SPOILER SPOILER SPOLIER

I have been rereading Writer's Block. I have finished chapter 7 and then the next chapter (one) begins with "I was stuck. I had written the first EIGHT chapters..."  Was this an editing error? If not what was the reason for putting chapter 8 after chapter one?

Sorry to have been E&T for a day and a half or so.  The new Sept. 15th deadline for partnerships that are on extension (really, a majority do go on extension) has made the Sept/Oct tax season stretch back a little into August. It's likely to remain so from now on, but that's really OK, since it might spread out over an extra few weeks the intense pressure of the previous Labor-Day-to-Oct-15th mini-tax-season.

Title: Re: THE ROUSING NOTES

Good morning, all! I believe I once began watching "Endless Love" and gave up. I have no idea what happens after the first 30 minutes or so. It's my memory that Zefferrelli in his memoirs says he discovered Martin Hewett parking cars. He has fascinating but oblique things to say about several of his leading men.

Today, I tackle MOST HAPPY FELLA; my goal is to finish up the bass part, begin the Appendix numbers, hopefully finish them tomorrow, and liesurely type up the notes. I slept poorly again last night and i am quite groggy this morning; my left arm and shoulder are acting up and I have no idea if it's a part of my general malaise or a new presentiment of impending disaster. I'm hoping it's becauseof the awkward sleeping positions that the pain in my leg forces me to assume, but who knows? I'm trying to avoid thinking of my health intil August 24, when my doctor returns; my biggest goal bwetween now and Sept 1 is to make some money to pay off my debts as well as my impending IRS and NY State estimated taxes and health insurance; I think I'll either laugh hysterically or sob uncontrollably as I write that check.

Good vibes to DRs Jeanne, MattH for health, Ginny for family travails, JRand58 for a successful show, to BK for the dentist, and to all others for health, wealth, travel, whatever!

DR MattH, just read your posts about your not feeling well again. Hope you feel better. ~~~~~~

Btw, Re: your Y&R comments about chance and chloe (btw, how old is chance supposed to be anyways?? I thought he was way younger than chloe).

You haven't been watching the show that long. But when chloe was introduced she was one of the most hated characters on the show. She was mean and out for herself and didn't care who she hurt.

They had her trick cane into marrying her (and breaking it off with lily). And she was really a piece of work.

Then they added her on contract for 3 years and all the fans were wondering why (since she was really disliked).

But then the writers started changing how they wrote her. They let her become real. And the fans started responding. IMO it was when they told us that ester was her mother. For the first many months it was not revealed that chloe was really little kate (who used to be on the show many years ago).

To me this was the turning point for the character since ester is a good person and it made all the difference. Chloe still goes after things that aren't good for her. But she married billy to give her daughter a home (and she really loves him). So they toned her down a lot. And i actually really like her now and think she would be cute with chance.

I've been listening to Respighi's three wonderful chamber orchestra suites "Ancient Airs and Dances," and I want to know why the main theme of Set 2, No 4: "Bergamasca" sounds so much to me like a Western Movie theme rather than an Italian Renaissance tune.

Thanks for the backstory, DR Jennifer. I haven't gotten to the point of liking Chloe yet. Maybe it will come... :)

I think Chance could do better, but I don't know enough about the characters on the to make any suggestions. I just had a knee-jerk reaction to Chloe's pushing Chance into someone's arms. He's an adult. He can make up his own mind. He doesn't need ANYONE matchmaking. (As someone who endured this the entire time I was under my parents' roof, you might understand my distaste for such a practice.)

Thanks for all the good health wishes. I wish I could say they've helped, but in my case, they didn't. I was seized with terrible muscle spasm this morning and called my doctor only to be told there was nothing available until tomorrow morning, so I'll have to wait it out. Pain has subsided into a dull ache, but I am SO tired of feeling achy. Enough is enough.

Yes, we get your drift, bk. Franco Zefferrelli was gay and preferred showing men's bodies to women's. I'm not defending the practice, and certainly am not defending the wretched film that is ENDLESS LOVE, but you have to admit there are plenty of heterosexual directors who are like-minded in terms of showing female flesh and keeping the males in their movies covered.

That's how many of us gay guys feel when we're subjected to ENDLESS exploitive shots of the female anatomy in movies with no male anatomies in evidence.

Betsy's cousin, who is a caterer, flew into Portland with his family on Monday and they did some winery tours for his business so that he can write off the trip.  She didn't know he was actually in town yet, and had gone out on a client drinking meeting last night after work at one of the tony downtown hotels, when who should walk in but her cousin and his family, looking for hors d'oeuvres!  So that was kind of a neat little moment for Betsy.

Other family arrives today, and then tomorrow the big onslaught.  We had our rehearsal with the Rabbi yesterday and Gabe did great with his Torah portion and haftorah, and his D'var Torah is fantastic (including a very funny jab at Fox News, I might add).

I splurged yesterday and got a pretty expensive hand painted tallit for the occasion.

What I'm wondering now is if "S. Lawrence" is "S. Lawrence," if you know what I mean.  He was writing some material then, notably that kind of catchy (and similar) tune Steve and Eydie did with the Osmonds called "We Can Make it Together."

I can tell you that Lawrence and Hart both worked on music for "Sesame Street."  Hart died in 2006 from cancer.  He was born in 1938 and Lawrence was born in 1939.

Couldn't find a professional listing of their actual songs together in one place, but here is a link to  Google  (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Stephen+Lawrence%2C+Bruce+Hart&aq=f&oq=&aqi=) that has a number of different songs/jobs they did together.

Bobby Hart was born "Harshman" in Phoenix AZ.  Hart is a professional name for him.

Bruce Hart was born "Hart" in New York.

I also found a smattering of other tunes they did in various internet searches.  Love One Way Ticket--nice alternation between iii and bIIImajor, one of my favorite compositional tropes (along with the similar vi/bVImaj).  In fact bVImajor pops up in One Way Ticket, too, but you all already knew that.  :)

Well... Two weeks from today will be - is? - my birthday.  -And DR JRand's birthday too.

My youngest brother, Jay, just made plans to come back East for a couple of days since he was able to clear the days off from work.  His girlfriend - soon-to-be-fiancée(??) - will also be making the trip, and her birthday falls on the 22nd.  So, Jay was hoping to have some sort of joint birthday celebration with the whole family. -This will actually be the first time that all four Simbulan boys will have been together since the Christmas of 1997.  -That's also the last time that Jay has seen his niece, Emily.  So...

I hadn't made any real plans for how I wanted to spend my birthday this year, but I was thinking of just doing something like I did last year - just walking around the city and meeting up with friends during the course of my travels.  But I'd also like to head down to VA to spend time with my family.  So...

Planning, planning.

If it weren't for the kindness of Crown Int. this film would likely still be sitting on a shelf, unreleased and gathering dust.

The lost art of reading

The relentless cacophony that is life in the 21st century can make settling in with a book difficult even for lifelong readers and those who are paid to do it.
By David L. Ulin
August 9, 2009

Sometime late last year -- I don't remember when, exactly -- I noticed I was having trouble sitting down to read. That's a problem if you do what I do, but it's an even bigger problem if you're the kind of person I am. Since I discovered reading, I've always been surrounded by stacks of books. I read my way through camp, school, nights, weekends; when my girlfriend and I backpacked through Europe after college graduation, I had to buy a suitcase to accommodate the books I picked up along the way.

(B)ooks enlarge us by giving direct access to experiences not our own. In order for this to work, however, we need a certain type of silence, an ability to filter out the noise. Such a state is increasingly elusive in our over-networked culture, in which every rumor and mundanity is blogged and tweeted. Today, it seems it is not contemplation we seek but an odd sort of distraction masquerading as being in the know. Why? Because of the illusion that illumination is based on speed, that it is more important to react than to think, that we live in a culture in which something is attached to every bit of time.

Here we have my reading problem in a nutshell, for books insist we take the opposite position, that we immerse, slow down

These days, however, after spending hours reading e-mails and fielding phone calls in the office, tracking stories across countless websites, I find it difficult to quiet down. I pick up a book and read a paragraph; then my mind wanders and I check my e-mail, drift onto the Internet, pace the house before returning to the page. Or I want to do these things but don't. I force myself to remain still, to follow whatever I'm reading until the inevitable moment I give myself over to the flow. Eventually I get there, but some nights it takes 20 pages to settle down. What I'm struggling with is the encroachment of the buzz, the sense that there is something out there that merits my attention, when in fact it's mostly just a series of disconnected riffs and fragments that add up to the anxiety of the age

When I was a kid, maybe 12 or 13, my grandmother used to get mad at me for attending family functions with a book. Back then, if I'd had the language for it, I might have argued that the world within the pages was more compelling than the world without; I was reading both to escape and to be engaged. All these years later, I find myself in a not-dissimilar position, in which reading has become an act of meditation, with all of meditation's attendant difficulty and grace. I sit down. I try to make a place for silence. It's harder than it used to be, but still, I read

And even in just showing skin...I mean there are so many examples of women wearing almost nothing and the men are fully clothed!  That's just not right! >:(

And other than the commentary, most of the bonus features were pretty superficial compared to the usual Criterion gems. Of course, this is an American made studio picture (Universal), so the EPK and trailers were all the PR division's doing and reproduced by Criterion.

A very frustrating day in some ways: I'm caught waiting for some answers from MTI about MOST HAPPY FELLA materials before I can finish the show, and that leaves me sitting around wondering how to proceed.

On the positive side, I've hired by super's grandson, who's visiting from Belgrade, to come in next Wednesday and help me take books off a couple of bookshelves, some of which I will pack up for Miami University,  so we can line the bookcases straight against the wall again before they collapse and my handyman George, who secured the other wall of bookcases after their collapse in 2004, can secure them to the wall. The only dilemma at the moment is how I'm paying the kid and George, but at some point I should be getting paid from the Liz Callaway work and maybe another job - although I doubt it will be the LoC.

At last, some good news today! My publisher just sent me an email with an inquiry from the Babylon Chorale of Amityville, NY, about a Yiddish or Hebrew text for my arrangement of the Hanukka song, "Likhtelekh," which I did for my publisher with a new English text. So far, for this holiday concert season, I have the following works being performed:
The Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus is performing the orchestrated version of "Twelve Days of Christmas"
The Hampton Roads Men's Chorus (Norfolk, VA) is performing both the orchestrated
versions of "The Virgin's Slumber Song" and "Trois Noels Francais"The Orlando Gay Chorus is performing the piano-vocal version of "The Long Christmas Dinner"
The Capital City Men's Chorus (Austin, TX) is performing "A Joyful Noise" (the orchestrated version)

And it isn't even September yet! I see a nice royalty check in 2010.

And how old is this grandson?

Old enough that I know you're not going to meet him.

What a fascinating day.  I arrived for my nine-thirty dentist appointment and was told that I had no dentist appointment until next Monday, the 17th.  I found that decidedly odd, but I wasn't unhappy and I left.  When I got home, I looked at my appointment card, and the way this gal had made a 7 looked just like a 2, hence my thought that the appointment was today.  I then did a boatload of errands and whatnot, then had lunch, then remembered I have to be on a panel this evening for my pal Barbara Deutsch.  So, I now need to get ready for that.  I don't know why, but something made me think of Barbara this afternoon - had I not, I never would have remembered.  I really must start looking at my iCal every morning.

We have been to the hospital for our daily visit.  When we got home I fixed a nice dinner of baked salmon, mac & cheese,  and broccoli.  We're thinking of going out later to try to see the meteor shower.

Thank you, DRs TCB and Elmore, for asking about John.  It has seemed to me the past two days that his face is slightly more animated and he's slightly more responsive.  Still far, far from conscious and still dependent (although not 100%) on the ventilator.

However, I do think this photo offers an adorable young lad playing the role of "THE LITTLEST ANGEL", December 1956.

Good Evening!

A few hours ago, I went to The Museum of the City of New York (http://www.mcny.org) to attend tonight's installment of "The Speakeasy at 1220 Fifth".  The MCNY basically sets up a "speakeasy" each Wednesday night.  They have bar stations set up serving classic cocktails - including Manhattan's, of course - and a DJ spinning tunes from the 1920's and '30's. And, yes, people were dancing.  Some even came in costume - flapper dresses and very dapper suits.

*The "Speakeasy" is not free.  It's $12 for non-members and $10 for members, however, that also includes one free beverage of choice, and since the cocktails run $10, it all evens out nicely.  Additionally, the galleries on the first two floors are opened for those attending the Speakeasy.

It was. Although, since the museum's hallways were not "made for music", the volume of the music actually was on the loud side.  I met up with a fellow Twitterer - @NewYorkology - and we actually had to move around a few times in order just to hear each other.  All that marble just makes the sound bounce and bounce and bounce.

But since the Speakeasy is held on Wednesday, and since the last one is being held on August 26th... Well... Hmmm...

I was hoping to catch some of the meteor shower here in NYC tonight, but it looks like we're going to have cloud-cover during the overnight hours tonight.  Although, with all the "light pollution" from The City, I'm not sure just how much I'd be able to see.

Actually, "NYC On $5 A Day" is possible. Maybe even "NYC on $4 A Day".

Franklin, Ohio, is a pretty happening place this week.  That's where the flower shop was destroyed by fire on Monday and today we had to detour around the clean-up/investigation of THIS (http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/police-man-shoots-leg-crashes-pickup-246082.html).  It took place on a stretch of road that John's wife and daughter often take on their way to the hospital.  Fortunately, his wife went the back way today and his daughter was already there.

Matt, I am so sorry.

Comfort vibes to you.

Thank you. DR TCB. I appreciate the concern.

Tonight I continued watching DOLLHOUSE episodes. I watched three more of them which let me finish disc one in the three-disc set.

In the first, Echo was programmed to be a rock singer who was also a bodyguard for a famous young rock star who was being stalked.

The second episode had Echo programmed to be an expert safecracker, but her memory was erased midway through the caper and she had to be saved (rather unconvincingly, I thought; the weakest episode yet).

The last of the three episodes had Echo as a religious cultist working undercover to find out if the cult leader planned anything warlike. The cult leader was played by the ever-gorgeous Brian Bloom.

Woo hoo!! I was so worried about taking out the countertops. I came home from work and started taking out the plumbing before Chris and Edith arrived.  I unhooked all the clips holding in the sink and did every thing I could on my own.   Chris came.  disconnected the disposal took out the sink and after about 5-10 minutes of thinking and 5-10 minutes of working. It was done!

What's amazing is between the two of us, me not knowing what I was doing and he knowing  what to do, it took us about 30 minutes to remove it all.  For that they wanted $460 dollars! Good lord that's a high hourly rate.

Anyway, I'm still going to vacuum behind all the cabinets before I go to bed, who knows when or if I'll ever see back there again.  I may as well get the dust out of there.

When I lived at the lake, I used to watch the meteor shower every year.  All I had to do was walk outside my door and look up.   Here, I might be able to see it in town, but would probably have to get in the car and sit in the middle of nowhere.   That's more fun with someone.   Think I'll stay home

Derbrucer's post talked about slowing down to read.   I find it hard to even slow down enough to watch a 2 hr movie.  I always thought that when I finally lived by myself, I would do all the things I had been putting off till that time.  But now it just seems things consume more of my time, and none of them are what I had always planned.  It truly dumbfounds me.

Just a silly thought from yesterday about technology and gadgets.   My kid's generation was introduced to electronics at about age 3, none of them ever showed fear of pushing a button to see what it does.  Technology came very easily to them.  If all that was taken away, would they know what to do with their time.  If I wanted to talk to someone we had a slumber party or walked to the mall.  Now they just stay connected with a gadget in their hand.

I can't sleep.  I feel like a kid waiting for a new toy.   The installers will be here in about 5 1/2 - 6 hours and I can't sleep at all, lol.

Well, I should say I was asleep, but Boo decided to be a wild woman and woke me up running around.  So, I'm now awake

Ok, time to try the sleeping thing again

I think that's good advice for me, too.
