And now I have to restart my computer, then I can import all my iTunes songs from my old computer...it took four, count 'em FOUR blank discs.  That's probably not a lot, compared to others here.

Not listening to anything right now but I will plug into the Beeb soon.

We may start watching Lost Empires this weekend, a Masterpiece Theatre/Granada Television series from the mid-80s. We began watching it and for various reasons (wonky discs and then a wonky DVD player) we never were able to finish. Now that we have our new player we will begin watching from the beginning.

Last night we watched the bonus features from Sleeping Beauty (thanks Larry) and finished the bonus features from Pinocchio (Anthony gave me the DVD for our anniversary).

We also have The Good Companions which Ant's mother recorded from Turner a few weeks ago.

I have been moved to my temporary space. It will be perhaps two weeks of time. I won't be around much (it's still early which is why I'm posting) since I'm now in an open space with 4 other people. As much as people make jokes about cubicles they do offer a modicum of privacy. It was easy to take a two minute break and hang out here but now in the open with 4 (or more) people surrounding you the focus is on work.

Ah, well. Perhaps in the next two weeks I will be more productive.

Bye for now.

I wish I could say I passed a better night last night, but I'd be lying if I did. Still only got about three or four hours of sleep. Still, the pain did seem about 1/4 less severe than it had been the last few mornings. I hope that level of ache can continue to improve as I work my way through the six days of steroid dosing.

I've already taken my shower and cleaned up for the day, but naturally won't head out on Friday errands until closer to noon. I'm going to head down in a little way and recommence with NCIS.
Title: Re: APT
Post by: Matt H. on August 14, 2009, 05:27:04 AM
Interesting that NCIS was so popular last year that CBS ordered 25 episodes rather than the usual 22 that most series get for a full season order. I am enjoying the shows and really think adding Rocky Carroll as the new NCIS director (after they killed off - deservedly - the poor Lauren Holly) improved the season considerably.

Good morning, all! I slept soundly from 11 to around 1:30, and then i was up and down to the bathroom or wide awake most of the night. Around 6 or so I slept very heavily until 8:45. I absolutely hate it. I did have one weird dream combining a Jiulliard student concert, a lost number from PORGY & BESS, the great coloratura soprano Reri Grist, and a frightening murder; it was bizarre.

Today, I'm going nowhere; I have things to do at home: MOST HAPPY FELLA, checking the LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 scores, Brent's Christmas album. I've also been going over the new full score to Kern's OH BOY! with a fine-toothed comb; we have decisions to make in the PHI office about it. This is my life for the weekend.

TOD:
DVD:  A BBC 2-disc murder mystery and a ghost story anthology from Netflix, several operettas

I wonder how apt it is that the abbreviaton for the word "apartment" is "apt".

What would have happened, I wonder, if Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond had been in an abbreviated mood and had penned/directed/released "The Apt" instead of "The Apartment"?
Title: Re: APT

A word of caution to Mr. Bruce Kimmel regarding his DVR and setting recordings:

Some channels (some, mind you) don't necessarily start a program exactly when the channel guide says they will.  And some programs (mind you) don't necessarily end exactly when the channel guide shows them to be ending.

What you may get is a few minutes of pre-programming, followed by the program, and then you might find you may not get the last few minutes of the program,  This can be VERY annoying.

Not all channels -- NAY! Not even "most" channels -- do this thing.  Most are ultra-reliable.  But...you need to be aware of possibilities.

If there is something you absolutely do not want to miss one minute of -- something that might turn you into some unseemly raving individual if you missed a minute of it -- I recommend you go into the "set recording" mode and add a few minutes on the front and at the end...just to be CERTAIN.

This I do not know.  There must be a manual of some sort that may give insight into whether you can adjust the settings for the sort of signal you wish to record.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And if it weren't for the cops pulling people over almost every 15 minutes last night, I probably would have gotten a more decent night's sleep.  -My bedroom is on the street-side of the apartment, so the briefs bouts of sirens and the "christmas lights" were a bit distracting.  Sadly, I believe the reason for the extra police presence last night was due to the fact that an 8-year old boy was accidentally killed by a taxi just a couple of blocks from my 'hood yesterday.  And there was also some sort of police investigation going on in the 125th Street subway station yesterday afternoon, that ended up "express-ing" the trains for a couple of hours.

This does drive me crazy.  And unfortunately, if you want to use the "express pass" setting to record a show's whole season, my box doesn't allow you to add the extra minutes before and after.  So you have to manually set it up each week to record each new episode.    :(

I believe I have told my own little Jonathan and Darlene story.  I knew there were two CDs available, but had never been able to find them.  This was years and years ago before the internets were such a daily part of life.  Well Betsy had a business meeting in the tiny town of Port Townsend, Washington.  Gabe was still a baby.  On her meeting day I put Gabe in his stroller and took a walk through the small but lovely downtown block or two and found a tiny (like maybe 15 feet by 40 feet) record/CD store.  I walked in and there in the "cheapie" box on the front counter were the two J&D CD's.  I couldn't believe it.  I asked the owner how he got them and he said someone had special ordered them thinking it was the "Sunshine" Jonathan Edwards, LOL.

Continuing yesterday's TOD....I could find only one song from this couple on You Tube....it is not my favorite, but it is typical.

The inimitable piano and vocal stylings of Jonathan & Darlene Edwards

Thanks for this!  I have both their albums.  Love it!!!!    :D

I see I arrived late to the party. I played Jonathan and Darlene Edwards' recordings throughout the late 1960s just to drive college roommates insane. I loved the Mitch Miller parody. The first album was so understated that people bought it (a la Eddy Duchin albums( thinking it was another lounge classic and returned it because the pianist stank. The second recording, "I Love Paris," was much broader, and still my fave.

The Carioca.

This was used as the backing track to the opening credits of some move.   Sorry; can't remember now which one.

I think her recording of "Moonlight on the Ganges" was used over the opening credits of something like "Kentucky FriedMovie" too.

I read that "The Carioca" was used over the opening credits to "The Kentucky Fried Movie".  Of course, the source was YouTube...but the write up was very thorough and seemed to have been written by a die-hard Jo Stafford fan.

My memory is that Ruth Hossack of Hossack's Jewelry and Records had turned me on to Jonathan and Darlene because I had bought every Anna Russell recording she had in stock - I'm still missing one and the CDs are incomplete - and I was raving about Mrs Miller to her.

I liked Ruth Hossack a lot, even though we were poles apart politically. She was crazy, a John Birch Society member, ultra-conservative, hater of anti-war protestors and blacks, yet we talked records, releases, and repertoire, and she clearly liked me because she was very generous in her discounts to meand even hired me the summer of 1970 to work the store. She had gotten so enormous that she spent her days in the apartment above the shop drinking gin and spending a lot of time in the tub because the water relieved the pressures her avoirdupois subjected her skeletal frame to. We had few customers during the day and an enormous stock that collectors from all over the country purchased, so she wopuld call me on the phone and tell me stories about record salesmen, artists she'd met, how she lost 100 lbs on a diet of shrimp and gin, and other matters.

Her husband was a wonderful jeweler and a very kind and patient man.

I have always set an extra minute before and after a program that I record on my DVR...ESPECIALLY if it's something that I'm going to keep and burn onto a DVD.  I'd always done that with my VCRs (I never used the VCR+ system) and continue to do that with my DVRs.

My digital cable box allows me to choose the resolutions I want the shows to be recorded in. I think the setting is called "Resolution" but I'm not sure about that. It's also located in the setup section of the main menu

PUSHING DAISIES (season one)

KISMAT KONNECTION (Rashid Kapoor doesn't age, though his leading ladies do)  Quite a nice piece of fluff.

PSYCHO (from the Masterpiece Collection box);  I once had a roommate who couldn't make it through PSYCHO; it made him 'nervous,' and he didn't even make it to the scenes at The Bates Motel. . .I'm hoping for this one to be remastered for a Blu-Ray release.

Oh, it is Jose! I thought that Sidney Poitier had joined HHW.

I am hoping that due to BK's mention of finally "cracking a hard nut" we will finally be getting A TIME FOR SINGING.

Has it been mentioned here before and does it need to be mentioned again that Jonathan and Darlene are indeed Paul Weston and Jo Stafford.

Arnold, Arnold, Arnold, how many times do we have to tell you to post SPOILER WARNINGS?

I am a big Jo Stafford fan & would never have known it was her.  For her to sing that bad must have been very, very difficult.

DR George, does your library offer an online link to previous books checked out?  I would like to find my personal history & can't.

Well, we have a link on our home page for "My Account."  From there you can see what items you currently have checked out; what items have holds; what fines, overdues or notices you have...but not what previous books you have checked out.  For the most part, once a book (or CD, DVD, etc.) is checked in, that information is deleted.  If the library kept that information, the guv'ment could subpoena that information and use it for nefarious reasons.  Libraries are all for freedom of information, but an individual's privacy is just as important.

Thanks George.  I guess I won't be researching my book reading history.  From now on I should indicate, in my "books I have read" list which came from the library.  If I like a book I keep it, and of course can't do that if I checked it out from the library & don't always remember how I got the book I read.

Now, Larry, how can you tell us stories like this without your memoirs being closely behind?

Interesting that NCIS was so popular last year that CBS ordered 25 episodes rather than the usual 22 that most series get for a full season order. I am enjoying the shows and really think adding Rocky Carroll as the new NCIS director (after they killed off - deservedly - the poor Lauren Holly) improved the season considerably.

They kill off Lauren Holly? Oh no! I just starting watching the reruns

Hi, Jane. I'm doing better, thanks. I'm currently renting a room from a friend. It's cheaper than renting an apartment, and  I have use of a WASHER AND DRYER! Yay! That was a big factor. Also, it's a win-win, as my friend was glad to have a bit of extra income. You could say that said friend is DF&H#4, although I am paying rent. The house is down near the Marina, so it's cool.

It is very important to eat before taking pain meds.  You can also ask your doctor for anti-nausea meds.  I find it helps to take them with the food, prior to the pain meds.

Oh, it is Jose! I thought that Sidney Poitier had joined HHW.

Well.. Guess who's coming to dinner?

Well, that's not entirely true. I did watch the bonus featurette on disc five which detailed the location shooting on an episode that involved several of the regulars riding horses in rugged terrain.

I have five more episodes plus a commentary and two more bonus featurettes. I should be able to be finished with the set by this time tomorrow night.

DR George - You went last Wednesday?!?!  And... ???

Well, it was pretty good.  For the most part, the performers were very good.  The woman playing Frank's mother has a great voice, but her French accent leaves a little to be desired.  Aaron Tveit was great and really carried the show well.  Norbert Leo Butz was great as Hanratty (especially after what happened to his sister (http://winwab.com/2009/07/norbert-leo-butz-sister-teresa-butz-stabbed-to-death/) :'().  He has a lot of patter songs and can spit out the words like anything.  Tom Wopat sounded great and sings the only song that I had heard before seeing the show, "Fifty Checks," (which is on his new solo CD that was being sold in the lobby, as was Kerry Butler's CD).  I really enjoyed the music.  It all seemed very much in the 1960s style and very catchy.  Some songs were better than others.  My friend Rob thought that there were about six or seven really good songs and the rest were okay, but I really enjoyed the whole score.

I neither saw the movie nor read the book, so I don't know what was missing, but the book seemed to be a little disjointed...but just a little.  And at the top of the show, it starts with the NBC peacock on the giant screens (like the recent Sunday in the Park With George) like it's going to be a TV special on the life of Frank Abagnale, Jr., but then abandons the concept.  Nothing else about it is mentioned for the rest of the show.

Overall, I'm certainly glad I went, but the concensus of what I was hearing during intermission and after the show was that it was good, but not great...yet.  It still needs a little work, but could definitely be worth it. :)

I watched a part of the BBC series FALLEN ANGEL and decided I would rather read the books by andrew Taylor, which I will order from Amazon. Then I watched a ghost story from the SHADES OF DARKNESS anthology, "The Lady's Maid's Bell" based on one of Edith Wharton's ghost stories. I thought the tv version made more sense thatn Miss Wharton's tale, which I read about two weeks ago. There were some creepy moments, but the creepiest BBC ghost story I've ever seen is THE WOMAN IN BLACK, and that's really frightening.

So, i think I will have some tea and a little snack before I go to bed.

Beware the cheeky crasher squirrel (http://www.canada.com/technology/Banff%20squirrel%20photo%20gets%20huge%20attention/1889605/story.html)!!!!!

I suppose it won't be long before we see him wearing Aretha's inaugural hat!

That's so funny! Ten years ago we vacationed in Banff  and took a boat ride on Lake Minnetonka
we kept trying to get shots of the ground squirrels and they kept hiding intheir holes

Thank you to DRs Jane and TCB for your wishes for my brother-in-law John.  I'd hoped that the quietness of the day was a good sign, but it was just the opposite and we've just come from the hospital.  Without going into a lot of detail, I'd like to ask for vibes and prayers for strength for his family and comfort for him.  This weekend is not going to be easy.

Will do.  You've got 'em Ginny!

I'm at my sister's house on her computer.  I was going to do laundry here, but I started watching TV and didn't get it started early enough, so now at almost midnight, it's too late.  Not that I have to worry about being too loud for apartment neighbors (like at my place), but because I don't want to stay up that late.  So, I'll do laundry tomorrow.

Otherwise, feeding all the cats wasn't too much of a hassle...an inconvenience, but not a hassle.  I went home and got my laundry to do and said good night to my cat, then I came to my sister's house.  Fortunately, her oldest cat Casper (he's probably 13 years old) hadn't peed in the house!  I let him out and unpacked my car and read my niece's instructions again.  I let Casper in when I left to go to my friend's house to feed her two cats and her bird.  Oh, I forgot that I'm also feeding a bird along with the seven cats.  Anyway, they were all fine and dandy.  I then went to my sister's boyfriend's house to feed his cat and he was fine.  I came back to my sister's house and Casper had pooped(!) in the hall...just about 20 feet from the downstair bathroom and his litter box. :P Fortunately, my sister's downstairs is all concrete (with in-floor heating) so it was VERY easy to clean up.  I watched a bit of TV and am now upstairs in the bedroom with the computer.
