Yesterday, I wrote:

Three hours and forty-five minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

Our run-through last night last three hours and forty-five minutes...including the intermission. :-X

It otherwise went quite well.  My friend Josh (the mortician who moved to Newport, Oregon last year) was up visiting friends and he came to our run-through.  I didn't get much time to chat with him after the show, but he seemed to really enjoy it (aside from the run-time).

Good morning, all! Because I have an appointment tomorrow morning  with my doctor, I am heading down to the law office this morning to work on the McGlinnventory. After that, a trip to Toyland to see my accountant and accomplish some other thing in the office.

I am quite tired this morning.

My favorite card game is Euchre....because it is simple and quick....unlike DR GEORGE's current play....currently.

The first card game I played was either Old Maid....or more likely Go Fish or Slap Jack.

DR Ben, we arrive this coming Sunday evening, June 28.  I have an errand to do at your workplace and Richard and I have some sightseeing to do on the Lower East Side, so maybe we could meet you for lunch early in the week?  I'm glad to hear you're getting some well-earned time off.

We're seeing IN THE HEIGHTS on Monday evening, BLITHE SPIRIT on Tuesday evening, and HAIR on Wednesday afternoon, and keeping our other evenings open to try to see TWELFTH NIGHT with DRs Elmore and Jose.

We fly out Saturday morning, July 4.

My visit to the FC is not a fixed appointment.  I ordered online a copy of the 2008 Philanthropy Annual, which UPS left on the porch in the rain when we were away for a week.  It's totally ruined and my claim to UPS has gone nowhere.  Thought I'd just pack it up and hand-deliver it to the FC and hope to get a replacement.  As a retired CC supervisor and member of the Cleveland Advisory Board, I thought they could have sent me a complimentary copy...

Anyway, since we have a Wednesday matinee, Monday or Tuesday would probably be best to venture downtown.

It's a funny premise but it's haphazardly executed.  The guy just interpolates his own scenes into the original prose.  Some of it is hilariously funny and off-the-wall but other times just repetitious.

This book is from the same guy who stole my Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter novel.  Grrrrr...  He had better stay away from my Ben Franklin is actually Merlin the Magician idea.

It's a symphony in hammering and yammering next door.  The first movement began at seven with the allegro con brio.  Ten minutes later, after the entire neighborhood was up, the andante began, with only occasional hammering and yammering.  And so it goes.

RE HARRY POTTER Blu-rays:

The third film got the best reviews of the five released thus far. It was the first to not follow the books so slavishly, and it's very exciting as are all of the other films. It also was the first not directed by Chris Columbus, so that was also a big plus.

The Blu-rays look and sound marvelous.

My work project for today is THE JONAS BROTHERS: THE 3-D CONCERT EXPERIENCE.

The Jonas Brothers' concert film didn't do anything like the box-office business that the Miley Cyrus concert did a year ago, so I know Disney was a bit disappointed.

At any rate, they've extended the running time by 13 minutes from the theatrical cut, and there are both the 3-D and 2-D versions in the Blu-ray package. I'll start with the 3-D version and then just spot check the 2-D version. I have NO intention of sitting through the concert twice.

There don't appear to be many bonus features. Some extra songs and a behind-the-scenes featurette, but that looks to be pretty much it. If I'm lucky, I can finish up with this during the afternoon and have the evening free for something fun.

In college, it was definitely Hearts, and even during the early years of my first partnership, we used to have card night with friends every Tuesday, and we played Hearts. Really enjoyed those evenings.

Now, if I'm asked to play cards, I'd rather play gin rummy.

I used to play Bridge (learned how on my first computer), but I haven't played in so long I've forgotten almost everything about the bidding.

Simplier games like Old Maid, Go Fish, and Battle are also favorite memories from my youth.

I really don't understand this symphony in hammering and yammering.  They make more noise than you can possibly imagine, and then ten minutes later it's down to almost nothing and now it's total silence.  Why do they DO that?  What sense does it make?  Why don't they start quietly, THEN make the big noise.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The first card games I remember being taught/playing: Go Fish, Old Maid, War.  There was also something called "Spit" - where you were supposed to actually spit.  I'm guessing that was not the official "Hoyle" version.

When I was playing for the community theatre circuit around the DC area, there were a lot of bridge players among the cast and crew.  I picked up the game pretty fast, even if I was never that strategic a player.  Of course, I "lost" the game just as fast as I picked it up.

The latest issue of Rolling Stone has hit my desk.  In the Chart Flashback on the final page, it lists the top ten albums for the week of June 14, 1969.  At number one, the HAIR...soundtrack?

Nope, the OCR.

The movie did not come out until 1979.

I've decided to put Niki Scalera on the Nudie demo - she sings the songs wonderfully and she's much more what I want vocally.  Grant is out of town until Wednesday, but when he gets back it's pretty easy to make the change, plus we'll add her into the Let 'Em Eat Cake song as we have in the script.

TOD:  I'm pretty sure my first card games were "Old Maid" and "Go Fish".  I soon learned to play "War"....and there were a few stabs at "Rook" with cousins who loved the game but had no interest in making sure I learned it well enough to be competitive with them.

In college, I learned to play "Canasta" and really enjoyed it a lot.  In the late 1970s, as an instructor at the DoD Defense Information School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN, I started learning how to play "Pinochle" when I was living in the barracks there.  This was before I found an apartment.  In my workplace, I began "kibbitzing" a lunch-hour "Bridge" game several instructors and staff  would play each day.

They were gracious enough to allow me to ask questions.  One gave me a crib sheet about bidding and what it all means.  Another loaned me a book on how to play.  I'd get "asides" on how to determine who held what cards based upon the bidding....and then I was off and running and "filling in" whenever one of them could not play.   I later played "Bridge" on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in the Chief's Mess and had a great time.  I also played every time I visited my folks in Virginia (when they lived there before moving to South Carolina).  All the Pulliam family will drop everything for a few sets of "Bridge".  They'll drive 50 miles to do it, too!

Up until three years ago, I played "Bridge" at least two or three times when I was home at Christmas.  It takes four, however, to play "Bridge"...and many folks either go away for the holidays or have too many other things going on to take the time.  And, sadly, many folks I've played with in the past have either aged too much or have died, or they have moved away from my mother's small town of Johnston.

Ah, me.....

Speaking of the Jonas Brothers, i saw a bit of them last night. They were the hosts of the Much Music Video awards (sort of like MTV, although there is an MTV canada).

I guess whoever was in charge of the show was trying to get a lot of big current names. They had the Jonas Brothers performing. Kelly Clarkson. Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas. Lady Ga ga.

I only saw the beginning. But it was odd. It looked like it was held outside (?). And there were no seats. But thousands and thousands of screaming teens!

Nope.  No Broadway Bares for me this year.  Actually, now that I think of it, it's been a couple of years since I've been to a Bares.  I do appreciate the philanthropy behind the event, however, I will say that I've been turned off recently by all the hype and the craziness of it.  I also didn't feel like standing outside in the rain for two hours waiting to get into Roseland.

*And due to the very cramped quarters, there's no way I would have subjected Monkey to those near-"should I call the Fire Marshall" conditions".

Then I watched THE JONAS BROTHERS Blu-ray concert film.

Well, the music (apart from the CAMP ROCK songs which I was familiar with) meant nothing to me, but the boys do work hard to do something apart from just standing there singing.

I have to say youngest brother Nick is either undergoing that period of his life when his voice is changing or he's simply not a very good singer. He's also a nasally singer, my least favorite kind of voice.

Kevin didn't sing a single solo song. Joe got the most solos and then Nick took lead in about four numbers. They might as well have just forgotten about Taylor Swift who came out for one song with the boys. Demi Lovato sang her song from CAMP ROCK and dueted with Joe, but otherwise, she could also have stayed home.

The crowds were huge for them.

The 3-D worked a little better on this than on the Miley Cyrus concert disc, but the old anaglyph system just isn't great. They did throw a bunch of stuff at the camera and set up a couple of numbers to utilize the 3-D. They also sprayed the crowd with foam which looked rather startling in 3-D.

Dropping by again to say hi.  This will probably not translate well to the printed page, but I was watching TAKEN last night and I got to that point where Liam Neeson says "I have a set of very specific skills," at which point the boys (who obviously have inherited my outre sense of humor) said from the other room:

(in a high Monty Python voice) I can talk in this high squeaky voice while flapping my arms like a dodo.  I also crochet lovely sweaters.  And if you press my belly button, I sing Ode to Joy backwards in German.

I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe.

You've trained them well. ;D

Thanks for sharing...I'll check this out, later tonight (much, much later) after rehearsal. ;)

Unbelievable department:  We took part in Gabe's magazine subscription drive for his school and got him and Zach Electronic Gaming Monthly, which gives updates on XBox games, etc.  Well, evidently EGM ceased publication in January 2009 (first interesting fact).  Because lo and behold what should arrive in today's mail but the soft-core porn magazine Maxim, with a note attached saying our subscription to EGM had been transferred to Maxim.  I truly cannot believe the lack of judgment, not to mention the legalities involved--all of you know I am about as far from being a prude as you can get, but to send this in place of a magazine meant for a 10 and 12 year old is absurd.

The library where I work frequently has magazine substitutions when something is no longer published, but I don't ever remember hearing about a switch like this!  Of course, if it did happen here, the library branch(es) could easily shelve it in the adult (not that kind of "adult" ;)) magazine section.

Topic of the Day:  I'm sure we played Fish growing up, but I don't remember ever playing Old Maid.  When we lived in Germany, we learned a few German card games (German playing cards are very different than US cards).  We haven't played it in years, but the only name of a game that I can remember is watten (http://www.pagat.com/trumps/watten.html).  And my mom's mom would cheat every chance she got.  It was so funny to see her cheat like that and "pretend" to deny it all. :D

Here are pictures of three German playing cards:

TOD - When I was in high school, my family played a rummy game called Liverpool.  Our house didn't have AC, so my parents and I would sit up late at night playing Liverpool on our screened-in porch until the bedrooms cooled off.  That ended when the 1967 riots brought about a curfew and we had to stay inside.  We still played cards, but it wasn't as nice as out on the porch.

I can’t remember which country we saw far more practical crutches & canes.  They had a brace for the arm to slip into.  They might not have looked as nice but I can guarantee, especial the cane replacement, was far steadier & safer.

DR Cilla, vibes your father doesn’t fall while using his crutches.

My parents have a friend who had a walker with wheels (that concept doesn't seem right to me) that her mother couldn't use because she couldn't grip the brakes.   Anyway, He borrowed it and will be using that instead of the crutches.

I'm starving.  At three, I shall go out and find something amusing to eat.  There's a new jernt on Ventura Blvd. called The Counter, which is basically a build your own burger place.  I've driven by several times and it's been jammed with hordes of the kind of peoples that I loathe.

The Counter (http://www.thecounterburger.com/) makes a good burger.  I believe I may have dined at one when I was out there last year.  And I've also dined at their Charlotte, NC, location.

bk - If you want to cut down on your in-store time, you can study the MENU (http://www.thecounterburger.com/menu/) in advance, and formulate your personal burger before you get there.

This looks good, and they have sweet potato fries.  Bruce, if you go please ask if they make their own veggie burgers.

I never worked with him, but I knew his partner from the tour of The Producers.  However, I could have sworn that someone here on HHW had mentioned his name before.  I contacted DRs FJL and elmore, but they did not know him.  Maybe I was just mixing up the names.  Or... In any case... He was a great talent, and he died way too young.

Thank you.  I do enjoy a good homemade veggie burger.  My favorite restaurant in town, because of their awesome burgers which were awesome, closed a couple of years ago.  I like my veggie burgers with little avocado, tomato, & lettuce.  Sometimes with jack cheese.  I noticed there is only jalapeno jack cheese on this menu.

I used to get a great veggie burger with a pesto mayo sauce in Ann Arbor.  I don't remember the name of the restaurant.  They had fantastic sweet potato fries.

Since bk mentioned THUNDERBALL on Blu-ray a few days ago, I remembered that I had never watched any of the making-of documentaries on THUNDERBALL, so I put in the Blu-ray and watched two of them. I had no idea that the original song over the credits was going to be Shirley Bassey (and then Dionne Warwick( singing "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."

I am SO glad they got the REAL title song and chose Tom Jones to sing it.

When I watched THE THUNDERBALL PHENOMENON, I was reminded about 007 cologne and lunch boxes and games. Oh, such memories!

Since I'll be working on Season 2 of BURN NOTICE tomorrow, I thought it best to put in season 1's final episode and watch it so I could pick right up with the story tomorrow. So glad I did that and now will be ready to start season two with no confusion at all tomorrow.

I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS, but the boys weren't on. They are on tomorrow along with Colonel Mayer. That should be fun.

And I concluded my evening with tonight's THE CLOSER. Really suspenseful episode, and the scenes between Kyra and Mary McDonnell were crackling with hostile vibes. We have not seen the last of her, I fear. We did have to bid goodbye tonight to one of the series' most beloved characters. It was handled very movingly. This may end up being Kyra's Emmy submission episode for NEXT season's awards. Only season 4 episodes can be submitted for nominations and awards to be announced next month.

Just watching motion pictures.  Finished Chamber of Secrets and am now watching Leon.  After that, I shall pee (eep, spelled backwards).

Goodnight.

Rehearsal went well....although MANY people had to borrow MY pencils.  I lost a cast member as well...but someone will step in just fine.

Was just told that e-mails were flying back and forth between various Nudie Musical cast members - someone had read what I'd written, my venting in the notes.  If those e-mails involved the three or four ensemble members who were problematic, good.  I have no problem with them knowing exactly how I felt about their work ethic.  But two people got upset because they weren't in my list of people I'd take to NY - which is, of course, very silly, since I was writing very late at night and didn't mention everyone.  Of course, it seems people would rather e-mail back and forth rather than actually call or send an e-mail to the person who could actually tell them what's what.

So tonight (Monday) we had our first rehearsal with costumes and props and make-up (if one had it...I didn't).  We started the first act at 8:45 (ugh) and ended about 10:45.  We started our second act at about 11:07 and ended the show at 12:22.  We actually shaved about 15 minutes from last night's rehearsal.  That's good news!  Now tomorrow (Tuesday) night is our last performance in an empty theater.  Wednesday, we can invite friends to see the show for free!  Thursday is our official opening night!

But it's still a FREAKIN' LONG SHOW!!  I thought that Chris (our director) had made substantial cuts to the original script.  Someone in the crew said that he only cut a few lines here and there and that it's almost the whole original show! :o

No wonder it's SO FREAKIN' LONG!!

But I said this before, I really think that it's a well-acted show.  There is a lot of emotion on the stage and for the most part, it's very effective and appropriate.

I wondered how long it might be before something like this might happen.
