Today the DH and I are going to participate in a cooking class at a local French restaurant, followed by "an elegant 3-course meal." If it's going to be elegant, I guess we're not eating what we've just cooked. :)

Morning all. I'm back to some semblance of normalcy.
The trip to DC was successful though we won't know for a while if anything comes of our efforts. My train trip went without incident both to DC and back from DC. I do wish I would have had a couple of hours to wander in DC or even an hour to walk around Union Station.
I got back home at 7pm after leaving the house at 6:30am for a 7:15 train. My best intentions were to work on the Tuesday morning presentation but I threw that idea out the window as I sat on the Number 1 train heading to 18th Street. I got home, Anthony put on his shoes and we went back out to the Hollywood Diner on the corner for a light dinner of soup and sandwiches (yes, we could have made those at home but I just spent 12 hours in work mode and we would have needed to wash dishes, etc so I chose the diner).
We then came home, Anthony made a phone call and after that I went to bed.
I got up early and came to the office to put together the 5 minute version of my presentation for the Henry Luce Foundation. It was surprisingly easy. I whittled down a 15 minute presentation to just 4 PowerPoint slides and 4 minutes of notes and then I rehearsed. Spontaneity requires rehearsal, at least for me. I don't have to memorize it but I have to know it so well it feels like it's memorized. The presentation went very well. My upper level boss (my bosses boss) complimented me and I was happy. That took the entire morning. Then after lunch I had a project that needed to be finished "yesterday" which I finally finished at 3:55pm. I leave at 4pm so I just left 5 minutes early.
I now have a host of other projects to finish, all of which are PRIORITY ONE. We shall see which one gets finished first.
That's all for now.
Bye

The Honorable Senator John Ensign: schaudenfreudelicious!! :)
-
Good morning, all! I have to be out of here shortly to pay a visit to my barber. On the way, I hope to do a bit of banking. From there, I'm off to a meeting about Volume 2 of Babes in Toyland, and what work needs to be accomplished on other projects.
Later today, I have a meeting with the ever wonderful Liz Callaway about some charts. I've also got a bit of banking to be done and some work on Jerome Moross' BALLETY BALLADS; I'm currently on "Susanna and the Elders." I'm also a bit concerned that I'm not hearing from my copyist on Moross' GENTLEMEN BE SEATED, his Civil War musical. I've emailed and left messages and I'm getting perturbed.
Time to make the bed and leave.

Wednesday morning greetings! I'm off today to learn about strategic planning with my volunteer administrator friends.
-
DR Jose - congratulations on finding new tenants!
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm really tempted to spend most of today outside. It feels like Fall! ;) -And it's also supposed to rain all day tomorrow, so.. We shall see.
-
The Honorable Senator John Ensign: schaudenfreudelicious!! :)
When I first came across that story yesterday, I first thought it was another military scandal since most of the headlines read, "Ensign Admits To Affair". Ensign? Not even an officer? Why is this making national headlines? And then I read the story... Ohhh...
-
BK, I am sorry that your reading didn't go as you had hoped.
-
HA! Michael Riedel's column (http://www.nypost.com/seven/06172009/entertainment/theater/kutcher_in_the_wry_174656.htm) is a fun read today! Most of it concerns Ashton Kutcher's possible upcoming Broadway debut in Neil LaBute's Fat Pig. One of my favorite lines from today's column:
"While Kutcher has no stage experience to speak of, he does Twitter."
;D

Arnold M. Brockman, yes, got your order. Very noisy workers today.

Thanks for the report, DR FJL!
-
I'm reticent. Oh yes, I'm reticent. But we will have the read thru for MAN OF LA MANCHA tonight. We shall see.
Of course in her acceptance email, one woman added five days of conflicts, which I am NOT happy about.....it caused me to change the rehearsal schedule that was already completed - and kicked one girl out of her first rehearsal after her return from seeing her brother off to war. GRRRRRRRRRRRR
-
Well that was an interesting link, DR SINGDAW. I shall now go back and read DR JOSE's link.
-
Good morning!
It's cool here! Yes, we've had drizzle this morning which has helped make this the most pleasant morning in weeks. I've got the house opened up and am just loving the coolness. How I'm going to hate getting back into the 90s tomorrow!
-
This is a most excellent Reidel column.
-
Is that considered normal to wait until after you're offered the part to reveal conflicts?
-
Lots of rain last night here, as well.
Sorry to hear that the reading was not to MR BK's liking - it is most frustrating when people don't "get it" - just did KISS ME KATE with a bunch of people (mostly high school kids) who didn't get it.....and I am hoping my cast will NOT be the same.
Fingers crossed. Still have not heard back from one dependable guy....so perhaps he doesn't realize he should respond to the email.
-
Is that considered normal to wait until after you're offered the part to reveal conflicts?
Not in one of MY shows. But remember here at PCPH, if you are in the ensemble, you can take a performance night off, if you feel like it.
-
Today I'll be working on LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD, Criterion's release that comes out next Tuesday. I have both the DVD and Blu-ray, and as usual, I'll be reviewing the DVD first. There is a second disc of bonus features, so I'll be on this for a while today.
-
Yes, I'm sorry bk's staged reading didn't give him what he needed to get a firm idea about how to proceed with the show. Several people, as I recall, suggested that maybe it wasn't to be at this time due to the problems. But better luck next time.
-
Page Two Dance!!!
-
The problem with canceling the reading, which I thought about doing several times, is that I'd already paid the theater a large chunk of dough and because they'd turned other shows down it was non-refundable. In hindsight, I should have just eaten that and regrouped but the ball was rolling and sometimes you just don't see clearly enough, even though you should.
-
I almost ordered MARIENBAD, but I think it's too arty for me. I shall look forward to your review!

I am thinking that if I had one of those hand held devices I would be more in love with Twitter. When you just use the computer for instant communication - Facebook fills the bill. I will not say I will NOT ever do Twitter - I follow DR JOSE there - but it is not in my technology vocabulary yet.
-
My question for ASK BK day - what IF ANY - productionl has actually improved when moving from - THE SCREEN to THE STAGE?
The Producers for one. I also think the ultimately Nudie is improved - I got to remove things from the film that never worked and replaced them with things that do. There are still things in the new Nudie material that I need to see performed by capable people and staged - then if they don't work it will be obvious and I can fix them. I think Xanadu was better onstage than on film, the film being completely terrible.
-

I just find it sort of "amazing" that there are still some long(?)-term users of Twitter that still primarily read and tweet via their cellphones, text messages. I can understand how that "option" worked when Twitter was just starting off, but with the exponential growth of Twitter users, that's just too many texts(!!!!!!). The mobile and desktop clients make for a much(!) more streamlined experience.
-
Does Twitter cost money on the Cell Phone? And where does the charge come from?
-
Does Twitter cost money on the Cell Phone? And where does the charge come from?
It only costs money on a cellphone - or even a "smart phone" - if you have a "limited" text messaging plans. You phone company/carrier would charge you for the text - just think of the disclaimer about text votes for "American Idol". But since a good number of people have unlimited text messaging included in their monthly plans, there's no additional expense.

OK - Time to get the rest of my day in gear.

GREAT NEWS DEPARTMENT
Variety Reports that CITY OF ANGELS-The Musical will be A Motion Picture. Barry Levinson To Direct. Marc Shaiman is connected to the project as Musical Director.I have always felt that this would make a Great Movie.
Any Casting Ideas?
-
Very interesting!!!
-
I thought Nudie Musical was terrific last night! I especially liked the performances of Alet Taylor (Mary La Rue) and Lisaun Whittingham (Joy Full). Marlene Martinez and Niki Scalera were great too. In general, I thought the female cast members were better than the males. Ted Detwiler and Russ Hobbie were okay. Michael Irish was okay too, but nothing like Bruce Kimmel was in the role of John Smithee. Irish played it a little too over-the-top, while Bruce was a little more subtle, which made it more funny somehow. I think it's a big credit to Bruce that the funniest part of the show now is the part that deviates from the movie the most. That part is the Moses sequence with the "Burning Bush" song. What I mean is that his latest writing is the best and that sequence definitely got the biggest laughs. I'm not sure why, but the "Touch Me, I'm You" song didn't really work last night - maybe Russ just sang it too slow. But instead of it being funny because it doesn't make any sense, I think it left the audience scratching their heads trying to make sense of it, which they couldn't. I didn't really notice that all the risers and levels were a hindrance at all. There were times that a cast member had to squeeze through people and push them aside, but it went right along with the story as if it was supposed to be that way. The little fashion show during "Perversion" was very funny and a great addition. It was a little disturbing to hear the new melody of "Let Them Eat Cake" just because I know the old melody so well, but I'm sure if I heard this new one a few more times, I would like it just fine.
-
Good Afternoon!
Well... I took care of some sorting and purging, and made some phone calls too. And downloaded the iPhone 3.0 update too. So far, so good.

Ah, you are correct, DR DERBRUCER - I was trying to recall the "ranks" I had to process when I worked at Coast Guard HQ. I spent a summer in Enlisted Personnel Records, and two summers in Officer Personnel Records. And then came the Merchant Marine project...
*But CPO - Chief Petty Officers - are Enlisted Personnel. Now I remember (it well - sort of).

Who's bloody idea was it to transpose the Pirate King number in the Broadway production to the key of B!!!! C worked for many years!
-
Last night's "Nudie" reading may not have been perfect, as Bruce made clear in the notes, but here's the naked truth: It was still loads of fun. Joy Full, even. To see it transition from the big screen, to Bruce's living room, to a NoHo stage has been fascinating. The songs drive it, and they never sputter. They're always tuneful, always fun, always hummable, whether you've heard 'em a lot (like "Let 'Em Cake," "The Lights and the Smiles" from the movie) or just a few times (like "Burning Bush," one of the new songs). And, really, who can resist a dancing dildo — even if that dildo is wearing street clothes?
-
Wait till they do it in A.
-
Who's bloody idea was it to transpose the Pirate King number in the Broadway production to the key of B!!!! C worked for many years!
Probably the same person who decided to transpose "Another Hundred People" down a half-step to the Key of B for the Roundabout Revival (La Chanze). -Which is what the rental materials reflect now.
*And don't get me started on people who bring in "Marry Me A Little" not in B. My fingers "love" playing that song in B!
-
However, I sort of like playing "Another Hundred People" in G. Just sayin'.

When you looked up the name of the actress it told you her surprise identity? I never watched when "P" was on. But I've been sure it was her for a long time now. "D" did not make sense as she has a son, and Victor hates her, and she has been on many private jets (which mary jane said she had not been on). I find Mary Jane so creepy. Kristan Cunningham and Scott Jarrell have employed cool ideas and techniques in their Venice home, expressing their personal style without sinking too much money into a residence they don't own. Some of their affordable tricks, which apply not only to renters but anyone looking for an economical fix:
4. Group books by color.
It's a point some may contest, but Cunningham likes to remove and store paper dust jackets, then create separate clusters of green, blue, yellow and white on the living room wall unit. "I stacked all my red books on the fireplace mantel," she says. "They make a nice detail."

Thanks to Amy and Mark for their comments, which are much appreciated. The biggest casting problem for me, which I alluded to the other day, was our leading man - the fact is, I had no choice at all - there were no other candidates and we ran out of time. I knew it was a problem when I gave him the role but I was assured that since he'd have the script and demo for eight weeks, all would be well. It wasn't. I almost let Cason do it, but in the end, this very talented man was just in over his head and not right for the part. We'll get that right next time. I liked the George better than Amy and Mark, partially because he's the spitting image of the film George, and partially because of his tongue (we have a joke about George's porn nickname - wrote it before meeting Russ, but he's got some tongue, that's all I'll say). And I guess we now know the number I was not going to give away - so mum's the word on it. It really is the biggest improvement on the film - it replaces a scene I never liked and it lands perfectly. And the song does exactly what I wanted it to - it gets squeals of laughter that grow each time a new and unexpected rhyme comes in. We had four teenage girls there Monday night who were literally screaming with laughter at each new verse.
-
I now have short hair again.
-
Took some trade stuff into Amoeba and now have ten more Blu-Rays for my mental delectation.
-
It hasn't rained any more since mid-morning, but the gray skies have kept the sun (and temperatures) at bay.

My local PBS station is carrying it at 10:00 tonight. I can record it for you , DR George--I owe you one.
If it's being carried on the HD channel, I'll record it from there.

I watched last night's RESCUE ME while I ate lunch. Some fun stuff, and Steven Pasquale got to sing a lovely tune (in a dream sequence) until his boorish brother intruded on the dream and spoiled his song.
-
Then I watched LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD. It's a puzzling film, of course, with endless possibilities of explanations. I knew this going in so I just enjoyed the experience of it: the gorgeous decor and the amazing cinematography, etc.
In a few days when I take out the Blu-ray, I'll look forward to seeing it again to appreciate the complex make-up of this film.
-
I got many of the bonus features watched, but there are a couple of the director's documentary shorts which I ran out of time to watch, so they'll have to be on tonight's menu.
-
I did enjoy the featurette with many of the collaborators on the film talking about its making. And the director's audio interview was also informative. The French film scholar was less interesting merely repeating much of what had already been discussed about the movie.
The trailers basically tell the story so the audience won't have to figure that part out. I found that very interesting.
-
This means I should be able to find time to watch MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST and NURSE JACKIE tonight.
I also noticed on Showtime On Demand that they already have episode 3 of NURSE JACKIE up if I want to get a head start on next week's episode (it's not in HD, sad to say). I'll see what kind of time I have left tonight. I might be able to squeeze in a movie. I also have THOUSANDS CHEER left to finish.

I thought THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD-rAMydQEQ) was amusing. But I'm weird that way. :)

I shall probably be E&T more than non-E&T until the show opens on July 10. Getting some huge pre-records done for the band to play along with. Always a major effort, but it gives critics an opportunity to decry me for not crediting my musicians (as one idiot did last year on CINDERELLA).

What a long day it has been! All rewarding and profitable but long. I had a wonderful visit with Liz and Alex and I have two loveely charts to do for them. We had a long work session on BABES IN TOYLAND which went well, and I had two phone conversations with the recently-robbed-of-his-Tony Larry Blank M rs Jo Loesser who always makes me smile with affection.
Now that I'm home I'm making chicken soup. The garlic has been chopped and put in the pot with the chicken and several onions, which are boiling away and making my apartment smell delicious. I need to start cleaning and chopping vegetables.
Liz' son Nicholas, whom I've not seen since he was about 4 years old, is graduating high school and heading off to Kenyon College in Ohio. He just played Emile De Becque. Here's his youtube performance. He's now studying voice with his grandmother, the fantastic Shirley Callaway.

It's amazing how much he looks like his father!
-
Not a bad voice ;) What will he be studying there?
-
He does have a nice voice. :D

Writing.

Oops! Bruce, I'm so sorry I gave away the title of the new number. I made a point of not mentioning it on this board after we saw the staged reading in your living room with Patrick Cassidy, but I figured enough people had seen it by now, it wasn't a secret anymore. I promise I won't mention it again.

And here's Kathy Griffin weighing in on Letterman and Palin.

Yes, I agree that Russ Hobbie is the spitting image of George from the movie. And yes, that is quite a porno tongue he has!
Oh, and I noticed you eliminated the character of Juanita's boyfriend. That was a good move - I don't think we'll miss him.

We're not there yet, but they have been talking about furloughs for us. :-\
-
I've never watched Kathy Griffin before, only seen clips of her. I didn't find her funny.
-
I plan to take advantage of our library before it closes again. So far I haven't read that it might again.
-
So, Jane, when are you going to post some vacation photos?
-
Good evening. Crazy week, I'm tired....more to come tomorrow...
-
I've never watched Kathy Griffin before, only seen clips of her. I didn't find her funny.
Horseracing. :)
I love Kathy, but I know some people who just hate her...I don't know why. ::)
;)
-
DR Laura, once I get them from Keith. I have only glanced at them. We took a wonderful, formal, photo on our anniversary I would use as a new avatar, if the new avatars weren't munchkin size.

Most of my family think she's funny...I don't. I think you're right DR George horse racing

I was pleased with Larry King's reaction to her thinking even babies are fair game. Even if I think a joke or comment is funny or true, I think children should be off limits. I remember a few of the press making fun of Chelsea Clinton's hair when she was young & others called them on it.
-
Amy, no problem.
-
What a nice do-nothing day I've had.

She's brilliant when she's on but she's always sharp.

Cooking is done. I now have enough chicken soup to feed an army. I going to let it cool for 90 minutes or so before I put it into storage containers and half of it into the freezer.
-
to feed an army.
And, no doubt, you shall!! :D
-
I'm off to rehearsal. It's our second half tonight. Our intermission is right after Shakespeare's act 3, scene 4, when Romeo goes up into Juliet's chambers for the night. ;)
Until later!
-
Coincidentally, I made chicken soup today as well.

Perhaps DR MBarnum would follow opera more if he saw Teddy Tahu Rhodes perform:

Nathan Gunn didn't work for him. Can't hurt to try!

You have to know what photos of Teddy to post to get our Mikey's attention!

Good Evening!
Just remember folks, there's no "better", just "different".
-
Well, the cool and sunny day turned into an overcast and much cooler afternoon and evening. Let's just say that I'm glad I left the apartment earlier this afternoon with a hooded sweatshirt.
Again, not complainin', just sayin'.
-
...And I'm still trying to figure out if it's a good thing or bad thing that the counter-staff at City Bakery "remember" me now. ;)
-
I'm quite mellow yellow right now. I've watched two motion pictures and will finish a third by the end of the evening. I've had a few telephonic conversations, but basically I've done exactly what I wished to, and shall do the same tomorrow.
-
Well, no one can say we didn't get to page six.
-
As for the "title that shall not be mentioned, but was", it reminds me of "You Gotta Take Pains" that Donna, The Dominatrix, sings in Eating Raoul. -Just the title, since I haven't heard the song from Nudie.
-
I don't think Apple should get away with charging for an Operating System upgrade. :P
Well, if you upgrade to an iPhone 3G - which is now only $99 - or the iPhone 3GS - which comes out Friday - then the update would be free. ;)
-

I saw that awful show! My friend Richard Norton was one of the producers. Talk about turning a funny movie into a poor musical. I don't even remember Donna. I do remember that Eddie Korbich was in it and we went out afterwards. He spent the whole time cruising the friend I brought along. Oy! I don't remember the friend now, either.
-
Back from the fancy French restaurant. It turns out it was a live demonstration, but the participants [the "audience"] did not actually get to cook. Which was fine.
And the meal afterwards was quite lovely! :)
And just what composed said meal, DR DAW?

Larry - If you all went out afterwards and were having normal conversation, was that "cruising" or was that just a simple and socially fine attempt to flirt and determine possibly mutual interest?
-

I'm sure they remember your sparkling personality :)
-
Cilla, have you gotten to read or hear any of the First Wives Club material through Rupert Holmes?
-

No, he's not big on sharing something he's working on. He has said a few things from time to time, but nothing very specific. He's also working on three other shows right now, so he doesn't write very often.
-
During CHESS, we (okay, I) was imagining a sing-along with the dogs
"how i wanna pee and where I wanna pee and when I wanna pee and why i wanna pee"
Can i say "Pee" on a family site?
-

He was working the room. I was hardly a part of the conversation.

It's cooler here now, but earlier in the evening, it felt very close inside the house. I was sitting in front of a fan or I would have had to turn on the AC, I believe.
-
I watched the two documentary shorts on the LAST YEAR second disc. Both interesting and show the director's fondness for vivid imagery and a moving camera.
-
Next, I watched a Blu-ray without having a review pad in my lap: RAGING BULL which I recently got for a very cheap price. Brilliant film, and the Blu-ray looks excellent, particularly the fight sequences.
-
I watched a couple of the documentaries on the Blu-ray. They were simply ported over from the DVD release, but I'd never watched them before so I did tonight. Very interesting how the fights were filmed and the rationale for the way they were filmed.
-
Next, I watched Monday night's NURSE JACKIE. An excellent episode. This show is really growing on me. The characters are all interesting with quirky personalities that make them worth following.
-
I watched another episode of THE CLOSER from the Season 4 set. This was the one about two drug dealers being given last rites by a priest and Brenda trying to get information to arrest the guilty parties. This was the episode that ended the Priority Homicide Division and created the Major Crimes Division.
-
I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The boys were on, and it's SO clear that Col. Mayer is coming back soon with all of this talk about Noah moving past his father's influence, etc.
-
I ended my evening watched the first segment of MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. I didn't have time to watch the whole thing since I had my review to finish writing, but I'll likely get to it tomorrow.
-
Looks like my next work project will be another Blu-ray - PREDATOR 2 from Fox. I have seen the original PREDATOR, but I never saw this first sequel which I don't have high expectations for.
-
Oooohhh...
I had emailed and texted my landlord to tell her that we had found new tenants earlier today. Strangely, but not surprisingly, she did not text or email me back immediately. So, I texted her again this afternoon. And she did respond.
"I'm in Alaska right now."
Oh, OK... Nevermind.
-
Well, here come the severe thunderstorms. Better unplug the computers....
-
I've finished my evening internet surf, so I'm heading downstairs to bed.
Good night!
-
Bruce I just emailed you my thoughts on the reading. I went into a little more detail and some it its FYEO.
-
I want to make sure what I post about Nudie Musical won't cause problems so I am letting BK have first look
-
As for "Chess - In Concert", I really hope the levels are "corrected" on the CD version. They seem to be vary quite widely on the PBS broadcast.
-
Okay first meeting. Hopefully the cast will be as good as it can be! I guess that's MY job.
-
Thunderstorms at DR CILLA's house means we shall have them in the morning.
I also like to listen to the EATING RAOUL cast CD....some of those songs are pretty funny.
-
And it seems that GOD'S LITTLE ACRE is available from sellers at Amazon.com, I think I will buy a copy. I did not know it was on DvD.
-
I won't dance, don't ask me, I won't dance, don't ask me.....I won't dance, merci beaucoup.

HA!!! Mine too! Especially the really bad synth patches!

Show Girl is live at Kritzerland. So much easier than with the webgal - live instantly and easily.

Well, I am home....actually, I have been for a while. It was another long rehearsal, tonight. Call time was 6:30 and we got notes first. That took about 45 minutes. We didn't actually start working until about 7:30. We worked on the party scene in our first act where Romeo and Juliet first meet, and went through that about five or six times. Then we started our second act (after intermission)...at about 10:00 pm! My only scene in the second act is at the very end and we didn't get to it. Juliet was really struggling with his [sic] lines and the energy was dropping as we plodded on. We actually ended rehearsal at about 10:45 and will pick up where we left off today, then run the second act all the way through. That's the plan for tomorrow.
Wish us luck! :-\
-
Otherwise, I am actually having enjoying it all. I don't mind having a lot of down time, and not ever having seen "R&J" live, it's fun just watching the show. :)
-
