Title: THE FROLICSOME IMP
Post by: bk on March 31, 2004, 12:01:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've Marched for the last time this year to the notes, and now it is time to March right up and post your excellent interview questions (if you don't know whereof I speak, you haven't read the notes - do not pass go, do not collect More Hot Pies).

DR Jose: Just remember that the guy currently writing stage reviews for the Washington Post never knows what he's talking about.

Unless he actually likes your show.

And even then, the proverbial grain of salt is in order.

It's 2:40 AM in this neck (and elbow) of the woods. I went to sleep early-ish because I was totally TIRED. Okay. Except I woke up an hour ago, all refreshed and rarin' to go, thinking it was morning. It wasn't. So here I am.

Question for bk: If KRITZER TIME were made into a movie, and you could pick the perfect cast from every performer who ever existed, living or dead, what would be you ideal cast?

In addition to Panni's question, let's add this, BK:

If you could be cast in any role, or roles, in films of the Kritzer novels, which role (or roles) would you like to play?  (Other than Benjamin Kritzer himself, of course; miniaturizing you through CGI doesn't strike me as the right idea.  Having you play every lead actor in every film young Benjamin sees is something else again...   ;D  )

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......

questions for the interview:

Does Teller talk during production meetings?

In Kritzer Time, Benjamin Kritzer has many random celebrity encounters.  Are any of them based on actual Bruce Kimmel encounters?  Which ones?

I'm halfway through Kritzer Time, but here's my question for BK:

One of the wonderful things about the book is the way it combines precise details of time and place (theatres, prices, streetscapes, clothing) with Benjamin's reactions. Regarding the former - the specific details - how much was researched, and how much was based on memory? (I ask this because there's absolutely no feeling of "research.")

Dearest BK, I'm still in KRITZERLAND, so my question can't concern the third book, but my question is this:  what prompted you in the first place to begin a biographal novel and did you think it would become that dreadnought of Miss Prism, a three-volume novel suitable for replacing a baby in a handbag?

I would also be curious why you chose the novel form over a play or a screenplay.

Good morning all!

Re: last night's American Idol

I was really underwhelmed.  The only person I really loved was Fantasia.

I could not even hear John S.  And I felt bad watching him there.  Jon Peter (my other fav) was flailing back and forth (he seemed constipated :)).

Oy.

I don't even know who will be in the bottom three. Camille will be one.  Maybe jon or john.  I really hope America gives John S another chance.

1) Elaborating on a previous question, is the Judy Garland story in KRITZER TIME true?

2) Are you still a fan of wrestling and how do you compare wrestling today to wrestling of the late 50s/early 60s?

I think the bottom three tonight will be Camile, John Stevens, and Jennifer Hudson. I called all of their numbers last night, and they were never busy. Yes, I know that registered a vote for them, but I wanted to vote for Jennifer, and her line was never busy. Jon Peter's line was only momentarily busy, and not at all later in the evening. Diana's line was constantly busy and so was George's.

After the first five singers, though, I was convinced that Motown was a bad idea for these singers. They just didn't get it. I really thought John Stevens was worse than Camile last night, but would rather see her go and give John one more chance to impress.

For those who missed "American Idol," not to worry.  Tens of millions of folks tuned in, so no absences were noted unless they were somehow announced. And then, not even.   ;D

Last night -- John Stevens -- YEROUTAHERE! Reeked big time.  Camile -- NO EXCUSE -- I don't care what they said, she was horrible. Jennifer -- I think we've seen the best she can do...and it ain't good enough. Hey-yeah-ay!

Jon Peter -- last night's performance was, for me, like LaToya's first two performances -- well, okay..but where's the beef? LaToya -- FINALLY she does something I can relate to...figures Randy would find fault with the first REALLY good thing she's done since competition began.

Diana -- Dynamite! But, Simon's colors have flown and they're ugly. He simply does not like Diana...fails to acknowledge that she's unique and has a great voice (with a little too much Reba thrown in for my taste)...always picking at things that are totally insignificant (or irrlevant).

Amy -- another good week for Amy. She makes Motown sound soulful/countryish, but it's still Motown.  Fantasia -- Really good.  A bit over the top for me.  I don't like being growled at week after week.

George -- WOW! He was truly awesome last night.  Jasmine -- Wonderful, wonderful! She and George may well be the final two!

(It took me forever to get through on JPLs and Diana's lines!!!)

BK, dear, I just want you to know I've read the notes, but I can't think of a single question for today's topic.  But I didn't want you to think I was avoiding the subject because I hadn't read the notes.  Oh, no.  Because I have read the notes and I do always read the notes, and I think everybody should read the notes, as said notes are swell.

OK.  NETFLIX:  well, it's happening.  I thought it would happen and it is beginning to happen, damn them, damn them all to hell.  I had read that the more active your account is (and also the longer you are a member), the more "short wait" and "long wait"s you get for movies on your queue.  And here we are, not quite out of our Free Trial Period (which ends April 3) and already there is a Short Wait for "The Ladykillers" (Peter Sellers and Alec Guinness), but a Long Wait for "Back to the Future" (which has only been available on DVD for the past 15 months).

This phenomenon is, of course, attributable to the fact that the more rentals you receive in a month, the more money you cost them (postage both ways is included in the monthly subscription fee).  So it is of course to their advantage to slow down said rentals in any way possible.

That said, I still intend to stay with them because the fact remains that in the last 10 days we have seen 4 movies (and have 2 more on the way), all but one of which are completely unavailable at the local level (HK, foreign, and classic films).  Since our local Blockbuster costs $4.50 a pop, we've already received our money's worth.  Besides, as long as stuff on our list like "Once Upon a Time in China" and "A Man and a Woman" and "Nothing Sacred" is listed as being available "NOW" (not to mention the ouevre of one Miss Doris Wishman), "Back to the Future" can go to H-E-double hockeysticks.

Incidentally, for all the Lana Turner "Imitation of Life" fans, I highly recommend viewing the '30s version, which I saw yesterday for the first time.  Starring Claudette Colbert and Louise "Somebody bawl fo' Beulah?" Beavers, it's quite different and quite good.  Of course, the film provides a very anachronistic view of racial relations, but that's one of the things I like about it.  It's surprisingly complex, and whether the complexity is intentionally or incidentally there doesn't really matter to me.

And oh!  Has anybody seen Hitchcock's "Foreign Correspondent" with Joel McCrea?  I've been flogging myself since I missed taping it off TCM yesterday, and I was wondering if it's worth digging up a copy of the OOP tape.  I'm a McCrea fan, if that helps tip the scales at all.

Good morning all.
Thank you Dan!  I was beginning to think that HHW had forgotten my very own birthday.  I will be celebrating by driving up to Seattle and having dinner with my very own sister.  Then of course seeing Millie this weekend is my real birthday treat.
I apologize for being E&T yesterday...I was around reading posts, just didn't get the time to respond.
I must be off to a very intense choir rehearsal...

Excellent questions so far, but really, TEN posts?  Come on, if you don't have a question post about something else.  Seems pretty simple, eh?  But look at the questions of others and ask one - I know there are some of you who haven't read the books so ask something about Bullshit or something else.

And I KNEW I should have looked at our handy-dandy calendar!

So, let's put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let's break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let's dance the Hora and also the Mashed Potato because we have a birthday to celebrate and that birthday belongs to our dear, dear reader Ann!  So, let's all wish Ann a VERY happy birthday on the count of three: One, two, three - HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR, DEAR READER ANN ON THE COUNT OF THREE!  I hope Ann will tell us all about what she's doing on this very special day.

By the by, there was a VERY strange episode of My Little Margie on FamNet this morning.

Margie inadvertently bought a wrestler!  Yes, a wrestler.

I went into The Hubby's office, where he was fooling around on the computer, and said, "Margie Albright has accidentally bought a wrestler.  Why can't I lead such an interesting life?  Never in my life have I accidentally purchased a wrestler."  To which he - naturally enough, I suppose - said, "Thank goodness!"

HAPPY NATAL DAY TO DR ANN!

My question, since I have just returned from it, is:
How many DRs  (and BK) have done JURY DUTY?
Any interesting tales to tell?

I was actually deferred today since the dockets only held three to seven day civil trials.

Hmmm...I can't think of very many good questions, BK, but how about this...

"Kritzer Time" features a family that while obviously very loving, is also what might be termed today as slightly "dysfunctional."  Are the Kritzers and Gelfinbaums based very closely on fact, or did you decide to exaggerate for comic purposes?

I hope that's good enough.  Time to return chez moi, read a bit, and take a nice long nap.

By all means, try to hook yourself up to a copy of FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT. It's one of his least appreciated 40s efforts, and goodness knows why it hasn't shown up on DVD yet. It was Oscar nominated as Best Picture the same year Hitch's REBECCA won the award.

MBarnum, Panni & Abie thank you.  I took Echo for a nice long walk yesterday.  I hadn’t planned to go out but the rain stopped and so we took a drive into town where the ground was dry. It was a lovely long walk, but just that.  I had to keep her on a leash, something neither of us enjoys.

Lulu I seem to recall Foreign Correspondent as enjoyable, but not great.  I would gladly watch it again, so I say yes see it.  Periodically AMC & TMC show it.  If you had TIVO you could get put it in your wish list to record next time it is on.

Hey, BK - question for the interview: if you can't get La Streisand to play Mitzi, how would you feel about Delta Burke? Underrated actress, actually. And physically, could work beautifully.

Over the weekend I saw Charles Pogue's relentlessly fascinating DOA, with Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. If y'all haven't seen this film, I can't recommend it highly enough. Of course, you'd have to commit to seeing it twice, as I did - once is a real E-ticket ride, and then you'll need to see it again to see How He Done It. When I grow up, I wanna write something like that.

And a big happy Birthday to DR Ann.

My daffodils are about to sproing open, ditto the hyacinths and all my other beauties here in the forest. Oh, what a lovely day!

Ann, Jed & TCB when you see Juliana in Millie, please find out if the show will be coming my way.  I can’t find that it is which I find very surprising.  If the show is in Seattle now, and will in L.A, where will it be in-between?  I would expect it to be in Grants Pass, Medford or both.

Quote from Bruce yesterday:
“I'm thinking we should do a Los Angeles get-together when Miss Juliana A. Hansen is in town to do Millie at the Ahmanson. “

I have two questions.  When will this get-together be?
And what about the get-together when I’m there in May?

MBarnum, what is your favorite episode of MST3K?

DR Lulu,

I think my favorite MST3K episodes are, in no particular order:

Sky Divers
Space Children
Horror of Party Beach
Gammera
Manos, Hands of Fate
Night of the Blood Beast
Werewolf

There are just soooo many good ones, but those are ones that I recall off hand laughing continuously through...with Sky Divers and Horror of Party Beach probably being to two funniest of those that I have seen. Of course I have missed many, many episodes. I sure wish someone would start showing the ones that played on Comedy Channel because I know there are many of those that I have not seen.

I do remember that Ring of Terror was the first one that I  ever saw. I miss that show!

Do you prefer Mike or Joel. I like both.

Happy Birthday DR Ann!

Since 1986 I have been called for Jury Duty 6 times and served 6 times. I don't know what it is about me but every time my name comes up to be questioned, I end up on the jury. I have done civil jury duty twice (malpractice and labor-related issues), criminal jury duty (an assault late at night in the subway), two rounds of Grand Jury (at least you get to pick your shift, so I would always choose to go to the office early in the morning and go to Grand Jury in the afternoon) and my last was a Federal case involving discrimination against police officers involved in the Abner Louima assault trial from many years ago. I am sure, like clockwork, sometime this year I will be called. It has been 4 years since the Federal jury trial and since you are free from Jury Duty for 4 years after you serve (at least here in NY), my time will soon run out and I'm sure I'll be sitting in a jury box again. If only it were like it was on Law and Order (on which I did background work oh so many years ago).

MBarnum:  Joel all the way for me, baby!  All but one of the episodes on my "faves" list are Joel eps.

I discovered MST in 1989, and for four glorious years, Joel captained the Satellite of Love.  I watched off and on after the switch, but it just wasn't the same.  "Quality" isn't even the issue, it's a matter of someone you've grown to love being replaced.  The show was, for me,  just missing something after Joel's departure.

Unfortunately, I doubt the Comedy Channel episodes will ever be shown again, because the rights to the films are all snarled up.  Also, the idea of syndicating a two-hour-long show is unattractive to station managers.  However, there are lots of tape traders out there who may be able to give you a fix!  Try looking around www.mst3kinfo.com , for a start.

You want a Bullshit question...  I don't know if this works - toss it if it doesn't:
Do you find it more difficult to write material for performers with such a distinctive existing style and voice than for actors whose characters are basically your creations?
Or another way of asking the question might be... Is there a difference for you in writing comedy for performers with such a distinctive existing style and voice, rather than for actors whose characters are basically your creation?

My dear fellow readers, or is it my fellow Dear Readers (neither one of which is anything in internet lingo);

In my nearly one year of visiting with all of you here at HHW, I have often watched in amazement at the power of positive energy that we have been able to put forth as a group.  A sure sign of the love that exists in this place.  Although we are unfortunately not capable of relieving the pain and grief of a family who has lost their young son or daughter to some tragic circumstance, we do seem to have had a positive impact in other areas of each other’s lives.

Therefore, I am turning to all of you today for some Good Vibes.  Unlike some of our more selfless members (such as Laura II and Swishy Sarah) who are usually asking for vibes on behalf of their friends or family, this request is purely for me.

Today, I find myself in a position of complete financial meltdown.  Obviously, it isn’t something that has happened overnight, but has been developing over the past two years.  It started when I had to take four months off work, without pay, for my back surgeries, but it has certainly been compounded by some poor choices on my own part.  Over the next few weeks I am going to be making some very difficult decisions about my life and my future.  The first, and unfortunately the easiest to make, is that I will be giving up my internet service at home.

I would appreciate any and all of the good vibes you can possibly spare while I wrestle with these choices.  My biggest concern is that my two babies are safe and that they have a comfortable home.  After that, I will worry about me.

Thank you, one and all.

Lulu our Netflix experience has been very good. Netflix receives the DVD and sends same day notification that a new one has been sent out.  If the next DVD in your queue is delayed due to unavailability, which is rare, the next one in the queue is sent.  Netflix opened a new shipping location (in Seattle?) and we now receive them faster.

BTW, I don't have any questions for the interview yet, but I will try to come up with something later today.

I saw Sixteen Wounded last night. It's a new play about a Jewish baker in Amsterdam in 1992 around the time of the peace talks between Arafat and Peres (was it Shimon Peres, I forget). He takes on a Palestinian man (early 20s I think) who has left Gaza, as an apprentice and follows their lives for the next two years. Some of the script is based on terrorist incidents that happened at the time. The story is nothing new, older, lonely (insert ethnic/religious/whatever here) man w/a quiet life meets younger (insert rebel/outcast/whatever here) person. They clash initially but bond and become friends. Romance ensues between the younger man and a woman who works at the bakery. Life happens over the two years and the play ends with a difficult, perhaps tragic inevitability. That being said (my description tends to make it sound rather tired), it is a very well done production IMHO (in my humble opinion). Judd Hirsch is excellent as the baker and Martha Plimpton as the bakery worker is very good trying to balance her love for the Palestinian against her intellectual revulsion at his actions while living in Gaza. Omar Metwally (making his Broadway debut) as Mahmoud, the radical medical student gives a dynamic performance as a man torn by culture, family (remaining in the West Bank) and love. The play is very even handed and presents no resolutions or new ideas. In fact, Kraiem, who is Jewish, writes very well for both sides of the argument. There is a sincerity and commitment to the play that make the story work for me. The audience last night was very moved and at the end moment people gasped and were crying at the resolution. The show is in previews right now and opens April 20. Ticket sales are not strong at the moment but if it opens to good reviews that may change. I recommend the show (this is not a happy show, remember that) on the strength of the performances and the good work of Eliam Kraiem, the playwright. It isn't as stunning a theatrical experience as I Am My Own Wife (which I loved and saw twice at Playwright's Horizon's before it moved to Broadway) but it's an important piece, very well done and I think it deserves to be seen.

I'm seeing Twentieth Century tonight w/Heche and Baldwin (Alec). It's been a theatrical whirlwind this week w/Pardon My English on Friday (great fun) Barbara Cook on Saturday, a focus group on the future of the Drama Department (a small off-Broadway company here in New York) on Monday and Sixteen Wounded yesterday.

I think I use too many parenthetical phrases.

Good afternoon!

I would attempt to say Good Morning but since I didn't get up until an hour ago, 12:30EST... Ah, sleep!!!  It was nice.  -And, thankfully, no residual effects from the two Gin & Tonics I had last night at the reception/party.

Needless to say I'm not heading up to NYC today... Although if I catch the 3:00 train this afternoon...  Hmm...

Nah.  Instead I'm going to see William Finn's ELEGIES over at Signature Theatre.  The MD - who DR elmoore knows - was able to set aside a ticket for me.  It got a great review in the Washington Post today, and since I know almost the whole cast...  And I guess some non-EDEN music will be nice for an hour and forty minutes.

DR SWW - As for the reviewer for the Washington Post... The Post has always had issues with it's reviewers - but what paper hasn't.  The current main theatre critic, Peter Marks, may sometimes miss the mark - of course, that's totally subjective, but so is criticism - but I like his writing style, and the "extras" in his reviews provide some great background information.  At least The Post has been trying hard lately to only send the theatre critic to theatrical productions.  I've been a part of shows where they've sent the second of third string critic to the show - at the Kennedy Center!; and I've even been reviewed by the dance critic!

-Oh, and I think it was The Washington Post that fired one of their music reviewers a few years ago due to a major snafu.  The reviewer commented on the second half of the program, however, what he had failed to "realize" was that the recitalist had changed the program on the spot, so...  -The reviewer had left at intermission, so...  In the words of The Donald, "You're Fired!"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR ANN!

As for Questions...  Hmm... I'll have to think for a bit.. Still clearing the proverbial cobwebs here.

Well, I'm off to run some errands... and maybe even do some shopping! :-)

[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~$~~~~$~~~~$~~~~[/move]

BK - I don't think I get the Penn & Teller show on my TV, but assuming it's (therefore) on a premium channel, my question is this:

On network television, commercial success is judged by the Neilsen Ratings.  Unless I'm mistaken, there's no such thing for Showtime and HBO, so, how does everybody - executives and producers alike - know how the show is doing with the public?  You've also worked on shows that do get ratings; is there a difference in attitude?

Finally, is that Al Franken liberal radio show on the air in New York?  What's the frequency, Dan?

PeenyO, thanks for the kind words re: DOA.  But honestly, I have so many problems with this film.  The script was much more relentlessly fascinating and all the red herrings carefully laid and foreshadowing properly shadowed.  At the time, Michael Eisner called it the best script he had read in over a year.  But my directors (technicians masquerading as directors) did everything with a camera except tell a coherent story with it.  The well-made play I feel suffered at the hands of whiz-bang, busy visuals.

But people seem to like it, in spite of my problems, the lovely wife tells me to just shut up and say thank you.  So once again,"Thanks."  Maybe I'm just to close to the whole thing.

DR Lulu,

I didn't start watching MST3K until around 1990 or so and even afterwards I missed a lot of episodes. I guess I just thought it would never end so I didn't worry about missing an episode here or there.

I have noticed a lot of episodes available on Ebay too. Don't know what the picture quality is so haven't purchased any yet (many have been transferred onto DVDr), but one day I might get me some that I would like to see again (or for the first time).

I really grew to like Mike. Joel is great too, and of course he is who I started with as well, but the change over didn't bother me.

Have you seen the Horror of Party Beach episode...such a classic! LOL!

Oh, Lulu....let me add my two cents:

"Foreign Correspondent" is VERY MUCH WORTH your time and any efforts you take to get a copy.

Has some quintessential Hitchcock set pieces (umbrellas, windmills) and a rather fun plot about international intrigue/assassination/impersonation, etc.

First off, Happy Natal ANNiversary to DR Ann.

Second off, Good Financial Vibes to DR TCB.  I've been there, too. But like a bad haircut, eventually money grows back.

Third off, I've done Jury Duty exactly once, and it was damned close to traumatic for the entire jury.  It was a case involving spousal and child abuse, and listening to the testimony for three days was horrifying and heartbreaking.  The defendant was extremely guilty, showed utterly no remorse, and claimed Biblical sanction for all his horrific behavior.  He got locked up, and for a long time, too.  But, as far as I'm concerned, a life sentance without hope of parole wouldn't be long enough.

Fourth off, a Bullshit! question.  Penn Gillette uses some, shall we say, extremely coarse language in the show.  Is this something he interjects into the scripts, or is this language provided for him by the writers?

Fifth off, another Bullshit! question.  Penn and Teller are very skeptical; is this attitude shared by the writing staff?  (I'm a dyed-in-the-wool skeptic myself, by the way, and I'm pretty much sympatico with P&T's attitudes, if not their coarseness.  Though, in all honesty, I think bogus "psychics" like John Edwards and James van Pragh are just about the lowest form of life on the planet.)

Sixth off, a Penn and Teller story.  P&T used to play the Renaissance Fair circuit with an comic duo called Puke and Snot.  (Yes, that's right, Puke and Snot.  They've been doing essentially the exact same act for over twenty-five years.)  I remember seeing them frequently during their early years, and was quite taken with them.  These days, if you go to the Midwest Renaissance Fairs, Puke and Snot will often close their shows with a little good-natured dig at their former compadres:  "If you liked our show, we're Puke and Snot...if you hated our show, we're Penn and Teller!".

Seventh off, I think this is just about the longest post I've ever posted on HHW.  It's positively epic in scope.

Title: Re:THE FROLICSOME IMP

Another Kritzer question:

How did you come up with the name "Kritzer"?
Title: Re:THE FROLICSOME IMP
Post by: Robin on March 31, 2004, 02:24:59 PM
Robin - do you have a Kritzer question?

Eighth off, I'm going to pretend this is a sequel to the epic post I posted above.

Ninth off, a Kritzer question: are there any incidents or scenes you wanted in the novels, but left out?  What would these scenes have entailed, and why did you feel they needed to be left out?

Tenth off...you've mentioned that Kritzer Time is the last installment of the series.  What ultmately made that decision for you, and is there even a slight chance of seeing a fourth volume?

Eleventh off...if the Kritzer books were ever filmed, who would you like to direct and/or score the films.  And yes, you are allowed to answer, "Well, duh!  Myself, of course!".

Twelveth off..how do you like them apples?
Title: Re:THE FROLICSOME IMP

I've only gone in for jury duty once. (The other time my name was up for duty, I called the night before and my juror number along with about 50 others was excused.) At the time I did go in, I was not picked to even be considered for the jury. I was told that lawyers usually don't like teachers on juries because of their vast experience with the gamut of humankind and are usually not sympathetic to their clients. Don't know if that's true, but that is what someone whispered to me.

Now that I'm retired, I think serving on a jury would be a fascinating experience. Then, I was nervous because getting up substitute plans when one isn't sure how long he's going to be gone was a royal pain.

Oh, I did play Juror #4 in TWELVE ANGRY MEN three years ago. Does that count?  :)

Yes, it's the ultimate sacrilege.  I can hear BK screaming NO! now.  But I was asked to edit The Country's in the Very Best of Hands and to add a contemporary verse.   (The performers complained the song is way too long.)  So, brace yourself.

The Country's in the Very Best of Hands
Lyric: Johnny Mercer
Music: Gene DePaul

The country's in the very best of hands
The best of hands, the best of hands

The Treas'ry says the National Debt is climbing to the sky
And Government expenditures have never been so high
It makes a fella get a gleam of pride within his eye
To see how economy expands
The country's in the very best of hands

The country's in the very best of hands
The best of hands, the best of hands
You ought to hear the Senate when they're drawing up a bill
Whereas's and to wit's are crowded in each codicil
Such legal terminology would give your heart a thrill
There's phrases there that no one understands
The country's in the very best of hands

"I cannot tell a lie" is what George Washington once preached
It's like a sacred covenant that never can be breached
So presidents caught lying should be instantly impeached
It's honesty the populace demands
The country's in the very best of hands

Us voters is connected to the nominee
The nominee's connected to the treasury
When he ain't connected to the treasury
He sits around on his thighbones.
They sits around till they starts to snore
Jumps up and hollers "I has the floor!"
Then sits right down where they sat before
Up there they calls 'em their thigh bones
Dem bones, dem bones gonna rise again
Gonna tax us up to our eyes again
While the Budget doubles in size again
While they sets around on their thighbones

The country's in the very best of hands
The best of hands, the best of hands

The money that they taxes us is known as Revenues
They compounds the collaterals, subtracts the residues
Don't worry 'bout the principal and int'rest that accrues
They're shipping all that stuff to foreign lands
The country's in the very best of hands

And Bonne ANNiversaire, Ann!

I've been called for Jury Duty a number of times - and I just check where it says "not a citizen" (well - I Am a citizen - just not of the US) - and  I am no longer in the running. That's about the only positive aspect of not having citizenship.

Happy, Happy Birthday, Dear Reader Ann!! Much cake to you today!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ to TCB. We will miss you, and we know you'll be able to log in at the library and will look forward to your posts.
Jury Duty:
1. Undocumented worker possessed a rock of cocaine. His defense attorney presented ZERO evidence. Kind of a no-brainer. Biggest waste of an entire day.
2. Called for jury duty on THE September 11. Watched in horror as events unfolded with a few hundred other folks in the jury room. Excused without serving.
3. Was the court reporter on a jury trial in a small town once. Dentist shoplifted a glue pen worth about $4. His sentence was to put $100 into his church offering plate.
Coffee ice cream, with chocolate syrup on top, yummers!
I've been on jury duty three times.  Well, actually twice, but the first time I was placed on two panels, the first as an alternate and the second as a regular juror.
The first was a shoplifting case, where the defendant claimed the items taken had accidentally fallen into his wheelchair (!!!) and that he had never known about them because he couldn't feel them behind his behind.  There were too many inconsistancies with his story, however.
The second case was a civil case, a woman accidentally getting in the middle of a barroom brawl, and then suing the barroom owners because they had let the brawlers go and she had no one else to sue for her injuries.
Both of these cases took place in Cerritos, CA.  The establishments where the incidents occurred are both gone now.  Karma, I guess.
The third case wasn't so interesting, a guy claiming he hadn't been driving when he was pulled over for drunk driving.  (Yeah, sure, fella, switch seats and blame it on the wife.)  What was "fun" was that I started in the LA County Criminal Courts, then got transferred to the Civil Courts, and finally to the Traffic Courts.  A real demotion each time, I'll tell you!  But during lunch I got to explore downtown Los Angeles, which was worth the hassle.
The only part that was irritating each time was der Brucer's infinite curiosity and desire to discuss the cases while I was empaneled.  He never understood that I didn't want his imput!
It's chili night tonight!  Yummers!  The beefy and porky mixture is simmering in a Dutch oven as I write.  And I finally found some decent corn tortillas to go with the chili!  Now all I have to do is dice up some white onion and shred some cheese, and heat up the beans to go on the side.  (And if der Brucer really wants a dollop of sour cream, I'll let him have that, too.)
Evening all.  This will be short and sweet.  I’m not feeling my best (again, I know, but I can't help it) and will be heading off to dream land in a very short time.
Busy day.  Went to the Public Works Rodeo.  That’s a fun day for the people who work with the heavy equipment.  It gives them time try their skill doing things like picking up a golf ball will a bull dozer and trying for a hole in one or some such.
I tried my hand at tossing some bean bags but I couldn’t hit the side of barn if my life depended on it.  Then I tried the wheelbarrow race.  It had a balls on top of a board that you had to keep on the board while going through obstacles.  I almost made it until the last obstacle did me in.  Ah, well.
I forgot my reading glasses but did the typing test anyway.  I managed to do 55 WPM with no errors.  Not bad considering the test was blurry to me and I had to squint a couple of times to read it.
They also had a rep from the medical insurance company doing fat to body mass readings.  According to their scale, I weigh 128 lbs (!) which puts me one point over the ideal fat/body count for my height and age.  That means I am  (according to their chart) Slightly Obese.  Somehow I am not worried about it.
Your day sounds very interesting and fun, especially getting out of the office & doing something different.
Remember you weighed more with clothes on.  My pajamas alone weigh 1 pound.  Day clothes can weigh much more.  I don’t know when you normally weigh yourself, but I do it before I eat & drink.  That could also make a difference.
TCB, good vibes a-comin'. :)
128 pounds = obese?  (I've never before heard or read the term "slightly obese," an inherently contradictory phrase.)
Here are the facts:
Obese = a BMI (body mass index) of 29.9 or greater.  A woman would have to be 4'6" in order for 128 pounds to add up to obesity.
For a 5 foot tall woman, 128 pounds would be at the top end of the "healthy" range, with a BMI of 25.   This is assuming a medium frame; someone with a small frame should probably weigh a little bit less, and someone with a large frame could reasonably weigh a little bit more.
BMI 19.9 or less is "underweight"
BMI 20-25 is "normal" or "healthy" range
BMI 25.1-26.9 is "marginally overweight"
BMI  27-29.9 is "overweight"
BMI 30+ is "obese"
Sorry if I seem a tad obsessive, but there are so many young women out there with self-image issues (not to mention eating disorders), and that's all we need is some insurance doctor out there telling women that 128 pounds is obese (whether or not it's modified with the word "slightly")!
Title: Re:THE FROLICSOME IMP
Post by: Jane on March 31, 2004, 07:02:44 PM
Lulu, is this for men or women?  Women have a much higher BMI then men.
According to your scale, “BMI 25.1-26.9 is marginally overweight”, I am marginally overweight.  Now I have gained a few pounds recently, putting me at a whopping113 pounds on my 5’3¼” frame with a BMI that ranges between 27 & 29.
Now this woman who is a tad obsessive, really feels fat ;D
Good evening!
Went to see William Finn's Elegies at Singature Tehatre tonight...  I'm still a bit "numb", but it's a good numb.  So much more emotional than I ever expected - and I knew what to expect.  And the emotional wallop also seemed to catch most of the other audience members off guard too.  There were many comments of "That's not what I expected," whispered on the way out of the theatre.  And there were also many hugs exchanged too.  And I got to exchange a few too with some of the cast/friends and the musical director.
A beautiful evening.
So... nothing really more to say... Or I'd start crying again...  :-[
DR TCB - Many good vibes sent your way.  Who knows, maybe you'll have to start burning the pages of your novel/play/opera... and then you'll get a knock at your door asking for a match to light a candle... And in the light of that candle, you realize that it's  ________.
 :-*
And, ladies, the last time I weighed 128 pounds.... Hmmm...... ;)
Questions:
Bullshit!: Have the film alternate versions of the show so they can eventually be shown on commercial television?
After some of the people who were made fools of themselves ever refuse to sign waivers?
And why do you think the fools who were fooled agreed to let themselves on the show?
Did any of the hidden camera things ever fall flat so they were never aired?
Kritzer novels: Have you heard from any of the actors and actresses who were mentioned in the novels?
The Benjamin Kritzer Songbook: Were they written for the novels or written by the very young Bruce Kimmel. If not what was the first song you ever composed and do you still have it?
The wonderful cinemas and buildings that you frequented are they still in existance or have they been demolished and replaced with new ones?
Have you ever thought about a Kritzerland tour?
Was the ending of Kritzer Time planned since the first novel?
One of the things I enjoyed about Kritzer Time was that I can relate to what happened to him in the 60's. Was the 60's the best decade of Benjamin Kritzer's life and of his creator?
Well, we no longer have to worry about my desecration of The Country's In the Very Best of Hands; the number has been cut from the revue.  The director was worried that there was too little time to rehearse it, and so I gave up on it with no argument.  I'd spent the entire day cutting the number, and pasting tiny bits of lyrics over old lyrics (for this and another number).
I've done jury duty three times, and, the last time, learned everything there is to know about open heart surgery.  Yes, I could actually perform it, if pressed.  In order to decide the merits of a malpractice case (in which the patient died during the procedure), we heard all sorts of testimony of the right and wrong way to cut open a sternum.
Once I had a drug gang attempted murder, and the judge was none other than the very famous Leslie Crocker Snyder, who reminded me of Murphy Brown.  We got sequestered one night in the Vista hotel, part of the World Trade Center.
The first time, it was all about a homeless guy who set another homeless guy on fire.  In that I learned a lot about the lives of the homeless.  I left thinking they shouldn't have such easy access to matches.
