Today, July 13, 2009, is the 25th anniversary of the film which featured Robert Preston's final performance (that is, The Last Starfighter).

Our entire database is down and we cannot do any work. I just got back from the Greenmarket where I purchased apples, peaches, nectarines, cherries, cherry tomatoes and apple-raspberry juice.
I took my purchases home (one of the advantages of living half a block from the office) and on my way back to "work" I stopped at the coffee cart and got a large coffee, milk no sugar.
Now I'm visiting a certain Web site.

As for the border scene in The Untouchables it gave me a few chuckles. As it was so wrong. At that time the maple leaf was not a symbol. Canadians at that time were still very British. The maple leaf would not become a symbol until 1964 when we had an official flag and not the union jack,

Private reading of my play will be this Saturday.
And as I was driving home last night on the Turnpike, the final two scenes came to me. The actor who I am working with really likes the play and this is the first time I am working with him. So I am hoping this is a good omen

For the most part, I like THE UNTOUCHABLES, but there are 2 things that annoy me about it.
1. The movie has no sense of a passage of time. Ness and his people worked years on this case, yet the movie conveys the idea that everything happens in 2-3 weeks.
2. Why did they have to name that character "Frank Nitti"? Couldn't they have called him "Joe Shmuck" or something else?
Nitti was a real person. He was not killed by Ness or his men. In fact, he ran the Chicago mob after Capone went to prison.
Dramatic license is one thing, but changing hard historical facts is something else. That kind of carelessness really turns me off on a movie.

Best career advice I ever got probably came from my mentor, my theatre porfessor, Charles Dickens (yes, his real name), which was: know how to tie a tie, have a pair of black dress shoes, and be a good company person. The latter part of that advice, of course, was the most important. Which basically meant keep your nose clean and do your job, don't engage in backstage backbiting and intrigue, don't go wrecking company cars or trashing apartments when on the road.
I have always tried to adhere to this advice and found it kept me employable and re-hireable.

We've already had two different shwoers this morning. One happened before I got up, but the road was wet when I went out to get the newspaper. The second happened about an hour ago and lasted a good thirty minutes. None of them cooled things off. Another 90-day today. Ugh!

It really should not have taken me so long to get through three movies.

Most advantageous advice I ever got was from my real estate agent when I bought my house. He suggested that if I could afford it, go for a 15-year mortgage instead of a 30-year one. Best advice I ever got since I paid off my house before I retired and was able to squirrel away money that would have gone toward the mortgage and use it to make retirement much more comfortable.

One of my favorite bits of advice I give is that there are two ways to approach a problem - positively and negatively - the former will at least address the problem and make you see various solutions or, at the very least, at least SEE the problem. The latter gets you nothing. In fact, as hard as it is sometimes, I vote for no negativity ever.

Back from the long jog (boy is it hot out, even at ten-fifteen when I did the jog), and then shipping a few packages and then doing some errands. More to do later, but I've now begun crafting the lyric to what I hope will be a better song for the character of Eunice. It's try number nine, I believe, but I do think I finally, after all these years, figured out what the song should be about.

Last night (actually, very early this morning), I came home from the show (IT'S OVER!!) and wrote a post, but my Internet connection was lost...fortunately, I had the foresight to save the post in a Word document, but I then forgot to post it after the connection came back. ::) I'll go home for lunch and repost it then.

Rain has subsided at least for the present, and it's warm and sticky outside. The sun is shining, too, but there are still dark patches in the sky, so we may not have seen the last of the rain today.

I am enjoying the free time, and it's certainly pleasant being able to pick and choose what I want to watch. I have to say, though, that I'm suffering a bit from this recent lapse of work projects. You see, I LIKE to work. Doing something like this which I love is really a gift, so when the gift is removed, even temporarily, it's throwing me a bit for a loop.
I'm sure in another week or two, I'll be up to my eyeballs in review material and wondering why I was so crazy not to enjoy the time I had off, but right now, I'm ready to go back to work.

When I got in from lunch, I watched last night's MURDER IS EASY. They've added Miss Marple into the story (in the original novel, none of Christie's regular characters served as the detective). The movie certainly isn't hurt by having Miss Marple solve the crime rather than Luke Fitzwilliam who solves it in the book (and in the CBS-TV version of the book which starred Bill Bixby as Luke), but I can't see that it was HELPED any by the addition either.
BTW, I think this is one of the easiest of all the Christie mystery novels to solve. In this case, murder really WAS easy!

Next, I watched today's THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. Phillip finally revealed his BIG secret to the rest of the family. Adam was on hand, too, but in a plot that hasn't picked up much steam yet.

Next I scanned through ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Fish and Kyle were both on hand (not together). Lots of insinuations about a murky past for Fish without any details yet. I'm sure they're coming....

I started watching the next episode of VERONICA MARS, but only got halfway through it. It was the first season's Christmas episode with Veronica trying to solve the mystery of the stolen poker money. I do think I saw this one; I think I know who stole it, but we'll see if I'm remembering correctly when I go back downstairs.

So, send lots of vibes and xylophones and I have the feeling we could be doing this either later this year or very early next year. I'd come in to direct, and we'd be allowed to bring in some Equity folks on a guest contract - and, if I wanted, I can bring my own musical director. Who knows what will ultimately be, but it was a wonderful and heartening conversation.

I had a cart with an errant wheel (is there any other kind/), and I managed to crash right into a round table that was piled high with a pyramid of sorts of watches. Needless to say, they collapsed. Zach quietly turned to me and whispered, "Walk away from the crime scene--walk away from the crime scene." :)

When I met Richard, we decided to bring my load back to the hotel and taxi up to the Weber Grill Restaurant (http://www.webergrillrestaurant.com/locations/chicago.html) for a late lunch - it was great! We then got a Gale shuttle back to McCormick Place, a different route which I hoped would take us along the lakeshore. Instead we took the McCormick Place Bus Tunnel, which is down among the subway trains. Still no lake...
Anyway, we only had about an hour before the exhibits closed, but it was a fruitful hour for me. I sat down to listen to a vendor spiel and, in the drawing at the end, I won the door prize - a MuVo V100 mp3 player!
On the way home, we spent some time in the spectacular Harold Washington Library Center (http://www.chipublib.org/branch/details/library/harold-washington/), Chicago Public's main library. It restores my faith that not ALL urban main libraries have to be dumps.
From there, we stopped at Garret Popcorn to buy our "dinner" for later and got panhandled on our way out the door.

I went to the Post Office today to pick up my apparently priceless version of TERRY AND THE PIRATES. As usual, there was a group outside of the Post Office from one of the more fringe political parties (I think I know which one, but since I am not positive, I won't say).
On the front of their card table display was a photo of President Obama with an Adolph Hitler moustache. Now granted, I am a Democrat; but if it was a photo of George Bush I would have been equally offended. I had to mentally refrain myself from punching out the two guys who were manning the display - and I am not a violent person.
Three hours later, I am still furious.

I was walking around earlier, and had a sudden allergy attack - or at least an allergic reaction to something. I started feeling very itchy, and watery-eyed. So, I ran into the nearest drug store, and bought some Chlortrimetron. It was my first real allergy symptom in a long time, so more of annoyance than anything else.

I'm currently reading an uncorrected proof of a book that should be released in January. One of our house guest autographed it for us & brought it as a house gift.

Stitches is one of the ARCs, so it's a softcover. It's a graphic novel - have you ever read one of those? The only one I've read is Cancer Vixen. David Small (Stitches) grew up in Detroit on a street like mine, lined with elm trees that formed a cathedral over the street, and in a house that, from the drawings in the book, looked exactly like the one where I grew up.

It's very similar to the situation in July 2004 when I ended up on crutches for several weeks. DR Ben may remember that.
Tomorrow I will try to see Dr Munshi about the problem. I've taken Tylenol PM and Tylenol and I hope it knocks me out because the pain is intense and I am very uncomfortable. I'm also very sleepy.

I just woke up from an antihistamine-induced nap. Of course, since I'm awake now, but I'm still feeling a bit drowsy, so I think I'm gonna go ahead and head to bed now. Or something like that. -Although, lately, I keep finding myself waking up at 6:15 automatically. In any case...

I began my evening watching two more VERONICA MARS episodes so I could clear disc 3 out of the player.
The first one was a good episode where Keith had to help Sheriff Lamb (now starring as Adam on Y&R) with a local serial rape case.

The second involved Veronica getting framed for manufacturing fake IDs at school and her going into surveillance mode to find out who framed her. This was also the poignant episode where Mac found out about her real parents and being switched at birth. Very moving episode.

Next I watched the last of the Warner Homefront Collection - HOLLYWOOD CANTEEN. I had never seen this all the way through, so it was good to see people I didn't even know were in it: Jack Benny, Kitty Carlisle. It was too long, and color would have helped, but it was still entertaining.

Then I watched tonight's episode of THE CLOSER. This was, I guess, the comic episode of the season. There was TOO MUCH SCREAMING in the episode, not just from that dimwit woman suspect but from the "fake" detective and Chief Pope and, well, just about everyone.
The case was good, and the detective impersonator was SUCH a novel touch for the show that I did enjoy it, but I wish they could have somehow toned down that overly loud approach to their frustration.

If I remember correctly it is still ok as long as he doesn't take too much in a 24 hour period. If I'm in pain I take 2 extra strength Tylenol's per dose. I just try not to keep taking it every 4 hours.

The configuration that we used (in the round) had about 80-90 seats. I never heard the exact number, but we never needed all the seats. :-\
Anyway, yesterday, we had the last performance of "Romeo & Juliet." It was a good ending to a fun experience. I had a ball (an I Had a Ball reference! ;)) and will miss working with these people on this show. We struck the set after our matinee performance, cleaned the dressing rooms and the theater, loaded up everything into the truck and/or our cars and went out for pizza! About 25 of us went to a local pizza place and just unwound and ate and talked and said most of our good-byes and gave and received lots of hugs. That was a very good way to end things. But it wasn't quite over. We had to unload the truck of all the stuff that TAO was keeping. That took a little bit o' time. THEN we said our final good-byes with lots more hugs and I got home at about 10:45 p.m.
And that was my day, yesterday. :)
