Title: TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT
Post by: bk on August 18, 2009, 12:30:00 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were tempestuous and had a teapot vibe, and now it is time for you to post until the tempestuous cows come home.

George, be sure to see my last post in the closed thread - it answers your question about the harmony notes - and then mention this to elmore, because he prepared all the music, and I would imagine he proofed it.  If there's something wrong, hopefully he will let R&H know, so that it can be fixed.

When I looked at the vocal score music, I just glanced at it and didn't make out what the notes where.  I wonder if it just had the same two notes for both the men and women.

Thanks for the info, BK.  I'll ask Josh what the specific notes were.

Last night's rehearsal of Act One was okay.  I was off book - first time through was rough, second time through much better.  Just needed prompting on a couple of things.

Act Two tonight will be much rougher.

Molly leaves for home today.  It will not be a good day.

Good morning, all! Today is my first day back to the McGlinnventory since all hell broke loose last month. Cusrious as I am to discover all that's there, I must admit that it's a drudge job I wish did not consume so much of my time. I haven't missed it. I am also dropping off the final act of MOST HAPPY FELLA to MTI today when I leave the office on Park Avenue. I don't know if they will give me the revised Act One today or not. I can't do a thing with it, though, until I finish Brent's album.

DR George, I looked at my R&H vocal score for "The Brain From Planet X," and Josh does not have 4-note chords for that section in the chorus part. However, I must also add that I have not seen the final chorus books but the notes are indeed D-flat and B-flat and the section from m. 45-54 is indeed in 2-part harmony. I am assuming that the vocal books are in my hand as I turned them in to R&H, I did get a call about a list of vocal ranges when I was in Ohio and the person I spoke to told me he would takecare of that. And that's all I know.

Things to do, places to go, but first the TOD:

CD's
Offenbach Entre Nous
Liz Callaway On and Off Broadway
Guy Haines New Guy In Town
Tosca (with Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano conducted by de Sabata)
Carmen (Solti, Troyanos)
Marriage of Figaro (Schwarzkopf, Giulini)
Finian's Rainbow (City Center Revival)
Oklahoma! (1979 revival)
Sweeney Todd OBC
Brigadoon (Luker, Barrett, McGlinn)

DVD
Tom Jones (Finney, York)
Auntie Mame
Alice In Wonderland (DisneyThe Thief of Bagdad)
Time After Time
The Nutcracker (NY City Ballet)
Candide (Bernstein concert, London)
Pride and Prejudice (Ehle, Firth, AEI)
The Heiress
Henry V (Branagh or Olivier)
The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (Richard Lester set)

I have moved a second time to a different temporary location. I don't know how long I will be here. It's close to my old work station/cubicle but that space is still not ready. Perhaps by Friday or Monday I can be back where I belong. At least where I am now is not completely open. No one else is here and even though I'm in the open I'm not surrounded by people.

Back to Memphis, not the new musical headed for Broadway but the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis.

Thanks, all, for the positive thoughts about my MRI today. I had a rocky (not the movie) night and woke up very queasy this morning although some Coke to settle my stomach and some yougurt have made me feel much better.

I left the driver's license thing open to how I was feeling, but obviously, I didn't make it there this morning. I haven't even showered yet,

The next review item on my agenda is ADVENTURELAND on Blu-ray. I will watch the movie and whatever bonus features I can manage this afternoon. I'll finish it when I get in from the hospital tonight. Since I only have RESCUE ME on television tonight, I won't even need to turn on the cable box to watch regular TV this evening. I can finish the work disc and come upstairs and start on the review. That will certainly make for a different kind of Tuesday evening.

I watched the MAD MEN season opener on Demand last night.  Most intriguing and entertaining, although the takeover by the British firm seems to be a rather tired plot device that will lead to angst but not necessarily anything really interesting.  The writers had barely begun to explore the office politics of the people we already knew.

It's a lovely morning here.
When I got out of bed, I glanced out my window, there was a doe standing near my driveway.  She must've heard the sounds of me rising, for she looked up at my window for a few moments then went back to munching leaves.

So nice that Miss Dixie Bell and I have already had our cemetery run!  We stopped on the way at the Post Office where the postmistress was taking care of her flowers.  Dixie Bell loves meeting new people, and Rhonda even gave her a doggie treat.

I was looking at my new Maltin guide this morning and found that I must take it back to Borders:  the "L"s start with "Li" goes onto the "M"s, then repeats the "Li - lu" entries.  Quite strange.

That is funny. I posted after only reading to the end of page 1. And DR Elmore and i wrote the exact same thing about ear plugs.

See if the place has better ones. Not sure if they would give regular ones or a headset with music or something.

DR MattH, don't let it stress you out. As long as you're not claustrophobic it shouldn't be that bad. And maybe your place has the one that is open on the sides.

I'm also still working out my schedule for next week. Yes, my birthday is next week, but it turns out my cousin from Seattle will be back in town, and my brother, Jay, will be heading East next week too. So, it looks like I'll be down be back down in Virginia for a few days next week. I just don't which days those will be yet. -It will be the first time that all four Simbulan boys and all the grandchildren will be together since the Christmas of 2007.  Or as my mother would like to call it: Photo Op. ;)

No plans to see any shows? No other dinners planned with anyone? Is there one evening that would work better for you?  Any particular restaurant you want to dine at?

Just asking, not planning.

Today's laugh-o-rama department:  Just heard from the nurse.  I don't have a tear (thankfully), but do have some sort of "signficant trauma," which she described in terms I could not understand.  But then she said it was akin to "runner's knee" and said "this does happen quite a lot with athletes," implying I have athletic tendencies.  After I finished laughing, I thanked her.

OH! Sounds like your (foot) pedaling may be the culprit.  -I was dealing with some issues in my right leg a few years ago.  It turned out that my muscles were out of balance due to all the damper and patch-change pedaling I was doing.  Additionally, sitting on a bench with my knee at an "unnatural" angle for extended periods of time, also strained some things.  Stretch and bring your own chair to gigs (which I'm sure you already do).  In any case...

Did the nurse say you should come in for a follow-up visit?

It's a lovely morning here.
When I got out of bed, I glanced out my window, there was a doe standing near my driveway.  She must've heard the sounds of me rising, for she looked up at my window for a few moments then went back to munching leaves.
So nice that Miss Dixie Bell and I have already had our cemetery run!  We stopped on the way at the Post Office where the postmistress was taking care of her flowers.  Dixie Bell loves meeting new people, and Rhonda even gave her a doggie treat.

Sounds lovely where you live.

I am assuming that the vocal books are in my hand as I turned them in to R&H, I did get a call about a list of vocal ranges when I was in Ohio and the person I spoke to told me he would take care of that. And that's all I know.

I'll ask Josh if I can get copies of each to make sure that my memory is at least somewhat accurate. ;)

I loved the romantic banter between Mr. Grant and Ms. Kerr on the ship but agree about the editing.    I thought the first version of the movie was a little tighter, but I liked the chemistry better in the second.

My first day back on the McGlinnventory was fun, and everyone I usually see at the law firm seemed happy to see me back, which was nice. The only things of real interest were the original deshon Piano-conductor for the Albert Hague-Josh Logan MISS MOFFAT, which Bette Davis closed out of town in 1976 (how did McGlinn steal that from Chelsea Music?), a Vocal Score for SWEENEY TODD signed by Len Carious and Harold Prince, and John's Grammy for SHOW BOAT.

Then I had a lovely visit with Terry Lee at MTI. I gave him MOST HAPPY FELLA and we had an interesting discussion about the new orchestra parts for WEST SIDE STORY and the Bernstein office.

DR Jane - haven't heard from my sister yet.  She volunteers in the genealogy department at her local public library on Tuesday mornings, so I knew she'd be away then.  The family grapevine has informed me that while she was working at the library someone called her and invited her to play golf this afternoon, so she hasn't been home yet.  Good thing her husband is!

I talked to her last night and she told me about her birthday present from her husband.  They went to one of the car dealerships that's going out of business and bought file cabinets, which he painted fire-engine red.  He made a white countertop and that plus two 2-drawer file cabinets will comprise her new work station.  She also has a 3-drawer file cabinet.  This is all to accommodate her paper-dependent hobbies, genealogy and scrap-booking.

DR Ginny, such an interesting volunteer job.  Keith occasionally volunteers to do genealogy research for friends.  He is currently working on the new in-laws.  We were pleasantly surprised to find my cousins in Chicago have an interest in our family history.  Yesterday we mailed them a genealogy CD which included 108 images.

Nice birthday gift :)

Please send him some vibes for a speedy recovery so I can get him in here ASAP to hook these bookcases up to the wall. My apartment is in chaos until then and i will stop coping in about 3 days of this madness.

Currently, since i've taken all the books down that I can, I cannot find anything and the big job is tomorrow when the super's grandson helps me take all the bookdsdown and sort for keeping and shipping to Miami U. After tomorrow, until I can replace items on the bookcase, I can live only in a tiny amount of space in the apartment. Oy!

Do you all remember my handyman George? He came through his eye operation fine but he cannot do any work for another week. Please send him some vibes for a speedy recovery so I can get him in here ASAP to hook these bookcases up to the wall. My apartment is in chaos until then and i will stop coping in about 3 days of this madness.

Oh, good...I'm glad to see you've got only George's interests at heart.

However, if I hadn't been in pain, I likely wouldn't have needed an MRI.

Then I watched today's work project - ADVENTURELAND on Blu-ray. Made by the same director as SUPERBAD, another reminiscence of a turning point in one's life. Not all that funny and not all that dramatic. Very mediocre.

I did, but even the Vicodin has minimal effect on the pain when the arm is put in certain positions. Anyway, it's over now, and I'm grateful to have gotten through it.

Well, jury duty was ok.  I did make it to the panel after one person was excused.  They asked me quite a few questions and it was pretty clear to me that the defense lawyer (insurance co. for the school that was being sued for not protecting Native American siblings from being assaulted) did not want me on the jury. So I was struck in the final cut

It's ok, actually, because I'm really busy at the office.  It was only supposed to be a 2 day trial, but Edith is on vacation all next week, so we're trying to get a lot done before she goes.

If they do as they've been doing, they'll repeat this week's episode next Monday at 8 p.m. before the season finale episode. Don't know for sure that's going to happen, but it has been their policy up to now.

Odd, because I never had any trouble understanding/hearing him.  But...for what's worth, Bruce...the 5th Season is my favorite, thus far.  Many developments ahead....!!!!

I'M BEGINNING TO WONDER IF SOMEONE MAY NEED A HEARING AID?

::)

Seriously, some people whisper. Some people talk at a "normal" level.  And others are "loud-talkers".  Whispering is nothing new.

bk - Just keep watching and try not to let it bother you. There could be worse things to dampen your enjoyment of the series, any series.

the great soprano, Hildegard Behrens (http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/08/18/arts/AP-AS-Japan-Obit-Behrens.html?src=twt&twt=nytimesmusic), has died.

Have you seen the footage from the studio recording of Solti's Ring, when they played a prank on her and brought the live horse out on the studio room floor?       :D

Here's her [Liebestod (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyjXlBwpJuQ)...

First was awakened by the car alarm of the cretin who lives across the street.  We live right next to the train tracks, and every time a Metro North diesel train goes by [several times a day], this guy's SUV car alarm goes off.  You'd think he'd be considerate and - oh, I don't know - have the sensitivity level of his alarm system adjusted?  But no, it's easier to make everyone in a several block radius suffer daily.  Then Zach started barking due to the thunder and lighting.  So I guess I'm up for a while.    :)

bk - I say stick with Season Five, the payoffs are thrilling.
I'm sorry that you don't like Daniel Faraday, but he's been one of my favorite characters since his first appearance.  The Desmond/Daniel-centric episode, "The Constant" (in season four) is my all-time favorite episode of the series.
I don't think that the character of Faraday calls for "Sturm and Drang" acting, and his soft-spoken nature is such of a socially-challenged scientist, who has probably had more conversations with his lab animals than with humans; I think the acting choice is right for the character, though I never really thought of his performance as "whispering."

On a similar note, I have come across an actor whose speaking DID bother me:  on TRUE BLOOD, the ancient vampire Godfried's portray spoken most of his lines in a halting, nearly stuttering way that just made me want to throw my shoe at the teevee.

Not necessarily in need of a hearing aid.    All of us react differently to certain pitches...and some voices can really irritate us.  In this case, it could be the pitch of the actor's voice pushes a lot of buttons for BK.

Remember that report a couple of decades ago about some guy who had seizures every time a TV entertainment show aired and that the cause was the voice of that show's female co-star?  I think it was "Entertainment Tonight", but I don't recall the woman's name.

Yeah, he's the one. . .

My reaction to him was completely different.  He had a very soft speaking voice.  His syntax that was a bit different...an off beat here or there....but he always spoke his words distinctly.

POSSIBLE SPOILAGE

I have to say I was a bit disappointed in what they showed us.  SO MUCH was done before Allison called Chima into the diary room, including Natalie and Chima hiding the other housemate's clothes and doing other ugly things.   Chima was on my radar from the git-go as a wholly unsuitable misfit of a player.  Her brand of entitlement is nothing more than selfishness magnified to an unlimited degree.

Lydia is a major disappointment as a human being...especially one who was,  allegedly, a nanny for Paul McCartney's ex-wife.  She's been saved by Jeff several times in either his voting for someone else to leave or by his taking her off the block.  And now she is so viciously bitchy to him for, apparently, saving her and evicting Jessie.  Her calling Jordan a "ho" is indicative of what a skank she really is.  As one can read in Dingo's Hamsterwatch online, it was Lydia who gave Jessie various forms of "release" in the quiet and darkness of the HOH room.

Funny how Natalie said, in the diary room, that she had been running the house up until recently.  Yes, she's bitter, but she's a poor sport for a so-called "athlete."

I just don't get Kevin and why he is so invested in his coven of losers.  He seems pretty smart.  And to his credit, he has no enemies in the house.

End SPOILAGE

No, today's actors whisper and mumble - has nothing to do with a hearing aid - I hear everyone else just fine.  He's just not a good actor, and I hate this "style" of acting - I find it appalling. It doesn't ruin my enjoyment - it just annoys me when he's onscreen.

Yes, RLP, Lydia was orignally one of my favorites but now I do not care for her at all. When she watches this season for herself she will see that Jessie didn't give a darn about her. Natalie also appears to be one of those "mean drunks."

Natalie is very immature and Chima should never have been part of this contest to begin with. Don't these people realize this is a game they are playing?!

Natalie and Lydia were both immersed in the cult of Jessie.  I think they, and Chima, are lithium-deprived.  Rational thought doesn't apply to their behavior or actions.

The sad thing about Lydia leaving this week, if she does, is that she will expect to rush into the arms of Jessie in the jury house.   But....now that he's out of the game, I wonder how much time he'll actually have for her.  ;)

Yippie.

I'm sure it'll be very good.

Until later!

One cookie?  Hope it's a really good one

Actually, it was a very good one and three-quarters of another one!  It wasn't just a cookie...it was two six-inch chocolate chip cookies sandwiched with vanilla frosting!  I haven't tried it yet, but it looks YUMMY!  Also, my sister bought herself a frosting-filled snickerdoodle sandwich cookie of the same size.  She had had about a quarter of it and didn't want any more of it, so I took it.  I did try that one and it's very good.  :D
