TOD:

DVD - Driven, just to see it on my Blu Ray player even though the disc is not BR.  I like the film although it really is sort of ordinary.  Sly Stallone, Burt Reynolds, Kip Pardue, Gina Gershon (this years' Rosie in BBB), and Robert Sean Leonard are fun to watch.

CD - GOD'S LITTLE ACRE, most enjoyable score.  I like this CD a lot.  I ordered the DVD from an Amazon seller.  I have only seen parts of the movie on the old CBS late movie, and the way they broke up the movies with TONS of commercials was so irritating, I rarely watched anything when it was on that network.

Friday morning greetings!  Thunderstorm watches in the Miami Valley today.  I'm off this afternoon to a teleconference with the grantwriters.

My book group met here last night and brought a nice assortment of books to our Lincoln Literary Roundtable.  I'll post the list when I get it compiled.  They liked the finger-foods I served - brownies, peanut crisp bars, grapes, Bing cherries.

I have a busy weekend coming up so I don't think I will have time to watch any movies.

I will listen to a couple of cds I bought in LA. Ann Hampton Callways's new cd and cast recording of Closer Than Ever with Lynn Winterseller, Sally Mayes, Richard Muenz and SMINTW (according to some Dear Readers)

It is a real shame the Richard Muenz is unable to sing anymore.

It's always fun to finally catch a classic.  Last night I watched JULES ET JIM for the first time on TCM.  I thought it was wonderful until the rather melodramatic ending.  In some respects, I think I might still prefer Paul Mazursky's take, WILLIE AND PHIL (which has yet to make it to DVD.)

IIRC, PHONE BOOTH was originally conceived as a vehicle for Jim Carrey.  If that had happened, the movie would have taken a lot more than just ten days to shoot and would have probably run at over two hours.

I'm curious if anyone watched the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE elimination show last night?

It's becoming quite unfair that certain people were featured so much in the Las Vegas shows that they have huge fan followings even if they were the worst performers on Wed (phillip and even in particular). I actually really like both of them but it was clear they were 2 of the weakest on wed).

Yet they can never be in the B3, cause they are so popular (and i am not crazy about either of their partners). So they are both lucky.

I thought the 3 strongest dances were (asuka and vitolia, jonathan and karla, ade and melissa, and). The first 2 were my least favorites last week.

I thought that the  weakest were (randi and evan, jason and caitlin and kapono and ashley, and jeanine and phillip).

It depends on much on the routines. I really loved max and kayla last week but was not as crazy about their routine this week. But i thought they were great together.

Okay so because evan and phillip are so popular we have the B3 of: jason, caitlin (who i think are amazing although this week she sucked at hip hop), ashley and kapono (who i don't care for) and kayla and max (i was shocked they were B3).

For the girls to me it was 100% clear it had to be ashley going. I have no idea who disagreed. But that was so clear. For the guys it was clear jason had to stay. But this is where i totally disagreed with the judges. Based on performances max needed to stay. But the judges thought kapono's style was better (even though max was 100% on last week and this week). Kapono was just average to me. So based on performance i thought he 100% should have gone (they sent max home which was crazy). Max and kayla could have been an amazing couple. This is ridiculous!

Good morning, all! I slept in and I feel good. I'm getting my laundry together and that will begin shortly. After that, I have some gospel writing to do and a trip to the NYPL.

Christine Andreas is a wonderful lady. I don't see her often enough to consider her a friend, but I am quite fond of her.

DR Ginny, who is this Mr Shafor and how did he get involved with the company I started eons ago?

DR JRand 58, I found a remaindered copy of the Brummel book on Amazon yesterday while I was looking for a picture of the DVD. Thanks for your kind offer to find me a copy.

TOD:
DVD: several Mary Martin and Jean Arthur movies
CD: Liz Callaway, Guy Haines,  pirated tapes of McGlinn's DUBARRY WAS A LADY and ONE TOUCH OF VENUS

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm not down at The Apple Store.  Nor, was I.  -However, my friend, Allen was.  He was around the 40th person in line.  They started letting people in for iPhone purchases at 7:00am, and he was out about 45 minutes later.  Not too bad at all.  -And, yes, the lines are nowhere near what they were when the last iPhone incarnation came out. There have been reports of people popping in and out of AT&T stores this morning in under 15 minutes!

Good morning!

I've already shut the windows and doors and turned off the attic fan. By 8:30, it was no longer cooler outside than inside the house. This weekend is going to be really miserable in terms of heat and humidity. I plan to spend as much of it inside as possible. Thank goodness, the yard doesn't need mowing yet.

I have no idea, DR Elmore.  Remember, I gave up the stage when Richard and I got married, which was only a couple of years after you left town.  I went to the 10-year anniversary of that company and they acted like I was some dinosaur.  The Aug. 15 event will be interesting...

My work project today is Disney's upcoming release of CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC with Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy. I like both the leads, so I'm hoping it's light and funny. That's the appearance it gives from reading the liner notes. It's the Blu-ray version, of course.

I really, really like PHONE BOOTH, and have since I first saw it when it came out. I haven't upgraded to the Blu-ray. The last time I checked the price, it was higher than I wanted to pay, but maybe I'll look around for an Amazon Marketplace deal today. I'd like to have it with its best possible quality.

Christine Andreas is a Camden, NJ gal--my hometown!

Her rendition of "On A Clear Day" - which was arranged by her husband, Martin Silvestri - is one of my favorite vocal performances on record (well, CD), and I was fortunate enough to hear it - and her - in person during an audition, with Martin playing for her.  In fact, we heard it twice since the Team asked for an encore!  They were in the midst of recording the album, and it was just as thrilling to hear it again a few months later when the CD came out.

DR Jennifer - I watched the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE elimination show...

First of all, I really like Mia Michael's opening number.  And Kristina Debarge's so-obviously lip-synced performance had me laughing and rolling my eyes.  -And I always feel it's a little "unfair" to the contestants when they feature a musical act that has some not-as-talented or just-as-talented dancers.  In any case...

Yes, it's a popularity contest.  You know that.  I know that.  And we really can't do anything about it.  So... Moving on...

As for who went home last night, it may have been a week or two early for those two to leave, but I don't think either of them would have made it to the final four.

I've seen her a number of times.  First when she was a rather "just okay" Eliza in the 20th anniversary revival of MY FAIR LADY when it tried-out in Philly, a few years later I saw her as a very fetching Laurie in OKLAHOMA (again in Philly then on B'way--the only thing off was her being a brunette.)  Then she was absolutely wonderful in ON YOUR TOES.

I haven't even heard her in SCARLETTE PIMP but then I avoid anything having to do with Wildhorn.

Christine was the second brunette Laurie I can recall; the first was Leigh Beery in the 1969 Lincoln Center production with Bruce Yarnell as Curly, Margaret Hamilton as Aunt Eller, and Leroy Ream as Will Parker. It was quite wonderful.

My book group friends stayed until after 11 last night, so I missed ROYAL PAINS.  Wonder if it's repeated any time during the week.
Go to usanetwork.com and check their schedule!
Tomorrow morning at 10 am.
Ah, it looks like I might be able to watch it online, too.  Tomorrow at 10am, I have an appointment for a haircut.
And, no, I don't have the ON THE TOWN recording, but will look for it in NYC.

All the CD stores are gone in Manhattan!

I prefer to buy from "new and used" on amazon.com these days,

And book stores are going fast everywhere it seems. I, too, buy both new and used from amazon--I love books, but they're just too expensive!

Unfortunately, the entrance to the 405 South was closed for bush trimming. I don’t know about you but bush trimming at eleven-thirty on a Thursday is just stupid, stupid, stupid (that is three stupids). Why can’t they bush trim at six in the morning so they don’t have to cause people grief? Better yet, why don’t they leave the damn bushes untrimmed? Let the damn bushes alone, that’s what I say. I’ve had it with the bush trimming, frankly.

But if they trimmed bushes at six in the morning they might wake someone up  ;D

I have given up mowing the yard for the summer, well at least as long as it's hot.   My yard guy said he'd be happy to come back.  So, now I will be doing some trimming, maybe some planting and won't have to spend 1/2 day on my weekends to mow.

I really liked this movie despite the changes made from the books. I think Isla FIsher did wonderfully. She basically made the movie for me.

re: So you think you can dance

I know a lot of it is popularity. BUT I just feel bad that some people got so popular simply because of their exposure before the Top 20 started. I just don't find it fair.

I do agree that the guy who went home would not have made F4. But to me if you dance great both weeks, and then do a good solo then you should not be sent home.

I'm home sick today. I could feel Wednesday evening that I was coming down with something. I suffered through yesterday at the office because I had a meeting and other things that needed to be done but I woke up this morning and decided there was no way I was going into work. I called in sick and have spent most of the day in bed. I feel better and I have Saturday and Sunday to recover also. I will be back to work on Monday I"m sure.

I'm glad it didn't happen earlier in the week, what with the Gates and Luce presentation.

J and R is still around but it's way, way downtown and I mean way downtown, just a few blocks north of the Financial District.

Academy is still around also but you can't always depend on them since they are a used CD store. They may not have what you want right away so you have to make multiple trips hoping someone has turned in a CD they no longer want.

I watched last night's ROYAL PAINS while I ate lunch. As usual, Evan got on my last nerve with his skirt-chasing (even though he got his comeuppance at the end of the episode). The story of the senator's son was very engrossing, and I like the doctor's "associate" very much and hope we get to know more about her.

Then I watched CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC. Well, comedy is something for individual tastes. I was hoping for a light, fun little romp, and I found it to be heavy-handed, clumsily directed, and rather lame in terms of humor. What a fabulous cast has been assembled for this, but it just didn't work for me for much of it, and the story's manipulation of a "cure" for her and turning down her dream job (and one she would have been perfect for) just didn't ring true.

I did like the "living mannequins," thought that was a bit of inspired surrealism, and Hugh Dancy did his best to play straight man to the ridiculous lunacy going on around him. I was very disappointed in Isla Fisher who was just so frenetic in her desperate bid for laughs. And the character just made me mad owing $16,000 and rather than becoming responsible, just decided to be creative in the ways of dodging her debt (like the people she owed didn't need the money or have their own bills to pay). I didn't find that funny.

The movie wasn't very long, so I had time to watch all of the bonus features, not that there were a ton of them.

There were some productions featurettes about some of the production staff like costume designer Patricia Field. None of them were very long (most about 2-3 minutes each), but they were the only bonuses in HD.

Post by: Matt H. on June 19, 2009, 01:32:43 PM
There were three music videos. There were a couple of minutes of bloopers and four deleted scenes. That was about it for bonuses.

The Blu-Ray of Butch Cassidy, despite the pronouncements of Mr. Robert A. Harris, is a lackluster affair - way too soft, with iffy color and frankly of all the Blu-Rays I now own, this one looks the closest to its DVD counterpart.  A shame - I'm sure the camera negative is fine and would yield a wonderful transfer, but this isn't it.

Two-Time Tony Nominee Sets Local Performance (http://www.middletownjournal.com/entertainment/music/two-time-tony-nominee-sets-local-performance-168348.html)

I'm so excited!  DR Elmore and I saw Christine Andreas in the Oklahoma revival and I've wanted to see her perform again ever since.

For the record (so to speak) the song can found on the CD "Love is Good"

DR JRand, SAFE VIBES!  Do you have a basement to hang out in?  In our first Michigan house we had a long narrow unfinished strip that was for storage & laundry.  It was truly boring to go in there.

Last night we watched TAKEN on NetFlix.  We liked it very much.

No basement, we will go to the hallway....but the radar shows everything a few miles north of us.....not even a breeze right now....time will tell.

Still, very pretty to look at and the songs were quite good - very American-sounding and catchy.

DR Laura - If you click on the "Book" in the Safari window - it should be right below the URL window, the list of your Bookmarks will come up in the browser window.  Just click on the Bookmark you wish to delete to select it, then hit "Delete".

The click on the "book" again to go back to the regular browser window.

I didn't read what Robert Harris had to say about BUTCH CASSIDY, but I found parts of it beautiful to look at (the sepia opening sequence was great) and much of the tracking stuff the same blurry smear it's always been on home video.

A so-so Blu-ray for me. The sound was better than I was expecting.

After that I put in an episode of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. This is a compilation disc of four episodes from the 7-year run of the series. Paramount sent it to me, but it was assigned to another reviewer and he got his own copy, so I got to keep the one I was sent, and I watched one episode tonight.

This one had an Enterprise vessel from the past coming through a time warp into the future where Picard et al were. Nice to see Christopher McDonald looking so youthful and handsome. And Whoopi was on this episode and looked about 50 pounds lighter than she is now.

Next, I watched another episode of THE CLOSER, the last on disc 3 of the set. This was the one with the transvestite who fooled the team (but not me) when she made an appearance in the female drag of her deception.

I didn't remember how they eventually trapped him in the crime, so that part was really fun to see again.

After that I finally got around to watching the rest of this week's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. Lily Tomlin is a saint to put up with all Kathy's shenanigans. It was a fun show.

And I ended my evening skimming through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The boys weren't on, but they were in the previews for next week, and so was (the undead) Col. Mayer.

WOW!  I may have to plan a trip to L.A. to see this one if it works out timing-, work- and money-wise...

'Grey's Anatomy's' T.R. Knight heads for the stage -- in L.A., not N.Y. (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2009/06/greys-anatomys-tr-knight-heads-for-the-stage-in-la-not-ny.html)

"Culture Monster has learned that Knight will play Leo Frank in the Donmar Warehouse production of “Parade,” which will open at the Mark Taper Forum on Oct. 24 (for those who really love, Knight, previews start Sept. 24).

Knight will star as Leo Frank in the 1998 musical, co-conceived by Hal Prince with a book by Alfred Uhry (“Driving Miss Daisy”) and  music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown (“13”). Tony-winner Rob Ashford will direct and choreograph the show, which tells the true story of the arrest, conviction and lynching of Leo Frank in Atlanta after the Civil War."

I'm listening to Shrek, The Musical - not a fan at all.  The music is so bland and typical, and it sounds just like every B'way show sounds these days, which also bland and typical and processed and over-produced.

J and R is still around but it's way, way downtown and I mean way downtown, just a few blocks north of the Financial District.

It's not that way downtown. However, I've always found it worth the trip on Park Row.  -And I usually end a shopping excursion there with a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge since it's just minutes away.
