Title: SUB-HUMAN CREEPS
Post by: bk on July 21, 2009, 12:17:14 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes exposed the sub-human creeps for what they are, and now it is time for you to post until the sub-cow cows come home.

And without further ado - the new Kritzerland release.  You know the drill - if you want to pre-pre order this title, simply go to paypal.com and use our paypal address of kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  It's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping.  We're officially announcing on Friday and I'm hoping this will move quickly.

“SHUT UP AND DEAL”

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition CD – the original motion picture soundtracks from two classic Billy Wilder/Jack Lemmon films, The Apartment and The Fortune Cookie.

In 1959, Billy Wilder (along with co-writer I.A.L. Diamond) made movie history with one of the funniest films ever made – Some Like It Hot.  In that film, Jack Lemmon gave a brilliant performance as Jerry/Daphne.  The following year, Wilder and Lemmon struck gold again, this time with The Apartment, a funny, rueful, biting comedy/drama, completely unlike Some Like It Hot.  The film also starred Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray, and Jack Kruschen.  It was a huge success, and garnered an incredible ten Academy Award nominations (including one for Lemmon), and won five, including Best Picture.  Adolph Deutsch, an underrated and really terrific composer, wrote the wonderful and popular score.  However, the score’s well-known main theme was, in fact, by Charles Williams, a British composer, and had been used years earlier in an English film.  That theme, entitled “Jealous Lover” was made so popular by the film that the publisher agreed to re-name it “Theme From The Apartment.”   The music served the film perfectly, and the soundtrack album was hugely popular, as was the Ferrante and Teicher version of the theme.

A few years later, Wilder and Lemmon re-teamed for their fourth film together, The Fortune Cookie, a very funny and, at times, oddly touching film.  Mr. Lemmon turned in another great performance, and this was the breakout film for his co-star, Walter Matthau, who won a well-deserved Oscar for his performance as the deviously devious Whiplash Willie Gingrich (Lemmon and Matthau would, of course, go on to make screen history as The Odd Couple).   For The Fortune Cookie, the composer was Andre Previn, also doing his fourth Wilder film (after One, Two, Three, Irma La Douce, and Kiss Me, Stupid) – in fact, The Fortune Cookie would be Mr. Previn’s last original Hollywood film score.  And what a score it is – sly, beautiful, moody, funny – it has it all.  In fact, it gives the film a surprising depth, and is just further proof of what an amazing film composer Mr. Previn was.

The Apartment and The Fortune Cookie were previously released on CD only as part of a very big and very expensive box set called The MGM SoundtrackTreasury from Film Score Monthly – that set sold out very quickly, so for people who missed it, or may have wanted only one or two scores, it was a lost opportunity.  Therefore, we’re very pleased to bring out this single release of two of the best scores in the set.  We’ve also added a bonus track from the Wilder/Lemmon film, Irma La Douce – the great Andre Previn main title music, which incorporates all the major themes from the film (both by Mr. Previn, and his adaptation of Marguerite Monnot’s music from the original stage musical).

Opening The Fortune Cookie, your fortune is – this CD will give you much pleasure, listening-wise.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship in late August or the beginning of September – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).

Here's a Topic of the Day suggestion (I think we may have had this or something like it, but too bad):  when something bad happens, or you're in a funk, feeling blue, etc., etc., etc....what do you do to make yourself feel better?

I like to listen to music...specifically The Manhattan Transfer!  I love them and have seen them in concert eight times.  Technically, nine:  I saw two sets in one night...and I paid twice for them, too.

Anyone else?

What I like to do is jump into a hot Jacuzzi and soak it away. We had a nice four-seater in Long Beach, but it was too big to move and Delaware is not climate conducive to outdoor spas. To compensate, I had a big indoor tub/Jacuzzi installed in the house - even had to make the bathroom bigger just so it would fit. The contractor was to either install a double size water heater, or add a second heater for the tub. He did neither! So we have a very pricey tub in the bathroom that drains the hot water heater before it has enough water to cover the jets. In desperation we turned on all eight burners of the stove and heated pots of water, but that took forever. You can fill the tub until the heater is empty, turn on the bathroom ceiling heater to try and hold the temperature, then wait a half hour or so for the water heater to fill again. Once the tub is full, the in-line heater in the recirculater will hold the temperature. The utility cost for this luxury is really steep and the aggravation makes the tub basically unusable (except to hold pots of new greenery).

Which is why sometimes I have the disposition of the fabled Hippogater.

And now, for your mental delectation, the lyrics to my two elementary school songs, which popped into my head this morning for no known reason.  At Honeyhill Elementary School, we sang one of them each morning on alternating days.

Up on a hill where the honeybees roam,
There is a school not far from home.
Honeyhill's its name-
I think it's grand-
It is the best school that is in our land.

Not exactly Sondheim, is it?

We are very proud of Honeyhill
Our challenging work we do.
The good teachers we salute;
Our complaints are very few.

Our school is very beautiful,
But it's not the outside that counts.
It's the quality of the work we do.
And every year it mounts.

We also sang the Pledge of Allegiance each morning as well, but that's a story for another day.     :)

Years ago, I was at a Golden Globes function at the Ambassador Hotel.  This was at the time that HELLO, DOLLY was filming.

It was "known" in the industry that Walter Matthau and Barbra Streisand were not getting along on/off the set.

Matthau was at this affair, talking to some people.  After awhile, Streisand made her entrance

Matthau did a total about face; never looked at her the rest of the evening.

“That’s The Way It Was,” an hourlong CBS News special honoring Walter Cronkite, delivered network television’s largest audience in prime time on Sunday, as 7.4 million viewers tuned in during the 7 o’clock hour

When the show first started I thought, Oh, no--this is going to be a talking head calvacade of CBS stars but it did turn out to be a very worthy tribute to Uncle Walter.  I especially enjoyed the clips of some of Cronkite's fun moments, such as the Jimmy Buffet clip and the one from the Mary Tyler Moore show.

One strange thing, in all the news reports and tributes thus far, I haven't seen any footage from Cronkite's YOU ARE THERE or THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.  I hope that at some point we'll see somthing that does concentrate on his television work.

I've been robbed twice.

Once, my condo in Calabasas was broken into while I was at the post office.  My VCR (a Beta) was stolen.  Also, some old shirts.

I also had my new (3 weeks old) car stolen off Greenleaf Street in Sherman Oaks.  Left it parked in front of my date's house, while we took her car to go see a show at the Pasadena Playhouse.  Thankfully, the car was a lease and fully insured.  [They found its frame out in the desert a few weeks later.]

Now that I think about it, they might have shown a very brief clip of Cronkite doing the closing of a b&w episode of YOU ARE THERE.  But I want to see more.

There's probably clips out on YouTube.

I was also the victim of a drive-by shooting.

Again, in Calabasas.  I was out walking my dogs around ten o'clock one night.  A car drove by.  I heard a "pop," then it was like a spitwad hit me in the forehead.

I was very lucky.  The bullet just creased me.  An inch lower, and....

The cops figured it was a gang initiation.

Of course, I'm "convinced" that it was the Mob.  Two days earlier, I'd sold my screenplay, DILLINGER AND CAPONE, to Roger Corman...and Capone's boys were out to get me.

Wow!  That's pretty scary, DR Druxy!

I have never been a victim of any kind of major crime.  A play I wrote in college was stolen from my bookbag (a theft which I never really understood since it was a pretty bad play.)  And a few years ago, a Daredevil action figure was taken from my office.

My heart has been stolen quite a few times.  But that's generally regarded by the authorities as a petty crime.

When I lived in Toluca Lake the house was broken into.  Everything was taken out of the drawers etc., but nothing was stolen.   We were all 20 and did not own anything valuable.  The cops said they were only looking for drugs or money.  I replaced the broken door window and the 3 of us girls just went on like nothing happened, oh for the days of being young and oblivious to the world around you.

A beautiful day here. May stay in the low to mid 80s today again, and if it does, that will be most welcome. All that thunder last night didn't seem to produce any rain. I certainly couldn't tell any had fallen when I went out to get the newspaper this morning.

When I had my Mustang, I had wire rims that were stolen three times. The insurance paid for replacements, but the last time, I just didn't bother replacing them. Looked awful, but I lived in an apartment complex then and there was no way I could insure they wouldn't be stolen again.

I forgot to mention last night that I also watched THEY DO IT WITH MIRRORS, the PBS/Miss Marple show that was broadcast Sunday night. Joan Collins seemed a bit miscast as the worldly sister (not that she can't play worldly; she was just a poor match for the actress playing her sister). The deception to throw off the audience was pretty well handled, but this has always been my least favorite Miss Marple book, and none of the three movie versions (with Helen Hayes, Joan Hickson, and now Julia McKenzie) have improved on the story's basic blandness.

I noticed that next week's MISS MARPLE movie is another one that Miss Marple has been inserted into - WHY DIDN'T THEY ASK EVANS? If I have time later in the week, I need to watch the CBS TV-movie version of the book that doesn't feature Miss Marple so I can see how they work her in next week. I believe the BBC also filmed a version of this back in the 1980s, but I don't have that version on video.

My first apartment, I shared with two ladies while in college, was burgled one night while two of us were away; the third was awakened by noises in my bedroom (DON'T EVEN THINK OF GOING THERE!) and came to greet me.  Only it wasn't me, it was a man trying on my shoes.  Somehow, she convinced the man to leave - my doorway was right next to the entry door - and that was that.  She phoned me at parents and I drove back into the city.  The only thing missing was a pair of platform shoes - not silver.  The burglar left behind a pair of good cowboy boots, which I wore for years afterwards, and a vial of amyl nitrate, which I promptly threw away.  He also left behind the distinct aroma of alcohol.

While working at Carnegie-Mellon, I had a car stolen in broad daylight from a "secure" parking lot.  The car was found three days later in a seedy section of town, but, no damage had been done.

I had my brand new car broken into a few years back, as some may recall.

It was around 3 am and the passanger window was smashed in. Nothing was taken, as there was nothing in the car to take. Also, the alarm went off and scared the burglar off.

It took two weeks to get the window replaced, so I had to drive around with that darn plastic flapping in the wind.

Of course, a few months later the car was totaled in an auto accident.

Wow, there are a lot of new shows on tv tonight. I wonder why they are starting a new season of Hell's Kitchen in the summer?

I've actually been watching the ABC show Superstars (mostly because of max from DWTS). Surprisingly my 3 year old niece and brother-in-law are crazy about this show (it's really the only real show she watches).

She remembers all the contestants names. And she talks about everything that happens. It's pretty funny how much she remembers. She is obcessed with lisa leslie (sp?) the basketball player.

I don't believe HELL'S KITCHEN is going to be on in the fall once it finishes its summer/early fall run. I could be wrong about that, but seems like FOX is putting a new show on after BONES at 9 p.m. on Thursdays. Can't remember now what it is.

As for one of the other Topics of the Day...

I've never had my apartment or house broken into, but I have had things stolen from my car. Three times.

The first time was a smash and grab in the parking lot of Catholic University's music building. It took place while I was inside playing for a late night musical theatre recital rehearsal. "They" did take a couple of things from my car - as well breaking in my front passenger side window. Since I had just come from another rehearsal, they ended up taking: a rental tux, some xeroxes of string parts for Guys & Dolls, and some keyboard pedals. And, yes, all of that stuff was left in the front seat, out in the open. Lesson learned.  That one really hurt.

The second time was when my "day bag" got lifted out of the back seat of my car. I had left my windows open, and since my car was parked in back of my apartment, I'm guessing someone was walking through the alley, saw the open windows, peeked in, saw my bag and took it. Thankfully, the only important things that were in the bag were a set of expired of credit cards (don't ask).  However, a few weeks later, I did receive a call from the college police department saying that they had found my bag behind some building on campus. Sure enough, when I went to claim my bag, they were able to track me down via my expired credit cards - which were placed in one of the "hidden pockets", and, apparently, remained hidden. In fact, everything was still in my bag except for my portable metronome. -And the reason I had left my day bag in the car was that I always made sure to take my computer bag in with me first. (Whew!)

The third time was here in NYC.  Someone had rooted through my glove compartment. Nothing was taken, since there was nothing to take. And there was no broken glass to deal with since I had either somehow left the door unlocked or they jimmied the lock. Meh.

A lady friend of mine went to South Carolina last week to visit with female high school friends and to vacation with them at the beach.  They had a big party one evening and one of the ladies she went to school with danced the "shag" with her husband.  As soon as the dance ended, the lady collapsed.  A couple of the attendees were EMT's but they could not revive her.  The deceased was a member of the reunion party, so the beach trip was cancelled and everyone is attending that lady's funeral instead.

I had a house I rented with several other people broken into and the worst part of it was we knew exactly who had done it--a sleazy neighbor who managed an apartment house owned by the same guy who owned the house I rented, and for some idiotic reason the owner had given that guy a key to our house.  One of my roommates' mother had just died and this sleazebag made off with all of her jewelry he had brought home.

And Matt H. neglected to list this show as well. Mark and I have watched the show online and it's really pretty darn funny. It seems like just yesterday when Mark and I were talking to Patrick after some benefit he performed at and he told us that his brother, Shaun, was writing a show for him and David to star in together. (It was actually over a year ago.) Mark and I both thought, "yeah, like that will ever happen." I'm just shocked the day is actually here. I hope it's not cancelled after three episodes.

My point exactly! My concern was that everyone would think that David and Patrick were doing a real concert on stage together and everyone would be rushing to figure out where they could buy tickets.  :-)
Ron, you're not the only one to remark on David's tight face. Personally, he looks pretty wrinkled to me. What bugs me is that he's wearing 5 pounds of make-up and the shade is too dark. He never looked that tan before. I don't know who decided that you can make a person look younger with make-up, because you really can't.
I'm really excited for Patrick though. I'm sure people still stop Shaun and David for autographs, but no one even knows who Patrick Cassidy is, despite all the work he's done. He's never really experienced that strangers-recognizing-him-in-a-grocery-store type of fame. He's has done a great job of being pretty regularly employed throughout his acting career, just not famous. Maybe it's better that way - I don't know.

Then I got to work on my work project for the day: RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN. A kid's action movie and pretty much a remake of ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN, it was an OK time. Special effects have advanced SO much since that 1975 movie was made, so the sci-fi stuff worked very well. Pretty good cast, too. Cirian Hinds is a good substitute for Ray Milland from the original.

I watched all of the bonus items, not that there was that much. There were 8 deleted/scenes, a blooper reel, and a featurette on all the hidden Easter eggs within the movie celebrating the orignal film (most of which I would have missed if the director hadn't brought them to our attention in this little feature.)

Honestly, it just sounded too good to be true. No, it's not that I doubted Shaun would write it. Shaun has written quite a few shows that have never made it on the air. (So, I guess there is a history there.) As I'm sure everyone knows, just getting a pilot made is difficult enough, but then the odds of it getting "picked up" are even rarer. Shaun also wrote another show this year called "Inseparable" - a one-hour drama. The pilot was taped, but not picked up.

DR MattH that would be okay with me if they had a summer Hell's Kitchen and didn't have the Fall one. As it is most of the reality shows i watch have Fall editions.

And since So You Think You Can Dance is having a Fall edition, i'm not sure what will happen in Canada. Because we have a SYTYCD canada. They are starting it on aug 11th. But obviously the seasons will overlap (we get them both on the same station here). Perhaps i'll have to watch the US version on Fox.

That's too bad about the refinance, Michael.  Hopefully, you can find another bank or credit union and get a lower rate...this could be an opportunity. :D

I watched last night's THE CLOSER while I ate lunch. Once again Brenda is pitted against the interfering, slightly obnoxious Captain Raydor (Mary McDonnell) who's really a pain in the butt. Glad at the outcome, but the conflict within the department with the stubborn, impractical Raydor is as irritating to me as it is to Brenda!

Raydor may be "off-putting", to put it mildly, but the logic of her position is compelling: her recitation of the consequences of LAPD's Rampart Scandal was spot-on; her concern the Brenda's tunnel-vision zeal to solve her one case could lead to events that would put in jeopardy hundreds of other cases was valid.

der Brucer

Raydor's parting line, "And I have my own car." shows she can play at Brenda's level.

As I was leaving Rite Aid this afternoon, I had just started my car when I heard this car come roaring up the street, squeeling tires as it turned into the parking lot.  I decided I would not pull out until this yoyo had gone to wherever he was going; which turned out to be next to my car.  This young kid jumps out of the car and comes running over to me.  He told me that he had just had a gun pulled on him in a parking lot down the street, and would I call 911 for him.

I talked to the 911 operator first, and then she asked to speak to the young man.  He was extremely observant about remembering details of the truck, the direction the truck had fled, the description of the man, and the type of gun - even to the point of describing that the guy pulled the gun from a Crown Royal bag (I would have called it an ugly velvet sack, but what do I know?).   After making the poor kid repeat all of the details twice, the operator then asked if he would like to wait in the parking lot for an officer to come talk to him; and then the cops could go looking for the man.

The young man replied, "Gee, I kind of hoped you would have already sent the cops looking for the guy, and then you could come talk to me after you caught him."

I guess with the murder rate in Tacoma going up again to almost one a day,  the cops can't be bothered unless they actually pull the trigger!

Yet a new revision of the AMERICA parody, since it's a slow news day

(verse)

ANITA [holding her Tony Award]

Palace Theater
You lovely building
Even your name somehow pleases
Always the hippest shows running
Always the adulation stunning

MARIA {holding Tony]

Palace Theater
Unlucky building
So many actor diseases
Always the absence list growing
Always the crowd’s impatience showing
With the fans uh-oh-ing
And the chatters sighing
‘Cause they think we’re lying

I’d rather play the Belasco [ANITA: I know you would!]
That’s where the fans who have class go!

(the song)

MARIA
I’d be all right at the Lyceum
Audience bright at the Lyceum
Cheering each night at the Lyceum

ANITA
Gross always light at the Lyceum

MARIA
Quietest crowds at the Broadhurst

ANITA
They go to Angus and drink first

MARIA
Maybe the Hirschfeld and do “Hair”

ANITA
Audience joins you onstage there [OTHERS: Ay! I don’t like that!]

MARIA
What could be wrong at the Atkinson
Business is strong at the Atkinson
I’ll sing a song at the Atkinson

ANITA
Fans sing along at the Atkinson

MARIA
Fans are the tops at the Saint James

ANITA
Great photo ops, I won’t name names

MARIA
I like American Airlines

ANITA
If you like crowds straight from Carmine’s

MARIA
Top of the heap at the Marriott
No one’s a creep at the Marriott
Nothing too deep at the Marriott

ANITA
Crowds like to sleep at the Marriott

(big dance break)

MARIA
Fans at the Palace ain’t so bad

ANITA
I hated seeing you so sad

MARIA
Maybe it’s better that I stay

ANITA
Arthur just gave your job away [then: Oh, just teasing, Chiquitita]

(short dance to big finish)

I had my house broken into once.  It was a house I was renting when I first moved back to Iowa from Arizona.  I knew the guy living behind me had just gotten out of prison for breaking into houses.  He was pretty good at it actually and it took them a long time to catch him.  so I came home from work (as an Assistant County Attorney - yes, a prosecutor) and found the glass broken in my front door and the door unlocked.  I went in and called the police, they asked if someone was still in the house...Oh good grief! I had forgotten to check on that.  I went upstairs, found my cat was ok, and no one was there.   All that was taken was a jar of pennies.

My neighbor had loaned me a garden hose and the next day he wrote me a note asking for it back.  I took it over and asked him why he would break into my house when I had been nice to him.  He said he didn't do it.  He later was arrested for breaking into houses all over our neighborhood.  He confessed to all of them but mine, lol.

It was a little scary.  One thing, he asked if I would call 911.  If he had asked to use my cell phone I probably would have said no.  Secondly, while I was dialing 911, I was memorizing his license plate number.  And thirdly, since I am always forgeting my cell phone at home, I hope that someone would help in the same situation.

And speaking of WEST SIDE STORY parodies, here's a new Mark Sanford number about traveling on the taxpayer's dime and shedding tears as if that's going to make up for it.

(parody of "TONIGHT")

(verse)

MARIA (TO GOV. MARK SANFORD):
Homely you
You’re the homely man I’ll see forever
When I floss, take out trash
When I dance the tango too
I will think of you
Guv’nor

MARK SANFORD:
How much more can I cry for Maria
Every flight that I fly is Maria

MARIA:
Guv’nor, Guv’nor

MARK:
All for you every flight I ever flew
Everything for you
And me

MARIA:
And since neither of us paid, it’s free!

(the song)

MARK:
In flight, in flight
I thought of you in flight
That’s why I flew first class all the way
In flight, in flight
I thought my job’s all right
Even though I made taxpayers pay

Today
The state is Andre Bauer's
And Bauer's backed our story
But things don't seem quite right
I’ll act contrite
And hope that  hometown press ain’t too bright
Tonight

MARIA:
In flight, in flight
You’ll practice tears in flight
You’ll think of onions, hay fever too
In flight, in flight
You’ll think of  Bambi’s plight
When his mom’s time on screen was all through

MARK:
Today I’ll give the state an address
And open up the tear ducts
It should be quite a sight
I have the guts
They’ll sympathize if they think I’m nuts

BOTH:
Tonight!!!

They told me that I have a great credit score and perfect payment history but that I am self employed,  so until I could show 2-3 years of tax returns I can't refinance.  If I was about to default they could help me, but I pay on time every month so I get to pay a higher interest rate.  It sucks.

Feel better vibes for DR MBarnum.

Btw, i saw a dvd tonight you probably would like. It's called The Other End of the Line. IT stars Jesse Metcalfe (the sexy gardner from Desperate Housewives).

It's sort of a bollywoodish movie. Yet americanized.  The female lead is indian. She works for Citibank in India and has an american name and talks with an american accent. She pretends she lives in San Francisco).

She works for the credit card division's stolen cards. And "meets" jesse metcalfe when he is one of her customers.

It's a romantic comedy and pretty funny. And you get to see a lot of indian culture. I definitely thought it was fun.

It's not even anger, really - just a weird feeling I can't seem to shake easily.  Well, there might be a little anger, in that I'd like to kill the sons of bitches.  But just a little.

The fact of the matter is that you feel violated. My classroom got broken into many years ago, and though not much damage was done, I felt like a subtle kind of rape had occurred.

Then I took MARNIE off the shelf. I hadn't watched it in quite some time. Didn't really like it better than I ever have, but it's nice to see it with fresh eyes every couple of years. I have the original Collector's Edition release, and even though it is an anamorphic transfer, it looks pretty awful. I think the one in the Masterpiece Collection was a remaster and much improved from the one I have, but I wasn't going to buy all of those Universal/Hitchcock films again on DVD. I'll happily spring for them all again on Blu-ray, yes, even MARNIE.

So... I notice this story over at Playbill.com...

First Two Catch Me If You Can Previews Canceled in Seattle (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/131332-First_Two_Catch_Me_If_You_Can_Previews_Canceled_in_Seattle)

Then I saw this posted over on Facebook...

Just a little addendum/correction to DR MattH's On TV Tonight!™ listing -

Tonight's episode of "NYC Prep" on Bravo was not the finale.  I think there are about three more episodes left.

Just reporting what TV GUIDE said about the episode. I don't watch the show, so that's all I have to go on.

And with that said, I'm heading downstairs to bed.

Good night!

Well, after reading about the senseless murder of Teresa Butz - Norbert Leo Butz's sister (see my previous post)... well...

Goodnight.

I did end up going to the play reading.  Interesting piece by my designer, Doug Haverty.

Then I watched tonight's episode of TORCHWOOD - CHILDREN OF EARTH. Very exciting search and rescue operation. John Barrowman's nakedness was blurred out on the broadcast I watched. I assume it was across the network for all broadcasts, right?

Sadly, yes.  But it's going to be released on DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Torchwood-Children-Earth-John-Barrowman/dp/B002BVYBJW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1248241121&sr=1-1) next week. :D

I like Ron Pulliam's method of clearing the blues,  just get into it with music until you laugh,  very good.

What works best for me when I'm sad is sunshine, just sit and let it hit your face for 1/2 a hour.

And at night there's food and sleep.

And then I try to remember all I've gone through in my life and survived.
