And here, as promised, is our new release announcement, for your eyes only.  I'm totally in love with this CD and I'm hoping it will appeal to many of you, given that half of it should be of interest to musical fans.  As always, if you'd like to get a jump on the pre-ordering (we'll be officially announcing on Thursday morning, and I'm expecting this to do very well), just pay directly via paypal.com to our paypal address of kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  It's the usual $19.98 plus 3.75 shipping.

“THERE WAS THIS REAL RELIGIOUS GIRL…”

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition –  a double bill of two never-before-released on CD soundtracks on one CD –

Gaily, Gaily, music composed and conducted by Henry Mancini
The Night They Raided Minsky’s, music composed by Charles Strouse.

Gaily, Gaily is the 1968 film version of Ben Hecht’s fictional memoirs about coming of age in 1910 Chicago, and his beginnings as a journalist and author.  The film was directed by Norman Jewison (coming off an incredible run of hits with The Cincinnati Kid, The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, In The Heat Of The Night, and The Thomas Crown Affair), and starred Beau Bridges, Brian Keith, Melina Mercouri, Hume Cronyn, and a very young Margot Kidder.  Henry Mancini provided the absolutely delightful score.  As was his wont back then, the album was a rerecording – it contains all the film’s themes, but not the actual film tracks.  The movie’s main theme, “Tomorrow Is My Friend,” is one of Mancini’s most beautiful and haunting melodies – it’s heard here in several variations, including a beautifully sung version by Jimmie Rodgers (the lyrics to this and the film’s other songs are by Marilyn and Alan Bergman).  The album also included a recitation by Melina Mercouri, accompanied by Mancini’s underscore.  As always, Mancini’s music is tuneful, memorable, and altogether wonderful.

The Night They Raided Minsky’s is the story of an innocent Amish girl who comes to New York in 1925, gets involved with a burlesque troupe at Minsky’s Burlesque, and inadvertently ends up inventing the striptease.  The film was directed by William Friedkin (his second, after the Sonny and Cher picture, Good Times), and starred Jason Robards, Norman Wisdom, Britt Eklund, Bert Lahr, and Harry Andrews.  It was a troubled film – Bert Lahr died during shooting, the first cut was, by all accounts, one of the worst first cuts in the history of film (so said David Picker, head of United Artists), Friedkin wasn’t around at all in post-production, and producer Norman Lear left the film in the hands of editor Ralph Rosenblum to fix.  It took Rosenblum a year, but fix it he did – restructuring scenes, shifting them around, using stock footage – he transformed Minsky’s from disaster into hit.  The score was by the great Charles Strouse, who’d written the Broadway shows Bye Bye Birdie, All-American, Golden Boy, and It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s Superman (he’d go on to write Applause, and the smash hit, Annie), as well as the score to the film Bonnie and Clyde.  With his lyricist, Lee Adams, he wrote several really clever and catchy songs for the film, as well as a bunch of clever and catchy themes to go with them.  It’s a wonderfully melodic score, and features vocals by Rudy Vallee, Dexter Maitland, Lillian Heyman, as well as the film’s stars, Jason Robards and Norman Wisdom.

It’s a tuneful, toe-tapping, and terrific double bill – the kinds of scores they simply don’t write anymore, by two great composers – Henry Mancini and Charles Strouse.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the end of September – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

BK, it's nice that you enjoyed your sixth grade reunion.  I never went to any of my high school reunions.  This year would've been 25 years.  I don't know if they had a reunion or not.  Anyway, it's not that I had a horrible experience or hated everyone in my class, but most of my friends were in choir (I had two choirs every semester for all four years), and most of them were in classes before or after me.  Very few friends of mine were from my class.  So, I don't really have a reason to go to the reunions. :-\

Topic of the Day:  the only thing that I can think of that I had during high school that I still have is the wooden Rubik's cube that I made in wood shop.  My friend Andrew (one of my few friends from my class) had a Rubik's cube that he let me take apart.  I used the plastic middle piece from the middle and made the outside squares.  I didn't color them different colors for each side...I just left the wood its natural color.

TOD

I have absolutely nothing from my high school days. I have severed all connections to the school as they were painful years and the memories are still not happy ones. The school I attended was perfect it you were a WASP, but if you were Chinese, Black, French Canadian Jewish or Catholic you were picked on, beaten and ridiculed. The Jews and the Chinese were at the bottom of the list.

The new cd is a buy especially for the Night They Raided Minsky's. I have found memories of that film. As a teenager it was the first film that I saw show a woman's boobs.

DR Elmore - Richard and I did not attend the Christine Andreas concert.  It was Saturday night and, considering the day we'd had, I didn't think either of us was in the mood.  He didn't even realize we'd missed it until last night when he turned his calendar over for the new week.

Good morning, all! I slept relatively well last night and I am off to Toyland to accomplish many things. Yesterday on Facebook I posted about the cheap shits at the Library of Congress and their lack of on-time payment that caused a panic among the copyists involved. I don't want to start a run on the bank, all I wanted to do was let the public know the Library has a crappy payment policy!

Well, I want a copy of the new soundtrack; I played myLP of "Minsky's" until it was transparent. I cannot do a thing about it before Wednesday or Thursday, if I get paid by PHI (who the hell knows at this point in my life?) or if the money from the Liz Callaway job shows up.

On my way back today from Toyland, I have to stop at Staples and buy a new drafting lamp; mine exploded yesterday and I have nuts, bolts, and springs all over my desk. Oy!

DR vixmom, the vixter's poem was wonderful! You did good raising her. It sounds like a great day for the birthday girl and the guests, and the food sounded great!

That's my news.

I was in a great deal of pain this morning, but I took my Vicodin at 6 and got ready for my day. My driver's license is expiring in a couple of weeks, and I was determined to renew it today.

I get in the car and drive to the bureau (we have to take an eye test and pass the roadsign test to renew). The driving position in the car is bad for my affliction, and my arm started killing me on the way there. It's a 15-20 minute drive to the bureau, and I almost turned around a couple of times, but at stop signs, I contort my arm around my back and ease the strain on the parts that were causing distress.

Anyway, I get to the bureau, but the parking lot is suspiciously empty. I walk up to the door, and there's a sign saying they were CLOSED today from 8-1!!! THE ONE DAY I PICK TO GO DO THIS, AND IT'S CLOSED!

I guess I have not been living right. I wanted to burst out crying right then and there.

I had a very tiring weekend. It was very hot and sunny. So my niece, parents, sister, aunt and uncle and I spent much of the weekend at an outdoor pool my parents are members of.

My niece (who will turn 4 in a month) has been taking swimming lessons all year. And they have really paid off. She was so good. She can swim the entire length of the pool by herself with her bubble. And she can swim about 10 feet without it. She jumps in with her bubble and it is so cute.

Since it was so hot we were afraid her scalp would burn so i found a bathing cap i had bought but never used. It's one of those material ones (i've never seen those before). She looked so cute in it!

I also ended up going to International Day, where many countries serve free food. Some of it is really good. And some would be good if it was hot. IT's hard but some of the people involved know exactly what to do. For instance Greece, for the past 3 years they always serve the same thing. But it is delicious (my fav of the day) and they put it out so people don't have to wait.

They serve souvlaki, a pita, sauce, spinach pie, and cheese pie. And they plate it right before people are allowed to eat.

My niece's lola was there at the philippines table, although she didn't make the food this year. The food was good, although the eggrolls were not as good as hers or her sisters.

The only problem was it was way too hot with no shade. The sun was ridiculous and they were behind (there was dancing too. So they wouldn't let people serve the food. And some people who had pre-plated, like china, ending up serving cold food that did not taste too good cold. :(

But it was a fun day. After that i was so hot and i went back to the pool and finally got to swim (well an hour after i'd digested all that food). I cannot swim when my niece is there because i have to watch her!

Had a wonderful time yesterday at India Festival 2009. Taylor, Benny, and I took the train into downtown Portland and it dropped us off right at Pioneer Square, where the festivities were already in motion.

We first sat and watched numerous absolutely wonderful authentic Indian dances, and some Bollywood style dancing, from kids from the Anjali School of Dance. Man alive these little ones were good, and the costumes were quiet elaborate and authentic.

After awhile we went to the food booths and had some lunch, then shopped a bit at some of the vendor booths. Taylor was quite enamored of the booths that sold Indian jewelry, and thanks to Uncle Mike, she got some pretty nice bling. Benny got a children's book on Krishna titled KRISHNA ROCKS. Uncle Mike bought two Indian style shirts while discussing he merits of John Abraham with the gal who was selling them.

I did not take very many pictures, but will late post those that I did take.

DR MattH that is terrible that your pain is back. But at least you will go to the doctor tomorrow. And hopefully they will find something that will make you feel better.

It's too bad that you had to drive all the way to find the place closed. But it's probably better not to have to take the test while you're in so much pain.

In the Phoenix schools, our grade schools went from grades 1 through 8  sometimes broken up into two schools 1-4 and 5-8), and the high schools went from grades 9 through 12. So I had no junior high.

I have class pictures from grade school and few things in a scrapbook that fell apart years ago.  From high school I have programs pf the plays I was in, my 3 yearbooks (since I graduated early-- thank goodness), and I hung on to a few poems and songs that peopel wrote to me/for me.  I used to look at this stuff periodically, but it has gotten buried deeper and deper beneath Playbills, menus from ships, etc.

I think I had weird dreams - not bad, just weird, but I can't quite remember what was going on in them.  Oh, yeah, one was about Kevin Spirtas doing an act with Reba McIntyre - and they'd brought me in to talk.  I think Kevin kept morphing into Brent Barrett, and Reba was having vocal problems and suggested doing a Disney medley, which I thought was a good idea - then she said she was joking.  I said I still thought it was a good idea.

I have a couple of boxes of old school stuff, mostly from high school and college, but some stuff going back to grade school days...old class photos, wallet-size snaps of friends when you traded school pictures, programs of school events, old school newspapers, high school yearbooks, the tassel off my graduate cap, etc.  I also have a great many of my papers, projects, and school notebooks, from both high school and college.  I have frequently referred back to my theatre and English notebooks.  I also a wooden car I made in Kindergarten and a pot holder in grade school.  I used to have the pump lamp I made in shop until it stopped working..

Either one of them with Reba works for me! I had some weird dream about a Shakespeare exam and paper on MERCHANT OF VENICE last night. And that reminds me that when I worked at Drama Book Shop, I had an order one day for 50 copies of THE MERCHANT OF VENUS!

I'm at Toyland so I have to do some work now. Ta!

DAW, mostly I did depositions in lawyers' offices. I did bankruptcy court a lot, too. The court would pay for my appearance fee, but the lawyers who ordered transcripts didn't always pay.

When I had jury duty last year, one of the questions the judge asked was about whether any of us had worked and not been paid. I raised my hand and explained. I could see the judge and lawyers looking at me and trying to determine if they recognized me and owed me money.

My mom has kept virtually all remembrances, ephemera, etc., from my school days.  All my report cards, of course, and photos I had gathered of classmates are included in a box full of other photos and remembrances/mementos, etc.

Among them are my first grade reading books....Alice and Jerry.  I know many had Dick and Jane, but some of us had the illustrated stories of Alice and Jerry and their dog Jip.

As for the Topic of the Day...

My mom saved all of my grade school (K-8) class pictures and report cards.  She assembled some wonderful photo albums for/of me and my brothers. I, in turn, saved almost all of the pictures and report cards from my high school years.  However, I never purchased my own copy of my Junior Year yearbook, and it's actually the one yearbook I wish I had since it was a good year for school activities for me. But at least I have my brothers' copies to reference.  There is also one box of high school Drama programs that I keep hoping will turn up some day.  Alas, I believe it may have gotten thrown out in one my moves.

I also have a binder filled with my judging sheets from the various piano festivals and competitions I participated in.

At my work, we have an employee bulletin that's sent out (and posted on our Intranet) every week.  Sometimes they need to fill space and this week, they had this joke:

Quote
Two American tourists are driving through Wales.  They decide to stop for a bite to eat in the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysili ogogogoch.

Baffled by the name, one of them turns to a local and asks, “Would you please say where we are—very slowly?”

The Welshman leans over and says, very slowly, “Burrr-gerrr Kinngg.”

And for S. Woody White, hope you have the day off for your birthday!!

Well, that was the plan. His schedule as first posted was for a five day 37 hour work week (he's part-time and is only supposed to get 35 hours maximum) with today off. Yesterday the boss added a 4hour (1-5) shift for today. Well, at least he was to get off by 5 (we need to be seated in the restaurant by 6 for the three-course specials). At 7:30 AM the store supervisior called and asked him if could please come in earlier - so it's now 9-4 - at least he's off an hour earlier. That puts his part-time work-week up to 44 hours.

The birthday dinner will be at LUPO DI MARE CUCINA ITALIANA (http://www.lupodimarerehoboth.com/earlybird.asp). The chef is big on maximizing local ingredients.

I still have my HS School Year Book and Class pin.

I also have my infamous 18 hour, 2000 word original research paper on the Monroe Doctrine.

The paper was a term  assignment in 10th Grade History. In my usual don't do today what you can do tommow mode, I waited until the very last day. I spent the afternoon at the Library checking out a raft of reference books. I then went home and earmarked with paper slips all the applicable references I could find. Based on the available data, I created an outline and annotated the paper slips with a Topic Code. I then sat down at my typewriter and read each topic's selections and paraphrased them for the report. This endeavor carried me until 10 AM the day the report was due. Mom agreed to take the bus to school and hand deliver the report so I could get some sleep. I hastily composed a one page introduction and sent Mom on her way.

A few days later the History Prof called me to his office with "questions about originality". Oh-Uh - here's trouble. He said he was certain some of the paper was plagiarized but he could find no proof. It seems he had no trouble with the body of the report, but said the introduction was too professional and had to have been copied from somewhere, but try as he could, he could not find out where. I had little difficulty swearing that the Introduction was, in fact, my own work - but I'm sure he disbelieved me.

He awarded the paper an A Minus.

I retyped the paper my senior year in college and submitted it for a solid A.
I guess writings improve with age.

Back from my first ever, and hopefully last, MRI.  They only needed to do my leg/knee, but I was still more or less inside the damned thing, which made an appallingly loud noise.  I had to giggle at the thought of BK ever having to go through one of these--a small, enclosed space surrounded by ear shattering low frequency rumbles that are exactly like loud construction noise.  ;)  They did give me headphones where I got to "listen" to "soft rock", all to the thrumming backbeat of supercollider magnets.

ATWT: more fallout from Holden's "death" and some scheming behind the scenes from Damien. Luke and Noah were very good together.

Good OLTL today as Kyle made another play for Fish who initially responded but then Kyle covered for him in front of Cristian and you could see the ice begin to melt. This should get very interesting in the weeks to come.

Hey everyone, sorry I haven't posted in a while, summer kinda grabbed me and shook me around in a crazy whirlwind of all my friends having thier own delemas that I am always dragged into. Such is teenage life. I hope that everything's going alright for everyone on here, and I just wanted to say hi, and that I miss you all. And I must also thank you guys for convincing my mom to take me to see avenue Q before it closes. I've decided it's not fair to judge a musical before you see it. Now I just have to deal with the moral delema of seeing it on a sunday...

I send you all good day vibes, and may you all find that last little bit of summer crazyness you want to get out of the way before the season ends to be satisfying. Love you all!!!

Have you checked out the posts by MMM at FSM in the thread "Present Film music vs. Past"?   He gives a response to someone and then becomes preachy with bitterness over folks who have wronged him in that forum questioning his authority  (i.e., he claims his "facts" are challenged).

He makes some assertions about some posters needing a shrink.

I cannot for life of me understand how he can delude himself so blindly as to his bringing much of his grief upon himself in that forum.

Does that mean they serve you salt water?

Bryan sent us 2 pounds of Thornton's toffee he purchased in Dublin.  In reality that is about 1 3/4th pound of toffee all for me.  I wish I had Keith's will power.

I kept telling Bryan I wanted to know if Thornton's was still there & if he found it, and that I didn't want him to buy any for me.  Obviously he didn't believe me.  He did take a photo of the store & send it to me  :), that was not fattening, nor will it keep me awake at night. ;D

DR Ginny, how are you doing?

DR Jane - we're doing pretty well, considering.  Richard and I have been in contact with John's wife and daughters via phone, Facebook, and text-messaging today, but have let them proceed with the arrangements.  Because he's been asked to assist as a clergyman at Thursday's service, Richard will attend the meeting at the church tomorrow afternoon.  I'll go along, but not in an official capacity.  My job is to hold hands and give hugs (and probably take brownies).

It was important to me to see our son Rob today, so I was glad that we had the furniture-moving excuse.  He followed us home to unload my car and his, have dinner with us, and just hang out a while.

I've also spent some time on the phone with my mother and my sister, whose birthday is tomorrow.  She's getting an extra-special flower delivery from me this year.

Dan-the-Man's package o' DVDs arrived this day - the entire 5th season of Lost.  Apparently not great quality, but it will do until the Blu-Ray in December.  Right now, I do believe I'm watching the stupidest movie ever - maybe not the worst - but certainly the stupidest.  The screenwriters and rewriters should be run out of tinseltown on a rail and the producers and studio should be on that rail for actually green-lighting and making the film.

Best call-back wishes, DR George!  I really want you to get a part, so Richard and I can plan a trip to the PNW around the Brain run next spring!

I don't want to put too much pressure on DR George, however.......;)  an HHW gathering to watch you in The Brain would be great fun.

No pressure, at all!  It's only call-backs.  And it would be nice for someone from HHW to see me in a show.  I've been to five, count 'em, FIVE different shows that TCB has been in.

Be back later...with a report...if not actual casting information.

We went to watch THE CLOSER last night & found a poker competition recorded instead.  I hope the show recorded as promised this evening.  I feel better knowing DR elmore watched the show.

Good OLTL today as Kyle made another play for Fish who initially responded but then Kyle covered for him in front of Cristian and you could see the ice begin to melt. This should get very interesting in the weeks to come.

DR MattH - Since I don't watch "OLTL" - Is the character's name really "Fish"?

A 10 year old girl & her father where busted for having a lemonade stand in Central Park.  This really is kind of funny as all ended well & the kid got on tv.

When I saw that story last night, I was wondering if it was the same girl/family I had seen Saturday afternoon selling Lemonade & Cookies:  http://twitpic.com/e7j8w

Thankfully, it wasn't. However, the "vendors" I came across, even gave me a coupon! http://twitpic.com/e12ba

Cute DR Jose.  It doesn't look to me like your lemonade sellers were inside the park.

Well, I was wondering if that was them post-Riverside Park, post-ticket - since the original story mentioned that they set-up shop in the lobby of their building after they left the park.  -They made $19!

*I just really wish I would have snapped a pic of the sandwich boards that that group of kids had made.  Now those were cute!

Not sure, DR Jane.  If the daughter who lives in NW Ohio is still in town, she's probably staying with her sister, who lives nearby.  She only stayed with us last week because her sister's household had bronchitis.

Speaking of high school, I am going to meet a girl from high school who contacted me via Facebook.  She was a very nice girl and was my girlfriend (kind of) when I was 14.  Haven't seen her in about 37 years or so.  We've probably changed a little since then.  Just a little bit.  ::)

Yes, nothing like the comfort of your family.  When my mother passed away we had just moved & Keith had a new job.  He stayed home while I took the boys to L.A.  They stayed with my in-laws & I stayed with my father.  It would have been much nicer if we all could have stayed together.

I finished the last of the Japanese noirs tonight - A COLT IS MY PASSPORT. A cat and mouse plot with a hitman and his best friend being persued by the gang whose boss he rubbed out. Not as good as the previous two or three films, but still very good.

I enjoyed that set, but I am SO glad to have that set behind me. When you're dealing with those Japanese names and actors you aren't the least bit familiar with, it's daunting reviewing so many films in the same package.

When I finished that, I wanted to veg out without needing to follow a plot or anything, so I watched STARDUST: THE BETTE DAVIS STORY. Just the right documentary to relax and watch.

Then I completed my evening viewing with tonight's THE CLOSER. I echo other reponses to its wonderful, tender, and touching story. I pretty much figured it out before we got the identity of the killer, but it was still very moving.

That's like saying, I have the urge to get some chocolate.  ;)  Too much good stuff to try to pick.  What are you in the mood for?  Vocals?  Instrumentals?  You can't go wrong with Antonio Carlos Jobim (Girl from Ipanema, Corcovado, etc.).  If you're new to bossa nova, start with him.

Well, we had call-backs tonight.  Everyone read a couple of scenes and then we had the dance section.  Some danced better than others, but I don't think anyone was horrible.  For the singing, we sang through the title song, both the narrator's intro part in unison and the first chorus.

But there was a problem with the music, BK!  Josh, the director/music director was running the audition, and was playing from the piano/vocal score.  We just had the vocal parts.  However, when he started teaching us the chorus parts at the "People of Earth beware this warning..." section, he was playing notes that were not in our music!  Our music only had two vocal lines...the men were starting on a D-flat above middle C and the women were supposed to sing a B-flat above that, in harmony with each other, but Josh played different notes.  When we realized that they're different, I looked at his score and he had four-note chords for that section.  Josh said that we'll learn what is in his vocal score, but if it's different than the music that the singers have, it'll be a hassle.

Hopefully, this will be all be fixed by the time rehearsals start. :-\

Talk to elmore - he supposedly proofed everything.  The Bb and Db are the correct notes, though.  I don't think we ever had four-note harmonies for that section - you can hear it on the CD - clearly two notes.
