Post by: bk on April 01, 2004, 12:02:13 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know what foolish things are expected, so put on your fool's cap and post foolish postings all the livelong day.  We want to see the most foolishly foolish posts on all the Internet.  And a happy foolish birthday to sometimes lurker VinTek!

Good morning, all!  Has anyone else this morning had a hard time getting this site to load in?  I had a devil of a time.

My most foolish action, which turned out quite well, was telephoning BK and begging him to hire me.  Since I tend to perform foolish acts every day, April 1 seems like an ordinary day for me, but I will mention some foolish songs I like a lot:

My Foolish Heart (Victor Young)
My Foolish Heart (Kurt Weill)
These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You)
April Fooled Me
What Kind of Fool Am I
The Fool on the Hill
Fools Rush In
What Kind of Fool Am I

What about April songs:
Little April Shower
April Showers
April in Fairbanks
April Love
April in Paris

Good morning all.

First, I'm so sorry Ann/Jane.  I did it again.  It's like when I type Shrill instead of Shill.  I don't know why I DO that.

I'm home from work today.  I've been up all night with a tooth ache.  I'm calling the dentist as soon as he opens and pray he can take me early.  My Aprils Fool joke may be on me because I might be one tooth short by tonight.

I'm sorry to be a baby about this but GOD does this HURT.  I don't think the kidney stones were this bad.  It's been hurting since the weekend but not like this.  I made an appointment with the dentist on Monday  for 3:30 today thinking it wasn't that bad but now it's THAT bad.    I want the DENTIST[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%] N*O*W !!!![/move]

I called to try to get in sooner but he's booked soild.  Thank GOD I made the appointment when I did.

As for the chart, I don't know what they used. I only know the guy said I was one point over for my age/height but that was no problem.

As for when I've embarrased myself.  Gee, so much to pick from.  The latest being last night when I confused Jane/Ann.  AGAIN! :-[

Re: last night's AMERICAN IDOL:

I always like to try to figure out the bottom three by where the contestants are sitting.  When Ryan started I knew Amy Adams was going to be one of the three (because Fantasia, George and JPL weren't leaving).

Ryan did trick me at the end. Cause Camille and John S were sitting at the end. But he did Diana, then went to Camille (to tell her she was safe). Then it was between LaToya and John S for the bottom 3.

I know LaToya is better. But I was hoping it would be her (since I knew she would be the first person to go sit down and be safe).

Red-headed John S looked stunned when LaToya's name was called instead of his.  The voters are clearly nuts because people like Jon Peter and red-head John are never in the bottom 3 even when they are bad (I do love them both, but ...).

So it was Jennifer Hudson, LaToya and Amy, with Amy leaving.

I felt bad for her. But of the 3, I liked her the least.  And to me, she never had a chance to win.

I was stunned Camille wasn't in the bottom three.

But at least LaToya being in the bottom three this week means her fans will probably rally next week.

Seems to be OK now but I did have a difficult time getting into the board this morning.

I'll have to hunt in the recesses of my memory to come up with a foolish incident. I think I have buried them all.

Twentieth Century last night was servicable, nothing more. The sets and costumes were very nice. I liked the design but then I'm a sucker for 1930s looks. The performances ranged from OK to one note loud. I don't know why Dan Butler (who was wonderful in his one man show The Only Thing Worse You Could Have Told Me) was doing a not very good and not very consistent Irish accent. Julie Halston was the best person in the show, IMHO. Both Baldwin and Heche seemed to be yelling the entire time. I know that both characters are over the top and wild, loopy people but there was no range. When you come in on your first entrance at the top, there's no place to go. I didn't see Heche in Proof. She was supposed to be wonderful. I wish I had seen her so I could have something to judge her by because this performance isn't much more than mugging and funny faces and loud voices. I don't know the original script but I know this version was cut and re-written by Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor). There are some very funny lines but frankly, I prefer the musical version of the show (On the 20th Century).

And now I must get back to work.

I have the entire $50 pledged but I won't collect it until we're ready to send in the forms.  I will find out where to get the forms and proceed from there.  I know we have until November for books published in 2004, but I'll get started now.

BK - Do we have to wait for the Broadway World interview for the answers to yesterday's questions?

Jose - Who is in the DC ELEGIES?  Is it a local cast?  The NY cast featured Betty Buckley, Carolee Carmello and more.  I went because of the cast but found the material wonderful.  A lot of it was done in the Finn concert this week.

DR Ben,

I always enjoy the reviews at HHW. Thanks for all yours. I think I've seen Anne Heche in only Six Days, Seven Nights. Her performance in that movie sounds much like the one you saw in 20th Century - loud, mugging, funny faces.

There are several others as well.  As I said LOTS of popups and a bit slow, but FREE and you still have the WWW!

I was stunned by all three of last night's bottom three on IDOL. They are among the best singers there and they are three singers who almost never go flat when they sing. Amy has been shooting herself in the foot by trying too many head voice notes when her power is in her chest voice. In Jennifer's case, America just does not like her attitude, I don't think. She's an excellent singer and probably the least vocally affected of the three black divas, but I don't think she'll last much longer even with excellent performances. Obviously, voters are phoning in for their favorites based on things other than vocal ability.

It certainly should be a wake-up call for Latoya's fans. Last year, Ruben got put in the bottom three one week, and the audience and judges were so stunned they could hardly speak. Last night's shock about Latoya being there was also obvious. I didn't care for her song this week, but she so obviously outsang John and Camile that it's ridiculous. But now her fans see that if they want her to progress, they've got to vote for her and not for "another" favorite.

I think John Stevens expected to be gone last night and the multiple times the camera focused on his face registered first his look of resignation to his fate and then the simply stunned realization that he did not get voted off even with the worst vocal performance I've ever heard on the show.

MattH re: last night's American Idol.

I think people are simply voting for their favorites and not basing it all on Tuesday night's performance.  I actually think this is a good way to look at it.  If one of the better singers has a bad night, I don't think they should automatically be voted off.

But that said, it is troublesome when people's favorites aren't as good as some of the others.  I have that problem.  But luckily for them, I cannot vote. :)

Btw, I can easily explain why performers who never go flat get eliminated (over those with who do and who have terrible pitch problems ...)

Think of who is voting.  If you think they know about pitch ... they don't!

My favorite "fool" song -- "The April Fools"!

Last night's "American Idol" was shocking!

Shocking, I say!

Simply shocking!

That Camile and John were left sitting with the rest of the field while three vastly superior talents were on the chopping block is a disgrace.

Both Camile's fans and John Stevens' fans are making their idols into jokes.

The camera on John Stevens' face last night revealed the raw emotion he was feeling -- about sitting down while LaToya was in the bottom three.  He KNEW it was his time to go and he KNEW the three ladies are far better than he is at this stage.  It was gratifying to see that acknowledgement on his face.

Camile, as usual, offered a blank stare, along with another hideous hairdon't!

And thank the stars that whatever JPL had done to his hair Tuesday night wasn't permanent.

Hey, re: Camille (does her name have one L or two?).

I cannot figure out why she wasn't in the bottom three.  I didn't think she had many fans.  Hasn't she been in the bottom 3 every week?
Title: Re:WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?
Post by: Matt H. on April 01, 2004, 08:47:14 AM
Anyone can have an off night, and I wouldn't hold it against any singer for one bad night or one bad song choice that didn't reflect the colors of their voice.

That said, when someone like Camile who hasn't had a SINGLE good night gets voted back week after week, it's pretty demoralizing. I read on another site that with her and Jasmine both being from Hawaii, there is a huge block of Hawaiians voting for them each week regardless of how well or poorly they did. With Camile almost getting voted off last week, I guess they really came out in force and may keep her around much longer while better singers get the shaft. Criminal, but as Simon said last night, when you turn the voting over to the public, you have to live with the decision. I can and will. But I don't have to like it.

[glow=Lime Green,2,300]Pain Relieving Vibes For Danise[/glow]

For the past five or six years, I've spent a week during the summer or fall at  the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY.  Omega is a sort of holistic learning center/retreat/spa/spiritual center that's located along a small lake.  My favorite way to end a day there is to sit by myself at the lake beach and take in the quiet beauty of the night.  It's not a totally isolated area at that time of night--other guests occaisionally come by, young couples do some makin' out, and there's also a camp ground nearby--but it's peaceful enough to be alone with your thoughts for a while.  The first week I ever spent up there co-incided with a waxing full moon which was absolutely beautiful to behold.  On my last night there, when the moon was at her peak, I got up from my bench on the beach and danced for her.  With full abandon and joy.  I was not Astaire or Kelly or Travolta or even Jerry Lewis, for that matter.  And there may or may not have been other people there, but I didn't care.  The moon seemed to like it.  And it was just such a rush to let go like that.  Not exactly the most foolish thing I've ever done, but one that I look back most fondly on.

I just read an advanced review for the DVD release of THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH that said the transfer is so jaw-droppingly gorgeous that it looks like Paramount used the same ultra-resolution process on it that Warners used on SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD. They couldn't have, of course, but it does make one anxious to see the DVD, even if one, like me, isn't a great fan of the movie.

I saw the dvd of House Of Fog And Sand yesterday.  I won't give away the ending.  But I wish they had gone in a different direction.  My sis was watching with me, and she had read the book.  And she didn't remember some of the stuff from the movie happening in the book.

Very good movie.  But it got too crazy for me at the end.  And watching one of the deleted scenes (it seemed like an alternate ending) made it seem like they were thinking of going in an even stranger direction.

Jennifer, thank you.  I am really puzzled as to why the tour is passing us up.  We have some good theater here.  I would have expected the show to be at the Ginger Rogers Craterion Theater in Medford.  Needles to say, I’m very disappointed.

Danise I hope your tooth can be saved.  GOOD VIBES!

I know I’m an expert at doing foolish things, just can’t think of one now.

One April Fools Day I called Keith’s office & left a message for him to call Mr. Lyon, leaving the number of the zoo.  Not an original thought but he did find it funny.  The joke turned out to me on too since he tried all day & only got a busy signal.  It wasn’t until he got home & I began quizzing him did he get the joke.  Zoos must dread April 1st.

Thanks for asking, Jane.  He is bucking up.  Physically, he has had a lot of "down time" in the last two weeks.  Although he has had some high-activity days--cleaning the house from top to bottom, for example--he is having to sleep a lot more than usual, which frustrates him.

Hasn't yet visited Mom's grave, which may help bring closure to things.  Other than that life is suprisingly like it was BI (before incarceration), for which we are both thankful.

And one other observation.  Reflecting on the Nature of People.

When he was first arrested--two years ago--and held overnight without medications for arraignment, the one angel who appeared was a young homeless man who helped him get through the ordeal until he was released--and then mysteriously disappeared before we could offer him a ride and a thank-you.

For the last month, when those who are sworn to relieve human suffering and minister to the sick showed a complete lack of compassion, the one person who served as friend, mentor, psychotherapist, counselor and personal aide, the one person who helped keep him sane was a convicted murderer.

It makes me rethink all my prejudgements of people.

Off to lunch meeting.  Keep the home fries burning.  I spent all morning on the phone with McAfee and AOL because weirdnesses continue to plague my system.  I'm finally having a computer expert come to my house tomorrow to purge the computer of whatever is causing these multiple problems.  Something went screwy somewhere and it's time to stop putting band-aids on things (I'm sure part of the problem is that every AOL tech tells you to do different things and I'm sure that's when something went wrong).  I will then hopefully be able to have normal AOL again and not be a beta tester.

Donna Migliaccio is an on-line friend of der Brucer's and mine, a wonderful person and quite talented, not to mention one of the founders of the Signature Theater.

I scored the Signature Theatre's production of ASSASSINS, in which Donna played Sara Jane Moore.  She was so wonderful juggling her purse and her pistol!

My goodness, almost 3:30 in the afternoon here, and I've accomplished nothing all day but surf the internet, spend money, and engage in lively chatter. I know, who's complaining, but I can't believe how fast this Arpil Fool's Day has gone.

Without a doubt, my favorite "fools" song and my favorite "April" song is Bacharach and David's April Fools, as sung by Dionne Warwick.

Hi all,

Just got home from the dentist.  It turns out that the sinus headache I've been talking about for the past week or so turned mean and I have a massive sinus infection.  Nothing is wrong with my teeth except I'm grinding them at night.  I had to have a night guard made.  Joy.  I have to go back on Tuesday to get the guard and have a  check up.   Then back 10 days after that to check the guard and another check up.

I never would have guessed that it could make your teeth/mouth hurt as badly as mine is hurting me right now.

I've got 4 kinds of meds to take so if I sound a little "off" (I heard that)  it's because everything I'm taking.

I'm going to lay down now.  Talk with you all later.

Favorite April Fool's Joke:

My fourth least favorite boss, Michael, earned that distinction simply for being such a twit.  He was gullible to a genuine fault, and even after being told the true information would refuse to believe it, because the true info contradicted what he had heard first, which had to be correct because it was first.

He was not generally respected, and this extended up and down the line, right up the the office manager's secretary, Sandy.  So when I suggested the following, Sandy agreed to the prank wholeheartedly.

Michael's schedule put him in the office a full hour before me, supervising the rest of the clerks.  In turn, I was pretty much on my own during the last hour, taking care of the clean-up jobs at the end of the day.  This particular April Fool's Day, I left him a note, a nice big one, telling him that the office manager had come by to ask Michael a few questions after he had left.  No indication about what the questions were about, of course.  And, since the manager wouldn't arrive at the office for at least another hour, Michael was left to stew over what the manager had wanted all that time.

When Sandy arrived in the office, she made a point of dropping by the file room, where Michael asked her what the manager had wanted.  As we had planned, she replied, "Not to worry, it's already been taken care of."  And no matter how much Michael pressed her, she let it go at that.

By the time I arrived in the office, Michael was already climbing the walls, trying to remember what it could have been that was so important!  I just kept my mouth shut for a couple of hours, until I finally took pity on the guy and told him the truth.  Michael refused to believe that Sandy and I had conspired together on this prank!  It took a meeting with the manager to get through to him!

Happy April Fool's Day!

I'm really not a big April Fools Day person for some reason.  I think it's because I'm VERY gullible, so I tend to fall for jokes people play on me, but it's seldom vice versa.

Songs I like fitting today's theme:

April in Paris
These Foolish Things
What Kind of Fool Am I?
The Joker

If I may: Here's the review from the Washington Post. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A37707-2004Mar30.html).  Donna Migliaccio is an on-line friend of der Brucer's and mine, a wonderful person and quite talented, not to mention one of the founders of the Signature Theater.  (She also appeared recently as Domina in the ST's production of AFTHOTWTTForum, and in their revisals of Allegro and Twentieth Century.)

I met her after "Allegro" and she was sooo nice!  I need to buy my "Elegies" tix as soon as possible...it seems (judging by Jose's reaction and by the reviews) that they aren't going to last long.

I really wish I had started going to Signature Theatre shows earlier; they're such a wonderful company.  And next season they're doing "Pacific Overtures" and a new La Chiusa musical, "The Highest Yellow" about Van Gogh and his doctor.  When I read that, I just about fainted.  I think La Chiusa is my favorite post-Sondheim composer.

Good vibes to Danise!!

As opposed to the "bust" that the first two winners have been?

:D

I'd like to think it will go up a bit from here.  There are some wonderful singers in this group, much moreso than in the first two competitions.

I think it high praise of the "audience vote" that Clay Aiken, even as runner-up, has been having great success.  Had Simon had his way, Clay would have been sent packing early in the competition.  The only singers he has held in such low esteem in this competition are Matt Rogers and Diana DeGarmo.

Isn't it terribly odd - and WRONG - that he has coddled Camile while vilifying far superior singers?????  I think it's because he thinks she has the right "look".   Simon is all about the look over every other consideration, while Randy and Paula know that the look can be created and that the competition is about SINGING.

I scratch my head and wonder what Simon saw in Ruben that he refuses to see in Amy or Jennifer...perhaps they're not fat enough????  I think there has been a huge double-standard in this regard.  What on earth makes Ruben more palatable than Jennifer...or last year's Kimberly Locke?

Here's my proudest achievement in April Fool's jokes.

When I was 'round nine years old, my brother Eddie was just learning to read, so he had a number of children's books checked out from the public library.  I took down the names of the books he'd checked out, and went to the library myself and checked out the same books...in French.  While he wasn't looking, I replaced his English books with my French books, and managed to convince Eddie that he'd forgotten how to read.  Of course, he was rather upset about this development...

And even though I got punished for my mean ol' joke, I could tell that Mum was actually pretty amused by the whole thing.

Oh, and here I am, reading and enjoying Kritzer Time.  Don't I look enraptured???

Another office prank:

The rule in the file room was that we were to answer the phones for file requests within three rings.  This was part of our "service with a smile" rules, and a number of the other clerks hated the rule.  One of these rule-snubbers was Peggy, who would regularly answer the phone "when she got to it."

One of the other rules was that we were all supposed to take turns answering the phone.  Three phone calls in a row, and we passed the phone duty to the next person.  (And yes, there were some on the staff that would pass the phones after just two calls, but that was another problem.)

Peggy was off for a few days, which didn't bother me in the least because she was a highly judgemental sort.  She hadn't actually told me "God doesn't love you" when she learned that I'm gay (Rita was the one who said that), but it was certainly part of her attitude.  After Peggy returned to the office, I decided to see if we could get some extra energy out of her.  I told her that the rule had been changed somewhat.  If someone didn't answer the phone within the three-ring time limit, that person had to start all over with the three-call count.  Fourth ring, it was back to first call.

And she bought it!

I had to scurry behind her back, of course, letting everyone else in on the joke in case she checked with them about the rule change.  Fortunately, Peggy was not that well loved, and everyone went along with the prank.

You never saw anyone run to the phone as fast as Peggy did that entire day!  She almost knocked some of the other clerks down, just to get to the phone in time and not be "penalized."  It wasn't until quitting time rolled around that Michael found out about what was going on and ruined everything by telling Peggy that he hadn't made any such ruling.

Even then, I almost convinced him that such a rule would be a good thing in reality.

I can be such a stinker!

Maya - I'll join you in saying that Michael John LaChiusa is my favorite three-named post-Sondheim composer.

For utter foolishness, see my post from five months ago about how I got into some heavy mud on Halloween.

After working from 10-4:30 sans break, I'm at the internet café before returning for the first rehearsal.  The other number I pasted tiny bits of lyric on, the one I didn't write, is not ready for distribution because the director doesn't like the final bars.  I feel, the earlier music is distributed, the better.  We go up in three weeks.  It should be worth seeing.

One of our most talented men has been ejected, which saddens me.  But as Woody Allen once said, 90% of success is just showing up.  Which this guy didn't.

My workplace had been curiously devoid of "unseemly" behavior most of the day until about 30 minutes ago when someone fell for a message she got telling her to call Ms. Ellie Fant at a number that belongs to the Oakland Zoo.

I, myself, have attempted to play something similar, telling our Personnel secretary I'd received an errant call from a gentleman wanting to verify employment.  I'd have forwarded the message but he had another call so I took his name and number.  Please call Mr. Lyon at (number of the Oakland Zoo).

She sent me a reply thanking me and asking me to foward all such calls to her whenever I get them.  Still, she hasn't called Mr. Lyon, or even sussed out that I might be fooling her.

I was out for much of the day, just got in. Only one April Fools joke played on me today(by my daughter on the phone). I HATE April Fools jokes. :P
When Rachel was still living at home, she'd always find some way to ambush me on April 1. One year - her proudest achievement she tells me - she rigged the kitchen sink faucet so that when I turned it on in the morning, it sprayed me in the face. Now that she's in San Francisco she has to get her jollies on the phone. At least I'm not dripping wet.

LOL-my older son didn't need April Fools to play that trick on me.  The first time he would have been in big trouble if I hadn't changed out of a silk blouse before doing the dishes.  Note I said first time.  He often threatens to do it to me again.

About five years ago the “boys” (they are now 24 & 27) put something in Keith’s mug that should have foamed when he added liquid.  It didn’t foam & Keith drank it, we guess.  That scared them out of any more practical jokes.  They watched Keith all day to make sure he didn’t get sick.

Jennifer, thank you.  I am really puzzled as to why the tour is passing us up.  We have some good theater here.  I would have expected the show to be at the Ginger Rogers Craterion Theater in Medford.  Needles to say, I’m very disappointed.

Jane, does Medford often get the "A" tours coming through?  I rarely (if ever) see them on those tour listings.  Usually from Seattle to Portland, then straight down to San Francisco or San Jose.  Where I do see Medford pop up is on the schedules of the "B" tours, the ones that also hit Spokane, Boise, and Anchorage on their Northwest swing.

And did I tell you that my parents have sold their house and are moving to The Valley??? Fifty-one years on that corner, in Kritzer Land. They found a house near Tami's, just off the Simi Freeway, at Porter Ranch. I'll be heading down probably Tuesday or Wednesday (hate to leave my flowers right before the big explosion of blooms...) to help pack 'em up and move 'em out. It's about time - they have outlived everyone in the old neighborhood, and should have moved 6 or 7 years ago. Farewell to Preuss Road, corner of Sawyer, one block East of Robertson, 8 blocks South of Pico. And the same phone number all those years. Where does it go, when it goes? Time just seems to telescope into itself, into another whole dimension. Musings.

My mom used to give us each a quarter on Saturdays, and we walked down to Pico Blvd, to the Stadium. Cheapest, best babysitter in the world: double feature, cartoons, even a yo-yo contest... we were out of her hair, out of her house from noon to 5 every Saturday -- sitting, no doubt, very close to our neighbor, Ben Kritzer. And the Lido - that was walking distance, too. The trampoline place. It was a wonderful place to grow up, and it's wonderful to remember.

There is only one family still there, on the block, who were there when we moved in all those years ago. The Kirsch family - they had eight kids, and naming them all, in order, was the same sort of feat as naming the seven dwarves or Santa's reindeer.

Frances, JoAnne, Larry (may he rest in peace), Mary Jane, Eddie (may he rest in peace), Kathy, Terry, Jimmy. And all the girls had Marie as a middle name, except Mary Jane. And all the boys had Joseph in there. Eddie died young in an airplane accident with the boy next door; and Larry's helicopter went down over Haleakala Crater, after surviving so many missions in Viet Nam and as a pilot for the movies... Wow, that was fast!  Did they sell it on the open market or before listing it?

My Dad's condo was suppose to close escrow today-April Fools on us.  Now it should close on Tues. or Wed.

Jane, I remember Jordan Almonds. They do look like little colored Easter eggs. And if you peel off the hard shell, you get nuts, too! Mmmmmmm. When I worked for Keith at the movie theater, I think we sold those. Yipes, that was a hundred years ago.

So long ago I don't remember it.  Which theater, the Stanley Warner?

Does anyone know why they're called Jordan Almonds?

I just found this at www.fda.gov (http://www.fda.gov/ora/compliance_ref/cpg/cpgfod/cpg570-100.html):

Sec. 570.100 Jordan Almonds - Common or Usual Name (CPG 7112.01)

BACKGROUND:

Administration Information Letter (AIL) No. 173, October 20, 1941, stated that the term "Jordan" almonds was not considered misleading solely because almonds were not of Palestinian origin. This AIL read as follows:

"We have your letter of September 28 inquiring as to the use of the term 'Jordan Almonds' on labels for sugar-coated almonds in which almonds other than 'genuine Spanish Jordan Almonds' are used.

"Upon receipt of a similar inquiry as to the present-day consumer understanding of the term 'Jordan Almonds" in connection with the confection you have in mind we undertook a little research as to the origin and evolution of the term. As far as we can determine the term 'Jordan Almonds' according to one source of information came from the French word 'jardin,' meaning 'garden,' 'hence, a cultivated almond' (Webster's New International Dictionary). Another source of information indicated that at one time the term referred to a variety of almonds originally grown along the Jordan River in Palestine characterized by long, thin, slender, rather smooth kernels in thick, heavy shells.

"The information we were able to elicit as to present-day trade and consumer understanding led us to conclude that to consumers the term may have no significance other than identification of the confection consisting of candy-coated almonds so long as the almonds used are of a certain type or shape that has been found most suitable for candy coating -- in other words, a shape similar to that of the original Jordan almond which would be a long, thin, slender, rather smooth kernel in a thick, heavy shell.

"In the light of our present information we have not been disposed to institute action against this confection labeled 'Jordan Almonds' if the almonds used are of a variety having the physical characteristics described above no matter what may be their source. Of course if it should develop that consumers are in fact being misled as to the identity of the almonds used by this term it would be necessary for us to recall this opinion and advise the trade accordingly."

POLICY:

The term "Jordan Almonds" is considered the common or usual name for candy-coated almonds. The almonds used are varieties that are long, thin, slender, rather smooth kernels.

Hehe...who is your favorite 2-name?

The writing team of Richard Maltby, Jr. (hope no one counts that as three names) and David Shire - aces in my book.  I very much enjoyed their famous Broadway flop, Big (some flop, though - it ran six months), and was thoroughly entertained by Closer Than Ever, Baby and Starting Here Starting Now.  If we're looking for a single person (for, after all, the 3 3-named-wonders often write alone), I'd go with William Finn.  I was very favorably impressed by many of the John Bucchino songs on his Grateful album.  I also admire Craig Carnelia greatly.  Does Stephen Schwartz count as post-Sondheim?  I love a lot of his shows, too.

Jordan almonds -- hadn't thought of them in ages, and my mouth just watered thinking of them.

WONDERFALLS will not only be facing off against THE APPRENTICE but also against CSI. Not much chance for a spike in ratings. I wonder why Fox didn't try it on Mondays at 8 where BOSTON PUBLIC used to be? That would seem to be a perfect time slot for it.

Back from wedding rehearsal! Whew! Rehearsal dinner was yummy and I had a Sour Apple Martini too!  I don't have to anything much for the wedding except watch after 2 year old Taylor, my nephews daughter as my nephew is a groomsman and his wife is a maid of honor. I do get to sit up front with my the bride's parent's (my sis an brother-in-law).

Still no Freddy, however. That little (big) dickens is never going outside again, ever! Tomorrow I will check with the neighbors to see if they have seen him (he is best cat friends with the cats on either side of me) and check out the Humane Society before the wedding, if I have I am able.

Jane, the Ginger Rogers Theater used to be the Craterian Theater. That is where we would go to see all of the Disney movies when I was a kid. My brother Allen would take me and my little brother there to see the Sinbad movies, and that is also where I saw Star Wars when it first came out! What memories I have to that place!

In the 1980s it started showing X-Rated feature films! Quite a switch from showing Disney stuff! When we were of age my friends Steve and Marci and I went there and saw WANDA WHIPS WALLSTREET! LOL!

I have just returned, Dear Readers, from an evening with Miss Patti LuPone at the Cinegrill, in the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in downtown Hollywood, California.

Although it's been over a year since the Cinegrill was given a new, elegant space in the hotel, this was my first foray since it reopened.  The new space (and a beefed up lineup relative to the acts they previously had there) coincided with a name change to "Feinstein's [as in Michael] at the Cinegrill," though I saw in the paper yesterday that Mr. Feinstein is withdrawing his name from the deal due to some kind of disagreement with management (whatever that means.)

The room is quite nice, with a small stage front and center.  Four concentric semi-circles of seating rise from the stage level, so sight lines are good.  The seating on the first two rings consist of banquettes and small round tables.  The back two rings offer barstools in front of a sweep of a bar-like counter.

When a show is well-sold, as tonight's was, the seating is tight.  A three course prix-fixe dinner precedes the show.  Wolfgang Puck is listed as the chef de cuisine.  My dinner was OK.  Not great, but not bad either.  Mr. Michael Feinstein himself was seated at a table on the second ring, just below my third ring seat.

This was Miss LuPone's first venture into cabaret in twenty-five years.  She did not do any of her Broadway stuff, but rather a show devoted to songs of torch.  The familiar material ("Some Day He'll Come Along," "Frankie and Johnnie," etc.) tended to be of the belt-it-out-Patti variety.  The songs that were unfamiliar to me tended to be of more introspective nature, and La LuPone managed to tone down her effort accordingly.  The highlight of the set (which ran about 55 minutes) was a brief "revenge" sequence, during which Miss LuPone magnificently nailed "Who's Sorry Now?" and "I Want to Be Around."
