Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a distraction, and now it is time for you to post until the distracted cows come home.

As promised, here is your early announcement of the new Kritzerland release - I'm particularly pleased and excited about this one.  You know the deal - this special 2 CD set is priced at our normal one CD price - $19.98 plus 3.75 shipping.  Pay via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net and be sure to put the album title in the invoice.

“HEY HEY HEY”

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition CD – a two CD set featuring the original motion picture soundtracks from two 1960s comedies, How To Murder Your Wife and Lord Love A Duck, music composed and conducted by Neal Hefti, including the world premiere release of Wife’s original film tracks.

How To Murder Your Wife and Lord Love A Duck were both written by George Axelrod, who’d had great success on the stage with The Seven Year Itch and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter, and as a screenwriter for two all-time classic films, Breakfast At Tiffany’s and The Manchurian Candidate.  How To Murder Your Wife (directed by Richard Quine) starred Jack Lemmon, Virna Lisi, Terry-Thomas, Eddie Mayehoff, and Claire Trevor, and Lord Love A Duck (directed by Axelrod) starred Roddy McDowall, Tuesday Weld, and Ruth Gordon.  Wife was a hit, but is barely thought of today because in today’s world it’s quite an un-PC film, while Duck was a flop that became a cult classic over the years, despite it being a wildly uneven film.  Both share Mr. Axelrod’s quirky, iconoclastic comedic voice, and both, especially when viewed in the context of the decade they were made in, are still quite funny.

Providing the scores for both films was the great Neal Hefti.  For How To Murder Your Wife, Hefti wrote one of his most sublime scores, one filled with one incredibly catchy theme after another, and for Lord Love A Duck he wrote a fun and funky score that perfectly captures the whole mid-1960s Southern California scene perfectly.  During that period, Hefti also wrote the classic theme for TV’s Batman, and the scores for Duel At Diablo, Barefoot In The Park, Harlow, Synanon, Oh, Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You In The Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad, and, of course, his classic theme and score for The Odd Couple.

How To Murder Your Wife was previously released on CD as part of a very big and very expensive box set called The MGM Soundtrack Treasury from Film Score Monthly – that set sold out very quickly, so for people who missed it, or may have wanted only one or two scores, it was a lost opportunity.  Therefore, we’re very pleased to bring out this single release of Wife, coupled with the CD premiere of Lord Love A Duck.  Wife receives a brand new, fresh transfer from the original stereo album master, and Duck has been mastered from its stereo album master.

But the big news is our discovery of Wife’s original film score tracks.  The album version was a re-recording, much in the style of what Henry Mancini was doing back then – the film’s themes, but in more pop-oriented versions and which were nowhere near as good as the original film tracks.   Recorded in mono, all the film tracks, believed to have been lost to time, actually survived in excellent sound, and we are thrilled to present the entire original film soundtrack on one CD, and the album presentation and Lord Love A Duck on a second CD.   Hearing those original score tracks will be a revelation and goes to prove that Neal Hefti was an amazing and unique film composer.  And, best of all, this two CD set is available at our normal one CD limited edition price.

Last night, I went to a friend's house and played a murder mystery game.  We all had personae of actual people in the court of Queen Elizabeth I and I was Christopher Marlowe.  We each had secrets, we each had goals, we each had abilities, we all had to try and figure out who killed the cardinal and I had no clew as to what the heck was going on. :-\ Each person had so much to read and try to remember (a Fantasticks reference) that it all just went over my head.  Other friends of mine who were there also said that they've played murder mysteries with a lot more structure to the game...less back-story and knowledge of the time was necessary.  If they (my other friends) do a murder mystery night, I might try that, but otherwise, I don't think I have any interest in trying this again.

You are not pompous but is their a harsher word than loathe?

I hate how the viewers are manipulated by the editing and how they set up certain contestants to fail (They deny this of course)

As for the Topic of the Day...

I would have loved to attend a taping of the original Japanese version of "Iron Chef". Even though there was a lot of intentional hokieness, there was always a great sense of respect for the chefs and the major traditions of Japanese cooking and dining practices.

Otherwise, I would like to be a judge on the Food Network's "Iron Chef America" or "Chopped". Free food! ;)

*And I would never subject myself to anything like "Survivor" or "Big Brother". However, the travel and adventure aspect of "The Amazing Race" does have some appeal.

And speaking of food and The Food Network, there was a great article about cooking shows (starting with Julia Child's "The French Chef") and how they have changed and changed us over the years in yesterday's NY Times Magazine. Michael Pollan's essay/article is truly a good and thought-provoking read. It should be available on the Times' site throughout this week.

I guess "hate" is a stronger word than "loathe", but "loathe" just has a better, stronger feel to it. It's chewier.

Of course there's going to be some editing, and, yes, the producers will play favorites - and non-favorites. You only get manipulated if you allow yourself to. You're watching a show, not participating in it. -Even if you do find yourself on the proverbial edge of your seat at times.

Good morning, all! This morning, I actually submerged myself in a tub of hot wate. I've been giving myself sponge baths but I decided it was time to test the leg out or be stuck in a bathtub of cooling water till I died. Everything worked out fine, the leg is stringer today, although the pain is keeping me up a lot of the night, and my next test is a walk to Staples in about 15 minutes to use their fax.

I really want to get to the LoC reading on August 13, so I'm pushing myself for that trip. I also want to get back to the McGlinnventory soon, and I'm sure that my help is needed getting ready for the LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 reading. I'm also getting tired of home confinement, and I want to leave the apartment without a major fear of not getting back in one piece.

I'm with you, DR Ben, on reality shows. I watched THE AMAZING RACE when my friend Nick was on it, but there's so much tv production manipulation it's hard to know what actually may be real, although DR Jennifer appears to swallow the premise, hook line and sinker, for every reality show she watches. For a while I was hooked on all the Bravo shows, and they're just as bad and as ridiculous.

My favorite reality show has always been THE MOLE, and I applied to be a contestant on it during its first incarnation at the start of this century. It was more brain-oriented than physically challenging like SURVIVOR, so I'm sorry I wasn't selected.

I'm up and trying to figure out if I should cancel my Continental flight and book JetBlue, where I can get the seat assignment I want.  The problem with that is that I cannot get the memory of my last JetBlue experience out of my head - the nine-hour delay in NY, where they were so disgusting and where, I found out, they were not responsible for anything - you're totally on your own in these matters, and since I've never had a problem on Continental, I'll probably stay put and keep trying to change my seat on the flight back home.

Yes, it was drizzling in NY, and throughout the country (or so they said).  I know that the only airport having problems was JFK (Continental flies from Newark, where I've never had a problem).  I'm lucky I got out at all, but for those who know me, having to sit in the airport for nine hours was complete and utter hell, as they cancelled flight after flight and kept pushing us back.  At least our flight wasn't cancelled, simply because they needed our plane in Burbank, so we knew we would eventually get there.

I find it amusing that talk in last night's televised show centered around putting up Kevin and Lydia because, as Jesse and Natalie would claim, they've just been coasting.  I wracked my brain trying to figure out what Natalie has done that is any different from what Kevin has done.  And gosh...I can't think of a thing except she's crawled as far up Jesse's butt as she can go.  Neither she nor the loathsome (!!!!) Chima has done a thing but hang around Jesse and Russell.  That's what they consider "playing the game", I suppose.  Lydia has been maneuvering and spying and lying and conniving almost as much as, but nowhere near as successfully as, Ronnie.   Chima is one of most ludicrous-looking women I've ever seen on TV.  Her makeup is in very laugh-out-loud BAD TASTE.  Except for being HOH twice, and having to nominate people for eviction, I can't think of a thing Jesse has done, either, except sit around with his cronies and bitch about everyone else.  Just what, exactly, constitutes "playing" as opposed to "coasting"?  Kevin has voted with Jesse (and Natalie and Russell and Chima) every time, so he's actually been on "their team" the whole time, doing their bidding.

I am not a fan of Russell's, but I have hopes that he is not as retarded as I thought.  I'm very intrigued that it was he who proposed an alliance with Jeff.  I think this bears watching.  It may be ve VERY  interesting. My favorites are Jeff and Jordan.  Michelle is a close second.  Russell would be next on the strength of the lastest developments.  After that, I don't care.  Natalie, Jesse, Chima and Lydia are tiresome.  Kevin is ... something else.  What a sad sack of potatoes he is.  Haven't quite made my mind up about him, but thus far he's the one player doing NOTHING but being weird.

I want Jeff to get the "Coup d'Etat" power.  I've voted for him about 35 times.  I think it's really funny that Ronnie thinks he will be America's choice.  Who knows....they actually might.  After all...America chose Taylor Hicks and Jordin Sparks and Fantasia over much better singers in "American Idol".

End SPOILAGE

While it may have aired live when it was new, I think it's classified more properly as a "game" show.  Even though some of the current "reality" shows also have prizes and are games, we never had to learn about the private, personal lives and eccentricities of the judges or contestants.

I am very curious how many of the people here who detest "reality" shows, actually have ever watched any, and what do they consider to be "reality shows."

I myself have no problem being a fan of what I would consider "reality competition shows" which really are just game shows.

To flat out hate or detest "reality shows" seems to be very small minded, to me. I can certainly understand if you are not drawn towards these shows, like I am not drawn towards certain types of programs, but I would never say that I hate Shakespear or loathe CSI: Miami and it's ilk or detest soap operas.

This "reality" genre has been around since the beginning of television from QUEEN FOR A DAY to BEAT THE CLOCK to HOW TO BE A MILLIONAIRE to SURVIVOR. REAL PEOPLE, THE REAL WORLD, CANDID CAMERA...all of that you hate? I just don't understand this attitude.  It is like now when I talk people who "hate" anything in black and white or hate musicals.

I just think it is so much nicer if people keep an open mind to things, and it always shocks me so when HHWers do this.

Ok, I'm off of my soapbox and shall have another cup of Chock Full O Nuts coffee.

As for TV sets I would like to visit, frankly any set would be fun, for me. Even during the down time I could chat with performers or technichians. I have always had a fascination for filmmaking and had things in my life been different, I would have gone into a behind the scenes profession.

Of course DR JoseP and I are still planning to open the Bi-Coastal casting agency.

Does "What's My Line?" count as a reality show?  If it does, I'll choose that!

we never had to learn about the private, personal lives and eccentricities of the judges or contestants.

And you know, I think that is why I find many of these "reality" game shows so intriguing as I am always wanting to know more about the contestants. When I was recording episodes of THE NAME'S THE SAME and WHAT'S MY LINE I would often look up the contestants on Ancestry.com or Google and see if they were still alive, etc. A couple of times I even contacted relatives of the contestant to find out if they needed a recording of their mom or dad's episode. I just have this curiosity about people and love to know more about them.

Not that I watch them with any regularity but I don't consider "game shows" to be hard core reality shows. They have changed over the years to become more "real" but I don't hold them to the same level of disgust that I hold the other shows.

I find shows like Survivor, Big Brother, Real Housewives of ..., Flipped, etc. to be vile and a sad reflection of the dumbing down of American (or the world because they are just as popular in other countries) society. I don't need to watch a full episode of Real Housewives or Survivor or one of the other hard core shows to know that the genre will not grow on me and I'll become a fan. I've seen previews and segments of these programs and find the people so repulsive and ugly (inside soul kind of ugly, and yes, I know it's editing) that I can't imagine watching these vultures for a full half hour or hour or 90 minutes. To reward this kind of venal, hateful behavior with hundreds of thousands of dollars repulses me. If people choose to watch this stuff that's a choice they make. I choose not to watch it and I'm not being close minded just because I find the man on Big Brother who throws around the word "faggot" as a weapon to be a hateful sod. The fact that it wasn't broadcast over the air makes no difference to me. We are glorifying these people as if they are important. We reward people for mean, manipulative backbiting, vulgar behavior. There is enough horrible activity going on in the world. I don't need to see Gordon Ramsay cursing at someone and vilifying them because they didn't do something he thought they should do. I will not apologize or water down my disgust at the content of these shows and what they have done to civil behavior in general!

The only "reality" show that I would go on would not be any kind of contest or game show.  I would LOVE to be on "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List," just to be able to meet Kathy! ;)

That said, I agree with what Ben said...not as strongly, but I have no interest in people being famous (and getting paid for it) just for the sake of being famous.

At least Kathy Griffin is a stand-up comic and earns her money. :)

George-

How was Your Murder Mystery Evening?

Well...it could've been better:

Back from Dr. Chew.  I must say, the Novocain shot was the worst ever - he's really good, though, and pinches the cheek and moves it around while he's doing the injection, so at least he's good in the art of misdirection.  But he had the needle in there a long time and was moving it hithe and thither and even yon.  However, subsequent to that there was no pain anywhere while he drilled and filled the chipped tooth and put a temporary crown on it.  I'm quite numb right now.

I had to cancel lunch out today. I just wasn't physically up to it. I hoped a hot shower would help, but its effects were only temporary. So I fixed a little something simple here and watched HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA? I know, it's an old show, but I never watched it, so I thought I would. The GREASE show NBC did a couple of years ago was modeled on this, and it was CERTAINLY modeled on this down to stupid nicknames for the contestants, elaborate production numbers for the contestants that didn't have anything to do with the material they'd be having to perform if cast, etc.

Still, I always enjoy talent shows, and the girl who won was clearly the best of the three girls in the finals.

By then the mail had come, and so I put in today's work project: ELVIS PRESLEY: Classic Performances on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW.

It's only 47 minutes of music, and Elvis sings his big hits of the period (56-57) three times: once on each installment of the show where he guest starred: "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," "LOve Me Tender." I'm not sure he was ever great with patter, but he's lousy here, and keeps shading his eyes to see the audience, a complete neophyte. He also uses his guitar more as a prop than an instrument and breaks the mood of songs often with unexpected snickering. He also zips out of camera range at the end of songs rather than stand and bow.

The miking isn't great so many words and notes get lost in the lower registers of his voice or because he mumbles the lyrics.

But there he is: hale, hearty, healthy. Nice to see that image rather than the sad, bloated spectacle he'd become later.

There are bonus features taken from the show's archives that deal in some way with Elvis - promos, John Byrner's impression of Elvis (poor though he did a great Ed Sullivan). I still have some to watch.

I watched two Bette Davis-Miriam Hopkins films on Saturday:

"The Old Maid" -- very interesting.  First time I had ever seen it.  Hopkins was most restrained (sort of).  Very beautifully produced with a young Jerome Cowan as an almost-love interest for Davis (I miss seeing Cowan nowadays).  Max Steiner's score is curiously devoid of a memorable theme, IMO, but remains an appropriate part of the film.  I wanted to slap "Tina" silly many, many, MANY times.

"Old Acquaintance" -- This is the ONE...the all-time champeen headstrong-diva "wimmin's pitcher" model for "Rich and Famous."  In this one, Hopkins chews the scenery with verve and relish and Davis is stoic, dependable and downright mesmerizing.  LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Franz Waxman score.

I also watched "O. Henry's Full House".  Yes, it was an "O" Saturday.   The film didn't hold my interest for very long.  I had to skip around.  "The Last Leave" and "The Gift of the Magi" still seem the best of all the segments.  What a cast and what a talented pile of directors doing the segments!  Alfred Newman's score was among his least-effective, I thought.  Very saccharine/schmaltzy.

Were I to do the film, I'd shoot all of Dowd's scenes with Harvey using an actor in a blue rabbit suit.  The final result would be a natural reaction of Dowd interacting with an actual presence, but you'd never see the rabbit.

bk - As for your JetBlue trouble... I believe ALL the airlines were having weather-related issues that day. JetBlue was not the only airline "having" to inconvenience their passengers at that time. Additionally, almost all the airlines are NOT required to offer any sort of special assistance or compensation for weather-related delays or cancellations. "Act of God." However...

JFK does seem a bit more prone to delays than Newark - it's just a geographic thing. However, JetBlue's shiny new Terminal 5 is now fully open at JFK. New restaurants, lots of plugs and free WiFi, and even a spa! Makes those expected delays a bit more bearable.

I am a fan of many reality shows. Although to me there are different levels of quality.

My favorite reality show is The Amazing Race. Although i don't think i would do well without sleep. But i bet it would be fun.

My other favorites are Survivor, Top Chef, ANTM, Project Runway, So you Think you can dance, Dancing with the stars ... but since i'm not a model, fashion designer, chef or dancer i probably wouldn't go too far on these. :)

Re reality shows: I think I saw part of an episode of the original Survivor (before I switched channels) and part of an early American Idol (before I switched the channel). I will admit to watching that Grease one for a while when Julianna was on.

Maybe I don't have the attention span to watch tv any more. DR Sandra wonders how I make it through a musical.

And I am quite ashamed to admit it, but several years ago one afternoon I was switching channels looking for the local news, and something caught my eye. It was a lot of crying and wailing, so I stayed tuned to see what was going on. It was "Starting Over," a real train wreck of a reality show, that I watched for the next couple of seasons until it was canceled. I was glad it was canceled, because I got my time back.

I know what you mean, Laura.  I have trouble sitting through an entire movie.  I was so proud of myself on Saturday that I watched the entire THE TIME MACHINE (The original).

Wow, was Rod Taylor one handsome man in his day!

I can relate to what DR MBarnum wrote re: reality tv shows.

I think there are a lot of people who claim to despise them who have never even seen half the shows they proclaim to hate. If someone watches a particular one and dislikes it then i have no problem with that.

But how can people consider The Real World, Project Runway, and the Amazing Race the same. There is nothing about them that is similar.

To me the same way that every comedy and drama is different so is every reality show.

DR RonP, interesting to read your comments re: BIG BROTHER.

I also like jeff and jordan (although i don't love them).

re: chima - part of the reason her face is so odd/distorted is that she was i believe raped and i think her face needed some sort of reconstruction. That's what i read.

I do believe, however, that there is very little reality in reality shows. There is too much editing for that. I read interviews of the women on Starting Over after the series ended, and they said that what was shown was nothing like what really happened. The film was chopped up to be edited to make the story the producers wanted to tell.

I don't know what tv series sets i would like to visit. But i'm sure it would be interesting to see the set of any show that i watch.

Lost would be interesting since much of it is filmed outside.

The Young & The Restless would probably be interesting because i've been watching for a long itme and i think it would be interesting to see how small the various sets are.

T.O.D. (part 2)

LOST would certainly be a good choice, but I think I would stick with 24.  I am a big fan of Keifer Sutherland.

I hadn't thought about NCIS, but I would enjoy that, as well.

I agree with you Laura, that there is very little reality in Reality TV.  I don't have to watch an entire season of BIG BROTHER, HELL'S KITCHEN, THE BACHELOR or SURVIVOR to know that I don't enjoy the show.  Give me enough credit to know after an hour or so; if I like or dislike a show.  Game shows are not reality TV shows.  I enjoy watching games shows because I know that even if the screaming and jumping up and down mya be forced; the outcome is not being manipulated the way it is on reality shows.

Addressed more than half the packages, so that's good.  Am now watching more Lost episodes.  Of course, I haven't eaten a thing all day, but the novocain JUST wore off about thirty minutes ago (which tells you how much he injected) - actually it's not quite all gone yet, and now my mouth is pretty sore.  I think I may go to Jerry's have have soup or maybe some eggs - with the temporary crown I can't chew anything crunchy on that side of my mouth.  Clear sailing on the other side, though.

I would like to be on Color Splash or Divine Design with Candace Olson (meaning they would be redoing a room in my house), or just go with Guy Fieri (however you spell that) on Diners, Drive -ins and Dives.  Or be the dinner guest at Ina Garten's or any of the Food TV Chef's end of the show where they serve the food.

On the second (or third, I forget) season of SURVIVOR, one of the contestants fell into a fire. The cameraman stood there filming the entire event, and eventually someone from his tribe came to his rescue (he left the show due to his burns). The cameraman was interviewed and admitted that he wanted to help the guy but know it was forbidden by the rules. The producer of the show - Mark Burnett - added that if the cameraman had helped the man in the fire, he would have been fired on the spot!

Then I put in the Blu-ray of the fourth DIRTY HARRY film - SUDDEN IMPACT. Hadn't seen it in ages. Most of it worked OK except for the last few minutes which I've always thought were ridiculous - Eastwood standing on the boardwalk with his big gun in hand, and the three bad guys standing there quaking in their boots instead of firing every round in their guns they had at him. They LET themselves become sitting ducks due to his spellbinding visage. Bunk!

DR Jose, thanks for suggesting I keep the tomato sauce simple. I cooked up a test batch tonight and pretty much followed your suggestion.    I decided not to make a real spaghetti sauce, but just a tomato sauce I can be creative with later.   It tastes quite good, actually.  It's cooling and will go in the freezer before I go to bed.

I only used about 1/4 of the tomatoes that are ripe.   I also got the ingredients for salsa and guacamole.  I'll make some of that to just munch on.

I can't wait until the 13th when my new countertops, sink and most importantly working garbage disposal are installed!!

One really interesting thing happened at my reunion.  I ended up spending a long time talking to a former classmate who moved into my neighborhood when we were either freshmen or sophomores. We also lived near each other when I lived in Spirit Lake.   I always thought, in high school,  she didn't really like me, she thought I was a music nerd who wasn't interested in being friends.  We didn't have any problems we just didn't get to know each other.

So, here we are 30 years later and we had a great time.   She lives close to where my nephew lives in Wisconsin, so I'm going to contact her when I'm out there.  I'm sure I'll hear from her when she brings her kids back to visit grandma.

So, even though we didn't get to know each other when we lived 4 houses apart, it's never too late to make a friend. This made going back to the reunion totally worth it.

You're welcome, DR Cillaliz.  As for pizza "sauce", a bunch of "traditional" pizzerias just used crushed tomatoes, with a bit of minced garlic - all "raw", not cooked.  It cooks in the oven.

And there are some "real" spaghetti sauces that only use tomatoes, onions and garlic.  The one addition that seems to be bring it all together is the addition of cheese to the sauce - pecorino romano and/or parmigiano reggiano.  The cheese is the "salt", and acts as a thickener.

Finally, whether for a pizza or for spaghetti, the general rule of thumb is dried basil for long-simmered sauces, and fresh basil for a la minute preparations. The classic margherita is just tomato sauce, mozzarella, and fresh basil added as soon as the pie comes out of the oven.  *And those components also match the colors of the Italian flag: green, white and red.

Did I mention that my high school's mascot is the Midget?   I bought a midget blanket, just in case they are forced to change it some day

Interesting.  I used onion, garlic and tomato just as you suggested.   I did add some dried basil and a little other seasoning, but not much.   I didn't know it was better to use dried basil in a sauce, but that's what I used, so that's cool.

The fresh stuff almost goes "rotten" if used fresh. If not chopped up finely, the pieces can get slimy.  And the flavors of the herbs are more concentrated when dried too.

Looks like thunderstorms in the midle of the night again.  Last night my NOAA weather radio went off over and over and over.  I didn't get a lot of sleep.  I better try to sleep now, before the storms start again.

I actually had some fresh basil, but I got it before I left for the weekend and it was already going bad, so I used the dried.   Guess that was lucky for me

Had some mac and cheese for dinner (finally!) - it went down easily.  I'm taking a Lost break until tomorrow night.

I've been listening to the songs from the BMI Workshop Songbook (http://www.bmi.com/podcasts/songbook/).  I just got the actual songbook in the mail today!
