A entry for Barnum's LA Notebook:

LATIMES (http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-find26-2009aug26,0,7569929.story)
Tandoori chicken makes an enticing dish at Taurat, where Mohammed Hossain and wife Aliza, the owners, do all the cooking. The couple hail from Bangladesh. (Ann Johansson / For The Times)

Quote
Taurat Tandoori in Koreatown
...
The place is half halal meat market and half local hangout. Neighborhood kids wander in, turn on a Bollywood action movie, shoot some pool and argue about cars. Somebody you thought was a customer will get up from a meal and help bring out your food.

The walls are painted a bright, fresh orange and covered with enormous butterflies. Some of the tables are underneath faux gazebos, and an arrangement of cut tree branches hangs from the ceiling, which suggests that you are not, in fact, in a strip mall but instead outdoors, at a Bangladeshi family garden party.

There's only one copy of the menu, and it sometimes gets lost. You can order off it all day long; anything not already on the steam table gets made fresh.

If it's your first time, ordering is easy: Get the goat. Goat is the heart of the Taurat experience -- the restaurant has some of the sweetest, most tender goat in town.

Goat curry features big bone-in hunks of it, sitting in a bowl of glowing orange liquid. The liquid is the essence of goat, extracted into a buttery broth and mixed with a cardamom-intense spice paste. It's glorious; there are frequently cross-table fencing matches with hunks of fresh nan for the last savory driblet of goat sauce.

Taurat may be a casual place, but owner Mohammed Hossain is fastidious, ensuring the freshness and quality of his meat by personally buying and slaughtering all his own goat, lamb and beef, to strict halal standards, meaning he follows the dietary practices required by Islamic law. The meat must be fresh, so Hossain makes regular trips to Fresno's stockyards. And it must be butchered properly, which is why he does it himself.

Goat biryani is magical, a stripped-down dish of goat curry, rice and butter, melded into one. The taste of good butter permeates every bite. The addition of rice expands the goat flavor. Like a drop of water in a glass of bourbon, a little dilution opens up the intense, concentrated flavors and makes them bloom.

Goat korma is the loveliest and quietest of the gang -- a lush curry, full of the gentle sweetness of fresh cream soaking into the delicious goat hunks. Little hidden sprinkles of fried, caramelized onion add a surprising bit of extra-sweet crunch to the lushness.
...

The goat sounds so delicious why even Jane's mouth is watering :)

To make a "broken record" simile work we actually need a badly scratched record, not a completley boken one.

DR Michael S - As for the coverage of the death of Dominick Dunne... I'm guessing you haven't read the articles and blogs on the NYTimes' site, nor on Vanity Fair's site.  He's surely being given his due, and by the people who truly knew him and appreciated his work.  Ellie Greenwich will also be remembered "properly".  We can't all make the lead story of the 11:00 news.

The LA Brain was the best costume, but unfair to the actor to be completely covered.

Well, in some cases the audience is better served by a completley covered actor than a completley uncovered actor. Maybe they could do it like Oh, Calcutta! A completely covered Brain until the finale when the sheet somes off and we see him as his Mother bore him.

Good morning, all! I had to be up at 6 this morning to be at the McGlinnventory by 9; I have a long day, and it could be even longer if George shows up to do the work today. I've got to see my tax man about a curious document I received yesterday from the NY State Income Tax people, then a meeting with the conductor about the Life Begins at 8:40 scores, a lot of work on Brent's album - if I'm not tidying up the apartment from George's work, and I hope to get to see BK tonight. It all depends on the previous situations.

I did watch one CRIMINAL MINDS episode this morning, and it's one of the season's best: a beautiful (yep, surprising to say but true) story of a serial killer with OCD who forms an attachment to a blind child. The marvelous Alex O'Loughlin played the killer, and it's a grand performance.

Definitely one of my favroites of the season thus far.

It has finally cooled down in Manhattan. The high today is supposed to be 79 and the weekend will be cooler.

I'm a cranky old man when it comes to hot weather. I could never live in Arizona (sorry Laura) or Florida or other places where average summer temperatures are extremely high. Dry heat, schmy heat (or wet heat in the case of Florida). It gets hot in New York but at least I have Spring, Fall and Winter to look forward to.

However the cast did sing Happy Birthday to me during the intermission.

Our rehearsal was okay last night.  Things sort of fell apart toward the end, but I think it will be much better tonight.  I wore my costume and makeup and it all worked, so we shall see.

Hmmmmmmmmm....DR MATTH asked a tough question.

I like so many - but if I had to choose a favorite, if I HAD TO.....it would be:

Love Look Away - Rodgers & Hammerstein, Flower Drum Song.

Of course Mr Guy Haines sang a lovely version of it....here is another:

bk - I believe the "glow" they refer to is the endorphin rush you're supposed to get from a good workout. If you're not getting that "glow", maybe you need to start doing some resistance, weight-training. Or maybe you need to take a day off from the run - especially since you've been doing a little "extra" since you've been here in NYC. Or... ;)

-I'm sorry I won't be able to see you again before head back to LA tomorrow morning.  Have a great last day here in NYC.  -And it looks like you've got a great last day too weather-wise!  A good day for Central Park or Riverside Park or Hudson River Park or Bryant Park or The Highline or Top of the Rock or The Empire State Building or...

Actually, you're not staying too far from Bryant Park - Grab a seat out on the lawn for a few minutes and just take it all in. :)

It a government agency, no?  I know with the courts they are terrible about it. We can't submit claims until the case is over - sometimes over a year after you started working on it, and once submitted it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2-3 months to get the check.
If I have to go somewhere, they cover the airfare upfront, but I have to pay the hotel and expenses and get reimbursed.  I have absolutely no idea if the LOC is the same.  They should at least be telling you something.

But we can find the "person" distasteful and the "performer" brilliant (M. Jackson).

I think Jane Fonda is a brilliant actress but a thoroughly despicable human being.

Or using your absolutes:

Streisand singing - LOVE her; Streisand speaking off-script - HATE her.

As I entered my hiking trail today there was a sign warning of a bear sighting in the vicinity, and not to make eye contact or run if you see it.  What the sign didn't say was what to do if I spotted it.

From talking to other people it was likely spotted in the early morning or early evening & was down to enjoy the pear & fruit trees at the nearby houses & the water in the creek.  Odds are very good I would not see it.

Streisand - I love the pre-70s Streisand the most. From the succeeding decades, I have to pick and choose.

Betty Hutton - wears out her welcome fast, but in small doses, very entertaining, and sometimes in something like DREAM GIRL, I like her all the way through.

Michael Jackson - never appealed to me in anything that he did, but I recognize that he did have talent.

Josh Groban - no opinion pro or con.

Striesand -- Like DR Matt, I love her early work and bits and pieces of what she's done since the 70's.

Betty Hutton -- I've liked her in what I've seen of her movies, but then I haven't seen them all.

Michael Jackson -- Liked him and his work when he was younger, but nothing about the man or his music from the BAD album on.

Josh Groban -- not my cup of tea but I wont say that I hate his work.

And since we dragged Jane Fonda into this, I enjoy the lady and her work.

That's a pretty sedate stone for Betty!

I liked the story she always told - her mother had run a speakeasy in Battle Creek Michigan until they left town after dark.....when they came back for a big Betty Hutton movie premiere and there was a parade in Betty's honor - she and her mother were riding in a limousine in front of the mayor on her way to airport to go back to Hollywood.

Betty:  Wow, Mom, just like old times....

Betty's Mom:  Yes - only this time the police are in front of us.

The world is so lucky I believe in gun control because i want to walk into the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel and blow away the reservations dept. The Library of Congress spoke to a Kyle about my reservation and I need to talk to him. When I call the reservation number, I get whoever picks up and ask for Kyle, who;s always on another damned line. Then I tell the authoritative reservations clerk that I must speak to him since he and the LoC discussed my reservation and I need to deal with it. Aty this point I'm told once again that he's on ANOTHER CALL but they can help me. Is there a reservation under my name? No. Do you know the particulars I need to help with this matter? No. Can I speak to Kyle? He's on ANOTHER CALL! I want them all dead.

Don't you think that HHW should have a secret word of the day??

bk could select an odd word.  If anyone used it during the day in one of their posts, they could win a sparkly prize!  And it might inspire our DRs to use odd words here and there.

Well, more so than we already do.        :)

Here is some food for thought for BK:

Runner's High Can Lead to Addiction  (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32573781/ns/health-fitness/)

BK has indicated he's not sure what the "glow" is folks talk about....but I think maybe he is getting that glow whether he recognizes it or not...!

DR Jennifer traded her weather for ours.   And it hit F 89 degrees here today.  That's 20 degrees warmer than yesterday (and the warmest day in four or five weeks).

It was supposed to get up to 80 degrees today, because it is going to rain on Saturday.

There are a few performers who seem to divide people.....you either HATE or LOVE them.  How do you stand on these people:

Barbra Streisand

Betty Hutton

Michael Jackson

Josh Groban

I just fell in love with Streisand all over again by watching her on THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW, singing "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and "Down With Love" as well as THE medley with Judy, the other medley with Judy and the surprise appearance of Ethel Merman.
I have also been watching the video which was supposed to be released with the "....for the record" boxed set, and all I can say is "Wow!"  Yep, it's the early Streisand that I love - and loved when MY NAME IS BARBRA initially aired - after STONEY END, the albums became a mish-mash, mostly mash, which I found little listening value in.  I do have to say, however, that of those 70s and 80s albums, I'm still very fond of BUTTERFLY.
Even though it's not Friday, I will say that my media check for the week includes the musical numbers on the dvd of FUNNY GIRL, and gosh, that dvd looks fabulous!

I adore Betty Hutton!

Michael Jackson - well, I appreciate THRILLER, the album. . .and his performance in THE WIZ.

I haven't found a single thing about Josh Groban to NOT like, except maybe for the fact that most of his work is over-produced by David Foster. . .

I read it, DR TCB.

I thought it was lovely.  And it seems a lot closer to the Barbra that friends of mine who have met her describe her, rather than the Cruella usually featured in articles about her.

Well, we had some success today. Antonia wasn't thrilled, but she did much better.

Well, I don't care what they say, my Tortie, Sam, was warm' loving, and cuddly - with me - everybodyelse could go to hell. She did allow my other family members to share the house.

der Brucer

;D.

Craig's Tortie was unusually affectionate when I visited.  I think it had to do with the fact they had been gone for several days, that always makes her more affectionate.  My friend I stayed with has a Tortie that looks just like her previous, very un-affectionate one.  This Tortie is shy but sweet.

If there are, don't make eye contact or run.  I wonder if you can out bicycle a bear.  Honestly I was a bit nervous.  I know there is the possibility of bear & other wild life where ever I walk around here.

Back from, yes, another long and exhausting day.  I had a little drink with my pal Gene Castle, and we had a great time.  Gene's been in the business since he was a kid and was in the B'way cast of Flower Drum Song, the original cast of Gypsy, George M (where he had an incredible specialty number), and lots of other shows.

Then I met Adam Cates at the Brooklyn Diner - I had my beloved iceberg wedge, which was HUGE, with way too much Russian dressing, and then I had a club sandwich - I always forget how HUGE that is, and I was ready to burst.  Adam and I had a great chat, and then Miss Merrill Grant and our very own Rodzinski came by to join us for dessert.  We moved to a larger table and waited almost a half-hour before we ordered, so I wasn't quite so stuffed.  Merrill and Adam split the coconut cake and I changed it up and had what Rodzinski had - an incredibly yummilicious chocolate pudding pie - not HUGE and really great.  And then I came back to the hotel, finished packing, and now I shall write the notes and get them posted, then get to bed - I have a wake-up call set for 4:20 in the morning, and my transportation should arrive at 4:50.  I'm ready to come home, I must say.

When that finished, I happened to be on Showtime-HD which was showing BATTLE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICALS which was kind of interesting. I was in two plays in high school, but I never took drama (we only had six periods, and with my heavy course work, I only had time for band as an elective). These kids seem far more accomplished performing-wise than we were in high school. I was impressed with some of the talent on display.

And, of course, some of the human interest stories were touching.
