TOD

Can't say that I have a favorite, but I do have a small collection of first releases (not necessary first printings) of the Michael Shayne detective novels. As they were reissued over the years the illustration became in my opinion became more artistically bankrupt concluding with "cheesecake: photography of women (obviously) posed in a way that very often had no relation to the story inside.

In the past I have shown my favorite paperback covers, so this time I will show my newest obsession interest, a series of children's books from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, most by author Ruth Dixon and all with photos by Harry Whittier Frees. the pictures just make me smile.

Emmy nominations were announced this morning and there were BIG surprises:

No best comedy nominations for UGLY BETTY, THE BIG BANG THEORY, TWO AND A HALF MEN, or DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Instead, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS and WEEDS and FAMILY GUY and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER landed in the category.

No best drama nominations for GREY'S ANATOMY, THE SHIELD, RESCUE ME, '24,' THE MENTALIST, BURN NOTICE, THE CLOSER, or TRUE BLOOD. Instead, only two network shows (LOST and HOUSE) are represented with the other nominees coming from cable: BIG LOVE, MAD MEN, DEXTER, DAMAGES, BREAKING BAD.

Nice to see Jim Parsons finally win a nomination (Best Comedy Actor) but I was very disappointed for the actors in THE SHIELD, all of whom did award-winning work and who lost out to less deserving nominees.

DR TCB - we were referring the June Kenney star of ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, TEENAGE DOLL, and SORORITY GIRL.....oh and CAT BURGLAR.....who has some residuals at SAG.....  She has not provided them with a current address....

Allison's case is to be expected, she's been dead since 1977....Ms. Kenney is a mystery.  All books that contain interviews with her co stars say they enjoyed working with her, she was very serious about her acting.....but no one knows where she is.

In the meantime, I'm currently camping out in a Starbucks where...

I'm sitting next to what I thought was a "Broadway publicist" and her client.  Well, it turns out that "she" is a theatrical agent and "he" is an actor.

"She" does not know anything about the current crop of shows or actors.  However, "he" does.  "She" keeps reading down the list of breakdowns, and keeps asking "What show is this? Who is that?"  Thankfully(?), "he" knows all those answers.  Of course, if she just happened to go to the homepage of Playbill.com - and her laptop is on the table - she would know the answers to half of the questions she's asking.  However...

"She" keeps assuring "him" that she will send him for the right projects.  Of course, I just heard her laugh out loud at the title of Superior Donuts - "I would never send you in for something with that title!" - and she mentioned a production of August Wilson's Fences that she thought her client would be right for. "He" is in his mid-50s, white and Jewish.  :-\

Since I watch very little network TV, the Emmy's don't mean a lot to me, but really--six to seven nominees for each category?

Between this and the ten Best Picture nominees for the Oscars and the Tony Awards Committee cutting out the critics in voting, this is truly the year of dumbing down entertainment awards.

Has anyone seen the Jim Carrey comedy YES MAN?  I got it from the library and will watch it tonight.

My library started getting most of the new movies coming out. And they are free (although $2/day if you don't return them, you get 3 days).

The only thing is you can't reserve. But you can suggest movies that they don't have. And if you do that they get put on the list to get them first.

And if you go online and see that a movie you want is in, they will put it aside for you to pick up.

I guess I've sort of flipped my usual daily routine.  Usually, I head of the apartment around 2:00 or 3:00 to run some errands, for some work and/or just to get out of the apartment.  But now I'm back at my apartment after heading out earlier today, and I think I may stay in for the rest of the day.  Although, I may pop back down to Columbus Circle later to check out the "Break Out In Song" "flash-mob.

Pictures appreciated DR JOSE.

DR JRand - Well, I snapped an iPhone pic of the crowd, but that was about it. It was an interesting line-up of shows today at Bryant Park: The Little Mermaid, 9 to 5, The Toxic Avenger, and Pure Country.  Alas, it appears whoever ran the sound at The Tony's was also running the sound today at Bryant Park.  You know it's bad when you can't hear Allison Janney (or "Jane-y" according to the announcer), Megan Hilty and Stephanie J. Block over the backing track.

*And I wasn't sure it was such a smart move to send out one of the female cast members from Pure Country to sing a quiet ballad... While she held her music... And she also had to hold her music when she sang the duet.

In general, on the average and as a rule, I tend to avoid all things Jim Carrey, even when they air on TV.

Life seems much more livable that way.

But doesn't the fact that you DON'T watch much network TV mean that your opinion is not really based much on the facts?

The fact is that the quality of TV dramatic shows has never been as high or rich, and they could have EASILY filled the deserving nominee slots with ten or more drama series that are truly worthy.

There are fewer comedies that I would say that about, and my own feelings about increasing the Best Picture Oscar nominees to ten is well known (I think it's absurd).

But you don't know what you're talking about in terms of drama series.

When I got in, I started watching THE LOVE BOAT. Because lunch ran late, I only had time for two episodes.

THE LOVE BOAT is great for star watching, but was there ever a more innocuous show that was this immensely popular? Even when they bring up something trendy or controversial such as open marriage, it's handled in such a bland, predictable way that it's not very interesting. A the comedy is mild at best, even though the boisterous laugh track would make you think it's a laugh riot.

The first episode (the one with the open marriage plot) had Barbara Rush and Peter Marshall experimenting. Ray Bolger and Martha Raye got paired together. And Tina Louise played one of Bernie Kopell's many ex-wives. She latches on to Lyle Waggoner.

The second episode had Bobby Van and Elaine Joyce offering Gopher (Fred Grandy) a job as a hotel manager. Abe Vigoda is paired with Nancy Walker while magician Ron Palillo ends up with his brother's female magician assistant.

This one did feature some location filming on board a real cruise ship rather than just the studio mock-ups used on most of the episodes.

What's interesting about book covers is how different the different editions can be.  Here's the first(?) cover of Fredric Brown's "Space On My Hands" from 1953:

And here's a reissue from 1980:

Not in a gazillion years would I have guessed that these are for the same book.  Of course, it's a book of short stories, but still...

Thank you Jack.  I could remember the story of her disappearing, but I couldn't for the life of me remember her name.  And as you said, in Allison's case it is understandable.

As of 7:35pm EST I finished the first draft of the play.

I will work on the play with my actor tomorrow night and do a quick read through before the reading.

It will be Saturday at 3pm, but I don't have the place.

I also found out that today that one of my jokes (I think one of the best) is going to be antiquated. It is a product and the company decided today to change the name. i thought it was an exciting name and it is being change to an ordinary one that many other companies use.

Oh well.

Got to go.

And if Johnny Depp ever plays Barbra playing Carol

(to clarify after Ron's post below, Depp would play Mrs. L, a cross between Mrs. Dolly Levi and Mrs. Nellie Lovett):

Louis:
Well, hello

Mrs L:
Look who's here!

Louis:
Nellie, this is Louis

Mrs. L:
Hello, Louis!

Louis:
Nellie, It's so nice to have you here where you belong

Mrs. L:
I am so glad to be here!

Louis:
You're lookin' swell,

Mrs. L:
Thank you, Louis!

Louis:
Nellie, I can tell

Mrs. L:
Does it show?

Louis:
Nellie
You're still glowin', you're still crowin'
You're still

BOTH:
Oom . . . goin' strong

Louis:
I feel the room swayin'
And that man's slayin'
One of our old favorite chums from way back when

Mrs. L:
I remember him

Louis:
 so,

Mrs. L:
I'm gonna flavor him

Louis:
Show some flair, fellas, find her an empty chair, yeah!

BOTH:
Nellie'll never go avay again . . .

I often find it mind boggling why name changes are done, like Washington Mutual to WaMu, or SciFi to SyFy.

Regarding the latter, I have strong suspicions it was changed to "SyFy" because too many people were referring to it as the [skiff'-ee] channel....and that was because they didn't know better, not because they were just having fun with the abbrieviation "SciFi".

As for WaMu...."Washington Mutual" is a mouthful and sounds really "stuffy" whereas "WaMu" sounds totally cool and hip.

And yes, that is speculation, too, and no, I don't think it's cool and hip....I think it's ludicrous.

But.....whatchagonnado!

Good Evening!

The "Break Out In Song" event down at the Time-Warner Center was fun.  Of course, word had gotten out that "something" was going to happen, so by the time I had gotten there around 5:45, lots of people were already lined up along the balconies, and they had obviously cleared a space in front of Williams-Sonoma for "something".  But still, it was nice.

Today's selection was "If They Could See Me Now", and they had one young woman start it off - just as she had ascended the escalator from Whole Foods, and eventually a whole ensemble had assembled for the final kick line.

I did take some pictures - which I posted on my Facebook page and Twitter feed - and I also recorded some video too.

DR Jose, did you go back for a Champ?

Yes, I did.

And, yes, I did.

;)

*I managed to catch up with their Team/Twitter Leader, and we had a nice discussion about Blue Bunny products being fully introduced in the New York City area.  I was surprised that they brought so many staff from Iowa and Kansas City - most companies would just hire locals.

OH, WOW!  Thanks for posting that, DR Laura!

I believe it was a BBC production, that I don't think ever was officially broadcast stateside.

My DH's phone stuff transferred over with no problem. Mine didn't.

No SIM chip?

Some companies/carriers now allow you to upload your contact lists to their site for back-up purposes, as well as for transferring purposes.  Was that an option for you?

When I heard that they had given out 15,000 cones in just over an hour yesterday, I sort of made sure to get there "early" today.  It was fun watching them give away the ice cream... "Would you like two? How about a couple to take back to your friends, office?" ;)

*Alas, I didn't hang around long enough today to get one of the the t-shirts.  ::)

It is one of my most prized VHS tapes.  And it's a good production, too.  It's a shame, though, that they cut some songs entirely, and many verses of other songs that remain.   :(

But still, I'll take what I can get.      :)        This show is, for me, the ultimate charmer.

I didn't get as many episodes of THE LOVE BOAT watched as I was expecting, mainly because one of them was a two hour "movie" event, and the one I'm on now was broadcast as a 90-minute special. I've only gotten through about 15 minutes of episode 6.

The first episode I watched had Cathy Lee Crosby ditching Randolph Mantooth for his father, Robert Mandan. Roddy McDowell was being persued by Tammy Grimes, and when she finally tired of chasing him, he then got interested and began chasing her. Virginia Graham was also on the episode as a customer in the gift shop.
Title: Re: HIGH INTO THE GUMS

The two hour episode I watched had a gallery of guest stars: Raymond Burr as a drama teacher who had become an alcoholic, Michael Cole as a paraplegic, Kim Darby searching for her mystery lover on the boat, Bob Denver, Chris George, and David Landsberg as high school pals reunited on the boat, John Rubenstein as a draft dodger, and Michael Lembeck and Lisa Hartman as poor men copycats of Travolta and his partner from SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER.
Title: Re: HIGH INTO THE GUMS

The last of the full episodes I watched had Richard Anderson as a former doctor who lost his arm in a wreck with his wife Diana Muldaur behind the wheel, Hans Conreid who offers Capt. Stubing a new job, and the gorgeous Ben Murphy trying to decide between Carol Lynley and Donna Pescow. Dr. Joyce Brothers had a cameo on the episode, too.

In the 15 minutes of the episode of THE LOVE BOAT that I started before shutting the home theater off for the night, the Mills family were guest stars: Hayley, Juliet, and John all playing parts in three different stories. John is Celeste Holm's butler. Also on board are Reggie Jackson (hiding out from fans) and David Hedison as Juliet Mills' ex-husband on board to celebrate their son's birthday.

Argh! All of the plots are fairly trite as far as the way they're handled. I mean, draft dodging is an interesting topic. So is the alcoholism of a popular teacher. But the scripts for the show aren't known for any probing depth or emotional truth. Everything is handled on the surface and wrapped up neatly by the end of the cruise.

Conchatta Ferrell was also on that episode playing an overweight gym teacher, and there were a lot of very un-PC fat jokes during the show that the laugh track was programmed to bust a gut about. These are the kinds of things that really date the show.
