition, the teams had to design a new shoe. Frankly, most of the shoes looked more like costume pieces than anything a real person might wear. After the winner was declared on that, I stopped the show and will pick back up with it when I go back down.
-
As for the rest of the evening, I'd like to watch PUSHING DAISIES while I make George's DVD-R of it. I'll likely watch another NCIS episode from season 5. I will probably watch tonight's LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT at 10. So what comes between those shows will be decided once I'm viewing something.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! The thunderstorms that DR JRand mentioned last night arrived here while we were watching Anchors Aweigh on PBS, so we disconnected all the computers and watched the weather coverage. Our sirens went off, but the tornadoes that apparently touched down were south and east of us.
This morning we were off to Lima for Richard's second official Sunday service, followed by coffee hour and a hospital visit. I discovered that there's a Starbuck's in the hospital lobby, so I waited there while Richard visited ICU - with the patient's family members and Richard, I figured that was enough of a crowd.
We are now home waiting for the arrival of Rob and a friend, who will do the heavy-lifting in our furniture rearranging project. Mary Linda is coming, too, but after today's matinee (4th of 4 performances since Friday evening), I suspect she'll just want to veg.
-
Everything seems pretty quiet on the internet this afternoon, as I finished my afternoon surf in record time. I guess I'll head down now to clean my bathroom and then head back into the viewing area for more of this evening's entertainment.

Yes 90210 just finished its first season. YOu can probably check out episodes on the CW website which is something like cwtv.com.
I wouldn't really compare 90210 to the original. The only similarities (which are sort of interesting) is that the new show features some of the original cast members. Jennie Garth (kelly) was on quite a bit. Shannen dougherty (brenda) was on a few episodes. As was Tori spelling (donna). And they featured the Peach Pit.
-
There's nothing on tonight that i will watch. I will probably just watching last night's PUSHING DAISIES.
Although if i got mtv i would watch the red carpet and the Hills. ANd maybe even the movie awards. Although i will watch the first two on mtv.ca tomorrow.

1: 30 - check the yard - can't find a reason for the ruckus
2PM - ruckus continues
2:15 PM - change into long pants, put on along sleeve jacket (tick protection) to go out to investigate.
Scoured the fence perimeter (where buster had been trying to dig a tunnel)
and finall found the source of the canine consternation - two turtles just outside the fence out of paws reach.
I got a box to hold the Beastie's and scooped them up - one fella wouldn't stay put and kept trying to escape while I was climbing through the underbrush to the side yard to set them free.
One turtle scurried away, the other stayed quietly in his shell.

LAST SURVIVOR OF 'UNSINKABLE' TITANIC DIES AT 97
LONDON — Millvina Dean, who as a baby was wrapped in a sack and lowered into a lifeboat in the frigid North Atlantic, died Sunday, having been the last survivor of 1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic.
She was 97 years old, and she died where she had lived — in Southampton, England, the city her family had tried to leave behind when it took the ship's ill-fated maiden voyage, bound for America.
She died in her sleep early Sunday, her friend Gunter Babler told the Associated Press. It was the 98th anniversary of the launch of the ship that was billed as "practically unsinkable."

Thank you for posting the article, derBrucer, I hadn't heard the news. It seems fitting to devote my 16,000 post to Millvina Dean. I met her at the pier in Boston when we returned from the Titanic site. She had declined to sail on the cruise out to the site, but she had hoped to see the piece of the hull when we arrived back. No such luck.
And since it is my big 16,000.........................

EGYPT MAN CASTRATES SELF FOR LOVE, POLICE SAY
CAIRO — A 25-year-old Egyptian man cut off his own penis to spite his family after he was refused permission to marry a girl from a lower class family, police reported Sunday.

This is still not as shocking to me as a Sherlock Holmes without a deerstalker.

I think I will use the choreography from DR MBARNUM's clip in my upcoming production of MAN OF LA MANCHA.
-
It was try on the tights day today - results varied - as might be expected.
-
Who do you suppose drank all that wine before they started to play?? :)
Well, if they're Roman Catholic, the Priest; if Episcopalian, the altar boys.

Do you have appropriate "artifices" to enhance your figure?

Decided to load up the car for Out of the Closet. Will have to make 2 maybe 3 trips this week. They should have made/will make at least several thousand dollars with all the stuff I've taken over since starting the packing/moving last November.
Also listened to That Man From Rio and Anya and Scent of Mystery.

Gotta go. Laundry is calling.
-
Rob, Mary Linda, and their friend John just left after moving several pieces of furniture for us. Richard supervised and I followed them around with the vacuum cleaner. Now, if we can just find a couple of pieces (2 chairs, or a chair and a loveseat) to go with the couch we inherited from my mother-in-law, we'll have a whole new "look" in the living room.

Why?

I don't want to go back to work tomorrow!
I wish I had a job I didn't want to go to! :-\
You can have my job, but only if I get your husband!
-
Hello all - sorry to have been so e E & T - I have been back at work full time and indeed several days I have been working overtime - When I get home I eat dinner and fall asleep
-
Glory be, we might get to Page 5 yet!

The Vixter says HELLO!! and that she misses you all!

Hello all - sorry to have been so e E & T - I have been back at work full time and indeed several days I have been working overtime - When I get home I eat dinner and fall asleep
Glad to know that you are okay. I have been worried. And Francois was asking about you yesterday.
-
The Vixter says HELLO!! and that she misses you all!
The Vixter certainly deserves a nomination as "Daughter of the Year."
-
Fridat and Saturday the Vixter was in Pennsylvania with her school chorus. They performed in a competiton and took four prizes (although the Vixter was apparently so umimpressed with the prizes that she could not tell me what they were)
After the competition they went swimming in the hotel pool and then had a dance party with DJ in one of the hotel ballrooms - Saturday they spent at Hershey Park
A wonderful time was had by all
-
You can have my job, but only if I get your husband!
Give me a minute....
...I'm thinking! ;)

Sorry - it has just been so very busy at work and my boss and co-workers had been so good about all the time I was off that I simply feel that I have to be there now when they are all working 12 - 14 hour days (I am not staying quite that long I can only manage 10 -11 hours)
but then when I get home I am just too tired to do anything
-
We saw the lovely staged reading of THE GRAND TOUR at the York, starring Jason Graae, Nancy Anderson and James Barbour.
-
Today on the way home from church I passed a garage sale and having three dollars burning a hole in my pocket I decided to stop
I am now the proud owner of Laurie Beechman's "No One is Alone" CD produced by our very own BK
I listened to it as soon as I got home - it is wonderful!

I must agree!

Since it was a gloroius day out I spent the afternoon in the yard. I planted one and half flats of impatiens and dug up , divided and transplanted two large hostas

Then I brought the Vixter to our church so she could practice for this Friday night's performance at our annual WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) dinner
When I came to pick her up I saw the last half of her rehearsal singing Taylor the Latte Boy
She was really funny - they were trying to get one of the boys in the church to sing the response song but none of them felt confident enough to do it

When was this?

I am going to try and catch up on a the past few days - I especially want to see TCB's photos!
-
Hi, DR Vixmom! Tell The Vixter that we miss her, too - I hope she has some time to spend with us here when school's out for the summer.
-
I was wondering why I feel so tired - well, it is 10pm, after all, and I've been up since 5:30am. It's been a full day and I think it's time to crash.
'night!

-
TCB - I loved the photos from yesterday!
-
Cilla congratulations on your new car!!
-
George congratulations on your new plateau!
-
BK - I sympathize with your construction woes - here we are suffering with the annual motorcycle morons -
They wait until about 1 AM and then spend the next two hours racing up and down the street in front of my house - my neighbor across the street admitted having thoughts at 2 AM of stringing a 100 lb test line fishing line from his telephone pole to ours - it was much more creative and effective than my thought of throwing rocks at them as they drove past
Ubfortunaltey as we are both rational human beings we will continue to endure being woken in the wee hours by these inconsiderate morons
-
Good Evening!
I (STILL) LOVE NEW YORK!
-
-Walk around the Central Park Reservoir for the first time in a long time - CHECK!
It was another beautiful, sunny and warm day here in NYC as DR Ben mentioned earlier. And I did indeed head down to Central Park to take a walk around the Reservoir. It was just what I needed. It's always nice to BREATHE again.

Isn't drag racing illegal? Have you called the police? Or do the morons manage to clear out when they see and/or hear the cop cars coming down the road?

DR vixmom - Just be sure to take a few seconds throughout each day at work to close your eyes and relax. A little de-stressing throughout the day is a very good thing.

The Removal Of A Penis Is Not Castration - that's the title of my next novel.

I've fallen asleep three times already. And I'm still logey and tired. Ah, well, I'll be up bright and early and jogging and that should perk me right up.
-
-Walk across the Park to the East Side to see where all the noise was coming from - CHECK!
And once I got to the East Meadow, I found myself in the middle of the Japan Day celebration. I had always wanted to attend Japan Day, and, of course, the one year that I didn't see any ads for it, I just happen to stumble upon it by chance.
They had a big stage set up, and different performers were scheduled throughout the day. Around the perimeter, they had different booths set up featuring a different aspect of culture, everything from origami to harajuku, to basket weaving, to kimono folding. And, of course, they also had food...
Now this was the most interesting part of the celebration to me - and not for the reason you may be thinking right now. They had different stations set up serving different foods: miso soup, udon noodles, teriyaki, sushi, etc. Each station had their own line, and there was a volunteer holding up a sign indicating where the the end of each line was. I really wasn't hungry at the time, and the lines were quite long, but I noticed that no one was handing any money over to the servers. So, I asked one of the line volunteers where to buy a wristband or food tickets: "All the food is free." WOW!! There were a LOT of people, and there was a LOT of food being served.
Domo arigato gozaimasu.

I guess in a way thought could be the companion piece to "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing".

Thwy do clear out when the cops show up - we do not know where tehy come from but we figure they must be local - what we really need is a cop to stake out the area to catch them in the act but it simply isn't an important enough issue to use the manpower -

I love the movie MIDNIGHT.....although it doesn't quite....QUITE.....reach the delirious heights of PALM BEACH STORY.....only one other comedy of its type from the 1930's always makes me laugh - in the right spots....and that is DESIRE with Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich.
Of course having Mary Astor always helps...love her lines/delivery/reactions in PALM BEACH STORY - "Buy that hat, dear, it makes you look as if you have a chin......"
I LOVE DESIRE! And I've not seen it in years! Is it out on DVD?
Another great line from PALM BEACH STORY, delivered by Mary Astor: "I grow on people, like moss."
MIDNIGHT has one of my favourite movie lines, I've quoted here before, delibered by Rex O'Malley: "I used to swallow things as a child. My mother never left me alone in the room with an arm chair." It also has one of Barrymore's last good performances.
-
Well it is late and I am sleepy and tomorrow is coming fast - good night all!! I wisgh you a;ll a tomorrow filled with glorious things!!

This is still not as shocking to me as a Sherlock Holmes without a deerstalker.
Well, I guess it would depend on the circumstances. Basil Rathbone didn't wear a deerstalker in any of the twelve modernized Universal films, and they worked just fine.

I began my evening of entertainment watching the rest of THE FASHION SHOW. I agreed completely with the winner, but I certainly didn't agree on the loser this week. A very irritating choice.

Then, to clear off some room on the DVR, I got Adam Lambert's last three IDOL show performnaces duped and those episodes erased. That cleared off about 14% of what had been taking up valuable DVR real estate.
-
Next, I watched and duped last night's PUSHING DAISIES. Kristin Chenoweth got to sing a bit, and the mystery was fairly involving.

Then I picked out of the Warner Archive stack of discs THEY ONLY KILL THEIR MASTERS. True, it's not a very good movie, but it has all those wonderful old MGM stars making a film on the old backlot, so I enjoyed seeing it again.
Disc had decent color (maybe a bit dated), only a few white specks, and was anamorphic, so I was pleased with the condition of the print they used for the transfer.

-Walk down Madison Avenue from 96th Street to 59th - CHECK!
It was another great walk. It turned out that the "Salute To Israel" Parade was today also. So, coupled with the Japan Day Celebration in Central Park, Madison Avenue had quite a lot of foot traffic.
*And since there is a surprising dearth of Starbucks on the UES, any café or restaurant that had a bathroom was also busy. ;)

We saw the lovely staged reading of THE GRAND TOUR at the York, starring Jason Graae, Nancy Anderson and James Barbour.
I almost headed over to The York once I was down in that neighborhood, but I needed to get off of my feet for a bit - and get some caffeine in my system, so I stopped into the ING Direct Café (http://home.ingdirect.com/about/about.asp?s=INGDIRECTCafe).
It's an interesting concept: part coffee shop, part banking center, part internet café, and part running and biking accessories store(!). They even have a special Orange (of course) ING Direct hybrid bicycle for sale!
However, the best thing about it is that they serve Peet's Coffee! And for only $2.00 a cup! In fact, all of their basic coffee drinks are priced at $2.00, and if you want a cappuccino or a macchiato those will run you $3.00. And if you happen to have an ING account or an ING mug, then you either get your coffee for free or for a buck!
I took a seat upstairs where there are some comfy couches and bar stools, and while I rested my feet, I was also able to recharge my iPhone too - lots of plugs!
Once the caffeine kicked in, I then headed up to 59th and Lexington where I hopped on the N Train to head into Astoria for tonight's Marriage Equality (http://www.meny.us/) New York rally in Athens Square Park...

Gee, I guess the glory days of people traveling to come see one of their own's show is done - I remember what fun we all had coming to PennyO's show. Oh, well, we'll survive and have fun with those who do show up.
bk - For many DRs, a few hours drive - or a subway ride - is much, much cheaper than a flight out to L.A.
And, yes, there just happened to be more than a few DRs who came to see DR PennyO's show. Keep in mind, however, that many of those DRs just happened to already have something going in NYC that weekend already. -And I was playing for Penny, so...
Plus, the Nudie readings are taking place on a Monday and a Tuesday - which, for many DRs are work days - or-looking-for-work days (myself included).
I'm sure if things were more "aligned", you'd have a nice showing of DRs at the reading. Is DR Pogue coming out to see the reading? Will DR Jolie Femme happen to be back in LA in two weeks?
In the meantime, just think of the turnout you'll have when you bring Nudie to New York City.
And stop being so curmudgeonly about it. ;)
-
BK - I think it REALLY is about the economy right now.
-
*I do wonder what the breakdown is of DRs east and west of the Mississippi... Hmm...
-
*And I have to say that I was surprised - and still am - at how many DRs joined me for the First HHW Walking and Eating and Walking and Eating Tour. We had 17 people over the course of the day! And, again, that was just a case of things aligning properly.
But even if I had had only one DR joining me on that gastro-tour, I still would have been flattered and thankful for their company and "trust" that day.
-
BK - I think it REALLY is about the economy right now.
That too!

Well, I did happen to take a picture today...

Today, I again went to my sister's house but this time, the professional movers were there to actually move the boxes and large items (shelves, beds, cabinets, tables, etc.) from her soon-to-be former house to her new house. It was a long day (I had to reassemble my sister's bed), but I must admit that the moving guys were very nice to look at ;) And they were just very nice...very friendly and personable. :D I also went to rehearsal for an hour, then went back to my sister's to help put together my niece's bed. I'm now at home watching "Gattaca" on hi-def On Demand.
-
DR George,
I haven't checked the recording of PUSHING DAISIES from last night, but I will at some point today. I won't watch it while I eat lunch because I want to edit out commercials for your copy as I watch it, and I don't want to have to balance a fork with a remote! :)

UNDERPANTS!
Congrats on Your 16,000+ TCB!! ;D
