Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both down and dirty, and now it is time for you to post until the down and dirty cows come home.

Just heard from Grant that tomorrow is cancelled.  He wants to move to Sunday - I can do it if it's early and I leave by two-thirty, but it's really sort of annoying that Sunday will now be a non-stop work day.

Most beautifully photographed movie?

There are so many.

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA comes immediately to mind.

Also RYAN'S DAUGHTER, DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE SEARCHERS.

For B&W, I'd have to go with CASABLANCA and CITIZEN KANE.

BK,

I suggested that you try what your tech guy did with the Blu-ray player back when you first described the problem, and I wish you had heeded my suggestion. It would have saved the guy a trip and you some anguish.

BTW, I do just the opposite of you in regard to my sound decoding. I use bitstream audiophile on all my discs (I prefer the receiver do the decoding; that is one of their primary functions) unless the Blu-ray has a secondary PIP audio track which demands that the player do the audio decoding.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The first thing that came to my mind was the Disney "Grand Canyon" film. I remember watching it a couple of times in when I was in grade school - and in different grade schools, in fact. The Grand Canyon, the Ferde Grofé's score... WOW!  -And I'm still sort of surprised that I haven't seen the Grand Canyon in person yet.

And some of the amazing wide shots in Jet Li's "Hero" are also popping into my head right now.

And the opening sequence of "The Sound of Music".

DR JMK - left out YOUR bio?  After all THIS pre production?  Wow!

I remember when that happened to me on a production of A Chorus Line in Maryland.  I was originally brought on just to "help" the musical director since he was finishing up another gig during the first two weeks of rehearsal.  Well, it turned out that meant teaching about 80% of the show to the cast.  Including the Montages.  And then I was asked to play in the pit for the run.  Well...

Opening night, I head out to the lobby an hour before curtain to grab a program.  I'm not listed on the credits page... That's OK.  I'm not listed in the "Thank You's".... Umm...  Then I find that I'm not even listed with the orchestra - and what's the first thing you hear in A Chorus Line?!?!?  Well...

I happened to walk by the director, and she noticed that I didn't look too happy.  I just handed her the program and said, "Look...".  She started apologizing profusely for the oversight.  She was still making the rounds of the opening night crowd, but she said she would take care of it.  At half hour, I made another pass through the lobby since I had some friends who were coming to the see the show that night.  On all the little portable signs that were set up at each entrance to the theatre a "Special Thank You To..." was posted, and the following night, they had a separate program insert made up for me.

*Needless to say, the musical director/conductor ended up buying me my post-show drinks and dinner for the duration of the run. ;)

It's starting to get hot outside, I already had fun this morning driving the other car to keep the battery charged.  If I can afford to transfer ownership over and pay for a year of insurance this Saturday (the 40 day probate will be over) it will be my weekend car.   I forgot how much fun a stick shift car can be.

But I'm back inside the apartment and I will not allow myself to stop today until the rest of the boxes are gone through and put away.  I can't live in a maze anymore, need my open space to think.

It all has to do with what happened last Sunday.  The chumpism comes from trying to remain nice despite what's in front of me.  It's okay most of the time - but sometimes people just baffle me and I'm afraid that in this case that's not a good approach.

From ocregister.com

Though Disney officials say there have probably been thousands of real wedding proposals at Disneyland, this one was acted out by members of Disneyland’s musical and parade performing cast.

“The video was very popular,” said Disney spokeswoman Suzi Brown. “We thought a ’spontaneous musical’ would be a fun way to get the message out about celebrating at Disneyland Resort while highlighting our summer offerings. The response has been great. People love it.”

The idea was to get the video — basically an extended commercial for Disneyland — on the Web through the DisneyParks YouTube channel and have it travel virally around the Internet through re-posting on other YouTube users’ channels, social networking sites, e-mail and social link-sharing sites like digg.

So far, it seems to be working: posted last month on the DisneyParks YouTube channel, it’s gotten more than 700,000 views; re-posted on another user’s site, it has well over 100,000 views.  The video  has more than 2,500 “diggs,” as in the number of times users recommended the video on the digg site.

As of this post, the video views will shoot up even more — we linked to it, so it must be working, right?

The trouble is, all those views and recommendations don’t necessarily translate to people visiting the park.

“You really have to approach viral marketing as an experiment,”  said Greg Witt, the creative director for Premise Immersive Marketing. “You can do really cool viral stuff for 5 or 10K. The barriers to entry are low… but this is an emerging medium and it’s moving at light speed. Nobody has a metric on it.”

In other words, you can tell viewers watched your video 700,000 times, and that’s it. It’s not like putting an ad in the newspaper for your restaurant and the day it runs you have 50 extra customers in your restaurant.

“The value of viral marketing is when something really seems authentic and has some entertainment value to it,” Witt said. “When people want to share it and it doesn’t seem so corporate.”

But wait a minute — Disney’s wedding proposal video doesn’t say specifically that it’s staged, though Disney posted it on the company’s own channel. Is that deceitful?

“It’s more stealthy,” Witt said. “That’s OK if there’s a good sarcastic and snarkiness to it. The stuff that is really, really fabricated… It’s the same as making a really bad TV commercial.

“If you can come with an emotional response and wrap your brand around that, young people are big supporters of that and they don’t mind being marketed to like that.”

The proposal video is Disney’s second foray into viral video marketing — the first was posted in January to promote Disney’s “Celebrate!” promotion, the lynchpin of which is a deal that lets guests into the park free on their birthdays.

Last night's "Romeo & Juliet" was a very good show.  It lasted exactly three hours. :D A couple of weeks ago, we had a booth at the Olympia Pride Event and handed out about 500 flyers to our show, but we didn't get 500 tickets sold. ::) But last night, we had about six or seven older gay couples who all came to see the show together (out of about 30-35 people total).  They loved it!  Afterward, we had a party at one girl's house, but several of us went to Applebee's for a late dinner, first.  That was a good thing to do.  We were all very hungry and party food (what little there was) would not have been adequate.  Anyway, we have a performance tonight (and another party), then tomorrow's matinee, then we strike the set and maybe another party(!), and then it's all over!

And finally...back to reality. :)

Next I watched another VERCONICA MARS episode. This was the one where Veronica decides she's going to investigate Lily's murder in earnest. We need to expand the membership; people come and go like Grand Hotel but a nice shot of new blood would be great. Maybe the Kritzerland site should invite people to check out the site?

By the way, BK, you got a lovely compliment on castrecl today from Tim Willis.

I'm watching the Joe Hisaishi concert again, this time with 5.1 - the first time I watched it I didn't realize the default was two-channel stereo.  What a difference!  The entire menu is, of course, in Japanese, but I used the audio button on the player to select the PCM 5.1 track, which is amazing.

Though Disney officials say there have probably been thousands of real wedding proposals at Disneyland, this one was acted out by members of Disneyland’s musical and parade performing cast.

Thank you for the truth regarding the video.  I would like to have known when I was watching it.  Was the one you posted for real?

If the idea was to entice people to visit the parks they might have offered wedding proposal options along with the video.

TOD:  I loved Gordon Willis' work on the Godfather movies, although he is one of the people you have to thank for his influence on the current crop of movie makers making all period films yellow.

I loved what Laszlo Kovacs did for the whole look of "New York, New York"  and his work on "Peggy Sue Got Married, " "Paper Moon," etc.

"Enchanted April,"  "Brief Encounter," "Sunrise," "One from the Heart"

Oh, it was produced by the same people so I believe it was made up too!

I LOVED "PONYO On The Cliff" (Richards!!) ... it is VERY different in storyline (More children oriented) that his previous work!

Was watching some clips from The Carpenters' heydays: such nice musicality!

I just checked my mail and I found a "Sorry We Missed You" notice in my mail box, even though I am sitting right here.  What is even more galling is that it is marked as Final Notice, even though it is the first notice I have received in weeks.  However, the strangest thing of all is that this package I have to sign for is my copy of TERRY AND THE PIRATES from Oldies.com.

So, I have to sign for a $9.99 DVD, while last week they left a $150.00 leather bound autographed book at my front door, while I was at work.  It boogles the mind.

I stopped in the furniture store where I bough my bed 3 years ago and told them it's sagging in the middle (no fat jokes here) they said it has a 10 year warranty, but the company went out of business.  Then the manager said he'd call me at 6:00 PM and stop over to "inspect" the bed so they can try to get it replaced for me.

he hasn't called and it's 6:32 PM.  My guess is he forgot.  Anyway, i'm glad I stopped in.. it may take awhile but it looks like I'll get a brand new mattress for no cost

Now I will shower.  :)

DR Cilla good luck you do get the new mattress.

I'm sure I would think twice about some of my posts if family members were here.

the manager called about 8:00 and asked if I was still here. He said they had a lot of people coming in so he couldn't leave early.  He took one look and said "stop in tomorrow and pick out a new mattress, as long as it's the same price range, it's free".   cool.  He also told me that the pillow top beds sag in the middle more than a little firmer mattress.

I am very happy about this.  It hadn't occurred to me to check and see if it was under warranty.  I'm glad I got it at the store I use a lot.  It's the same store Jen from Design Star used when she remodeled her sister's living room in Sioux city

I was suppose to go to a pool party tonight but aside from the fact that it's actually too cool to swim plus we are expecting a thunderstorm, I think I might have gotten a little dehydrated working in my front yard today.  I'm just gonna stay in and watch THE MOUSE THAT ROARED on TCM (a movie on which I believe North Korea is basing it's current foreign policy.)

THE MOUSE THAT ROARED was the first play I was in, playing Professor Kokintz my freshman year of high school.

I was one of the WACs.  Our production was one of those nightmare stories.

I'm kind of laughing DR TCB as being hearing impaired really isn't an explanation for not getting your attention unless you are also hearing impaired. Having a dog comes in handy when you don't hear the doorbell.

The reason I mentioned that is because I think she has trouble communicating with and understanding me due to my moustache.  I am sure she finds it easier just to leave the slip in the box than to have to talk with me.

I have no hearing impairment, but I rarely know what the hell you're saying, Dad!

Well, perhaps you can get your wife to translate.

I assume you're speaking of the new bed... it really is nice. The company that made the bed went out of business, so I'm sure they could not honor the warranty if they wanted to.

Well, THE MOUSE THAT ROARED wasn't the knee slapped I remembered it being and in fact I was taken aback by how cheap it looked over all. Alec Baldwin mentioned at the beginning that the director also did a lot of television work--I'm betting that included quite a few episodes of BATMAN.

I ended up watching last week's epiasode of ROYAL PAINS and it was indeed a nice showcase for Evan's character. I do like this series quite a lot and it's so god seeign a lot of New York acors in it. I used to see David Alan Basche occasionally in the drug store on the corner of Broadway and 81st; he was in a play by my friend Jeff Baron. It was also a nice showcase for James Rebhorn, not a friend but someone I've seen for years at Drama Book Shop and several wonderful productions like DINNER AT EIGHT at Lincoln Center.

I've been reading some old Cinema magazines - very interesting reading, especially the 1969 issue which has a large supplement about how this new- fangled home entertainment world is going to change the way we live.  And articles about all the coming any day now video tape machines (about five different companies with five different and completely incompatible machines and technologies - sound familiar).  Really interesting.

How well I remember that when I finally decided I was going to get a video recorder of my own, there were different choices, and I got a bunch of brochures describing them. The VHS and Betas were both 1/2" tape casettes, but, but seems like I recall a JVC that used 3/4" tape casettes, and there was even a reel-to-reel tape machine for the home.

I did end up with an RCA Selectavision which was VHS: I chose the eventual winner of that format war.

I watched THE SAND PEBBLES on Blu-ray this evening, all three hours of it. It's too long, but you do come to care about the characters, and the second half certainly gets the juices flowing. Glad to see it again.

The Blu-ray is a good transfer, but certainly not as striking as some transfers I've seen. I have no idea what kind of shape the elements they had to work with were in. Also, I thought for some reason it was Todd-AO, but it was Panavision.

The score sounded marvelous in DTS-HD MA 5.1.

In other news...  In short:

I met up with my friend, John, for lunch at Manhattan Bagel.  Then Central Park, Petrossian, The Parker Meridien (Burger Joint), Steinway Hall (where we sort of got kicked out?), MoMA, Columbus Circle.

Then I headed on down to Shubert Alley for Broadway Barks (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/130991-Broadway_Barks_for_a_Good_Cause_July_11_in_Shubert_Alley).  Bernadette Peters, Mary Tyler Moore, Angela Lansbury, Rupert Everett, Greg Jbara, Michael Cerveris, Gavin Creel, Will Swenson, Audra McDonald, etc., etc., etc.  A lots and lots of cute dogs and cats.

Then some snacks at Junior's with some friends who were also at Broadway Barks, then back up Broadway to Fairway for some grocery shopping.  And since I happened to be nearby, a stop at Salumeria Rosi (http://www.salumeriarosi.com) for some prosciutto and parmacotto and Grom (http://www.grom.it/old_site/eng/) for some Raspberry and Peach sorbetto. :)  -I guess I was just in the mood for some Italia.

Is there a story about being kicked out of Steinway Hall?

Not really.

I just think today was a "bad day" for one of the sales clerks/secretaries.  They had one of their "Saturdays at Steinway" this morning, and when we got there, we could hear a couple of people trying out pianos, and it looked like they were gearing up for a studio recital in one of the salons.  I'm guessing she was hoping for some peace and quiet today.  She was "kind" when asked us to leave, but she phrased it interestingly:

"You play beautifully, but I'm afraid we will all have to leave now and clear out."

???

IN THE FRENCH STYLE was a most intriguing Jean Seberg vehicle.  Dialog - courtesy Irwin Shaw - and some very handsome leading men (Viscount) Phillipe Forquet and Stanley Baker.

Nice Paris locations, and a score that was only wrong some of the time.

Stanley Baker as American (!) newspaperman Walter:  I have to go to Tripoli for three days.
Seberg as American model/painter/partygirl: You're never around long enough for a girl to get tired of you.
Baker: My main attraction.

Seberg in bed with her first lover: So how old are you?
Phillippe Forquet as Guy: Sixteen.  I lied.
Seberg: Why?
Forquet: If I had told you the truth, you would never have looked at me.
Seberg: No wonder you only drank Coca Cola at dinner.

Addison Powell as Jean's father:  I want you to come home. Paris is an education, and you have to know when to quit school.
Jean to her father:  Fathers and fellows look for different things in a girl.

And much more......too bad there has been no release of this film.  Jean is so beautiful, Baker is handsome in his simian way, and Forquet in his debut is nearly if not MORE beautiful than Jean.

Full Monty at Paper Mill was quite excellent, plus there was a talkback in which Stritch joined the cast in answering questions.

I am trying to come up with a children's story for tomorrow. It has been a very busy week.

What about the story of a young girl who walks and texts at the same time and falls ....

Oh, never mind! ;)

I am now back from an ever so delightful Chinese dinner with Bruce Pomahac at Hunan Park on 95th and Columbus, which was his choice. I think the Silk Road Palace is equally as good, but Hunan Park did have some interesting choices on their menu that the Silk Road Palace does not.

I think I shall read my mail, watch COPS, and then watch something on DVD. I'm not sure yet what that will be.

Ooh, Hunan Park. Haven't been there in years.  -And I keep meaning to make a return visit to the classic - and somewhat over-priced - Shun Lee.  Just for ole times sake.

What was the best question and the best answer at the talk back?  Did YOU ask a question?

Kritzerland has two followers.

For your next Tweet, you should include the direct link to the recording that you're "advertising".  Maybe something like this:

Only 150... 149... 148... copies of "Topkapi" left! http://kritzerland.com/topkapi.htm

Or...

Yes, cast album collectors, there is an "Evening Primrose" http://kritzerland.com/eveprim.htm

It is 5:31, I must leave in 45 minutes, and I have not even showered yet today.  (TMI?).  I did however get caught up on literally weeks of paperwork (hence my lack of personal hygiene)--I had stacks of paper going back to late May/early June, expense-income statements to finish, and the like, and those are ALL DONE.  Plus I reviewed the lamentable ECHELON CONSPIRACY and also got through one HELEN WEST mystery and started DIARY OF A NOBODY.

Now I will shower.  :)

Maybe you shouldn't shower until the company reprints the program with a full-page devoted to your picture and bio?

;)

*Alas, I've worked with a conductor or two - and a couple of actors - who tended not to shower until after the show.  Of course, sometimes they showed up at the theatre after a workout at the gym. :-\

the manager called about 8:00 and asked if I was still here.

Did the manager offer to help you check out your old and potential new mattress with you? ;)

Jrand - I did not ask a question, but:

Best question:  Had the actors ever made a suggestion where the director said "no" (Of course, the director of this FULL MONTY happens to be Paper Mill's artistic director, so would they air it in public, but still  a good question-)

Best answer (and I summarize):  When asked what her favorite thing to do other than acting was, Stritch said something like I don't want to answer that, but thank you for asking the question!  (Maybe ya hadda be there. but it was very funny.)

Most surprising comment by Stritch, at least at first hearing, and I paraphrase - that no one should ever have to do eight performances a week, and she added that that having eight performances is only about money.

DR FJL - That's good to hear.  I really wanted to make it out there to see this production, but... yadda-yadda-yadda... Especially since I love me some Michael Rupert and Wayne Wilcox... And Stritchy, of course.

I'd forgotten that Jeanette (Stritch's character) didn't appear until almost an hour into the show (Much like Tony Curtis' Osgood in the Some Like it Hot/Sugar musical tour, where he was abpve the title).

Very funny response from Ms Stritch....which reminds me of her comment after Michael Bennett got mad at everybody, jumped onstage, and demonstrated exactly how he wanted the COMPANY to do "Side by Side."

That's great, Michael....she said.....but you only had to do it once....we have to do it eight times a week.
