I used to play golf with two of my brothers.  Three of them now play regularly.  It was not my favorite game....but if the weather was not too hot, all of the walking and the upper body work out  was very healthy and enjoyable.

My favorite game or sport to play is tennis, although I haven't played for about a year.  I like singles NOT doubles....although I will play doubles if I have to.

I stopped playing golf after the Granada incident.

What was the Granada incident, you ask?

Well back in 1985, my father bought a brand new emerald green Ford Granada with all of the extras.  It was some car.  I was driving it one day when my brother and I decided to leave work early and play an afternoon game of golf.

I stopped at my brother's house so he could pick up his clubs.  We had all of the windows down in the car because it was a pleasant day.  While he was inside, I decided it looked a bit like rain, and I didn't want rain in the backseat, so I used the power windows to roll up the back door windows.  My brother came out, didn't know I had done that, and tried to toss his clubs through the back door window ..... CRASH!

The resultant blame, drama, and expense caused me to give up a sport I only had a marginal interest in to begin with.

When I was around 12 or 13 my brother in law would force me to go golfing with him.

#1. I found golfing to be quite dull

#2. I did not like my brother in law, and spending hours on a golf course with him was torture.

PS: I am still not that fond of him

Good morning, all! Much as I hate to lay more bad news on DR Ron Pulliam early in the day, I will say only that I had a very sleepless night in which no amount of Vicodin or Flexeril could relieve enough pain to allow me to sleep. Tomorrow's the doctor, so we'll see what happens then.

I also had a frustrating day with Life Begins At 8:40; the copyists are making what I consider judgment calls without asking me for clarification on my layout sheets and that frustrates me since a number has to be redone vocally before I can proof it and sign off on it. That was the second biggest issue yesterday. I cannot go into the first one because it would cause too many problems within my team on the project.

I always thought golf was a ridiculous sport, right up there with football.

TOD - Although I took half a semester of golf to fulfill my college phys ed requirement, I did not become a golfer.  In 1977 (long before Richard and I married), my parents, my sister's family, and I rented a cottage at Torch Lake, MI, for a week's vacation.  While Mom, Dad, and my sister and her husband played golf, I took my niece and nephew on day trips to places like Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.  That niece, Laura, eventually took up the game herself and, for about 15 years now, has been Head Professional at Illinois State University's

Weibring Golf Club (http://www.isugolf.com)

TOD:

I took up golf as a lark with friends in my early 20's.  We were mostly a pack of goof-offs, generally a little stoned and constantly asked by other guys if they could play around us.  I always had a good time and actually learned how to play.

I got a little more serious about the game in my 30's because the company I worked for would often sponsor golf events and we were expected to participate.  But while I developed a pretty decent drive, my putting skills sucked.  Once I left that company to work elsewhere, I quickly lost interest altogether.  The last few times I went out to a club I spent most of the time on the drive range trying to hit the ball retriever kid.

If I can muster enough concentration, I'm going to try to get some work done this afternoon. The next review disc I have is the Blu-ray of Jacques Tati's PLAYTIME which I've seen before but was not the Criterion reviewer when the last DVD came out. So, I'll be doing this one from scratch.

I'm expecting the Blu-ray to be astonishing looking (maybe I shouldn't overexpect), but I was pretty impressed with the DVD, so this should be an improvement on that.

Aside from putt-putt golf, I've never much cared for the game and it is certainly boring to watch on TV.  When I was 12-13, my father...a golfer...decided all us kids would take golf lessons given by the pro at the Country Club (which we had joined so my father could play golf...I personally preferred the loca swim club pool to the country club pool which was a tad snobby).  He even invested in a minimal set of left-handed golf clubs for my sister and me, both lefties.  These lessons, however, did not take...and I developed no interest in the game.  I have no idea where the left-handed clubs are...probably with my sister, who doesn't play either.  My two brothers still play, I believe.

Though I'm very fond of badminton, I've never had enough of a level yard to play regularly.  My favourite sport is Scrabble.
Title: Re: GOLF
Post by: Matt H. on July 28, 2009, 07:46:54 AM
My family were all enthusiastic golfers, so naturally I hated it. I did TRY to get in the swing (pun intentional) of the game, but I just found it very dull. I've played two nine hole rounds, and that's all I ever hope to play. (I have always enjoyed going to a driving range, however, and putt-putt is also fun.)

My dad was the club champion something like 14 times, and one of the years he didn't win, my older brother beat him to become club champion. They were both scratch golfers (no handicap), and my brother had a golf scholarship to his college (The Citadel).

I didn't get a chance to participate in the Sherlock Holmes topic yesterday, but I've said it before that I ADORE the character and always enjoy seeing Holmes in his many incarnations even if the films are some thing less than wonderful.

Basil Rathbone is certainly my favorite Holmes without a doubt, and I agree that THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES is a wonderful, atmospheric film, one of the best ever for the character. My favorite of his Universal modern period was THE HOUSE OF FEAR though THE SCARLET CLAW is certainly right up there and SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH was also super entertaining.

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES that DR Michael Shayne was talking about yesterday with William Shatner was actually a pilot episode for an ABC anthology mystery series (they were trying to ape the successful NBC Mystery Movie franchise) that never got off the ground. Shatner played Stapleton in that adaptation, and Stewart Granger was Holmes with Bernard Fox as Watson. It was made on the cheap, but I've always longed to see it again. I hope to stumble across it one of these days.

Of the non-Rathbone features, I like best HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES with Peter Cushing. I enjoyed A STUDY IN TERROR the one time I've seen it, but that was many years ago, and my memories are vague. MURDER BY DECREE (also about Jack the Ripper) was entertaining but featured lots of blood.

Last night I watched BELLS ARE RINGING on TCM.  I was very excited to see this movie for the first time a couple of years ago when it was first released to dvd, but in seeing it again it struck me as extremely tedious. The movie begins with a bland montage of NYC construction and then establishes the spared-from-demolition brownstone that offices Susansaphone--but why?--what does it all have to do with the story?  And then musical numbers like "Hello, Hello There" and "Mu-Cha-Cha" are set up but then dropped.  Judy Holliday seems to have been told to just do exactly what she had been doing on the stage and Dean Martin is just along for the ride.  The camera barely pans during the last ten minutes  of the movie.  Where was Vincente Minnelli?  Was he ever on the set at all?  Ugh!  I doubt that I'll ever pull this one off the shelf to play again...

When I was a youngen, my friend Tony had the Arnold Palmer Table Top Golf Game, which we would play with for hours.  It was a tin putting green game base onto which you would place various obstacles like bumpers or a tunnel or a ramp.  You hit the golf ball with little handheld push button putters.  It was essentially miniature miniature golf and a lot of fun.  I've been periodically checking for it on eBay but the ones I've come across have been in bad condition or incomplete.

Just found a pic of a set on eBay:

There are two sure fire laughs in The Producers, even when we've had totally dead audiences (figuratively speaking, but not by much--we have a lot of blue hairs in the audience every night).  One is the pigeon Adolf doing the Hitler salute and the other is Roger's line about The Chrysler Building.  We had one show when those were the only two laughs, believe it or not.

I've never gotten into golf either, but my father and my two youngest brothers play from time to time.  However, I do understand the appeal of an activity that requires "pinpoint" concentration, as well as some mathematical calculations, coupled with a bit of chance.  -Much like piano playing. ;)

Taking a shower in Phoenix in July:

To take a hot shower simply turn ONLY the cold water on.  To use any available cool water, turn ONLY the hot water on and use what is sitting in the pipes for about the 30 seconds before the water heater kicks in.

Question for BK:

You mentioned in the notes that re: Season Two of LOST that one new character irritated you, and one is your fav. Who are they?

The character who irritated me (actress, character, and writing of character) is the former police woman who is the bossy leader of the second cast of characters (from the tail of the plane).  My favorite of the new characters is the African-American fellow whose brother was the priest - terrific actor and his role is well-written.

Yes, he IS a terrific actor.  Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje who plays Mr. Eko.  He was also sensational in the cable hit "Oz".

Ana Lucia is the other character, and she was played be Michelle Rodriguez.

I did find enough patience to watch some fun and work things this afternoon. I began by watching next week's episode of NURSE JACKIE from Showtime On Demand. As I started it, I wondered WHY ON EARTH after spending all day at the hospital I'd want to watch a hospital show today, but it had already started, and it is only 26 minutes long. Another very good, funny but poignant episode.

Then I watched last night's RAISING THE BAR. This may have been the best episode of the season thus far. I really enjoyed both cases and felt the endings were appropriate.

Then, I decided I'd try PLAYTIME. I figured if I just got antsy, I could save my place (Criterion Blu-rays allow you to bookmark anywhere you stop), but I was able to get through the whole thing.

It's a film with so many brilliant moments, and so much going on that multiple viewings really are required to have a chance of catching everything.

Still, it's too long and some of the joy and wit just sort of wilts after a time. Great gags, though, and it's always a pleasure to watch it. (I can't imagine that the original ran 30 minutes longer than the version we now have. Talk about too much of a good thing.)

All the men of my mother's side of the family were golfers.  Going back, her grandfather and her father were greenskeepers.  One of my uncles ended up being a greenskeeper as well.
I'd like to say that I've never set foot on a golf course, but, while the tv-movieTHE TEN MILLION DOLLAR GETAWAY was being filmed in and around Pittsburgh, my one shooting day as an extra involved a bar, a bowling alley, a club house and a golf course!   And though only contracted for the 6am call at the bowling alley, my day ended at the golf course at midnight. . .
I'm quite visible in all my "atmosphere" scenes in this film. . .
To misquote ANNIE, " but I've never even picked up a golf club!"
I have no interest at all in the sport, but, in hi-def, those greens sure are G-R-E-E-N!  My relatives would have been proud.

We have reunion every 5 years.  I feel like I see everyone a lot. (ok once in 5 years isn't a lot, but when you don't have a tone in common it's quite frequent).  There are a couple people I really wanted to see and neither are going to be there.   One is doing some women's bible thingy in Ethiopia, the other is home with her mother who just had major surgery.

I'll stay with my  parents and have plans to go to an art festival with mom and to paint the dock for her.  My siblings make promises to do work for her and never do it.  So...

I finished all of the bonus features on PLAYTIME. They were all well done, but the trouble is that since his body of work was fairly small, many of the same memorable clips got used over and over in the various documentaries. So, when the clips would come on, I'd speed through them not needing to see the same sequence yet again. Of course, if there was voiceover, I would not speed through them.
Title: Re: GOLF

Next I watched a couple of MURDER SHE WROTE episodes. Both were set in New York. In the first Jessica was being interviewed by a young magazine writer who had a fierce agent who got his client high paying gigs. Herb Edelman was once again the police detective assigned to the case.
Title: Re: GOLF

The second one dealt with a virtual reality game that Jessica had written the scenario for and the snafus that were leading up to the public unveiling of the software. Both had very easy to spot murderers.

Sorry to her you are going through such pain. May the doctor find something to cure it.

I do a few questions about Life Begins at 8:40

1) Did Ira Gershwin and EY Harburg actually co-wrote the lyrics to together or the wrote them solo?

2) Are you including the three songs that cut from the show?

& one purely academic

The show was originally going to be The Ziegfeld Follies of 1935----what happened?

Oh and I am not back home in Boca.

Never again will I fly Air Wisconsin and US Air. Both flights were late leaving the respective cities.
The air conditioning did not work on both planes.

But I did get work done.

bk - Hugo's was featured on tonight's episode of "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" on the Food Network.  Alas, Pasta Papa was not the "best thing".  However, "Pasta Mama" was.

Just saw this

But the big news is the planned, official, B'way revival of "Promises, Promises" -- the 1968 Bacharach/David musical for which Simon wrote the book. Simon's wife Elaine was as excited about the project as husband Neil and said it looks like Sean Hayes ("Will and Grace") will star as Chuck Baxter. He had played the lead in a private reading of the project with Anne Hathaway and producers are now looking for Zooey Deschanel ("500 Days of Summer") to co-star.

I guess ABC decided to reair the Bachelorette finale tonight and delay the finale of The Superstars till next week.

At 8:05pm i got a very upset call from my niece saying that the show was not on and "some bachlorette show was on". She was not happy.

Amazingly she has asked about the Superstars finale (and if she missed it) at least 3 times this weekend. I guess they missed their target audience. 3 year olds! :)

It got to 104 degrees today in Salem  :P

The air conditioning in my office doesn't work and my window faces the afternoon sun. It was very uncomfortable.

At 9:00 pm here, it is 94 degrees.

Almost like being in Phoenix. (Almost a Brigadoon reference.)

The band pictured is THE WHO; hence my earlier comments.
I don't know the context of the photo though.

I received this note from DakotaCelt on Facebook. She asked me to share it with everyone:

It has been a rough and tumble few weeks.

In June I lost my maternal grandfather. Then wedding planning... and more wedding planning... I idid a lot of my invites, etc on the computer. Far cheaper.

My computer at home has completely died but I cannot afford to buy a new one until October. Wedding expenses are putting the kabosh on that.

That will limit me to getting to HHW until school starts. I hope I can slip on during the day hours but they watch too close. At night I have a bit more freedom.

Please extend my hellos to everyone and I DO MISS HHW...

I suspect I am inline for a bitchslapping from Bruce.

Always played miniature golf.  There used to be a great place at Sepulveda and Ventura Blvd.   But I think it's gone too.

Never had a desire to play the other kind, some of the golf courses are beautiful.  There are stories to be shared from the Jr. High and High School years that took place on the golf course at the Toluca Lake Country Club, during the midnight hours.

My boss plays everyday.  A friend of mine played golf everyday with her boss up to the week he passed away at 92 (?) years old.

Well happy Wednesday then.

Good night, Sam.  I'm going to bed, also.  Hopefully, I'll be able to sleep more comfortably in my own bed now that my brand new operable skylight can be opened. :)

The only time I saw the WHO live, everyone stood on their chairs and I was too short to see over their heads.

Which was OK, as skinny shirtless guy on stage was more than I wanted to look at.

The concert was great.  I can't remember the name of the gigantic concert/stadium venue downtown.

It might not be there anymore.

Pasta Mama is very similar to Pasta Papa, but has a ton of garlic added, which is why I prefer the milder Pasta Papa.
