Well, you've read the notes, you had some Danish whilst reading the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the Danish cows come home.

As I was trying to say....

And since "today" is still open...

So, as I walked up from 86th Street to 145th Street...

I had that "almost mugging" thing.

I stopped into Tropical for a media noche - since it was the "media" of the "noche".

I also made a stop at the Tacos Express truck since they had "agua frescas de sandia" tonight.  Fresh Watermelon Juice!  ¡Muy Refrescante!

And then I walked into my apartment, turned on the computer, and....

bk - Breathe

As you said in your Notes - The reading should be first and foremost about the material.  Everything else is more or less window-dressing.  Over the next 48 hours, just relax, and enjoy teaching - and listening! - to the material you've written.  -Even ballets usually start with the music - not the steps.

OH!!

While I was walking around earlier with my friend, Jonathan, we happened to run into a former "Prince Charmin" from one of the Disney Cruise Ships.  -Jonathan works in the DCL offices, and he's my liaison for when I do the onboard workshops.  In any case... As you can see from the picture below, the "prince" truly was and is "charming".

*I just wish I hadn't cut off half of Jonathan's face.

Ah!  Here's a better picture of me and Jonathan:

*Jonathan is also an actor in the Orlando area.  In fact, he was part of the ensemble for the concert version of Sweeney Todd that was recently presented in Orlando that starred Davis Gaines and Faith Prince.

Topic of the Day:  I've never had or been to a real "dinner party."  I've been to potlucks and I've gone to friends' homes for dinner or gone over to watch movies and had dinner, but there was never anything special about the food or the events.  Just any excuse for friends to get together. :)

When I have friends over, I make lasagna that I think is very good.  Basically, what I do is get any recipe from the lasagna noodles package or the ricotta cheese container (and I NEVER use cottage cheese...that's just wrong) and double the amount of everything except the noodles.  Then it turns out right! ;D

OK... I think I'm going to try to get some sleep now.  I hope.  Although, there's something sort of entertaining and enticing about staying up for the next few hours, and then heading down to The High Line to take pictures of it and on it as the sun comes up.  Hmmm...

In any case..

Goodnight.

Oh... Well...

As for the Topic of the Day...

My usual stand-by "Fancy Dinner" is:

Green Salad - usually mesclun with some additional veggies

Roasted Chicken - butter and herbs under the skin, half a lemon inside, and "streaky" bacon covering the breast meat as it roasts

Roasted Veggies - Carrots, Beets, Potatoes, Brussels Sprouts, Squash, Shallots, etc. -whatever is in season - Dressed and seasoned with olive oil, rosemary, salt, pepper, and a dash of red chili flake.

*The chicken and veggies can roast in the oven at the same time at the same temp.

"Confetti" Orzo Salad - That's my starch - Orzo pasta with bits of diced and sauteed red, green, yellow and/or orange peppers.

Brown Sugar Sour Cream Chocolate Pound Cake - glazed with chocolate ganache, and served with either brown-sugared sour cream or cinnamon ice cream.  Fresh strawberries too.

I didn't realize until last night that one must purchase an additional piece of equipment to be able to instantly view/download movies from Netflix, but I happened to go to Amazon.com and saw that they have some free TV episodes that one can download for free and you only have to install their Unbox video player.  I downloaded the complete hi-def pilot episode of "Royal Pains."  I probably won't keep it for very long, since the hi-def version is 3 gigabytes...but you never know.

However, there was a time when I was known for my brunches...

Baked French Toast with Blueberries and Pecans, Warm Maple Syrup on the side, of course

A Quiche of some sort

Oven-Baked Bacon Glazed with Maple Syrup and a dash of Cayenne Pepper

Fresh Fruit with Yogurt

Pitchers of Bloody Mary's

Prosecco and White Peach Nectar for Proper Bellini's

DR George - May I suggest an external, USB-powered external hard drive?  They're surprisingly cheap right now.  Well worth the investment.

And back to the Topic of the Day for a sec...

I do remember duplicating some Moroccan feast that appeared in "Gourmet" a couple of years ago.  That was a great meal.  I have to say, that I got a little weary of the lingering scent of cumin in the air for days(!) after I had cooked that meal.  But, boy, were those lamb short ribs tasty!

You mean another external, USB-powered external hard drive?  I have a 500GB hard drive that only has about 60GB of free space. ::)

I do need another, but I need to get a new skylight first, then get my car serviced, THEN another external hard drive (in that order).

Can you tell that I don't have any credit cards?? ;)

Exciting and interesting evening for DR JOSE - with some drama tossed in for good measure.

Thanks, DR CILLA LIZ!

Yes today will be five hours of consultations, followed by the final performance of KISS ME KATE to a sold out audience, the strike - a party with a talent show (looking at the line up, it seems it will be MANY teenagers doing "special talents", songs from High School Musical, soap operas, and improv.....  It has been my bitter experience that usually the only things in these talent shows that are NOT funny are the comedy sketches.

Dan who plays Fred and I will be recreating our LOVELY moment from A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM....and I might do "New Words" from MR BK's "Unsung Broadway" cd....but appearing on the bill twice MIGHT be overkill.

I think this afternoon I'll work on the new score for Moross' BALLET BALLADS.

The meeting at the office went well yesterday, and side effects of it were a (hopefully) set date, depending on whether our liaison with the Library of Congress follows through, in DC in August to read through the score of LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 and some possible work on Jim Dale's one-man show. I've been a fan since BARNUM, and he's been a delight whenever our paths have crossed in the past 30 years. I would love to do the show.

Busy day for me.

The laundry is in the dryer. I'm about to run the weekly virus scan. I have to get a haircut so the people at the Gates Foundation think I'm presentable. Turns out it's a video conference and the office in Seattle will be looking/listening in as well. I had to make some small, last minute changes to a couple of slides in the presentation.

One of the people I'm traveling with bought my round trip train ticket so I don't have to worry about it. We are taking the Northeast Regional Train. I'm leaving at 7:17 and he's getting on the train in Metro Park, NJ. One of the other two people attending lives in Princeton Junction and will leave from there and our big kahuna boss will already be in DC on Sunday for another meeting and he's just taking the train back to NY. He had his tickets purchased well in advance and is taking the 3pm Acela. Jeff and I will be taking the 3:02 Northeast Regional.

Wednesday, will you ever arrive? I'm not asking for Tuesday because I have another meeting Tuesday morning at 10am for which I need to prepare this weekend. It's a big deal meeting to some people but I only have five minutes and they want a PP presentation of 3 slides!!!

I have to go back to the Laundromat soon to begin folding our dry clothing.

I had some new settings on my home theater equipment I wanted to check out this morning, so I watched another episode of THE CLOSER before coming upstairs to do my workout.

This was the one when Sanchez's brother gets murdered in the street, a really first-rate drama episode for that marvelous actor. Even though I knew everything that was coming, I still had tears in my eyes at the end.

DR Jane - Nothing will happen if you don't register.  From what I understand - and from what I learned last night - it's a bigger issue for Companies and Celebrities - "people" that have "Fan Pages".  This way they can just say look us up on Facebook, and then all one would have to do is type in the company's name after "facebook.com/"

But some people also just want to be consistent from one "venue" to another: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Digg, Tumblr, etc.  This way their real name or their screenname can be used.  For example...

I'm not "JoseSPiano" here on HHW, Facebook and Twitter.

*Oh, and a correction from last night: 200,000 Usernames were registered in the first three MINUTES of the "stampede".  Thatsa lotta names.  -And a lotta people on their computers and iPhones.

**And I do know some people who "lost" their name.  There are a lots of "johnsmith"s out there. And I also know some people who took a username that may have been someone else's name.  -If that makes sense.

DR Jose, today if anyone looks at, wants to borrow, or in anyway shows extra interest in your electronic gadgets --

RUN AWAY! (Holy Grail reference)

... or start SCREAMING!
... or run away screaming
... or kick them in the knee
... or kick them in the groin
... or elbow them in the nose
... or poke them in the eye (that one sounds like a Three Stooges reference)
... or ....

(I'm trying to think of all those tips the personal safety experts recommend when someone accosts you)

Seriously, I'm glad you're safe and still have all of your electronic gadgets -- and Monkey

You're lucky! Usually Cruise Ships have lousy food which is why vacationers all lose weight.

Twenty years ago we took a Princess cruise & the food was amazing, we even purchased the cookbook.  Now if you want the same quality of food you need to eat at one of the 2 restaurants that have a surcharge.  The 2nd night on the ship, all dressed up for the evening, I didn't want to return to the dining room & the Crown Grill looked surprisingly empty & in we went.  We ate at the Italian restaurant for our anniversary & it was equally good.  There was a garlic flan appetizer that was amazing, and the pasta's...I wanted 2nds on those.  I could have skipped the desserts, only because they weren't my cup of tea.  After dessert they delivered an anniversary cake to the table which they kindly delivered to our cabin for consuming later.

Many of the evenings we ate at the buffet which was pretty decent.

I agree.  Jim Dale's performance in BARNUM is one of my favorite memories of Broadway.  (in Barnum.  Hmm, I am sure that is the name of something.)

Did you register your Facebook Username?

I thought we didn’t have to, only if we wanted to.  What happens if we don't, do we lose our current name?

I'm glad you weren't really mugged.

How do I look to see if someone took my name?

Go to http://www.facebook.com/username

You will then be presented with available options, as well as the option to make up another one.

Good morning, all! Today is a hectic day: post office and pharmacy in a few minutes, luncheon with the Cast Recording List at noon. work all afternoon, dinner with my friend Darrel Karl at 6, then home and watch the episodes of BURN NOTICE and ROYAL PAINS I am taping this morning.

I have not had a formal dinner party in years and years -  the last one I had was on  New Years Eve in 1991.  I served  homemade lobster bisque which was to die for ( it was made in my kitchen but by by one of my dinner guests - who was also my matron of honor and is the person who introduced me to Vixdad, so I can't take any credit)  shrimp cocktail, a standing rib roast, oven roasted new potatoes, fingerling carrots in butter sauce, peas with pearl onions and mushrooms and a sherry trifle for dessert

Since we moved to this house we have no room for dinner parties - we had more room in  our apartment!  ( a fact I should have taken more notice of when I was house hunting)

Nowadays I do buffets - usually a baked ham, cold shrimp with cocktail sauce, swedish meatballs or rosy meatballs with egg noodles (the sauce is a combination of cranberry sauce and tomato sauce),and ziti

or else we barbeque!

Ben - question, SHERE RENE SCOTT SPOILER

Did you know in advance about that person being a plant?  I'm usually clued in on such things, but I had no idea he was a plant until it became obvious.  Seems like a very well-kept secret, unlike the plant in the Tommy Tune show a few years back.

Spoiler answer to Fred

Fred,

I didn't know about the plant but since I saw the number of people in the cast and read the bios and saw that one of them had been in 13 and the show was more than half over as soon as he was pulled up I assumed it was a plant. My friend had the same reaction you did.

Those two stories the one about her cousin and the one about being back in Topeka after the magician were so touching and beautiful and moving. And who knew she had a Fred Phelps connection?!

Back from a hard day's work, most of which was spent sitting in a group and giving everyone their new sitting/standing positions.  But it's so much easier now and will look just fine.  We ran a lot of music so everyone's much more comfortable.  We had two cast defections - one gal got a film and dropped out - unbelievable, really - and the most attitude-laden of the ensemble boys dropped out with a one-line e-mail, to which I'll be responding shortly in a rather strong way.  What a jerk.  However, we're fine as the show was originally designed for an ensemble of six not eight and six is what we now have.   There was really good energy in the room today.  And tonight, I have to have a conversation with our leading man, who, I'm afraid, is like a deer in headlights and is really not stepping up to the plate.  The thing is, he's had the script and demo for almost two months now and even though I know he's been working with it, you wouldn't know it from the performance.  He's just very slow, and us having all these set issues and having to redo things hasn't helped him because he's just more confused than ever.  He sings well, he's got a loopy charm, and occasionally he gets it right, in terms of the acting beats.  But too often it's no energy, no idea what he's saying, and NO idea where he's actually supposed to be on the stage and when.

I can't have him drag down the reading, which is what's happening.  Harry sets the energy of the show from his first line, and we're not getting it, so Rosie is getting nothing to play off and her energy flags (and she's got great energy) because she's getting sucked into his hole.  And then he had to leave at two to go to Santa Barbara for a wedding, which means he missed the methodical scene to scene go-through of act one, which means he's even more behind the curve than he was.  Cason read his role today, and even though Cason is completely wrong for the role, we suddenly had energy, he knew what the lines meant, and everything suddenly worked really well.  So, he's studying the role this evening and I'll be having a conversation with our leading man, and if either of don't feel comfortable going ahead, then Cason will do it - it's just a reading and I'd rather have the energy and the acting beats there, frankly.  This is the last time I EVER do anything without getting the cast I want and need.  I simply had no other choice for the lead, which is shocking in and of itself.  I was promised when I took the chance that the performance would be there, but that hasn't proved to be correct.

Enjoy the reverse problem of having to gain weight.  Just like losing it is ok to do it slowly.  Just eat lots of little meals.

It sounds like you are really on the road to good health again. :)  How is your father?

Thanks, DRs Jane and Vixmom - I'll pass your congrats along to Mary Linda!

Yes, DR Vixmom, we'll be in NYC June 28-July 4.  Well, for socializing purposes, June 29-July3, since we get in late Sunday and leave early Saturday.  So far, our plans are to see In the Heights on Monday evening, Blithe Spirit on Tuesday evening, and Hair on Wednesday afternoon.  We're keeping the other evenings open to try to see Twelfth Night in the Park and our days are still open.

I'm heading out for dinner with Mr Karl. Tonight it's a Cuban dinner at Victor's Cafe.

http://www.victorscafe.com/index2.html

DR elmore - My former father-in-law loves Victor's.  He's Cuban, and Victor's was the first place he ate during his first trip to NYC many years ago. -And he took me and my niece there for dinner that last time he was in town.

*I was going to say be sure to tell the waiter that you're catching since they can be a little "relaxed" at times.  -But since you were already heading out the door, you should be fine.

Former father-in-law?

Tell the waiter that youre catching?

He is doing pretty well - he is goingto be starting the radiation process on his leg  shortly - he was there yesterday getting his CAT scan and tattoos!  In his case it is being done as a preventative - they believe they removed all of the tumor but they want to ensure that nothing grows back.

I am so glad that I have already gone through this process and was able to steer  dad to someone who I have 100% confidence will treat my Dad with respect and sympathy and will make sure that the bad cells stay away!

Until I see the doctors and we start setting up appointments for surgery I have no idea what my availability will be like - but if I am able to get in when you have a free moment I will do so
I hope you are able to get tickets to see Twelfth Night. I would love  to take the Vixter to see that.  We have watched a movie version of it a couple of times (the only actors names I can think of at the moment  who were in it are Nigel Hawthorne and Ben Kingsley...) and  and a have also seen a recording of when Helen Hunt was in it some years ago - I have never seen a  live performance of it

Jose will that virtual line still work when the show officially opens?

I'm feeling better today.  I went to the farmers market, organized and disinfected at the office, mowed the yard (a much bigger undertaking than ist sounds) did the grocery shopping, harvested some radishes and lettuce from my garden and made dutch lettuce for dinner.     I am a little tired and other than cleaning up the kitchen will rest tonight

Twelfth Night has a special place in my heart, dating way back to when I took an acting class in college.  Here I was, this aspiring librarian in a class with a lot of theater majors and feeling kind of out of my element.  On the first day of acting class, Mr. Karp Hardy said he'd cast us in our final scenes and, "If I feel I can cast you in Shakespeare, you'll know you've done well in this class."  I was thrilled to be cast as Viola!

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed MIRACLE. Kurt Russell did his usual sterling work (how has this guy never even been nominated for an Oscar; ridiculous!), and the hockey stagings of the classic match were really expert. Most of the guys cast as the players weren't actors at all, but a few did really great jobs (and only one seemed really kind of lost).

Excellent picture and sound.

However, I believe my PS3 bit the dust tonight. The power light is blinking on and off and a quick search of the manual doesn't reveal what that means. I can't make it stop doing that without unplugging it, and it won't take a disc to play, so I'm guessing it's kaput. Thankfully I have a back-up Blu-ray player just for this kind of emergency as I must continue with work projects tomorrow.

Good Evening!

I'm back from The York.  First of all, Thank You, DR FJL.

Secondly, I enjoyed the show, and, strangely enough, I remember seeing a production of High Spirits many years ago in the DC area - I think it was done by one of the "high-end" community theatre companies.  In any case..

Good show, some good performances, and lots of "Oh! Who is that again?" face in the audience. ;)

DR vixmom - Yes, the Public Theater's Virtual Line will be up and running for both shows in the Park this summer, Twelfth Night and The Bacchae.

You can go ahead and register now at:

http://www.publictheater.org

*And with the advent of "smartphones", what some people are doing is signing up for the Virtual Line, and lining up in Central Park too.  Daily registration for the Virtual Line ends at 1:00pm, and the names are randomly chosen shortly after 1:00pm.  You just check back between 1:00pm and 6:00pm to see if you "won" tickets for that evening's performance.  So, if you happen if you happen to have a smartphone - something with an internet browser - you can line up in the Park, then check the Virtual Line right after 1:00pm - which is when the in-person ticket distribution starts.  And if you happen to get tickets via the Virtual Line, you can just step out of line and come back at 6:00 to pick your tickets up, and if you didn't win, you can just stay in line.

Or something like that. ;)

DR TCB - As for the "former father-in-law", I was talking about the father of my brother's now-ex-wife.  Maybe "former father-in-law" is not the correct term.  Well, it isn't.  ;)

As for "catching", well... "... a show".

*I blame myself and the lack of sleep.

And speaking of lack of sleep...

After High Spirits, I went ahead and walked back over to Columbus Circle... And while riding the train back uptown, my body - and my head - started telling me, "Don't stay up all night again. Don't stay up all night again!"

So, I won't.

Goodnight.

Back from the Gardenia - Jan did fine tonight, save for blowing her biggest laugh in the show because she looked at her pianist instead of the audience.  You'd think she'd learn as I've called her on it time and again, but if she doesn't care about losing the laugh then neither do I.
