Title: THE THINKING CAP
Post by: bk on April 09, 2004, 12:01:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've thought about the notes whilst wearing your collective thinking caps, and now you are ready to post until the cows come home.  Let's have deliriously delirious postings today, shall we? :-*

All alone. And nobody answered my question about the Post Office. :'( I'll just have to go there and check it out.

BTW - A little Passover bird (Moishe, the parrot) told me that for those with dietary restrictions because of Passover, there will be delicious chocolate macaroons - Kosher for Passover - at the Kritzer Time signing/reading.

Yes, Panni, the post office is indeed open on Good Friday.

It would be difficult to find ANY commercial business open in Australia on Good Friday - certainly not in the morning. It is a more significant day than Christmas day. Sporting fixtures are not held during the day either. Some businesses are allowed to open after midday. Easter Saturday is business as usual but Sunday and Monday are holidays (Tuesday used to be).
CDs:
1. Alice in Wonderland - Disney soundtrack - Great.
2. Eric Kunzel "Sailing". Love this CD
3. Katie Melua "Call Off The Search" - A wonderful CD.
4. Jonathan Cerrada "A Chaque Pas". Great pop.
(Official entry for the 2004 Eurovision Song contest).

What, BK, no ham chunks?  Well, if there are no ham chunks, I will definitely not be dancing the Hora at your signing (which would probably drive sales away).  I'll settle for cake and coke and maybe a cheese slice.  I will bring my book which I forgot to have you sign the night you gave it to me (stupid me!).

BK, a comment about this irritating pustule who can't admit he's wrong on whatever this other site is you disappear to...If ant gets in your way, you can either step over it or step on it. But don't let  get you all in a lather.   Or as they say in internet lingo: Do not feed the troll.

Dear Friend BK, I'd suggest going to a place that makes t-shirts and having one printed  "THE PONTIFF IS IN"  for this person.   He'll probably be so charmed by such an accurate gift that he'll miss the point, but few others will.

CD:  Renee Fleming's recording of RUSALKA
Marianne Faithfull's "Ballad of Lucy Jordan"
DVD:  NAKED SPACE, which got lost in the shuffle last week of the pops arrangements
ROOM WITH A VIEW (new edition)
VCR:  Videos from a friend of her AIDS work & career time in Russia in the early 90s

That's enough!

We're going out to Long Island for the Easter weekend so we won't be doing much DVD or VCR watching. I thought everything was running smoothly w/the new hard drive on the computer but now the DVD and CR-RW drives seem to be misbehaving. Although they are covered under warranty, the thought of replacing both of those drives after just a year makes me more than a little annoyed.

At work I am listening to (again) 3 Capitol Sings CDs courtesy of DR Jay. My collection is now complete. All 20 CDs

Mood Indigo: Capitol Sings Duke Ellington
Far Away Places: Capitol Sings Around the World
Too Marvelous for Words: Capitol Sings Johnny Mercer

It seems that I was wrong yesterday when I posted that we broke the 37,000 post number. I seem to get two different numbers when I look at posts. There is a number up in the address bar but on reflection it seems not to be the number of posts. We are at (approximately) 36,696 right now so we won't hit 37,000 for a while and then, as BK said, we will aim for 40,000
Title: Re:THE THINKING CAP

Ben - The number attached to posts in the address bar reflects the total number of posts to all the HHW boards.  The landmarks we seem to celebrate have to do with the number of posts to the Daily Discussions board.

Such an unseemly hour indeed.  After an entire week of getting eight to nine hours of sleep, here I am, up at five-forty-five am.  It's still dark out, for crying out loud.

Pogue: I normally don't feed the troll, but this guy has got to be stopped.  I'm not going to carry it on much further, but at least I've exposed his total insanity, and hopefully that will lead others to take his posts with a large container of salt.  Interestingly, I don't go to that other board very often.

Oh, my, it's 6:44 in LA and Mr. K is awake.

Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Nightingale, Blackbird, teach him how to sing.

You may need a nap to get through the day, BK, although I'm up at 6am every day (during the week that is). Enjoy the quiet while it lasts, unless that unseemly Green Finch comes hopping along (oh, no, that's the Red, Red Robin and he comes bobbin' along)

Mawnin', mawnin', y'all. My sister Rikki's Tibetan terrier kept me up quite a lot of the night - she loves to snuggle, and if she has a thought, she just has to let me know, no matter what time it is...

Ride down was lovely, the same trees that were decked out in their frilly pink flowers three weeks ago have all gotten out their green satins - ah, the almond orchards of the central California velley! Whatta ride!

Heading over to the parents today, to help pack 'em up, move 'em out. Moving date is less than 3 weeks away, and there is 50 years' worth of STUFF in every closet, every corner, every hidden alcove of that huge house. Oy. Then to Riverside to see Performance Riverside's 1776 - a fave of mine, plus one of my friends is playing Old Rodney. Then more packing tomorrow, MAYBE a brief 3 hours off to ride out to Glendale and back before shlepping the elders to my other sister for a delayed Passover seder.

Bruce, my honey, I may not be able to get to the signing, but my heart would be there, eating macaroons with the best and brightest.

I found more proof about VALLEY OF THE DOLLS' release date. In the book MOVIE MUSICALS ON RECORD, it lists the release year as 1967.

The RECORD COLLECTORS PRICE GUIDE for MOVIE/TV SOUNDTRACK & ORIGINAL CAST albums, the release date is also listed as 1967.

How many references does this guy need. Preposterous!

DVD: My Favorite Year
VCR: The Band Wagon
CD: Tenacious D

What's the common bond?

I'll tell you: I'm watching all three because I'm writing something funny about the process of writing.  What I'm looking for is not the real thing, but the fantasy of what it's like to get an inspiration to write something and move it forward to amusing fruition.  So far, My Favorite Year is disappointing on this score, but I haven't finished any of the three yet.  As a songwriter, when Jack Black doesn't like the first chord his collaborator plays, I can't help laughing (Tenacious D).

Can anyone direct me to other funny fictional depictions of funny writers pounding out a funny sketch or song?

Friday Media Alert:

CD - PACIFIC 1860 (OCR)

Reading Noel Coward's diaries and just finished the torturous four months that this musical ran finding his at first enjoyable and then acrimonious relationship with Mary Martin and her hubby Richard Halliday really fascinating. I've had this cast CD for a couple of years and had never cracked the shrink wrap. Today, I will.

DVD - ZIEGFELD GIRL and then KISS ME KATE

DVR - last night's WILL & GRACE
TCM's two part documentary on Cecil B. DeMille

Jed - Thank you for the Post Office info.

bk - Very early morning is my time of day. (a Guys and Dolls reference!)  And one of my absolute favorite lyrics (and songs)...

My time of day is the dark time
A couple of deals before dawn
When the street belongs to the cop
And the janitor with the mop
And the grocery clerks are all gone.
When the smell of the rainwashed pavement
Comes up clean, and fresh, and cold
And the streetlamp light
Fills the gutter with gold
That's my time of day
My time of day

And then the most prosaic, yet most romantic line ever...
....And you're the only doll I've ever wanted to share it with me.

Good Friday one and all.  We're closed at work but Ray is working so I have one of those rare days at home when I can catch up on things I never get a chance to do like bill paying, writing e-mails and snail mail, etc.  Today I did our taxes.  I owe some Federal but am getting a refund on the state and Ray gets refunds on both.  It's times like this when Gay Marriage is really needed.  If we filed a joint return we'd be getting a much bigger refund.

I had to run over to the library for a tax return I was missing (the download for NY tax forms wasn't working) and I found it quite amusing that all the tax forms were spread out on low bookcases marked "Fiction".

CD - I recently puirchased a boxed set called "The History of Pop Radio 1920-1951.  This is a 15 Disc set for only $48 (just over $3.00 for each disc, all over 1 hour) with a real history of pop music from the period.  I'm on 1938.  Some of the songs are by the obvious people (Bob Hope and Shirley Ross doing "Thanks For the Memory" is playing now), but others are pop songs by singers you never knew did them (the preceding selection was "F. D. R. Jones" sung by Ella Fitzgerald).  An excellent set and a real bargin (thank you Michael at All Music Services).

DVD - All the new Judys.  I don't know how much I'll get through this weekend.

VHS - Nothing

Books - "The Richard Rodgers Reader" - Alter KRITZER TIME I didn't want to read any more fiction for a while (because it would have paled in comparison)  so I'm reading this collection of various writings about Rodgers, Hart & Hammerstein from books, magazines and newspapers over the years.  Very mixed, and in a couple of them I found factual errors.

LOL.....well, maybe the Wisconsin newspaper is a hoax!

DRNoel - I agree with Panni, several of the episodes of the original Dick Van Dyke show deal with the writing process.  I might also mention THE COUNTRY GIRL, although it is not a good experience about putting on a show, and if you haven't seen MOON OVER BROADWAY which is a documentary about getting a show on the boards, you might check that out.  It is an eye opener!

VHS:  STATE FAIR with Pat and Ann-Margret, etc

BK, I know from whence you come.  I spent the last year dealing head on with that supreme a-hole Newpoot on RATM.  Unfortunately, I was getting to the point where I was almost as much of an ass as he (but not quite--he somehow always manages to raise that bar.)  The good news is that I discovered HHW, and I think DRs Noel, td and Ludlow (if he showed up here more often) would agree that this is the better place to be.

I typed out my last post over an hour ago but didn't realize until just now that I didn't click the "Post" button before I left my desk.  I just spent my lunch time running around this part of the city trying to find a babka for Easter.  The two bakeries I know of around here were already out of them.  I took a chance and went into Trader Joes and they had something that they are calling a babka but it's really a cake.  It's a fake babka.  A fakeba.  I bought it anyway but I'm going to try to find some time tomorrow to hunt the bakeries of South Jersey for a real babka (with cheese or raisins.)  I don't want to have a fakeba Easter.

CD (at home):  Annie OCR.  I sometimes forget how good this show was before it started pandering to little girls and lost its bite.  There is some real anger in "We Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover".  Nowadays, that number seems to get cut.

CD (at work) Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living In Paris OCR.  It was his birthday this week and I haven't listened to this for a while.  I've never seen a production of this show and for the life of me I have a hard time imagining how it could be staged.  Even with very talented and personable singers involved, it strikes me as a very static show.

DVD:  Another one of the Lost In Space First Season Collection disks.

VCR:  Last night's Apprentice.   I watched it last night but my nephew wanted me to tape the Spider-Man 2 preview.

So what do all of you Apprentice-philes think about the Omarosa the Mole rumor now?

Topic of the Day:

In the CD player: The Thomas Crown Affair by Michel Legrand.  It's just been re-release on Varese Sarabande, thank heaven...I missed it during the .86 nanoseconds Rykodisc had made it available.  I'm not so big on the movie, mind you, but Legrand's score is marvelous.

Also...a few discs in Naxos' American Classics series.  There's no better bargain around; great music by American composers, well-played and at six to eight bucks a disc.  I'm especially enamored of the disc of Meredith Willson's two symphonies, and discs by two of my favorite composers, Jerome Moross and Roy Harris.

In the deeveedee player is Star Trek V: The Final Frontier--Special Edition and Carnival of Souls, the Wade Williams edition.  I'm not overly enthused about Criterion these days, so I think I'm okay with the barebones release of this one.

Oh, by the way, I went to the Film Score Monthly board to see what all the hubbub was about.

This "Joecaps" fellow is not only an ignorant fool, he's illiterate, too.  Grammatical errors abound in his posts, and it's obvious that he has no idea what the SHIFT key is for.  Either that, or he hasn't yet evolved opposable thumbs.

If I may wax nostalgic a moment here...there was a time, during the early days of the 'net, when internet message boards didn't have quite so many illiterate liars posting on them.  Even the FSM boards had some class.  In a way, I miss those days.  Thankfully, there are still some boards (like HHW and Scarlet Street), where there are actual, flesh-and-blood, thinking human beings posting and being heard....if I wasn't such a crotchety old atheist, I'd be thanking God.  Instead, I'll just thank BK and Richard Valley.

I think the word is that she's been a mole since the beginning.  And I think it makes some sense, especially if you add Sam to the picture.  Between the two of them, they've pulled the most outrageous crap than all of the others put together.  The only part of it that doesn't make sense is the alleged racial slur incident with Ereka.  Would Trump and Burnett risk using something like that in order to pull off a ruse?

In any case, I am completely sure that Omarosa was indeed acting as a planted saboteur last night.  The whole missing Jessica Simpson deal seemed too much of a set-up.  I'll bet we see Bill experiencing the same kind of woes next week.

The first house I ever owned was in the Greek neighborhood of Toronto ("the Danforth"). Great area of town. Everyone around there was very proud of her - as they should have been.

Really enjoyed the souped up surround sound on the KISS ME KATE DVD. The DVD does look so much sharper and more colorful than the laserdisc. If they do indeed recall the discs and issue enhanced for widescreen DVDs for it, it will be even sharper. I couldn't be happier.

It was also great to see Tommy Rall looking so fit in the documentary on the disc. I've always thought he was a magnificent dancer, and someone who never got credit for being so dazzling in his few Hollywood films. He should have had a star career as he could sing, dance, act, and had looks aplenty. Funny how lightning strikes for some and not for others.

Omarosa is bad news no matter what her role.

She blatantly lied to Kwame and about Karen's phone call.  Kwame should just fire her.

How he deals with the calamity that she has engendered will determine Trump's assessment of him.

She may well have been brought back to do the very thing she's done, but she was always irresponsible and untrustworthy even in competition...a backstabbing witch of the first order.

I'm getting a few annoying e-mails from people who just can't make it tomorrow.  These people (who do this every time I have a signing - same names all the time) are now going directly to the C list.  They have nothing to do, they just don't want to get off their sorry butt cheeks and be supportive.  But you can bet your behind if they had something going they would ask and expect me to be there to support them.  I don't believe that will be happening in the future.

Just ate some lunch and watched a few minutes of the Perry Mason I TIVOd.  How beautiful is Leslie Parrish?

The towel has been flung!

The admission of making a mistake has been made.

He looked it up in the NY Times and saw the premiere ad (December 1967) clearly stating that the LP soundtrack was available on 20th Century-Fox records.

This was done in a new thread...and he moved on to continuity for "The Sand Pebbles."

CD player (at work):  THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS.  What a delightful recording.  If it were allowed here at HHW, I would tell you how many times I groaned while listening to it.

Nothing else at home or in the car.

I was really shocked the first time I spent Holy Week in England.  When everything closed down on Good Friday, I couldn't believe it.  Then on Saturday, everything seemed back to normal, but fortunately the people at the hotel warned us ahead of time that on Easter Sunday the whole city would be shut down.

Good afternoon all
Well, I made my first appearance ever in traffic court this morning.  Heard some truly bizarre excuses for speeding, I must say.  My end result was that I deferred the ticket, forked over $100 ($22 less than the ticket amount) and agreed to keep my nose clean for a year.  This way it won't go on my record.

TOTD -
VCR - Stop The World, the Millie/Tony version.  I know most people swear he can't live up to the Anthony Newley (forgive me if spelling is wrong) version, but I quite like this one.
DVD - Nada
CD - Last Five Years soundtrack.  Our listing o' guilty pleasures the other day gave me the urge to hear it.

...I...need....caffeine.  Now.

I had 5 hours of sleep last night, and I didn't have a chance to take a nap this afternoon.  Maybe I'll just buy one of those nasty energy drinks or something.  Even though I think they (Red Bull especially) taste like cough syrup.

Jane--oh, my hair WAS big, it just doesn't show in that pic.  I'll have more in a week or so (though I don't know yet about any camisole ones; if I had any, I'd be too modest to post them...sorry Jed, lol).

CDs--"Sunday in the Park with George" OCR, "Passion" OCR, "Lolita, My Love" (yes, I know it wasn't technically recorded, hehe), "Street Scene" OCR and I'm now listening to "On The Twentieth Century."  LOVE this score!!!

DVD--"House of Sand and Fog"

VHS--nothing recently.

SAMMY STOPS THE WORLD is even worse than you've heard and I'm surprised I didn't remember it on bad movie musicals day.  I made the mistake of seeing it live.  What a waste of the wonderful, talented Marian (or is it Marion?)  Mercer.  Whatever happened to her.  I first saw has as Little Mary Sunshine (not the drag queen in CHICAGO) and followed her career for years.  She seems to have dropped out of sight in the early 80s.

DR Maya, is it the Broadway recording of "Street Scene" with Anne Jeffreys?   I'm partial to the complete English National Opera recording on TER/JAY, which has Catherine Zeta Jones doing "Moon Faced Starry Eyed."

So what do all of you Apprentice-philes think about the Omarosa the Mole rumor now?

I can only hope that she really is a mole.  It would make a lot of sense.  I would HATE to think that someone that incompetent or that much of an avoider-of-work (especially under the 24-hour video taping watched by Donald Trump himself) would be able to get where she had in life.

She was on a live recording of J. Edgar!:  The Musical as J. Edgar's mother in 1994.  It's available from L. A. Theatre Works (http://www.latw.org/catalog/item.php3?id=45&list=45,46,47,48,49&path=start/J) and is abolutely hysterical!

As for the Topic of the Day:

CD player at work:  "Barry Manilow:  The Complete Collection and Then Some..." (I bought this when it was first release about 12 years ago, but have never listened to it...until now)

In DVD player:  "Mambo Italiano (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330602/)" is a very cute movie.  "Angelo Barberini is the oddball son of Italian immigrants Gino and Maria, who inadvertently ended up in Canada rather than the States. Angelo shocks his parents by moving out on his own without getting married, and shocks them further still when he reveals that he's gay. But his boyfriend, policeman Nino Paventi isn't as ready to come out of the closet -- especially not to his busybody mother, Lina."

DVD:A few more episodes of U.S. MARSHALL.

and my Bollywood DVD for the week...LOVE IN TOKYO! Asha Parekh as an East Indian who dances on Japanese variety shows and JOy Mukherjee as the East Indian young man who falls in love with her when he sees her dance on a Japanese Variety show. Actually, my tone was not influenced one whit by his e-mails which were nothing more than a continuation of what he was saying on the board.

He asked me to send him a list of some things he "owed" me...I did...and he proceeded to ignore them and complain.

He posted a "mea culpa."   That ended the debate as far as I was concerned or involved.  He admitted he was wrong.

We (der Brucer and I) are back from the grandlad sitting.  Yes, they squirmed some, but not too much during the day.  We all went to the grocery store, and found what we needed for our evening repast that we hadn't brought with us.  Strange, how der Brucer and I always seem to end up cooking dinner for his daughter and kinsmen.  Well, not that strange, given her cooking, but all the same.

This was followed by some naps, and then we headed off to see Home on the Range, which was silly and fun, in a Pecos Bill kind of way.  Roseanne and Judi Dench make a perfect comic pairing, as unexpectedly good as Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were.  The grandlads enjoyed it.  So did der Brucer and I.

It wasn't until we got back to the kinfolk's homestead that all hell broke loose.  I've never known a family to be so ready to battle with each other as der Brucer's daughter's does, charging towards one calamity after another.  One grandlad charged upstairs to pout and hide in front of the television, the parents had not one kind word to say to each other, and the younger grandlad ran from one parent to the other shouting to get any attention.  Through it all, der Brucer and I kept our calm, keeping our voices level and modulated, temporary eyes watching the hurricane.

Der B is exhausted, sound asleep on my bed.  There's got to be a way of getting that family into therapy, but I don't know how.

I'm off to read today's posts.

Long day.  So many folks were off today.  I did a whole bunch of my weekend chores today by getting up an hour early and going way out of my way to pick things up on the way home.

Now I can sleep in, or find projects around the house, or watch TV...or even yak on the phone.

I watched "Cheaper by the Dozen" on DVD.  It was a pleasant diversion.  Not nearly as poignant as the original film with Clifton Webb, and hardly true to the novel, but fun all the same.

On deck is "Elizabeth" which I've had a hankering to see again.  I've got so many DVDs piled up awaiting my scrutiny it's obscene.

And now I'm tired....so tired....can hardly keep my eyes ope....xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I've been nodding off a lot this evening and it's beddy-bye time.

One side effect of the ladsitting was that they did some of the sitting.  It started while we were going into the grocery store, when I swooped the younger grandlad up and perched him upon my shoulders.  He thought that was great fun, husky three-year-old that he is.  After a while, he decided he'd rather ride in the shopping cart, which was fine by me by that point.

My big mistake came later, when the sulky six-year-old grandlad started complaining about how he never got to do anything.  For some rediculous reason, I offered to give him a ride on my shoulders.  Now, the older grandlad is slight, light, and small for his age, but he's still three years older than his brother.  He thought the ride was a great idea, too.

My neck is going to be hurting through the weekend, at least.

Things should be fun here in Rehoboth in a couple of weeks.  From Friday, April 23rd, through Sunday, April 25th, the First Annual Rehoboth Beach Wine and Food Festival (http://www.rehomain.com/Food%20&%20Wine%20Fest.html) is taking place.  I don't know how they're coming up with "first annual," but from the link there's a lot of interesting stuff going on.

We've had very good dinners at Celsius and the Blue Moon, and the Dogfish Head, known for it's microbrewery, serves up pretty good pub grub.

The following weekend is the Rehoboth Beach Cabaret Fest. (http://www.rehomain.com/Cabaret%20Fest.html)   Add to the places we've enjoyed another participant, Cafe Zeus.

(Just when are we supposed to get any rest, I wonder?  And people were predicting that der Brucer and I would be bored out of our gords with this move!)

A mini rally could be in order. I used to drive a Mini but I certainly have never driven in a rally.

Tomovoz, Every year my high school chorus used to do a concert with The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.  Max Rudolph was then the conducting but he had a new young conductor who conducted much of the concert...that was Erich Kunzel.  The whole orchestra came and played in the high school gym with the chorus on one side of the bleachers and the audience on the other side.  Herr Kunzel and are chorus director, Robert Knauf, became good pals.  We were a very lucky school to have such enriching perks.  As far as I know we were the only high school in the area that did this.  I think we did a few numbers with them and then the symphony had its own program.

How many more posts until we're clear of the "all time low" number?   ::)

I have a few of the Kunzel CDs - the sound is always terrific. We are of course now over that numbers hurdle so I can bid you all a good evening. See you tomorrow. (I think 135 is the number SWW)
"High School" I think that is some kind of Stan Freberg reference - obscure of course.

Kunzel really became the Arthur Fiedler at the beginning of the CD age.  We've a number of his discs, almost all enjoyable (but everyone deserves the right to a couple of bunts).  I regularly looked forward to finding out what track would have a "caution" advisiory, due to it's sudden volume changes.

Everything is beautiful at the ballet.  Especially tonight's Romeo.

One last bit of fun we had with the grandlads: when we were driving away from the movie theater, the younger one piped up "Can we go go McDonalds?"  (He'd just spotted one of their so-called restaurants.)

De Brucer tried to suggest that we really didn't have time, as we had to get back to the home base.  This didn't work, of course, because when a three-year-old wants something, practical considerations don't matter.  "But I want to go to McDonalds!" he piped back.

I turned around and told them, in my most serious voice, "McDonalds is evil."

Their jaws dropped.

It took them a full five seconds before they could stammer back that "No, it's not!"

"McDonalds is evil," I repeated.

"No, it's not!" they shouted back.  "Oh, yes it is!" I replied.  "It's Not!" "It Is!" "It's Not!" "It Is!"

While this debate raged back and forth, der Brucer muttered to me "You're gonna catch hell from their father when he hears about this," since said father is a McDonalds addict.  He was chuckling all the while, of course.

By the time we got back to the homestead, the younger lad was whispering to his brother, "McDonalds is evil!" causing shrieks of laughter to billow from the back seat boys.

Life can be such fun!   8)
