Well, you've read the notes, the notes did or did not make you want to read Silas Marner, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently reading Silas MOOner.

And since it has already been "hinted" at as a Topic of the Day -

Which "standard" work(s) of literature - or other "required reading" - did you find "not good" and/or not bother to read (a.k.a. You Clif Note'd it)?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......I liked just about everything we had to read for school.  But I do have to say that I don't like TOM SAWYER and HUCKLEBERRY FINN....irritating dialect and some really dumb adventures.

I'll start...

At the end of my junior year of high school, I found out that I was qualified to take AP Government during my senior year, so I went ahead and signed up for APGOV. We were given a list of about 20 books from which we had to pick five to read over the summer.  Well...

I actually did get a head start on checking out the books on the list, just to see what I thought would make for some "good summer reading".  Well, none of the books were "good summer reading".  And, of course, most of them were over 300 pages long.  -Who knew that so much could be written about the U.S. Government?  ::)  Well...

I believe I managed to get through 1/4 of one of the books, while the rest sat more or less unopened on my desk.  Needless to say, it came as quite the shock when we were suddenly handed pop-quizzes - well, more like pop-tests - about the books we were supposed to have read over the summer during the second week of class.  I somehow managed to scrape by - as did a number of my fellow AP Government classmates.

*Worst of all - unlike the AP English reading list (which I did like, and which I did read (more or less)) - we never referred nor used any of the texts from the AP Government summer reading list during the course of the course.  Yes, we covered the related topics, but our text book remained our only text for the class.

Well, well, well. . . last night I watched a motion picture on Blu-Ray entitled REPULSION.  I had not seen this film since seeing it at a repertory house in the 1980s. . .and I agree with everything BK said about it.

DR Jose said,
Quote
DR td - Congrats on being "officially" part of the reading!

. . .and I say "Thank you," and all the others who wished me well yesterday.  I'm happy to have served the playwright, who indeed did write the character "in" my voice.  I've been a part of this particular script since its inception, did other readings of it under different titles way back when, so it was like having unused muscles kick back in.  Father Peter is one of those roles which I hope to play onstage someday soon. . .

Good morning, all! I had a very restless night, and I had to take another Vicodin around 2:30. Then I slept too late this morning. I'm not feeling any signs of being over-active yesterday, so that's good, but I think I'll take it very easy today. My only plans are to continue reading through Russell Warner's new score to Kern's OH BOY!, looking for discrepancies in the piano part. I'm hoping my colleague Curtis will stop by to pick up the proofed scores for LIFE BEGINS. . .

SILAS MARNER was a good read, one of the few required texts I actually enjoyed reading. Outside of the title character, I cannot remember a single character's name or much of the plot.

Good morning!

It was raining when I finally made my way outside to get the paper (was up several times during the night with some pain but finally fell asleep and slept until almost 9 a.m. which almost NEVER happens). The rain wasn't cooling things off, however, so it remains a hot, muggy day in progress. It's supposed to rain off and on all day today, so mowing the grass was canceled.

I had the same reaction to SILAS MARNER, DR Elmore. I can't say that I went into it with much emthusiasm, but I came to love it by the time it was finished. Same with JANE EYRE. Both of these were required reading in sophomore English class in high school, and I loved them.

Now, MOBY DICK (from junior year) was the book I had a hard time finishing. We were given the unabridged edition to read, and it was just SO detailed and dull that I found an adbirdged copy and bought that instead which is what I read. I think this is the first time I have ever admitted that to anyone.

Another book from junior year that all my friends loved and I was very lukewarm toward was THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS RAY. Of course, they despised THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, and I though that was a masterpiece. Funny what appeals to folks and what doesn't.

So, Dixie Bell and I go out on her leash. She does her business and walks back up the driveway into the house. Suddenly, a light bulb (so to speak) goes off above her canine cranium - she realizes that she didn't go as far as usual, so she looks to the freezer for her leash and wants to go back outside. She runs to the car and so we take our morning run around the cemetery as usual. . .

I always had a difficult time with required reading: in college I hated KING LEAR when I was forced to read it, and now it's my favorite Shakespeare play; there are moments guaranteed to rip my heart from my body and reduce me to tears. Other required reading I disliked:
PARADISE LOST (just eat the damned apple!)
GREAT EXPECTATIONS (now I think it's a great novel)
MACBETH (I didn't realize in 10th grade that I would become a relative or I would have paid more attention)
MOBY DICK (give me the movie any day!)

Outside of SILAS MARNER and THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE, I cannot think of any required reading that I actually did like at that period of my life.

In grad school, I took a wonderful 20th Century French lit class which required me to read novels I would never have picked up on my own - St Exupery's NIGHT FLIGHT and Camus' THE PLAGUE among them - and several plays I had never read before: Anouilh's ROMEO AND JEANNETTE, Giraudoux' ELECTRA, Sartre's wonderful THE FLIES, and Cocteau's INFERNAL MACHINE. The instructor, the late great Stan Luce, was a really fine teacher, and I think it might have been my favorite class in grad school.

I must do a whirlwind trip somewhere soon again, especially if such trips have the possibility of turning out as nicely as this week's Pittsburgh trip:  it was one evening, but a full one, with a lovely dinner with Ann Miner, seeing Copacabana at the CLO, and then finally meeting the wonderful td.

Somehow, it doesn't seem whirlwind unless you fly though - the train and car trips to D.C. just haven't had that same feel about them.  maybe it's that those are too simple to get to to be whilrwind.

I never had to read Silas Marner - I did have toread The Old Man and the Sea which I absolutely despised

I was not at all surprised to learn the author had committed suicide - anyone who could write a book with such a miserable outlook on life had to be deeply depressed

I spent the remaining three hours this afternoon watching Kurosawa's KAGEMUSHA. He certainly proves (as if any proof were needed) that he can handle both small domestic scenes as well as large scale panoramic battles. Can't help feeling this is still a bit too long. And I much more enjoyed the small scenes rather than the action sequences (though the staging of that climactic battle sequence took guts: showing no battle footage but merely the horrified faces of onlookers and then the aftermath).

Fridays' visit with e doctor involved a full physical and an EKG - the results of which semed fine and then I was sent to give up a few pints of blood for testing the results should be in Monday

next Friday I am scheduled for an electrocardiogram

I thought an EKG was an electrocardiogram.

I may have my terms mixed up  - the one next week is where they used the sonogram machine to watch how the valves are working - the one on Friday was where they hook up all the little electrical leads and print a readout as to how fast and regular the heart is beating

A few times during that three hours, I punched the audio button to listen to little bits of the commentary. Sounds like it's going to really be a good one. I'll listen to much more of it tonight along with the other bonus features. There appear to be about six bonuses.

I had both of those tests this past Monday, come to think of it. I've had the EKG before, but had never had the sonogram of my heart. Mine was part of the stress test I had to undertake.

Today we were supposed to have a service conducted by the new pastoral canidate - to be followed by a congregational vote on whether to call said canidate as Pastor - instead we had an annoucement that after weeks of interviews and meetings the canidate decided to withdraw becasue he didn't like the parsonage

guess he wasn't the right guy for us

Some denominations assign ministers. Some denominations have the local congregations hire their pastors. The minister comes to see the church and see the congregation and preach a sermon.

Have now finished five episodes of Lost, Season Two and was sad to see

SPOILER

that one of my favorite characters, Mr. Eko, has been killed off.  And now we suddenly have a couple of new and boring characters who've suddenly appeared - members of the crash who, I guess, have been lurking in the background.  Of course, I don't really think they were lurking anywhere, but now they're part of the cast and I suppose we'll be seeing more of them.  I find it odd, because I'd much rather have more Mr. Eko, and even more Shannon.

I bought and tried some Greek Gods brand ice cream the other night.  It was on sale in the yuppie grocery store that I can't really afford to shop.  The flavor I had was not exactly my favorite.  It was Honey Pomegranate, which was not my first choice.  I wanted the Baklava flavor, but they were sold out.

The other flavor that I purchased I was really offended by the name of it.  In fact, I asked to see the manager and when he came over I said that although I understood the homosexuality was often assoicated with the Greeks; that I still felt the name of this flavor was offensive to gay men.  That is when the manager pointed out that the flavor was Chocolate Fig.

Greetings, all.

We are back from Highland (it's a small town in Ulster County in upstate New York about an hour 20 from Manhattan). We had a very nice time. It was simple and relaxing and we had a very happy time. We took the train from Grand Central and arrived at Poughkeepsie around 12:30. We went with our (Anthony's) cousin to the house. It's a very nice place with three bedrooms and a new kitchen and lots and lots of open space. The property is very rocky (Michael is doing some landscaping to even out the area) but beautiful. After lunch some of us went on a hike. There are a few pictures but I don't have them. If/when I get them I will post one or two. It was a two and a half mile walk through wooded area ending up at the Hudson River. We sat at the river and talked and looked at the sailboats and relaxed. Then we walked back to the car and drove home. Anthony had just woken up from his 2 hour nap as we arrived back at the house. I guess he needed the sleep after the long week on Long Island.

We had a marvelous dinner of steak, burgers, potato salad and a wonderful cucumber salad. We ended the meal with a Snickers Cheese Cake and fresh fruit to make it seem less decadent. We then played games while the three younger ones (one is 10, another is 15 and another is 17) went downstairs to watch Spy Kids 2.

I was worn out by 10:30. Walking that way is completely different from walking in New York City on level ground and going up and down stairs. I fell into bed and slept through until 8am! I'm usually up by 6:15 but it felt great to sleep in.

We had planned on going to the Ulster County Fair today but it rained all day (of course when we got in the car to return to the city it stopped raining) so we just had breakfast and lunch and continued our relaxing day talking and laughing and having a great time.

One set of guests left around 1:30 and we left around 2:30. Traffic was heavy but not terrible and we were home by 5pm.

I have to go to work tomorrow but I have had a wonderful day and a half weekend so I'm ready for the next five days.

TCB, thanks for asking. He's doing OK. It was good for both of us to get away. Although George's death was expected it was still hard. He's watching a DVD right now. He's keeping in touch with Elinor and will go out to Long Island as needed to help her out. He's planning on getting back into his schedule this week, going back to Dance Class and continuing work on his newest project, a Toy Theatre from Pollock's Toy Shop in London. A friend of our bought him one on his last trip to London and he's very excited about building it and putting together sets.

Here is a look at the newest piece.

I felt the same thing this afternoon. And took a nap. When my niece woke up i didn't even know where i was. I was in such a deep sleep (which never happens with me!).

BK, I still watch HEROES as does DR MattH and a few other DRs.

Will you like it? That's hard to say. Is it as good as LOST? IMO, no.

But they are different.

I believe we just finished season 3. I did love it in the beginning. So i'd say watch season 1. If it's not for you you'll know. But i remember season 1 being amazing.

I didn't like the show as much this past season. But maybe that was just me.
But season 1 was very good. So since you already have the dvds watch them.

I have never seen the series Heroes. From what I heard about it goes up and down in quality of the stories.

I do not watch LOST when it airs. I have been very careful not to read anything about this past season as I don't want it to be spoiled for.

Well I had one situation spoiled. I was reading an article about Dominic Monahan who played Charlie and the article mention another character and his/hers fate. I was really pissed that I read it, but I think it was sort of known that that would be their fate from how the stories were told on the previous season. But still I rather I didn't know

The list version:

-Train was scheduled to leave at 10:50am.
-When I left my parents' house, it was running one minute late according to the website.
-When I got to the train station, train 194 was now running 10 minutes later... Then 15 minutes late.
-By the time we got to Washington, DC, Union Station, the conductor thought we would be able to make up some time by cutting short the layover.  However, since it was a sold out train, it took a bit longer to get everyone on board.
-Then the air conditioning in my car started not working so well. It wasn't "warm", but you could feel the humidity in the air.
-By the time we pulled into Philly, it was determined that the engine was having some trouble, so we stopped for a couple of minutes there while maintenance checked things out - including the air conditioning.
-About five minutes outside of Philly, we stopped again due to the suspected engine trouble.
-When we pulled into Newark - which is just one(!) stop away from New York Penn Station - we stopped again for another maintenance check, as well as a crew change.
-Eventually, we arrived at Penn Station at 6:30pm... Instead of the scheduled 4:47pm... And since I was supposed to see a friend's show at 8:00... Run, Jojo, Run!

DR FJL - You could always take a plane to DC, and make it a true whirlwind trip.  Take the shuttle down in the morning, see a matinee, then take the shuttle back.

Then again, there's always Chicago or Boston.

DR vixmom - Sleep is good. Being able to rest is good.  I hope you are able to work more "rest" into your schedule over the coming weeks.

Good evening, I am back home with Callie and Boo.  I had a good time last night at the reunion. There was a good turn out and we did this grill your own steak thing that actually worked out great.

Cilla, were you shocked at the number of old people who showed up at your reunion?

A couple surprised me. We have reunions every 5 years, so there weren't too many big surprises.

Dear Cillaliz, glad you had fun.

Thanks Sam.   It was a nice mix of the class reunion, time with my parents and seeing an old family friend who was in town for a couple days.

bk - As for "Heroes" - I run hot and cold on it.  I'll watch it if I happen to be home when it's on, but it's not on my "Must See" list.  And, as others have mentioned, the second season seemed to stray a bit, then things started to come together again.

DR Michael S - If I were you, I would have stopped reading any article or interview with any member of the cast of "Lost". There's no way "Lost" would not come up in an interview with any member of that cast.

Fred - Not necessarily.  But if a situation needs to be "created", so be it. ;)

I may watch tonight's episode of "True Blood" before I go to bed, but I really should get to bed sooner rather than later since I'm heading back to Lancaster in the morning for the day.  And after the past 48 hours, I have a feeling that getting out bed about seven hours from now, is not going to be an easy task.

Did I miss the post in answer to my question about Heroes?

I forgot to answer. I don't think you'll like it. The first half of the first season is fun and builds to a wonderfully tense confrontation. The second half of the first season repeats many of the formulas of the first half so it seems repetitive. Even fans of the show admit that season two was a distinct letdown.

I watched all of the KAGEMUSHA bonus features to begin my evening by finishing up today's work project. There was a 41+ minute TV documentary on the making of the film, one in a series of these programs made near the end of his life (called IT'S WONDERFUL TO CREATE). I really enjoyed that.

Next, I picked off the shelf a movie I always enjoy revisiting. I had seen bits and pieces of it on one of the HBO channels, so I was reminded I wanted to watch the whole thing again:

THE RIVER WILD. I think it's one of the best action-adventure movies made in the last 15 years.

This was one of the earliest DVD releases, and yet the transfer still looks pretty damn good. I'd LOVE to see this on Blu-ray.

Oh...

So, after I caught the train uptown to my apartment, changed clothes, and then headed back down to Times Square and over the West Bank Cafe, then downstairs to the Laurie Beechman Theatre to attend tonight's installment of "Ryan Raftery & Friends: A Solo Act".  Yes, the same Ryan Raftery from What If?

He sings. He monologizes (?).  He even dances.  But, most of all, he actually made me laugh.  A couple of times.  :)

I'm a bit hesitant to talk about his act just in case any other DRs may happen to catch his show sometime in the future.  There are just too many bits - and good ones at that! - and I don't want to spoil it for anyone.  However...

I guess I could say that he covers the divas: Celine, Whitney, Carrie Underwood and Tina Turner.  He shares some memories from his childhood, from his time in rehab, from his trip to the Mid-East, and his time at sleep-away camp.  Oh, and there's an urn on the piano containing the ashes of his father.

Then I watched tonight's very exciting episode of TRUE BLOOD. I can't wait for that smarmy preacher to get taken care of by the vampires or anyone else (Sookie maybe or Jason?) who can get hands on him!

LOL!  Grocery shopping with you must be a riot!!

BK - have you seen the movie TAKEN?  Maggie Grace (Shannon) is in it.  It's a better film, and a better performance than THE FOG's remake.

I knew she looked familiar - now I know why.

I had some barbecue for dinner, and have been doing a lot of proofing and writing.  Book has been sent to publisher, so that's all finally done.  Liner notes are not only done, but I've proofed the booklet and inlay card and those have been sent for approvals.  In other words, I haven't stopped since I got up this morning.

I'm going to give you dear, dear people out there in the dark your advance pre-preorder information on the new Kritzerland title at midnight.  Because it turned into a two CD set, I insured that it was going to sell out quickly, and, in fact, outside of dealers, we will only have less than two hundred to sell.
