Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fiendish, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they will be coming home - that's their plan - plan nine.

I'm awake. I cannot sleep. Just when I thought I was getting back to my old sleeping pattern. Damn!

Maybe it's all the tsuris and angst over the LoC, my current poverty, and this upcoming reading of Life Begins At 8:40, maybe it's too much cinnamon in my apple sauce, maybe it's the pain in my leg.

I, however, am up at my usual time.

I have no idea what we will be watching, if anything, this weekend. Until the weather breaks I won't sit in the living room to watch a DVD, it's too hot. The older I get, the less tolerance I have for the heat. It is supposed to get better tomorrow and Sunday and I can't wait.

Even with the heat I still have to do laundry so that will happen today.

Things are crazy at work. I won't go into detail. Some of you may hear details on Monday but I'm refraining from writing on a public space.

Oh, I forgot, I may see the revival/re-worked How Now, Dow Jones on Sunday afternoon. It's being done at the Minetta Lane as part of the Fringe Festival. It's always been a guilty pleasure. Very few people know the show. It starred Tony Roberts and Brenda Vaccaro (sp) was featured and had more than one song?!?!

Anyway, it's hot here in the living room (we only have AC in the bedroom) and I need to finish my breakfast and get to the office.

Bye.

Maybe all of the above.

I should be in bed sleeping.  I'm sure I ate too much sugar last night.  Oh, and then a dog sleeping half on top of me on a warm night doesn't help, on cold nights it is ok.

DR Matt H, I like Meg Ryan.  I somehow doubt the results of whatever she had done was exactly what she had intended.  I think it is relaxing a bit now & she looks better.

It is possible I misplaced a camera for a few days.  I did have a VERY long stretch between camera’s.

Also lovely photos from DR derBRUCER....food and otherwise.

Yes Mr Oosterhouse looks to me as if he's had some photoshopping done on his photo.

Nice email that MR BK received.  Hmmmmmmmmm......three hours to see 4 people, one of whom argued with the director.

We did Act Two yesterday.  It was my 4th rehearsal, and I had never done Act Two, so I had to use my book, but so did everyone else, except Teddy.  It's most distressing that people who have been in rehearsal SO long are still on book and wondering about their blocking.

It didn't help that our director decided to stay home last night.

Good morning, all!

As of today, no PHI payment, no word from the Library of Congress except that "friends" in the Music Dept have been letting other friends know that they're pissed I'm publicly yelling about the Library's accounting dept's refusal to honor the payment terms of its contract. I'm sure those "friends" are being paid regularly, and that's all I've asked for, and I've had to deal with certain friends whose attitude is "well, you will be paid at some point" want to know why I'm not borrowing money from others!

So, to all those folks above, I have some very choice, terse phrases I won't repeat here.

I have a few errands to run first thing this morning, and that's my day.

I don't really have anything new to watch this weekend, except the last to discs of NCIS, Season 4.

However, by the middle of next week, I should be getting a big box of DVDs forwarded to me from Los Angeles, which should contain some good stuff.

I got the results of the MRI. The good news was that it was not a herniated disc in my neck. The bad news is that I have a combination of the onset of arthritis and a deterioration of the spongy material between the discs in my spine. Now, I understand why the doctor has signed me up for rehab which begins on Monday morning.

And no new drugs for the present. He's convinced the pain will subside with time and exercise, so I have to use over-the-counter pain medication plus the rest of the Vicodin and Ibuprofin and muscle relaxers he prescribed during my previous two visits.

All very disappointing. On the other hand, it's not life threatening; it's just that my quality of life for the moment is not going to be very pleasant.

I was going to watch the All-Star PROJECT RUNWAY this morning since I was up very early, but the DVR did not record an audio track, so I just deleted both it and the first episode of the new season.

It's coming on again early this evening, so I'll re-record it then. I made sure the SAP channel was turned off which I think was the problem with the recording last night.

DR Matt H, the great news is that it's diagnosed and treatment can begin! I still feel for your pain and discomfort. I was going to sugggest the doctor give you Vicodin and muscle relaxant to help you sleep at night but I see he already has. It worked wonders for me, although I think it will take death to silence my bad attitude on existence.

My problem is that Vicodin and the muscle relaxer he gave me have had almost zero effect on things like cramping and their effects seem to wear off within a couple of hours which usually means by 4 a.m. at the latest, I'm wide awake and miserable.

I don't mean to sound like a whiner. But I haven't had a quality night's sleep in a month (come Saturday), and it's hard to stay positive without proper rest.

But I do appreciate the positive words.

My work project today and tomorrow will be THE UNTOUCHABLES from 1961-62. There are 16 episodes in this first half of the season. I haven't seen these programs in decades, so I'm looking forward to the Walter WInchell narration, the period look, and hopefully the crisp black and white production which I remember from watching it so many years ago.

Oh. My. GOD.

I never thought that this sort of thing could happen to me. My friends and I were coming back to y best friends house to hang out for a bit, since a couple of people were feeling sick from rides and whatnot. My best friends boyfriend, Matt had an I pod on him, so he put it on speaker or somthing so we could all rock out to the music together, and we got a call from a friend who was still in the fair, and all she did was yell into the phone for a couple of minutes about us leaving her behind, and then she hung up on me. (Incidentally, the reason we left was because she said her boyfriend and her would catch up, so we thought they where ditching us to go make out. AGAIN.)
So we were waiting on the corner for them to catch up (which they never did), when these two huge black guys come out of no-where and start asking Matt how much he wanted for his ipod. When he said it wasn't for sale, one of them took it and started walking away from us. Matt grabbed his shirt, and the guy punched him in the FACE, which made Matt stumble backwards and rip the guy's shirt. Then they walked away from us and when they got half-way down the block, they started running. After that, we went back to the house, and called the police after telling our friends mom. The police showed up, and dragged Matt away to identify a suspect, and less then half an hour later, I was being dragged away to do the same thing. The good News: They caught the guy who took his i-pod, and have him in custudy, I believe. The bad news: Even though Matt and I were able to identify the guy so they wouldn't need the rest of our friends to identify him as well, they made the two of us stay in a police department, in seperate rooms, and tell the whole story again to different detectives. I haven't seen him since around 11 ish last night, when my police car drove past his on the way to the station. I hope he's ok. Now some guy's gonna call me in a week or two, who'll want the story again, and tell me if I have to go to court as a witness, or if the kid is just going to jail now without me and Matt having to go to court. This place is turning into some new kind of Brooklyn at night. I thought people oved out here to get away from the cities. Guess I was wrong.

DR MattH - Even though it may not have been the diagnosis you were expecting - hoping for? - at least now you know how to proceed from here.  Did you doctor give you and advice, instruction for what to do between now and Monday? Stretching, etc.

*And as for your trip to the DMV yesterday - I guess it was a good thing that it took a while to get your renewal. It reminded me of a trip to the DMV I took a couple of years ago where the man at the next window did not have the strength(?) to sign the form.  All I could think of was, "And you expect him to drive too?" ;)

I have no work for the super's grandson until I hear from George about his schedule and I have no money to pay for any work.

DR the vixter, what a terrible situation!  I'm so happy they caught the creep and that your friend wasn't more seriously injured. Those crooks might have shot you all, and that wouldn't make me, the other DRs or anyone else very happy. It sounds to me, though, that you and your friends, as well as many folk I see in the City, need a course in street smarts. I had a roommate in 1984 who was mugged in the lobby of my building because she was too lax to make sure the building's front door was locked behind her when she came into the building after 11 pm. The creep followed her in and put a knife to her throat while she waited for the elevator. If the super at the time hadn't come out of his apartment to walk his dog, she might have been seriously injured instead of punched in the face when he ran off.

I kept hoping that, while she was looking at mug shots, she'd meet a nice cop.

No, the actor was great - it was the author who said the character shouldn't have the Irish lilt - he now realizes he was wrong and wouldn't hear it any other way.

I am very happy they caught those cretins, and if you have to go to court to make sure they're put in jail, then it's okay - because ASSES like that need to be put in jail.  I feel quite strongly that anyone, any turd who causes innocent people grief of that nature, needs to be put away because they are not fit to interact with other human beings, except for meeting their like in jail.

DR Matt H, your doctor seems to be working with you to make everything better.  I have one suggestion, use the over-the-counter pain meds before therapy, after the first visit.  They really need to know what level of pain you are in for the evaluation.

BK-

Like Your Well Written Mysteries Can you throw out some Clues(Hints) on The Broadway Show Recording and The New Movie Score?

I don't like to give too many clews, but I'll say that the B'way recording is on most people's want list, and the new movie score's composer has a B'way connection.

Whining is permitted, you are going through a lot right now.

Have you tried heat for the cramping?  That helps me, either soaking, a hot towel or heating pad.  A mild tranquilizer at night might work better than the pain meds or muscle relaxer, it does for me.

JMK, what's the name of your theater?

If you mean where The Producers is running, Lakewood Theater in Lake Oswego, Oregon.  Only three more performances to go (but who's counting), all sold out.  This is the most successful show they've done in 57 seasons!  In truly incredible news, this company has been in the black for going on 58 years, and anyone who's had any business experience with community theater knows how rare that is.

I would never have expected reading A YEAR IN PROVENCE would give me nightmares, yet it did.   It seems we have lived through renovations in too many homes for me to me reading stories about other people living in the same conditions.

This book is really for the likes of DRs Jose, SWW & DerBrucer, when the book is discussing home renovations it is discussing food, most of which I find rather disgusting ;)

This is probably a dumb question, but since I don't know the answer, maybe not.

Why would a road company, like WICKED, have both a standby and an understudy for the role of "Elphaba"?

An understudy is usually in the Ensemble, or playing a secondary role, but isn't the standby paid to basically show up and just sit around (doing crossword puzzles) unless the lead gets sick or something?

In New York, I assume, that they pay the standby a "retainer" to know/rehearse the show and be available, plus more $ if they actually perform.  But, on the road, we're talking about traveling expenses, etc., which makes having a standby much more expensive, particularly when you have an understudy for the part.

Somebody, please enlighten me.

BTW: I'm asking because we saw the standby (Carrie Manolakos) do the show the other night, and she was terrific.

It's not quite officially official yet, but I can now announce that I've been hired to review classical music/opera (both BD and audio BD) for Blu-ray.com.  I'm very excited by this opportunity, though truth be told, will miss the variety I experienced at both DVDTalk and Matt's home, Home Theater Forum.  I've already submitted my resignation to HTF, DVDTalk is wanting me to stay on in the background to handle classic film and some t.v. series, but I need to clear that with Blu-ray.  The best part in terms of new toys is, because I'm an independent subcontractor for Blu-ray, I can write off a brand spanking new home theater system, so I'm excited to be able to upgrade to some great new components for my review room.  Right now I think I will be getting a Samsung 42" LCD, an Onkyo 7.1 surround system and the new slimline PS3 for a player.

Back from the long jog.  Handy Man is assembling the metal shelves in the garage and this is the smartest decision I've made in ages!  We've got three going up now, then we'll do two smaller ones against the back wall, and then two more on the opposite side wall.  Not only will all the Kritzerland product and shipping supplies fit perfectly with room to spare, but also I'll finally be able to have a few shelves of CDs, books, and DVDs out there, instead of being so overcrowded in the house.  That will be so wonderful.

Oh. My.

We did have a 70% chance of rain, but there's nothing to suggest it's going to happen based on the way it looks outside today - hot, hot, hot but with blue skies smilin' at me (an Irving Berlin reference).

Then I started on my work project: THE UNTOUCHABLES, Season 3, Volume 1. This show is loaded with guest star character actors.

In the first episode, two crime bosses are played by VIncent Gardenia and Ned Glass and Peter Falk is moving in to take over their territories.

And in the third one, Frank Nitti makes his first appearance of the season (played by Bruce Gordon). Don Gordon was a guest star, but the big name in this episode is Martin Balsam as a former cop-gone-bad.

The shows are pretty formulaic - bad guys ove in with some racket and have early success thwarting the feds until Ness and his crew find a way to turn the tables. Still, good production values: love the score and Walter Winchell's terse commentary.

DR Matt H, re your nocturnal  Vicodin-relaxant  dosage, I took mine right before i went to bed and usually woke up for another dose around 4-4:30 am. Because I was so scared of addiction, I only took it at night, and around 9am or so when I got out of bed . I only took it during the day if it really really ached or I had some traveling to do. I do hope they get you out of your misery soon. I'm constantly in pain and constantly irritable, which is only aggravated by this payment misery, but i am off the drugs completely for the past week.

DR MattH - thanks for updating us on your diagnosis.  When do you start the PT?

Monday morning 8 a.m. I took the first available appointment. I am really serious about wanting to get better. This has been such a shock to me since I've never had any health issues apart from kidney stones quite a long time ago. The doctor seemed to think the spasms and pain would be cyclical for me. I guess time will tell.

Thanks for asking.

A brand new Trader Joe's just opened on the west side of Olympia today!  I went at my lunch time and just got back.  It was a mad house!  But I parked at a store kitty-corner to where Trader Joe's is (that parking lot was practically empty) and walked across the streets.  I just looked around a bit and only got some cookies and spaghetti sauce (not to be combined in any way, shape or form) and it took me 24, count 'em 24 minutes to get through the line...actually, that was not a surprise.  But I got a free reusable Trader Joe's bag! :D

Oh, right, we have a TOD:

DVD:
PUSHING DAISIES SEASON TWO - gosh, I'm really thrilled with this show and saddened by its cancellation.  Favorite episode of the 2nd season featured a female lighthouse keeper (the murder victim), a character named Eliot, an a capella rendition of "Candle on the Water" AND guest star Mary Kay Place!

PETE'S DRAGON - just had to go there.

ULYSSES - Kirk Douglas/Anthony Quinn peplum.

BLU-RAY:
CALIGULA - the new format doesn't make it a better movie, but, the commentaries by MacDowell and Mirren are quite fascinating.

CD:
Helen Reddy -The Woman I Am - The Definitive Collection

Oh, I forgot, I may see the revival/re-worked How Now, Dow Jones on Sunday afternoon. It's being done at the Minetta Lane as part of the Fringe Festival. It's always been a guilty pleasure. Very few people know the show. It starred Tony Roberts and Brenda Vaccaro (sp) was featured and had more than one song?!?!

Anyway, it's hot here in the living room (we only have AC in the bedroom) and I need to finish my breakfast and get to the office.

Bye.

In my (recent!) previous life, when once I was backstage tour guide host at Disney/MGM (then) Studios -- almost 20 years ago -- I got to host Miss Vaccaro; she's a funny lady who was so surprised I knew about How Now Dow Jones!

She also seemed to get a kick out of my telling her she has good taste in being married to a French fellow!

Ah, memories! .... Had to share!

At least, DR Matt, there is some light at the end of the tunnel.  Continued good vibes.

I learned today that the designer in the office next to me may be moving to another building in about a year (one that they own and are redoing).  This would be just about the time I am hoping to be able to expand and possibly add another paralegal or a lawyer.  Her space is totally cool. with the original high ceilings and a bathroom! (the building was built in the early 1900s)  Now we have to go upstairs to get to a bathroom - that alone would be worth it.   They would remodel to connect the offices.  We could still use my office now as two conference rooms and a waiting area and use the other space for our offices.

this is all just planning ahead, but I really think it's going to work out.

The best part about it is we would have 4 HUGE windows so lots of natural light

I'm watching Lost, Season Five episode 8 and this one is really pushing me, patience-wise.  It's like they run out of ideas and just create some new thing with new characters until they can figure out how to get back to, you know, the story we're INVESTED in.  For those who don't remember, SPOILER

This is where they are now stuck in whatever time they're stuck in and it keeps doing that three years later, three years earlier thing, and Sawyer is head of security and it's just giving me a headache, and now there's a new irritating girl have a baby in the way that only actresses have them, and I hope this is a one-off episode for her.

Okie doke, the new book will be up for preorder momentarily at www.kritzerland.com - I'll do a direct link later, but for now just go to the site and click on "Fun" on the menu bar.  From there you'll see the link to the book page.  There's only one thing we haven't dealt with and that's if someone orders multiple copies - although that has never been an issue, but if someone wants to just go ahead and do so and I'll figure out if there's extra shipping later and let you know.  Very exciting!

Well, I'm heading home.  I bought a PS2 serial port adaptor for my new computer to hook up both my computers to a PS2 switchbox so that I can use the same mouse, keyboard and monitor for both computers at the same time!  The PS2 adaptor arrived today and (hopefully) I can install it myself without (much) trouble.

Until later. :)

Herringbone was so good.   I had no idea what I was in for.  This is exactly the kind of bizarre writing I love.   Great evening, I was in heaven.

I don't think I even blinked, afraid to miss something on stage.  The acting, music and band, lighting and stage, etc, etc, were just wonderful.

Imagine being in a small theatre, in the middle of an eucalyptus grove filled with cool breezes and the scent of the ocean.   Wolfgang Puck's outdoor seating restaurant for the theatre was 20 feet away, and it seemed the place to be before the show.

I stayed at the Sheraton La Jolla across the street.  Next time I know to wear really comfortable shoes, walk the 4 blocks, and arrive early for dinner.

Everyone in LA complains about the traffic, I left at 5:30 in the morning, drove at 80MPH the whole way to La Jolla.  Was there before 7:30AM.   And at 80MPH I was being passed by more than 1/2 the cars on the road with me.   Faster than 80 is not safe in my little Echo.

I always thought firm beds were better for your back & preferred them.  Now I find I do better with a softer bed, not too soft that it caves in.  A hard bed makes my back hurt more.

Lots of review stuff arrived today. I got the next three Criterion items for September: THAT HAMILTON WOMAN, Mamet's HOMICIDE, and a three part THE HUMAN CONDITION movie set. I also got the next season of CRIMINAL MINDS.

All of these things come out on September 8. Oy! Next week is going to be BUSY!

So, DR Matt H, I think I've asked you this before but i am curious: are you obligated to review everything you are sent or can you pick and chose? I have an acquaintance who reviews AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE; he used to get 30-40 CDs a month and would maybe review 3 or 4 at the most.

LOL! I do remember your asking before, but I also remember answering before!

I am pretty much obligated to review what I'm sent OR make arrangements to have it covered by someone else on the staff. We send links of our reviews to the publicity departments of the studios we're assigned, and if they don't get them, they eventually cut off the review copies.

I got five more episodes of THE UNTOUCHABLES watched. I found myself nodding off during several of them. It's not that they're dull, but the formula is SO rigid for these shows that There isn't that much new to see show after show other than the great array of guest stars who continue to show up.

My friend John went to see ALTAR BOYZ tonight and dropped by after the show to tell me about it. I just ached too much to feel comfortable sitting in a seat watching a show. Lord Love a Duck is stuck at post office, I got there too late for them to want to fetch it for me from the back.  I'll have to pick it up in the morning.

Well, I didn't get mine at work today, so I won't be able to get it until Monday.  We don't get deliveries on Saturday...it's all in the timing.

DR elmore - Well... You know that poison thing in "The Name of the Rose"? Maybe you could rig the conductor's score the same way.

Here is a photo of the new shelves - it's a little out of focus, but the shelves themselves and their contents are in focus.

bk - I'm trying to remember - Did you finish clearing out your two storage units?

I made the tech director laugh last night.  He saw that I had a crossword puzzle book in the pit, and said it was obvious the band had "checked out."  I responded, "Kurt, Kurt, Kurt--we're professionals.  We had checked out by Act II on opening night."  :)

According to the Local 802 by-laws, I believe that's actually supposed to occur by the end of the opening number during the last tech.

That's not a dumb question at all, DR Druxy.

I believe our very own bk may have some inkling of the "structuring" of the roles and contracts in Wicked, but... As I was about to say...

It basically comes down to the color of the contract and the pay.

Yes, the understudy is usually part of the ensemble.  And, yes, the standby usually just does that: stand by.

For Wicked - even here in NYC on Broadway - the designation usually means that Mr. Schwartz and/or Mr. Mantello has "officially" approved - or not approved - the actresses playing G(a)linda and Elphaba.

For Elphaba, in particular, they want to have the "depth of coverage" since the role and the singing required tends to take its toll on actresses.  I believe the Broadway company actually has a stand-by, an understudy and one, if not two, additional "covers" for the role.

I also know that for the touring version, they've also been featuring different actresses for Elphaba and G(a)linda in certain cities if an actress happens to be a "hometown" girl.  I know that Chandra Lee Schwartz just took over as G(a)linda in San Diego - she's from San Marcos.

And as far as extra expenses are concerned, Wicked truly has money to burn, especially when you consider that they usually sell out in each city weeks and months before they roll into town.

I haven't cleaned out either storage facility.  At some point I'll have Mr. Handy Man accompany me to the main one, where all the stuff went when we had to move out of my former record label's offices.  I want to really pull everything out and reorganize how the boxes are - and there are boxes way in the back that I haven't been in for eight years, and I'm sure there are interesting things there.

So...

I found out this morning via Twitter that a friend of mine was in NYC today.  He has posted a pic of The Highline, and then I tweeted back asking him if he had actually taken the picture, and he said he did!  He decided on Wednesday to take a trip up to NYC for the weekend. -He's a teacher, and this is his last weekend of "freedom".  -He also managed to snag a decent orchestra seat for tonight's performance of Hair too!

So, since my cousin was running late this morning - surprise, surprise - I went ahead and headed down to Chelsea to meet him for lunch.  We were also joined by one of his former students. After lunch, we then made the rounds: Chelsea Market, Union Square, Madison Square Park, Shake Shack, etc., etc., etc.
