Well, you've read the notes, the notes were lazy and yet went to town, and now it is time for you to post until the lazy cows come home.

Good morning, all! June is, thank God, not yet busting out all over, but this year of 2009 seems to be galloping along while at the same time I'm thinking, this has been the longest six months I've ever endured. I don't know what any of it means.

Today I will finish up Act Two and begin the long task of writing up the notes. As soon as they're done, which will be tomorrow, I will cart the score down to MTI, come back and make the Moross score fixes and mail it off to the rental agency in New Jersey. Then it's back to (hopefully) the final round of BABES IN TOYLAND for the nonce. This isn't my day, it's probably my week until Thursday when I have another round of the McGlinnventory.  Today, I have a few errands as well: pharmacy and bank.

TOD: Romance? Never happened.

Yes, Druxy, I believe you're correct about Mark Heilpern ( I think that was his name) who starred in Zabriskie Point.  But even that-after-the-fact tragedy still  cannot make the travesty of the movie go down any better.  I remember sitting in the theatre watching this in disbelief at how pointless, pretentious, and mind-numbingly stupid the movie was.  And the two main actors couldn't act.  It made the fifty worst films of all time book.  If BK had told me he was going to watch it, I'd have tried hard to dissuade.  Even Blu-ray can't help that movie. It's two hours of my life I'd like back.

Good morning!

The first of June (NO WAY!), and the summer appears to be here a few weeks early. We're going to be near 90 or over this week and no rain in the forecast until Thursday. I have a feeling the AC will be turned on at some point in the next few days.

Well, bk beat me to FATAL ATTRACTION by a day since that will be my work project for the day. I think it's a great thriller, but I haven't seen it in years, so I'll look forward to this revisit this afternoon. I think Glenn CLose's work is absolutely brilliant. From her first glimpse in the movie, you know she's mentally off. I don't quite know HOW she achieved that effect with her eyes being rather glassy and hungry, but she freaked me out from the get-go. I would have given her the Oscar over Cher in MOONSTRUCK, too.

Most romantic moment:

My first partner and I met at a Christmas dinner (actually a week or so before Christmas) given by a mutual friend of ours at the time. We knew each other casually but had never had occasion to really sit and talk with one another. I do remember as we talked, I just sort of fell into his eyes and got mesmerized. We ate together (it was a buffet), we slow danced, and suffice to say we went home together. I was completely swept off my feet.

I saw that about Susan Boyle. Honestly, her performance of "Memory" made me think she was truly a one-trick pony. Yes, she was nervous, but even after she calmed down, the song didn't seem ideally suited for her voice. "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" might have been a better ALW choice for her.

No, DR CP - Gary Cooper in DESIRE is only available on VHS or a Region Two DVD at the present.  I was most disappointed that it was not included in the Gary Cooper Box Set from a few years ago, or even the Marlene Dietrich BOX!

Something to look forward to.

I keep looking at the clearance SAMSUNG Blu RAY player for $198.....I may go tomorrow and get it if it is still there.....on line specs say that it will play DVD-R, but I am afraid......

I very much enjoyed the Ron Raines MAN OF LA MANCHA cd - very nice to have the whole show on CD....I also liked Kim Criswell as Aldonza, too.

I have noticed on the original BC CD and on this one, The Quest is shorter than the  version that Brian Stokes Mitchell did on the revival cast album.  The choral book part I have now has the shorter version....but can there be TOO much Quest?  I am seriously considering doing it as it was done in the revival.   hMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMm

Well... Stokes wanted a key change.  For better or worse.  So...

I didn't mind it when I saw the show, but it did sort of pull me out of the show for a bit.  It became more of a vocal showcase than a "quest".

And he backphrased, which makes the "look at me, I'm not a great baritone but folks think I'm a star" all the worse!

DR JRand58, the materials from Tams-Witmark reflect the original show. I dount they'll redo the edition simply because the star wanted to milk the moment when it's worked for 40 years without his aid.

Fascinating about why people aren't seeing Up, whereas lots of people here were first in line for other Pixar films.  It was the same with Wall*E.  I'm anxious for reports.  Also more fascinating that no one here seems to have ever had a romantic evening.  You know, special person, special meal, dancing - you've seen movies, I'm sure, so I'm equally sure you know exactly what I'm talking about.

We don't go out to see movies in theatres any more.  The last few attempts were ruined by rude, inconsiderate, obnoxious members of the public at large.  So we simply wait and view films we want to see at home.

The same could be said of live theatre, but in that instance there is no alternative or replacement for the electric connection between live performers and an audience.

First, Pixar has yet to make a film about penguins.

Happy Feet was made by Kennedy Miller Productions, same group that was behind Babe.

Surfs Up was by Sony Pictures Animation.

Madagascar (where a team of four penguins were supporting characters) was by DreamWorks Animation, the guys behind the Shrek films.

The closest Pixar has come in making a film including penguins was Wheezy, a single broken penguin squeeze toy in Toy Story 2.  The film was not about Wheezy.

Second, Pixar, for the most part, makes films about communities, and how individuals relate to the communities they live in.

This breaks from the Disney tradition, where the animated features tend to be about broken families trying to repair themselves.  (Broadly speaking, of course.)

Toy Story was about a community leader reacting (badly) when a charismatic outsider joins the community.

A Bug's Life was about three communities: a farming community terrorized by a criminal gang, rescued by a roving band who help the farmers learn self-reliance.  (Think The Magnificent Seven with additional legs and wings.)

Monsters, Inc. was about mid-level leaders of a community discovering and reacting to it's corrupt leadership.

Toy Story 2 - about loyalty, and the re-discovery of self-worth and heritage (it's villian rejecting same).

Finding Nemo - a father searches for his son, and in the process encounters several different communities and discovers how his own place in the world has value.

The Incredibles - about what happens to a family when the community it was a part of has been dispersed and destroyed.

Cars reverses the Toy Story tale, and focuses instead on the charismatic outsider learning to relate to his new-found community.

Ratatouille - again, the charismatic outsider, this time learning how to become a leader in a community of chefs.

Wall-E - hell, it's about an entire species that has lost it's way, and has to learn how to become a community in order to find it's way again.

These films are not identical.  They are telling variations on a theme, the theme of the individual's place within a community, but there has been a wide variety of stories to tell within that theme.

Up should be interesting, as it does not tell of a community (unless you count as it's focus a pack of dogs, which from everything I've read is not the story's focus).  As such, it makes for a departure for Pixar.

These, by the way, are not children's movies.  Their themes go beyond that of the simple "cartoon."  They are thus movies that anyone, from any age group, can enjoy, suitable for the entire family, and capable of engaging everyone within the family at their own level.

Too bad so many filmmakers have forgotten how to make such films.

The alternative der B and I have found is to go to weekday matinees - easier for us to schedule, since my weekends tend to fall on weekdays; cheaper (matinee prices, don't'cha know), and the denizens of Rehoboth tend to be more polite as a rule anyway.

I try to avoid taking der B's grandlads, since they can only go during regulation weekends, and the crowds do tend to be ruder when they are around.  Wait, that's just the older grandlad I'm referring to.  The crowds around us remain perfectly nice.

Fascinating about why people aren't seeing Up, whereas lots of people here were first in line for other Pixar films.  It was the same with Wall*E.  I'm anxious for reports.

I would LOVE to see "Up," but between rehearsals and helping with my sister's move, I have very little time. :P

I have a model 1500 Samsung Blu-ray player that plays DVD-Rs just fine.

I am not interested in PIXAR films - the stories are all the same.....sometimes it's bugs, sometimes it's toys, sometimes it's penguins, sometimes it's robots.....but it's the same damn movie over and over.

Boy, do we EVER disagree about that, but you certainly are entitled to your opinion.

Message boards say that SOME Blu Ray players takes 5 minutes to load a disk....and does the software on players have to be updated regularly in order to play the latest disks?

Yes, and yes.  I have had three BD players thus far, and by far the best is the PS3.  Virtually instantaneous loads, and automatic firmware updates (if you have Wi-Fi).

I have two Blu-ray players, but I use the PS3 for all of my review Blu-rays. It has yet to have a single compatibility issue with any disc, and the number of adjustments which can be made in set-up are just astounding.

I did watched FATAL ATTRACTION on Blu-ray this afternoon. I had forgotten several suspense scenes (the daughter taken from school and the frantic search for her resulting in an accident, for example). It's a grand thriller and seems utterly plausible when dealing with unbalanced individuals.

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong on this, but:

Wasn't the young leading man of Zabriskie Point later convicted of armed robbery and, subsequently, murdered in prison?

His name was Mark Frechette.

The girl's name was Daria Halprin (or something like that).

Quite right.  There's part of the problem.  Not only couldn't they act;  no one could remember their names.

I don't believe they ever determined the exact cause of the death of Mark Frechette.  Some of his friends and family called it murder, and others thought it might have been suicide.    Anyway, he was found dead in the gym at the prison with a 150 lb. barbell crushing his windpipe.

Page four, huh?  This is the way to start off June, huh?  I should think a frenzy or two would be in order otherwise we'll achieve a brand new low for this board.  But having watched attendance fall of this board with a lot of errant and truant people, well, shall we blame it on the economy?  Facebook (I do suspect that Facebook is part of it - I've discussed this with other message board proprietors), or maybe just lack of interest after all these years.  If it's the latter, it's an easy problem to remedy, oh, yes, it's an easy problem to remedy.  I still find it rather fascinating that not one person has spoken of a memorable romantic evening - I think everyone went right where I said not to go - sex.  I'm talking about a perfect romantic dinner, or a dance, or a walk on the beach.  I'm sure each and every one of us has had that kind of experience and yet here we are on page four.  It's an easy problem to remedy, however, oh, yes, it's an easy problem to remedy.  And for all those who were looking for new topics, only ONE person has actually bothered to e-mail me a list of proposed topics - several of which, unfortunately, we've done more than once.

Der B decided that, since no one has yet reported on UP, we should see that today.

So we did.

He's less enthusiastic about the film than I am.  He simply didn't find it engaging.  What he did find it was slow, particularly in the beginning.  And it is.  It's about an octogenarian, fer cryin' out loud!  He's also guaranteeing that too many little kids are going to be asking their parents questions, about a shot of Carl and Ellie at the doctor's office.  I think he's overly worried.

Once the house takes flight, however, the film does as well.  There are insurmountable obsticles to be surmounted, improbable friendships to be probabled, and...

AND THERE'S NO COMMUNITY TO DEAL WITH!

IN A PIXAR FILM!

It's about Carl and Russell, the young stowaway, out in the wilds of Venezuela.  No civilization, just Carl, Russell, a strange bird named Kevin, an equally strange dog named Dug, and an explorer even older than Carl who is out to prove he isn't a fraud.

It is wildly improbable, and what everyone does (and is able to do) is wildly improbable, but it still grabbed me and choked me up in places.  And it's those places that choked me up that made it all worthwhile.

Is it as good as...?

Wait a second, why play the "such-and-such was better" game.  I liked the film for what it was, a chance to go on an adventure.

Beyond that, more of the crew will have to see the film before I can say more.  I think I've kept the spoilers to a minimum, no more than has already been in print elsewhere (and hopefully less).

The most romantic evening of my life was also the most painful.  The great love of my life was a married man.  Sorry, I am not proud of that part, but it is true.  He and his wife had a son, and my lover told me from the beginning that he would never leave his wife as long as his son was still in the home.  He also told me that the only person he ever said "I love you" was to his son; not to his wife and never to me.  One beautiful romantic evening after we had been together for two years, he took me in his arms and said, "I love you, Tom".

It was the happiest moment of my life, but I think I knew the moment that he said the words, that it was the beginning of the end for us.  He started being a little more distant to me, finding reasons not to be able to come over.  He was the vice president of a very large bank in Seattle.  One evening he came over and told me that he had quit his job, and that he and his wife and his son were moving out of Seattle and settling near the coast so that he could help his dad run his business.  I never saw him again

BK, romance is not very easy to discuss.  There's something ineffable about it, that putting into words somehow doesn't convey what was there, and usually makes the whole romance seem, well, silly.

Take, for instance, Sunday In the Park With George.  That show has been a touchstone for der B and myself through the twenty-four years we've been together.  Listening to the score together.  Watching the filmed performances by Peters and Patinkin together.  Going to see it at the Long Beach Civic Light Opera (and taking the bus downtown, because the car wasn't working, and then taking the bus back only to discover the driver was only going part of the way before quitting and having to walk the rest of the way home).  Going to see the actual painting on our first visit to Chicago.

For that matter, going to museums together, which we've done a lot.

It isn't what took place, really, it was the "together" that held the romance.

OK, spoiler time, about UP.  Sorry, have to do it.

Ready?  When you go to see UP, Russell has something to say about the boring things.  That's all I'm gonna tell ya.  It'll make sense.  Really.

You can return to your computers now.

TOD - It was a Friday evening at the end of a very long workweek for both Richard and myself, almost 29 years ago.  We'd been dating, officially, for almost 2 years and had known each other for more than 7.  He came to my apartment for dinner and I'd spattered the front of my sweats with beef stew.  In the course of the after-dinner conversation, he proposed.  No violins, no Eiffel Tower, but still the most romantic evening of my life.

And a total surprise!

Also more fascinating that no one here seems to have ever had a romantic evening.  You know, special person, special meal, dancing - you've seen movies, I'm sure, so I'm equally sure you know exactly what I'm talking about.

I've never had what could be called a "romantic" evening.  I've certainly gone on dates and enjoyed the evenings, but I've never gone dancing or to a "special" restaurant on a date.  I also like what Woody wrote, "It isn't what took place, really, it was the "together" that held the romance."  When "romantic" dates are shown on TV shows or in the movies, it all just seems so artificial (to me).  I don't think you can really create romance, it just happens...and can happen anywhere and at any time because you're with the person you want to be with. :)

But I did guide my friend, Allen, through the streets of Chinatown for a few hours. Mini-custard buns, banh mi, fresh sugar cane juice, still warm dou hua (fresh tofu pudding) drizzled with ginger syrup, pork and chive dumplings (five for $1)...  And we even looped up to Houston Street to stop into Russ & Daughters where the kind gentleman behind the counter offered us a sample of their "Pastrami Salmon" - Like buttah!

The torso may be modeled after Daniel Craig, but Mr Craig is far better looking than that!

In the planning stages - making muffins.

Alton Brown's recomendations about muffin storage in I'm Just Here for More Food (his book on baking) strike me as about right:

"Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to a week or until they taste gross, smell bad, or grow fur."

I wonder if DR Jane will be rejoining us soon. Her house must be very clean indeed by now.

Speaking of muffins, I had some "brownie muffins" recently. They were goooood! Not surprisingly, more brownie than muffin. It was at an eatery that BK doesn't like.

Is DR JoseSPiano perhaps taking Prince Harry on a foodie walking tour in NYC tonight?

I doubt that is what DR Jose would have in mind.   ::)

DR MBarnum and others - If you get the Travel Channel, you may want to check out Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" program tonight (or one of the rebroadcasts). Tonight's episode covers a visit to Mumbai.

You're welcome, Michael.  -I'm watching it now, and I think you'll find it quite informative and "real" (for lack of a better word at this point).

When I went downstairs, I was in a Blu-ray mood, so I put in THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD. I'm not sure I had ever seen this in the proper aspect ratio before (1.66:1). Of course, due to the nature of the filming, video quality is all over the map, but what looks good looks REALLY good, almost three dimensional with sensational color. It was a very entertaining 90 minutes.

After that was over, I started watching a couple of NCIS episodes from the season 5 box set. The first was an episode with a marine who was about to commit suicide by jumping from a building. Gibbs got him to change his mind and then he was promptly shot by a sniper from a building across the street. I had NO idea who the murderer was (and I've seen the episode a couple of times), so the revelation was a lot of fun.

The second one had to do with the team being airlifted to a freighter called the CHIMERA, and when they arrive, they find it to be a ghost ship with one dead body in the freezer. This was one of THE most exciting episodes from last season, and it was a real pleasure watching it again.

I had time to skim through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The boys weren't on, but Lily, Holden, and Damien were. Nothing in the previews.

And then I watched MEDIUM. Definitely Patricia Arquette's Emmy submission episode, a very involving and rather graphic and grisly episode with a REAL cliffhanger.

And what if CBS hadn't picked up MEDIUM for next season. THAT would have been the series finale! I would have wanted to storm Rockefeller Center!

For romance like in the movies.   I'll go with Hawaii, a white ruffled shirt, the clean air and warm rain at midnight, a convertable, a moonlight drive around the island, being 18 and hundreds of miles from home.

As for romantic evenings or days or hours or minutes - wasn't really looking for anything tell-all (although I thought TCB's story was very touching), just for mood things.  I have had several wonderful dinners that were magical - some out, some at home.  I've walked along the beach with someone very special and the whole thing was very special.  As a teenager, I had several lovely outings, including some I wrote about in the Kritzer books.

I was at my sister's for a couple of hours, and I basically just moved some heavy boxes around and helped move my sister's bed a few inches. ::) And I moved some shelves.  And I moved some boxes from her old house to her new house.  And then we ate.  I had left-over pepperoni/pineapple pizza from yesterday...it was still very good. :D

And then I came home and watched some TV, including "Medium."  It's "TO BE CONTINUED"!
