Well, you've read the notes, the notes felt like seven million pounds, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently sending a response to Mr. Dinther Helmut saying "Show me the MOOney."

Oy!  Scary flooding pics from DR JRand!

We had an incredible rainstorm on Friday and while my neighborhood is elevated and would never flood, I did have to drive through some deep-ish waters on the way home.  No damage to my car but I hate doing that.

Dinther's brother sent me 2 million pounds a couple of years ago.  I hoped it was money, but it was 2 million pounds of lint.  It's been in the alley ever since.

They wanted to ship me a brand new Mercedes from England. For free.  I only had to pay the shipping and dock charges.  I politely declined and suggested they just get me one that was already here.

When It Rains, It Pours Department:

Not only am I still struggling with some health issues, but I woke up this morning to find that my central A/C unit had died during the night. It was 79 inside the house at around 7 a.m. Immediately cut off A/C and opened doors and windows and turned on the attic fan. Got the house cooled down to 75, but that won't last long.

Got out the number of the heating/cooling place that installed this unit in 2001. The voice on the other end told me I had reached a FUNERAL HOME! Yep, the place had gone out of business!

So, I got a referral from best friend John about a reliable heating/cooling company and called them. They're expected between 1 and 3 p.m. today.

How much more good luck can one man stand?

Good morning, all!

DR ArnoldMBrockman, you asked yesterday about LITTLE DORRIT. I loved the series when it was on PBS this year, and I am assuming this is the DVD, with Claire Foy as Amy Dorrit, you were given. I thought the cast was wonderful, especially Miss Foy, Judy Parfitt, Matthew McFadyen, and Tom Courtenay. Russell Tovey as the jailer's son John moved me to tear with his unrequited love for Amy. It's a good creepy story of revenge and its consequences, a ponzie scheme, the idiocies of bureaucracies, and the stupidities and ingratitude of a class system. I recommend it highly.

Last night was not a good night. I tossed and turned from 10 pm to around 1 am, finally fell asleep after that to a need for more pain meds around 4:30, after which I had horrible nightmares until I forced myself out of bed around 9:15. I'm going to walk to the post office in a few minutes to mail some overdue packages, and tomorrow I think I will schedule a date with the barber. I am not going to let this megillah tie me down any longer.

Those of us who were watching LOST weekly were very dismayed by the Nikki and Paulo episode. Actually, I liked how their history on the island was retrofitted into past sequences from previous seasons, and the twisty ending was fun, but the episode was indeed a "marking time" episode that angered many people who were looking for answers to the many mysteries on the island and who didn't want yet another batch of characters introduced and making the story even more complicated. It was soon after this episode that ABC and the producers announced that there would be only three more seasons of LOST running in the second half of each season with no reruns between episodes so the writers could begin producing episodes with a definite end point in mind.

Regarding Nikki and Paolo - I remember well the animosity towards this episode when it first aired.  I also remember thinking "WTF?" about the episode itself.  I did like having Artz back, for those brief informative moments, but unlike the other far-fetched ideas put forth on LOST, I didn't find any real connections to reality with Nikki and Paolo. I wasn't bored by the episode, but left with the feeling of "Meh."

I had no problems with this episode at all.  I was very satisfied with how the creators decided to eradicate characters I did not like (in fact, I resented their sudden inclusion to begin with.)

DR MattH, are you obligated to review every DVD you receive, or just the ones you choose to review? I would swear that a friend of mine who reviews for THE AMERiCAN RECORD GUIDE reviews one out of ten, if not less.

Thank you all for the vibes! When this occurred in 2004, I had just joined HHW and, when the illness began with the abscess and then the leg problems, I virtually left HHW for a couple of months. I credit a lot of the speediness in this recovery to all the vibes and the ibuprofen!

I'm expected to either review what I'm sent or petition one of the other reviewers to do it. If I don't want to do it or no one else wants it, it doesn't get covered. I couldn't find anyone who wanted to do the last relase of THE HILLS. One season of that was all I EVER wanted to see.

"Big Brother 11" SPOILAGE

SPOILAGE

Dkfjfdsjafjkl afjslkj kfjksfdkljkj ldsafljkafklj ad;lfkj ;lkasjflk;jfdsal;kajfd There were several moments of total hilarity in last night's episode, although those who caused the mirth would be dismayed if they knew folks thought they were "jokes."  Russell made it clear to Jessie, Natalie and Chima that Ronnie was his target for eviction.  Those three then began their moves to convince everyone in the house to vote out Lydia, instead.  These are Russell's "alliance", as it were.  Chima, for bad or even worse, was supposed to be Russell's "girl friend", but she displayed no loyalty to him at all.

Jeff, Jordan, Kevin and Michelle are all likely to vote out Ronnie.  Michelle is seen as the swing vote.  Jessie, Natalie and Chima want Ronnie to stay (why is anyone's guess except they don't know he holds each of them in utter contempt).  Jessie and Natalie are green-eyed with jealousy over the fact that Russell granted Jeff a lot of his private time.  They know some sort of deal was struck during the HOH challenge, but they are now wondering what else could be going on.  After Michelle won the Power of Veto, Russell had a private meeting with her.  Jessie and Natalie were beside themselves.  They presume it's "their" business what Russell does.  And then, the funniest comment I think I've ever heard on this show was uttered by Jessie:

"What the **** does he want with her?  She's not even interesting!  H***, HE's not even interesting."  Natalie nodded vigorously in agreement.

Just wrapping my mind around this...that Jessie finds someone in the house UNinteresting and he surrounds himself with Natalie and Chima!!!!!!!  I mean, come on!  I expect Jessie to be self-centered, but I had no idea he was so delusional as to consider himself interesting!  He, Chima and Natalie have the personalities of a rock.  It's too funny.   Equally hilarious is that Jessie consideres himself to be "the brain" of his alliance.  ROTFLMAO.

Here's hoping tomorrow night's episode reveals Jeff or Jordan have won the Coup d'Etat!  That's MY hope, at any rate.

Strange things happen on this show all the time...and the breaks seem to fall in place for players I don't much care for more often than not.

I guess that's part of its charms.  LOL.  Xhkjdkjkjlfkljljk ;lkj kj lkjflkja;lskfj ;lkj ;lajdsf;lkjadsfk jsafdljkas;ldfj;l kjfsadjkasdf;lkjasfdlkjfsdk;lj as;lkjasdflk;j sdaf;lkjasdf;lk j;lkj a;ldkjjksf;lkjsdf ;lkasdf  al;kjf;lkja f  a jkldlkjdklj  akljkljfdsa;lkj asdf!!!

I had an opposite reaction.  I thought the episode was refreshing and fun.   Out of the plane's 40-plus survivors, the story lines are nearly all about Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Charlie, Michael & Walt, Sun & Jin, Sayid, John Locke, Boone & Shannon, Bernard & Rose, and Claire.   We "see" the other survivors, but seldom hear/see them interacting in a story line.

It was a nice change of pace for the show, IMO.  Sure...I was put off at first that the pace of the story arc had been brought to a standstill...but I found myself really getting immersed into the fact that all the other survivors have their points of view, as well, and I loved it that the writers/producers decided to offer a show from that perspective.

I don't suppose any point in the various arcs would have been convenient...but they seized a moment and it's part of the lore.

ASK BK -

Last night I watched the latest dvd transfer of TO CATCH A THIEF, so my first ASK BK question is:

Which of these romantic pairings with Cary Grant do you like the most?
Grace Kelly (TO CATCH A THIEF)
Audrey Hepburn (CHARADE)
Ingrid Bergman (NOTORIOUS)

To Catch A Thief for sure.

As for Nikki and Paolo: I liked that episode too.  As DR Ron Pulliam mentioned, it was cool seeing how the writers worked them into the plot - and "past" plots.  I was a little disappointed that the episode was basically a stand alone one - no cliffhanger - but there was also something nice about not having to keep track, not having to remember what happened from that week to the next.  Of course, then I had to remember what happened before that episode, so... ;)

ASK BK -

If you could enter a movie screen and inhabit the world of one Hitchcock film, what would it be? And why?

That's very difficult - I like the town and young Charlie in Shadow Of A Doubt, so that might be fun.  And North By Northwest would be fun, just to travel all those places.

I awoke to an e-mail from paypal saying a first-time Kritzerland buyer had initiated a chargeback on his cc for the two CDs he got from us a couple of weeks ago.  In the note, it says CDs were damaged or not as described, whatever the latter means.  I responded, of course.  This person never wrote me to tell of damage, and therefore never asked for a refund or replacement copies.  In my response, I said I found that odd, and while I have no problem doing the chargeback that it would at least be nice to know what the damage was, and if this person had any intention of returning the product that he says is damaged.  I then wrote the guy and told him I found it odd that he didn't contact us, copied him on my response, and said I'd like the courtesy of a response from him.  The worst that will happen is we'll refund the guy's dough, but I'm not approving it until he agrees to return the CDs (I'll pay for the postage).  Paypal, of course, has already put a hold on those funds, not that that's a big deal.

DR Jose, thanks for posting this! I think if the post offices were run more efficiently with an attitude of get-'em-in-get-'em-out, instead of the endless lines and waiting, they might not be in so much trouble. I've never had a long wait in a London PO and I think the US post offices are really inefficient. I love the automated postage machines and wish the 83rd Planetarium Station had a second one to ease up things.

I cannot believe the West Village and the Port Authority spots are on the list; those are congested areas of residents.

AARON TVEIT as NORMAN BATES in NEXT TO NORMAN (tune of "I Am The One")

Can you tell me why you're screaming in horror
Can you tell me is it because of me
Can I cut you
It won’t hurt for too long now
How could something be wrong, I just can’t see
‘Cause I’m just a nut
And I won’t let go
But hon you do not know

I am the nut who stalked you
I am the nut who stared
I am the nut who made you so scared
I am the nut who knifes you
And sure as I come from a long line of Tveits
I am the nut Norman Bates

Frankly, I was not that impressed and, unless I'm sent a Blu-Ray for review, I doubt if I will be adding any discs in that format to my library.

Yes, the picture and sound on Blu-Ray is somewhat better than your standard DVD, but not significantly better if that DVD is played on a Blu-Ray player connected to a flat screen TV.

Also, a Blu-Ray disc seems to take forever to load and, with this particular disc that I played last night, I was not only unable to watch the supplemental features, but I had difficulty ejecting the disc from the player.

Granted, there might have been a problem with this particular disc, but either way, I am not sold on this more expensive format.

How about "North by Northwest" for a Hitchcock film-turned-musical?

"Mr. Kaplan, We Presume"/"Call Me Roger, Fellas" (a duet)
"Bourbon and Brakes Don't Mix"
"A Murder in the U.N. Doesn't Translate"
"The Upper Berth Strain" or "The Pain from Train Stays Mainly Unexplained"
"Miss Kendall, You Got Some 'Splainin' To Do"
"The Cropduster Ballet"
"I Bid $4.95...No, Make That $3 Million...No, Wait..."
"Let Go of Lincoln's Nose and Take My Hand"

And The Grand Finale

"The Tunnel Of Love"

Loading times vary considerably depending on your player, as does the ability to access special features.  It sounds like maybe you have an older Profile 1 player.  I had horrible loading times on my first two BD players, including a fairly high end Sony.  It wasn't until I finally got a PS3 that loading times were negligible.  PS3's are Profile 2, which means you have access to all available features, including BD Live (which, at least so far IMHO, is fairly useless).

It would also help to know if he has his BD player connected with HDMI cables.  In my experience, movie lovers who make statements about the Blu-ray format in this manner don't have the player properly connected.

Of course, the movie matters, too.

I guarantee you would never make such a statement after seeing "Lost" in the BD format.  Or "The Robe".  Or "How the West Was Won."

DR MattH hope you get your airconditioning woes fixed!

Btw, on FOX tonight is part 1 of the SEASON FINALE of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE (which i believe is 2 hours).

Sounds like you should find a woman reviewer to do the shows you hate (like THE HILLS or the HANNAH MONTANA movie).  Heck, i'm even sort of curious about the latter.

There are no female reviewers on the staff at present. However, I never said I didn't like HANNAH MONTANA, and we've had this discussion MANY TIMES before about critics being able to evaluate the merits of a program whether they fit its predestined audience or not.

Next I watched BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. This is not one of the best of the John Carpenter-Kurt Russell pairings. Very tongue-in-cheek and silly, and Rusell, though he looks gorgeous, is too aware of the joke he and the director are trying to pull off.

This was pre-computer generated CGI monsters, and the monsters in this are ridiculously lame.

I have a question for the DRs:

How long will you wait at a doctor or dental office before you walk out? I had an appointment today for a dental cleaning. It's a brand new office and some disorder is to be expected. I arrived right on time. They were running VERY late, but the worst part was the attitude of the staff--completely blase. Do I want these people cleaning my teeth? No! I waited what I felt was a reasonable time, then reminded them what time my appointment was for and walked. They offered no apology whatsoever. I'm usually quite patient, but there is a limit. How long will YOU wait?

DR Jeanne - today I also had a bad experience with timing in a medical office.  My appointment this morning was for 8:30 and I was to fast for blood work (including no coffee).  It wouldn't have been too bad, even with my severe caffeine addiction, if they'd seen me quickly and sent on my way.  But, no-o-o-o, I waited more than 30 minutes to be called, another 15 or so for the doctor, and another 15 or so for the nurse to come back to take blood and to set up my referral for the ultrasound.  By this time, I'd been up for almost 4 hours was nearly ready to pass out, so came home for coffee and breakfast before proceeding to the imaging place.  When I didn't show up there immediately, the imaging place called the doctor's office who called me to find out where I was.  The person who called from the doctor's office just happens to be the doctor's wife and she said, "Well, now you'll have to wait when you get there."  And now, they haven't bothered to call me with the results of the ultrasound.  And I still have a residual caffeine-deprivation headache.

Good Evening!

The Good News: I'm back from dinner with DR elmore.  The conversation was sparkling, and the gossip was dish-icious!  -And I really think that DR elmore should write two books: 1) his memoirs, and 2) a very "friendly" textbook covering the orchestrators, orchestrations and the traditions of American Musical Theatre.

The Bad News: We had planned to dine at our beloved La Cocina for some Mexican food, but it appears La Cocina is no more, no mas.  The gates were down, and even all the signage had been taken down.  :(

The Good News: We ended up enjoying some wonderful Indian food at the new UWS location of Baluchi's (http://www.baluchis.com/) - which happened to take the place of the Hannafin's.

*And since Baluchi's is literally around the corner from DR elmore's place, DR MBarnum won't have to head into Queens for some good Indian food when he comes for a visit. In fact, since Baluchi's delivers, he wouldn't even have to leave DR elmore's apartment.  Although, I'm not sure if they're able to deliver to fire escapes. ;)

Budd Schulberg, ‘On the Waterfront’ Screenwriter, Dies at 95 (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/05/budd-schulberg-on-the-waterfront-screenwriter-dies-at-95/?src=twt&twt=artsbeat)

I've discovered that I have a storage space in the basement that I have never used. I think I will convert it to a guest room and, with luck, I'll never see DR MBarnum when he comes to visit.

DR Jose, the textbook idea sounds fascinating. Next time I see you, I must get you to elaborate on the concept.

My biryani shrimp was very tasty!

This is a bad tv night until "Top Chef Masters." I'm watching GHOST HUNTERS, but it's a boring show. Perhaps if the soundtrack would cut down the needless bumps, shudders, and groans in its unceasing tunelessness, we might hear something otherworldly on the actual soundtrack.

DR Ginny, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience at the doctor's today. I think they should realize when people have to fast for tests that many have severe reactions--some people can't safely fast! I also feel that many in the medical profession are lacking compassion and empathy. A friend and I were chatting about this earlier. I said that medical care could be greatly improved with just a change of attitude. It would still need improvement, but at least patients would feel that practitioners and their staff were really trying, really caring. Some are caring, of course, but there are so many blunders. It just frosts me. Enough of my opinion.

I hope you are home now and comfortable.

Oh...

So, after DR elmore and I parted ways on the corner of 82nd & Broadway, I actually decided to go ahead and walk up to 85th Street to see the shuttered La Cocina for myself... :-\

On the way back down Broadway, I stopped into the newly opened location Corner Cafe & Bakery - which is not related to the national chain, The Corner Bakery.  Outside, they had a whole bunch of dinner specials listed, but I also noticed that they had a bakery case, and it turned out that they have a very nice prepared foods case.  Well...

Since I had planned to walk back down Broadway to Columbus Circle, I decided to pick up a Blueberry Lemonade to sip while I walked.  They are "shelved" with no ice, but once you order it, they put ice in it.  Well, I thought I had noticed that when the counter person went to put ice in my drink, that she had dropped the lid on the floor... OK, she'll just get a fresh lid... Instead, she picked up the lid from the floor, then rinsed it off in the sink behind the counter... Hmm...

"Did you drop the lid?"
-Yes, I did, but I rinsed it.
"You really should have gotten a fresh lid. I know the food service rules."
-Well, I did rinse it off, so it's clean now.
"Well, you really should have just gotten a new lid. That would have been much easier, and the correct thing to do."
-Well... Would you like a fresh lemonade?
"Yes, I would. Thank You."

I could tell I flustered her, but I also know that rinsing something that fell on the floor is not going to "clean" it.  I really wasn't upset.  I just wanted it done right.

-And the Blueberry Lemonade was quite good too! A perfect drink for a stroll down Broadway on a summer night in New York City.

I don't disagree one bit.  It definitely is better.

I'm just saying that, in my opinion, the difference between playing a Blu-Ray disc and a regular DVD in a Blu-Ray player is not that anything to get that excited about.

If a Blu-Ray disc is a 10, then a good regular DVD in a Blu-Ray player is certainly an 8 or 9.

I usually do have to wait at the doctor's office. My dentist always schedules me first thing in the morning, so he's there waiting on me when I arrive. I've never waited there.

Oh, boy, I'll REALLY have to disagree about that. When I first got my PS3, the first thing I did was do an A/B comparison between THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA DVD and Blu-ray. I thought the DVD looked quite wonderful until I watched the Blu-ray. Night and day difference in clarity, sharpness, color density, and detail. I used "Masquerade" as my comparison sequence, and it was shocking to me how poor the DVD looked after seeing high definition.

I'd say the difference is Blu-ray 10 and DVD 6.

I have never walked out of a doctor's office though I have been tempted - I think the record wait was the three hours to get my feeding tube removed - what was most frustrasting about that was that they called me to come in early!!!

ASK BK

According to Arthurian legend Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones wrote over 100 songs that were not used in 110 In the Shade? If so, how many of these have you actually heard or know about?

I know you recorded quite a few of these numbers (about 6 I think)

They did, and I believe I've not only heard them all, but have them all on various cassettes.  And I think we've recorded over six, but I might be wrong.

No, it really depends on the disc.  If and when, for example, you get 2001, you will be blown away - the disc is a ten, and its DVD counterpart is probably a three.

I think I'll go for one more episode of Lost, Season Three this evening.  Two episodes ago they had a fun "twist" (which anyone with a brain could have seen coming a mile away).  Then, in the next episode, that story and twist is not even referred to at all - and that's BAD, oh, creators of Lost, because by the time you get around to returning to that story and twist I DON'T CARE anymore.  Whereas if the followup episode had continued with it, I would have been riveted.

Weren't there 180 songs written for My fair Lady?  Hence the famous rhyme 180 for My fair Lady.

To which particular twist are you referring?

Do any of our NYC cognoscenti know Leslie Orofino?  Will they tell her to contact me about her need for an accompanist out here on September 5?  She is very hard to get a hold of.

No, it's the "twist" SPOILER

Involving Juliette - where you think she's on Michael's side, and then see the flashback where she's talking to Michael Emerson, and it's clear she's doing his bidding still.  And then, in the followup episode, none of that is ever referred to - ridiculous.
