Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with September, and now it is time for you to post until the September cows come home.

TOD:

Favorite cafeteria lunch by far was spaghetti.  Since I had the job of staffing the "milk cart," and was always the last through the lunch line, the ladies serving the food took pity on me and often gave me an extra large helping.     :)

When I was younger, Mom would pack my lunch.  There was this little plastic tub with a screw-on lid that she would put in, with a rotating assortment of "extras."  The only one I remember was apple sauce, but I do remember looking forward to finding out what the surprise was in the "tub" each day.

Seems a bit strange that HHW's timestamp would be off by such an "odd" amount.

I did find out from Onkyo that my receiver was indeed defective--it was in something called "protect mode," which it obviously shouldn't have been.  So it's packaged up and ready for its return to Amazon.

In other incredibly exciting news from the JMK front, I queued my last review for DVD Talk earlier tonight (yesterday?).  There's an embargo on Acorn releases until right before street date, which isn't for two weeks, so it won't show up there for a few days, but for all intents and purposes, I have finished my tenure there, and it's kind of bittersweet for me.  Unlike a lot of sites, DVDTalk does not assign studios to reviewers, so there's more variety and more of a free for all in terms of available screeners, and I know I'm going to miss my daily visits to the screener pool to see what little gems were available.

The cool weather continues, and I am certainly loving it. What a pleasure to step outisde to get the newspaper or the mail, and to be hit with cool air. Most pleasant and wonderful. I wish fall were here for good, but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of hot weather.

I had some time this morning, so I watched another episode of LIE TO ME. This had one interesting story (about surrogate mothers) that was interesting and another (about embezzling CFOs) that wasn't. Since I have no shows recorded from TV on the DVR, I'll watchy aother episode today while I eat lunch.

Here's the link to the "I'm Still Queer" video on YouTube, just uploaded last evening.

Hope you like it, and if you do, please pass the link around.

It's to the tune of the Stephen Sondheim classic "I'm Still Here," with a very special thanks to the wonderful William Parry for doing the vocal, and it's on YouTube by arrangement and with permission of the real song's publisher. (And thanks to Jose as always, and to DR Julie for her help along the way.)

Thanks if you have time to watch - it's a little over four minutes long,

My mom didn't ever pack us lunches for the twelve years in public school. We ate in the school cafeteria if we ate at all.

Like some previous posters, spaghetti was always my favorite meal at school. School cafeterias always served the best yeast rolls in the business, too. Those are my two favorite memories of eating school lunches.

My senior year, I didn't have a lunch period because I was taking an extra class (journalism) since I was serving as feature editor of the school newspaper, and we used that period for preparation of each issue. So the only food I had during the day back then was eating a pack of potato chips and having a Sprite from the vending machine which I would eat walking from the main campus building down the hill, across the practice football/track field, and into the vocational school where band class (my last class of the day) was located. No wonder I weighed about 100 pounds during my senior year.

Topic of the day.   Grade school in Arizona,  Sloppy Joe's and potato chips.  The best ever.
Still love the combination and make them at home quite often.  (a healthier adult version)

Don't remember ever having anyone make lunch to take to school, I think in those days the cafeteria was really inexpensive.

DR ELMORE, you were asking about the Daytime Emmys.

I got to watch it last night. Ron Raines did not sing, but the whole cast of GUIDING LIGHT was there. There was a special tribute and they all went onstage.

Also, you asked if there was a lesbian storyline on the show. THere is between Olivia and Natalia. Although they have not really shown anything. They are more invested in the emotions, which is actually sort of an interesting storyline.

TOD:

From Kindergarden to sixth grade, my school lunch consisted of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich coupled with orange ade or chocolate milk received during the morning milk time.  The sandwich HAD to be made with JIF peanut butter, WELCH'S grape jelly AND WONDER bread.  Any deviation in the recipe was NOT accepted!

When we moved after I finished sixth grade, we were close enough to my new school so that I could come home for lunch during the next two years.  I generally ate ham or turkey breast sandwiches (which I made all by myself) and a can of Shasta Cherry Cola.

Once in high school I partook of the hot lunch bill of fare, which generally wasn't half bad.  The meatloaf was my favorite.

Pondering Life's Mysteries #7,523:

Why is it that on a crowded superhighway, at 70 mph, cars can drive in several lanes at once, or change lanes and cut people off without even signalling, whereas on a tiny back road, with no one for MILES around, they can't go a single foot over the center line to give a dog walker some courtesy "wiggle room"?

The cafeteria at Griffin Creek Elementary School had burned down the summer before my entrance into 1st grade, so taking our lunch was required. I don't recall what my home packed lunches consisted of, however, it was likely Peanut Butter and jam, Tuna Fish, or egg salad.

This was my lunch box:

When the cafeteria was rebuilt we quickly abandoned the packing of the lunch, although I don't know why. I was not a picky eater so I liked everything that was served...but as I recall, the Beanie Weenies were my favorite as was some vegetable thing which I cannot seem to recall now.

The intractable problem of dealing with folks who think it is acceptable to text while driving (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDlYSPVro0Q)...

There is a violent, graphic, scare-tactic ad going into British schools as a PSA.  I'm not posting the link here, as it is quite upsetting.  And studies show that it still won't make people [teens especially] change their behavior.

Bruce, you have them guessing over at Cast RecL. Someone asked what your next release will be (you've alluded to it here without naming it) and people are guessing everything but what you mentioned last Monday at Fred and Skip's. I actually know something they don't know. I feel elated.

Does Max Preeo know? He responded in a way that makes me think you told him or he somehow knows the title.

Guesses include:

the London PROMISES, PROMISES
DONNYBROOK
A TIME FOR SINGING
PARDON MY FRENCH, the Olsen and Johnson revue featuring Denise Darcel

Two others posted requests for future soundtrack releases. They are:

Lalo Schifrin's score for PUSSYCAT, PUSSYCAT, I LOVE YOU on CD paired with the original UA album for WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT?, also out-of-print.

A UA title soundtrack to PHAEDRA.

Who knows, maybe you can make some dreams come true

Mark of the Beast Department:  One of the cooler things about the Great Wolf lodge is they clip a little hospital-esque wristband on you that does everything--it gets you in the waterpark, but a little more amazingly, if you wave it in front of your door, it acts as your key, and any store on the premises can scan the wristband and charge your room automatically.  It makes everything very convenient, as no one wants to be carrying around their wallet/cash since the main attraction is the waterpark.

Sounds like a very fun vacation, JMK.

I guess we couldn't afford vacations much when I was a kid. We only traveled a couple times that I remember.

As an adult, we mostly go to visit my DH's family for vacations. We've only done one or two that didn't involve family.

Oooooh!  Lunch boxes!

My first lunch box (which was bought for kindergarden) was Alvin and the Chipmunks.  Dark green vinyl--very snazzy:

At some point during the first grade, I wanted something new and sturdier.  I let my dad talk me into getting a tin box featuring WAGON TRAIN (odd, because we never watched the show.)  I wasn't crazy about it at first, but it grew on me.  I liked the artwork a lot.

I think it was when I was about to start third grade that I wanted to get a new lunch box.  I remember standing in front of the display in Super X (a supermarket-sized drugstore) and being stupefied by the huge selection.  I couldn't decide between Lost In Space and The Green Hornet.  My mom helped me make my decision by deciding that I was taking too long and dragging me out of the store empty handed.

By fourth grade, I was paperbagging it.

Phaedra almost happened - paired with Topkapi, until I found all the extra music for Topkapi.  I don't think there are enough sales in Phaedra as a standalone.  I thought about the two pussycats, but I'm just not sure about it.  We do have one more put-together coming from that big MGM box set, and it's the two scores people most want from there, paired together.  And just to be clear, we have TWO cast album releases coming - the one I mentioned to those were at FJL's, and another one that I am awaiting contracts on.

Well, the Blu-ray of EARTH just arrived, so I know I will definitely have a work project for today. The movie is only 90 minutes, and there are only a couple of bonus items, so it seems I will have the evening free to watch something fun tonight.

MATT H

You realize that this is a condensation of The  BBC PLANET EARTH Series

Well, there is a lot of familiar footage in it from PLANET EARTH, but I guess they used some outtakes, too, since there is some footage I'd never seen before.

Instead of watching more LIE TO ME (which I'll probably do tonight after I watch a movie), I watched the last two episodes in the BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL series. I've always loved this documentary, and I enjoyed seeing those two sections again.

Then I spent the majority of the afternoon on EARTH. As DR Arnold alluded, it's PLANET EARTH-lite, a reshuffling and reorganization of amazing footage from PLANET EARTH with a new narrator (James Earl Jones) and a different theme: migration trying together the three main characters: polar bears, elephants, and humpback whales (though caribou and  cranes are also touched on). Adding in those other animals and different sections of the earth (desert, rain forest, both poles) also gives a spotty continuity to the whole thing.

So, the images are breathtaking (if mostly familiar) and the DTS-HD MA sound is imminently superior to the DD tracks on PLANET EARTH.

Then I watched the bonus features. There is PiP commentary and anecdotes along with pop-up facts which the user can turn on or off. There is a 42-minute documentary on the making of the film. And there is something called a "Living Menu" which will change periodically as 7 Earth hot spots change. The disc will then offer new video clips and pop-up facts for those 7 hot spots.

If the BD-player is connected to the internet, the disc also can GPS your location and give you the current time, weather, and temperature!

I'm beginning to think Uranus is in retrograde.  Amazon has completely (and I mean completely) screwed up this return/replacement of the defective Onkyo.  I will have to deal with it once we're back.  And then just a while ago, in the middle of my "relaxing" massage/refloxology session, the hotel's alarm went off and we had to evacuate.  It was evidently a drill.  They did give me 6 free cookies and some free Aveda product as a lovely parting apology gift.

When I was in grade school, every Thursday (or it seemed that way) we had chilli con carne and these giant cinnamon rolls.  I don't know who ever dreamed up that combination, but at the time, it was heaven.

Another school favorite was Browned Beef in gravy over whipped potatoes.

My favorite dessert was the little cups filled with raisins, minature marshmallows, and salted peanuts.  Yum!

Another school favorite was Browned Beef in gravy over whipped potatoes.

My sister always called that "Gravy Train."

And I always loved the turkey lunch that we were served the day before Thanksgiving.  When I was a child I thought that was strange because I figured that everybody would be having turkey dinner the next day.  Now, of course, I realize that the school lunch version was probably the only one that a lot of fellow students ever tasted.

I usually took a bagged lunch.  Eating in the cafeteria was a rare "treat", by choice.  I purchased milk at school.  In elementary school they sometimes had fudgsicle.  On those days I had ice cream instead of milk.

My favorite was a chopped olive sandwich on Challah.  I liked mine mixed with mayo & a friend of mine favored sliced olives with cream cheese.  Sometimes we would trade a half sandwich.

My sister always called that "Gravy Train."

In my school, the students took up a petition and demanded that Hamburger gravy over whipped potatoes could not be served more than once every 10 days or something like that.  I never minded the stuff, but by then I was going home for lunch anyway, so it didn't matter.

Dear Jane, jewelry not really.  It started as a way to make it less expensive, but it ended up costing more as the quality goes higher.  At the gem show a few months ago, the only piece I really liked was not marked (when asked = 2400.00)  It's really cheaper to buy it on sale at the department or jewelry store.

I had that lunchbox too!!  I always ate school lunch, but thought I needed a lunch box, not sure why

A couple of times my mom would me a lunch box with a thermos.  But, for some reason, thermoses and I did not get along.  Within 24 hours I would always drop it, or hit it against something and break the damn thermos.

Even to this day, I cannot be trusted with a thermos.  I take my coffee from home every morning.  If I buy a thermos to carry it, I can guarantee that it will be broken within a week.  When I buy a coffee carafe - it will last me for years.

Since I will be watching HIGH CRIMES on Blu-ray when Fox finally decides to get it to me, I thought I'd watch another Ashley Judd movie from around the same time: KISS THE GIRLS.

It has such a good cast, and quite a few hunky guys in the cast that are favorites: Cary Elwes, Jay Sanders, Tony Goldwyn, Jeremy Piven (well, he USED to be a favorite). Brian Cox is also in it with, of course, Morgan Freeman as the top-billed star of the show.

DR Jane - Is a "chopped olive sandwich" simply chopped olives between two slices of bread?  If so... I might have to try one sometime.  ;)  -Although, I will have to admit, that I'm not sure just how the olives would work with the sweetness of the challah bread.

Black olives? Green olives?

Do you like "Olive Loaf" too?

As for the Topic of the Day...

Sometimes my Mom packed a lunch for me and my brothers.  Other times, we would buy lunch at school.

In 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades, the school we went to had a cafeteria, and I seem to remember being given lunch money during those grades.

When we lived in Seattle, I remember getting little "chips" for lunch.  We would buy the chips in the morning before class, and then use them to buy lunch.  The school I went to had a "kitchen on wheels" that would go from classroom module to classroom module - each module was two classrooms.  They would set up in the shared coatroom.

For some reason, I'm thinking that the school I went to for Fourth Grade did not have a cafeteria.  We had to bring our lunch.  And the reason I remember that was because I had to get special permission to use the refrigerator in the teachers' lounge to store my lunch on certain days.  -I went through a "salad phase".  I even had the special Tupperware for it. I guess ice packs didn't really exist back then. ???

My train pulled into Penn Station at 9:50 and I was home by 10:15. I've been checking on emails and dealing with crises. George did not come in yesterday and do the bookcases, so I'm both pissed and worried about him, also sick of all thr damned clutter. Between the mess here and the rather poor performance of the conductor today I am in a very crabby mood.

Good night all!

We always had a cafeteria in school, but we didn't have choices, they put it on a plate and that's what you got.  I actually did liked the canned spinach, lol.  My favorites were the spaghetti, the pizza and the hamburger gravy on mashed potatoes.

But, I have to add, it was great to see DR Jose today and we had a fine group of players. Our trombonist was a dim bulb who showed up with all of his music except for the first three numbers. This was a big inconvenience because he didn't want to walk the 10 blocks to his car to see if the music was in the trunk. I wpould have paid fro his damned cab. I guess if he sat there and ignored the issue the music would materialiize onthe stand. Mark, our librarian today, spent the morning photovcopying the full score and cutting and pasting together parts for the three numbers because the dumbass couldn't check his part before he got there. I don't think they'll use him again.

As for the Topic of the Day (Part Two)...

I never had a "special" lunch box, but I seem to recall wanting one of those "construction worker" ones.  -Just the "plain" one with the thermos.  But I also seem to remember some sort of Disney-themed lunch box.

Like DR TCB, I tended to break thermoses. And if I didn't break them, I would lose them.

And I think I've told this story before, but...

My mom would usually pack some sort of dessert for me and my brothers.  Jell-O, fruit cocktail, canned peaches, canned figs(!), etc.  She had a veritable arsenal of individual Tupperware containers.  Well...

One day in Mr. Sharack's Fourth Grade classroom, we had a "Clean Out the Coat Room Day".  Once we had cleaned the floors and cubby holes, then Mr. Sharack - because he was the tallest one in the room - began to clean the upper shelves.  "Oh, look! Here's a bag that says "Jojo" on it."  -And inside it was a small Tupperware container.  And a spoon. "Oh, here's another one..."

And another one... And another one...

I think I must have taken about 15 containers and spoons home that day.  -Most of which were more like "science experiments" by that time.  ::)

As for the Topic of the Day (Part Tres)...

The rectangular pieces of cheese pizza at St. Thomas More Elementary always seemed to end up on my tray.  That cafeteria also had good french fries - which were baked, or at least finished in the oven. *I also seem to remember buying a hard-boiled egg regularly there.

My favorite Mom-made sandwich: Braunschweiger on Wonder Bread.

I, too, liked the canned - well, I guess it was canned - spinach. *However, we did have to wonder if it was just a coincidence that spinach was served the day after the lawn was mowed. ::)

Well, I did end up back at Good Stuff Eatery.  I ended up having a Spikes Sunny Side Burger (with an egg), Spike's Village Fries (with fresh thyme, rosemary and black pepper), and a Toasted Marshmallow Shake.  <burp>

Alas, Spike was not there tonight, so I wasn't able to pass on your "greetings". ;)

both... The landlord has stated he has talked to the renter and he behaves for a few daays and then starts up.

and yes also to the cops but they have to catch him red handed. And he usually leaves shortly after he has a joint and the cops arrive after the fact.

Just had a long talk with my friend's Sister.  Apparently Steve is doing a little better at the hospice.  He still sleeps a lot, isn't eating and is still on his way out, so to speak,  but they said his heart is strong and his lungs are still pretty good so he could stay like this for a couple weeks.   This is good and bad.  The hospice is wonderful and they are very happy there.  But if he stabilizes, they are going to have to move him to a nursing home (don't know if that's insurance or hospice policy or what).  That wouldn't be nearly as good of a situation. So it's a bit of a catch 22.

87 Scoops Later, a Sweet Meltdown (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/02/dining/reviews/02unde.html?ref=dining)

"With some eager friends, I tried 87 flavors at 17 spots in Manhattan and Brooklyn, trailing a wake of plastic spoons in the barbarous heat. We grew queasy and cranky. We wilted. Still, when we discovered a great ice cream, we couldn’t stop..."

*Of course, I probably could have written that article myself. ;)

Finished with my viewing, listening to the new Kritzerland master (this particular title came up unexpectedly, and I must say we've turned it around in record time - though it's already been on CD, that CD is OOP for quite a few years, and was made from album masters that sounded ugly, dry, and shrill and because the original LP issue was longer than usual for an LP the sound had been further squashed so as not to create inner groove distortion.  I found the original three-track album master and while the recording itself still sounded dry and shrill, it was not squashed and I was able for the first time to give it some nice, focused low end, airy high end and get rid of the shrill, and then put some nice subtle room ambience for the orchestra.  It sounds pretty great and certainly a lot better than the previous incarnations.  Considering how beloved the score is, I suspect we'll do well - in fact, my big online dealer has already committed to all but 20% of the run, so I'm thinking this will sell out in a day or two.

I'm actually thinking of doing the unthinkable (at least as of a year ago) - I may have to hire a Kritzerland helper full time for the next two months - wouldn't pay much and all under the table, but I can no longer do this by myself while trying to cast and direct a huge reading of a huge and long musical, plus work on three club acts and everything else that's going on.  I'll try to find some nice young person who needs some dough under the table, and they probably will do better doing this than working for eight or nine bucks an hour somewhere where they'd have taxes taken out.

Dear DakotaCelt:   Your neighbor upstairs, I had the same problem at my last building (even in Hollywood where everything is very relaxed) you can force the police to go to the apartment and talk to the tenant.  It is still a federal law, and the police have to investigate a complaint.   In the building I am in now, they just hired a young (20's manager) and everyone went wild, I put a stop to that and went straight to the head of the management company over everyone's head, believe me the tenants all behave now.

I'm from the 60's (and a former hippy, but we never intruded on someone else's air space).  The kids today can keep the smell from everyone else's nose if they want to, or are forced to.
