Title: JUNEBUGS IN JULY
Post by: bk on July 09, 2009, 12:12:20 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know about the confusion of the Junebugs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to explain the July situation to the Junebugs.

As promised, here is the pre-announcement announcement of the new Kritzerland title.  If you'd like to pre-preorder it, you know the routine - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (6.50 overseas), paid via paypal.com to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  I love this film and love this score and recommend it highly - I think it's going to do really well.

TOPKAPI – WHERE THE JEWELS ARE!

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition CD – the original motion picture soundtrack from Topkapi, with a score by Manos Hadjidakis.

In 1956, blacklisted director Jules Dassin was living in Paris and made a film that would instantly become a prototype for an entire genre of film – Rififi, the classic caper film, with its incredible half-hour long wordless and silent robbery sequence.  He followed that with another international sensation, Never On Sunday.  Then, in 1964, he went back to the caper film, only this time, instead of a gritty black-and-white drama, he did a candy-colored comedy caper film called Topkapi, which starred his Never On Sunday leading lady, Melina Mercouri, along with a great cast that included Maximillian Schell, Peter Ustinov, and Robert Morley as a rag-tag group of thieves out to steal a diamond-encrusted dagger from the Topkapi museum.  The film was a complete delight, a hit, and garnered Ustinov a well-deserved Academy Award.

As with Never On Sunday, Dassin turned to Manos Hadjidakis to provide the score, and Hadjidakis delivered the goods – a score filled with wonderful melodies and orchestral colors that matched perfectly the bright candy-colored images on the screen.  It’s one of those scores that just makes you smile and one that keeps the movie flying along at a wonderful clip.  At the time of the film’s release, United Artists released a soundtrack album, both stereo and mono, but like its release of Tom Jones, the stereo album was really mono – the score was recorded in mono and there were never any stereo masters.  For this CD release, we had both the album masters and a set of 15ips session masters – since the latter were a generation better and cleaner than the album masters, we used those to create the CD.  The original LP ran about thirty-two minutes – this new CD runs over forty-five minutes, and the score has been put into film order, which makes for a terrific listening experience.  Additionally, we found four cues that weren’t used in the film and we’ve included them as bonus tracks.

Topkapi is a colorful, tuneful, exciting, and delightful score by one of Greece’s greatest composers.  As the ad copy says – “It’s where the jewels are.”

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

Good morning, all! I enjoyed reading the blurbs AGAIN and I feel all informed. No DR mentioned the most famous play for a long time in which thr title character never appears, "Harvey." Or did I miss it?

I've got about three pages to write on the scond Liz Callaway chart and I hope to tirn it in this morning around 10 am. After that, I have some work on LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40.

TOD: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
         Jaws
Peter Grimes (I vote for this, since there are several productions on DVD including the "I-m-a-director-really" John Doyle disaster for the Met.)
         Captains Courageous

In regards to NAMT, NYMF, etc...

I was more concerned about bk's casting concerns and requirements, rather than the potential exposure. -Although, to a certain extent, they sort of go hand in hand.  I've just noticed some preliminary cast lists from some of the NYMF shows, and it seems a lot of "good people" have already been lined up for some NYMF shows.  There would be no direct conflict with the possible performance dates, but there could be conflicts with rehearsals.

Jose - I agree about the casting aspect!

Although, on yet another hand, if NYMF actors are already at the end of their performance schedule, some of them might be willing to rehearse the "29 hours" on NUDIE around their performance schedule, and then you have the "safety" of knowing they probably - probably - won't take a job out of town if they have TWO commitments in NYC, both the NYMF and the NUDIE.

DR Jose, re: your Y&R question from last night re: P3 and cane.

This is just going by my memory. So some of it may be a little bit off.

But what i remember was that cane came to town and was working as a bartender ( i think at indigo). Katherine had remembered giving the baby phillip to some woman named violet. Amber was katherine's friend at the time, and she knew the story. And amber was also becoming friendly with cane.

I believe that cane came to town sort of trying to find his mother. And some how a blood test was taken and it came back that jill and cane were not related. But then they took another blood test that confirmed that they were mother and son. And so everyone believed that kathering had stolen and switched jill's baby. Cane was really mad at katherine.

The reason that cane did not look like P3 is because they were saying that phillip (the one who is back now) was not really jill's son. They were saying that katherine switched babies and that cane was the real P3.

More Y&R

And as for DR TCB's question about phillip 3 (the one on now) dying in a car crash. I believe that he was in a car crash. But he did not "die" until later when he was in the hospital with his family watching.  Although now P3 says that he paid the doctor to fake that.

I'm curious which two dancers on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE won't make it to the top 10 tour. I'm sure that they are going to consider this fact (the tour) when deciding who will go.

I'm sure melissa/ade and brandon/janette will be safe. And there is no way they are gonna ditch kayla or phillip's partner (my mind just blanked on her name). So i guess it depends if randi/even are in B3. I think i would get rid of her (i really like kaitlin).

As for the guys i would get rid of kayla's partner (kaono sp?).

We made it through our first invited dress last night mostly intact.  A couple of scene change issues, and Max somehow got lost at intermission and we had to wait for quite a while to start Act II.  The pit monitor mix was fantastic in Act I and then went to hell in Act II--how does stuff like that happen?

In the continuing Saga of the Brain-Dead Trumpeter, it turns out the sound board operator, who had left right after him two nights ago, had found the score in the middle of the road, picked it up and took it home, BUT DIDN'T PHONE ANYONE.  So I spent a good 45 minutes that night looking around, and the theater's managing producer and executive president spent another TWO HOURS walking up and down the highway the next day looking for it.  Can you believe the all around idiocy?

I had to have the "stern Fatherly" talk with the trumpeter--I am not pleased that he had had the score, pre-records and detailed emails going over cuts, etc., for 2 weeks and had obviously not even looked/listened at/to any of them.  He got very defensive and said no one could have sight read better than he did.  Of course I responded that he shouldn't have been sight reading at that point.  I spent an hour last night making a "safety" copy of the trumpet book, which is what I'll give to him.  He better get his sorry little butt over here this morning and get it and spend all day practicing, because it's already been decided if he isn't up to speed for tonight's invited audience dress, he's out.

DR Laura the kittens are so cute, and the names of my little brood all seem to fit them.

It is a good thing for you they have a definite departure date, I’ll have to look into that.  Maybe then Keith will agree to foster a litter & we can give it a try.

Have  you had a Tortie before?  They are notorious for not liking to be held or cuddled,  In fact the only one I know that did enjoy petting it was found at 4 weeks old & received extra handling.  How is little Antonia with it?   We took Bosco home at 5 weeks old and she never did take to it, unless we were at the vet.  Initially I had to carry her around in a little basket.

Thank you DR ArnoldMBrockman, Michael S., Jose, DAW, FJL, JRand, & DantMan.

I should correct the location of Keith’s injury.  It is on the lower outside of his right foot not his ankle.  It is still swollen & turning black and blue.  He said it didn’t crack, it popped 3 times.   No wonder he was hopping up & down so much when it happened.

So the idiot says he is going to the gym, but not to worry he won’t use the cross trainer only a bicycle.  .  He just iced it and has been keeping his foot elevated on his desk most of the morning.  Last night I pulled out some ace bandages, which he did not like at all.  I then gave him an old foot boot of mine I used for a hair line fracture of my ankle, which also finally healed an old injury of a severely sprained ankle.  He likes this, even wore it all night.  It has three velcrov straps to adjust the tension.

Off to convince Keith not to go to the gym.

BK, I assume if I pre-order TOPKAPI, I can also do SHOW GIRL and get combined shipping.

I have been gone so much lately--any spare copies of COPS AND ROBBERS lying about you might be willing to sell?

Yes, I always hold back about thirty copies of everything for emergencies, so you can get all three - just include the one shipping charge.  If you want to do it through the site itself, just order Show Girl x 3 and then in the message box make certain to put the other two titles.

Great blurbs, Bruce.  Truth be told, if I like an author or am familiar with the title of a book, I never read the blurbs.  When I am unfamiliar with a title or author, I usually read just enough of a blurb or the notes on a dust jacket to see if I am at all interested.  Same with previews of movies, I guess.  I like being surprised.  (EXCEPT IN REAL LIFE!!!)

Topic of the Day:  in the mid-1990s, I read this novel about a ship of gay pirates (set in the 1700s or so) and their "adventures" ;) but I don't remember the name of it.

FORTUNES OF WAR (http://www.amazon.com/Fortunes-War-Mel-Keegan/dp/0975088491/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1247161432&sr=8-11#)

Product Description:

In 1588 a young mercenary and the son of an English earl meet by a quirk of fate. Dermot Channon is a soldier, while Robin Armagh has been sheltered on his father's estate. Love blossoms fast while war looms on the horizon. Under the thundercloud of armed conflict, Channon leaves England and the Spanish Armada sails soon after. Robin despairs of seeing him again, for their countries are locked in an endless struggle. Years fly by, and in 1595, when Robin's brother is taken for ransom in Panama, the dangerous duty of delivering the price of his life and liberty falls to Robin. He sails with the historical '1595 Fleet,' commanded by Francis Drake, hoping to bring home his brother. But Fortune has other plans for Robin and Channon. Ahead of them is a an epic adventure in hazardous waters where old enmities, Spanish and English, shape their future together -- and try to drive them apart.

Another play for DR Michael Shayne's list:

MARVIN'S ROOM

Marvin(I beleve) is in the Play

My memory of the play is that he is talked about and never seen. I haven't seen the film version but, knowing Hollywood, I would suspect there's a scene by his deathbed.

Hume Cronyn plays Marvin in the movie and while the role wasn't built up for him, he is plainly seen in the bedroom sceens.

Many thanks to DR ELMORE who recommended the DVD of IM WEISSEN ROSSL.  I have never IN MY ENTIRE LONG LIFE seen anything like it!

The venue...I guess called the Morbisch...is a HUGE HUGE outdoor auditorium....the stage must be the size of a football field or more.  The operetta itself is hilarious.  The costumes are gorgeous....the singing glorious....and dancing and staging is imaginative - one might say fantastic.  It never stops!

I love this DVD and look forward to the other one I also ordered.  And as you might expect in a German operetta....we also get slap dancing and yodeling.

I have only watched one half of the show....and I looked forward to the conclusion.

DR JRand58, I am so happy you are enjoying it! Wait until the Emperor Joseph II shows up to hunt. I suspect the Morbisch Festival is like the old Jones Beach shows with a huge stage built on the water. I can't imagine how the audience sees anything from such a distance.

No review package today, so I was on my own again.

I began my afternoon with skimming through today's THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. Adam had some scenes, and, of course, Nikki had to talk about what she saw in other scenes (not with Adam, however). But no Rafe and no Phillip.

Then I watched another VERONICA MARS episode. I did remember seeing this episode before but I didn't remember the identity of the guilty party in the little mystery of the episode. Paris Hilton was the guest star. Not a good actress, but better than some of her contemporaries have been when they've guest starred on various shows.

Then I began watching THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, but I didn't have the regular soundtrack turned on. Instead I'm listening to the audio commentary with Angela Lanbsury. I want her to talk about her Oscar nomination and what it was like going to the ceremony, but so far, the nominations has only been mentioned in passing, that she along with the art direction was nominated and that Harry Strandling won for the extraordinary cinematography. I had never noticed all the deep focus work in this movie until I saw it on this DVD.

(I previously had only the VHS tape wich might not have shown off the photography quite so splendidly as this upconverted DVD is doing.)

I"m not sure if you fast forwarded thru the end. But my tv's guide had this listing (which i don't normally read) which said "this week deacon sharpe comes to town".

Now this name means nothing to me. But yesterday that guy who is framing daniel (and who met with victoria) is deacon sharpe. ANd they showed the previews where he met amber and something was fishy. So i typed in the name and apparently he was a big character on The Bold & the Beautiful (are we supposed to know this?).

He had me on a med that may cause muscle damage and muscle cramps and she took me off the drug. Since then, my leg cramps and bad right shoulder, the reason I was in physical therapy last autumn, have gone away. the blood tests are checking the drug level in my system; she's trying to flush it out. I really like this lady a lot.

That's very good news, Larry!

I think it's funny that every time the chorus gathers around Sammy, the people closest to him will crouch a bit...and a couple people will squat down to be lower than (the very small) Sammy. :)

And I didn't know that Doug Henning was in this!

Thank you.  He said with the soft boot on his foot and ankle the stationary bike didn’t hurt at all & the movement didn’t turn it.  I think more difficult is keeping off of it at home.  We have out of town company arriving in a few hours & there was lots of work to do inside & out.  At least he didn’t have to push a lawn mower & said the riding mower was ok.

I'm off to be a speaker at the Sioux City Human Rights Commission's first "Coffee Talk" at Meet Virginia coffee shop.  Our topic is Immigration.  I have no idea how well attended this will be.  It's being organized by an Americorp volunteer.  She said she wants me to explain immigration law in 10 minutes, lol.  Yeah right.   It will be fun. I've done several presentations so I can make the points pretty quickly and leave the rest to the Q and A

I learned tonight that because of human trafficking, Phoenix has the second highest kidnapping rate in the world.   Be careful out there.     Of course the victims are largely people who paid coyotes to bring them into the country and are now being held for ransom

I had a fun evening of viewing.

First I finished THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY. Angela finally did talk a little bit about the Oscar nomination. She said she was floored to get it, totally unexpected. (No comment about losing to Anne Revere who played her mother in NATIONAL VELVET).

They didn't find a perfect print of DORIAN for the transfer, but most of it looked splendid, and the Technicolor inserts were certainly effective.

Hmmm, I'll see if they have any coffee cups or something with the name on it. They had lots of fun t shirts, but none that said "Meet Virginia" .  I got one that says "Iowans:  the Few, The Proud, The Extremely Attractive"     They had another that said "Sioux City, the best thing North of Omaha and South of Sioux Falls"   LOL  The best thing is the t-shirt I bought is a medium and it fits!

This is re: thurs US Y&R so don't read if you haven't watched (for DR Jose, unless he doesn't care)

If you are a CBS Soap Opera Fan, you would know that since Amber's character actually started on "The Bold and the Beautiful", and she's made some "guest apperances" back "B&B" over the years. -Much like Sheila (who I keep expecting to come back someday) and Lauren.

*Do any of the other networks have any characters that crossover from show to show?

DR Jane - Not to sound too alarmist, but a friend of mine recently had a similar "bruise" on his foot.  He let it go for a while thinking it would heal, but finally went in to see a doctor when he could no longer fit his foot into his shoes.  It turned out that he had blod clot.  If Keith is feeling even just a tad of numbness or tingling, he really should get it checked out ASAP.

On a related note....

bk - Does Amazon allow you to list books before they're published, available. If so, would you be able to list your latest book now, and have the blurbs included in the listing?

I'm sure melissa/ade and brandon/janette will be safe. And there is no way they are gonna ditch kayla or phillip's partner (my mind just blanked on her name). So i guess it depends if randi/even are in B3. I think i would get rid of her (i really like kaitlin).

As for the guys i would get rid of kayla's partner (kaono sp?).

Well... Even last year's tour ended up including more than the Top Ten finalists...

Jose, the publisher does all the amazon stuff - I'll ask.

And once you get the book listed, then you can post the link via Twitter and Facebook.  -And I did just check Amazon, and there are a slew of "Soon To Be Released" titles.  Although, I'm guessing you'd probably have to establish some sort of official release date.  -Which, as always, is subject to change.

So...

I had a wonderful breakfast and catch-up session with my friend, Chris.  He and his partner are flying out to Seattle tomorrow for the Rosie Cruise, so after breakfast, I helped him run some of his pre-trip errands.  One of his errands included a trip to Barnes & Noble to pick up some travel guides for Germany.  He'll be heading to Frankfurt to co-star in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire in August.

Then...

I met up with my cousin, Kristine.

We had a wonderful time today.  Not only is she a Fellow Foodie, but she also likes to take lots of pictures, and she has an iPhone too.

We basically walked around midtown for about eight hours: Grand Central, lunch at Macy's, Times Square, late afternoon desserts at Landmarc, Central Park, the Fifth Avenue Apple Store, FAO Schwarz, Rockefeller Plaza, Magnolia Bakery... And then we met up with her "new friend" and the new friend's friend, and hung out at McGee's for some libations and conversation.

It really was a good day. :)

Goodnight.
