Title: EASTER PARADE
Post by: bk on April 11, 2004, 12:00:45 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've hidden your eggs, you've put on your bonnets and now it is time to post until the bunnies come home.

In today's notes, our esteemed BK wrote: "I read six selections from the book – however, to mention what they were would give things away to folks who are still reading or even the several who haven’t even bothered to begin reading."

Well, as Inga Swenson uses to regularly shout (from offstage) on Benson, "I Heard That!!!"

To be honest, DR WEL sort of has the right idea, that a NYC reading would be a very good idea.  I just think he's got the wrong location, and that you should have the reading in a more intimate place than B&N.  Our NYC contingent might have some ideas.  Personally, I think you would do well in a bookstore in the theater district, where your old friends and new can gather together.

Dear reader elmoore is looking into the bookstore situation.  I would love to do it - the prob is there just aren't any mom and pop bookstores anymore - it's all the chains.  But, one place that elmoore mentioned was Footlight, even though it's not a bookstore.  Certainly we could fill that joint pretty easily, I just don't know how conducive it would be for a book signing, as the layout of the store is a bit weird.

Glad to hear you had a wonderful Mexican repast, BK.  We still haven't found a worthwhile Mexican haunt here in Delaware, but we haven't been trying all that hard yet, either.

In fact, last night we found a very good place for seafood, called Catchers.  They just reopened for the season on Thursday, and some of the staff is still showing their untrained edges, but those should be smoothed over very quickly.  (Hey, learning how to open a bottle of wine takes practice!  Do you have any idea how many new waitresses der Brucer has coached on the proceedure?)

This being DelMarVa, there was plenty of good drab to be had.  The creamy crab soup (with sherry) that der Brucer had, and the spicier Maryland-style crab soup that I had were both loaded with pieces of lump meat.  The appetizer, a grilled portobello mushroom stuffed with more crab and lobster and topped with chopped yellow and red tomato, was even better than the soup!  And the fish for the entrees were no let-down, as entrees sometimes can be.

He had a flounder almandine with a lobster cream sauce; I went for red snapper crusted with pecans in a tomato sauce.  The sides were just right, too.  Roasted garlic mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and (to his delight) stewed tomatoes where the tomatoes hadn't stewed to a meaningless glop but still had a good, meaty texture.

We'll definately be back!

(Is anyone out there hungry yet?   ;D ;D ;D)

Oh, this is exciting.  This is just too too!  This is the first time that I have been awake when BK switches from one daily thread to another.  Quite the event, let me tell you.

And with that, I am off to bed!

BK: The theater bookstore on 39th (I think it was) that der Brucer and I were able to find (after almost getting lost!) might be a good idea.  They had an area upstairs that would be very good for readings, and I got the impression that they hold them there often.  That, and the people running the place seemed quite nice.

Dang, if they'd only included a bookmark I'd have the address for you right now.

I believe that Woody is referring to the Drama Book Shop on west 40th.  It's a wonderful store with an incredible staff (the owner once devoted over two hours to helping me choose an appropriate one act play to direct some classmates in) and a lovely sitting area that is perfect for a reading.

Even I have been the the Drama Bookshop!  So that must be the place!

Very happy the reading went well!  All the good vibes worked!

Today is closing Day for LOVING LUCY....on Easter...oy!  We have about half a house, so I am hoping they will be a vocal bunch....people who want to be there!  Last night's audience was VERY VERY quiet.  Hmmmmmmm....

Well DRJENNY sometimes RHS is like that....I have been to great ones and I have been to deadly ones....ya never know what you are going to get!  But the preshow does sound a bit at odds with the  RHS I know and love.

Free for all day.....  I am watching Flight of the Phoenix, a weird movie with some good people in it, and a song by Connie Francis!

RE: LOVING LUCY, to those who know and/or care.  Originally one of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Specials was written to feature Miss Bette Davis, who fell down some stairs and couldn't do the show.  Miss Tallulah Bankhead stepped in.  If you remember the episode, do you think it would have been better with Davis?  I love Bankhead in the role, although none of the specials are really special....but I keep wondering how Bette would have been.....

HI, JRAND!  *waving*

We Heartlanders are up with the sun even on Easter Sunday, eh? ;)

DR JENNY:  Sadly, the glory days of Rocky Horror are in the past.  The beginning of the end was way back in 1990, when RHPS was released - officially - to video for its 15th anniversary (bootlegs had always floated around, but only fairly hardcore devotees had them).  Then came the laserdisc and the dvd.   Theater audiences have dwindled for the past 14 years, and the Rocky regulars have become nomadic tribes that care much less for the movie than they do the chance to spin out their own little private dramas while wearing fishnets.  The end result is the sad spectacle you witnessed last night.

A few years ago, I attempted to introduce a couple of friends to RHPS via a showing in West Palm Beach, where it's played for a number of years.  The result was much as you described.  I wound up apologizing and trying to lamely explain that years ago "it actually was fun."

If you really want to have a fun Rocky experience these days, you may just have to have a party with fellow Rocky fans and the DVD in "audience participation" mode.  Still won't approximate the old days, but it'll still be better than most of the theater showings still in existence.

One of my favorite reasons for visiting NYC is the Drama Book Store.  I spent five hours in there during one visit; I think I managed to look at pretty much every item in the place.  It would indeed be a faboo place for a reading.

It's really amazing just how important audience part-ti-ci-pay-shun is to the success of Rocky Horror.  When I first saw the movie, it was at the local University Film Society, andwas before the cult audience had discovered it.  I liked the co-feature, Phantom of the Paradise, a lot more.

The audience really was the reason for the success of the movie.  Now that it's on home video, the only realy way to replicate the experiece is to see it done live.  It was done here in Minneapolis last year, and was an utter delight; sold out for its' entire run.  And we could only get tickets for a single night, but oh, what a night that night was....!

JOHNNY GUITAR has a book that is very faithful to the film except that the film is camp and funny by accident whereas the musical is camp and funny on purpose.  It also has a score that is enjoyable Broadway-style C&W.  The problem is that they go together like oil and water.  You don’t do serious plot songs with a camp book.  It’s like the book writer and the song writers were working on two different shows.  Still it’s a pleasant way to pass an evening.

There must be some problems backstage though or some serious bug going around as three members of the cast of eight were out on a Saturday night less than a month after opening night.  Fortunately the understudies were good and well enough rehearsed so that if it weren’t for the sign in the lobby and the slip in the program I would not have known.

All in all it’s a nice try that could have been better but is still fun.

Re: NY Bookstores:  Neither Drama Book Shop nor Applause sell fiction which is why I didn't mention them.  Also, B&N gives a lot of publicity to their readings including ads in the NYTimes,  so non-DRs or lurkers who do know of BK would have a better chance of finding out about the reading.  Footlights is so tiny and crowded that I don't know how much room they would have for the crowds of people this reading would attract.  Also, whereever you have it, please make it an evening or weekend since most people work 9 to 5 jobs.

Happy Easter everyone!

The Drama Book Shop was also the first place I thought of.  But DR WEL has a good point.  They really do only sell a certain type of book.  Although it certainly cannot hurt to inquire about it (especially since many of their clientele would be familiar with BK).

My gosh, I am so sleepy today.

For those who don't know, the new anamorphic remastered DVD of PILLOW TALK is not getting rave reviews anywhere on the net as the image seems to have been overmatted or zoomed in spots. Those of you who have this new version of this classic romantic comedy might want to view and comment.

Thanks to DR td for pointing the complaints about the new PILLOW TALK out to me.

Good morning, all!  I slept very late this morning, for the first time in around a month.  I hope you're all having a happy holiday.  I'm reading the posts and thinking that - as a lapsed WASP - Easter was my least favorite holiday in the calendar, but my mother used to prepare the most wonderful Easter dinner:  ham, scalloped potatoes, several vegetables, deviled eggs (natch!), and my memory on dessert is vague:  I believe she used to bake an Angel Food with some fluffy marshmallowy frosting and grated coconut on top, maybe decorated with jelly beans, but this is all 25 years ago or more now.

DR Jennifer, I thought you'd gone to Boston to see a stage production of ROCKY HORROR!  I think the last time I threw toast at the screen was 1978.  They still do that nonsense?

NYC bookstores:  I had thought about The Drama Book Shop, which was my home away from home between 1979 and 1996, but my memories are not as kind as I wish they could be.  However, the space on 40th Street, to which I've never been, does offer lots of readings, and the store has stocked an occasional theatre-related novel in the past.  My memory is that the novels were kept in the American Theatre History/Criticism section.  I had thought about Applause as well; I'd been invited to a party for Ted Chapin's book on FOLLIES there.  I could stop in and inquire about a Kritzer Event.

Barnes and Noble offers the Kritzer books on their website, but I don't know if any of the stores in New York stock the novels.  I do know the store across from me on Broadway does not, but I ordered the first two books through them.  So much B&N business seems dictated by publisher reps, and I suspect no one's pushing the Kritzer novels to the B&N buyers for stocking (now if BK won a Pulitzer, they would be stocked!).

My reasons for suggesting Footlights were based on Dear Friend BK's recording credits, my affection for the store, and my belief that most of the people who might attend a reading would be show music collectors.  Selfishly speaking, since I'm out of town most of June and July, May seems too early to prepare the event, but early September might be just right (said the Baby Bear).

Yes with the Nick and Jessica variety hour before it.

But in Canada it's still on at 7pm (on CTV) (and 10pm on ABC).  But I always tape the end of the US version so I can see the previews!

Btw, it says something quite interesting for tonight's show in my tv guide.  I don't want to spoil this for anyone who isn't on the current season (BK DON'T READ THIS).

Good morning. HAPPY EASTER! A beautiful day here.

Did something out of the norm this morn. (That rhymes!) Took the wonderdog out for his regular walk to the park. Usually after that I bring him home and go for my own brisk walk. This morning, however, I went back to bed and just lay there like so much fish for almost two hours. I dozed a bit, but mainly just let my mind wander and watched the reflections of the pool playing on the white mini blinds -- like a live Hockney. Very relaxing.
Now I'm off for that walk, then back for a shower, breakfast and some Easter writing.
...CHANGE OF PLANS: As I was writing this, got a call from my friend, Roz, a CA native who now lives in Boulder. She's here on a shoot (she's a documentary filmmaker) and is coming over for quick visit in an hour. So I must walk FAST, shower FASTER and visit FASTEST.

Good morgen.  I'll do any store in NYC where we think we could draw a crowd.  I can tell you from my experience trying to do Bookstar here in LA, one that I live two minutes from, they do what "corporate" dictates, and it was impossible to get in there, same with Barnes and Noble at the Grove, where bits of all the books actually take place.  September would be fine.  And if whatever store doesn't want to deal with the publisher about getting the books (in other words, if they don't want to lay out the cash) I'll bring the books and they can do what the stores in LA do, take their cut of the sales.  That way, no worries for them.

The not-quite-clement weather is ruining Easter, ruining, do you hear?

My innovative plan for the holiday, which could have been carried out yesterday, was to go to the wilds of Spanish Harlem, cross the Ward's Island pedestrian bridge, and show the Dear Wife the amazingly vernal and picturesque Ward's and Randall's Islands.  It's something that virtually nobody ever thinks of doing: If you live in Manhattan, you tend to stay in Manhattan.  If you live in Queens, you tend to stay in Manhattan.  If you live in the Bronx, well, I'm sorry, but I've never met you.

In between all three of these boroughs (and providing the base for the tri-borough bridge) are two islands that have, over the years, merged into one.  Ward's has that tall grass you find in rural areas - you know the type, with that grass smell - and across the water the city seems a million miles away.  I once saw a rabbit there (maybe that's why I thought of it for Easter).  The Fire Department has its training facility there: there's a little building that is built to burn 100 times a year; firemen-in-training practice putting it out.  There's the surprisingly lovely grounds of a mental hospital.  I always think of the Mrs. Robinson line "stroll around the grounds until you feel at hom."  Here's what's so surprising: from the triborough bridge, you can only see the tops of its two ugly skyscrapers with bars on the windows.  (Most New Yorkers have been on the bridge, but never down below on the "ground" level of the island.)  In fact, most of the complex is one- or two-story buildings.  And good ones, in both classical and modern styles or architecture.

And a lot of baseball diamonds.  Randall's Island is practically nothing but diamonds.  Unlike Manhattan, the Bronx seems a stone's throw away.  That's the truth: it is a stone's throw away.  And yet if you're scared of the South Bronx, you feel protected by the little moat that stands between you.

As I write this, the sun has come out.  But it's still less than 50 with a 70$ chance of a little rain.

I hope everybody else's Easter wishes get realized.

Not having seen the new Pillow Talk DVD I'm reserving judgment, because the sorts who are complaining don't always know what they're talking about.  A lot of what they mention is the sides being cut off - I'm not saying they're wrong, but it also could be overscan on their TV (if they have widescreen TV), something that would not be applicable to the previous non-anamorphic version.  Someone has come on and said the region 2 is perfect, so why Universal would have done anything different for region 1 is baffling.

I'm loathe to correct a Hungarian who's shown such mastery of the English language.  But norm and morn do not rhyme.  They contain the same vowel sound, but not the same end consonant, which is important.

They are, however, anagrams.

Good morning all
Happy Easter everyone!  I have just returned from the 10am church service, where I saw many dear old friends that I have not seen in years, which was nice.  My sister has come home for Easter Sunday, althoug she and my father did not attend church with mom and I.  This is okay, church is a personal choice in this family.  Soon we will have our Easter feast...we will have ham,  we will have yams, we will have artichoke, we will have seasoned rice, and it will be grand and glorious and also glorious and grand.
It is a beautifully beautiful day here in Ellensburg.  A picture perfect Easter Sunday.  The sun is out, it is warm, and there is no real wind to speak of, which is a rare and precious thing in this town.
I enjoyed the pictures of the signing from yesterday.  Looks like a truly marvelous time was had by all...many congrats to dear bk on his success.

OK BK here's your Egg:

From AndrewSullivan:

"If you still think homosexual "marriage" won't affect you, think again. Your job may be at stake! Legal recognition of unnatural unions is the ultimate societal affirmation. Once the state approves of homosexual "marriages," the full weight of the law will be brought down against men and women of faith who believe in Judeo-Christian values." - Gary Bauer, in his newsletter for his organization, Campaign for Working Families.

We did not dye eggs this year, nor did we put out Easter baskets as we did when we were children.  I confess, I kind of miss those childhood traditions.  Watching the young ones at church this morning do the easter egg hunt in the churchyard, it brought back a lot of good memories.  I suppose the next time I can enjoy such things is when I have children of my own.

Easter Bunny Whipped by Pa. Church Group

Thursday, April 08, 2004

GLASSPORT, Pa.  — A church trying to teach about the crucifixion of Jesus performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs, upsetting several parents and young children.

People who attended Saturday's performance at Glassport's memorial stadium quoted performers as saying, "There is no Easter bunny," and described the show as being a demonstration of how Jesus was crucified.

Melissa Salzmann, who brought her 4-year-old son J.T., said the program was inappropriate for young children.

"He was crying and asking me why the bunny was being whipped," Salzmann said.

Happy Easter, everyone!

I think the Drama Book Shop would be a wonderful place to do a reading, BK!

I love the store, although I do rather prefer the old stomping grounds.  It was more cramped, but it almost felt clandestine, and I liked that.  I can just spend hours in the Drama Book Shop, but it's dangerous...I always spend way too much money.

During out last visit to NYC we went to said establishment and I offered to check the bag I was carrying at the counter (it did contain a recently purchased copy of a play) - Oh, no, said the proprietor - that's OK. This after the clerk at the Virgin Megastore noticed two computer over-rings at checkout and manually corrected them. I tell you, New York just isn't like it used to be!! Friendly proprietor's, aggressively honest clerks - what next, honest politicians!

I suspect his getting "bloated" was comeuppance for his desire to "hate a huge Mexican dinner".)

After discussing lousy movie musicals the other day, I celebrated that today with MAN OF LA MANCHA on laserdisc. Yes, it's badly paced and some songs are missing. Sophia Loren doesn't have enough vocal power to do her songs justice, and they've chosen a singer (Simon Gilbert) to dub O'Toole who matches well with Peter O'Toole's speaking voice but who isn't a very powerful or involving vocalist.

All that said, the movie is still faithful to the spirit of the stage work and I don't feel is an embarrassment. (I know I'm in the minority here.) Nothing like how A CHORUS LINE was chopped away, refocused, and its theme cheapened by Attenborough's horrendous direction and an ill-chosen cast.

I didn't comment on bk's "hate/ate" because I thought it was perhaps written on purpose. One of my more embarrassing moments was many years ago when I was introduced to some people from the Newfoundland. They said "Pleased to meet you, Hannah"  I corrected them, saying "My name is 'Anna'..."
Turned out that "Hannah" was how they pronounced "Anna" with the Nfld accent.
(This has nothing to dow with why bk wrote hate instead of ate, of course. But it brought it to mind.)
Sincerely,
Hannah

I suppose there are still old Technicolor cameras around in archives or something that possibly could be repaired or made fit for use, but the process ceased because it was too cost prohibitive in comparison to more modern color processes. I'm sure that hasn't changed.

My innovative plan for the holiday, which could have been carried out yesterday, was to go to the wilds of Spanish Harlem, cross the Ward's Island pedestrian bridge, and show the Dear Wife the amazingly vernal and picturesque Ward's and Randall's Islands.

Constructed in 1917 for the Penn Central Railroad, the Hell Gate Bridge reaches from Astoria, across Randall's and Ward's Islands to the Bronx. With a 1,017-foot parabolic arch and three miles of concrete viaduct, it is the longest bridge of its type in the world, and it formed a crucial link in the rail system from Canada and New England to the South and West.

Here (http://nyc10044.com/isl1872/isl1872.html) is a fascinating picture essay from 1872.

THE WORKHOUSE.

In the rear of the Almshouse is the Workhouse, one of the handsomest on the island.  It is constructed of hewn stone, and consists of a central building four stories in height, with a northern and a southern wing, with a traverse section across the extreme end of each wing.  In these traverse sections are located the workshops.  The entire length of the building is 680 feet.  Not counting the convict labor, the cost of its construction was over $100,000.  The stone of which it was built was obtained on the island.

In the central building are located the kitchens and store-rooms, the private quarters of the Superintendent and the other officials, and a large and handsome chapel.  The wings contain each a broad hall, on each side of which are three tiers of cells, one above the other.  Iron galleries, with stairways, extend along the fronts of these cells, and afford access to them.  There are 150 cells in each wing.  Each cell is provided with an iron grated door, and contains four single berths.  The cells are separated from each other by brick walls.  In the workshops, the carpenter's, blacksmith's, wheelwright's, tinner's, tailor's, and other trades are carried on.  The men are also kept at work grading the island, building the seawall, and cultivating the gardens.  Gangs of laborers are sent daily to engage in the works on Ward's and Randall's islands.  The women are made to do the housework and cleaning of the various institutions on the island, and are employed in washing, mending, sewing, knitting, etc.  All the inmates are obliged to labor.

The number of persons annually sent to the Workhouse is from 15,000 to 20,000.  The vagrant, dissipated, and disorderly classes are sent here by the city police courts, ten days being the average term of commitment.  Drunkenness is the principal cause of their detention here.  Very few are Americans.  Of the foreigners, the Irish are the most numerous, the Germans are next.

Back of the Workhouse, and occupying the extreme upper portion of the island, is the New York Lunatic Asylum.  It is a large and commodious building, with several out-buildings, with accommodations for 576 patients.  A new Lunatic Asylum is now in course of erection on Ward's Island.  It is to accommodate 500 patients.  It is one of the most complete establishments in the country, and is built of brick and Ohio freestone.  It is a very handsome building, with an imposing front of 175 feet.  The two asylums will accommodate 1076 patients, but they are not adequate to the accommodation of all the afflicted for whom the city is required is to provide.  Still further accommodations are needed.  In 1870, the number of patients committed to the care of the Commissioners were over 1300.

Well, if DR MattH thinks that viewing MAN OF LAMANCHA on laserdisc is going to create a furor, I'll happily admit that I plugged George Stevens' THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD into the dvd player today.  (I know it's a long movie, and I started it earlier today, BUT, it only now reached the INTERMISSION!)
I hadn't seen this in quite some time, and time, regrets to Jerry Herman, DOES NOT heal everything.
Still and all, it is a beautiful picutre to look at, very painterly (and yes, alot of of the time the shots are so interminable that watching it is akin to watching paint dry).
Beautiful score, though.
Amongst those "spot-the-guest-star"cameos, Ed Wynn, John Wayne and Pat Boone probably come off the worst.

About the only things I like in the film of MAN OF LAMANCH is Sophia Loren and Brian Blessed -  I just think that it looks like it was filmed for $.50.

It would not be feasable to shoot with the old Technicolor cameras.  They were behemoths - huge unwieldy things.  The film magazines were gargantuan because they held three rolls of film (hence Three Strip Tech).

Well, here I am a day or two behind in reading the lovely notes (and looking at all the lovely pictures of DR FS Charles Pogue and his lovely wife Julianne), but I could not let this holiday season pass without reminiscing and sharing.

Long before the Passion of Mel Gibson, well before Jesus Christ Superstar, when I was a twig of a lad in college, I wrote and directed the musical comedy The King of Kings and I or My Son, the Messiah.  Oh yes, it was produced at Caltech and later at the University of Wisconsin.  But alas not on Broadway.  However, and this is a long post, I had to share one lyric with you.  This is, as Lehman Engel would have it, a "musical scene" to a recognizable melody.

JESUS:   Dear kindly Pontius Pilate, I'll speak in my defense:
Forget my case and file it.  It doesn't make much sense.
They call me a blasphemer, they say that I'm a clod.
Pontius Pilate, I'm the Son of God!
PHARISEES &
SADUCEES:   Oh, gee, Pontius Pilate, this man we accuse,
Because he keeps insisting he's the King of the Jews.
   His blasphemous heresies ever increase.
He claims that he's the Prince of Peace!

JESUS:   Prince of Peace!

P&S:   King of Jews!  Prince of Peace!
   He's a duke at least,
And he claims that he's the Prince of Peace!

PILATE:   Waita just a minute!  If he'sa da Kings da Jews, what's he adoin' her?

JESUS:   That's what I'd like to know!

PILATE:   This isa none-a my business!  Take 'im to Caiaphas the High Priest!

JESUS:   Dear kindly High Priest, Father, they want to nail me up.
I'd like to say I'd rather you would remove this cup.
Just give me an acquittal, and things will be all right.
Father, I'm the Way, the Truth, the Light!

CAIAPHAS:   Well, gee, Jesus Christ, I must say it is odd
To see you stand here and to hear you claim to be God.
   I can't really swallow a word that you've said.
It's common knowledge God is Dead.

JESUS:   God is dead?

P & S:   God is dead, God is dead,
   God is dead, dead, dead!
   He is theologically dead!

CAIAPHAS:   But this isn't my affair.  The offended party is the King of the Jews.

JESUS:   Right here!

CAIAPHAS:   Not you--the real King of the Jews.  Take him to Herod!

JESUS:   Dear kindly old King Herod, O monarch of renown,
Don't think that I have dar-ed to try to take your crown.
It's true that I'm a King--I have been one from my birth,
But my kingdom is not of this earth!

HEROD:   Well, gee, Jesus Christ, that's a pitiful plea.
The crime that you've committed even out-Herods me!
To teach you your place and to show you who's boss,
You'll have to hang upon the cross!

JESUS:   On the cross?

P & S:   On the cross, on the cross,
   On the big wood cross!
We must nail you up upon the cross!

HEROD:   This guy must go!  But I don't have the legal authority to crucify    him.
JESUS:   Too bad!

HEROD:   So take him back to the man who does--Pontius Pilate!

JESUS:   Dear kindly buddy Pontius, well here I am again,
And still I am not conscious of just what is my sin.
This Roman crucifixion just doesn't sound like fun.
Not my will, but my Father's must be done.

PILATE:   Well, gee, Jesus Crhist, you have lost by a hair.
I'm going to wash my hands of this entire affair!
I gave them Barabbas, but he won't suffice.
Your blood will have to pay the price!

JESUS:   That's not nice!

P & S:   Pay the price, pay the price,
   As a sacrufice!
Jesus' blood will have to pay the price!

CAIAPHAS:   The trouble is he teaches!
P:   The trouble is he heals1
HEROD:   The point is what he preaches!
S:   The point it what he feels!
CAIAPHAS:   The point is he's a Christian!
PILATE:   The point is he's a Jew!
JESUS:   Father, forgive them; they know not what they do1

ALL BUT J.C.:   Oh, gee, Jesus Christ, we are sorry to say
We're gonna have to crucify you early today!
PILATE:   The people say kill you.  What am I to do?
JESUS:   Gee, Pontius Pilate--bless you!

Mahler was better looking than I imagined him to be.

MS - DRMATTH and MR BK are correct, I think the 3-strip cameras have been retired....there may be one in a museum...but they aren't used anymore.

FOXFIRE....woooohoooooooo Jeff Chandler and Jane Russell....and director Joseph Pevney wanted Miss Allison Hayes for the role played by Miss Mara Corday (Mrs. Richard Long) but since Allison was being dropped by Universal-International, they nixed her participation.....  Pevney was NOT pleased.

AND FOXFIRE was the movie that was being shown on the Andrea Doria when it was struck broadside by the Stockholm.

Where else but HHW can you find out such fascinating information?

My favorite number...after much deliberation...was just on....the audition for Ziegfeld....When That Midnight ChooChoo Leaves for Alabam.... what great tapping.  A friend of mine and I copied that routine step for step so many years ago...great changes in direction and rhythm.  And this time I just noticed that Astaire looks down at his feet more in this number than any other number I remember....he NEVER looked down (Donald O'Connor always watches his own feet)...and on the last measure out the curtain Fred misses a beat.....whew!

And of course everyone knows the story when Irving Berlin came out to work on the movie (or maybe it was on ANNIE GET YOUR GUN when Judy was still on the project)....as they sat at a piano Berlin made a suggestion to Judy on her phrasing....Judy replied:  "Listen, buster, you write 'em and I sing 'em!"  Berlin was truly amused.

Good evening!

Happy Easter!

Sorry for being errant and truant the past few days, but I kept finding myself exhausted and a little "under" after getting home from the show (and/or rehearsal).  Well, as it turns out, it appears my annual allergy-ear/nose/throat-infection-thingy has returned.  (It's a month early this year, however.)  -Gotta love those cherry blossoms... and all that cherry blossom pollen!  Ugh.  So...

If I could ask for those patented and proven Good Health Vibes from all your Hainsies and Kimlets out there, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thankfully, I did make it back to Richmond - the traffic was not too bad.  Of course, I came home to a less than clean apartment (and my roomie is still surprised that I'm leaving the place in June - for New York!)...  And the landlord finally brought in a new washer/dryer unit...Unfortunately, the old/broken unit is still in place, and the new one is taking up way too much floor space in the kitchen...

Hmmm.. Maybe I should have stayed up in Arlington this "weekend".  Ah, well...

I'm going to be turning out the lights soon, and heading to bed...  -Out of sight, out of mind.  Hopefully, come morning the Good Health Vibes will have done their job - I really don't want to spend my day off sick.  :(

-Although, since I'll most likely be cleaning and installing the new washer/dryer tomorrow...

I miss you guys.  :-[

But, we did have great shows this weekend, and good audiences - babies included.  -And at least the whole stage left side of the pit (all four of us) is now doing the "Generations" dance.   ;)

-The secret is to use both your arms and your chest.   ;D

I hope everyone is doing well, and has/had a great weekend.

Evening all!

Hope you had a wonderful Easter.  I can't honestly say what I did with mine.  I think I just frittered the day away.  One moment it was morning and the next it's almost time to go to bed.  I didn't really do much of anything.

We had ham and sweet potatos for dinner and I ate at least 6 dark chocolate dove squares (for which I now feel quite guilty about) but that's about all.  I didn't buy any Easter candy and since we don't have any kids, we don't bother with colored eggs.

Let's see, I was going to tell you about the Ren Fest yesterday.  I really enjoy seeing all the costumes.  Some are quite good.  There's nothing like seeing a handsome man walking with a cloak swishing behind him.  I find capes/cloaks to be very romantic.

The sword play,  the jousting like wrestling and the human chess match.   Fake, I know but I love watching it.

And of course all the pretty things to buy.  This year I bought a very lovely crystal necklace and matching earnings.    They shine better than any diamond I’ve ever seen and when the sun hits them just right, the rainbow effect is just wonderful.

I also had my fortune read.  I haven’t done that in quite some time and it’s always fun.  I always take what’s said with a grain of salt but sometimes it hits pretty close or it says something interesting.    This time was something interesting but I won’t hold my breath on it coming to pass.

It’s pouring down rain right now and I’ve heard a couple of good claps of thunder.  Guess I’s better sign off while I can.

Have a good one all!

Nope, chat's tomorrow.  (I'll be in rehearsal until late.)

Professor Orr:  That is one hysterically funny parody.  One of the best I've ever seen.
Ranks right up there with Joe Keenan's musical Oedipus to the tune of a ballad from The Pajama Game:

"Hey there - you with the scars in your eyes"

Thanks for making it a happy Easter.

Of course there was the time Judy was asked to sing at a veteran's hospital.  She was in one of her bad periods and an hour after her concert was supposed to start she decided not to perform.  "But Judy," someone said, "they had to wheel in most of your audience in wheelchairs" to which Judy replied "if they wheeled 'em in they can Damn well wheel 'em out again!".

LOL WEL - and no doubt, they did.

Also interesting that Ann Miller is wearing beautiful red ankle strap high heels when she does her Magazine Cover number, but moments later joins Astaire for their dance duet, wearing lovely red ballet/jazz slippers.

Meal Report Meal Report Meal Report Meal Report!!! :)

Appetizers:

Assorted cheeses (double cream brie, mildly smoked gouda and some other chese whose name I forget)
Guacamole (a weird family holiday tradition) with nacho chips
Fresh fruit

Main Courses:

Crown roast of pork with apple stuffing (for some of the family)
Traditional baked ham with orange-brown sugar glaze (for others)

Side Dishes:

Asparagus with lemon sauce
Traditional mashed potatoes
Sweet potatoe purée with roasted garlic
Corn
Hot homemade rolls
Brocolli
Regualr gravy for the roast pork
Curried fruit sauce for the ham

Desserts:

Coconut cream pie
Pineapple squares
English fruit trifle

Tea, Coffee

I am so unable to move right now.  Ergh...

After dinner my ENTIRE family (13 rather large people) crowded around our tv set to watch the third game of the Montreal-Boston hockey playoffs.  It was an amazing game and the Habs won after some INCREDIBLE play!  Yippee!  My sister and her boyfriend are going to the game on Tuesday and I am so jealous of them.

I hope you all had a great Easter (whether it has any religious significance for you or not... )! :D

EASTER PARADE is a joyous musical, one of my very favorite MGM musicals of all-time. I am still bitter Judy got no solo number during their big show (of course, she got "Better Luck Next TIme" singing to an audience of one, the always grand Clinton Sundberg), but it's still a terrific musical. Yep, Ann Miller's costumes are breathtaking, and she wears them beautifully. Notice how Judy's weight seesaws during the picture? Doesn't matter, she's always fabulous whether pudgy or thin.

I finished LA MANCHA and put in the Criterion DVD of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME. I used to teach the short story every year (it was ALWAYS anthologized in our literature books), but I had always managed to miss this old movie of it. Only got as far as the beginning of the hunt, but will finish it tomorrow.

Yes DRMATTH I did notice her weight up and down this time, never really paid much attention before.  I also noticed what a really nice acting job Judy and Peter Lawford did in the restaurant scene when he tells her he loves her, and she tells him she loves someone else.  Majority of it done in one take.....nice scene.  And of course Peter has that paralyzed right hand so he always uses his left hand for action and holds something in his right.....

Had myself a wonderful Easter brunch at my grandparent's house.  Delicious ham, Greek Easter bread (a little light on the anise this year, I felt), all sorts of fresh fruit, eggs in both scrambled and boiled form, with some lovely mimosas for liquid refreshement.  And, yes, I did have myself a little chocolate rabbit!

Tons of unsolicitied vibes to my dear cyber-father!

And EASTER PARADE features a fleeting glimpse of Ms. Joi Lansing as one of the hat models...back when she was known as Joy Lansing.

Just finished watching FUNNY FACE...now Fred Astaire might have been a bit too old for Judy Garland...but he is way too old for Audrey Hepburn!! But still it is such a fun movie, and those gowns are knock-outs!!!!!

yesterday (urp) was a day of starch and fat, like any good Jewish food day (grrrp...uh). Very touching moment when my 95 year old father got all weepy cuz he had his four children and 5 of the 7 grandchildren around the table. He remembered being the youngest (4) kid at the orphanage when he learned the 4 questions by rote, so he could ask them. He still remembers the words.

So, my darling bk, sorry I missed your book signing - I would have loved everything about it, the food, the guests, the music and fun, all of it! but I wouldn't have missed what was probably my dad's last seder for anything.

Jose, feel better. Sunshine and lilies of the valley to ya!

We went out to dinner for Easter this year (my grandma, grandpa, great aunt, aunt, and me). I had Insalata Romana--Caesar salad, Potato Gnocchi (we all split two servings of it), Pollo Toscano with mashed potatoes and julienned zucchini, squash, and carrots. I finished with a chocolate soufflé topped with vanilla gelati. Outstanding food, very tasty server!
