From Yesterday

DR Jose

I did not have the opportunity to go to orlando to see Faith P and Davis G in Sweeney Todd. Although when I saw her in concert she mentioned she was going to do it and she sang one (No One is Going To harm You) and maybe a second song.

She is sooo good. I love seeing her cabaret show.

I'm off soon to the Starr Foundation for a morning presentation then it's back to the office to review a file from two of my colleagues.

Tomorrow I don't have any presentations but I have to work on the file and then I'm leaving at 12:30 for Long Island.

I'm sure the time at Fred and Skip's will be sparkling. If you talk about me be nice  8)

It is beginning to seem that JMK may have been on to something, even if he may have said it partly in jest:  that the noticeable slew of 1-star bad ratings for my YouTube's seems to routinely happen after I post the link on the castrecl list.  I'm testing this right now by having waited a few days to post to catrecl with the Carolina video, but now i'm doing it at a time where there are 27 rating at a 4-1/2 star average, so any damage won't hit as hard if it's only two or three people doing it.

Good morning, all! I just had a wonderful call from my beloved sister-in-law and chef par excellence Jo. She and Randy fly to Seattle tomorrow morning for a cruise up the coast to Alaska. This was a reip my dad wanted to take fro years and never accomplished, so Randy and Jo are doing it for him. After the cruise, they're doing a tour of Western US historical sites, and I hope they have a great time. I hope they have a great time.

This morning, I'm down to Toyland for some work, then back here to update all my footnotes and bibliography for the Main Report on Babes in Toyland. Part of the week as well must be given over to updating the recording notes on Babes In Toyland and Lady of the Slipper. I keep thinking that I'm signing off on this score and it doesn't happen!

I forgot to sign up on virtual line this morning. Oy!

Druxy,   Now that you've been there awhile...How is Austin working out?  Settling in?  Culture shock?  Advantages?  Disadvantages?  Things you miss about LA?

Texas is definitely different from Los Angeles.  More laid back.  People are certainly friendlier.

On the other hand, I do miss my friends.  Even though I didn't see some of them all that often, they were there and, if we wanted, we could get together for lunch or whatever.  I would have loved to have gone to BK's staged reading a couple of weeks ago.

I AM making some connections here; meeting new people involved in local theater and filmmaking.  There seems to be some interest in several places, so hopefully, something will come of that.

I gave a talk at the Austin Network Mixer last week, a place where entertainment industry people meet twice a month.  Sold quite a few books there.

But, what I really miss most is Canter's.  Austin does not have a good deli.  I long for a good corned beef sandwich on Jewish rye.

Sorry to say that even though I've never loved the HTF, mostly due to the despots who run it and moderate it, some of the most ego-ridden and ignorant people ever, I did go there to check out stuff about DVD and now Blu-Ray releases and to read MattH's reviews.  Their discussion board, while way too busy for my tastes, was run by vBulletin, which is sort of like most discussion boards, including this one.  Their new discussion board is ridiculous - unfriendly, cold, bad-looking, difficult to navigate, filled with ads everywhere you look, slow as molasses, and on and on and on.  Very few over there seem happy with it and I think it was a major miscalculation on the part of the owners.  Simply, they were contacted by a company who promised them huge buckets of dough from ad revenue.  And since the site began born out of the ego of its owners, and since the ego stuff is probably old these eleven years later, now it's all about revenue for them - they admit they both have day jobs and they want the HTF to pay them enough so they can quit.  Are - they - MAD?  People come there to read posts, not to purchase things, not to see ads floating around on every page, and since we're in a recession, this was not a very good time to do what they did.  Nor will it work.

Oh, wait a minute--isn't there a Bar Mitzvah or something coming up?  Oy!

Actually, I suspect that CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON could turn out pretty well, since it does have a theatre-oriented pedigree.

This is a link to the website of its composer Fred Barton

http://www.fredbarton.com/latestnews.html

Fred [Barton] is co-composer-lyricist-librettist for Universal's THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, playing at the Universal Studios Park in Los Angeles. After 20 years, Fred joins forces again with co-lyricist, co-librettist, and director Gerard Alessandrini. Jonathan Tolins is the scriptwriter, Lynne Taylor-Corbett is the choreographer, and the production is co-produced by Marc Routh and Broadway Attractions.

I will tell you one thing I love about the new HTF.  It finally works with MSN.  For some reason, when I tried viewing pages in MSN (with their proprietary IE add-on), pages would simply cancel, no matter how many times I disabled pop-ups, etc.  The only way I could view HTF was by going through a browser itself--whether that be IE or Firefox or whatever.  The new Board software works just fine with MSN, which is usually what I have up and running, so I don't need to switch back and forth.

I have "Miss Gulch Returns." :D I think that I would want to see "The Creature!"

Then I watched my work project for the day: the Blu-ray of 12 ROUNDS. It's a cat and mouse film: bad guy has good guy's girl friend and spends the day sending him on little jobs in order to save her (think the first half of DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE). Works well as a brain-dead action movie until the plot falls apart near the end (how he finally figures out what the bad guy is REALLY up to).

The Blu-ray looks excellent. Sound for an action movie might have needed to be revved up a little more.

I watched the unrated version which was a minute longer than the PG-13 theatrical cut. A little more profanity in it (a couple of F-words) was basically the only difference I could note.

There were two commentaries which I did healthy samples of.

There were 8 bonus features, the longest of which was about 30 minutes.

 :'(

How was it for you when you moved?

We have moved so many times & each experience has been different.  One thing I always do now is join the local Newcomers Club.  I always find a book discussion group.    It can be exhausting meeting new people all the time when you don't have comfortable friends to fall back on.  It takes time. I figure it can take up to two years to really feel comfortable with new people, it depends how lucky you are.

Considering how long we have lived here we should have a busier social life.  I think we have turned into homebodies, at least at night.

I'm glad he didn't want to appear in public. Some stars have common sense and realize when it's time to step away from the spotlight. Far too many people don't have the sense to quietly retire. He was 97 fricking years old. He didn't need to be making public appearances.

DR Jennifer I hope you saw some great fireworks last night.  I had meant to wish you a happy Canada Day.

The fireworks were tonight. Canada Day is today.

I did a BBQ at 5:30pm. It started to downpour at 6pm. Till 7:15pm. At 7:20pm we went to see if the event  and fireworks were cancelled. I assumed they would be cancelled.

But there were hundreds of people already there. And it only drizzed a little. But from 8-10pm there no rain at all. And they had the fireworks.

I just know that the actors that I grew up and admired are, I am sure, near the end of their runs.  I have a feeling that in the next 6 months we are going to lose many of our great stars. In my opinion there are hardly any one of today's generation that will be able to replace them.

Most stars these days their longevity are not the same as the stars like Karl Malden

Happy Canada Day! Fingers crossed for the fire works tonight.

I was going to wish you and all Canadians a Happy Canada Day! What is its significance?

Canada Day is basically Canada's birthday. It's a national holiday celebratrating the 1867 anniversary of the British North American Act, in which canada became a country.

Back when other girls were ga-ga over John, Paul, George, and Ringo, Harve Presnell was my heartthrob.  I'd seen him in the national tour of The Unsinkable Molly Brown, with Karen Morrow as Molly, in the early '60s, then as Billy Bigelow in a wonderful Carousel when I was in high school.  Richard and I saw him as Daddy Warbucks in one of the last Annie performances here in NY in 1983.

News of his death makes me very sad.

Good Evening!

I think the weathermen and weatherwomen should just keep predicting rain since it did not rain today.  It seems whenever they predict a chance of rain, then we get the deluge.  Today's forecast - at least when I left the house earlier this afternoon - called for rain starting around 4:00 and continuing through the evening.  Well... The skies did get a bit cloudy around 4:00, but then then cleared, and it turned into quite a nice - if a bit humid night - in New York City.

Needless to say, I lost track of just how many block - miles - I walked today.  But I'd have to say at least six. :)

I had to run a bit ago.  Edith has been approved for a home loan and is out shopping for a house. She and her daughter thought they found the house of their dreams and sent me an email.  So I went over and they were there looking at it.  It's the first house she's looked at.

Good bones but very dated. It's a nice neighborhood, but I think she can do better.  Her realtor has a whole group for them to see on Friday.  She said "Oh no! You'll be gone"  LOL,   I'm glad she trusts me enough to want me to help her. I love house hunting.

Here is a new show out at Universal - Florida I guess.  I am hoping NO ONE involved has Broadway aspirations.  They obviously never saw the original CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU42USygGL4

The Creature from the Black Lagoon (http://www.universalstudioshollywood.com/attraction_creature_black_lagoon.html) is the new show at Universal Studios-Hollywood that replaced their Spider Man Spectacular - which had replaced their Universal Monsters Live Rock and Roll Show (which is still running in Universal Studios-Japan (http://www.usj.co.jp/e/)).  It's just meant to be a 30-40 minute theme park show where the audience can see some dancing, costumes and stunts and hear some familiar (or familiar-sounding) music.  And, hopefully, have a good time - and get off their feet for a while in an air-conditioned theatre. ;)

The current rock and roll show at Universal Studios-Orlando is Beetlejuice's Graveyard Revue (http://www.universalorlando.com/theme-parks/universal-studios-orlando/attractions/live-shows.html).

*And, yes, I have worked for USJ before. ;)

I did.  :)

That's Doug Quint who runs The Big Gay Ice Cream truck.  I actually got a chance to chat with him twice today, once down at Union Square, and then again up by the Port Authority.  I just happened to be walking uptown, and noticed that he had moved there.  It also turns out that he's a fellow musician, a bassoonist, and he plays Broadway shows too.  He was with Beauty & the Beast for a while, and he currently subs into South Pacific every now and then.

He also got a mention in today's NY Times in the article about the current "Food Truck Wars":

Turf War at the Hot Dog Cart (http://bit.ly/11gALt)

*And since he had been trapped in his truck all day, I went ahead and bought a copy of today's Times so that he could have a hard copy of the article.

...And while we were chatting up by the Port Authority, a very tall and imposing man came up to the truck... "Hey, I heard you threw some ice cream on someone!"... Then he flashed a badge.  A police badge. He turned out to be an undercover cop.

I haven't thrown anything on anyone.
"Are you sure? We just got the call."  -Then another cop came up. More badge flashing.
-I've been talking with him for the past 20 minutes, and he's done nothing.
"Well, someone said they saw you throw ice cream on someone."
You can ask the pizza guy over there.  He's been watching me all night. Nothing's happened.

That's when the cops started laughing.

"You're OK, guy.  Just making sure you're doing all right tonight."

Whew!

And, actually, it was funny.  And the cops were cute too.  ;)

4th of July, you bet.

I live across from the CBS lot, which has great fireworks..   I can watch from my window, or my front lawn at the building, or go across the street and down to the LA river where the sound bounces off the walls and sounds like thunder (and the ground moves).

DR Ginny - It sounds like you and DH Richard are having a very good Week of Theatre.  And, yes, we will make sure you start heading down to the lobby at 7:00 tomorrow for your quick cab ride to the Laura Pels.
